If experiencing the taste of a man's life seems implausible, then you need to cook from Cooking with Patrick Clark, a cookbook generated by Charlie Trotter as a way of giving honor to the memory of one of America's great chefs. Patrick Clark died at age 42, waiting for a heart transplant. He left behind a wife and five children. Proceeds from this book go to an education fund for the Clark children. Like an underlying drumbeat, the comments of more than 50 of the chefs who knew and worked with Patrick Clark and who contributed recipes to this book continually come back to Clark's humanity, his warmth, his dedication to his art, his dedication to his family, and his ability to inspire the best in everybody.
Clark always meant to write a cookbook, but with career and family and the considerable amount of time he put into charity food events, he never got around to it. Cooking with Patrick Clark, then, is as close as we will ever come. This is classy food, challenging food. Clark was a highly skilled and trained chef who raised the bar on American cooking.
Try the Crab, Artichoke, and Potato Salad to discover Clark's delight in the mystery of how disparate ingredients can come together in a peculiarly American style. You'll find Roasted Salmon with Moroccan Barbecue Sauce, or Black Sea Bass with Israeli Couscous. Clark can get as elegant as Rabbit Loin with Leeks and Wild Mushrooms, and as down-home as barbecued Ribs with Spicy Coleslaw and Buttermilk-Chile Corn Muffins. The single note that rings true and clear through all of his recipes is passion. Then there are the contributions of the many invited chefs, who add their memories of and feelings about Patrick Clark. Nancy Silverton's addition is a Strawberry-Rhubarb Cobbler with Brown Butter Biscuits. She may sum up everyone's feelings best when she says, "I chose this dessert because it's just like Patrick--warm and comforting."
A special note of gratitude must be made to Charlie Trotter. This book might not have made it to print were it not for his drive and determination to see a fitting memorial for his friend and colleague. --Schuyler Ingle

Customer Reviews:
Not what I had expected!.......2004-04-14
Seeing Patrick Clark's recipes come to life in bold color was astonishing to say the least. I was truly in awe of his depth of cooking.I've never met him personally but I felt his warmth through the kind and admirable words spoken by his family and friends.
The downfall was that I was expecting a little more input from his colleagues and friends. For someone of the calibre of Patrick Clark I would have expected more than one and two liners from the contributors. Many commented on his warm smile and committment to his family. That is wonderful, but I wanted to hear more about his professional life. What did they think about his cooking? Also the idea from what I gathered was that each contributor would add a recipe of his or her own in rememberance of Patrick Clark. Emeril and Nancy Silverton actually dedicated or made mention of Patrick with their respective recipe. The other contriutors just through in a recipe without any connection to Patrick Clark. What significance did their recipes have in regard to the professional life of Patrick Clark?
I was even expecting more from his family. This book was a real let down. Charlie Trotter did an honorable job, but all in all the book seemed to be nothing more than an advertising tool for many of the contributors.
I am Drooling Thinking About it. . ........2002-04-29
When I need inspiration and cannot figure out what to make for a meal, I turn to this book. I was never able to eat any of Patrick Clark's food, however, I can only imagine if I can take his recipes and turn them into something wonderful, what he would have done with them. I make his ribs at least once a month, when I am asked for the recipe, I point to the book. While I could give them the recipe, I want more people to buy this book. I have made many of Patrick's recipes, and have not found a single entry that was sublime. God Bless you Patrick.
A wonderful book that is more than "just" a cookbook.......2001-01-12
Patrick Clark was a hero of sorts to me, an idol if you will. I would watch his occasional guest spots on the food network with pen in hand to write down the show numbers so I could download the recipes he made. He seemd to me, through the looking glass that is the television, to be a warm man that loved his work and his world. This cookbook, more a tribute and rememberance than just a cookbook, brings out the story of the man. Half the recipes are his and the other half are recipes shared by other great chefs in his honor, along with their fond recolections of Patrick Clark the chef, the husband, the father and the man. I have made several of the recipes in this book and they are wonderful, as you would expect them to be. They are easy to follow, in most casses, and the results of my bit of cooking were enjoyable. The book is also a worthy read while sitting on the sofa and warming by the fire.
It is reassuring to know that the personality that came across on the Television is so close to the real man. His passing left the culinary world short one shining star. I am sorry I never got a chance to taste his cooking first hand. With this cookbook I am able, at least in a secondhand way, to taste the work of the man.
As good as a cookbook can get!.......2000-11-29
Where else can one get a cookbook which has so many recipes from the world's greatest chefs and at the same time contribute to such a worthy cause? This is such a neat concept! I've made several of these recipes for entertaining. Patrick's recipes have sophistication and comfort all rolled up in one. Diners at my table have raved about the food prepared from his recipes.
This is a keeper! Buy one for yourself and give many to all those who love food and cooks!
GASTRONOMIC 'DREAM TEAM'.......1999-03-31
Thank you Chef Charlie for putting together this delightful array of WORLD RENOWNED CHEFS and for including REGIONAL CHEFS, such as Mark Filippo from Cafe Meze in Westchester, NY. The late Chef Patrick would be proud of this MOUTH WATERING MEMORIAL. I see several chefs are not waiting for the weekending April 25 DINNER CELEBRATION to release their delicious contributions. They have already added them to thier present menu. These UNIQUE CULINARY DELIGHTS can not only be used over and over and, but also passed from generation to generation. THIS VOLUME IS A MUST FOR COLLECTORS. If you've said or heard the phase "I'll be home late, Honey" too often, here's a recipe for moving ahead faster then a cake rises. PLAN AHEAD - pop one of these GREAT CHEF'S recipes in the oven and read the "2000 Percent Solution" by Mitchell, Coles and Metz. You'll spend more time with Chef Charlie and these GUEST CHEFS when you learn to avoid TIME-WASTING STALLS that keep you from reaching your full career potential.

Customer Reviews:
gives some overwiev but is not for the serious student.......2006-06-17
This book may give some overwiev of the history of hats but it is not to be recomended for serious studies of costume history.
The illustrations are drawn after works of art and other sources. In the cases where I'm quite certain which work of art it is drawn from I must say that the drawings are often more or less inaccurate. As for the text, I'm from Scandinavia and familliar with the custom "Lucia" on the 13th of december. Reading Amphletts explanation accompanying the illustration of a Lucia crown from Norway I'm amased as it's total nonsense! Belive me, fertility rituals and witches was not the explanation given when i read cultural history at university! [It is a mix of seweral older customs among them serwing an extra breakfast as this was belived to bee the longest and darkest night of the year, and youngsters dressing up and going around singing and begging for food contributions to either their studies or a party. One of the dress up costumes being the christ child with a halo of candlelight around the head. Nowadays (and since about a 100 years ago) the lucia crown on a girl or woman serving ginger snaps and saffron bread together with coffee as she and her followers sings!} If the rest of the text has some more faults as big as this i don't know but it certainly makes me very suspicuios.
Hats in History.......2005-12-12
This is a rather scholarly work on the history of hats covering the past two thousand years. The arrangement is chronological, by century. If one's interest is identifying or organizing headdress by country of origin, this book is particularly useful as the illustrations include the country where the hat was worn along with the drawing. I am always impressed when the same author does a book's text and illustrations, as is the case with this work (see Sibley's bird book if you really want to be blown away).
Headwear history.......2004-10-11
This book has alot of printed information in it. A great deal of history. If you are looking for a book to teach you how to make head wear and hats then this isn't the book you need. However for a historical aspect I reccomend it, as long as you can visualise the written word. Its an ok book, not great but not the worst either. I bought it expecting it to contain more practical information, so from that point of view I was disapointed.

Customer Reviews:
A Must Have.......2007-02-12
Excellent knowledge base for the DIY and pro. This series of books will show you everything you need to know to do it right the first time and pass those crucial inspections.
Buyer Beware.......2003-04-23
When it was difficult to get to the library to view the Uniform Plumbing Code, I used this at home to study for an exam. I was rudely surprised when I got to the libary, compared the references to the code, and found that this guide was riddled with errors. It serves a purpose as it alerts the user to possible code issues, but you must check all references. The codes are expensive but not as expensive as counting on this guide might be.
What a plumbing instructor thinks........2003-01-01
Code check has helped me immensely. I teach residential plumbing for a 150+ employee 1500+ homes a year Northern California company and have found that the info in C.C. is formatted in such a way that my apprentice plumbers can easily find info they need. They seldom need clarification. All codes cited are referenced with the UPC and IRC section numbers for easy look up.(IRC not used here in NorCal but nice for those who need it) Diagrams are simple and clear. C.C. is laminated and tough. Built for in the field use. I love this book. Holding back the fifth star due to spanish version unavailability.
Its helpful.......2002-12-06
This has good diagrams, good descriptions, but is very basic. For the money you can find a better source.
Code Check Plumbing.......2001-12-28
All jurisdictional and private industry inspectors including anyone who is a state licensed general and/or plumbing contractor, and of course, home owners who wish to know the codes regarding plumbing systems.
Or, "don't leave home without it!"

A sound, well-written companion for home inspectors/buyers.......1998-12-09
This book hits upon the major components of home inspection. The checklists throughout the book are a bit redundant (I found many duplicate checklist items). The book also goes in to some considerations for starting your own business in home inspection, which is helpful. I view this book as a good SUPPLEMENT rather than the "bible" of home inspection because I feel it is not exhaustive and technical enough in content. However, for the non-technically inclined homebuyer, the book will be a good tool to have under his/her belt.
Average customer rating:
- Complete checklist for home inspection of houses or condos.
- Great checklist to inspect any home top to bottom.
- EXTREMELY basic, and not in a good sense
- Excellent Book! We use this to train our home inspectors.
- Great home inspector checklist for homeowners also.

Complete checklist for home inspection of houses or condos........2006-06-13
I own a very successful home inspection business in California. We use all of this authors products to train my staff since they are the by far the best products for real estate training on the market. We originally found out about these products through excellent book reviews in the local real estate publications. In the past I had contacted this book's author for some advice on different areas of the business. From that we learned the following details and decided to purchase the whole "Real Estate From A to Z" series by this author:

Great checklist to inspect any home top to bottom........2006-06-08
This book is designed to be a checklist to inspect a house or condominium and that's what I use it for. It covers every aspect of the home with great detail and enables me to make sure I don't miss anything.
The book is not meant to be a training manual to become a home inspector. Rather this book contains a very detailed checklist to be used by a professional inspector or a homeowner.
I found the sections were very easy to follow and understand. The book has all the necessary and essential components and specifications listed so I don't forget something nor overlook anything important.
So if you need a checklist for checking out real estate then this is a great choice. At $16.95 you can't go wrong and the information it has can save you a lot of money and headaches down the road.
If you need a book that teaches you how to inspect homes (rather than a checklist) then this book's publisher has inspection and appraisal books I found to be the most comprehensive on the market.
EXTREMELY basic, and not in a good sense.......2006-06-02
Aspiring home inspectors, look elsewhere. This book is exactly what it is listed as, a CHECKLIST. Don't expect to actually learn anything about the systems that make up a home. Maybe a decent buy for a homeowner's personal use, but definitely not for a pro or for a pre-purchase inspection. Hire a licensed professional when it counts. For something a little more in depth, I'd recommend Rex Cauldwell's Inspecting a House.
Excellent Book! We use this to train our home inspectors........2005-07-23

Great home inspector checklist for homeowners also........2004-10-02
Looking for a good, detailed home inspector checklist book was difficult since I don't know about house construction and repairs but I still wanted a lot of details to learn what I need to evaluate. This book was great because there are very detailed sections but they are explained in a way that even a beginner can understand. I went through my house on the inside and outside and found many problems and repairs that were needed. I had no idea of how much you really need to check in your home to make sure everything is OK or if something needs to be updated or repaired. Certain problems I found needed to be further evaluated by a professional contractor but at least I was able to identify the problems with the help of this book. You should get this book to check your own home since you will save a lot of money and time later by detecting problems and repairs before they get too serious or expensive - or dangerous!

Customer Reviews:
Useful, practical, do-able, great for New Years' resolutions.......1997-10-28
I bought this book a few days after buying an old house in need of much work. We have decided to adopt at least one item each year from the book as a New Years resolution. They range from the very easy (Clean your roof! Check for leaks!) to the advanced-skill or hire-a-contractor level. But all are detailed, and explain why they are included. Some do not apply to every house, such as the basement hints, but everyone will find something that applies to their house. The book is written in language that you don't have to be a builder to understand; you don't even have to be an experienced do-it-yourselfer to get started. Warning: after starting this book, you will become very paranoid about what could go wrong in your house! However, this is a good thing, as paranoia is the first step toward preservation.

As good as his first book, if not better........1998-01-18
I have concluded that Mr.Youssef is an expert on construction and real estate. After being extremely pleased with his first book, How to Build your own house, I had to purchase his second. I was not disappointed, as Mr. Yoissef once again arranged the book in a resourceful manner which was meant for anybody to read, especially someone who does not know about the subject in hand. Plenty of research and time was oviously devoted to this book and it shows. I am optimistically looking forward to future books written by Mr. Youssef.
