The Crumbling Facade.......2007-08-23
Stepping into Bertram's Hotel is like stepping into England of the past, right down to the maids and servers who work there. Everone fits ths part pefectly. All the right people stay there, a mix of nobility, clergy and fine old dames, and people seek out the hotel to have just that experience - a step back in time. Miss Marple has decided to take her vacation at Bertram's Hotel, a place she stayed at when she was a young girl. To her great pleasure and surprise, she sees that everything at Bertram's is just as she remembered it, well, not quite, for everything is not quite what it seems to be at Bertram's Hotel.
The plot revolves around a cast of characters staying at the hotel, and then mixes in Scotland Yard who are trying to solve a string of bank and train heists. When Chief-Inspector Davy makes a connection between some eye-witness accounts and Bertram's Hotel, he decides to check the place out. Initially, he is just as struck as Miss Marple at the atmosphere of the hotel, but he definitely smells a rat, and knows somehow that Bertram's is involved with the case the Yard is trying to solve. What follows is a masterfully woven mystery about an absent-minded clergyman who has 'disappeared' and a young heiress intent upon knowing how much money she will inherit (or who will inherit it if she dies). The matter becomes all the more pertinent when a hotel worker is killed, leaving Davy with no doubt that Bertram's is a facade.
"At Bertram's Hotel" is as fast-paced as all of Christie's works are: the reader never wants to put the book down because you need to know what happens next. Miss Marple's methods of deduction fit in perfectly with the mood of this novel, and she winds up giving the Chief-Inspector a hand in solving the case, naturally, although the inspector is just as sharp-eyed as Miss Marple. The conclusion is both rushed and unhurried, and the story is left with a delightful air of uncertainty at the very end.
Miss Marple Does It Again.......2007-03-11
I am a big fan of Agatha Christie's, but haven't read many of the Miss Marple books. Thoroughly enjoyed this one even though the murder came late. I love how Miss Marple fades into the scenery and does her observing while no one notices her. Bertram's sounds like the perfect London hotel that I never found.
I fell asleep reading last night, but awoke at 3AM to finish the book and set my clock ahead! Unexpected ending, but I loved it.
Not the best AC book.......2006-10-10
Though it has a surprising twist at the end, this Agatha Christie book is slower than the others. Good expression and description of characters, though it doesnt really make much sense where Chief-Inspector Davy finds out who is actually behind all the crimes that link to the hotel. Not the best AC book, but its still is a good read.
Not Christie's best.......2006-07-11
If you've never read Agatha Christie before, do not start with this book. It's not her strongest, and it would be a shame if future readers were turned off Christie on the basis of this book.
It's not terrible, mind you. But it's a tad weak. The plot just didn't hold my attention like her other plots do. Miss Marple is actually in the background. The "climax" ending isn't much of a climax at all. In fact, it's rather a let down.

Dug uvod, bespotrebni dijalozi, jako slabi likovi. Nista u ovom romanu nije onako dobro kako inace velika Christie to zna da zacini. Ipak vredi procitati.

The ordinary experience .......2007-02-10
Rediscovering the Felt Presence of God seems challenging but Rolheiser makes it ordinary. This book has deeply affected the way I view my experiences. It has returned as sense of worship and connection with God not only in my prayer life but in everyday experience. This book is a little deep but stay with it... you really don't need a degree in theology to "get' it you just need to want more of God.
The Shattered Lantern.......2006-06-26
Rolheiser provides real insights in to why so many people are unable to see God as being active in their lives . His thought provoking discussions make one realize that living a contemplative life is far more than simply setting aside time for silence and meditation . He challenges the reader to be contemplative in the midst of a life of constant activity . Great book for group study .
Recover a Vital Sense of God in Our Lives.......2002-07-17
Nietzsche once wrote, "God is dead!" Rolheiser responds, "No!" We simply are blind! If we could only remove the scales from our eyes, we would be able to see Him everywhere in our ordinary existence. Rolheiser states that the scales can be removed through contemplation, allowing us to see God "face to face."
This is a very spiritual book with great insights on the discipline of contemplation. Along with prayer and meditation, contemplation is one of the most effective ways of getting closer to God. This book helps the reader learn, understand and live the contemplative life.
"Blessed are the pure at heart, for they shall see God." Unfortunately, few of us are pure at heart. Rolheiser posits most believers rarely, if ever, see God in their lives. Something is wrong with us. This book first describes in some detail why we are not fully aware of God in our lives - excessive narcissism, pragmatism and restlessness are the culprits. Our perception is distorted because we lack the perspective of the contemplative: an infinite horizon where God is the background to all our ordinary experiences. Simply put, most lack the ability to see beyond their own heartaches and headaches.
The book then turns to the three main contemplative traditions in Western Christianity, the mystical tradition exemplified by John of the Cross, the Protestant contemplative tradition, and the philosophical tradition of Theism. Rolheiser does an excellent job of summarizing all three.
The book ends by succinctly explaining the spiritual exercises we can undertake to help purify our hearts, expand our awareness and reacquire a childlike heart of wonder and awe.
Read this book. Become a contemplative. See and feel God everywhere!
Spiritual reading at its best.......2000-05-13
In this first book by Father Rolheiser he writes a clear and concise guide for those of us walking the contemporary and contemplative path.
He contends that "today we, the children of Western culture, post-modern, adult children of the enlightenment, struggle with practical atheism. Our consciousness is clouded with narcissism, pragmatism, and unbridled restlessness so much so, that we are contemplatively asleep. The road back is not a question of finding the right answers, but in living in a certain way. To approach reality and relationships with a certain set of attitudes. A proper praxis. And, like the Virgin Mary, after a certain gestation process, eventually you will give birth to Jesus. God enters the world as the conclusion of a gestation process.We must live in such a way that we give birth to God in our lives."
He routinely urged me to check my own comfort zone, such as "Endeavor to constantly discern your motivation, that is, be suspicious when the glory of God and your own glory habitually harmonize" and "Enter into the vulnerability of Christ, into his unwillingness to protect himself against pain as he fulfills God's will."
I found his observations about the church and religion today on the mark. His work is very readable and yet I found myself rereading a passage over and over because of the succinct, sometimes gritty, penetrating message. He makes the point that the journey takes time, practice and an ever vigilant opening of your heart. An excellent book that you will read over and over again.

AN EXCELLENT ENDING TO ONE OF THE BETTER SERIES I HAVE READ. GREAT CHARACTERS, INTERESTING STORY LINE AND YES SOMEONE GETS KILLED OFF. READ ALL THREE BOOKS IN THIS SERIES, THEY FLOW EASILY THROUGH THE MIND.

They were pleasure droids..........2005-03-07
After a spaceship crashes on an unknown planet, the crew decides to jettison the cargo, which consists of androids, on a continent and to settle on another continent. Some millenia later, the two races meet.
The droids have evolved very differently that the humans. The continent of the droid is divides into four parts, Hrumma (droids with mental powers), barbarian lands and two Djez regions.
The prose of Mr. Dalmas is very easy to read. I thought that the philosophy and theology behind the mental prowess of the droids was a little too much but as the story went on, it made sense and it didn't take too much reading space.
Although there is no surprise ending, I couldn't put the book away for the last 100 pages. The story is divided in small chapters and is a perfect companion for a quick reading.
Overall, it reminds me of the Spanish invasion of South America. Fortunately, the natives were able to defend themselves better.
Must read for fans of J. Dalmas.......1997-12-17
Wonderful book, Dalmas at his best. Unique Sci Fi plot is expanded into a story that you can not put down. Quick overview. What type of society would genetically engineered human clones develop if left on their own? What would happen to this society when 'normal' humans discover them? I cannot recommend this book enough.

I purchased this book, because I am doing a Graduate Diploma in Maternal & Child Health in Australia. Many of our lecturers were taking quotes from this book and referring to Jack Schonkoff's remarks contained within, pertaining to new evidence on myelination and the importance of interaction and stimulation of small children and the relationship between this and brain growth. It is easy to read and I am confident that both the lay person and health professional alike will glean valuable insight. I find myself constantly referring to this book and know that this will have an effect on my future practice as a Maternal and Child Health Nurse.

An amazing breadth and depth of neuroscience and its implications for how we treat children. Must reading for anyone wishing to get beyond prejudice and rhetoric to the core of what needs to be done in public policy to protect and preserve childhood in modern America. Should be 5 stars, but now a little dated, although references are excellent and it's not hard to follow the themes into the most recent research.

Wonderfully written and a must have for all wine lovers. I have traveled the Italian wine regions and am an enologist and this book was very well written.
Also teaching wine educational classes, I was very impressed with the accuracy and details of the Italian wines and regions especially Tuscany and Piedmont! I will be in Italy in 2 weeks and feel like I was in Italy reading this book.
Buy, read and sip Italian wines!!

I expected alot more.......2003-08-05
As difficult as it was for me to believe this, I really thought that this book would have been much more comprehensive, not just a vehicle to flatter a handfull of producers that must be current Gambero Rosso "Favoriti". I get as much, if not more, out of my quarterly subscription to the magazine. Ordinarily, I really like Daniele Cernilli's writing along with his willingness to take chances and "Tell it like it is". I wish he had done so here. The regions could have been probed much more in-depth and the producers expanded to mirror the magazine. 3 GENEROUS stars.

This book gives a very comprehensive and up to date overview of what is produced today in Italy. A must have for all Italian wine lovers!
