Book Description
Bridget Heaney is a young Irish girl trying to find her way, like so many others in 1860s New York. Her first break is working in the kitchen for one of New York's most prominent men--Isaac Gold. There, hidden high on a shelf, Bridget finds an old wooden spice box, carved with scenes and filled with recipes--with different handwriting and in different languages: the legacy of generations of cooks, handed down through the years.

I was prepared to HATE it... LOL.......2006-04-28
I don't like changes. I want the next Heaven Lee mystery in the series YESTERDAY. But I caved and bought this book recently. It is a great read. Well written, thoughtful plot, interesting and tough female characters. So I promised myself, even though I don't like change, I will order and read the next book in the "Spice Box" series. The second book has a new heroine and yet another historical time period, but I will trust that I will enjoy the works of this author! :-)
New historical mystery.......2005-06-09
Lou Jane Temple is famous for her culinary mystery series featuring caterer Heaven Lee. This is a new culinary series set before 1900. I did not realize this until I started reading it. I normally shy away from historical mysteries, but I am so glad I read this one. Bridget Henry is an Irish Immigrant. She is all alone now. Her friend helps her get a job as a cook in the home of Isaac Gold, the wealthy owner of a department store.
She finds the body of Mr. Gold's son in the dough box on her first day. He'd been shot twice in the chest. Mr. Gold has no faith in the police finding his son's killer, so he decides he'd better do it. He enlists Bridget's help. He also ends up assisting her in her search for her sister. They set off on many adventures until Mr. Gold's wife tries to put a stop to it. Bridget still assists, but Mr. Gold is not as free to join in.
Bridget finds herself in quite a few interesting situations. She is such a wonderful character, and her interaction with Mr. Gold as well as the rest of the staff is terrific. The setting of the late 1800s really adds to this story. I can't wait to read more in this new series. Ms. Temple has a real winner! I highly recommend it.
I'll definitely read the next one too!.......2005-06-08
Lou Jane Temple's latest novel The Spice Box is a historical mystery set in 1860's New York City.
Bridget Haney is an Irish immigrant who grew up on New York's mean streets and in an orphanage with her sister Maggie. Bridget has always loved to cook and has aspired to cook for a wealthy New York family.
Bridget realizes her dream when she is hired as the Gold family cook. Her first day on the job is marred when she finds the twice-shot body of Seth, the Gold's son, in the dough box. Bridget and Isaac Gold, Seth's father join forces to find the killer and Bridget's missing sister, Maggie.
The Spice Box is an interesting look at 1860's New York life and the differences between the serving class and their employers. Temple has also included some delicious mouth-watering recipes.
While the novel and its characters are somewhat predictable and formulaic, The Spice Box is a satisfying and enjoyable read and worth the time. I'll read her next novel too.
New York City 1860's mystery.......2005-05-24
What a great blend of food lore, history and mystery. A wonderful view of the teeming NYC life both above and below the stairs-- An Irish immigrant becomes a cook in a Jewish businessman's home
I enjoyed the Heaven Lee series and look forward to Temple's next story.
A Taste of New York.......2005-05-15
In the past, Lou Jane Temple has written contemporary mysteries about Heather Lee, a restaurant owner in Kansas City, Missouri. She moves back in time to 1860s New York for her latest book, The Spice Box. Bridget Heaney arrived in New York from Ireland as a child, and grew up on the streets and in an orphanage, along with her sister, Maggie. Fortunately for Bridget, she had a love of cooking that brought her to a mansion owned by the Gold family. Bridget's first day in her new job as a cook is disrupted when she finds the murdered body of the son of the household.
In an unusual twist, Bridget teams up with Mr. Gold, her boss and owner of Gold's Department Store, to find his son's killer. As her common sense proves to be a benefit to their search, he learns to trust her, and insists on helping her find her missing sister.
Although this partnership seems unusual, The Spice Box offers a fascinating look at three worlds; the Irish immigrant experience in mid-century New York, and the contrasting worlds of the serving class and upper class. Temple brings Bridget and her world to life while presenting an intriguing mystery.

My Dirtiest Cookbook!.......2003-09-22

Packs a lot of stimulus into a slender package.......2002-02-11
The Spice Box can be used as a concise, informative introduction to the many spiced adventures of varied East Indian vegetarian cuisine. The Introduction contains definitions of Curries and Dals as well as descriptions of many of the most popular spices, in addition to mixtures of spices, such as garam masala, and basic procedures, such as roasting cumin seeds, grinding dals or spices, or breaking open a coconut. The Indian name for each ingredient or dish is always given after the English in parentheses, a practice to encourage the uninitiated.
Chapters are offered on Appetizers and Snacks, Soups, Vegetables, Dals, Egg Dishes, Rice Dishes, Indian Breads, Yogurt Salads (Raitas), Fresh Chutneys, Pickles, Indian Sweets, and the Finale, which is paan, or a betel nut spiced sweet wrapped in betel leaf. Classic curry recipes abound, including Pumpkin Curry, Tomato Curry, Turnip Koftas Curry, Mashed Zucchini Curry, Chickpea Flour Curry, and Pink Lentil Curry. The chapter on breads also contains many classic Indian bread recipes, including Raised Bread (Naan), Chappatis or Roti, Paranthas, Puri, and Fried Bread, or Bhatura.
The Yogurt Salads suggested provide a cooling note to the spicy curries and vegetable main dishes, and the Pickles and Chutneys add further authentic flair to the Indian feast. If the reader prefers, the Introduction contains a list of sources or places to buy Indian foods in the United States organized by region. But it is also incredibly fascinating to see the list of spices that go into a coconut chutney or a sweet mango pickle, for example. The Desserts chapter includes Rose Syrup Milk Balls (Gulab Jamun), Sugar-Coated Cookies (Sakkaarpara), and many wonderful vegetable puddings.
In all, The Spice Box packs a lot of stimulus into a slender package. It's appeal rests not only in its authenticity, but also in its accessibility. It is surely a classic.

How absolutely yummy!.......2001-10-25
This is by far the best Indian cookery book I have ever come across. It is a pleasure to use - I am delighted by it. The recipes are easy to follow and only require easily found ingredients. Everytime I cook from it my husband says "I feel like we've just eaten at a restaurant" we are so impressed! There is plenty for the vegan too.
Our favourites so far are the Whole Eggplant Curry (page 75), Hyderabadi Chili Curry (page 69) and the Pink Lentil Curry (page 112). There are so many wonders awaiting us - we haven't even tried any of the soups or apetizers yet.
My only criticism is the lack of photographs - it is nice to see photographs for reassurance if nothing else!
If you like delicious, authentic Indian food you'll love these recipes!
great cookbook!.......2001-10-03
Definitely a great cookbook to have. The recipes are quite tasty and very straightforward. The book has the following chapters: appetizers, soups (great ones!!), vegetables, dals, egg dishes, rice dishes, breads, yogurt salads, chutneys, pickles, sweets. I was glad to see the mulligatawny soup since that can be a tricky recipe to find a good one and this one is. There are also some really great eggplant dishes like the whole eggplant curry that has peanuts, tomatoes and coconut in it. yum. Glad I bought this book!
Book Description
Travel to Paris, 1790-where a well-executed meal may linger in the memory, but murder is forever.
Fanny Delarue is a young cook for a wealthy family in the Place Royale. In her heart, she is keeping two fires burning-for food, and for her head chef, Henri. Together they feed the household, above stairs and below, and take lessons from Henri's mentor, Etienne de la Porte, chef to a neighboring household.
At the same time, Fanny's trying to ignore the political heat that is building all around her. Chefs need to prove that food and cuisine can promote man's equality instead of reinforcing old class divisions, at the risk of losing their jobs...and perhaps their heads. Tempers flare and nerves are strained, until one day, Etienne is found dead under suspicious circumstances. Who would murder a cook? The Place Royale is in tumult, and Fanny must solve the crime before the flames converge on her hopes for her own future.

Historical mystery set in Paris.......2007-09-20
Fanny Delarue is a young cook for a wealthy family in Paris in 1790. Her mother gives her a Spice Box. She treasures it.
There is a lot of political unrest at this time. Then a neighboring chef, Etienne de la Porte, is found dead under suspicious circumstances. She and her head chef, and lover, Henri, had been taking classes from Etienne. He was also Henri's mentor. Soon after Fanny and Henri's boss leaves the area and dismantles his house and lets all the servants go.
Henri and Fanny end up staying at the master's house because Henri has been injured in the unrest. Then Henri disappears. Fanny searches for him and finds herself in some dangerous situations.
Can Fanny find Henri and Etienne's killer? Are they the same person? Can she stay safe while investigating?
This is the second in the Spice Box series. I liked Fanny and Henri. Even though historical mysteries are often hard for me to get into, I don't find that with this series. The author writes in such a way that I almost forget it's a historical mystery. I just get into the mystery. I found this time period to be very interesting. Not something I knew a lot about. I recommend this book.
exciting historical mystery.......2006-03-08
It is not easy living in Paris in the summer of 1790. The Bastille has been torn down over a year ago, the king and queen were forced to move from Versailles to Paris and the revolutionaries are whipping up the general populace to a patriotic fury. Fanny Delarue lives as an assistant chef to Monsieur Monnard, a wealth bourgeois who works with merchants and nobles in designing and building their homes. The chef to the Monnard family is Henri, Fanny's lover. Her parents give her a spice box as a present and she loves it because of its usefulness and because it was presented with love.
Fanny is perturbed that she sees the same man nearby over a short period of time. She is disconcerted when he speaks to her, calling out to her by name as if he knows her. Violence comes to the housing complex where Fanny lives, when Chef Etienne who used to work at Versailles is murdered. Shortly thereafter, a mob tries to get into Fanny's home and the master of the house flees for England before the violence escalates. M. Desjadins, the English equivalent of a butler is murdered and Henri persuades Fanny to bury him without telling anyone. When Henri disappears, she is kidnapped and told his life is in her hands. She wonders if the contents of the spice box is linked to the violence and murders, and plans to find out.
France on the eve of the Revolution is vividly portrayed in this exciting historical mystery. The violence is just beginning and readers learn first hand how the citizenry cope in such a volatile political climate. Although not yet out of her teens the heroine is a mature woman who knows what she wants and goes after it. Lou Jane Temple has written a mystery that takes several unexpected twists that leaves reader shocked. This is a most enjoyable who-done-it and why.

A sweet coming together of three lost souls.......2001-01-13
This is a story about a lonely old woman, an alone young woman, and a little boy who needs a little attention. God brings them all together while teaching the old woman that opening her heart is a lot more fulfilling than having a full purse. A charming and heartwarming tale.

Early on in Quantum Healing, Deepak Chopra asks an interesting question: Why, when your body mends a broken arm, is it not considered a miracle, but when your body rids itself of cancer, it is? Chopra believes the two phenomena spring from the same well, that the body is capable of doing much more than we assume it can. He calls this ability to cure disease from within "quantum healing," and shows how we're all capable of it. He believes intelligence exists everywhere in our bodies, in each of our 50 trillion cells, and that therefore each cell knows how to heal itself. It's a fascinating assertion, one that remains unprovable by science but overwhelmingly true by anecdote.
Book Description
Here is an extraordinary new approach to healing by an extraordinary physician-writer -- a book filled with the mystery, wonder, and hope of people who have experienced seemingly miraculous recoveries from cancer and other serious illnesses.
Dr. Deepak Chopra, a respected New England endocrinologist, began his search for answers when he saw patients in his own practice who completely recovered after being given only a few months to live. In the mid-1980's he returned to his native India to explore Aruyveda, humanities most ancient healing tradition. Now he has brought together the current research of Wetern medicine, neuoscience, and physics with the insights of Ayurvedic theory to show that the human body is controlled by a "network of intelligence" grounded in quantum reality. Not a superficial psychological state, this intelligence lies deep enough to change the basic pattenrs that design our physiology -- with the potential to defeat cancer, heart disease, and even aging itself. in this inspiring and pioneering work, Dr. Chopra offers us both a fascinating intellectual journey and a deeply moving chronicle of hope and healing.

Great Read.......2007-08-17
Very interesting. Great for anyone interested in traditional or alternative medicines. Also great for anyone who may need help with their health or just wants to make the most of their current health. I found it quite useful.
long time favorite.......2007-06-27
Deepak Chopra is a long time favorite of mine. I have read Quantum Healing several times and I ordered the CD just to hear Dr. Chopra's voice. He has such a beautiful attitude toward the human condition.
SUPERB CD WITH SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION ON HEALING!.......2007-06-21
In my opinion, ALL of Deepak Chopra's CD's are wonderful. I own over 12 of the CD's and all of the cassettes that Dr. Chopra has ever written. Since 1995, I have listened to Dr. Chopra's audio books and have read 6 of his books as well. All of them I still own and refer to. This is an audio book that has something to offer all who have an open mind and who enjoy learning about science!
another thumbs up for Dr. Chopra.......2007-03-12
Although this is one of Dr. Chopra's earlier books (1988), it is just in time! The mind-body-spirit concept has caught on with several writers lately, but Dr. Chopra was way ahead of the field. This is a book for anyone at any age, and particularly helpful for those with a serious illness (cancer, or other life-threatening diseases). It will lift you up and present some alternatives to modern medicine. Also, you will want to read the latest Chopra book, "Life after Death."
An alternative way of looking at human health and medicine.......2007-02-07
Quantum Healing is both intellectually challenging -as the author,Deepak Chopra, draws on the theory of quanta in Physics to illuminate some blind spots in the biomedical model of treating illness- and emotionally soothing, as he draws on his clinical experience to bring up the body/mind interconnection and the human side of the patient/physician relationship.

This Book was first published in January 1999 and six reprints were released in the same year.Subsequently, over the years, four more Reprints were produced. No further testimony is needed to assess the value of this book. One wonders what would have been the Indian Kitchen without such wonderful books from this prolific writer.
