Becoming the Chef your Dog Thinks you are.......2005-10-13
I came upon this book from a friend of mine who was at a seminar for Pet Sitters In 01/2005. Of course my reading list is long & I first added it to a pile. Then on April 16 my love Aspen a white boxer became ill with Gastritis and a trip to the emergency vet later. I have always been one for alternative methods for caring for my pooches. Aspen was on meds form the vet and my other guy Rudy was over wieght as well. I picked up Micki's book and couldn't stop reading it. I needed to know more for I found her information to make so much sense. My two loves Aspen and Rudy both thriving and look fabulous. Aspen has no more tummy trouble and Rudy even has lost his weight and keeps up with her. I truely recommand this as a must read for all animal lovers. Check out her DVD's also.
Insipid Book.......2005-08-24
I found it to be totally pointless and returned my copy for a refund. I was hoping for a serious book on the subject.

Book Description
This three-part volume begins with the history, emphasizing the contributions and innovations of the different owners of Metlox Potteries and exploring the major developments. Next is a massive section on the dinnerware lines, chronologically listing every item of each pattern by name and division. The backstamps and current values are also included, as well as manufacturing and a survey of the most collectible patterns. Finally, the artware lines: the famous Walt Disney figurines, Nostalgia Lines, Art Treasures of the World, Poppets and Toppets, and cookie jars, for example. This new hardbound book also holds over 300 original Metlox color brochures and pamphlets and over 700 full color photos.2001 values. AUTHORBIO: Carl Gibbs was an avid collector of various items, from 1950s furniture to art pottery, to dinnerware, especially hand-painted dinnerware. He evolved from collecting to selling dinnerware through the mail, to running The California Connection Dinnerware Shop. He loves discovering new patterns and learning about them through this business. He authored two editions of Collector's Encyclopedia of Metlox Potteries. REVIEW: This book shares a wealth of information concerning the Prouty years at Metlox. Although the first edition of the book included a full and complete survey of the Shaw years, this second edition delves more into the Prouty dinnerware and artware. Many new photographs and updated values are included.

The definitive book of Metlox Pottery !.......1999-11-10
This book is the definitive work on Metlox Pottery. It's a "must have" for the collector and enjoyable reading for the person wishing to learn more about California pottery. Full of hundreds of pictures and values, this book is an invaluable guide and resource.
Beyond my expectations.......1999-06-25
I purchased this book to clear up my conception of some of the Metlox patterns but it opened my eyes to some very collectible pieces that I had been over looking. Nice pictures with several styles in each catagory that eliminates the guess work. As a beginner collector of Metlox I am truly please with this book.

First released in 1991, the book has been greatly expanded, with hundreds of new color photographs and new information about the beautiful work of the potters of California. Over 30 different artists and companies are represented - company histories, interesting background information, as well as marks and signatures complement the gorgeous photographs found in each section. All items featured are given collector values reflecting today's secondary market. Chipman's goal is to showcase the best the ceramic industry has to offer -the prominent and innovative studio-level produceers as well as the major manufacturers, including Batchhelder, Bauer, Kay Finch, Sascha Brastoff, Metlox, Vernon, and many others. 2005 values. AUTHORBIO: Jack Chipman has collected California ceramics, particularly Bauer pottery, for over 20 years. He has published books on Bauer Pottery and California Pottery. He is also a talented fine artist who work is in the collections of several museums. REVIEW: This book is the result of a burgeoning interest in all facets of California ceramics among collectors and dealers throughout the country. This book embraces the vividly colored earthenware dishes manufactured in the 1930s and 1940s by industrial plants in and around Los Angeles.
Customer Reviews:
Not the Most Comprehensive Guide.......2007-05-12
Nice enough book, but it is so hard to really provide a complete guide to such a broad subject. I was looking for information about Brayton Laguna blackamoors, and the offering was sparse, nothing more than a line in the index, and a brief description in the text. Maybe the author will do a book on Brayton Laguna blackamoors one day. Anyway, I returned this book because it did not fit my needs. It is hardly an encyclopedia, but rather a pretty picture book with some expanded captions as text. If you want a real tutorial on California pottery, work the search engines at eBay or Google...you can spend hours reading and looking at pictures.
California Pottery.......2007-01-15
This is an excellent book that I use often to identify pottery pieces. Not only does it contain beautiful clear photos of pottery it also provides a wonderful brief, well written, history of the various potters and potteries. Very informative indeed! I also reccommend California Pottery Scrapbook by this same auther.
Exceptional Resource.......2005-12-03
Great guide that covers a good majority of California Potteries with a good selection of works from each potter. Values are not too inflated and color pictures are wonderful. A must if you need a general guide to vintage California Pottery, a hot item right now.
Great reference for California pottery !.......2003-08-10
Being that I live in Ohio, the big pottery names here are ones like McCoy, Roseville, and Weller. I knew nothing about any of the West Coast pottery companies. I desperately needed a source of reference. I chose this book and I have not been disappointed. It covers 28 companies, gives a biography of each, shows examples of the marks used, and very clear photos of items made by each.Descriptions and values of the items shown are also included.I highly recommend this book for any pottery buyers library.
An excellent book for any California pottery collector!.......1999-11-08
I would recommened this book to anyone interested in collecting California pottery. This book has a large selection of photos of the various types of pottery produced and the different markings used on the pottery.

Book Description
The J.A. Bauer Company (1885-1962), known for its simple, colorful tableware, has become one of the most sought and valued lines of American pottery. Bauer pioneered the concept of solid color, mix-and-match dinnerware with their most popular lines of ring, plain ware, and Monterey Modern. The works of this famous pottery are now documented in this new Collector's Encyclopedia of Bauer Pottery, written by Jack Chipman. This long-awaited reference guide features over 300 beautiful color photos in addition to vintage catalogs, brochures, and advertising. The interesting history of Bauer is outlined along with staff and plant archival photos. It covers all product lines incuding Russel Wright artware, Bauer Atlanta, and Bauer Los Angeles - stoneware, tableware, kitchenware, and artware. This book is an easy-to-use guide for collectors and dealers alike. Every piece is described in detail and given current collector values. With a wealth of information, beautiful photos, and a current value guide, this reference will fill a void in many collectors' libraries. We are proud to add this fine work to our line of pottery books. 2001 values. AUTHORBIO: Jack Chipman has collected California ceramics, particularly Bauer pottery, for over 20 years. He has published books on Bauer Pottery and California Pottery. He is also a talented fine artist who work is in the collections of several museums. REVIEW: This book is the second Bauer reference guide published by the author, and contains more items and current collector values. The author's goal of including everything that Bauer ever made, although not realized, was attempted in this volume.

Collector's Guide to Bauer Pottery.......2005-09-11
Great photo shots of the various Bauer products. Highly useful to a novice collector interested in the history and examples of Bauer pottery. Enjoyable as a good read as well as a great guide for collecting.
Collector's Guide to Bauer Pottery.......2002-10-12
This book is wonderful. I found everything I needed to know. Jack Chipman has done a great job - the text is clear and informative and the photos are especially good as they clearly show the important details . This will have a special spot in my book shelf....
INVALUABLE.......2001-07-28
I started collecting Bauer Ringwear by accident with a totally random visit to a wonderful shop on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles called Buddy's Art Pottery. Whenever I visited Hollywood, I knew that Buddy would help me choose that single, special, almost-affordable piece of Ringwear and spend lots of his time sharing his knowledge, as if I were a major purchaser. Buddy has, sadly, passed away and his shop is a thing of the past. Living in New York as I do, Bauer is not a common collectible. In fact, most antique dealers do not even know the name and try to steer me to their collection of Fiestaware.
I am today a more informed buyer and that is mainly due to the writings of Jack Chipman. This Encyclopedia, specifically, has so many gorgeous photographs and such a thorough history of Bauer and its place in California pottery that I feel it is invaluable.
It is obviously impossible for any writer/collector to price correctly since there are publishing deadlines that must be met and prices, as we all know, change on a daily basis from place to place. But Chipman's price guide is a great "jumping off place." As I cruise Ebay looking for a Bauer bargain, I often think of Buddy and I always consult Chipman. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This is the best Bauer book yet!.......2001-01-05
We collectors all need to realize that price guides are just that, GUIDES! No one is ever totally happy with the values in books; either too high or too low, kinda just depends on if you are selling or buying. I feel that the prices are on the low side in Jack's book, but I would prefer that over him quoting the higher California area pricing; keep it real for the rest of us across the country. Even if you disregard the value guide aspect, this book is the most complete, informative book you can find if you like Bauer. The color photos are superb and the history is the best info I have found in print. Thank you Jack for putting up with the critics; just remember there are more fans that appreciate the work you have done for us.
Great for indentification, but for pricing...., I wish!.......2000-05-08
I really enjoyed the great photography and certainly the history of Bauer Pottery , however, from my buying view, the prices quoted and taking in all of the considerations Mr. Chipman states, the quotes are way out of line. I live in the SF Bay Area, and the prices for mint and excellant are much much higher. For the beginning collector this indeed casts a shadow of credibility on the seller. Also, if Mrs.Smith, whose Grandmother left a cabinet full or basement boxes filled with Bauer..An explotive opportunistic situation for the dealer. The potential dealer who knows what he or she has happened upon and essentially gives book price.. Needless to say, when Mrs. Smith sees her dishes displayed the following week at a in that same dealer's store, now for a Prince's ransom, is shocked... I think the book was certainly on the side of professional sellers. Not the side of the owner. And the dealer seldom passes his windfall onto the "new" buyer. Buy low..sell high.Where have I heard this before ?

Great patterns.......2007-08-12
I absolutely love to crochet bags! I was looking for a book that has a comprehensive list of everyday bags and this is definately the one. There is something for everyone (beginner and intermediate). Each pattern is easy to follow and can easily be modified to fit your particular tastes. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a wide variety of bag patterns to build off of. (Also the binding is great and has held up nicely.)
Hooked Bags.......2007-07-13
I particularly like the size of the book, as well as the clear, larger-print instructions.
nicely organized, good photos, easy to follow instructions........2007-05-09
There is nothing really new here. Nothing flashy, just pretty conservative items to crochet. The book is wire bound, which is convenient. I do want to try some of the designs in the book. It shows a picture of the actual yarn used for each pattern.
original and creative.......2007-02-07
i liked the crochet tutorials at the beginning. There are beautiful pictures inside this book and the bag ideas are original and creative. Especially liked the way the author used a mix of stitches in one pattern, and experimented with a variety of yarn. The bags come in all sizes... from little purses and pouches to large shopping totes. The intructions were very clear and gave accurate results. Spiral-bound books are easier to work with!
Great bags book.......2006-12-23
This is a great bags book to add to any collection. The styles are so up-to-date. The patterns are well written and easy to follow. So far I've made about 4 bags from this and I am in no way finished with this book. All 20 projects are worth making. Definitely worth the money.

Book Description
Here are forty authentic turn--of-the-century designs for the perfect home--for both city or farm. Floor plans included!
Today, old-fashioned homes in livable repair are more difficult to find and often sell at a premium. With inspiration from Village and Country Residences, it is still possible to build a beautiful, reliable home in the style of the stately original.
Written at the turn of the century by architect S. B. Reed, this book reflects the attention to detail and pride in construction of an era when homes were built to last. Here are dozens of designs selected by the author for their practicality, comfort, and economy-embracing almost every variety of arrangement and style. Each design is accompanied by a detailed description of its construction (including measurements and materials) and estimated cost. The browser will be charmed and amused to see that it cost only $1,100 to build a three-story home in 1878!
From the simplest one-bedroom cottage on a country lane to the most elegant Victorian townhouse, Village and Country Residences provides time-honored council on building the old-fashioned home of your dreams.
This book is part of a series of authentic Americana from the turn of the century, brought back to print by The Lyons Press. Other books in the series include Handy Farm Devices; Farm Appliances; Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties; and The Homestead Builder.
