Seriously over-hyped.......2006-09-10
Once you find a copy of "Crooked Tree" (if you can find a copy), you'll get a chance to sort the chaff from the wheat for yourself regarding some of the glowing comments about this book from previous reviewers. For this reviewer's two cents however, the novel is only passable horror, at best. The scenes containing the bear attacks ARE intense, but are cetainly not some of the scariest scenes in print as some of the earlier reviewers would have you believe.
The plot revolves around a sudden rash of black bear attacks in and around the Crooked Tree State Park in upper Michigan. As local residents, including the descendants of the Ottawa tribe, try to make some sense of why the attacks are taking place, they start to see a pattern. Could that pattern include the possibility of the return of an ancient Indian curse? Or have the bears simply become hostile?
The book is very slow-moving in spots and I sometimes found myself wishing the action along - either to the point of skim reading. The characters are a little too wooden for this reviewer's liking and are not clearly established.
If you are a fan of the books of Owl Goingback, you might want to consider searching for a copy of "Crooked Tree". (Goingback's works are far superior to this, by the way.) If you are just a general horror fan, then this reviewer's advice would be to simply avoid this book and spend your money and time on something else.
ANCIENT INDIAN DEMON BEAR RUNS AMOK!!!.......2004-11-02
I READ THIS BOOK BACK IN THE EARY 80'S AND I AGREE WITH THE PREVIOUS REVIEW,IT IS EXCELLENT!!!. THE SCENE WHERE A WOMAN IS VISCIOUSLY ATTACKED IN HER CAR WAS SO BRUTAL AND REALISTICALLY TERRIFYING I CLOSED THE BOOK AND DIDN'T PICK IT BACK UP FOR A WEEK, PLEASE GIVE THIS AUTHOR A TRY, HE'S AN EASY READ AND KNOWS INSTINCTIVELY HOW TO SCARE THE HELL OUT OF THE READER. AFTER FINISHING THIS BOOK TRY "COLD FIRE" AND "SECOND FIRE" HIS OTHER TWO NOVELS, THEY ARE OUTSTANDING EXAMPLES OF GREAT STORYTELLING. TRY "WHERE THE CHILL WAITS" BY T.CHRIS MARTINDALE QUITE POSSIBLY THE SCARIEST OUTDOOR HORROR STORY EVER WRITTEN "CROOKED TREE" RUNS A CLOSE SECOND.
Smokey the Bear will eat you .......2004-10-05
I got this gem of a horror tale on a whim at a local used bookstore. Grabbed by the nutso cover art I sat down to read an amazingly effective tale of Indian legends and supernatural terror brought vividly to life by Robert Charles Wilson. This gory thriller doesn't pull any punches and it has an insane vibe with some serious cult potential. With instances of terror and trauma that are just shy of brilliant this book deserves a reprint. I found myself actually flinching at details and cringing at circumstances and to make me do that is no small feat. This is one of those books that makes me wish I was a film producer, it's startling imagery and well drawn characters just scream MOVIE! Most people just don't understand how much damage a bear can do to a human body but Mr. Wilson sure does.
If you can find this book read it, it's worth seeking out. Especially if you live near bear country.
Thriller, not by the sci-fiction writer.......2004-03-11
This book is NOT by Robert Charles Wilson, the highly regarded science fiction writer. It is by Robert C. Wilson, a different writer altogether. That said, the book is a well constructed horror story that is likely to appeal to fans of Stephen King and his genre.
-the legend of "the bearwalk"-.......2002-03-21
Something very strange is going on in Crooked Tree State Forest in the state of Michigan. Several people are savagely attacked and killed by black bears. The Ottawa Indians suspect that an ancient legend has come to pass where the spirit of Shawonabe, an evil man has taken over the mind and body of a living person and is inciting the bears to murder. Shawonabe called "the evil one from the south," is buried somewhere in Crooked Tree State Forest, and the legend is referred to as "the bearwalk."...
This is a story that kept me reading late into the night. I also learned that pound for pound, the black bear is the strongest animal alive.
I ...would love to see this story made into a movie!

Book Description
1929. Meigs, who wrote stories that young people still enjoy decades after she wrote them, is also the winner of the Newbery Medal for her book, Invincible Louisa, the story of the author of Little Women. The book begins: A covey of quail had settled down upon the ridge of high grazing land above Apple Creek. They were busy among the tall weeds and dry leaves, scurrying here and there, scratching in the dry grass and talking to each other in their small voices. Anthony Whipple, who had come hastily up the slope from the direction of the town, saw the quick, shy birds in time, and stopped suddenly in a brush-filled corner of the fence to watch them go about their business, unconscious and undisturbed. He had been playing football, and had thought that he was late in keeping his promise to meet his sister Jane here in Apple Creek pasture; so that he had come hastily and breathlessly up the twisting cow path. Unless Peter Parker decides to pen his own autobiography someday, you're not going to find a better guide than this to the life and times of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. From that fateful radioactive bite in the science hall up to Spidey 2099, DK's Ultimate Guide recounts all the career milestones--major and minor--of Stan Lee's web-slinging wall-crawler. Organized and authored by Tom DeFalco, former Marvel editor in chief and the series' bestselling author, this guide pulls together the storyline's many twists and turns (chronologically, by decade) and devotes big spreads to nearly every noteworthy ally, friend, and villain (with one curious omission in the Shocker). Special sections cover episodes like the alien costume, the regrettable clone saga, and the wedding to Mary Jane, while panel after panel of original art (over 600 images in all) flesh out the action (a particular treat with the corny old dialogue and art).
DeFalco makes some small missteps--inevitable in any fan-boy project--and certainly The Ultimate Guide will feel dated as the series evolves, but as a comprehensive guide, it just doesn't get any better. Throw in a foreword by the inimitable Stan Lee, and you've got a book that would make even Peter Parker proud. --Paul Hughes

Great reference book!.......2006-02-25
"Spider-Man: The Ultimate Guide" is a must-have book for all the wall-crawler's fan! It has information about lots of characters and a fantastic spidey's time-line! The illustrations are as good as well, and you can even find information on alternative Spider-Man series, like Spider-Girl, and Spidey 2099. Although the book is very nicely done i still missed more detailed profiles, anyway you will sure not regret for buying this one!
Spider-Man: The Ultimate Guide.......2005-06-22
Tom De Falco's comprehensive SPIDER-MAN guide is one of my favourite spidey books, covering everything from the comic's origins in the 60s to the recent movies. With some great insight into the characters in the world of comics and good layout, this guide tells you all you need to know about Peter Parker, Mary Jane and assotment of villians (Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Venom et all). DeFalco's extensive research has paid off, making this an essential addition to the already bookshelf-breaking collection of comic book guides. This is a must-have book for any SPIDER-MAN enthusiast.
Review From a Future Critic.......2005-06-10
I never read a Spider-man comic book, but I wanted to know all about Spidey, his allies, and his enemies. This ended my search!
A great resource for any fan of Spidey.......2004-12-16
I have been a rabid Spider-Man fan, reader, and collector for the past 13 years. In that time, I've seen some of the best (1980's to 1993) and worst (Clone Saga) this hero has to offer. IN addition, I have collected every issue ever published. So, I'm very knowledgable about SPider-Man and his world. Still, this book is a delight to read. I didn't learn anything new, but it is well written, spectacularly illustrated with original comic art from some of Spidey's most legendary artists (Ditko, Romita Sr., Romita Jr., Frenz, Andru, Sal Buscema, Gil Kane, McFarlane, Bagley, Larsen). New fans will learn a lot from this book, but no matter how long you've been a fan of Spidey, this book is a treasure trove for you!!
My kids love it!.......2004-07-22
We bought this book for our five year old who loves Spiderman, but our whole family has enjoyed learning more about the villains and other characters in Spidey's world. It is fun to learn the origin of characters we are familiar with and some we had never heard of before. There are lots and lots of illustrations to keep the kids' attention, and the stories and bios are interesting enough for adults as well. The binding has fallen apart on our book- which may have survived better under normal wear and tear- but that is mostly because my son takes it to bed with him since he loves this book so much. Overall, a great book for kids and adults too.

Customer Reviews:
BECOME SPIDER-MAN...SORT OF..........2007-05-11
The Spider-Man handbook won't give you super powers or make you a hero, but it is a fun, quirky read (appropriate since it is from Quirk Books) that does have several bits of practical information for the hero wannabe. The book is part fantasy, part survival guide, and part Spider-Man mythology, all rolled into one. Having read Quirk's Superman handbook, the Spider-Man handbook seems quite a bit more on the fantastic side.
The first chapter covers your Spider-Man basics such as how to crawl up a wall (quite possible for the experienced rock climber but don't try that at home!), how to design and make a costume, building a web shooter (ohhhh kay), developing your Spider sense, and maintaining a secret identity. Now I don't truly suppose that anyone is going to be making their own web-shooters and go out swinging from buildings, but there are some inventive notions here, still. Such as when you wear your costume underneath your regular clothes, make sure the sleeves of your costume are a couple of inches shorter so they don't stick out and give you away. And yes, you can develop your spider sense, or more accurately, heighten your other senses with some useful techniques such as sitting on a park bench, closing your eyes, and listening to all of the sounds you hear and then try to identify them.
The Spidey Skills section is really the most fantastic of all as you'll be instructed how to survive a pumpkin-bomb attack, build and fly a web glider, defeat a shape-changing foe, and stopping a getaway car. I did find the section on surviving a fall from a tall building rather interesting as there are several examples of people falling from great heights and surviving. Still, no matter how you try and land, you fall from 500' and you're going to be road kill!
Sections three and four deal with combat and law enforcement skills that are less outrageous than the previous two sections. There are some dubious ideas about how to take on a gang of henchmen but also some sensible advice on following a criminal (or the guy making time with your girlfriend!) without being detected and also for losing a tail. The most useful, real-life advice comes in the final chapter and includes one that a lot of people can relate to...how to live on a meager income!
In addition to all of this great info, you'll meet some of Spidey's top villains such as Doctor Octopus, The Sandman, and Venom, learn about the women in his life, and all of his powers and equipment, including the long-lost Spider-Man dune buggy. The Spider-Man handbook isn't to be taken too serious, hopefully. Leave the superheroes to the comics and the movies. The book is pure entertainment, mixed with a few solid bits of common sense for the right occasion. Hopefully the right occasion is not an attack by the Green Goblin. Great book for the Spider-Man fan! Stan Lee provides the Foreword.
Another entertaining manual on superhero skills.......2007-01-02
While the DC heroes Superman and Batman received the respective training manuals, Spider-Man now has his. Written in the same "Worst-Cast Scenario" as the other two, it captures the spirit and humor of training to be Spider-Man.
It does have the same dis-claimer like the others (who wants to be sued for someone who doesn't know comics are fiction), it does also offer real-world adivce. Living on a meager budget is something that both Spider-Man and civilians have to often do.
While it may be somewhat repetitious, it is an excellent book to add to your comic book shelf.

where is the fifth johnny storm race???.......2007-03-31
I bought this book hoping that it would help me find the hidden items that I just could not seem to find on my own and it did just that However when it started walking me through the races I discovered a problem. THIS BOOK IS INCOMPLETE!!!! All I needed was to beat Johnny Storm in the race around Manhattan and wouldn't you know it As far as this book is concerned that paticular race dosen't seem to exist. So if you are looking for 100% game completion don't bother with this book. However if all you want is the cheats and the location of all the bonus tokens by all means by this book.

Well done introduction.......2005-08-03
This book is a nice summary of the subject covering the technical background of high blood pressure as well as treatments-including diet and exercise and drug therapy. Although most of us have primary hypertension-caused by hereditary factors, some have secondary hypertension, ie as a symptom of underlying conditions. The book does name the two most common ones: renal artery stenosis (RAS), about 1/100 odds and pheochromocytoma, about 1/1000 odds. Those taking more than three meds to control high blood pressure should be evaluated for these conditions (though some say the odds are so low, the tests are not worth the cost).
Most useful is the obesity table and the relationship that to lose wt, your daily calorie intake should be no more than 10 times your weight in pounds or 22 times your weight in kilograms.
The book includes a well written overview of drug classes and how they are commonly used, which combinations are preferred. Nearly every commercial medication offered has clinical data showing that it saves lives under some circumstances. Those studies tend to encourage combinations of drugs-even more than does avoidance of unacceptable side effects. The drugs list seems current and up to date. But one should not rely on their brief summaries of side effects. Read your package inserts and research them on line to learn what side effects are potentially a problem with the drugs prescribed for you.
The book includes a few recipes and menus, but we seem to get into the same classical paradox. So much is written about healthy diet that its tough to weave a menu that truly sticks to the straight and narrow. We have the usual rabbit food-salads and veggies, served without salt or fat containing sauces blended with minor amounts of fish and chicken. They clearly do not believe in the low carb diet. And heavy fish eaters might want to worry about mercury.
Serious healthy eaters will want a more complete heart healthy cookbook, of which there are several.
This book is a nice introduction to the subject. It should help most patients who want to communicate better with their doctors and especially understand what it is they are trying to tell you. Index. List of resources and their web addresses.
great book for the average person with high blood pressure.......2001-08-28
As an RN I have referred many patients to this as well as other books published by the Mayo Clinic. The material is well written, understandable and offers valuable infomation on many topics surrounding high blood pressure, diet, medications, exercise, as well as alternative therapies.
Wonderful Information.......2001-03-19
I stopped smoking 8 months ago, and once I stopped I gained over 20lbs. I went to the doctor for several checks ups in a 2 month period, each time my pressure was taken. Each time it was a little high. I was diagnoised with Hypertension a mild case. In my book any case is enough....I was scared.
I wrote to my email book group (RAWSistaz) and one of the members sent me this book. I read this book in 2 hours. The book is 172 pages chock full o information.
Each Chapter has bold lettering for clarity. The subtopics listed within the Chapters are easy to locate if your just browsing.
This book is for someone who has the disease and for those wanting to know if they are at risk. The Mayo clinic gives tips and suggestions that you can use each day to help you manage your blood pressure.
Also included in this wonderful book is the following: Daily menus, 6 step fitness plan, Better way to shop and cook, plus much much more. One of the best things about this book aside from the information you don't need a PHD to understand it nor do you need to know medical jargon.
Along with Slim Down Sister, both these books will help me to live healthier, happier and longer.

Hot for your Hibachi, warming up for the Weber? Grilling for Dummies is the perfect guide for the home grillmaster. It doesn't matter if you can't tell a briquette from a Rockette or if you just won your third Michelin star cooking on your grill, this book is one of the best guides available. Like all books in the popular Dummies series, Grilling for Dummies is clear, concise, and thorough. Part reference, part cookbook, and part cooking class, no coal is left unturned. The book covers the gamut with 130 recipes, including everything from the basic burger to wild game to fruit (yes, grilled fruit, and it's not bad). There is an excellent section on vegetables and vegetarian fare, and many ideas and recipes are given for low-fat grilling. Different techniques are presented in depth, including barbecue, smoking, marinades, and rubs. Authors Marie Rama and John Mariani cover every step in the grilling process, from lighting the fire to setting the table. Especially good are the technical sections that address ingredients and prep work, covering subjects as diverse as working with chilies or butterflying lamb chops. Rama and Mariani also win the food diplomat's award for deftly avoiding the regional squabbles that define the barbecue world. Lexington, Kansas City, Texas, Ohio, and other styles are touched on without playing favorites. Read the section on ribs, prepare them all, and draw your own battle lines. Unusual for the Dummies series, but welcome, is the section of full-color photographs illustrating what your food should and can look like with a little effort. This is a solid book for anybody interested in becoming a better backyard chef. --Mark O. Howerton

Customer Reviews:
some good recipes, but nothng more.......2007-06-02
I wish I had a chance to browse this book before I bought it. I was also hoping for some guidance on how long to cook various cuts of meat and so on. While there is a little of that, it's scattered among various recipes and not very useable. Should really be called "Grilling Recipes for Dummies".
First time Griller.......2006-06-02
I just recieved this book, it is great. I am a first time griller and this took me step by step thru everything.
Not for Dummies.......2006-05-16
This is a Grilling Cookbook. Not a book about grilling for dummies. I had never grilled before and this book goes off about sauces and marinades, when I just wanted to start by putting a slab of meat or a hot dog on the grill.
Needless to say, I was lost and confused before I got the gas connected (which it doesn't help you with, either BTW).
It was totally useless for me.
Great book for entertaining!.......2004-08-16
I bought this book after reading "Cooking for Dummies" as a second level course in cooking. Since nobody has died after eating my barbecue, I'd say the experiment was a success. From equipment to recipes, this book has something for everyone who wants to experience the adventure of The Grill.
Grillicious.......1999-12-05
This book will turn a novice griiler (like me) into a pro (also like me). The recipes included with this title are worth the price. The glossary is very useful as are the tips. You'll laugh, you'll cry (see: Onions). Great book. Good day.
