Book Description

Just Left of the Setting Sun is a collection of non-fiction essays by a young Chamoru scholar-activist from the island of Guam. These essays reflect the present-day reality of the indigenous people of the island of Guam. This book is framed in the context of an island that exists amidst the many conflicts and contradictions of being "freed from colonialism" by another colonial power in 1898 and "liberated from wartime aggression" by a country that put in under a Naval Administration until the 1960s and who worked to eliminate the culture of the local people through forced assimilation and nominal citizenship. It is written to articulate the reality of the Chamoru people of Guam as an indigenous Pacific Island culture, an American minority group, and an island people threatened by the encroachment of globalization into their lives. These essays will cause the reader to think critically on the subjects of globalization, sustainable development, sustainable governance, cultural reclamation, and self-determination on Guam, amongst the indigenous and colonized peoples in the world, question the value of democracy if it is involuntarily imposed on a people. This book is especially relevant for the present state of the world. Just Left is included in an academic series that we publish,'The 1898 Consciousness Studies Series'. This series is a varied collection of essays on consciousness today in areas affected by the Spanish-American War and consequent possession by the U.S. These include The Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. Praise for Just Left of the Setting Sun "Fierce and compassionate, bold and resolute, Just Left of the Setting Sun is at once a coming into consciousness as it is a conch-shell blare for action by and for a new generation of Chamorros, the indigenous people of an island and archipelago long colonized by Spain, Japan and the United States of America. As critical towards fellow Chamorros who aid and abet the colonizer as he is of the colonizers themselves, Aguon also importantly situates the need for Native Struggles for Political and Cultural Self-Determination and Sovereignty within Feminist/Womanist critiques and global struggles for economic, social, and environmental justice, thereby providing a glimpse into the possibilities for local struggle informed and articulated to global movements beyond pan-indigenous movements per se, and for keeping global movements and political theory grounded in Indigenous traditions." Vicente M. Diaz Associate Professor of American Culture University of Michigan, Ann Arbor "Aguon re-introduces us to the principles of international law as a guiding framework to the resolution of the dilemma brought about by the present non self-governing arrangements which provide the trappings of democratic governance, but in reality are rather democratically deficient by any objective examination. Indeed, an important component of new millennium colonialism is the existence, but not the recognition, of this democratic deficit... ..."Just Left of the Setting Sun" should be required reading for the people in the remaining territories, young and old, who need to discover/re-discover the fire within, that they might further move the process forward, if only by a few steps further along the continuum. In a very real sense, as Aguon observes, "inside the heart of the Chamoru is still an ocean of latent potentialities waiting to surge." Dr. Carlyle Corbin Advisor on Governance and Political Development St. Croix, Virgin Islands

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites from Piers.......2006-07-18

When I first read this book, I was only familiar with Anthony's science fiction and fantasy works, such as the Xanth series and the Incarnations of Immortality, so when I read the blurb and saw the subject matter, I was a bit skeptical. I've read and re-read this book countless times now, and it's become my favorite from Piers.

His usual wit and gift of knowing how to make you care about the characters is there, and I still have to swallow a lump in my throat at times. Even if you've never heard of any of the pre-Seminole Florida tribes, even if you're not a history buff, this is an amazing read. I can't recommend it strongly enough.

5 out of 5 stars My personal favorite!.......2005-09-02

Thought I am young in the years, I have done my share of reading. In all the novels and other stories I have read nothing has come close to beating this one as number one. I absolutely love this book. It's a creative story and inventive view about live back when. With myths and other smaller stories entwined, this book is a hard to put done read. I recommend this book to everyone who asks me, "Know any good books." And all who have read it have told me the same thing. "Thanks for recommending that book. I couldn't put it down. It was a great read."

5 out of 5 stars It took me forever to find this book!!!.......2002-12-12

It was well worth the wait, a breath taking read. I hope he writes more historical fiction, his style is very good and the story will keep you up at night to see the end.

5 out of 5 stars History and Heroism.......2000-04-21

Tathem Mound is a wonderful book about a native Floridan, circa 1500. It includes many cutures in the area including Maya, Creek and Cherokee. It also tells some of the myths in the Native Oral Tradition beautifuly. It gives insight to what may have happened within a native family around the time when the conqestadors first landed. Due to sexual content, it may not be sutible to younger readers, but the myths make lovely bedtime stories.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent book with only a few minor drawbacks........1999-02-05

Piers Anthonys book "Tatham Mound" was an excellent story. From the beginning it is exciting and gives one a very in depth and real idea of what Native American life might have been like. I recommend it to readers from teen up. The whole plot is well laid out. A few parts may drag a little but, as always, Mr. Anthony never leaves you disappointed.

          Book Description

"A landmark that will easily become a classic reference in the field . . . An accessible and detailed treatment of some of the best modern scholarship regarding the archaeology of a late prehistoric-early historic era burial mound in the Southeastern United States . . . provides specialists and non-specialists alike with an engaging account of Tatham Mound and what it reveals regarding the lives and deaths of Native Americans at the cusp of the European colonial era."--John E. Worth, author of The Timucuan Chiefdoms of Spanish Florida

"Hutchinson's comprehensive bioarchaeological interpretation captures the unique value of Tatham Mound, which exemplifies, by its physical structure and key cultural and biological features of its burials, the biological consequences of the Spanish invasion of La Florida."--Mary Lucas Powell, editor, Paleopathology Newsletter

This is the first systematic analysis of Tatham Mound, one of the most important archaeological sites in Central Gulf Coast Florida. Because it documents the earliest years of contact between the resident Native Americans of the area and European colonists, Tatham Mound has provided archaeologists and bioarchaeologists with a wealth of direct and indirect evidence from the early contact period--a rare occurrence in American archaeology. Hutchinson examines the skeletal remains of more than 350 burials, a few skeletons bearing evidence of trauma from European weapons, as well as the European artifacts found within those burials. Comparing the bioarchaeological evidence and scientific data with the historic accounts of the early Spanish explorers, Hutchinson challenges the long-held theory that novel pathogens caused the immediate demographic collapse of native societies at the inception of the European colonial era. He argues that long-term political, social, economic, and biological changes--in addition to introduced epidemic disease--all contributed to the decline of Florida's native populations.

Incorporating numerous maps of the burials from Tatham Mound, a large number of photographs of the artifacts interred with them, and thorough documentation of the burials with regard to both biology and mortuary practice, Hutchinson interweaves archaeological and ethnohistoric evidence to present a complete picture of native and newcomer interaction in the region. Hutchinson also places this evidence within a broader historical and scientific context so that it represents a local case study applicable to a very wide geographical area. Relevant well beyond Central Gulf Coast Florida, this volume will be useful to scholars in the fields of bioarchaeology, physical anthropology, archaeology, history/ethnohistory, and Native American studies.

I am 45.5 years old and I am roughly 40% gray -- the rest of my hair is dark brown. I've dyed my hair a number of times -- but frankly, I don't really like the chemicals that much and I also hate spending the time and money to keep the color looking good. My husband has been trying to convince me to "embrace the gray" and after reading this book, I am convinced that I do want to stick with my gray hair and I am now feeling that no matter how gray it gets, I have ideas for how I can keep looking attractive, vibrant, and healthy. To be honest, I don't think hair color fools anybody that much -- everywhere I look, I just see middle aged people with dyed hair. I think being gray is actually more interesting -- but it does require confidence and self-esteem. There are two things the book completely omits: (1) the environmental impact of hair color and (2) hair color and cruelty -- I assume many hair dyes are tested on animals, at least I am quite certain this is true of Clairol products. As I look around me, I am noticing that a lot of women would just simply age better if they would keep their bodies in shape -- being slender and athletic, well-groomed, and with a chic hairstlyle -- I feel that this is the way to go. Embrace the gray and get healthy!

Thank you, thank you, thank you Diana! I have looked and looked for information on how to celebrate my gray (silver and white) hair and your book has finally put it all in one place. Can't thank you enough for the excellent, inspiring information. Pamela D. Blair, Author The Next Fifty Years: A Guide for Women at Mid-Life And Beyond

5 out of 5 stars Being your Best, Being Yourself .......2007-06-21

This is a bravo beauty book! And brave, because Ms. Jewell was the first to say it's ok to go gray--long before all the magazines jumped on the bandwagon. She never says what you have to do about, she says what you CAN do about it. You can color it, you can let it go gray naturally, you can enhance it if you don't like the way it did go gray. There are so many options in this book that every woman can find a solution or an idea. Even if she likes her gray just the way it is. But maybe she doesn't know what colors to wear, or if she should change her makeup or not. The author never sets up "rules"--she gives you real reasons why you may feel better if you make a few changes. Or big changes, too--but she leaves it up to you. I mean, there are women out there who want to know all the latest "procedures"--and so she tells you what they are. The message is not that you HAVE to look younger, it's more about feeling good about yourself. Having confidence in your own appearance, and being happy with whatever you choose to do about it. There's a whole head trip that goes on about going gray, and she covers that very well--and offers a lot of practical advice on how you can come to your own conclusions about it, one way or the other.

She also mentions, among many reasons that women decide to go gray, is that they are tired of putting chemicals on their hair, and even younger women are now cautious about ever putting chemicals on their hair. As a confirmed "chemical user" that never entered my mind--I see their points, but I also liked the fact that, if I choose to, I can do things to make my gray look better, like highlighting or lowlighting. That's why I say there is something for everybody--from every point of view--in this book.

I especially liked the way she named specific products for specific hair problems like yellowing, dryness, frizz. I don't have time to stand in front of a lot of products and read the ingredient list (although she tells you the "good" ingredients, too). I'd rather have someone say--try this product and name the name. It's like your best girlfriend would tell you. And so Ms. Jewell names a lot of names, some you can find at lower prices, some at higher, but they are all grouped to solve a problem, so if you shop at drugstores or department stores, you'll find something to try. She never says you have to buy the most expensive ones at all, but does tell you why they cost more--and others don't. The point is to take good care of your hair, and maybe it's time to change what you've been using all your life because it doesn't give gray hair the kind of tender loving care it needs. The same thing is true about products for your face--which she also suggests because women who go gray often feel they look washed out. What I got out of it is just to buy the best products you can afford, but that you can find good ones at all prices. I'd much rather have a book like this, chock full of information than one that promises to tell me with the author has learned about life, love, and pursuit of happiness while going gray. At this stage of the game, I think I've figured that out for myself. I just want someone to tell me what to do with my HAIR. Ms. Jewell does, and I'm very grateful.

3 out of 5 stars The Artificial Approach to Going Gray: Faking Youth.......2007-04-30

I was very excited to discover this book existed, since I'm growing out my dyed hair to allow my gray to show. It is hard to find any information on caring for gray hair, since in America it's assumed that a woman will start dyeing her hair the minute she spots her first gray hair. I was discouraged to find this book was already out of print, even though it was published in 2004. I managed to track down a copy at my local library, to my delight.

When I sat down to read it I was at first very happy with this book. It had many interviews with women who had let their hair go gray, and talked about their experiences. It had a lot of affirmations for gray hair that inspired me. The discussions of what to do to keep your hair from getting the `yellow' tinge gray hair can acquire (stay out of the sun, avoid water with a high mineral content, avoid harsh alkaline chemicals such as permanent waves and straightening) and what colors in clothing and makeup best suited gray hair were very helpful to me.

But I was horribly disappointed with the turn the book took halfway through. The author encourages "looking younger" by using BOTOX or collagen injections. She advocates using expensive "age defying" moisturizers and makeup lines. Though many sources of skepticism about the claims of these expensive beauty products exist, she asserts that the more expensive products really do help. She lists products from very expensive companies that she swears are "worth" the cost, and will make women look younger and better. Not only cosmetics, but expensive hair styling products and shampoos and conditioners are raved about. She also recommends going to a colorist and having your hair highlighted/lowlighted so that your gray hair will "pop." The message seems to be that if a woman decides to go gray she must counteract the negativity of this image by being hyper-fashionable in all other ways, having a short stylish cut, using expensive beauty products and styling products, using minor cosmetic surgical procedures to look artificially young, and especially dyeing her hair to keep it looking "gorgeously gray" in a very fake manner.

I can't tell you how this disappointed me. The author's message that a woman can't truly embrace her natural looks, that even her gray hair isn't really `gray' hair, but a styled and dyed approximation of what gray hair looks like, a la Hollywood, makes me horribly saddened.

I believe the author and publishers really mistook their target audience here, which I suspect is the reason this book is out of print. I believe the reasons most women let their hair go gray include 1) being fed up with the expense and hassle of dyeing hair, 2) a desire to stop poisoning their body with carcinogenic chemicals, and 3) a desire to embrace their true age and stop trying to be artificially young. If I wanted to look artificially young and didn't mind exposing myself to carcinogens in makeup and personal care products I'd just keep dyeing my hair, without question. And if the expense and hassle of dyeing my hair is too much for me, what on earth would make me want to buy or even be able to afford highly expensive products or cosmetic surgeries?

I was also disappointed with the way natural hair dyes were presented. They were dismissed by the author and many of her interviewees as "turning the hair orange." The web site Henna for Hair tells that pure henna does in fact turn solid white hair orange, but adding tea tree oil or lavender oil will counteract this effect, and give the hair the true red color that henna is known for. For those who don't necessarily want gray hair yet, but are disturbed by the harsh chemicals of commercial dyes, body art quality henna and indigo and various other herbs can create beautiful natural hair colors of red, brown and black. As in all other areas, the author emphasizes the chemical and artificial over any natural products for hair and skin.

I'm glad I read this book, since I did get some good ideas on color and styles, and good affirmations for gray hair. The early parts where many gray-haired women stated that age is an attitude and that if you act or feel old you'll be treated old, regardless of hair color, rings true. I hope that someday someone writes a book about going gray for women who are doing so because they want to use more natural products and avoid dangerous chemicals, in both hair dye and cosmetics. That would be the gray hair book I'd cherish.

I'm looking forward to the book `Going Gray: What I Learned about Beauty, Sex, Work, Motherhood, Authenticity, and Everything Else That Really Matters' by Anne Kreamer. It comes out in a few months. I've read the article for `More' magazine that inspired it, and I'm hoping that this book will be the book about gray hair that I've been looking for.

Owned by its chef Maria Martin and her husband Maurizio, Da Fiore is a much-lauded Venetian seafood restaurant. Son Damiano Martin's The Da Fiore Cookbook offers almost 100 recipes from the restaurant, from antipasti to desert. Whether "traditional," such as Mediterranean-Style Ceviche or Marinated Striped Bass with Aromatic Herbs, or more original, like Fried Soft-Shell Crabs on Arugula and Orange Salad and Chestnut-Filled Calamari, the simply conceived but deeply flavorful dishes are uniformly exciting. Though the recipes are easy enough to prepare, their success for the home cook will depend largely on ingredient freshness—there's no hiding place in these dishes for less than the best. Cooks should also be aware that some of the ingredients called for--imperial shrimp, for example--are either unavailable here or, like John Dory Fillets, hard to come by. (In some, but not all cases, substitutions have been suggested.)

Apart from "entrees," the book offers a tempting array of soups, pastas, and vegetable recipes such as Asparagus and Parmigiano Custard, Penette with Sea Scallops and Broccoli Florets, and Porcini Mushroom and Onion Soup. A small dessert chapter yields delicious finales like Venetian Fried Cream and Sweet Focaccia with Figs, plus an enticing selection of cookie formulas. The author also provides a brief tour of Venice, plus a discussion of its unique "flavors." Also helpful is seafood buying instruction, which includes the insight that smaller fish are more delicate and sweeter tasting than larger specimens. The book is illustrated with color photos. --Arthur Boehm

                  Book Description

The Wine Spectator calls the family-owned da Fiore the best restaurant in Venice. The New York Times praises chef Mara Martin and her husband, Maurizio, as "the city's most respected restaurateurs," known internationally for their food, regional wine list, and hospitality. In his appreciation, Victor Hazan writes, "Marcella and I raise our glasses to what you have achieved and to what, since you are both so amazingly young still, you may yet accomplish." Now, in The da Fiore Cookbook, their son, Damiano Martin, pays tribute to his parents' vision, sharing their recipes and their passion for Venice.

Da Fiore is renown for its seasonal menus that follow the ebb and flow of the Venetian lagoon and the Aegean and Mediterranean seas along with the orchards and farms of the surrounding Veneto. When the lagoon closes for a few weeks twice a year to allow the fish population to replenish itself, the restaurant takes a rest as well, upholding its high standards of serving local fresh food.

In autumn, da Fiore's visitors are treated to dishes such as Fried Soft-Shell Crabs on Arugula and Orange Salad and hearty Porcini Mushroom and Onion Soup. When scallops are at their richest and meatiest during the winter months, Mara combines them with the natural sweetness of broccoli in Pennette with Sea Scallops and Broccoli Florets. Spring heralds in a host of vegetables, inspiring dishes such as Fusilli with Squid and Peas and Asparagus and Parmigiano Custard.

And in the summer months, Mara serves signature dishes such asRed Mullet Stars with Fresh Figs and Mint and the simple, yet elegantRolled Fillet of Sole with Zucchini. Desserts, too, are seasonal, ranging from the wintry Chestnut Mousse with Persimmon Sauce to a bowl of chilled Fruit Soup, a refreshing summertime treat, and the traditional Sweet Carnival Fritters enjoyed in early spring. There are suggested American substitutions for traditional Venetian ingredientsin all the recipes.

Accompany the Martin family as they throw open wide the doors to the magical city of Venice. Stroll through the markets of Venice with Mara as she shops for the freshest ingredients. Discover the city's rich culinary history and traditions through Damiano's delightful narrative. Explore the outstanding wines of the Veneto with Maurizio's wine-pairing suggestions.

Whether you've been to Venice or intend to travel there some day, The da Fiore Cookbook brings the unique spirit of Venice's Osteria da Fiore to your own kitchen.

I've not bought or read this book, however, what I can say is that this restaurant is unquestionably one of the top 5 restaurants I've yet had the pleasure of eating at. Finding it requires nerves of steel, especially if you are walking from San Marco, as it is to be found as an oasis of culinary excellence in a labrynth of time etched architecture. The service can be described with one word : class. The food, with a menu that changes daily depending on the ingredients available, was true art. This is not food of the nouvelle cuisine variety but rather food that is a direction indicator ~ this must be one of the leading edge restaurants in Italy, which is fusing old ideas with modern presentation. The after taste of the food was of unquestionably traditional tastes and flavours.

5 out of 5 stars Genuine Venetian Cuisine, Worthy of the Hype.......2003-12-24

Why would you want to buy another cookbook from an Italian restaurant, especially from one without a famous chef's name like Batali or Colicchio or Bartoli? I opened this book expecting to find reasons to dismiss this book as unworthy of our interest. I found no such reasons, and several reasons to give this book a reasonable amount of attention.

First, this is genuine Venetian cuisine, not Venetian cuisine interpreted by an American or English writer. The cuisine of the da foiore lives and breaths by the pulse of the Venetian fish markets and the seasons of fishing in the Adriatic. Recipes are also true to the region in focusing on rice and corn meal (polenta), and soft pasta dishes most common in the north, especially those close to the prime rice growing area in Europe. There is also an appropriate mix of Middle Eastern influences harking back to the days when Venice was THE spice merchant of Europe.

Second, the recipes are delightful, with a bright mix of the fish and an accompanying vegetable, changing slightly the Italian pairing of separate secondo and contorno dishes. I concur with the author's contention that these are indeed simple recipes. They may not be easy, but they should take less time than usual to master. Virtually all protein is seafood from the northern Adriatic, `right off the boat'. There is a high concentration of bivalve, cephalopod (squid, cuddlefish, and octopus), shrimp, and finfish recipes. There are few lobster or crab dishes and beef, chicken, and veal are not even listed in the index.

Third, this may be an Italian cuisine which may be most familiar to Americans after the southern Italian tomato drenched cuisine of tomatoes, hard pasta, and pizza. I was never a great fan of Tuscan dishes, but this cuisine backed by the wines of the Veneto, Bardolino, Valpolicella, Soave, and Prosecco is much more attractive to me than the Chianti of Tuscony or the hundreds of newer wines from Italy on the market. Then there is also grappa to make life just a little more interesting.

My most delightful discovery in this book is to find the word, `cicheti' for the Italian counterpart of the Greek and Turkish meze which has become a very popular subject of cookbook authors of late, who make a point of saying that Greek meze is not the same as antipasti. Another interesting discovery is that unlike much of the rest of Italy, Venetians are not horrified at the thought of putting cheese on fish, although they do not do it commonly with the very strong dried cheeses such as parmesan or pecorino romano.

Even though the book is written by a man, the true author of the recipes is the author's mother, true to the great Mediterranean tradition of cuisine being the woman's provence.

If you already have 20 or more Italian cookbooks, then you have to wrestle with your own obsessions to determine if this is worth the investment. At $35 without the celebrity byline, this may be a bit much, but I recommend it none the less, especially if you are a great fan of seafood.
