Amazing and truly eye opening!.......2003-01-29
Once you get passed the fact that this book has no author and simply and editor, then perhaps you can pay attention to the teachings within.
Prophecy aside.......It's Philosophy is in arguable...........1998-03-26
First off....I am not a huge fan of spiritual books . Growing up having preachers quote the bible to justify just about any attrocity {forgive my spelling}, tainted my view of spiritual scriptures. I am however a huge fan of philosophy. Though this book is prophetic (and a crazy one at that.....Christ coming back in a spaceship crazy} its philosophy well worth exploring. It encompases all religions and I believe gets to the heart of who we are and why we are here. It is written in lamens terms and does not babble endlessly in obscurity which one often finds when reading both philosophy and spiritual books. Hey.....i was a disenchanted youth who sat around, smoked pot and shunned the rest of the world for its cruelty. If this book can reach the most distant burnout, I guarantee you will thank yourself for reading it.....if only you can find it....and if you do let me know....and please pass it on to a friend.

Book Description
A nun and a monk defy death and dishonor at her family's Welsh fortress...
In the winter of 1271, Death stalks the corridors of Wynethorpe Castle on the Welsh border. When the Grim Reaper touches the beloved grandson of the castle lord, Baron Adam sends for his daughter, Prioress Eleanor of Tyndal, and her sub-infirmarian, Sister Anne, to save the child with prayers and healing talents. Escorting them to the remote fortress is Brother Thomas, an unwilling monk fighting his private demons.
Death may be denied once in his quest for souls but never twice. Soon after the trio arrives, an important guest is murdered. The prioress's brother, bloody dagger in hand, stands over the corpse. All others may believe in his guilt, but Eleanor is convinced her brother is innocent.
Outside her priory, in a world of armed men, Eleanor may have little authority, but she is determined to untangle the Gordian knot of thwarted passions and old resentments even if it means defying her father, a man with whom she longs to make peace. As passions rise with the winter wind and time runs short, Eleanor, Anne and Thomas struggle to find the real killer.

Mystery and Medieval mayhem.......2006-10-30
Tyrant of the Mind is a first-rate historical mystery. The characters are fascinating and full of life. Royal has a marvelous talent for incorporating medieval history and customs into the story line. The mystery is incredibly complex. It kept me guessing until the final chapters. I'm a big fan of Ellis Peters and Margaret Frazer's medieval mysteries and I'm so glad that I discovered such a wonderful new series.
A New Voice in my Favorite Genre.......2005-01-31
Priscilla Royal's 'Prioress Eleanor of Tyndal' stories (this is the second) are especially competent in every respect. Her characters are carefully drawn and three dimensional, her story line is logical and intriguing, her grasp of medieval detail is extremely good...she is simply a first rate story teller. It happens that medieval mysteries are my favorites, and this author is right up there with Alys Clare, Margaret Frazer, Bernard Knight, and Kate Sedley. I'll look forward to her next entry in the 'Prioress Eleanor' tales.
fascinating medieval mystery .......2004-11-01
Eleanor of Wynethorpe, the prioress of Tyndale in East Anglia, is summoned home because her young nephew Richard is very ill. Accompanying her is the renowned healer Sister Anne and Thomas a monk who was forced into the church by a fanatical bishop. Visiting the castle are Sir Geoffrey, his wife Isabella and his son Henry and his daughter Julianna who are negotiating the marriage of Lord Adam's son and Eleanor's brother Robert to Sir Gregory's daughter Julianna .
While Anne takes care of Richard, Isabella flirts with Robert and Sir Geoffrey fights with his son and herHenry and Robert engage in fisticuffs. Shortly thereafter, Henry is dead from knife wounds and Robert is found standing over the body, his hands dripping with blood. Surprisingly, it is Sir Geoffrey who argues that Robert is innocent and his father who has him locked in a guarded room waiting for the sheriff to come. Eleanor and Brother Thomas work together to find the real killer because they believe Robert is innocent.
TYRANT OF THE MIND is a fascinating medieval mystery that takes place six months after the ill fated rebellion of Simon de Montefort. Readers geta tantalizing glimpse of the inner workings of a medieval castle. The heroine is the voice of reason and quite logically shows her father why her brother couldn't possibly be guilty; in an age when women had no rights, Eleanor stands up for her beliefs. Brother Thomas, who also plays a role in finding out who the killer is, has adjusted to the circumstance that forced him to become a priest. Priscilla Royal will appeal to fans of medieval mysteries as her style is reminiscent of renowned author Sharon Key Perman.

I've read this thing a thousand times..........2007-01-06
This is another great book by Margaret Weis, and if you enjoy fantasy in a more modern setting, I recommend it. The characters are complex, and the story is definitely character-driven. More than that, the dialogue and descriptions flow nicely, so it's not difficult to get sucked in by the writing style and captivated to the very last word.
I have the sequel (or perhaps prequel?) to this, but for me, it was a disappointing because I'd anticipated a full-length novel. Nonetheless, if you can find the book, I recommend adding it to your collection. It's a graphic novel called Testament of the Dragon, and it has some interesting pictures to go along with the narration. It's also a quicker read than Dark Heart.
Hope I was helpful.
A Hero you can understand..........2007-01-04
Justin wants to do the right thing. He struggles to be a decent person. But his Master doesn't allow such "noble" tendencies to rule the Disciples that the Master rules!
But for the death of beloved Weis's son David, we'd have all been blessed with the sequels to (what first began as) this series.
Dark Heart was Book I...if you read it, enjoy it. But give understanding to the ending, and respect Margaret's decision not to continue, as Dragon's Disciple was her son's creation.
Perhaps someday, someone she trusts and respects will ask her permission
to try/attempt to finish what they began. Then, perhaps we'll have the sequels that should have been.
But yes, still a good read, and another Exceptional Weis corroboration.
Great book-but should have a sequel.......2004-05-30
I thought this book was really good-well written, lots of action and a good plot. But it deserves a sequel! I was very disappointed to hear that Margaret Weis is not continuing the series-I'm not sure if people will like reading this book wehn it doesn't really have an ending. She should have written at least one more book and given us some closure. It's still a great book though, in my opinion. It just doesn't have a good ending.
The second book.......2004-03-16
I asked Margaret Weis about the second book (see www.staroftheguardians.com for her addie) and she said that due to the death of her son David Baldwin, she would not continue the series, as it was more his work than hers, and it would not feel proper to use his ideas. It was his project. There is a prequil or similar called Testament of the dragon, but i think it's only available in America, as i cannot obtain it in the wonderful world of Oz here.
were's the sequil?.......2003-07-24
is there going to be a sequil to this book or what. I read it and loved it. I have waited a few years and still no sequil.

The newly updated and expanded guide to raising a teenager with an attention deficit disorder is more comprehensive than ever. Thousands more parents can rely on Dendy's compassionately presented expertise based on the latest research and decades of her experience as a parent, teacher, school psychologist, and mental health counselor. Her book looks at key areas that make adolescence--an already challenging time of life--potentially more difficult for kids with ADD or ADHD: academics, dating, driving, socializing, and greater independence.
TEENAGERS WITH ADD AND ADHD gives parents insight on everything from understanding the diagnosis to treatment options, and from behavioral and academic issues, to parent involvement and self-advocacy. The new edition includes additional or updated information in several areas. A separate chapter on medications provides details on specific drugs, including many new ones, and what research shows about their effectiveness in improving attention, impulse control, and distractibility. Dendy discusses new findings about the role of executive function problems and how they relate to teenagers difficulties with organizational skills, long-range planning, and staying on task. She advises parents on their role in working with schools to find strategies for academic success. Teenagers also speak out about their condition, and Dendy points to ways to involve them in their own treatment plan. In addition, the book covers coexisting disorders such as learning disabilities, depression, anxiety, Tourette syndrome, and Asperger syndrome.
Since 1995, this nuts and bolts guide has given parents hope and empowerment. It's chockfull of the latest data and proven strategies that can help manage the symptoms of ADD and ADHD at home and school.

Teens with ADD/ADHD.......2007-04-15
This book is written by a highly qualified woman..who has ADD herself. It came recommended to me from a friend who has raised four kids of her own with ADHD.
It is honest, informative and gives a lot of insights as to how to understand and help teens with ADD/ADHD. The author also has a background in teaching and counseling, which makes me find the book even more credible. I also bought her took on teaching teens with ADD and it is a good reference too.

A must-read for all parents of ADD/ADHD children!.......2007-02-02
This is a wonderful resource for parents struggling to understand why thier ADD/ADHD kids do the things they do. Especially as a mother, it helped relieve the guilt I feel, wondering what I did wrong. (Answer: nothing, this truly is a medical condition!) This book will help explain the physiological aspects in understandable terms and provide helpful tips & strategies for your family.
ADHD.......2007-01-05
I am a homeschool Mom with ADHD and have 2 kids with ADHD. This book has been extremely helpful.
Another great book.......2007-01-04
Chris Zeigler Dendy writes very informative books that are easy to read and understand. She truly understands what parents of ADHD children live with everyday and she has practical solutions to everyday problems. She bases her solutions on what teens with ADHD have told her that works for them. I highly recommend any book by Chris Zeigler Dendy.

EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT!!!!!.......2005-04-01
This is a must-have book for parents with teenagers with ADD. I also bought for me and for my son's team of teachers, "Teaching Teenagers With ADD" by the same author. Both are excellent books!!!!
Practical, readable, compassionate.......2005-03-02
This is another excellent book by Chris Ziegler Dendy. The author presents practical information that will help parents in their day to day struggle to deal with the changing world of an adolescent with ADHD. She clearly has dealt with some of these stiuations herself, so she brings humorous and compassionate anecdotes to illustrate the factual material. I would highly recommend this and her other books on the practical aspects of dealing with adolescents with ADHD
Great Place to find answers.......2004-03-02
This book was so helpful to me! My 13-year-old son was just diagnosed with ADD and it was a God send. It has so many great suggestions, stories and advice. I stayed up all night reading it! It was like an autobiogrpahy of my son for the past few years. He was especially relieved to figure out what was wrong and read the other kid's experiences.
It was also helpful for me on how to advise my son's teachers of special care that he needs. The appendix for teachers in the back is an excellent tool to give to teachers so they can develop a good basic understanding of the condition.
The book doesn't have much on the medication Adderal which was what our doctor recommended. The information on accompanying sleep disturbances was excellent - our doctor didn't even know about it.
PARENTS AND TEACHERS NEED TO READ THIS BOOK.......2002-11-16
THIS BOOK IS WOUNDERFUL! A MUST FOR PARENTS RAISING TEENS WITH ADHD AND ADD. TEACHERS OF TEENS SHOULD READ THIS ALSO, SO YOU CAN UNDERSTAND THE TOUGH JOB OF RAISING AND TEACHING THESE WOUNDERFUL KIDS. THIS BOOK IS A MUST TO READ!

With teens it's often hard to tell what's ""normal"" behavior and what's ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). Here's practical help for parents raising teenagers with ADD.

An Informative and Practical Book for Parents of ADD Teens.......2007-01-11
Finally, a book that really explains ADD in teenagers and how it affects their abilites and lives.... As a mother of a 13 year old boy with ADHD, I was lost. We were able to help him manage his ADHD until puberty hit. Suddenly, it was a whole new ballgame. None of our discipline techniques worked anymore. After reading this book, I have a much better understanding of the disease and how it really impairs people in certain aspects of daily functioning. Some of the behviors I thought were defiant, I now realize are part of the ADHD make up. This book provides explainations of how ADD affects teens depending on their personality type and which behaviors are normal teen behaviors and which are related to the ADD. It gives practical advice on how to handle discipline issues, how to deal with schools to help them better educate your teen and how to help your teen learn to function within the limits of his/her ADD. I am so glad I found this book!
An excellent guide to parenting an ADD teen........1997-04-10
Recently two of my four children were diagnosed with ADD. I began reading everything I could on the subject. Often the information was confusing, or presented in such a technical way as to be of little help.
Giving Your ADD Teen a Chance is presented clearly and with great warmth. I felt good about my children's life. Ms. Weiss gives helpful, relevant advice, loaded with common sense. I have
recommended this book to anyone I can find, including several mental health professionals. If your child is diagnosed with ADD, whether or not they have reached their teenage years, this is a MUST read.
Book Description
Contemporary German cooking couples hearty regional traditions with the subtle, light, and more sophisticated tastes of the modern palate. Jean Anderson and Hedy WÜrz lead readers from the back roads of Bavaria to the vineyards on the Moselle, from a quaint subterranean tavern in LÜbeck to the three-star restaurants of Munich, opening kitchen doors and kettle lids to reveal modern Germany's gastronomic triumphs.
With explanations of ingredients, clear instructions, and evocative introductions to the recipes, the cooking of today's Germany is illuminated for American cooks. All the traditional dishes are here, many in their original robust versions and others cleverly lightened by German's new generation of chefs and home cooks. Potato salad, barely glossed with dressing, then greened with fresh chevil; sauerkraut teamed with cod; and pumpernickel reduced to crumbs and folded into an airy Bavarian cream are just a few of the creative new German dishes that nevertheless bow to tradition. A chapter on wine and beer by Lamart Elmore, former executive director of the German Wine Information Bureau, completes the picture of Germany's total gastronomic experience.
Germany today is a land of contradictions, a land where meandering rivers run alongside autobahns, where castles and cuckoo clocks coexist easily with high tech, high fashion, and haute cuisine. German food reflects this rich tapestry, and in The New German Cookbook, Jean Anderson and Hedy WÜrz import and interpret the traditional and the subtle, flavorful, and sophisticated dishes of modern Germany for American cooks.

German Food.......2007-09-14
This is the best German cookbook ever! Easy to read, recipes are very easy to follow - if only the chef came with it, it would be perfect!
I am a fan of this cookbook........2005-10-01
I have borrowed this cookbook from my local library several times and finally decided to break down and buy it. I have traveled to Germany on a couple of different occasions and truly enjoy their culture and cuisine. A couple of favorite recipes in this book are the pancake soup and a recipe for marzipan ice cream that doesn't require an ice cream maker. Fantastic!
Two German Cookbooks Compared. This one is weaker........2005-02-11
`The New German Cookbook' by Jean Anderson and Hedy Wurz and `The German Cookbook' by Mimi Sheraton are both written by leading American culinary writers. Although their publication dates are separated by thirty years, Ms. Sheraton's earlier book has been brought up to date at almost exactly the same time the newer book was published by Ms. Anderson and her co-author.
The raw numbers put Ms. Anderson at about 390 pages of recipes for a list price of $30 and Ms. Sheraton at about 500 pages of recipes for a list price of $35. Ms. Anderson includes an excellent bibliography of both English and German sources, including a reference to Ms. Sheraton's book. Ms. Sheraton has no bibliography, but includes the excellent feature of an English and a German index. Ms. Anderson includes a very nice glossary of German culinary terms. Ms. Sheraton's list of terms is much shorter, at the end of a short chapter on cooking utensils, which looks almost identical to such a section you would find in a good book on French recipes. In fact, it has a lot of similarities to a much more complete section in Julia Child's landmark `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' which appeared just a few years before Ms. Sheraton's book. While my primary objective is to compare the two German books, I will say at this point that neither comes close to matching the quality of Ms. Child's classic.
Ms. Sheraton, with the longer book, is claiming to be a complete guide to mastering authentic German cooking while Ms. Anderson specifically aims her book at `new' German cooking and avoids any claim to being a survey of all German cuisine (Ms. Sheraton does say, here and there, that there are some typical recipes which are simply so starchy and plain that she thinks they will be of no interest to American cooks, so she leaves them out). A quick look at the first few chapters confirms this assessment. In appetizers, Ms. Sheraton has 18 recipes while Ms. Anderson has but 10. In the next chapter on soups, Ms. Sheraton has 38 recipes while Ms. Anderson has but 25. And, Ms. Sheraton follows her soup chapter with a chapter on soup garnishes.
Which of these two books one may wish to buy has a lot to do with what you want from a `German cookbook'. I happen to be from a German and Pennsylvania German background, so I am looking for a wide variety of recipes for classic German and Austrian dishes. For this, I certainly prefer Ms. Sheraton's more complete coverage. I think the most typical buyer may be interested in a few famous German / Austrian recipes such as Sauerbraten, Sauerkraut, Spatzle, Wiener Schnitzel, Sausage dishes, and Strudel (It is entirely coincidental that all of these dishes start with an `S'). A comparison of all these dishes in both books shows that in every case, not only does Ms. Sheraton have more recipes, her recipes are also more complete.
One place where this is most dramatic is in the recipes for strudel. Ms. Anderson gives but one recipe for strudel, calling it a `Bavarian Strudel', and accurately stating that it is less like the classic Austro-Hungarian dish than like a cobbler. And, rather than giving a homemade recipe for the dough, Ms. Anderson's recipe uses frozen filo dough. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, as long as you are not buying her book to get a good classic strudel dough recipe. Ms. Sheraton does give us a full recipe for the classic Austrian strudel dough plus recipes for apple, cheese, cherry, plum, poppy seed, rhubarb, and Tyrolean strudel. Everything but cabbage strudel (however, there is a sauerkraut strudel recipe under sauerkraut recipes)! With sausage dishes, the picture is similar. Ms. Anderson has but three sausage dishes while Ms. Sheraton gives us ten.
Ms. Sheraton's recipes do tend to be just a bit more concise than those in Ms. Anderson's book. This is understandable since Ms. Sheraton says at the outset that her book assumes you know your way around the kitchen and know in practical terms, the difference between blanch and poach, for example. And yet, with very important recipes such as with sauerbraten and spatzle, two dishes which require considerably more than the average amount of technique, Ms. Sheraton's recipes are more descriptive than those from Ms. Anderson.
It is entirely appropriate that Ms. Anderson's co-author is a German travel writer, as one of the things in `The New German Cookbook' which is missing from `The German Cookbook' are sidebar stories describing the origins of most recipes.
The bottom line for all of this for Ms. Anderson's book is that it is very similar to a cookbook of recipes from a popular modern German restaurant. And, restaurant cookbooks are bought primarily to supply the reader with new ways of doing classic dishes and cute stories of how the executive chef came by the recipes. The main difference is that unlike recipes from great French and Italian restaurants, the recipes in Anderson's book are primarily simplified versions of the classics rather than fancy new twists.
Really want good recipes from the authentic, traditional German cuisine, get Ms. Sheraton's book. If you are so devoted to German recipes that Sheraton's book simply does not supply enough variety, get both books. Both books give good sketches of wine and beer production in Germany and there is little redundancy. Ms. Sheraton adds the extra touches of recipes for wine and beer based drinks and punches.
Ms. Sheraton's book is a reasonable addition for German cuisine to the great one volume treatments of ethnic cuisines done by Diane Kochilas on Greece, Diana Kennedy or Rick Bayless on Mexico, Penelope Casas on Spain, Barbara Tropp or Virginia Lee on China, Shizuo Tsuji on Japan, and Jean Anderson on Portugal!
This book is a decent supplement to information on its subject.
I cook from this book all the time.......2003-01-16
I live in Germany and experience true "German" cooking. In comparing this book to several other German cookbooks I own, this one is by far the best (and easiest). I am truly impressed.
Different from most German Cookbooks.......2002-01-11
Light, contemporary revisions of many (almost 230 recipes included) German traditional recipes are here.
My favorites include an unbelievably great "BlackForest Trout Soup"; "Rhineland-Style Sauerbraten with Raisin Gravy" "Schnitzel Pot" and the humorous "Rat Tails" or "Green Beans, Pears and Bacon."
For dessert, try the german "quark" which is like ricotta cheese, and can be substituted for easily with products available in most locals.
This is welldone work, but lacks any photos, which would add greatly to the motivation to try more recipes, and also provide serving suggestions.
All in all, though a great one to try, given it modifys the traditional heavy rather bland style that permeates so much of what most know as German cooking. This is light, contemporary and easy to secure ingredients and techniques cookbook.
