disappointing.......2007-04-08

This is a superb genre novel for the first 350 pages. The pace is good. There are no missteps. The tension mounts. And the factual information and policy information that makes this novel important is accurate and well thought-out. (If you want to know all the facts concerned, read the nonfiction book While America Sleeps: How Islam, Immigration and Indoctrination Are Destroying America From Within.)

Unfortunately, the author makes one mistake at that point, but it is a big one and renders the rest of the book (where the good guys do win) unsatisfying. I won't reveal the mistake, of course, because this book is worth reading in spite of it. The logistics of the final battle are fairly good, although the number 1 bad guy HAS TO BE killed by Stark, not be an inanimate object. This damps down the ending even more.

The author also allows the number 2 bad guy to escape, obviously setting up for a sequel (which I don't think was ever written anyway). This was a big mistake. Besides, no set-up was needed, as the Invasion USA series demonstrates. This problem is not going away, and as long as it's around, there will be an audience for inspiring stories of this kind.

The only failure of nerve of the author was in making the number 1 bad guy a Colombian rather than a Mexican. No doubt there are Colombian drug lords operating in Mexico, but this choice looked like a copout. And making the number 2 bad guy Irish was too much!

Bottom line: Read it anyway, then read Invasion USA, Invasion USA Border War.

Good plot, but could do without the political diatribe........2005-08-15

After reading this novel I could not escape the feeling that this was several hours I would never get back. The writing was hokey and formulaic. The plot had potential, but with all of the political prosthelitizing garbage that was thrown in, the total effect was ruined. I suppose this would appeal to the average Texan, as this baloney usually does, but to someone with a little bit of intellectual curiosity, it just seems like so much unnecessary crap. To be fair though, I did read this immediately after finishing The Davinci Code, which is somewhat akin to listening to Roseanne Barr's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner immediately after hearing it performed by the New York Philharmonic.

Excellent and timely.......2005-06-23

Most true WWJ fans know that Bill Johnstone passed away a couple of years ago, so everything that comes out with his name on it now is ghostwritten. This is still an excellent and timely book that deals with the invasion of illegals from our southern border, and how the government refuses to stop it. Entertaining and informative.

William Johnstone has written as timely a story as one could hope for. VENGEANCE IS MINE is about one man who dares to take on the tidal wave of terror that is the Mexican/US border. Johnstone throws political correctness to the wind and tells it like it is. A must for Johnstone fans--and action fans, too!

Wheeler wrote an exceptional tale by depicting larger forces of the world directing his characters. He draws the reader into caring for the characters and you will find yourself cheering them on or mourning their losses. Even if you don't care for Westerns, this book is an exceptional read.

One Terrific Western!.......2005-01-15

I just finished reading Vengeance Valley by Richard S Wheeler and I certainly did enjoy it. I write gardening books (Allergy-free Gardening, Safe Sex in the Garden, etc. ) but I just wrote my own first western and I had been emailing different authors of westerns, asking them for advice on editors and agents and so on...and a good number of them suggested I read some of the books by Richard Wheeler, saying that he was considered by the other western writers to be one of the best new writers out there.
After reading this book, I would have to agree. This book was not the typical western at all, and had characters quite unlike any I'd seen in westerns before, but I liked them, they were interesting, smart, and different. Wheeler knows the West very well, and has an excellent sense of history that comes through clearly in his writing. I read a great many Louis L'Amour westerns, which I do love, and Wheeler writes another sort of western, but a satisfying one. There is real depth to his characters, feeling, they come alive on the page.
I plan to recommend this book to my friends who like a good western, and plan to buy some more of his other books and read them too. I highly recommend that you check out Vengeance Valley, and this author. If you've never read him, I expect you're in for a pleasant surprise.

This is an excellent book for anyone who likes old time thrillers and wants to read a classic. It was written when nobody really wrote about cops or dangerous detective stories, so it is the pick of the litter for risky cop stories. It is about a Private Investigator, called Mike Hammer, who goes undercover with a group of blackmailing thieves. They set married men up with models, take compromising photos and then threaten to show the pictures to their wives if the men don't pay up. Mike Hammer ends up meeting one of the unlucky men, who had recognized the model he was set up with, only the man ends up dead the next morning. Since Mike Hammer is in the same room as him the D.A. wrongly charges the P.I. with murder. The charge can't stick because the killing was made to look like suicide but Mike gets mad at the D.A. and consequently loses his license. But this is one tough P.I. and he is not going to let it go at that. He ends up searching the streets for the killer and runs himself into a whole mess of trouble that turns out revealing many strange characters.
This is also a good book for any one who likes the Film Noir genre, characterized by complex characters that don't make any sense in the beginning, especially for a young reader like myself. In the end everything came clear and because they were complex it made the story that much more thrilling and exciting. I would recommend this to anyone who likes fast paced and dark characters and a twisting tale filled with suspense.

Private Detective Mike Hammer finds an old army friend dead and leaves a trail of broken heads (and hearts)through New York City as he searches for vengeance.
Not the best of its kind, but enjoyable nonetheless. If you've read all of Chandler's novels, give Spillane a look.

Overlooked....but why?.......2006-02-12

This book and his earlier book have to be among my top tens in terms of science fiction and humour, and yet most people have never heard of these books. Some things strike too close to home, I guess. But do yourself a favor and find these if you can.

I first read this book and it's prequeal (Waiting for the Galactic Bus) about ten years ago. Since then, I've read it three more times, getting something new each time. The last time I read it, I actually took notes on some of the historical characters - especially the two very important incognito figures. This story has many levels it can be enjoyed on, the most obvious being a comical farce; moving deeper there's a lot of serious philosophy here and a scathing examination of the American ideals of Freedom vs. America's religious revisionists determined to make us a 'Christian Nation'. All in all, an excellent read!

Funnier than Hell.......1999-05-26

A whirlwind tour of heaven and hell, or Topside and Below Stairs, as it's referred to in the book. When God/TheDevil/An Alien is put on trial, the author managed to humorously skewer the religous right, the hippies, yuppies, the middle class, and every major religious character out there. Fun stuff.

REVIEW OF "THE SNAKE OIL WARS"

Though THE SNAKE OIL WARS was written almost 10 years ago, it is most apropos to this age of burgeoning religiosity in American politics, bombings and killings by Christian fanatics and more and more breaches in laws and principles that would protect our rights to privacy and freedom of choice. SNAKE OIL WARS astounds by being a satire on America's Puritanical decade of the 90's, written prior to the fact. Is this prophecy or what?

No, this is hardly prophecy, for the author takes us on a whirlwind tour of the history of religious fanaticism, and especially the historical foundations of what we now call the "Christian Right" movement. He then shows the logical conclusion of the movement: a fascist theocracy in which science, technology and medicine is subject to "snake oil salesmen" and in which the poor and those less fortunate than ourselves are scorned just because they do not seem to show the "visible signs of God's favor".

This is "must" reading for anyone who wants to know the basic principles behind why Americans increasingly are losing their privacy rights, why freedom of choice is being made to sound like a dirty word, and what the real agenda of the "Christian Right" is.

It is also "must" reading for anyone in the "Christian Right" movement who would like to know the foundation and logical outcome of the movement. Do we really want to live in a country in which our houses and lives are exposed to an "inerrant writ", where the right to privacy is extinguished, and "legal judgment (is made) on the most personal matters"?

In conclusion, I can only quote the erudite author's dedication of the book:

"To those lucid and courageous minds who gave you the Inquisition, the Salem witch trials, Falwell, Robertson and the God-inspired Rule of the Righteous. To those intrepid souls who fight with unflagging zeal to remove from libraries dangerous books they have not read and from theaters those spiritually toxic films they have not seen, believing that thought is a controlled substance and secular thinking hazardous to mental health."

Life Saving Message.......2007-01-10

Bob Kowalski is my hero.
I skimmed through a copy of this book and then purchased a copy for myself. It is very readable, yet covers an immense amount of detail.
I made the decision to follow this program out of desperation.
My doctor practices medicene, and medicene says old guys like me with bad lipid data should be taking Statins drugs. Another lipid exam was conducted at the end of six weeks.
Total Cholesterol had dropped from dropped dramatically, weight had come down 6 pounds, and no problem with kidney enzymes was indicated.
Bob provides specific information, specific sources, phone numbers and a sizeable index of web sites.
It is a fun book to give to friends that are experiencing the frustration
of life with high cholesterol.

There Is No Cure.......2006-11-10

After reading this book, I have come to a simple conclusion: You can't beat the effectiveness of statin drugs.

The author basically instructs the reader to eat right, exercise and take high doses of Vitamins E, C, and a few other vitamins along with Omega-3 oils, and strict doses of Niacin. Now that's all well and good, but if I were to follow the authors advice on dosage of the aforementioned vitamins and oils, then it would end up costing me significantly more, way more than my $10/month co-pay for Zocor. Plus, like I mentioned, there's no amount of vitamins that can beat a statin drug's effectiveness at lowering cholesterol.

So while the book has some useful advice, keep in mind there is no "cure" and you really won't see significant lowering of LDL or total cholesterol levels using this book. Talk to your doctor about a statin drug.

It worked for me!.......2006-10-13

I got this book last year. It is simple and easy to read. I ordered the supplements immediately. In 3 months I had lowered my cholesterol 28 points so the Dr. did not make me try a prescription. Even with a foot injury and not exercising, the eating habits and taking the phytosterols this year, my cholesterol was down even more. I highly recommend it!

I went to my doctor in November 2005 and had my Cholesterol checked. It was a disaster.

Here were the results:

My M.D. suggested I read "The new 8 week Cholesterol Cure" and follow Mr. Kowalski's advice and check back in 4 months, which I did.

This wonderful doctor is definetly on to something. Best book on this subject I have read.......2007-05-14

This book has become my health bible. I have been following all suggestions strictly. Have not had blood work since starting the program --will do so soon as it has been almost 2 months. I feel good and am sure my labs will be greatly improved. A nice side benifet is a good amount of weight loss without being hungry or feeling deprived. Have read 2 other books on this subject which are not nearly as good. This book is the best I have read. I Like the Endurance Co. he recommends. When I had a problem with taking the niacin I emailed them and they called me to discuss a solution. Good personal touch.

Following this book and taking the phytosterols I got my cholesterol down 28 points in 3 months so that the Dr. did not put me on the cholesterol lowering drugs. I highly recommend the book and using the online address he gives to order the phytosterols.

This is truly and excellent book. A well-written, practical guide for lowering your cholesterol.

I am an MD and my cholesterol "before" was TOTAL: 278, LDL 188, HDL 36, TRIGS. 221. I followed his program, and after just under the 8 weeks, TOTAL 204, LDL 119, HDL 50, TRIGS 147.

Most of what he says makes lots of sense and is backed up by lots of good, solid, medical eveidence. Honestly, I was skeptical of some of what he said, and pulled up the primary journal references, and reviewed, and the evidence was indeed quite good. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE REGARDING NIACIN IN GENERAL AND ENDURACIN IN PARTICULAR!!! Don't miss that last point. This really could save your life and obviate need for statins and other things, which are not necessarily medically evil as some seem to think, but are really not the best for most, as Kowalski points out. BUT, I do think he under-plays the fact that statins probably are best for those with very high LDL, especially, if they cannot reach target LDL level with niacin---but niaicin could help need less statin.

Now, why not 5 stars? 1) Despite being based on good solid evidence, his book is till a bit too anecdotal "me" "the docs I've spoken with", etc.
2) Some things he says are scientifcally a bit suspect---"I've only heard thousands of satisfied people over 20 years"---well that itself is what we call reporting bias---those who tried and failed or had other complaints are very unlikely to write to the author unless they have a real axe to grind. So I would not go in thinking this has a 100% success rate!

Similarly he keeps saying things around studies like " those who started with the highest levels had the biggest changes." We call this "regressiion to the mean". It means that a drug that tends to normalize things will necessarily make a bigger jump for those who are worse off to start. So the drug really is doing the same thing no matter where you are staring from.

3) Enduracin is dirt cheap. But if you start using everything else he suggests as little adjuncts, it really starts to get expensive for the poor or middle class. For example, if you take the Endur phytosterols with every meal, or the Profibe fiber he suggests 3 times daily, and the Pantesin, you've just added about $75 per month. Now that is rough, because I DO think those things help, especially to get a bit more LDL lowering, on top of the Enduracin. But he needs to address teh cost issue head on.

OVERALL: Get the book, discuss with your doc. Try it. If your doc won't give you the 4-6 mos. to try this, fire him!!! Really...because this really could save your life in a very well-tolerated way. But as always, keep up a bit of healthy skepticism ;-)

This book is wonderful and contains a vast amount of knowlege. I read and followed the older one written years ago, and it changed my health.
Now this one even explains more with greater knowlege in it. I love the new recipes. I loved both books.

Leslie Brenner's book is a terrific reference book for anyone who enjoys entertaining. The book starts off with an outstanding recap of the history of cocktail parties. The author includes tidbits like the most popular drinks from certain eras. Who would have thought that the `cocktail dress' deserves it's own discussion?

Like any good entertaining book, this one has loads of recipes. They cover drinks, canapés, and hors d'ovres. There are theme ideas if you want to go that route too. I was surprised over the quantity of recipes listed, 130. You could refer to this numerous times and not repeat a menu.

As if the book isn't complete enough, there are also tips on the practical aspects of throwing a cocktail party. They include the types of glasses to be used, suggested garnishes to have on hand, and musical suggestions. There are few books I would consider handing out as a gift but this definitely is one.

My only complaint is that it didn't have pictures. I'm being picky here and it is not a reason not buy this book. With that said, I wish you lots of fun as you plan your own cocktail party!

Excellent entertaining ideas.......2002-04-07

I don't know about any of you, but my social inadequacies come up when I have people over to entertain. This book was very helpful to me and humorously written. The recipes are varied and good. I especially loved the "Mango Lime Dipping Sauce" and the "Coconut Shrimp" combo. I have recommended this to friends as well as presenting it as a housewarming gift on many occasions. Enjoy !

Indispensible Guide to the Cocktail Party.......2001-11-15

I recently hosted a cocktail party after never even being at one. This book largely contributed to its success. It contains an abundance of information on how to have a flawless party and quick and easy recipes and drink ideas that were definate crowd pleasers. The only drawback was that there were no photographs of the food, but the pen and ink drawings were charming. Thank you Brenner.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2000-03-17

The minute I finished this book, I ran out and got a stack of them to give as gifts to every friend I know. I've never seen (or read) a book anything like this! It's filled with brilliant ideas for entertaining, even if the party is just you and one other. Best of all, the book is hilarious and totally fun to read. Even though I've already read it, it's like a favorite snack that I keep munching on. It's one of those books you can open at any page and find something yummy. GET IT!
