Book Description
This collection of five stories and a novella describes life in China during the Cultural Revolution. Focusing on personal relationships and showing how they were affected by the political upheavals and social pressures of the time, Geling Yan presents a series of often tragic tales, beautifully balancing irony and intense emotion. The collection includes "Celestial Bath," the basis for Joan Chen's award-winning film "Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl."

Rich and Moving Portrayal of Chinese Life.......2005-06-16
Geling Yan's White Snake and Other Stories depicts life during the Cultural Revolution in China, mainly through the experiences of Chinese women. Yan herself was born in Shanghai and inducted into the People's Liberation Army at age twelve, where she served in both ballet and folk dance troupes. Yan is well known in China where she has won a number of literary awards. She was a news correspondent in the 1970's covering the Sino-Vietnamese war, and when her tour of duty ended, she began writing creative works. She has published five novels, three short story collections and several screenplays including Xiu Xiu, The Sent Down Girl. White Snake was the first of her works to be translated into English. She now lives in the San Francisco Bay area.
Yan is a gifted writer. Her descriptions of scenes and emotions are so well developed, the reader is genuinely transported to scenes in China. Her stories build a tension that remains high until the ending. Her character development and grasp of the intricacies of relationships are so realistic that the ending truly affects the reader. Her stories are rich with deeper meaning and almost mystical in presentation, perhaps influenced by her being raised on Chinese folklore. The title novella "White Snake" describes the transformation of a celebrated ballet dancer imprisoned for spying following a love affair with a Russian dancer. The story of Sun Likun's fall from grace ironically mimics the Chinese folktale of the White Snake, her signature role. The mythical White Snake struggled against her own fate when she left the heavens because of her love for a mortal.
The book's other short stories each explore different aspects of Chinese life and relationships. "Celestial Bath" is a tragic tale of a teenage girl sent to the countryside to perform her required government service and then trapped by local government bureacrats into prostitution to buy her ticket home. "Nothing More Than Male and Female" explores the feelings of a woman who moves into the family home of her fiance months before the wedding, and then discovers she has fallen in love with his brother - a sensitive, semi-invalid not expected to live long. "Siao Yu" is about a young Chinese woman who is forced to marry an elderly man so she can stay in Australia long enough to achieve permanent status and then marry her young Chinese lover. The only story with a male protagonist, "The Death of the Lieutenant," conveys the hopeless case of a man from an impoverished village, who joins the army in hopes of bettering himself and then kills an officer accidentally. A female news reporter is disturbed by his calm acceptance of a sentence of execution.
The common theme in this book of stories is the mortal person, flawed, hoping for something better, but struggling along to survive with whatever is dealt to them. The women in particular in her stories are oppressed by hundreds of years of Chinese culture and even under the Revolutionary regime must still fend off men who want to use them for sex and the societal expectation that they will marry. Her female characters are strong and independent despite their circumstances.
Stories which chnge the reader.........2002-03-03
To review these short stories demands the shortest of comments. Geling Yan thankfully has been translated so that for those of us who can only read 'English' have not been denied stories, which once read cannot be forgotten. I truly cannot praise the quality, emotional content, technical structuring, linguistic texture, etc. etc., sufficiently highly. I can only suggest that you read these short storiesand discover their wonder.
Sensitive, Thoughtful, Creative.......2001-10-01
I was a bit surprised when my husband first handed me my copy of 'White Snake and Other Stories'. I had never read any Chinese literature in my life and was quite unfamiliar with Lawrence Walker and Geling Yan as a translator author team.
What a wonderful surprise my husband's gift turned out to be! The writing style was so sensitive, thoughtful, creative that I felt I was literally being transported into another time and another culture. I feel that what I learned about China in the short time it took me to read this book is priceless, not to mention the true enjoyment of reading good, creative original literature like 'White Snake'. My congratulations to both Geling Yan for writing this marvelous book, and to Lawrence Walker for doing such an incredibly brilliant job at translating what must have been an unbelievably difficult work. He made it so easy to read that one would have thought it was written originally in English. And Geling brought to me her China in her own wonderful way!
A Delightful and yet Disturbing Portrayal of Life.......2001-09-28
Geling Yan's WHITE SNAKE AND OTHER STORIES is an excellent collection of the author's 6 short stories. "White Snake" is pyschologically and emotionally most subtle. The story derives the theme allegorically from an ancient fable of love for its plot, and it transforms that faithful love into a very subtle and complex human experience that deserves various interpretations. As in her other stories, "White Snake" leaves room for the reader's imgaination to explore and appreciate its meaning. It is poetic! "White Snake," "Celestial Bath" and "Siao Yu" are also political. The author is skillful to portray an individual's life in the context of a large and powerful world of political entity. "Celestial Bath" and "Siao Yu" actually depict a tragedy of the Chinese nation. Hemingway-like detachment is the author's approach, even in "The Death of the Liutenant" in which the woman writer is apparently the author's alter ego. Lawrence Walker's translation is fluent, faithful to the original and very readable. Yan's style, however, is so sophisticate that no translation can do justice. (This is the problem for all translations). This collection of Yan's stories is a suitable text for a contemporary Chinese literature course.
A window on China.......2000-08-17
Viewed from San Francisco, China, its people and culture have been an integral part of this city and its history since the Gold Rush. Like most San Franciscans and I daresay most Americans, while I am curious about the country, for the most part my knowledge is superficial and limited to glimpses of what really makes China tick. Chinese American cuisine and frequent trips to Chinatown have given me only a suggestion of the culture and life view of the Chinese.
White Snake and the characters depicted gave me an insight to the Chinese mind in the way that few other books have. Celestial Bath in particular, is one of the most poignant stories of unrequited love I have ever read. My wife and I have re-read it several times and always are moved by it, particularly the closing scene.
A gifted author who draws on her own experience in China, Geling Yang has helped me to bridge the cultural divide between America and China. I look forward to reading more of her works to continue to deepen my knowledge of China and her people.
Larry Walker's translation of the collection - always a challenge - is a tour de force.

Cain't wait to see the Movie.......2007-05-27
One of the best fast moving story that I have had the pleasure of reading. From the first page to the last it was hard to put this book down. I would love to see it made into a movie. I highly recommend this book.
"...A captivating read that becomes more and more transfixing as this story unfolds.".......2007-01-27
"Snake Walkers is a fascinating read that revisits a horrific time in history where the lives of African Americans were tragically taken by those who wanted to suppress them."
"This gripping story begins with Anthony Andrews as a young boy witnessing the heinous hanging of a young boy. A murder that he relives in his nightmares, yet he keeps it a secret. This traumatic event plays a direct part in the path his life takes."
"Years later, Anthony becomes the first African American reporter at the Arkansas Sun. He is given an assignment to investigate the mysterious disappearance of several men in the town of Evesville."
"During the assignment Anthony becomes very close to one of the families linked to the men who disappeared. The closeness he feels towards this family is no coincidence as they share something in common that will bond them together forever."
"As Anthony comes close to finding answers his life is threatened and he comes to the realization that he is being used by those who have a hidden agenda. He is forced to make some difficult decisions in order to protect his life and the lives of those he loves."
"J. Everett Prewitt has created a captivating read that becomes more and more transfixing as this story unfolds. This talented author does an outstanding job with his first release."

Reviewed by Beverly Pechin for Reader Views (3/06)
When first approaching "Snake Walkers" I wasn't so sure it was going to be my 'cup of tea'. It seemed to be another one of those stories set back in the days of racial conflict, one we've all heard before... but I quickly realized I have never seen this side of the race wars. Set in the late 1940's through the 1960's the story begins with a young black boy (Anthony) seeing another boy being hung and beaten by a group of 14 white men. Scared to the depths of his soul he holds this vision deep within for decades, allowing it to eat at him until he's finally forced to confront the issues of what he saw.
Anthony vows to make right the wrongs he has seen, if even by making a small difference in the world of blacks but his ways of 'making a difference' seems to differ a lot from what many others are doing during this time of conflict. His father brings him up to believe that the colored folk are in the predicament they're in because of their own ignorance and violence. Anthony follows in his father's way of thinking and feels that he can make a difference by being the best he can be and not making those he's fighting against angry with such 'stupid' actions as marches and out right confrontation. He chooses to ignore the violence involved with often innocent black men and women or at the least, put it in the back of his mind.
Then Anthony lands a job as 'the first negro to write for the Sun'. This position makes him feel as thought this is his chance to make the difference he's always wanted to make. He finds himself working on a story, which soon becomes a much deeper and darker story than he ever thought. Then to complicate matters even more, he seeks some answers from a beautiful, intelligent professor that he instantly has feelings for, but doesn't want to allow those feelings overtake his ability to write a good story. As he uncovers more and more information it becomes less and less clear who is 'on his side' now and he finds danger in every corner.
During his quest, he also finds that perhaps his father's ways aren't the right ways. He finds that family isn't always as cut and dry as he thought, and begins to understand the true meaning of family ties and bonds.
While the beginning of the book was a little slow, a little perseverance will put you deep within the soul of a touching, thrilling story like no other. You've never seen the times of racial wars like this before, I can assure you. It's a wonderful book that will open your eyes to many things, including what true love and family means.
A Telling Story.......2006-02-06
Although this book may be a little slow to start, keep reading. Once it grabs you, you'll be glad you stayed. First-time author, J. Everett Prewitt, makes his strong debut with a novel of racial atrocities and civil unjustice. To do this, he introduces Anthony Andrews, a black child, who witnesses a hanging. This incident haunts Anthony and guides him to become a reporter. When Anthony accepts a position a the Arkansas Sun, he believes it is because of his talents and not because he is black.
Investigating the first big assignment he is given takes Anthony to a small town abandoned by its occupants and onto Cleveland, Ohio. Over time, and with the help of the strong characters created by M. Prewitt, Anthony comes to realize how naïve he has been all of his life. There are two points of view and he needs to choose which one is his for himself. When his father confronts him, "So, you go up North, listen the ramblings of some man with a blue-collar job and no education, then come back down here to enlighten me?...I taught you to think for yourself." Anthony replies, "No, Dad. You taught me to think like you."
"Snake Walkers" takes historical facts and characters and interlaces them with fictional ones. Read the book and decide for yourself. As Harriet Tubman is attributed with saying, "I would have freed a thousand more if they knew they were slaves." J. Everett Prewitt is certainly an author to look for. I'm sure he has many more stories to bring to us.
Brilliant, Soul Searching, Penetrating.......2006-01-15
J. Everett Prewitt is a natural story teller. I was drawn right into the story. He captured my attention from the first paragraph. The plot carries with it all the elements of conflict, romance, and intrigue.
The action is heightened by a masterful pacing of conflict and resolution. Throughout the story Prewitt maintains suspense. The story unfolds a haunting theme of mystery.
His descriptive phrases and imagery activate all five senses. I smelled the flowers, heard the twigs crackling, and felt the explosion of a gun blasting nearby. Although often graphic, Prewitt was sensitive as he described the racial tensions of the 1960s and atrocities that often went unacknowledged and unreported.
I was deeply moved by the underlying current of family loyalty, secrecy and tension. The novel gave the author a platform to enlighten in the reader a moral and social responsibility. I was deeply touched and was often struck by an emotional chord as I recognized the impact of environment and family heritage on my own growth and value formation.
The author's sensitive writing and insightful character development creates an empathy for his all his characters, the heroes and the downtrodden. Each was faced with choices based on ritual and tradition that might have an effect on the life and safety of others.
I highly recommend this book anyone consciously trying to bridge the social injustices of the past with the hope of the future. This is a brilliant, penetrating novel.

Buying today after checking it out of the library repeatedly.......2006-08-12
My son is mildly autistic and has a very vivid imagination. He not only works his way through the maze but makes up adventures involving all the little pictures.
Took FOREVER, but worth the wait!.......2006-06-08
We ordered this from Amazon because of the other reviews. It took a very long time (about 6 weeks) to arrive because they order it from the UK. It's very unique and funny and my 5-year old LOVES it. It's basically Chutes and Ladders in book form, like a puzzle/maze book. It's great for independent pre-reading as well. My son sits and traces it with his finger and talks to himself about the strategy he will use. It's very cute to watch. I highly recommend this book and a lot of patience in the waiting for it!
Fun, Entertaining - and teaches good prereading skills too!.......2006-04-20
This book is excellent for developing the visual processing and clue finding skills that are needed to get ready to read, but it's so much fun and so silly that they never know that they are practicing a key skill!
The spatial decision making aspect especially appeals to boys [I have three of varying ages] while I suspect that the funny little antics and questions asked by the mice might be more enticing to girls. I'm not being sexist, just acknowledging that there are often some gender-based preferences in processing information. It's all good skill practice.
It's the kind of book you could look at a thousand times and notice something new each time that you didn't notice the last time you looked at it. Heck, I like to do the maze myself and search for the mice's missing items and I'm in my forties.
This is a great thing to pull out when a child needs to be entertained quietly for a chunk of time. Most children under 4 will need adult help with the game, but it's still fun and quiet. I definitely recommend adding this book to your home library.
Great Entertainment.......2000-02-09
i took this book to entertain a four year old at her big brothers school concert and it kept her engrossed for over half an hour - the only noise being her groans every time she went down a snake. It was victoria's favourite book for over a week enabling her to entertain herself for long periods - and the 10 year old enjoyed it too. Get this book and keep it safe for a time when the ultimate distraction is required!
Fantastic and tons of fun!.......1998-06-30
The hands down favorite with my 5 year old- it has kept him captivated for HOURS mastering the maze and finding all the silly mice. I would highly recommend this as a great book for a B-day gift that any parent would love too.

Book Description
Twenty to thirty million Americans suffer from some form of diagnosable depression, and their ranks are growing. Psychologist Michael D. Yapko explains that in order to find relief, more than the current episode of depression must be examined. In Breaking the Patterns of Depression, he presents skills that enable readers to understand and ultimately avert depression's recurring cycles. Focusing on future prevention as well as initial treatment, the book includes over one hundred structured activities to help sufferers learn the skills necessary to become and remain depression-free.
Breaking the Patterns of Depression begins by translating the clinical literature on psychotherapy and antidepressant medication into language that can be used to enhance an understanding of depression, and to personalize individual cures. Yapko uses a conversational, anecdotal tone that encourages readers to take an active approach to helping themselves. Special sections entitled "Learn by Doing" and "Shifting Perspectives" help develop the skills necessary to manage difficult experiences. Readers learn how to solve problems effectively, anticipate the likely consequences of their actions, think and act in a direct, goal-oriented fashion, balance different areas of their lives, and use self-knowledge to stay out of harmful situations.
More realistic and helpful than other depression-management books on the market, Breaking the Patterns of Depression defines what causes depression and, best of all, clarifies what can be done about it. With this knowledge in hand, readers can control their depression, rather than having depression control them.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent self-help book.......2006-11-05
My wife gives copies of this book to many of her psychotherapy clients. She regards it as an excellent aid to overcoming depression.
Excellent service.......2005-09-27
I needed to reference this book for a counseling situation and it came right on time and in great condition. Thanks
Not for sufferers of clinical depression.......2005-08-31
This book was recommended to me by a mental health professional. I struggled to get through nearly 300 pages of this drivel before writing this review. This book takes everything that depressive patients have been told and tosses it out the window. Patients suffering serious depressive episodes will likely be offended by the simplistic attitudes taken by the author. It's premise seems to be that depression can be cured by sheer force of will - get up, go out, see people, exercise, blah blah blah. "Optimism is a choice", "Where there's a will, there's a way" and other such empty platitudes fill this book. People in the grips of serious depression know that no amount of will can get them out of bed on some days, and that leaving the house at all can seem like a major achievement. What is most irritating about this book is that the author vacillates between conflicting opinions, advocating one side of an argument and then equally advocating the other - sometimes within a single paragraph. It's hard to decipher what this author is trying to convey, except for the general notion that all depression can be controlled simply by the power of positive thinking on the part of the afflicted. Tom Cruise told me that a few weeks ago for free - and he's not a Ph.D. Don't waste your time on this one.
This review explains the need for magnesium.......2005-07-05
While this book may help some people, an even better book is Dr. Carolyn Dean's book The Miracle of Magnesium. Here is a quote from Dr. Dean's book regarding magnesium in the treatment of depression: "With proper amounts of magnesium, nature makes sufficient serotonin and you experience emotional balance. But when stress depletes magnesium, a vicious cycle spins out of control and depression can occur. The body needs magnesium in order to release and bind adequate amounts of serotonin in the brain. The pharmaceutical industry has focused its research for the treatment of depression on serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac to capitalize on serotonin's chemical effects instead of giving serotonin what it really needs -- magnesium...Magnesium deficiency is a potential cause for every type of depression. All treatment protocols should begin with adequate doses of this valuable mineral." If you are suffering from depression, I beg you to acquire and read Dr. Dean's book and take supplemental magnesium daily as Dr. Dean recommends. You may find that this important nutrient is the solution you have been seeking.
Nature vs. Nurture.......2005-06-12
Yapko is a practitioner of what the contemporary theorists refer to as "poststructuralist thinking." His title says it all: "Patterns" are interpretations, or constructions, of reality. For a depressive to change her reality, all she has to do is substitute new interpretations and constructions for her old, counter-productive readings of experience.
Although Yapko tries to provide some balance, he essentially opposes biological, genetic, psychoanalytic, and even behaviorist approaches to depression. Negative thinking isn't in your genes, your psyche, or the "external" world (though the environment influences its increasing hold on individuals): it's in you. Consequently, Yapko reasons, you can control it if you follow his advice: stop thinking about yourself (self-consciousness leads to paralysis); avoid "global" thought (produces despair) in favor of concrete, practical thinking; forget about the past and direct your attentions to the individual's capacity to create the future.
Yapko's advice, directives, and exercises will no doubt appeal to some readers more than others. For those who suffer from occasional "down" time, or smoldering but mild "dysthymia," the book could prove inspiriting if not inspiring. Other readers will no doubt have a "that's easy for you to say" kind of reaction to this book. Too frequently it can take on the reductive tone of a parent who, in denial of a child's depression, exclaims: "Stop being depressed. It's not good for you."

Customer Reviews:
Low-Carb.......2006-11-10
If you're on the path of eating the low-carb way, this cookbook offers endless possibilities of preparing simple, new, healthy and tasty foods that trick you into thinking you're eating all the things you shouldn't!
You can't tell these are low carb dishes.......2004-01-13
I have tried about 20 of the recipes in this book, and I'm ordering 3 more copies to give to my friends who keep borrowing mine. The crunchy biscotti (mandel bread) and delicious pumpkin walnut bread are unbelievable, people who don't care about low carbs love these desserts too, they don't taste the least bit "funny." It is really easy to stay on a low carb diet when you can bake and freeze tasty desserts like these. The meat recipes are good, and I like the author's creativity with vegetables; the garlic and pine nut spinach has been a big hit with my friends. Not all of the baked goods were spectacular, but it is nice to have some variety. I found the roll cakes to be a little eggy, but still good. I have lost about 10 pounds, I wasn't very overweight to start with, but I am eating lots of vegetables and feel very healthy with the help of this cookbook.
So far so good.......2003-06-10
I've only tried one recipe so far, the Chinese chicken wings, and I was very impressed. So easy to make, and tasted great. I look forward to trying additional recipes.
The greatest!.......2003-05-15
I own many low carb cookbooks (Fran Mccullogh, Linda Gassenheimer, Atkins cookbooks, etc,) and honestly none of them compare to this book. this is just the best. With useful information, DELICIOUS and un-complicated recipies, that fit perfectly when doing Atkins or another low carb method to lose weight or as a new adopted lifestyle.
Highly recommended, I just LOVE this book.
Incompatible with Bettina Newman's book.......2003-01-24
I bought this book when I bought Smart Low-Carb Eating (Bettina Newman's book). I read the Newman book and tried a couple of recipes (which were very good), then re-read it. I then took a look at the Rodnitzky book and almost fell over when I saw the number of calories in some of her recipes. Let's not kid ourselves with this low-carb diet business: calories and portions do count. 700 calories in a serving? Are you kidding? There's no way these two books are going to jibe. If you agree with Bettina Newman that there's a smart way to do the low-carb thing (minding portions, for one thing), you needn't bother buying the Rodnitzky book because you'll do what I'm going to do: send it back.
