Book Description
On a foggy July evening in 1956, the Italian cruise liner Andrea Doria, bound for New York, was struck broadside by another vessel. In eleven hours, she would sink nearly 250 feet to the murky Atlantic Ocean floor. Thanks to a daring rescue operation, only 51 of more than 1,700 people died in the tragedy. But the Andrea Doria is still taking lives.
Considered the Mt. Everest of diving, the Andrea Doria is the ultimate deepwater wreck challenge. Over the years, a small but fanatical group of extreme scuba divers have investigated the Andrea Doria, pushing themselves to the very limits of human endurance to explore her -- and not all have returned. Diver Kevin McMurray takes you inside this elite club with a hard, honest look at those who go deeper, farther, and closer to the edge than others would ever dream.
Deep Descent is the riveting true story of the human spirit overcoming human frailty and of fearsome, mortal risks traded for a hard-core adrenaline rush. Chronicling these adventures in his page-turning narrative and in dozens of dramatic photos, McMurray draws us deeper into the cold heart of the unforgiving sea, giving us a powerful vision of a place to which few will ever have the skills -- or the courage -- to go.
Customer Reviews:
Very good diver's book.......2007-08-23
Kevin McMurray produced an exciting and revealing account of the men and women who dive the Andrea Doria. Its a very good book for people just getting into the sport, because it deals with the pioneers.
Gripping and well-written but was too terse at times.......2007-08-22
This was a great book from two standpoints. As a reader, I appreciated how well-organized the book was. The chapters are not broken down chronologically but rather by weaving important ideas into a coherent story about the history of diving the Doria. McMurray knows exactly how to turn possibly hundreds of hours of interviews into a suspenseful adventure for the reader. As someone who has just started diving, it was a great way to cement some of the lessons taught by my instructors regarding panic under water, narcosis, and equipment malfunctions/hazards. This is also a great book if you want to read about some legendary divers in the 80s and 90s. McMurray paints a detailed and honest picture of the book's characters, allowing the reader to step into their shoes and understand their motivations. Thankfully, he didn't seem to baby the reader when it came to explaining the science behind the risks of diving. As a diver himself, he kept the explanations short and simple for those who are not already familiar with the concepts. The only drawback of the book is McMurray's sometimes sparse recountings. Parts of the book were very matter-of-fact as if it were taken out of a newspaper article when I wished he could provide more detail. However, these parts didn't detract from the overall good quality of the writing.
All in all, a great read for anyone interested in the Andrea Doria, deep wreck diving, or a piece of diving history.
Disappointing.......2007-07-22
I read this book after reading Shadow Divers. Technically, this book cannot even begin to compete. I would not recommend it.
Had to finish, wish it had been longer!.......2007-06-12
I just started diving this year and am reading all I can on this sport. This book was one that I had to finish.I enjoyed it from cover to cover. I know how dangerous scuba can be and this book really pounded that point home. I thought this book was well written and kept me turning the pages.I'm glad it let me know the up to date information on the where and the what, of all the people that were in the main focus of the book. I look forward to reading more of his books.
McMurray "Descent" Series.......2007-03-17
I actually purchased this book after I read McMurray's book on wreck diving the "Empress Of Ireland." I couldn't put that down - what a great book. I'm not a diver, but the reference to the "Empress of Ireland" drew me to it as Clive Cussler's "Night Probe" kicked off with her sinking. I hadn't realized the "Empress" was more deadly than the "Titanic" and, unlike the latter, the "Empress" went down in a mere 14 minutes - REAL bummer! Fascinating reading with the human and political twists that make it more than just an adventure tale; diving such as this puts an entirely different face on what some folks consider a safe sport. Highly recommended, as well as McMurray's other opus, "Dark Descent: Diving and the Deadly Allure of the Empress of Ireland."

Good story, good mystery, and action.......2006-10-11
This is a series that I will be faithful too. I like how the author doesn't put a lot of emphasize on Luanne social life and deals more with the story. The main character is great as are all of the secondary characters. I have to say reading these books makes me appreciate my A/C all the more....I can't wait to read the others and hope Ms Alam keeps putting them out.
Cave Diving? well...not really........2003-08-06
I have read this book as well as Dive Deep and Deadly by Ms Alam. I thoroughly enjoyed both books and found them to be page turners. My only complaint is the character is supposedly a cave diver, but Ms. Alam has obviously not researched the sport as her terminology is incorrect throughout the book and is quite bothersome it it's inaccuracies. Otherwise, it's a great read!
Another Winner!.......2001-12-31
I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Alam's first book, Dive Deep and Deadly, but Deep Water Death is even better! The plot of this second offering in the series is well developed and fresh and involves illegal midwifery. Once again, Ms. Alam has transported the reader deep into the bowels of the humid Florida swamps with beautiful writing and descriptions. As you read, you find yourself listening for the tell tale critter sounds and feel the closeness of the steamy air. Her main character, Luanne Fogarty, is smart, witty, competent and extremely likable, without the overbearing cockiness of some mystery heroines. I look forward to the next book in the series!
Another "Diving" reading pleasure!.......2001-12-15
Just finished "Deep Water Death" and enjoyed every page of it just as much as "Diving Deep and Deadly"! The new characters in "Deep Water Death" are just as intriguing to meet for the first time as the characters in the first of Glynn Alam's novels. And I have a hunch that we haven't seen the end of Nick Summers yet!
Quirky characters, a swamp setting, and a twisting plot.......2001-11-26
"Deep Water Death" by Glynn Marsh Alam, has all the elements that I love most about mysteries -- distinctive, quirky, interesting, and live characters; a setting (in the Florida swamps)that the reader can feel, see, hear, and smell; and a plot that keeps twisting and turning and finally resolves itself in an entirely satisfactory manner. Luanne Fogarty, Alam's protagonist, is bright, competent, and witty. Her sex scenes are some of the funniest I've ever read. Alam writes about cave diving in a sensitive and knowledgeable way that makes even us claustrophobics recognize the beauty of it. I was equally captivated by Alam's first book, and look forward to reading her next.

Death In Deep Water.......2001-02-15
Aristotle 'Soc' Socarides, part-time fisherman, part-time private detective, is hired by the owners of Oceanus marine park to investigate the death of their much disliked whale trainor. The park's owners hope to exonerate suspected killer whale, Rocky, so the sale of the park to Japanese businessmen can proceed smoothly.
Within hours of accepting the case, Soc finds himself dealing with a fanatic animal rights group, being suspected of the murder of a former Oceanus employee, and employed undercover at Oceanus.
An overall enjoyable book with the exception of the author's attempt to inject humor via the use of numerous inane comparisons. The comparisons weren't funny and detracted from the otherwise solid read.
Book Description
"...I never knew someone could write with so much understanding and compassion. Much of what she expressed mirrored so much of what I was dealing with... I am truly blessed."
- Patricia Paulson, lost her soul-mate two years ago to cancer
Have you lost someone so close that the bottom seems to have fallen out of your world? Are you tossing in a very deep and wide ocean of grief? Do you just want some comfort, company and some ways to cope with your grief?
This book of the heart shares a personal grieving story. The author shares her experience, as she and her husband grieved the loss of their young daughter. She shares openly and honestly of their experiences. She speaks to ways of coping with grief and brings some hope to what can seem like such a hopeless experience.
Her experience as both a counselor and a parent gives her writing both a personal and professional edge. The author has also experienced the losses that come with having a special needs son as well the loss of a child in the womb. Death and loss is no stranger to her.
This book describes the deep ocean of grief that may seem impossible to survive from... yet you can find healing also if you remain open to it.
"This was the most difficult thing I have ever experienced. I never dreamed I could have healed as I have. It was even more amazing to me that new life could come out of so deep a pain in amongst the void of such deep loss. For this I am ever grateful.
"It is my hope that you will find some hope, comfort and company for your ocean of grief in amongst the pages of this book and our story."

Pamela Eisley Rules.......2004-09-27
One of the best books ever published focusing on Poison Ivy (aka Pamela Eisley), one of the greatest characters in the Batman corner of the DC Universe. Ivy has never been really evil like The Joker or Mr. Zsasz, not even close, but she was at one point a villain, albeit a sympathetic one. This is one of the comics that captures her right at the period of her evolution when she was changing into something more - not a superhero: she'll never be part of The Justice League or anything, nor would she have any interest in it - but she can't be classed as just one of the 'bad guys' anymore. This book shows her passion for her causes and her compassion - for the plant kingdom, for her plant-animal hybrids, even for humanity, as we see in the first few pages with the interaction between Ivy and the young Nicarauguan girl.
Although, ironically, as she becomes less of a villain and more of a crusader herself, this puts her more and more into conflict with human society than she ever was as a 'costumed criminal' robbing Gotham's wealthy elite. She despises the corporate 'slash-and-burn' mentality and the world governments that condone it. She is particularly protective of plants, who seems to feel are sentient and communicate with her. Now, does this make her crazy? Or is she right, or is the truth somewhere in between? I don't think DC's ever definitively said, and hopefully it never will. Some questions are better left to interpretation and ponderings. But one certainly knows where she's coming from.
For double irony, as she's becoming less of a villain but more into conflict with human society as a whole, she's also becoming more of a benefactor of and champion of humanity itself. There's the aforementioned scene with the Nicarauguan girl (which I won't elaborate on to avoid any spoilers); see also her role in the year-long "Batman: No Man's Land" saga - most of which is available in the trade paperbacks here on Amazon, I believe - and her related appearances in "Detective Comics" #s 751 and 752, just for starters.
I don't mean to ignore Batman, who's depicted great in here, as he generally is, but Batman gets a chance to shine in hundreds and hundreds of issues of various titles; it's okay that here he's not even a co-star but a supporting player to Ivy. This is Ivy's spotlight all the way through, and is the story of the actions she takes after the violence-free tropical utopia she's created from dust is annihilated by some of the poorer examples of the human race.
An Incredibly Realistic Work of Fiction.......2001-02-16
If you're a comic fan, you probably love Batman. If you are a comic-art fan, you probably have heard of Brian Apthorp. But if your a fan of incredibley well written books, I bet you have never heard of this special. It came out to promote the last Batman movie, and was just a marketing gimmik. It turned out to be an extemely human comic book, though. This graphic novel shows the reason why the villianess Poisen Ivy acts upon her love for plants, and it's more simple than you think. Poisen Ivy and Batman seem very alike, and really just want to preserve life. After haveing her private island firebombed, Ivy snaps, and goes looking for who did it. Batman must find her, and finds out that Ivy doesn't want to commit crimes, she just wants to be left alone. But when people don't respect the earth, she doesn't respect people. Truley a powerful book. Recommended to everyone from the casual reader to the biggest fan. At only five dollars, it's a steal.

Dr. Scott's Knee Book: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Knee Problems Including Torn Cartilage, Ligament Damage, Arthritis, Tendinitis, Arthroscopic Surgery, and Total Knee Replacement
ASIN: 0062731432 |
Book Description
Out of the lifestyle revlutiion of the past quarter century has emerged a new kindof recreational athlete, oen more likely to pursue a physical activity that brings health benefits than to tackle a traditional "rough-and-tumble" sport. As a result, "overuse" or "chronic" injuries, such as "runner's knee" and "swimmer's shoulder", are increasingly replacing sprains, strains, and breaks as the badge of the weekend Warrior.
The sports medicine profession has responded to the rise in overuse injuries by placing greater emphasis on injury prevention, developing new diagnostic and treatment techniques, and promoting rehabilitation as an aid to full recovery. This is what Dr. Lyle J. Micheli, one of the nation's foremost sports medicine authorities, calls the "new sports medicine."
In The Sports Medicine Bible, Dr. Micheli responds to the need for more and better answers to the questions posed by recreational athletes desperate for sound medical advice that will help them return to their physical regimens as quickly as possible. He emphasizes strength and flexibility as the keys to injury prevention, encourages early motion rather than immobilization during the rehabilitation process, and recommends other proven techniques that are replacing the sports medicine techniques of past generations.
This book covers the whole spectrum of sports medicine, including special sections on nutrition, female-specific sports injuries, exercise and the elderly, structuring a workout, flexibility and strength, clothing and footwear, and proper equipment. Separate chapters examine causes and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of injuries to the foot; ankle; lower leg; knee; thigh; hip, pelvis, and groin; back; shoulder; elbow; wrist; hand and finger; head and neck; and skin.
By following the guidance and guidelines embodied in The Sports Medicine Bible, the recreational athlete can heighten his or her fitness experience, while learning the most modern techniques for effectively managing sports injuries. Written in clear, straightforward language with hundreds of illustrations, The Sports Medicine Bible is destined to become an essential piece of equipment in every athlete's gym bag.

Very Helpful.......2007-05-19
This book is a good place to start looking for help if you suffer a sports related injury. Naturally, it can't cover every conceivable problem but what it does cover is clearly written and helpful. I recommend it to my friends who get injured.

The book the sports Medicine Bible is manly about preventing, detecting, and treating Sports injuries. Most of the injuries that are listed are common. They list acute and Recurring injuries. Chapter 1-4 tells about why this book was written, and the basic Point of the book. Chapter 6-17 is about the different sections of the body. The last 3 Chapters are about miscellaneous stuff.

I bought this book for a high school junior taking sports medicine. It is well organized and contained the information she needed. As a pharmacist and a mom, I wish I had this on hand back when my kids were first in t-ball then soccer etc. It gives common sense information and approaches to very often seen injuries.
Great information.......2006-06-26
This book gave me an idea of what to look for based on some common ailments. I was well informed when I went to a medical doctor to get treatment. I wish there were more exercises that target trouble spots to help with recovery.
