Book Description
"James Lee Burke tells a story in a style all his own, in language that's alive, electric. He's a master at setting mood, laying in atmosphere, all with quirky dialogue that's a delight." -- Elmore Leonard
In James Lee Burke's last novel featuring Billy Bob Holland, Bitterroot, the former Texas Ranger left his home state to help a friend threatened by the most dangerous sociopath Billy Bob had ever faced. After vanquishing a truly iniquitous collection of violent individuals, Billy moved his family to west Montana and hung out a shingle for his law practice. But in In the Moon of Red Ponies, he discovers that jail cells have revolving doors and that the government he had sworn to serve may have become his enemy.
His first client in Missoula is Johnny American Horse, a young activist for land preservation and the rights of Native Americans. Johnny is charged with the murder of two mysterious men -- who seem to have recently tried to kill Johnny themselves, or at least scare him off his political causes. As Billy Bob investigates, he discovers a web of intrigue surrounding the case and its players: Johnny's girlfriend, Amber Finley, as reckless as she is defiant -- and the daughter of one of Montana's U.S. senators; Darrel McComb, a Missoula police detective who is obsessed with Amber; and Seth Masterson, an enigmatic government agent whose presence in town makes Billy Bob wonder why Washington has become so concerned with an obscure murder case on the fringes of the Bitterroot Mountains.
As complications mount and the dead bodies multiply, Billy Bob is drawn closer to the truth behind Johnny American Horse's arrest -- and discovers a greater danger to himself and to his whole family. How Billy Bob strikes back at evil and protects his kin is the masterful triumph of In the Moon of Red Ponies.
Beautifully written, with an intriguing plot and characters whose conflicts seem as real as life itself, this novel shows James Lee Burke again in the top form that has made him a critical favorite and a national bestseller.

Customer Reviews:
In the Moon of Red Ponies.......2006-07-31
The reader is hard to get used to, the story good, lot of twists and turns, keeps you interested.
Writing because he can.......2006-04-21
I've read just about everything Burke has written and this is one of the worst. The various parts just don't fit together and I found myself drumming my fingers and wishing it would just end. I suppose the good news is that it did. More and more the author has his main characters wallowing in self analysis and contemplating their navels at great length. If you like that you like it but there's too much of it for me. In addition the plot is kind of pasted together and imparts no belief that it could happen as written or that it makes sense. And the actions of the protagonist become increasingly tiresome. Enough.
Billy Bob and Temple just can't cut it.......2006-02-14
Having become a James Lee Burke junkie over the last year, I couldn't wait to read "Moon". What a disappointment. Billy Bob and Temple in Montana just can't compare to Dave and Bootsie in Louisiana! The action wanes when it needs to wax - and Cletus is no where around to spice it up. If you like the Bayou stories, I'm afraid the Bitteroot Mountains won't elicit quite the same reading anticipation.
Burke fans will like this one.......2006-02-07
I'm a huge fan of the always-on-edge Robicheaux, Clete Purcell and I'd even buy a book all about Batiste. (Listening J.L.?) Billy Bob Holland is another matter. More in the mold of a Former Action Guy who occasionally has his placid semi-retirement disturbed by miscreants, BB has to take action and show he's still got it. If you're spoiled on the constant action of the Robicheaux novels, Billy Bob might not be your cup o' tea. Then again, he might.
A good read........2006-01-15
Redemption of character is the theme in this novel. Billy Bob Holland is the unwilling participant in a plot that concentrates on a number of diverse characters, all of whom trying to redeem themselves in their own eyes.
The theme is a common one in Burke's books and one in which I enjoy. This novel is well-written and worth your time in purchasing.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A small bit of Tick info, but you are better off just getting the actual material, itself. Then again, if it is only $2, no real harm done.
This book is nigh-invulnerable!.......2002-05-20
However, my cat did get at one corner and chew it up in one of her chew-toy phases.....
Here, collected into one shiney red volume, is nigh-everything you needed to know about the Tick. All of his wit, wonder, and convoluted logic. Here also is Arthur's angst, American Maid's shoe specs, the occasional appearance by the always well-groomed Die Fladermaus, and a liberal helping of everyone's 2nd favourite super-villain, the Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs at Midnight. Of course, our favourite villain is the Man Eating Cow, but she doesn't talk.
The book is full of illustrations and little bubbles with useful Tick-isms. There are bios on all the Tick's superhero friends, as well as his supervillain nemeses. Most helpful is Arthur's casebook, chronicling his and the Tick's adventures battling crime in The City (this is essentially an episode guide of the animated TV series).
Unfortunately, there is little new here that isn't in the TV shows. However, it's a great book for the coffee table, one where you can start and stop reading anywhere and find something funny. Anyone entertained by the show will definitely like this book.
The nearly perfect guide to the Tick TV animated series.......2001-12-17
Greg Hyland (of Lethargic Lad fame) did a great job on this hilarious book that has a nearly complete episode guide, a list of heroes and villains and hero lessons in this awesome book. Greg Hyland did great work and knows how to get a belly laugh out of me. Only Ben Edlund himself could have done it better. Great book for fans of the animated series. The only problem is that they should have waited for the series to finish so they could have a more complete book.

God I love this book..........2001-06-03
I love The Tick. The Tick is keen, which is why this book is so neccesary for anyone who fancies themselves a fan of The Tick.
Starting out as a comic book (which it still is) The Tick was then turned into a television show on the famed Fox kids network. Unfortunately, the genius behind the Tick was apparantly big on procrastination, never having episodes ready on time. This prompted the cancallation of the program, but I'll always still love it. Even 5 years later, it remains one of my favourite shows of all time. There was so much humour that I never got when I was little. But now, I pick up on the jokes that I never understood when I was a child of the tender age of 9.
Anyways, this book collects the plot of 34 of the 36 shows released before it's cancellation, a guide to becoming a superhero, info on finding a sidekick, the Tick's origin, interviews, and even "Arthurs Section Of Scientific Facts So That This Book Can Legitimately Be Read In School." There is a guide to other superheroes, supervilians (including the Man Eating Cow who just so happens to look like and act like a normal cow), and the list of questions and answers that were often read and replied to at the end of the shows.
This book left me in stitches laughing the first time I read it, and even now it remains one of the funniest books I've ever read. It's not conventional humor, but it remains oh so funny. If you like The Tick and wondered why it was taken off the air, and if you can't get enough of anything Tick, then you need to get this book. This is probably the only book I can read that remains as funny the third and fourth time through as it is the first time... Midnight Bomber Sez: So he says, "You wanna' be a bad guy?" and I says, I says "Yeah baby! Surf's up Space Ponies! I'm making gravy without the lumps! AAAHHHHHAAHHHH!" (note: If you're still searching for your fix of the Tick until the start of the live-action show, check out the Canadian cable station "Teletoon" (Ch. 45). They air it weeknights at 9:30 pm.
How keen is that?

Book Description
Will police work change the person you love? Are police marriages destined to fail? What are the chances of your loved one being killed in the line of duty? Since its publication nearly a decade ago, I Love a Cop has earned high praise from family members and police departments worldwide for providing answers to these and other critical questions. Now, this trusted resource has been revised to address the realities of post-9/11, post-Katrina police work. New topics include coping with separations and long deployments, building resilience, and finding opportunities for growth in the wake of traumatic experiences. The book also provides up-to-date information on organizational stress, alcohol abuse, domestic violence, and special challenges faced by women and minorities on the force. Whether they read it cover to cover or refer to it when problems arise, families will find no-nonsense advice and resources they can depend on.

I Love A Cop: What Police Families Need To Know.......2007-09-17
This book should be given to every graduate of Peace Officers Academies to be read with their families. It covers some crucial aspects that every recruit should know before embarking on this dangerous career. This book could help save families, as well as the sanity of its members.
Must have book for law officers.......2007-05-13
This was such a great book I bought one for me and one for my family. I only wish I had bought it sooner.
Intended especially for the loved ones of police offers.......2007-04-12
Written by clinical psychologist Ellen Kirschman, Ph.D., whose specific area of expertise lies in helping police officers and their families, I Love a Cop: What Police Families Need To Know is a straightforward, "tell-the-facts" guide, now in a newly revised edition, written especially for the significant others, spouses, and family members of police officers. Being a cop is a demanding job, and sometimes the very skills required for competence - such as being able to suppress strong emotions like fear, anger, or even compassion - are harmful to officers' private and personal lives if carried over to the home. I Love a Cop gives practical, no-nonsense advice to what to expect from the demands of the job, coping with stress or trauma, and much more. Of especial value are the chapters about dealing with domestic abuse, threats of suicide, or other severe cases and problems - including how to recognize the warning signs and when there is no other option than to just get out. Though I Love a Cop is intended especially for the loved ones of police offers, its solid advice is also highly recommended for the loved ones of anyone in a high-stress, risky or demanding occupation. I Love a Cop is also highly recommended as supplemental reading for anyone considering a policing career, as there is also plenty of sage wisdom about what to expect on the job and how to balance demands of the job with those of family life.
Not what I expected.......2007-01-19
The book I love a cop , was a good title for the book if it was for a spouse of a married cop, but it didn't reaLLY COVER WHAT i EXPECTED , being married to a cop I look for soources that will help me and in this book there was alot of jibber jabber that I wasn't intersted in reading for that reason I'm sending it back . 3 stars to the title which was for me was what made me want to buy it, but don't waste your time unless you and your husband are cops.

Book Description
Will police work change the person you love? Are police marriages destined to fail? What are the chances of your loved one being killed in the line of duty? Separating fact from myth, Dr. Ellen Kirschman answers these and other critical questions in the first comprehensive self-help book created specifically for today's police families. In information-filled chapters, readers will go behind the scenes with other police families as they discuss the benefits and pitfalls of police work; learn how to manage the effects of organizational stress and the pressures of unpredictable schedules, long hours and loneliness; gain awareness of the emotional, physical, and behavioral warning signs which can lead to such extreme situations as posttraumatic stress, alcoholism, suicide and domestic violence; find out where families can go for help and counseling; and get an inside look at cop couples and the special challenges facing women, minorities, and gays and lesbians on the force.
Customer Reviews:
Read this book........2007-01-10
I am in the helping profession myslf, so I know that good literature that is specific to ones self-help needs is extremely difficult to obtain. If you love someone that is a police officer, read this book. It's that simple, and you will NOT be sorry.
Very Helpful and Easy Read.......2006-08-27
This book is very helpful with practical advise about how to live in a cop's family. It deals with the day to day realities as well as the traumas that go along with living with a cop. It was an easy read that didnt give a bunch of doctor jargon. I highly recomend this book to anyone that lives with a cop, is a cop, or just wants to understand what its like to be a cop.
All Police Families...A MUST Read!.......2006-08-20
What a wonderfully put together book on cops. How to handle the many issues that come along with loving a cop, what both the cop and their families go through, and how to help them get to the end of their careers safely full family intact. Every police recruit, spouse/partner should read this book. Can't say enough about it!
Very useful book.......2006-05-25
I was assigned this book to read in one of my AJ classes and I'm really glad I did. I will be the cop in my family, not the spouse, but there are still important things to think about for the cops themselves. My husband has started to read it to know what he should be prepared for.
I think this book will prevent, maybe even help resolve, marital problems in cop families. It's important to know how eachother are feeling about the career, and sometimes things go unspoken. Ellen Kirschman will help you find those words you need to say.
I only gave it 4 stars because I don't really like her writing style. It was choppy and ambiguous in parts, in my opinion. Some of it was hard to get through- not because of the content, but because of the writing style. Needless to say, it doesn't take away from the main point of the book.
I highly recommend this book to cops and their families.
I only wished.......2006-02-28
I only wished this book had come out 20 years ago. I also grew up in an LEO family and this book touched on a lot of things that I encountered growing up. Child of a cop growing up in the city that he worked in. This book shows people even outside of the thin blue line what really happens on the homefront.

Customer Reviews:
A waste of my money, but maybe not a waste of yours........2007-05-14
Had I found this book in a bookstore instead of online, I wouldn't have purchased it. There are no pictures in it, which, for me, is essential in a cookbook. Also, all the recipes sound so obscure, I can't even talk my family into letting me make any of it. None of the ingredients are anything I already have, so making anything from this book would be pricey. However, if you already have these items, and a family willing to try anything, and you don't mind being completely surprised by the final product, then I recommend giving this book a try.
Exotic Items, Hardly!.......2005-05-26
I do not think items like nutritional yeast, kelp powder, or miso is exotic. I have three misos in my refrigerator right now and both nutritional yeast and kelp powder. Once you build a vegetarian kitchen, these items become staples.
Eating vegetarian and a having healthy vegetarian diet requires some re-wiring of thoughts on food. If you are new to cooking healthy vegetarian foods, then I suppose, they might sound exotic. I live in a meat eating town (coneys and burgers are the staple) and I can find almost any of these "exotic" items in my local health food store.
Bryanna Clark Grogan kicks butt in the kitchen!.......2003-04-08
EXCELLENT! A must have. I have been vegan for a little over 7 months now and this is the first book I've found that is consistently good, fast, healthy, economical, and so delicious that even my non-vegan husband didn't pull a face when I presented him with the carrot-oat patties and brown gravy. Recipes for substitutes for egg, meat, fish, cream, and cheese are found throughout the text (the Melty Pizza Cheeze is mild and not disgusting like a lot of the faux vegan subs)as well as quick meal suggestions. I own a few other vegan recipe books and, although they have beautiful recipes, I find that they are not fast or simple enough for the everday- gotta -get- the- meal- on-while-kids-are-screaming- life that I lead. Some say the recipes take 30 minutes-I don't think that matters. If it is under 45 minutes then it is a quick meal. Gourmet vegan menus can take hours sometimes. This book will be the one with gravy splatters and juice stains. I highly reccommend it.
This is the book I'd wish I'd had 10 years ago ..........2002-11-17
... when I became a vegan. Perhaps this book ought to have been entitled "30 minutes to dinner" instead - yet this shouldn't put any people off, and as the previous comment rightly states, the negative critics given by some people is completely unjust! Bryanna is - in my opinion - one of the most innovative vegan cooks, and I can recommend any of her books (I have them all myself). Not only is the book about quick vegan meals, they are also extremely low-fat, yet all are rich-tasting delicious meals - AND as also mentioned below - the ingredients are easily available in health food stores (even in Denmark where I live!) If you do not have a food processor, get one now, as this is one equipment that Bryanna uses very frequently in her books. The opening chapter is about cooking & shopping tips, and this is very useful for planning your meals, as well as making a lot of your basics yourself - it's cheaper and you're sure not to get any weird extra-ingredients! There's a chapter on speedy dips and spreads, lovely soups and chowders (check out the sea vegetable chowder!), inventive salads (the oriental noodle salad is sooo delicious!), pasta dishes, quick pizzas, extensive sandwich and all kinda stuffed breads ideas, grilled alternatives to meat (tofu & seitan), stirfries, ... the book is simply jampacked with ideas and variations so that you can use what you have at hand. It is a superb cookbook, and it's definitely recommended!
Passes New Orleans food test!.......2002-11-06
I own four cookbooks by Bryanna Clark Grogan, and plan on buying the rest. They are all EXCELLENT. I was born and raised in New Orleans, so I think I can claim to know what good food tastes like. The negative reviews of this book just blow my mind. The only people who might not like Bryanna's recipes are folks who think a McDonald's drive through is gourmet eating. And Bryanna's recipe ingredients are not hard to find at all; I don't know what that reviewer is talking about. I live in the country, two hours drive from a major city, and most of the ingredients can be found in my local, very rural grocery store. For those in an urban environment, ANY health food store will have nutritional yeast flakes and kelp. Hello! Don't you have a Whole Foods or a Trader Joes? Switching to a vegetarian or vegan diet means opening your mind and having some new experiences, food-wise and shopping-wise. That is part of the fun. Grogan's Chinese cookbook exposed me to Chinese mock meats, and now I get to have a lot of fun shopping in Chinese markets when I go to town. Live a little! And the mock feta isn't going to taste *exactly* like feta...do you expect a vegetarian Boca burger to taste *exactly* like a Big Mac? As for the rice issue, I use Quick Brown rice, available in ANY grocery store...cooks in FIVE MINUTES! Some of you really need to expand your shopping and cooking horizons.
