Never Put Goose Grease on your Brakes.......2005-05-18
This series has now reached a new level with the marriage of Sir Charles and Kate, and now the two can solve mysteries as a team without all of the various tensions that were present before. Unfortunately the wedding took place between the last book and this one so we the readers were not invited. There are a few flashbacks to the nuptials however so we aren't completely left out.
This book starts off with a death that appears to have been of natural causes but many of the locals are not convinced that this is the case. They blame Lord Marsden's car saying that it scared the old man to death. The anti-motorcar tension in the area builds as Marsden convinces Sir Charles to hold an automobile exhibition and balloon race at Bishop's Keep, Kate's ancestral home. Many of the villagers are in a rage about the exhibition and motor cars in general and they are being urged on by Squire Roger Thornton to whom Lady Marsden (Lord Bradford Marsden's mother) wishes to marry off her youngest daughter Patsy. A fate worse than death for the high spirited and independent minded young lady.
On the day of the exhibition the tension has built up to the boiling point and there is a near riot at the Keep. Squire Thornton shows what a miserable creature he really is and Sir Charles is nearly killed in a ballooning accident caused in part by the Squire. In the balloon with Sir Charles is young Charles Rolls and on the ground to witness the launch is Mr. Henry Royce and yes these are the famous Rolls and Royce of automobile fame. The authors of this series do a wonderful job of integrating real historical characters into their stories and this book is no exception. They also do a vast amount of research in their attempt to make their novels as historically accurate as possible and one can learn quite a bit of history from these books. Not many mystery novels include a bibliography at the end, but this series, much to it's credit does just that.
There is a little of everything to be found in this book, from flying witches to impaled German race drivers and greasy brakes, and I found the whole adventure to be quite fast-paced and enjoyable. All of the people involved with the exhibition seem to hate each other so that when there is a suspicious death there are plenty of suspects. Sir Charles and Lady Kate make the perfect team and soon they have the solution, but will a jury accept their new type of scientific evidence as proof or will it be over their heads? I was disappointed a little in the ending of the book, especially as it related to the Squire. Surely he faced some consequences for his actions, but even if he didn't I would have liked to know why. I didn't get either wish though and this sort of left the story unfinished for me. What did the Squire do? You will just have to read the book and find out and despite the ending I think that you will find that this book with all of it's authentic Victorian atmosphere and it's eclectic cast to be a very enjoyable experience.
Not as good as the others in the series.......2002-05-14
I really enjoy Robin Paige and his Victorian series, but I found that this book wasn't as good as the previous ones in the series. We get a good look at ballooning and automotive enthusiasts from the late Victorian era, and that part is fun. The way Mr. Paige mixes historical with fiction is a treat. I just found that the mystery wasn't very gripping. Kate and Charles are an engaging couple. We get a good look at early forensics, and some of the problems that were encountered when trying to introduce this fledging science into a court room. But I found the ending kind of left me hanging. There was no clear resolution. Hoping for better things with the next book in the series.
Step back into the England of the 1890's.......1998-01-19
Lady Kathryn and her husband team up to solve a mysterious death during an autocar and balloon race that began on their estate. While Sir Charles experiments with the novel theory of fingerprints to help determine the culprit, Lady Kathryn uses her observations of human nature and knowledge of the local village people to help solve the crime. This is an interesting step back into a supposedly simpler time; we are even in on the meeting of Mr. Rolls and Mr. Royce, who later team up so well to market the motorcar which combined their two names. A murder in a historical setting is still a murder, and the truth is exposed cleverly by Lady Kathryn and her very scientific husband. The story is also enlivened by Sir Charles' experience as a balloonist and Lady Kathryn's wild drive in an early model of a Peugeot. And, of course, there is also a local village woman, descendant of a witch who supposedly could fly, who develops her own flying ointment which is part of the resolution to this engaging mystery.
This is one of the best historical series on the market.......1998-01-06
The advent of the motorcar in Victorian England did not easily gain acceptance, especially in the small towns where the people warily suspect dramatic change. In Dedham Vale, tempers flare between the two opposing groups when Kate and Sir Charles Sheridan agree to host an automobile exhibit and a car race combined with a hot air balloon chase. One of the locals recently died on the road when a motorcar sped by, apparently frightening him to death. The local squire leads many of the townsfolk in an attempt to stop the event.
Although the balloon lands safely in an irate farmer's plot, none of the four motorcars arrive at the landing site. One of the drivers who was in a fatal crash, says, with his last breath, that this was no accident but an act of deliberate sabotage. Kate and Charles, who met, courted, and wed during different shared investigations, seek the murdering saboteur before anyone else loses their life.
Robin Paige's Victorian mystery series is a very good, well researched novel that allows readers to glimpse a page out of history. DEATH AT DEVIL'S BRIDGE captures the atmosphere of tension and fear of the unknown due to a major technological advancement. The sense of romance blended into the fascinating who-done-it enables readers to be charmed by the married couple, who adoringly love each other even as they and the audience are challenged by a very difficult mystery. This novel, as well as the rest of the collection, will be enjoyed by anyone who loves a detailed historical mystery filled with action and intrigue.

Death at Devil's Bridge .......2006-02-09
If you want the best mystery book ever than read Death at Devil's Bridge By Cynthia Defalice. Hi I'm Stephen and I'm 10 years old. I read many mystery books in my time but this is the best one. Now I will tell all my opinions and you will like this book I'm sure What I like about this book is how Cynthia Defalice makes you think something is going to happen but it doesn't and she makes you keep wanting to read the book.
I like how in the story the author Donny [one of the characters] like the coolest guy on the Island. She also really works on the characters personality like the main character Ben Cynthia Defalice makes his personality curious and he thinks about what he's doing. I would recommend this for a person who wants an all some mystery book. And a person in fourth grade or higher. And will want to read the book. This is the best mystery book I ever read.

Cornwall, NY Sixth Grader.......2006-02-01
I am a sixth grader; I have read the book Death at Devils Bridge by Cynthia Defelice. This book is about a boy named Ben Dagget a 12 year old boy, who is a local to Martha'sVinyard. He was looking forward to a great profitable summer working on a charter fishing boat. He expected to be spending his vacation time helping and entertaining all of the tourists. But then his summer gets weird once he found the sunken Porsche. The wealthy owner of the Porsche, Maddox, was caught up with drugs and alcohol. He was selling drugs as a tourist to a man named Ray and gave him an uneven amount of drugs. Ray did not like this and decided to kill him and let his body go in the ocean. A sixteen year old boy named Donny gets involved with Ray and distributing the drugs. Donny then starts hanging out with two thirteen year olds, Jeff and Ben, so they will deliver the drugs for him. Donny took them for rides in his car in order to make Jeff and Ben like him more. Ben and Jeff get into a situation once they find out what they are delivering. I think this book was great! The things that happened were unrealistic at times because the boys were only thirteen. This book may be inappropriate for a younger reader because of the drugs and alcohol it centered around. Its lessons are very valuable and every one can learn that smoking and selling pot, would definitely be the biggest mistake of your life. Trying to avoid getting in trouble by not telling the truth is also not the right answer. So, if you want to read a book that is an experience that teaches right from wrong, read Death at Devil's Bridge.

Death at Devil's Bridge
****
I read the book Death at Devil's Bridge by Synethia D'Felice. I would give it four out of five stars. It was a great book that always left you hanging and making you want to keep reading. It takes a while for the action to start, but once it does you'll never want to stop reading it.
The book is about a boy named Ben Dagget and his best friend Jeff. They live out on an island called Martha's Vinyard. The two boys are on summer vacation and the tourists have taken over the island, like they do every year. One day Ben's summer changes when he finds a sunken Porsche at the bottom of the ocean, and it turns out that the owner of the car is missing. Ben later finds out that his role model, Donny Madison, has sunken the car. He has also stolen things from ships, and stores around the island. Ben desperately wants to be friends with him, but how far will he go to get his approval?
As the book goes on Ben and Jeff start hanging out with Donny a lot. Donny tries to get them to try beer, but the just pretend to. They have to make the right choices throughout the whole book, and I would say the theme of the book would be "making the right decisions" and also peer pressure. One day Jeff and Ben were down at Devil's Bridge flying their airplane when they spot something floating in the water. It turns out that's it's the body of Cameron Maddox, the owner of the Porsche. Ben and Jeff run to the police and tell them everything that happened. The only thing is they don't want to rat on their friend Donny about the stolen stuff and the drugs he's been selling. They don't know what to do, and have to figure out things with Donny. Will Ben and Jeff make the right decision, or will they be faced with drug dealing with Donny?
Kelly's opinion of Death at Devil's Bridge: Boring.......2002-12-05
Ben and Jeff get caught up with a life-threating drug situation. A red Porsche is found in the water and the body of Cameron Maddox was found at Devil's Bridge. Ben and Jeff start to deal drugs, get involved in the the murder, and try to stay alive.
My reaction to the story was that its plot was like the movies. You know what's going to happen, but it still surpises you. The characters seem realistic. Reaching a point of interest in this book was hard. The part that got me to read was when they found the red Porsche in the water. The story started to go downhill then back uphill. It was also too short. Cynthia DeFelice could have added a twist to the plot, and more details about places.
If somebody asked me about the book, I would say its somewhat average. I'm not a big mystery fan, but if I was, I think its average like I said earlier. Parts of the book were excellent. Some of the concepts in this book is for mature young people. I would recommend Death at Devil's Bridge to people ages 11 and up.

GREAT BOOK.......2003-04-27
We had to read this book in school and I was glad that the school finally picked a good book for us to read! The author makes it so realistic and you can't put the book down because it is so good. The author has a way of getting you interested and it keeps you guessing until the end. This is a great book for people who like to read and people who don't like to read.
Devil's Bridge.......2003-04-23
This is a good book and I had fun reading it. But there were some parts that I didn't understand, like what Mercury was. The rest of the book was really great. All the parts about all the fish got me really excited(I even asked my mom to take me fishing). I learned alot about new kinds of fish, new ways how to fish and many new different kinds of bait and lures. This is a good book for kids and grownups that are into fishing.
Devil's Bridge.......2002-11-12
This book was very interesting. I was always guessing what would happen next. I would have never guessed the ending. DeFelice, the author of the book, writes with a unique style. She finds a way to put a twist in the ending. I also liked this book because of the main character. To really understand the ending, you first have to understand the character. Ben is a character that people can relate to. Even though his problem would not happen to anybody else, a person can relate to his inner struggles. Reading this book did not take long for me. Although it was only 95 pages, I did not want to put it down. A very well put together book, you must read it.
Great realistic fiction book!.......2002-08-09
As an English teacher, I am always searching for books my kids will enjoy reading. Devil's Bridge is a winner---it's fast paced, suspenseful, has believable characters, and explores some themes that kids can relate to: dealing with a beloved parent's death, honesty, etc.
It's a quick read, too, and that alone might make it appealing to reluctant readers.

You can learn more about Ann Downer and the Spellkey Trilogy at
anndowner.com.
In my opinion one of the most well-written fantasy trilogies.......2004-05-22
Ah! This terrific fantasy trilogy is so hard to describe! I wish I could eloquently describe the wonders of these novels. Ann Downer can do it so much better! Seriously, I believe one of the main devices that make this trilogy work is her writing style. It's truly beautiful in that you really feel close to the characters and the descriptions and tone of the book ties you emotionally to them.
And the language/dialogue is SO clever!! There's like a hidden meaning (or ambiguous ones) in almost every conversation, that either gives you a slight shock or makes you think even harder than you already are (but in a good way!). Downer definitely mastered the technique of putting emotional/psychological "aspects" to written works, which proves she's not only a writer but an artist as well.
The Spellkey introduces the main characters you will grow to love: Caitlin and Badger. Caitlin, abandoned by her mother, is raised by an old hag in the "bewitched" Weirdwood. When her guardian dies, the townspeople label her a "witch" because of her seer's eyes and collar her like a dog and hang her with bells, shunning her wherever she goes. Badger is a (...) son who is sent from the monastary where he lives to make a living for himself. On his way, he runs into Caitlin...and through their journey they become touchstones to each other in ways that they could have only imagined...They enter many amazing kingdoms and live through many fascinating tales, while trying to escape an evil they know exists but cannot see. But in the end they discover that they only need each other, and that is their greatest triumph.
Would you believe that's only an informal description of the first book? There's still two more, but I would reveal too much if I went into them. So hopefully the first summary piqued you interest.
Now that I've said that...A very quick description of these books in all. In, about 12 adjectives, these novels (which constitute one story), are: non-stop exciting, clever, funny, witty, sad, happy, serious, crazy, heartwarming, heartwrenching, romantic, and...incredible!! It's a real shame this trilogy isn't that well-known at all, but oh well, most of the best ones aren't. I really think these novels can be analyzed and discussed in an English class, they're that well written. But as they're FANTASY...oh well. But you can help spread the word on this trilogy if you read it and like it, which I'm sure you will! Try you local library first. That's where I found the first book, "The Spellkey." After I found out there was a sequel ("The Glass Salamander"), I immediately checked it out. Then I found out there was another sequel ("The Books of the Keepers"), and I ended up having to request it from another library, but I was hooked! Now, I have had this Baen edition (with all three in one)for a year already because I just had to own these titles and reread all of them over and over again. Books like these really introduced me to the fantasy genre, and four of my favorite books are fantasy (counting this trilogy as one). In all honesty, I truly believe this trilogy stands among the greatest fantasy ever written.
Extra...
(...) As you can see, I am drawn to books that have a style of writing that is emotionally involving. (...) Good luck and have fun!
Dog-eared copy..........2003-07-16
I read this for the first time in sixth grade, after mistakenly getting a copy of the first one from the school library. When I realized it was a trilogy, i had to own it.. now, going of to college, my dog-eared copy is more than likely coming with me!
Read this book before you lose faith in the genre of fantasy.......1998-11-11
I had the pleasure of meeting Ann Downer in a completely un-writerly context;I read the trilogy, despite my misgivings about what's happened to fantasy novels over the last twenty years, simply because I liked her. I'm glad I did; it's a lovely piece of work, with wonderful images and clean plotting. The characters all have complex motivations and age realistically . They work as characters, rather than just respresenting Good, Evil, or Magic. The nonsensible babble which is often employed by fantasy writers as a way of saying, "Look! We're in an Other World" is absent here, thus giving a much better feel of the alienness of this world. Unlike a lot of recent fantasy works -- which have been reading more and more like Morality Plays -- this one works as a novel, not just as a genre piece. Downer is a great writer, not just a great fiction writer. People sometimes think that fantasy is just for teenagers, but this is worth the read regardless of age.

Rarely does a book come along that tackles a perennially difficult human issue with such clarity and intelligence. Harold Kushner, a Jewish rabbi facing his own child's fatal illness, deftly guides us through the inadequacies of the traditional answers to the problem of evil, then provides a uniquely practical and compassionate answer that has appealed to millions of readers across all religious creeds. Remarkable for its intensely relevant real-life examples and its fluid prose, this book cannot go unread by anyone who has ever been troubled by the question, "Why me?"
Book Description
When Harold Kushner’s three-year-old son was diagnosed with a degenerative disease and that he would only live until his early teens, he was faced with one of life’s most difficult questions: Why, God? Years later, Rabbi Kushner wrote this straightforward, elegant contemplation of the doubts and fears that arise when tragedy strikes. Kushner shares his wisdom as a rabbi, a parent, a reader, and a human being. Often imitated but never superseded,
When Bad Things Happen to Good People is a classic that offers clear thinking and consolation in times of sorrow.
Since its original publication in 1981,
When Bad Things Happen to Good People has brought solace and hope to millions of readers and its author has become a nationally known spiritual leader.

A incorrect view of God that is devoid of hope.......2007-10-06
I write this review with sensitivity to Rabbi Kushner. He has suffered the great loss of his son. His motivation for writing this book is to distill "some blessing out of Aaron's pain and tears" and perhaps to process and come to grips with how and why God `allows' such incomprehensible and unbearable grief in this life. As Rabbi Kushner says:
"I wanted to write a book that could be given to the person who has been hurt by life--by death, by illness or injury, by rejection or disappointment--and who knows in his heart that if there is justice in the world, he deserved better. What can God mean to such a person? Where can he turn for strength and hope? If you are such a person, if you want to believe in God's goodness and fairness but find it hard because of the things that have happened to you and to people you care about, and if this book helps you do that, then I will have succeeded in distilling some blessing out of Aaron's pain and tears."
Unfortunately I'm not sure this book is helpful because his answer to "the one question which really matters: why do bad things happen to good people?" is untrue. Rabbi Kushner does not believe in scripture other than as a literary and religious work. Therefore he can't find or rely on what God himself says about this question and ends up with only his own speculations.
Rabbi Kushner's God is impotent: concerned by the tragedies of our lives but unable to do anything about it. His belief system started by seeing God as "an all-wise, all-powerful parent figure who would treat us as our earthy parents did, or even better. If we were obedient and deserving, He would reward us. If we got out of line, He would discipline us, reluctantly but firmly. He would protect us from being hurt or from hurting ourselves, and would see to it that we got what we deserved in life." Suffering taught Rabbi Kushner that such an unbiblical world-view was wrong; however his impotent God world view is no less incorrect.
The major contribution of this book is to remind us that people are God's solution to much of this suffering. This is a wonderful corrective to the idea that God should work exclusively by mystical and miraculous methods.
Rabbi Kushner's "only question that matters" can't be answered, not by any secular or religious system. The biblical writers wrestled with the question but didn't offer any neat "fixes" either. The sufferings of Job, for example, were never answered with a reason but only by the character of God himself. I hope that people can find comfort in this book, that Rabbi Kushner's goal has been accomplished. I fear, however, that bad theology (that is lies and misrepresentations about God) only leads to further grief and suffering. What hope or comfort is there in a god that can do nothing in our lives? If a god created this mess and then can't fix it where do we find help?
Far better reading can be found in books by Philip Yancey, C. S. Lewis, and Dallas Willard. Scott Peck's book "A Road Less Traveled" is also helpful, not as an answer but as a guidebook. I also strongly recommend the book "Sacred Romance" by Brent Curtis and John Eldredge.
Emotionally satisfying, but..........2007-10-01
This book claims not to be about theology, but actually that is what it is about from the first word to the last. And Kushner tackles an ancient and difficult theological issue: if God is good and His creation wholly good, why is there evil in the world? Kushner never really answers this question (probably because there is no satisfactory answer to the question as it is stated). And he has the courage to say that he does not really know. In fact, the book is loaded with courageously unanswered questions. This makes the work extremely satisfying on an emotional level. But on an intellectual level, it can leave the reader deeply unsatisfied. Kushner accepts that the world is chaotic; that good people will inevitably have bad things happen to them. He exonerates God by saying God did not create this chaos. In doing so, Kushner wishes to exonerate the God of Judaism from such sins as, among others, the death of innocent children. But by letting God off, he distances the deity from the world. He creates dual realms: one for God and one for us. Kushner's God is not the God of mysticism or pantheism (and some have said, not Judaism). For all its considerable emotional strengths, it seems that Kusnher in this work wants the best of both worlds: he wants to wed the chaotic universe of the atheist, and the good God of the Bible. In the end, it's a troubled marriage.
A great book........2007-10-01
Main reason for purchasing this book was Christopher Barrios death on March 8. He was a six year old Little Angel that became an angel on that date.
His death affected me to no end. It affected my eating and sleeping habits. This book helped me to see things in perspective.
I would recommend this book to anyone trying to cope with the loss of a dear one.
The Only Explanation That Made Sense.............2007-08-20
My mother died of cancer 3 weeks ago (she was only 59) and it made me MAD as hell at God for not saving her. For a while I denied the existence of any diety. A friend recommended this book. I learned I had to change my views about the nature of God.
The traditional "pray to God, he is all powerful, and he will fix everything" belief I was taught as a child no longer applied once my mother got sick and died. Why didn't God answer my prayers? Did he want my mother to suffer, become riddled with tumors, and then die at a young age? Why didn't he help us? Harold Kushner had a similar experience (his son died at age 13) and came to the conclusion that (in a nutshell)God does not heal the sick, stop tornadoes, cure AIDS and Cancer etc. because he can't. He is not all powerful.
I never EVER would have come to this conclusion by myself because it goes against EVERYTHING I was taught as a Christian. If my mother had not died there is NO WAY I would believe God was NOT all powerful. But, in doing some soul searching, that is the only explanation that makes any sense to me. For God to make my mom sick to teach my family a lesson, for a greater good, because she was a bad person, because we did not pray enough, because it was in his divine plan etc. makes no sense to me. All of these explanations offered by my church, my friends, Priests, and fellow believers led me to one conclusion: God did not help me in my time of need and therefore, God was either evil and enjoyed watching us suffer OR there was no God. Now I believe that neither of these conclusions are true. God is simply not omnipotent.
There is no doubt that accepting that God is NOT omnipotent opens up an entirely new can of worms. I had to rethink everything I knew about God and religion. I no longer look to the Bible or to any religious text for answers. I always had my doubts about the Bible. It was written by Men, Gospels were omitted and hidden away etc. It was not written by God himself/herself. Furthermore, each religion has a "Bible" or book of laws, worship, beliefs etc. How is there any way to know which is the correct set of beliefs? In a sense, due to my skepticism about Christianity/Judaism and the Bible's authenticity, it was easier for me to accept that my view of God as an omnipotent diety was flawed. REading this book made alarm bells go off in my head - AHA! Someone else feels exactly how I feel! Someone else, a religious leader, looked around and said "What the hell is going on here?!"
I may not agree with ALL of Kushner's statements (Kushner still believes in the Bible as a holy text, and the word of God, whereas I do not) but I do believe he is onto something. I now believe is that there is a higher power, and that higher power is good. I now look to God for strength - to help me through the tough times. I do not look to him to intervene in my life because I know that, as much as he would like to, he cannot.
Thought Provoking Read. .......2007-07-26
Rabbi Kushner's writing style and brilliant ability to show contrast with real life situations creates an eagerness to read on and an insatiable need to learn more.
From the tone of this book it leads you to assume that Rabbi Kushner is just a lovable human being, rich in modesty and humility.
This is a very short book which will be of value for both religious and non religious people. Whether religious or not, Rabbi Kushner's book has the ability to put a new prayer or creed in your heart, and will also enlighten you to not lose sight of the meaning of life in your life.
People need not wait for some tragedy to come along to pick up this book. Personally, I am not currently dealing with a loss; however, after completing this book I feel more prepared to take on the burden of coping with any unfortunate occurrences, which the future may hold. I bought this book to enable me to pass on comforting words to people close to me which were going through some tough times in their life.
The majority of the readers of this book has mis-interpreted this book primarily from the misquoting of the title of the book. If you get the title wrong then this book will not serve its proper purpose to you.
If you seek a bridge to the New Testament read Melvin Tinker's "Why Do Bad Things Happen To Good People". In Tinker's "Why Do Bad Things Happen To Good People" you will find a more expanded interpretation of the Book of Job and other important passages in the New Testament that delivers what Kushner could not due to his commitment and belief in the Jewish faith. In my judgment, the two merged will give you a wider scope of learning.

the most inspirational book ever!.......2007-06-05
My brother died young and I sat around wondering why God would do this to me. A friend recommended that I read this book and I did- even though I am not much for reading books. This book is the most inspirational book I have ever read and it really has changed my life. I understand better about religion and the difference between God with us and what life has for us. Truly a must reading!

Sheer brilliance.......2003-08-18
Donald Kaul is the patron saint of liberal columnists. And even if you're not a liberal, you'll admire the craft -- the man can still write most of his peers under a table. Brilliant. Under-rated.

I gave this book to my future sister-in-law for a shower present. I love it. I have made many of the receipes.
Authentic New Orleans: Perfect Recipes from Private Cooks!.......2003-08-31
This, my most treasured cook book, was a gift from my beloved New Orleans mother-in-law in 1972, the year I began law school at Tulane. I know for a fact the Garden District and Uptown Junior Leaguers submitted these recipes from their fantastic family cooks and from the "back room" at Antoines. With these can't- fail recipes, you can prepare incomparably authentic and delicious New Orleans cuisine. I live in California now, and last night I did the Plantation Cookbook's extraordinary crayfish etouffe' with whole, frozen crayfish I found at Ikea of all places!
The best of the best for 30 years!.......2002-01-26
I can only echo the previous reviews! This cookbook was given to me as a gift 30 years ago when I was living in New Orleans. It is tattered and torn and my most cherished cookbook. Everything is wonderful. I have just ordered two copies for friends.
Best Cookbook Ever.......2001-12-09
Every single recipe in here is perfect. I have made about 95% of the dishes and if you follow the recipe exactly your dinner party will be a smash!
an excellent cookbook.......1999-12-14
This cookbook has lived in my kitchen for over 12 years and has survived several moves and a flood. It provides excellent recipes for classic New Orleans and South Louisiana cuisine. The directions are easy to follow and the variety of recipes will never leave you without choices of what to have for dinner - be it a family affair or a formal occassion. Also, you can find the ingrediants for most of the recipes regardless of where you live. I've made my favorite dishes while living in four different states. (don't miss the recipe for banana-nut bread)
This cookbook provides the foundation for more recent cookbooks that feature New Orleans style cuisine. And as previously noted, it also gives you a wonderful description of many famous Louisiana plantations and New Orleans homes.
