This bargain of a book is a thick hardcover anthology--more than 1,000 pages long--containing stories of naturalistic and supernatural terror. First published in 1944, it has stood the test of time and become a classic in the field. Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural is rivaled only by David G. Hartwell's The Dark Descent as the essential horror anthology. Fortunately, there's little overlap: of the 52 tales in this anthology, only 5 are duplicated in The Dark Descent. Included here are such memorable stories as W.W. Jacobs's "The Monkey's Paw"; Saki's "Sredni Vashtar" and "The Open Window"; Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game"; Conrad Aiken's "Silent Snow, Secret Snow"; Arthur Machen's "The Great God Pan"; along with gems by E.F. Benson, H.G. Wells, Ambrose Bierce, Rudyard Kipling, Walter de la Mare, M.R. James, Guy de Maupassant, and O. Henry.
Book Description
When this longtime Modern Library favorite--filled with fifty-two stories of heart-stopping suspense--was first published in 1944, one of its biggest fans was critic Edmund Wilson, who in
The New Yorker applauded what he termed a sudden revival of the appetite for tales of horror. Represented in the anthology are such distinguished spell weavers as Edgar Allen Poe ("The Black Cat"), Wilkie Collins ("A Terribly Strange Bed"), Henry James ("Sir Edmund Orme"), Guy de Maupassant ("Was It a Dream?"), O. Henry ("The Furnished Room"), Rudyard Kipling ("They"), and H.G. Wells ("Pollock and the Porroh Man"). Included as well are such modern masters as Algernon Blackwood ("Ancient Sorceries"), Walter de la Mare ("Out of the Deep"), E.M. Forster ("The Celestial Omnibus"), Isak Dinesen ("The Sailor-Boys Tale"), H.P. Lovecraft ("The Dunwich Horror"), Dorothy L. Sayers ("Suspicion"), and Ernest Hemingway ("The Killers").
"There is not a story in this collection that does not have the breath of life, achieve the full suspension of disbelief that is so particularly important in [this] type of fiction," wrote the
Saturday Review. With an introduction and notes by Phyllis Cerf Wagner and Herbert Wise.
Customer Reviews:
Very happy purchasing experience. .......2007-10-10
They quickly notified me when they were shipping it and it showed up fast. The book arrived in excellent shape. I am very pleased with the level of service provided.
A great resource for 'scary story' beginners like me.......2007-09-11
There's little to add to what earlier commenters have written. But I do want to note that not only are the stories themselves awesome, but the collection as a whole serves as a broad and useful introduction to spooky stories. Many representative authors of the 'old school' are included, like Sheridan Le Fanu, M.R. James, Arthur Machen, Algernon Blackwood, Benson, and the much neglected Oliver Onions. Lovecraft is, of course, there, too. The editor couldn't have chosen better examples to inspire readers to seek out more of the represented authors' works.
Aww, how I loved this as a child........2006-07-18
I read my fathers edition, from 1944,
It is too bad they didnt reproduce the original cloth cover-a blue shaded verion of the familiar Random-House House, which was shuttered, and looked ghostly while the knarley tree next to it seemed to be reaching out, as clouds scudded across the moonlit sky.
A favorite-THE DUNWHICH HORROR.
Great compilation.......2006-06-15
I first bought this book when it was sold for $3.95. Yeah, a long time ago. I especially love the fact that it was divided into tales of terror, and then tales of the supernatural. The tales of terror were fun, but the supernatural tales were fantastic. Lovecraft, MR James, Oliver Onions, Algernon Blackwood...so many more. All of the tales were well worth reading, including the Bulwer-Lytton, but some of them were incredible. If you love good horror and terror, minus the supurflous sex and gore of modern horror, buy this book. The only other collection that even comes close to this is the old Ace paperback collection called "Macabre Reader". Both are classic horror.
Excellent Anthology!.......2006-03-25
I literally have dozens of horror anthologies, however, this is one, if not the best collection of classic horror/terror stories I have ever read.
It does contain many stories which have been included in other books of its kind, yet there are also quite a few which are rarely to be found in the more typical collection.
This book is a definite MUST for the library of every fan of the classic "scary" short story.

Book Description
Mark of the Dragon is the continuation of Robert Stanek's multilayered epic fantasy adventure begun with Keeper Martin's Tale, continued with Kingdom Alliance, and last told in Fields of Honor. In his acclaimed Keeper Martin's Tale, he introduced us to the story of Ruin Mist, an extraordinary world of magic, adventure and intrigue. Now in the eagerly awaited follow-up to Fields of Honor, he once again proves himself a wonderful storyteller with a gift for fast pacing and believable storylines. Already hailed as a classic, Robert Stanek's powerful series has been enjoyed by readers all over the world.
The Elves of the Reaches returned from exile, bringing grave news. War came to the Kingdoms. Many perished in the turmoil and unrest. An attempt was made to kidnap a princess and assassinate a king. Now, from the ancient past a dark power returns. "The Fourth Wind blows across the mountain tops," they say. And the Twelve Clans emerge from myth and memory.
As prophecy becomes reality, the factions struggle for control, only to further divide the lands. Some would say that King Andrew Alder foolishly agreed to support the Elves of the Reaches, sending men to aid their cause when the causes of all Men in all lands were being put to the test of steel. And in the North, men back their words with action.
Against a backdrop of treachery and intrigue, murder and mayhem, the price of free will is high. Many will pay with their lives. Many will succumb to imprisonment and enslavement. For when alliances shatter, old hatreds rise anew and the plotting and scheming begin.
Bold, inventive, brilliantly imagined, Mark of the Dragon is a novel of magic and wonder--a tale of pure excitement you will not soon forget.

Grand Finale!.......2007-08-20
Ruin Mist Chronicles starts off good with Keeper Martin's Tale and gets better and better. This is a must read series and one of my all time favorites. Like the other books in the series, this book takes place in a world known as Ruin Mist, an ancient world once ruled by titans and dragons. The titan and dragon masters no longer rule, but their reach still affects the lands and the other peoples of the world. I love the author's clear voice and brilliantly conceived world. A must read!
Why I Love Ruin Mist.......2006-09-15
There are plenty of reasons to love Stanek's increasingly popular Ruin Mist books. I have plenty of favorite moments, characters, and more from the four books. Here are my reasons why I love Ruin Mist...
Keeper Martin's Tale
* Adrina's first encounter with the mysterious lady, when she turns to the window and the lady disappears and then reappears. This is where readers first learn of the terrible change coming to the land.
* When Vilmos goes into the woods to collect wood for the fire and encounters a bear, he unleashes the magic he is forbidden to use setting off a chain of events that will change his life forever.
* Seth's studies of the peoples of the kingdoms, when he learns of places beyond his world and is unsure of himself. This is where readers get their first glimpse into the world of the elves. This is where readers first learn about the one who has returned.
* Adrina attempts at renewing her friendship with Emel and Emel's encounter with the lowland cat round Braddabaggon way.
* Adrina's first trip beyond Imtal, where she and Emel learn of the betrayal. Readers learn how sheltered her life has been. Stanek does a wonderful job portraying Adrina's awakening, and how closed off she has kept herself after the death of her mother.
* Xith and Vilmos entering Vangar Forest, getting chased by the shapeshifting wolmerrelle. This is the reader's first full introduction to the greater realms of the world and the dark forces at work.
* Vilmos's first lessons with Xith, where he eventually bests Xith if only for a moment.
* Adrina's bittersweet reuniun with her brother in the fallen city.
* Adrina's first encounter with the evil Erravane, the queen of the shapeshifters.
Kingdom Alliance
* Adrina meeting Rudden Klaiveson, and doing what she believes is right.
* Vilmos's arrival at the Mouth of the World, and the continuing of his apprenticeship.
* Emel's awakening to his ancient ancestry.
* Vilmos's first experience with the orbs.
* The arrival of Myrial as witness to Adrina's awakening. This moment provides more insight into Adrina's childhood and the events shaping her life.
* The competitions in the free cities. This is where readers first learn about the trios and the annual competitions.
* Vilmos's journey into the dark place, where he is forced to his the dark magic.
* The journey through Galan's past. This is where the reader first learns the full details of the elven brotherhood.
* Vilmos's experiences with Edward the troant. This is where the reader first learns of King's Mate.
* The return of the old woman, where she takes Valam's sight.
* The arrival of the Adrina's sister, when she delivers the final scroll.
* The dragon tower where two must move as one.
* The first appearance of the dragon king.
* The first competitions and the bitter choice.
Fields of Honor
* The introduction of the titan Amir and the mysterious Noman
* When Amir uses the orb to travel through shadow and later battles a shadow of himself. Stanek's at his best in scenes like these where his characters come to life through their actions.
* The introduction of the great eagles and Ayrian. This reveals more of ages past.
* Valam's first encounter with the trickster Eldrick.
* The confrontation in the sky city, and later discovery of the hidden city.
* Adrina's first meeting with a titan
* The arrival of the prince is the elven lands, and the first meeting with the queen.
* Vilmos's outburst and sudden attack.
* Brodst's meeting with the bandits and the hunter clan.
* The shattering of the alliance of men.
Mark of the Dragon
* The confrontation in the great hall. Stanek brings this together masterfully, as he has done in the past with scenes of conflict.
* The journey into the shadow and the introduction of the stone dragons.
* Adrina's strange sickness, and how she is forced to do what she doesn't want to do.
* Valam and Tsandra's awkward interactions.
* The arrival of a mysterious company.
* Emel's encounter at the Two Hands.
* The arrival of night in the day, and the coming of the one.
* The dream encounters and the forbidden tower.
* Adrina's encounter with the shadows.
* The conflict in the shadow realm and the appearnce of the fourth.
* The dragon king and his queens.
* The passage through the great door and the first encounter with the people.
I would also add that the history of the world is as fascinating as the many characters. Ruin Mist seems real place, and I was fascinated to learn how the name evolved from ancient myth to describe the intetwined realms of earth. These journeys through under earth and over earth, the kingdoms and the reaches are captivating and fascinating. I can't wait to see where the story goes next.
Read it Twice now and savored every moment........2006-08-09
I read the other three last year and picked this up right after. I've now read the series start to finish twice, and I loved it just as much the second time as the first. Out of all my reading, the Ruin Mist Chronicles remains the most captivating, wide scoped and all encompassing works I've read. Stanek's fascinating mix of fantasy and reality makes this series stand out as do the many intrigues, mysteries, and action sequences. In this final book of the series, I was amazed at how Stanek brings the dozen or so plotlines (major and minor) together, giving Mark of the Dragon a great finale. If you haven't read this series yet, you're missing out on one of the greats. This is a must buy, and should be on everyone's must read list. As a note, if you're going to start this series, get one of the deluxe editions first. The deluxe editions have expansive details on the world and the characters in the back.
Gripping Conclusion.......2006-05-14
In this final installment of what has turned out to be a truly great fantasy work, Stanek continues the captivating tale of Elves and Men and the Kingdoms they live in. The alliance is shattered. The Battle of Quashan' was only the beginning. Now the kingdom folk must pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives. This was easily the best book of this series. He continues to paint a vivid picture of an ailing kingdom and we begin to realize that something far more sinister is afoot than war. A great darkness is coming, the "eluded" at fourth wind and the one called Sathar who surived the dark journey and much more.
It seems to me almost like the earlier strugles and battles were only preludes. Perhaps a window into a world that is about to shatter into a million pieces, even if the peoples of Ruin Mist don't realize it yet.
Stanek's characters are believable. Each one is complicated and different from the others. They all have different feelings, and ambitions, and make different choices. There are many main characters, but there doesn't seem to be or need to be a single main charactre. The story is bigger than any one character.
I will be honest in saying it was hard to believe in the beginning that something less than 500 pages could be as fascinating especially after being a person who looked for the next thick thick book because thick seemd to mean great. But quantity never meant quality and if I am honest with myself I've often been one to skip ahead in the thick books to get to the action. Not so in Stanek's books. The pacing is fast and something is always happening in every chapter.
Stanek exceeded all my expectations in creating his saga. There are unexpected plot twists to make you surprised. There is intense narrative to make you hold your breath. Suspense builds and builds. Strange things happen. Wonderous events unfold. Vivid scenery comes to life. I found my mouth agape often.
The book offers some great action and battle scenes, and if these were ever filmed it would surely rival those of the Lord of the Rings especially scenes like those when Vilmos mets Edward and they play King's Mate, when Vilmos and Xith enter the Mouth of the World, when Adrina gets swept away into the dark land, when Vilmos meets the king, when Adrina captures the dragon, when Valam and Seth sparred in the trios and on and on.
It is indeed an awesome book and if you haven't read the series, you are missing out on the best fantasy series in a long time. I have rarely read a series so addictive, so incredible and so unpredictable. I have no doubt Stanek has created a worthy modern fantasy.
This is not you average fantasy.
Absolutely Stunning!.......2005-12-16
This is a great last book of a wonderful series. Robert Stanek displays talent and inventiveness in this fantasy masterpiece. This is now my favorite fantasy series. Stanek writes his characters so well that you can't help but love them, good or bad.
It is well worth it to purchase this book and all others in the series. Each is a good read that will have you craving the next. From book 1, books 2, 3, and 4 get better and better.

Customer Reviews:
This book works! Actually helps people deal with anxiety,.......2007-10-08
I now know three people who have benefited immensely from this book. Two of them because I bought it for them.
If you have panic attacks, depression, or anxiety, Dr. Borysenko offers practical exercises to help you manage.
Minding your thoughts can mend your body.......2006-08-13
MINDING THE BODY, MENDING THE MIND by Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., was recommended to me when I was trying to adjust to a new work environment. I found it tremendously informative and helpful in a number of ways.
Borysenko is the cofounder of the Mind/Body Clinic at New England Deaconess Hospital at the Harvard Medical School and has her doctorate in anatomy and cellular biology from Harvard. This book reflects her experience in the relatively new medical field of psychoneuroimmunology, which studies how the mind interacts with the body for illness and for healing.
The book is specifically about meditation and can be used as a how-to for self instruction in the practice. What I liked about it is that it provides a physiological case for the helpfulness of meditation while it teaches the reader how to use what Borysenko has pioneered in medical circles, that meditation and controlled relaxation have a positive impact on general health and, sometimes, on specific illnesses.
Borysenko explains how our bodies become conditioned to stress and respond accordingly with anxiety symptoms and that, through meditation practice, individuals can recondition themselves not to feel the physical manifestations of stress, which are so taxing to general health.
Borysenko's medical credentials are meaningful to me, and her ability to illustrate how the brain and the body are interdependent was helpful to me, as we are taught in our culture to keep the two separate and devalue our ability to impact our health through our mental reactions and proactiveness.
Even if one doesn't use the book to learn to meditate, Borysenko has a great deal to offer in terms of quality of life to her readers. The book really helps the reader to recognize harmful mental patterns and stop them, to exercise cognitive control, so that stress is diffused before the anxiety is felt in the body. She writes about "awfulizing," obsessing over something stressful, second-guessing ourselves, etc., and how to stop it through positive thought that is healing, rather than stress-making. The chapter called "Mind Traps" is especially helpful in this regard, and I find myself using her tips to diffuse tension AND improve the situation.
I strongly recommend this book, even for those who aren't interested in meditation. Borysenko provides evidence on how positive thought processes can be achieved and how they can make a difference. This book is considered a classic in the field, and it deserves the esteem that has made it so.
Simple, But Big Solutions.......2003-02-05
If you're stressed out or overwhelmed, I highly recommend this book. It gives you simple, workable solutions that make a HUGE difference.
Only criticism is that parts of it are a bit too "new age-y", but overall, it's very good.
This book makes you think!.......2003-01-13
When I first starting reading this book, I was like "thats my book, thats my life that she is writing about" I loved her writing and examples and stories that she told from other people's experiences. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in people's behaviors and everyday life.
Your thoughts should work with you, not against you!.......2002-01-20
I read this book at a very low point in my life, with depression and a variety of physical symptoms related to anxiety. This practical, straightforward book helped me gain some control of racing, negative thoughts (Borysenko calls this type of thinking "awfulizing"). Borysenko's rationale includes the fact that your body can actually help your mind to calm down. She provides simple, gentle stretching/breathing to help this happen. For me, it was most valuable to realize that even if my thoughts/intellect seemed beyond my control, my physiology is the same as all humans. Therefore, breathing/stretching has to affect my body/mind the same way as it does other humans. I kept the book on hand for bad moments, and I found that using the exercises helped me to bypass the downward spiraling thoughts and begin to get centered. She includes theory, psychology, and spirituality which supports the intellect as well. I still needed help after I found this book, but it absolutely put me on a safer, stronger path. I have loaned this book several times, to others in need. There are so many books out there, it's overwhelming. This one is worth it.

vim&vinegar.......2006-11-06
the book was well written and had all the info. i was looking for.
Grab the Vinegar Bottle.......2005-11-16
"Mom knew - vinegar is magic. It makes chocolate cakes fluffier, candy tastier, windows more sparkling, even socks whiter. This book tells all there is to know about using vinegar for better gardening, cleaning, health, and, of course, cooking." (reviewed by Carol Garriott)
Too much ammonia, not needed food recipes.......1999-10-24
I bought this book for the purpose of making home-made(safer than store-bought) cleansers. Most of her cleaning recipes call for ammonia-which is not good for your health. It talks about how to make different vinegars, which is acceptable although I don't think I would make my own. But I do not understand why she included food recipes that call for some(2-3tbs) vinegar.(Sloppy Joes, BBQ hamburger, etc) There are plenty other cookbooks for these types of recipes.
A "must have" for every household........1998-07-09
The receipe for the Kitchen Grease-Cutting Cleaner is worth the cost of this book. Whether you need to remove set-in stains in vintage clothing or clean a mildewed shower curtain, this book has lots of great ideas that really work. It even has suggestions for losing weight! Well, we'll see.
