Book Description
He might be elegant, but there's no mistaking it--the gentleman tied to the lamppost on Westminster Bridge is definitely dead. Before Inspector Thomas Pitt can even speculate on why anyone should want to kill the eminent M.P., Sir Lockwood, a colleague of his, meets the same fate at the same spot. The public is outraged, and clever Charlotte Pitt, Thomas's well-born wife, helps her hard-pressed husband by scouting society's drawing rooms for clues to these appalling crimes. Meanwhile, another victim is being stalked....
"Mrs. Perry once again demonstrates her true and lively passion....Her finely drawn characters couldn't be more comfortable within the customs and sensibility of their historical period."

A Road With A Pitt-Fall.......2002-08-31
BETHLEHEM ROAD is another installment in the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series. As such, it has all of the usual features: interesting and, in many cases, familiar characters, an intriguing plot, Victorian London as the backdrop, and a burning social issue of the day that plays a significant role in the story. As occaisionally happens, Ms. Perry lets her soapbox get in the way of her mystery once or twice in this one, but that's only a minor problem.
For most of the story, the plot revolves around a series of murders involving MPs. Each is found tied to the same lamppost with his throat cut. Each was returning home alone and on foot from an evening session of Parliament. This is pretty riveting stuff, and for most of the book there is no obvious suspect. The only suspect on the horizon seems unlikely to be the perpetrator. Both Thomas and Charlotte are baffled. Ultimately, however, the solution to this mystery is only the prelude to the real climax of the story, which is abrupt in true Anne Perry style. For me, the solution to (or, really, the rationale for) the lamppost murders is this book's weakness and it's what keeps this from being a five-star book. The lamppost murders need more of a tie-in. At the risk of giving away too much, it just seemed to me that the lack of intent and motive for these murders left a little to be desired when all was said and done.
BETHLEHEM ROAD is a pretty good mystery with most of the strengths usually found in the Pitt series. While Perry perhaps over-reaches herself a bit here in trying to pull off a plot within a plot, it will keep readers turning the pages from beginning to end. I found it entertaining and recommend it to other mystery readers, particularly fans of the Pitt series.

BETHLEHEM ROAD is another installment in the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series. As such, it has all of the usual features: interesting characters, many of whom are familiar as series regulars, an intriguing plot, Victorian London as the backdrop, and a burning social issue of the day that plays a significant role in the story. As occaisionally happens, Ms. Perry lets her soapbox get in the way of her mystery once or twice in this one, but that's only a minor problem.

For me, the solution to (or, really, the rationale for) the lamppost murders is this book's weakness; it's what keeps this from being a five-star book. The lamppost murders, with their bizarre circumstances and the misery they provoke in the families of the victims, need a more compelling purpose than what we end up with here. At the risk of giving away too much, it just seemed to me that the lack of intent and motive for the murder of these men left a little to be desired when all was said and done.

A case for suffragettes.......2002-06-10
The statue of Boadicea driving her war chariot stands in front of the British Parliament building. Members of Parliament (MPs), walking past the statue every day, contended that women did not have the ability to understand issues and vote intelligently. The year is 1888 and women's rights are a contentious issue. When MPs have their throats cut on the way home from evening sessions, suspicion points in many directions. Was it a radical women's rights advocate, a demented anarchist, or perhaps someone benefiting financially?
Thomas Pitt and his wife, Charlotte, become involved in the investigation. The entire issue of women's rights unfolds including various repressive laws. There are issues of inheritance, child custody, and a wife's obligations to her husband (religious fundamentalists in the U.S. have been revisiting this issue). This is a real whodunit with a surprising conclusion. The novel provides a good picture of the English social structure of that time period.
Murder, MPs, and the Suffrage in a baffling mystery.......2000-06-08
Bethlehem Road is the tenth novel in the Pitt series of mysteries by Anne Perry. While I would recommend reading the series in order for maximum enjoyment, the characters are at a turning point in this book and so you could just jump in here if you wish. Charlotte Ellison Pitt is really getting comfortable in her role as a police Inspector's wife; Thomas Pitt, her husband, has a more sympathetic and appreciative new boss; Emily Ellison March (Charlotte's sister) just married for a second time; and Aunt Vespasia is starting to show alarming new signs of frailty and age. Together, Thomas, Charlotte and Vespasia work together to solve the mystery of the "Westminster Cutthroat" who is murdering MPs on Westminster Bridge.
What I most liked about this mystery was the number of red herrings that were thrown in the way of the conclusion. I found myself unable to figure out who had perpetrated the crimes and went down lots of blind alleys as a result. This added to my enjoyment of the book, although the ending was a bit Christie-like in all honesty. I'm really looking forward to Highgate Rise, the next book in the series, since Bethlehem Road sets up so many interesting new possibilities.
Love Sherlock Holmes? Want a little more emotion?.......2000-06-05
I thoroughly enjoyed this book which I'd picked up at a bookstore and held onto for way too long before I read it. I enjoyed the characters, the relationships, the mysteries around each family's secrets, and felt this book ranked up with Laurie R. King's sherlockian series, and offered up vivid period details and social circumstances. Without sacrificing enjoyment in the least! It was marvelous.
Book Description
The body of a young Yemeni woman is discovered in the attic of a Bethlehem Road house, in a Jerusalem neighborhood famous for its impenetrability to outsiders. The victim, once a beauty, is no longer lovely -- her face has been brutally smashed.
More than the usual horror greets Chief Superintendent Michael Ohayon in the closed and inscrutable Baka, for an old love and an unfinished romance await him there as well. But much more is concealed beneath the surface of this gruesome homicide -- as tensions between Ashkenazim and Mizrahim, hostility between Arabs and Jews, the half-century-old business of kidnapped Yemenite children, and the al Aqsa Intifada of 2000 add fuel to a terrible fire that might never be contained.
Customer Reviews:
Hoping the stilted dialogue was from a bad translation.......2007-04-02
This was a predictable mystery grafted on to an interesting exploration of ethnicity and culture in Jeruselem. I wasn't terribly interresetd in the characters, but the backdrop was facinating; I can't help but feel like the "mystery" (the true killer was pretty obvious from first introduction) was an afterthought. Readable, but I was glad I got it from the library.
Bethlehem Road Doesn't Disappoint.......2007-01-10
Batya Gur has another hit with this installment of her Michael Ohayon Mysteries. As with her other mysteries, Batya Gur integrates the complexities of human behavior, the land of Israel and murder to create a real story. I remained in the dark about who the murderer was until almost the very end, not because I'm slow but because there were so many possibilities. Her insights into the Israel Police Force, Israeli society and Israelis are right on. I enjoyed every moment - and I think you will too.
Oy Vay.......2006-08-18
Interesting for the insights into Jewish society and history, but I found the extended dialogues between and among the investigators and the witnesses tedious, the dialogue between Michael and his love interest just bizarre. At times I had difficulty following the discussion and the actions of the speakers-perhaps a translation difficulty, but nontheless distracting from the flow of the story.
Fascinating Jerusalem setting adds interest.......2005-08-18
Police Chief Superintendent Michael Ohayon is called in to investigate a murdered young woman, her body found in his ex-girlfriend's under rennovation apartment. Because the victim's face was smashed, identification takes a while, but the Jerusalem neighborhood is tight and the missing woman's identity becomes known. But Zahara Bashari was a complex person. She was pregnant, had recently been given an apartment by her boss, was highly active in a movement to preserve the culture of Yemeni Jews, and had been stalked by a young neighbor girl who used magic in an attempt to take Zahara's place among the beautiful. Of course, the Intifada is an ever-present threat and both police and the neighbors are quick to point their fingers at Arabs in the neighborhood. Much better them than one of their own.
Author Batya Gur creates a compelling sense of place in the Jerusalem neighborhood where old hatreds and fears have festered since Israel's founding. The city itself, the creepy atmosphere of fear and hatred caused by the violence cycle between Jew and Arab, and the antagonism between European, Asian, and African Jews all come to stark life in Gur's prose.
The character of Nessia, the young girl filled with self-hatred and with a desperate attempt to conjur a new world for herself is strong and compelling. For me, few of the other characters really stood out, however. Even Michael Ohayon, with his bland and lazy unwillingness to allow his lieutenants to persecute suspicious Arabs too closely, his unexplored fascination with the rediscovery of his teenaged love, and his confused relationship with his fellow police officers didn't really stand out for me.
I love reading mysteries about worlds outside my own--and Batya Gur's Jerusalem setting is certainly that. Gur's descriptions, the explanation of never-forgotten feuds between European and non-European Jews, and the backdrop of Jewish/Arab hatred certainly makes for compelling reading.
"You think you know someone...then you discover black holes.".......2005-02-06
Setting her novel in an ethnically mixed neighborhood of Jerusalem, Israeli novelist Batya Gur continues the career of Chief Superintendent Michael Ohayon, formerly a historian, now a police investigator. In this fifth book in the series, Michael Ohayon investigates a particularly gory murder. An apparently beautiful young woman has been murdered in the attic of a house undergoing renovations, her face beaten to a pulp. No one knows how she might have been lured to such a place or why she might have been murdered.
Zahara Bashari, the victim, has been developing a small museum "for the splendor of Yemenite culture" in the basement of a local synagogue. Complex political issues exist between the Yemenites, known as the Mizrahis, and the Ashkenazis (Russian Jews), and Zahara believes that the Ashkenazim want to wipe out everything that distinguishes the Yemenite Jews. Furthermore, in the 1950s, Yemenite babies were kidnapped from their parents and given to others to raise, and Zahara wants to find out more about this period and what might have happened to one of her own kin.
The investigation is centered on the neighborhood, where Zahara's parents and their next door neighbors have not spoken for years. Nessia, a lonely, young girl with no friends, idolizes Zahara and follows her movements in the neighborhood, collecting "souvenirs" of Zahara's life, and looking for some sort of recognition-until she, too, disappears. Zahara's personal life proves to be complex, and her previously unknown ownership of an apartment and substantial savings account prove particularly worrisome.
The rivalries and tensions within the neighborhood and the police reflect all aspects of society and all political and social movements. Though Ohayon is a moderate in his views toward Arabs, Danny Balilty, deputy commander of the intelligence division, is a hard-liner. Within the neighborhood, however, residents work with and hire Arab contractors, some have friends who are Arabs, and some express annoyance at the strict measures imposed by their government to prohibit the work of Arabs except under certain circumstances.
Though the novel is filled with information about a unique way of life, the mystery is not always easy to follow. Pronoun references are sometimes unclear, the translation is occasionally awkward, and digressions slow down the action. Ohayon's dissertation on love during his courtship, for example, wanders on too long and lessens the tension. Still, author Batya Gur has some good psychological insights into character, especially of the fat, young girl Nessia, and Gur's ability to juggle innumerable characters and plot ideas is admirable. Customer Reviews:
I just call it Paranormal Porn.......2005-12-29
I thought the concept of a shapeshifting storyline sounded kind of cool. The concept still is. The book, misses the mark.
It isn't so much a storyline as it is a thinly written set-up for the next explicit sex scene. There isn't a plot to speak of. Character development is less than lukewarm. Truly, the purpose of dialogue in this book is to set up the next porn-trash scene. Themes in both stories include forced sex and threads of beastiality.
So much potential!! but not over the top........2005-06-21
This was a naughty, naughty, book. Oh me goshk!
It has 2 stories and is 243 pages long.
From the back cover:
J'Tar
"Treaty talks bring Amara to Rubiya, a country rumored to sacrifice royal children to wild Jaxtar cats. More rumors abound about a half man, half Jaxtar called J'Tar.
When Amara meets the J'Tar, a man named Curran, he is a warrior trained to protect his brother, Rubiya's ruler. She cannot believe the rumors. But she witnesses his shapeshifting and is horrified. She cannot reconcile the wild Jaxtar with the dangerous man who fascinates her. Bit by bit, Amara and Curran give in to the passionate hunger they feel towards esch other, a passion they cannot control. They will have to face poachers, hidden desires, secret fears and even the threat of death if they want to be together. And Amara will find that to love Curran is to love all that he is, even his Jaxtar half".
Daughter of J'Tar
"When Arkady meets Riana, he knows why he's been given the gift of healing magic. She's a J'tar, a shapeshifter, part human, part Jaxtar. She's also royal niece of the ruler, angry daughter, and bereaved mother of Jaxtat kits who left her when weaned. She's wild with anger, grief and the desire to be free.
Arkady has secrets. He is a Jaxtar in a human body whose destiny is to be the J'Tar's mate. He is full of untapped magic he cannot use. He's formed a mate bond with Riana that she fears will steal her freedom. But he'll do anything to win her love-vanquish her fears, help her find her kits, make her minkless with passion. Riana is a woman worth winning and his secrets will make him the victor."
My thoughts...Well,,,these stories are more of a porn story with a sci-fi twist and beastiality. The imagination of the story is what I liked. The stories were not very well written in my oppinion and I was left wishing that it was, cause they have so much potential. 'Daughter of J'Tar' was harder to get than 'J'Tar' cause Shay Lacy didn't explain Arkady well enough.I was "Huh, what?" most of the way through.
Feel free to check my listimania for some really good paranormal reads!
Book Description
Until now, couples facing the dilemma of deciding whether or not to stay in an unhappy marriage had three options: individual or couples therapy, separation, or divorce. Should I Stay or Go? provides these couples with a fourth option--the Controlled Separation (CS). Should I Stay or Go? explains CS and shows how it can be used as a tool to help couples make the best decision for both partners.

Show I Stay or Go?.......2007-07-05
This book offered me and my spouse more help than several counseling sessions with a "professional" marriage counselor. It was very readable and understandable.
This book was exactly what I was looking for!!!!!!.......2007-07-03
For anyone considering or alreadt going through a separation, this book is for you! Excellent wording and understanding... the book was written as though I was the author. Awesome book.
Very helpful resource guide .......2007-05-16
This book was recommended to me by my therapist and it completely helped me make a decision about my current relationship. I highly recommend this book to anyone in ambivalence about their relationship, whether married or dating. It is a great book!
Should I stay or go.......2007-05-15
Excellent source of information. easy to read and follow. well worth the money.
Worth a try.......2007-03-29
After several attempts at trying to repair my marriage on my own, this book was highly recommended by my therapist. I reluctantly agreed to read it thinking it would be like all the others I had read before that didnt seem to help. After reading the book, I decided to approach my husband with the idea of the controlled separation (CS). Much to my surprise, he agreed to sit down and discuss it (even though he won't take the time to read it). So far, we have come up with our own CS contract and although it isn't perfect we are working on the marriage. The CS has helped us to diffuse our anger and work on something together without all the fighting and hostility that was interjected into all our conversations.
The one thing I wish the book would have offered is more of a detail outline on how to implement the CS. I was also surprised at the author's advice over certain issues in the CS, such as dating others. For those whose marriages have been threatened by infidelity, this area could be especially painful.
My recommendation is to read the book and then work with your therapist/counselor to help with the areas that you and your spouse may not agree on. Even if my marriage does not work out, at least I will be better prepared for a divorce, having completed the CS first.

Description:
Social mobility presupposes geographical mobility in many rural areas. Migration decisions feature prominently in the lives of rural adolescents, and the viability of local communities often hangs in the balance. As in many other rural areas, the majority of adolescents in Icelandic fishing and farming communities expect to live somewhere else in the future. An analysis of national surveys in 1992 and 2003 reveal that perceptions of occupational opportunities are by far the strongest predictor of migration intentions, and they fully account for gender differences in this regard. Other significant predictors of wanting to stay include being raised in the community, parental support and parental control, and interest in working in the primary industry. Parental education is associated with increased migration intentions, but this effect operates through other factors. In the early 1990s, parental involvement in the primary industry and well-being in school predicted migration intentions, but these issues no longer appeared to be a factor in the early 2000s. Finally, adolescents who identify strongly with the local community and are more proud of their nationality are less likely to expect to migrate. These results are discussed in the context of changing social identities in an increasingly global culture.

Stephanie Pierson, mother of two, has met the emotional and nutritional challenges of raising a teenager. In Vegetables Rock! she aims to help both teens and parents survive the process, ideally with sanity and everyone's good health intact. To do this, Pierson both uses and councils others to indulge liberally in tolerance and light-hearted humor.
To help the family understand the commitment to vegetarianism seriously, Pierson addresses its philosophical and ethical aspects as well as the nutritional ones. She explains that the origin of the word vegetarian has nothing to do with vegetables, but comes from the Latin verb that translates as "to enliven." Endorsing the choice to avoid eating meat as "positive and life-enhancing," she moves on to clearly and carefully outline what to eat and what to avoid.
Talking about nutrition, she cautions teens against living on pizza and junk food, and advises athletic kids to pay attention to their protein, iron, and zinc intake. A table listing specific foods makes it easier for everyone to know the best choices for protein, calcium, and other key nutrients.
There are strategies for dealing with miserable school lunches (eat pasta), and advice on questions to ask when eating out ("Is this vegetable soup made with chicken broth?"). Because teens can get emotional about their beliefs, Pierson suggests they be activists in letter writing and supporting vegetarian causes, but try to remember in conversations that their diet is a choice, not a crusade.
One chapter of Vegetables Rock! talks about specific foods and how to prepare them, from asparagus to dried beans, grains, and sea vegetables. The 60 recipes come mostly from chefs, cookbook writers, and magazines. Identifying which are vegan, Pierson covers everything from what some consider the best the guacamole in New York City--from the restaurant Rosa Mexicana--to Creamy Peanut Butter and Banana Pudding, a dairy-free indulgence from Ken Haedrich's Feeding the Healthy Vegetarian Family. Everything is easy enough for teens to prepare in a college dorm mini-kitchen.
Assessing why at least 11 percent of American teen girls are vegetarian, Pierson concludes, "It's healthy ... cool ... and has the potential to drive your parents nuts. Three times a day." --Dana Jacobi

Vegetables Rock!: A Complete Guide for Teenage Vegetarians.......2007-02-07

Why Couldn't My Mom Be Like This?.......2005-11-17
I have always wanted to be a vegetarian, and now, after the summer I turned 30, I have started this wonderful voyage! I just wish I had had the conviction as a young teen to do this (like Pierson's daughter), and had a mom like Stephanie Pierson to back me up.
I love all of the suggestions and recommendations Pierson gives in this book, which was the springboard (literally) for my baby steps into a meat-free lifestyle. I am much happier and I feel better than I have in years, plus I really feel like I am making the world a better place, one plate at a time! Bravo, Stephanie!
VERY HELPFUL!.......2004-02-21
I read this book and contrary to some others, found it extremely helpful! I'm fifteen and I have been a vegetarian for over a year (a lacto-ovo vegetarian, which I found out through this book). I sat and read this book straight through because although some parts are a little boring I'd say 95% of the book is actually fun to read, which isn't common in this type of book. It's filled with little quotes and anecdotes (sp?) that are really interesting. The only bad part about this book was not all of the 60 recipes were really that great (which is the only reason I didnt give it 5 stars), but there were still some that were. If you're looking for specific recipes, I wouldn't turn to this book, but I found other information very helpful. For example, I'm very athletic and I found that I wasn't getting all the correct nutrients and such that I needed, therefore, I was very tired all the time. This book showed me easily what I was lacking in my diet and through what foods I could get it from. Also, it mentions (not in the recipe section)some really great snacks that I found really useful for when I didn't feel like prepairing something big and was short on time. Overall, I found this book very helpful and I think its a good book to have for both teens (and preteens) and also parents.
Reread.......2003-11-11
I first read this book when I fifteen and three years later I now see why I was attracted to the book in the first place. This book is a very quick and easy read, and answers the BASIC questions when trying to become a vegetarian. I would recommend this book only when someone is doing basic research into changing their lifestyle but if someone truly wants to become a vegan, there has to be much much more research, because there are a lot more information one must know that is not included in this book!
Not That Good.......2002-10-22
I recently decided to become vegetarian, so I got this book to read. I was very disapointed. I think this book provides good information about nutrional and meals, yet is written in a boring, scientific way. This book may appeal more to parents of vegetarians and vegans and adult vegetarians, than to teenagers. This book contains a lot of recipies, and some of them sound good, but most of them are far more complex than a teenager would be willing to cook. I would reccomend this book to parents of teenage vegetarians, but there are better books written for the teens themself. This book also has so many negative quotes including a whole page of someone making fun of vegetarian food and rambling about how they hate tofu. I don't think these are nessecary in a book for vegetarians, there is enough of that without reading about it. However, if you seriously want to research about being a vegetarian this book won't hurt, it is just a dissapointment.
