Book Description
Pino Luongo, prolific and irrepressible restaurateur (Le Madri, Coco Pazzo, Tuscan Square, and Centolire) and author of A Tuscan in the Kitchen and Simply Tuscan, has written a highly personal, completely innovative take on the food of his native region.
For more than two decades, Pino Luongo has been one of New York City’s most renowned restaurateurs. Inspired by the many culinary crosscurrents in this most cosmopolitan of cities, he has devised an original version of the food of Tuscany that draws on ingredients and inspiration from Italy, America, and even Asia. Grouping recipes by key ingredients (such as grains and legumes, mushrooms, spring vegetables, and fall vegetables) instead of by courses, he explains the Old-World “Il Classico” roots of his recipes, then takes them in exciting new directions with his own vibrant, New-World versions. In this brand new approach, the thick Florentine soup ribollita becomes a delectable filling for ravioli. Polenta replaces bread in pappa al pomodoro (tomato and bread soup). The farro grain finds a new role as the basis of a warm salad made of mushrooms and arugula. Shellfish is happily married with the usually vegetarian dish caponata. There are poultry (Rigatoni with Chicken and Pea Ragout with Prosciutto), pork (Pork Short Ribs, Tuscan Style), and meat dishes (Lemon and Oregano–Marinated Lamb Chops with Roasted Peppers) and for an unusual finish to the meal, he gives advice on serving cheese with unexpected accompaniments. A luscious selection of dolci includes desserts such as Chocolate Pudding with Cherry Sauce and Citrus Zest and Almond Biscotti. Occasionally Pino Luongo looks back to Tuscany’s glorious past for inspiration, as with the dessert dating from the Renaissance, Tagliatelle Torta with Apples and Raisins. Based on dishes served in Pino Luongo’s popular and acclaimed restaurants as well as recipes he has created at home through improvisation, La Mia Cucina Toscana will delight anyone interested in exploring something new from one of Tuscany’s favorite sons.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful photos of each recipe.......2007-06-16
Beautiful photos of each recipe allow readers to see what their creation will look like. Tuscan recipes with a contemporary twist that are worth the effort.
A beautiful cookbook that encourages cooking........2007-04-06
I am not a baker because if I have 40% of the ingredients, I'll go ahead and make the dish. This cookbook is great for me because Luongo offers the classic Italian version, and his version, which shows me where the options are for my own interpretation. The photographs are beautiful. Great recipes for spring like spring vegetable and pecorino toscana salad, salad of sweet corn, peas and spelt - and lots of great mushroom recipes for the fall.
My Absolute Favourite!!.......2006-05-08
This cookbook is really wonderful. I picked it, leafed through it, and decided a few minutes later that it was coming home with me. I adore cooking, and have been to Tuscany, but aside from that, I just love the way Pino Luongo puts his recipes together. The ingredient combinations are original and fantastic. The recipes are fairly simple, but really spectacular in their results. This is really my favourite cookbook these days, recipe after recipe is just as great or better than the one before. Makes me feel a real passion for cooking!

Impressive review of Vacheron & Constantin.......2007-07-13
Not only is this book stunningly beautiful but it is well written and informative. The photographs are superb and the information given on the developments of watch technology through the various eras of V&C's 250 years are related to the historic context of the particular era. This is much more than a coffee table book, it is one that you will want to go back to and read over.
Book Description
One of the most striking figures in international style offers a unique and unforgettable memoir of the two women who shaped his dreams, tastes, and character.
“My grandmother and Mrs. Vreeland had similar ways of appreciating luxury,” writes André Leon Talley, “because they both believed in the importance of its most essential underpinning: polish.” In A.L.T., Vogue’s editor at large explains how a six-foot-seven African-American man from North Carolina became the influential fashion figure he is today, learning life’s most enduring lessons from two remarkable women: his maternal grandmother, Bennie Frances Davis, a woman who worked back-breakingly hard as a maid, yet taught him to embrace the world with a warm heart and an open mind; and Diana Vreeland, the inimitable editor in chief of Vogue and director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, who became his peerless professional mentor. In a rich, eloquent voice that resonates with both small-town wisdom and haut monde sophistication, Talley tells of the grandmother who encouraged his dreams and ambitions while instilling in him an abiding sense of dignity and style, and of the legendary fashion doyenne who took him under her wing as he rose to fame in the wild New York of the 1970s. Threaded throughout are stories of the man himself, who has survived thirty years in the “chiffon trenches” with eminent grace and style.
Clear, elegant, and often magical, A.L.T. shines like a rare jewel as it illuminates three extraordinary lives.

Great book, easy to read. No doubt that it took alot of guts to publish this one. I am a retired Border Patrol Officer, and I can tell you that this book is very accurate. All federal government employees should read this book before you take the oath and learn what really goes on behind the scenes in our government. Book Description
In the summer of 1999, David Lander revealed publicly that he suffers from multiple sclerosis-a secret he'd kept for fifteen years even while living and working in Hollywood's celebrity fishbowl. Diagnosed with the illness after filming the last episode of Laverne and Shirley, Lander continued to develop his film and television career while hiding his illness. His success was an astonishing testament to his physical and emotional strength and his determination to prove that those with M.S. can still enjoy fulfilling and challenging lives.
Fall Down, Laughing is the humorous and poignant story of Lander's courageous struggle with multiple sclerosis. Over the years, Lander tried everything to improve his condition: exercise programs, alternative medicine, support groups, the latest crop of designer drugs. Weaving his experiences against a backdrop of entertaining celebrity anecdotes, Lander offers a message of affirmation that will provide information and hope to millions of M.S. sufferers, their friends and caregivers.

Great Book.......2006-04-02
The book is a quick read. Sometimes you feel very alone with MS. This book will help you feel better. And, it explains some of the MS symptoms that you are experiencing better than a medical text. It will put some words on your feelings.
mixed review.......2006-02-12
I recently read this book, and I can't honestly say that I liked it. I too have been diagnosed with MS. I'm happy that Mr. Lander can find humor in his condition, however I find nothing he had to say not in the least bit funny.
MS is a terrible diease that affects the Central Nervous System and there's nothing funny about that. Even the title of the book is seriously upsetting(How Squiggy caught Multiple Sclerosis and Didn't Tell Nobody). You can't catch MS, and to put that in print is misleading.
I take my MS, the treatment for it, and all the symptoms very seriously. I have no desire to joke about them.
Some of the information in his book were very informative and very much worth reading, however I believe his approach is less than ideal.
Buy and read this book!.......2005-09-21
When my father finally told me he had MS (like David Lander, he kept it a secret), he suggested I read this book. The insight it gave me was priceless. Everyone will find their own path, but I can tell you that by sharing his experiences, Mr. Lander has helped me to be the best son (and friend) that I can be.
David Lander has a great story! .......2005-09-07
I just loved this book. It is a very quick read and very upbeat. For someone with MS or caring for someone with MS it is a story you can relate to. My husband was recently diagnosed with MS and has been very reluctant to read anything about the disease. I am going to have him read this book because while I whink it might confirm some of his fears, at the same time it does so in a positive manner.

An unflinching eyewitness account of the Ford story as told by one of Henry Ford's closest associates.
Customer Reviews:
Autobiographcial Account of His Experiences.......2005-05-13
Sorensen tells his story in a straight-forward manner. There are positive and negative aspects of this era in American history which saw the nation moving toward a better standard of living for the masses. Henry Ford comes out appearing very human. By that I mean he had some extremely admirable qualities, but at the same time he made some major mistakes that had lifelong negative consequences for his family.
Thankfully Sorensen kept a diary so the material he draws upon in this book was not skewed by trying to recall events after they had long passed. He saw Henry Ford as a man for whom a sense of responsibility was one of his strongest traits. He also said Ford never appeared to be afraid of anything. Sorensen said Ford's philosophy was, "We must go ahead without the facts; we will learn them as we go along."
Ford is described as a man who sought action, not theory. He wanted results and kept his executives free from unneccesary paperwork. Sorensen and Ford were so absorbed in their work that they worked in their "free time" to accomplish their goals. Work was play for them and the passion for the task showed.
The war years presented new challenges for Sorensen. He provides details of how he and others did the impossible in producing air craft for the nation. He and others of his ilk seemed to thrive on challenge. They were doers throughout their whole lives.
Henry Ford's biggest failure seemed to be his relationship to his son Edsel. Henry couldn't accept that fact that his son was not a duplication of himself. He never showed his son respect. Edsel appeared to be trapped in the shadow of his internationally famous dad. Ford company executives resented Edsel. He experienced physical sickness related to stress. But Sorensen says of Edsel Ford, that he "was a gentleman in the finest, fullest meaning of the word." He describe how he always presented himself in a kind and professional manner.
This book gives you a first hand account of an insider's view of an achiever. He tells it the way he saw it. Nonfiction truly is filled with suspence and odds twists. Life is mysterious.

In her revealing memoir, the author shares insights into the Saudi Arabian culture which were previously hidden to the Western world. She was taken into the inner circle of the royal family and now has chronicled her 10 years of living with a princess.
Customer Reviews:
Shifting Sands.......2007-07-15
In Shifting Sands: Life in Arabia with a Saudi Princess, the author recalls her experiences while living in Saudi Arabia. The author and her husband are Christian Americans but had always wanted to experience life in Saudi Arabia. With the Gulf War looming, it seemed as though the couple would never realize their dream. Nonetheless, in March 1991, the couple began their adventure that lasted ten years.
Initially, the author experienced horrible culture shock: living in a country where she did not speak the language, where she had no friends, where she had nothing to do all day, where there were stringent rules for women, and where her religious beliefs were illegal. At first, the author was completely overwhelmed and miserable. However, slowly she adjusted and eventually thrived in her new surroundings. She made some deep friendships, got a job that she adored, and had some truly amazing experiences that few individuals are privileged to experience.
Shifting Sands: Life in Arabia with a Saudi Princess is a touching story that illustrates that despite our cultural differences we all treasure the same things: family, friends, and a sense of worth. Moreover, the author gives us a glimpse into a world that few Westerners could even imagine let alone experience. Her story leaves the reader with new understanding and perhaps even a deeper respect for those of other cultures and beliefs. This is an important message, especially in these troubled times, when we tend to lump all Muslims together as terrorists and religious fanatics.
A deeply personal viewpoint of the intersection between vastly different cultures and the bridges to be built between both.......2005-09-13
Written twelve years after the fact, Shifting Sands: Life in Arabia with a Saudi Princess is the memoir of T.L. McCown, who shared a deep friendship with a princess in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for ten years. The experiences of two women from vastly different backgrounds in a nation divided between centuries old traditions and the ongoing press of modern globalization. Terrorism and pressure from Islamic religious police are ominous shadows over both women's lives, and the dream of bringing more independence in a nation where women are, among other things, legally forbidden to drive, is a difficult one to pursue. The ups and downs of their long journey are recounted in this personal and touching recollection of good times shared, and a sober reflection that what ultimately split true friends apart was not the dictates of world or religion, but rather utterly unforeseen circumstances. A deeply personal viewpoint of the intersection between vastly different cultures and the bridges to be built between both.

A spellbinding must-read.......2004-07-27
Shifting Sands is a spellbinding must-read for anyone who wants to understand the culture of Saudi Arabia (and who doesn't, after the events of Sept. 11?) This book resonated with me personally since my husband lives and works in Saudi Arabia. The author provided vivid descriptions of what it would be like to live on a company compound in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia (one chapter is called "Extreme Boredom" - say no more!) The book allowed me to relive the joys and frustrations of visiting Saudi Arabia. The joys: sunshine, extremely hospitable people, beautiful architecture, exotic shopping, mouthwatering foods. The frustrations: The list is long. Women have no rights there. Women cannot drive, and they face harassment from religious police if they do not cover themselves with the black abaya. (The author had several frightening run-ins with religious police regarding her failure to cover her hair with a headscarf.) I was thrilled to learn that the author, risking her own safety, had advanced the cause of women's rights there by opening a clandestine school for women. T.L. McCown's writing also reminded me of the utter frustration of trying to visit shops and restaurants when they close multiple times a day for prayer time. Frustration, however, turns to fear with the growing threat of terrorism. McCown lived in Saudi Arabia during the June 26, 1996 bombing of Khobar Towers, a place where she had taught public speaking to military personnel just two months previous. She describes in vivid detail how she fought to keep her family safe with the prospect of terrorism looming right outside her doors.
In conclusion, this book has one major flaw. For 354 pages, the author successfully foreshadows the demise of her extraordinary relationship with a Saudi princess and the need for the author's family to eventually leave Saudi Arabia. In the end, the author never explains precisely why any of this happened! The last sentence seems to imply that the author is working on a sequel. Still, to come to the end of a book and have it drop off the end of a cliff with no proper conclusion is extremely irritating.
Interesting.......2004-04-29
T.L. McCown did a great job of revealing life in Saudi to the reader. It amazes me the life the royal lead. I still can't get over the camping trip they took! I reccomend this to anyone!

Book Description
In August of 1758, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, a poor Irish immigrant named Mary Madden bore a child, Sarah Madden, whose father was said to be a slave and the property of Colonel James Madison, father of the future president of the United States. This daughter, though born to a free mulatto, became indentured to the Madisons. There she worked as a seamstress to pay off the fine of her birth until she was thirty-one years old.
Sarah Madden bore ten children; when the term of her indenture was over, she and her youngest son, Willis, struck out for themselves -- Sarah as a seamstress, laundress, and later, with Willis, a dairy farmer and tavern keeper.
Spanning two hundred years of American history, We Were Always Free tells its story with remarkable completeness. we can thank Sarah Madden and her descendants for keeping their family narrative alive -- and for saving hundreds of important documents detailing their freedom, hardship, and daily work.
These documents came to light in 1949 when T. O. Madden Jr. discovered a hidebound trunk originally belonging to his great-grandfather Willis. Stored in the trunk were papers dating back to the mid-eighteenth century, freedom papers, papers of indenture, deeds of land, Sarah Madden's laundry and seamstress record books, letters, traveling passes. The trunk even held a full set of business records from the nineteenth century when Madden's Tavern flourished as a center of activity in Orange County and as a rest stop on the road to Fredericksburg.
From that day forward, T. O. Madden deeply researched his family, using census reports, other official sources, family, and friends. All have led to his ably reconstructed family history, and to his own remarkable story.
We Were Always Free is a unique and very American family saga.

Timely thoughts!.......2003-01-26
As George W. continues to nudge our nation closer and closer to war, perhaps it would be wise to recall the emotional turbulence of the Vietnam era. This book will take you there, chronicling the personal odyssey of a young Episcopalian priest serving as a campus minister. Written in journal form, journey with Father Tom as he deals with, and I quote: "Vietnam, civil rights, politics, student unrest, Kent State, urban warfare, problem pregnancies, therapy, intimacy, murder, sex, drugs." Need I say more?
