Book Description
If there's one thing Bureau of Indian Affairs Investigator Emmet Quanah Parker knows, it's that the dead don't always stay dead. With him he carries the ghosts of a partner killed in action, three failed marriages, and a long affair with the bottle. And now he's about to face the most dangerous case of his career--one that begins with a body that doesn't stay buried.
Brutally murdered and bizarrely mutilated, a woman's corpse is discovered on Havasupai Nation land. Parker is paired with FBI Special Agent Anna Turnipseed in a hastily assembled task force of two. The two share a mixed Native American ancestry...and little else. As they are pulled deeper into a complex case, Parker suspects they are being led--like Custer into Little Bighorn--into a killer's trap, with Anna the bait and Parker himself the quarry. At the heart of it are the dead, with history the most lethal weapon of all....

Cry Dance - Mitchell.......2007-03-23
This book arrived promptly and in like-new condition... thank you. Let's do business again!
There's a new badge in town..........2006-05-16
If you're a fan of Indian Country whodunits, Kirk Mitchell is tops. I could go on, but I'd just be repeating myself. This is a terrific read.
No Hillerman.......2005-10-18
There's a lot of suspense and it's a good plot. However, there is NO chemistry between Turnipseed and Parker. It's annoying in a movie when the actors obviously don't have chemistry, but how can the author achieve no chemistry when the author is the one creating the relationship? I found the relationship to be weak, unconvincing, and a distraction and it undercuts a lot of the motivation in the story. Mitchell could take a lesson from Margaret Coel who knows how to create chemistry. Also, to address the comparisons to Hillerman, I would say that Hillerman's plots are some of the most ingenious I have ever read - especially when, in several of them, justice is served to the satisfaction of the white and red worlds but the justice was very different in each world and the white characters actually have no clue as to what really went on and would not be satisfied if they did. I am an avid reader of mystery books, especially ones that involve Native Americans in some way, and, after reading Cry Dance, I will probably not be reading a lot more of Mitchell.
Very gripping read..........2003-03-11
I read 'Cry Dance' and the sequels, 'Spirit Sickness' and 'Ancient Ones' in one week-end, that is how un-put-down-able I consider these books. The last one kept me up well into the night.
To comment on the much debated comparisons to Tony Hillerman: I am a great fan of the Leaphorn/Chee series, but personally, I am finding I prefer Mitchell to Hillermanm at this point. I find Mitchell's books faster paced and more complex, therefore more gripping. With Hillerman, it got too easy to guess who the bad guy was. It was always (or almost always) the white one.
With regard to the relationship between Parker and Tunipseed, I think it ads a great deal to the story and in no way detracts from the plot. This level of character development is rare in these types of books, and I find it a refreshing change. It makes them real, flaws and all, as opposed to being two-dimensional cookie-cutter crimefighters. I am looking forward to seeing how their relationship evolves in the fourth book (I hope the author has plans for a fourth book in this series, if not more!).
This one will keep you up all night . . ........2002-05-02
Emmett Q. Parker, a criminal investigator for the BIA, is descended from Quanah, and Anna Turnipseed of the FBI is the great-great-granddaughter of Captain Jack of the Modoc, and even though the former is a very tough old veteran and the latter is still a rookie, you don't want to mess with either of them. Mitchell, who is well experienced at plotting blood-freezing action plots, does it again in this story of southwestern Indian casinos and Jamaican posses and psychotic killers, but he also does an excellent job of putting you inside the head of the lead characters (including the bad guys), letting you find out why they are who they are, how they relate to each other, and how they deal with being Indians in a mostly white world. And some of it is pretty horrific. But this isn't Tony Hillerman and there's not much romanticism in modern Indian life. An excellent piece of writing.

Product Description
John the Baptist: desert madman or prophet of God? John is charismatic and controversial. A rugged looking Nazarite, his hair and beard have never been cut and he wears a goat hair tunic. He speaks with authority. His dais is a rocky knoll. Annas, the dethroned Chief Priest knows a secret from John's past. How and to whom he preaches and baptizes till his death at Macchaerus, Herod's stronghold in the desert comes with many surprises.
There he was, standing on a large knoll above the river's edge. He had a head of thick black hair that had not felt a razor in years. His body was lean. The veins looked like ropes attaching the limbs together with the muscular body. Coal black eyes expressed his determination of his mission. He wore animal hides and a leather belt with well-worn sandals on his feet. Many called him a 'desert madman', others, a 'desert prophet'. His voice was sharp and there was an air of urgency about him.

Got me hooked.......2003-08-13
I started reading DL in the mid-90's, but I started by being given one of these as a gift. They're hard to find, but well worth it if you can find them. They're based on the books, but even if you've already read the chronicles trilogy, it's well worth it. Recommend these with the highest regards.
Winter Night.......2000-05-31
This book is an adeptation of the last half of Dragons of Winter Night. It is a very thick comic book that was written in 1985 after the original chronicles came out. I have only books 1,2,3, and 4 and all of them are pretty acurate in there interpretation of the original.
The book is really wonderful!.......2000-04-12
I've already read the original chronicles and I noticed some differences, but this book is still great! The illustrations are wonderfully drawn and it really gets the point across. I highly recommend this book to all!
worth reading.......2000-04-02
i havent read it yet but i have a feeling that this will be an excellent novel
I've never heard of this.......1999-08-22
I have almost 80 DL novrls and Ive never heard of thes

The real truth is sometimes hard for people to accept.......2007-09-18
I've had this book for a long time and continue to refer to it when I need to give factual advice about soy. I met Kaayla Daniel while she was writing the book. I see her as a dedicated researcher and health care professional committed to uncovering the whole truth. She certainly did her homework, and did it well. I applaud her for her diligence in digging deep for the truth.
When I read the negative reviews about The Whole Soy Story, it is a testament to the fact that the food industry in this country controls the nutrition information that is disseminated to the masses, and people believe it! It is very unfortunate that the public is educated in nutrition by the people whose only interest is in making a profit, not producing healthy foods.
As a health care professional, I have seen many patients addicted to soy, suffering from so many maladies, and not wanting to give up this so-called "health food." When, in fact, they do finally stop eating soy, I have seen patients with complaints of pain, emotional distress and hormonal fluctuations turn around in days. They are always amazed that soy was the cause of their problems.
I myself, at one time, was a vegetarian and tofu was my main source of protein. I also ate veggie burgers and soy milk and a few other soy products occasionally. Four months after starting my soy diet, I went into menopause, at age 41. Also in the course of my soy consumption, my white blood count went so low, I was always fighting to stay well. When I ate those delicious veggie burgers, I felt like my tongue was disconnected from my brain. When I tried to speak, my speech was garbled. I had to work really hard to speak slowly and deliberately so I could be understood. Unfortunately, I continued to eat this way for 5 years. Now after a number of years of avoiding soy products, my white blood count is back to normal and I can speak normally, without the neurotoxic effect of the soy.
There are so many people in this country taking multiple drugs for a variety of medical conditions. If they would just stop and pay attention to what they put in their bodies, and eat really healthy food, they would find that they would have less need for the drugs and they would feel a whole lot better.
Soy not so good.......2007-07-17
Thank you for writing this book. I have always had concerns over too much soy in the diet.
Toxic and Offensive.......2007-06-20
This book is eye opening. The products containing soy are omni-present! You can not avoid this weed. It's like a monster that will never die. If you are a young couple hoping to have children . . . don't eat soy! If you are in prison for a violent crime . . . you should thank soy for adding an abundance of manganese to your system and creating the toxic personality that you have become.
Offensive is a mild word for what the effects of soy can produce.
Well done Ms. Kaayla T. Daniel . . . even though the information becomes very technical at times, your point is well taken and recieved by this reader.
Soy warning.......2007-06-08
I have a lot of friends who rely on Soy for the health benefits that have been ascribed to it. However, I have now passed this book to them, because of the estrogen-like properties to those concerned about breast cancer, and for giving to their children. You can't always believe what the food manufacturers say about their products, and it's not until problems start showing up on a large scale that the general public starts to "get wise". Stick to the fermented products, because they do help diminish the amount of toxins in the soy, if you think you must have soy.
The most important health book on the market today.......2007-05-01
I have read Dr. Daniel's book three times and recommend it to anyone who is interested in staying healthy for the long term. I am a health book writer. In a few of the books I've coauthored tofu was recommended as a substitute for animal protein. A few years ago, however, I began hearing that eating soy might not be as healthy as the FDA claims led us to believe. This caught my attention as I lived in Japan for 2 ½ years in the late 1960s and the soy enthusiasm that hinged on the claim that soy is a mainstay of the Asian diet did not ring true to me. Having eaten hundreds of meals in Japanese restaurants I did not recall soy being on the menu as a main course, but rather that Japanese ate tiny pieces of soy as condiments.
As an advocate of historically eaten real food, it makes sense that naturally fermented soy foods like shoyu and miso can be part of a healthy diet in the very small amounts they have been traditionally consumed. However, processed soy products like soymilk, soy infant formula, soy protein bars and hotdogs have not been historically eaten as these substances cannot be picked, gathered, hunted, milked or fished. And soy "products" are the foods that the soy industry, the FDA and the medical community are touting a healthy. But what about tofu as a substitute for animal protein?
In THE WHOLE SOY STORY Dr. Daniel also details the many naturally occurring problems inherent in the soybean such as allergens, phytoestrogens, anti-nutrients, toxins, and the proven negative effects of these properties on the human body. And so now I understand that even foods like tofu that are not highly processed still harbor many of these toxic properties.
One of the issues that jumped out at me is that soy phytoestrogens are thyroid dampening. The rampant rise of hypothyroidism in America coincides with our rise of obesity. Could the consumption of soy have something to do with this problem? Hypothyroidism is a life altering condition that--among numerous other symptoms--condemns a person to a lifelong battle with weight. If there is any evidence at all that soy might be contributing to this problem, why risk it? We have an abundant food supply and do not need soy. (Rather, the soy industry needs us!)
I will leave the rest of the explaining to Dr. Daniel in her thoroughly researched, well-organized, well-written book THE WHOLE SOY STORY. Because soy permeates our food supply this is the most important health book on the market today. I will end by saying that I no longer recommend tofu as an alternative to animal protein.
Book Description
The Party Girls' number-one rule is "have fun - especially if you're the hostess!" With that in mind, two party experts have created a cookbook and party planner that makes everything quick, easy, inexpensive, and most of all, fun. No deep-frying at the last minute or stuffing miniature mushrooms for hours on end. The 24 themed ftes in this book each includes ideas for invitations, party favors, decorations, music, games, costumes, and tons of food and drink.
As a step-by-step guide or a personal manifesto for living large, The Party Girl Cookbook is certain to entertain and enlighten with its humor, energy, and originality.
Customer Reviews:
The rave reviewers must not have actually tried any of the recipes from this book........2007-08-17
I made two dishes from tPGCB last weekend for my niece's birthday party, and both recipes were messed up. The moussaka instruction had several flaws (it only gave instructions for what to do with half of the lamb mixture, and the bechamel sauce called for WAY too much milk) and the hummus recipe called for "two cloves, minced". Fortunately, I am a reasonably experienced cook and could figure out on my own how to put a casserole together, and I also knew that "two cloves, minced" meant two cloves of GARLIC. However, this is a book marketed to non-cooks, and therein lies the problem with mistakes such as these. My sister, for instance, would have called me in tears hollering "What do I do???" had she attempted the moussaka recipe on her own. (I shudder to think of what would have become of the hummus in her hands.)
This book is a great idea in theory, but the Party Girls should really lay off the booze a bit AND hire a different editor for their next book.
The Party Girl Cookbook.......2005-01-07
I own many cookbooks designed to facilitate easy entertaining and this book is one of the worst I have ever purchased. There is no guidance as to what can be made ahead or frozen. It is written in paragraph form and difficult to follow. There are no pictures just a lot of writing. If you are looking for "cute" party themes then this is the book for you, but if you want to simply plan and hostess a party with tasty recipes then there are many other cookbooks that will provide more useful information.
I felt the same way about the Last Minute Party Girl. It was sold as a two book set and there was nothing "last minute" about the recipes.
great book!.......2002-07-13
tons of awesome, easy recipies and party ideas- not only your average christmas and 4th of july parties, but goddesses day, superwoman day, bastille day... tons of information, tips and ideas for having an excellent party. highly recomended.
Fun and Helpful Party Tips!.......2000-08-24
Having thrown a few parties in my time, I know the frustrations and annoyances that most "party" cookbooks serve up to the ambitious host/ess. Hours of prep, cooking and clean up for a few minutes of fun. Not with the party girls! Their easy recipes and fun, imaginative themes make you WANT to throw a party. And since there are two themes per month (and some are pretty ...unique) you have no excuse not to. I have made about a dozen of the recipes and have found them as easy and tasty as advertised. I know I sound like a commercial for this book, but I really have enjoyed it. I highly recommend it.
The Party Girl Cookbook.......2000-07-23
I've ready hundreds of books on entertaining and believe I have finally found my kindred spirits. Known as a "party girl" myself, I am frequently planning something between home and work. This book has given me many great ideas that I can't wait to mold into my own party repertoire. If you are looking for a book to plan your next soiree, this is the book for you. Kudos to Lara and Nina! I can't wait until they write another.
