Customer Reviews:
This book is packed with great hikes!.......2006-07-31
Margaret Fuller is an exceptional writer that combines how to get to some of the best locations in Idaho with a little history of the areas you might explore. I own all of her guidebooks and would recommend them to anyone. One of my favorite pieces of information that she includes is how long a hike will take which makes it nice since I can plan better. Being a native Idahoan growing up in Salmon I was surprise at how much information and different hikes Margaret has put into her books. The Frank Church Wilderness and the Bighorn Crags is a must for any avid backpacker. I could loose myself in those mountains (in a good way). The Bighorn Crags have been a favorite of mine since I was 16 when I first explored their trails. Margaret does a great job of getting you into some great country and away from everyone. Don't forget to plan a trip to Airplane and Ship Island Lake then day hike to some of the surrounding lakes. Just wonderful!
A wealth of information.......2006-02-23
This book provides a wealth of information on the Frank (trails, history, geology, etc.). The organization of the book is useful, although more small scale maps would help orient the reader without running out and getting forest service maps of the wilderness with the book. Still, a great guide.

Old material that is still perfect for the trip.......2007-05-12
This book is a unique guide to the Salmon River, it's history and people. Unlike most travel guides, and because of the subject matter, this guide viable long after it's publication. Highly recommended.
Great History of the River.......2007-02-08
A must read before a trip down the river. Excellent job of giving you a glimpse of the trying times and hardships the canyon had on early homesteaders.
River of No Return.......2000-02-01
A river guide essential! This is the definitive history of the Main Salmon River from North Fork to the confluence of the Snake River. Don't float without it!
A must read for any Salmon River rafting & hiking enthusiast.......1999-01-14
Have you ever been on the Salmon River and wondered about the history behind all those beautiful sights everyone takes for granted? Well, now is your chance to find out. River of No Return is a detailed description of the history, dating back to the 1800's, along the entire Idaho Salmon River and its tributaries. The stories of explorers, miners, homesteaders along with their trial & tribulation brings the entire river drainage to life. The actual history behind the river is truly increadible. Being a local Idahoan I had heard some stories of the past, but this book tells of them all and answers many questions. Rafters and hikers who travel down or along the river will be able to truly appreciate the trip because of the detailed mapping and fact gathering done by the authors. I strongly feel that this book is a must for anyone about to travel into that part of God's Country.

Book Description
In Mountains of Memory, seasoned wilderness dweller Don Scheese charts a long season of watching for and fighting fires in Idaho's River of No Return Wilderness the largest federal wilderness area in the mainland United States. An inspiring tale of self-discovery, Mountains of Memory paints a complex portrait of the natural, institutional, and historical forces that have shaped the great forested landscapes of the American West.
A student of nature writing as well as a fire lookout with over a decade of experience, Scheese recounts his life at the top of the world, along with daring adventures such as backpacking and mountaineering in the Bighorn Crags and kayaking down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. All the while, he touches upon the mysterious and powerful realities of the wilderness around himstunning dawns visible within the glass cage perched on a 9,000-foot mountain, stirring flashes of lightning visible all around the dark landscape as the radio crackles with reports of strikes observed and fires spotted, long-awaited trips down the mountain to civilization for cold beer and hot pizza.
In the tradition of Edward Abbey and Gary Snyder, Don Scheese offers readers a meditation on the meaning and value of wilderness at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
Customer Reviews:
from Generation X . . . my, how he inspires us........2004-03-24
This is a well written account of someone who was on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement. As Dr. Sellers recounts his life as a "black militant", he gives us first hand insight of not only his, but "others" involvement in this historical movement. His details caputured my soul and touch my heart. Not only did I have the opportunity to read the autobioraphy of Dr. Cleveland Seller, he was also my long time advisor and professor at The University of South Carolina. This book is as well written as his first hand accounts.
Valuable Memoir.......2001-10-05
I know Cleve Sellers quite well, he's currently a history professor at the University of South Carolina and his students are fortunate to get firsthand accounts of the Civil Rights movement from a lesser-known, but NOT a lesser player in these events. Readers of his book are forutante too, for here you have verfiable firsthand accounts from a man who lived through this stuff and paid heavily for it. In about 40 years, the generation who lived through the Civil Rights movement will no longer be with us, and it is good that documents of this kind will be around to let future generations know what it was REALLY like.
However, it's worthy to note that his closing chapter, on the chaotic state of Black leadership after the Civil Rights movement, is still dead-on traget although it was written in 1973.
Civil Rights Was More than a "Dream".......2000-06-15
This is a reprint of a well-written personal account by a SNCC member and Howard University student. I am glad to see this book back in print. It will give an insight to the young and not so young who, because of the media's almost exclusive focus on Dr. King, have been lead to believe that the only important aspect of the civil rights movement was the "I Have a Dream" speech. Cleve Sellers gives us an up close and personal report on some of the key leaders of SNCC, especially the late Stokely Carmichael (known later as Kwame Ture), who later became, for a short time, the Prime Minister of the Black Panther Party and for many years the primary organizer of the All African Peoples Revolutionary Party.
Sellers shares many of the behind the scenes relationships between SNCC and other organizations and details the tactical and ideological differences which engaged the energies of the SNCC membership.

Book Description
Clarence Winered didn't realize he'd married a witch. But now his wife Theresa is leaving their pleasant town of Hillkirk on a dangerous journey into the dark forest of Havernon. Accompanied by Valla, the old midwife, and a young barwench named Hanoli, they go in search of a legendary flower that has the power to cure the plague. . .a plague that, every day, draws nearer to Hillkirk and its unwitting townspeople. With the help of a foreign doctor, a dissipated prince, a forest knight and his mysterious lover, they just might succeed in their quest. Set in a world recalling northern Europe in the 14th century, the Flower of Clear Burning is a both a story of heroic feats and a sketch of the subtle emotions at work in men and women in times of catastrophe.
Customer Reviews:
An adventurous and highly entertaining novel.......2003-01-05
Set in the 14th century, The Flower Of Clear Burning by Joel Van Valin is the impressively written story of Theresa Winered, a married witch, who is accompanied by a midwife and a bar wench, all of whom must seek a legendary flower with the power to cure any sickness before a deadly plague consumes their home. The Flower Of Clear Burning is confidently recommended as being an adventurous and highly entertaining novel of courage and determination.
Flower of Clear Budding.......2002-11-13
Nice character development accompanied by a surprisingly interesting plot. This "dark horse" is a must read if you fancy being entertained by relative unknowns. Mr. Van Valin, please tell us when and where we can find the next book?
strong realistic fantasy.......2002-11-13
Hillkirk is a quiet, relatively safe town that lies in the eastern part of the realm. Theresa Winered is a married woman stifling from the confines of her position. Hanoli, a barmaid, tries to keep her dignity in her squalid existence. Valla is the local midwife respected for her knowledge of herbal medicine. Although these three women are of different statures in life, their practice of Wicca makes them natural allies in the dark days that are soon to be upon them.
An unstoppable plague is sweeping is on the from the southlands. At the same time a ravaging horde of Barbarians from the east is sweeping closer to them every day, destroy anything in its path. Theresa travels into the forest of Havernon and becomes one of the leaders in the war effort. Hanoli and the man she loves travels to the island of Isalt in hopes of finding THE FLOWER OF THE CRUEL BURNING, the only known cure for the plague. Valla stays in Hillkirk hoping to give comfort to her patients. These three remarkable females, already courageously helping people, play a heroic role in a war they thought there was no hope of winning.
Lovers of fantasy that like heroic battles and plenty of action inside a believable plot will want to read THE FLOWER OF CLEAR BURNING. The characters make this novel stand out from other works of similar style and caliber. The women accept burdens men normally assume with a determination to complete them or die trying. Joel Val Valin is a gifted storyteller who will appeal to fans of Patricia Briggs and Candace Sans.

Customer Reviews:
This book was not as informative as some of the older issues.......2007-09-25
I thought the older books were easier to look up different vitamins and what your body needs for certain ailments.I didn't like the way he listed contents in front of book, some things were hard to find when looking in contents.
Outstanding Reference.......2007-09-15
This is the third time I purchased this book. Twice before, I loaned this book to others only to never see it again. This book is an excellent source for vitamin information.
Understanding vitamins.......2007-07-19
It is a Great book. Comprehensive information, but easy to understand by the novice. Easy to find information and recommendations. It is a must text-reference book to have. Use vitamins wisely. Lean about vitamin compatibilities and when to take them. You may be wasting the value of vitamins and your money.
Great Update!.......2007-03-17
I had purchased Earl's bible at a used book store. Alas, it was from 1979. Even though it may have been "out of date" the information was right on! The Anniversary edition was just as good as I expected. The preliminary findings of some "vitamins" from 1979, were just as he wrote, the new bible just solidified the information. I take this information and compare with my other research, Earl is usually in-line. I don't believe anything verbatim, but this a great basis for natural health. I tell everyone who is interested in vitamins and natural supplements that this book is a MUST have in their library.
Double check the facts.......2007-02-13
For whatever reason Amazon negated my last review. I am not sure why.
Anyway. My issue was that in researching this book, and whether to buy or not, I found out the author, per the cover no less of his book, states he is a Ph.D. He doesn't have a recognized Ph.d as the degree is from a diploma mill. This is not opinion, this is fact. I thought the potential reader should know this before purchasing a book by the good "Dr.".
Amazon really should do better about allowing such materials to be sold on their website.
Book Description
When Dolores and Jack Cakebread bought their ranch in 1972, they didn't know a thing about growing grapes or making wine. Today, Cakebread Cellars is one of Napa Valley's premier wineries, and its exceptional wines are enjoyed in fine restaurants the world over. In THE CAKEBREAD CELLARS NAPA VALLEY COOKBOOK, Dolores and Jack present more than 120 recipes perfected in the Cakebread kitchen over the past 30 years. Using produce plucked from Dolores's garden and featuring fresh ingredients from Napa's artisan food purveyors, the Cakebreads share such seasonal masterpieces as Sea Scallops with Sweet Corn, Roasted Peppers, and Shiitake Mushrooms, and Roast Pork Loin with Apple Brandy and Whole-Grain Mustard Sauce. Best of all, each recipe is paired with a Cakebread wine, making it possible to re-create the idyllic Napa Valley lifestyle at home.
Customer Reviews:
For Cooks--and for California Dreamin'.......2003-12-18
By Bill Marsano. If you haven't heard of Jack and Dolores Cakebread it's probably because their wine is so fine it's always on allocation--there's not enough to go around, so the annual production is allocated to customers and restaurateurs who supported the Cakebreads when they founded their family winery in Napa in 1973. Still, you can get a taste of the Cakebreads and their way of life through this handsome book, written with their resident chef, Brian Streeter. One guiding principle here is the seasons: They dictate life at the winery, and so the recipes are seasonal as well. Another guiding principle is "Napa style"--the kind of relaxed elegance the area has become known and envied for. It's simple, stylish and superb. The recipes are clearly presented one to a page in legible type, and they come from many sources. Of course one expects Hispanic and Italian dishes--the Spanish discovered the place and the Italians were among the first to grow wine there. But the Cakebreads have cast their net wide to cover most of the Mediterranean basin--southern France, Morocco, Greece are also included--and there are Pacific Rim and Asian influences as well. And just for lagniappe, there are several recipes contributed by guest chefs at the Cakebreads' annual American Harvest Workshop. After a few pages of this you are going to have a powerful inclination to get yourself out to Napa. You could do worse. --Bill Marsano is a James Beard award-winning writer on wines, food and travel.
Great Idea for a Gift Basket for that Wine Lover!!.......2003-10-25
SPECTACULAR PICTURES, Informative Introduction and Mouth Watering Recipes. If anyone has been lucky enough to have visited this Winery up in Napa or better yet fortunate enough to have had the pleasure of a glass of Cakebread Chardonnay (or even if you have not) this book is wonderful in presentation and perfect for a Gift no matter what the occasion. Gift Ideas; for that Boss that has everything but appreciates good wine and good food, Housewarming, Present for that Culinary Art Student. If you have friends who love to entertain and your going over during the Holidays... instead of bringing a bottle of wine (like everyone else) give this book, Holiday Gift Basket (with of course of bottle of their wine)((Smile))
I purchased this book the first day it came out and went over it with my Executive Chef; we are always looking for new ideas especially with all the Holiday parties coming up. Recipes are set for each Season throughout the year. I am only giving it 4 Stars because I would say the instructions are not for the novice cook/chef at home, I think the recipes are written as if you know (and I mean "KNOW") your way around a kitchen. The authors have tried to balance the "fancy recipes" with the easier ones to prepare and that is pretty consistent throughout the book from the Salads to the Desserts. I collect a lot of cookbooks and I am famous for collecting cookbooks that I will never use but still want them in my library(just check out my other "Listmania Lists").....I'd have to say that there are a few good recipes in this cookbook that I definitely feel confident enough to try on my own:
Phyllo Purses filled with Goat Cheese, Chives and Lemon Zest
Warm Goat Cheese Salad with Pancetta, Shaved Fennel, and Sliced Pears
Pan Roasted Halibut with Orange, Sherry and River Ranch Honey
Baby Back Ribs with Red Wine Vinegar, Rosemary and Sweet Peppers
Roast Pork Loin with Apple Brandy and Whole-Grain Mustard Sauce
Apple and Cranberry Crisp
I must add in respect to Desserts there are only 2 that are standard the rest are pretty fancy.
