The murder mystery aside, this book remined me of a Jane Austen book - I'm thinking of Mansfield Park. I really enjoyed the detectives - Inspector & Emily. They should have worked together again in a future book. I was slightly disappointed with the romatic storyline, a girl like Emily deserved better, as Major Burnaby says!
Still the cozy atmostphere, small town charactors & humor were all there, making this a worthwhile read.

Neglected Mid-Period Masterpiece.......2006-07-12

US readers used to know this one as "Murder at Hazelmoor," but nowadays they call it by the name Christie used, "The Sittaford Mystery." What a dull title! I guess the experience of slow sales with "The Listerdale Mystery" didn't teach her much, for this one also seems often to fall between the cracks when fans compile lists of Christie's best books, and I think it's the colorless title that does it, for otherwise this book is nearly the equal of the two midperiod masterpieces that followed it, CARDS ON THE TABLE and DEATH ON THE NILE. It lacks the complete assurance of the sleight-of-hand play of CARDS, and of course it is entirely missing the tragic dimension of the opera that is DEATH ON THE NILE, but THE SITTAFORD MYSTERY is indeed a wonderful treat for Christie readers. I wonder, if Poirot was in it, if it would be better known?

Instead we have the admirable Inspector Narracott, and his opposite number, the inventive, spirited, dazzling heroine Emily Trefusis, a sparkling Katharine Hepburn type no man can resist or outwit. Things look bleak of Emily at the beginning of the story as her sad sack boyfriend, Jim Pearson, is arrested for the murder of his uncle, Captain Trevelyan, in a little English village near Dartmoor--Sittaford--or Hazelmoor--one of them, I suppose. All I remember is that the book begins with a spooky seance of table turning, when the table raps, raps, raps, revealing Trevelyan's name and to the surprise of almost everyone present, the spirit voices say he has died! Six miles away, his body lies on the floor of his home, sandbagged, in the middle of a ferocious, historic blizzard.

Several other rough things happen to Emily during the course of the story, but she never loses heart, or if she does, it's only momentarily, and her common sense and high spirits come to her rescue, as she attempts to clear Jim's name and to free him from prison, even as he's battling an open and shut case against him. Everyone in Sittaford has a secret. I've read the book a good dozen times over the years, and still the utter simplicity, daring, and good humor of Christie's writing dazzles me every time I plunge in again. In some ways, this is the book to recommend to those who don't like Agatha Christie. It has everything Jane Austen has, and a little bit more.

Murder in Desolate Dartmoor Combines Two Intricate Plots.......2005-10-02

The Sittaford Mystery (American title: Murder at Hazelmoor) opens on a wintry afternoon at the large mansion known as Sittaford House. The entertainment for the day is a seance which suggests that Captain Trevelyan, owner of the house, may be dead. The Captain has leased his home to a Mrs. Willett and her daughter Violet. These South African women had been so insistent on spending a typical British winter in the home that they convinced Trevelyan to move into a smaller home in nearby Exhampton. Major Burnaby, a friend of Trevelyan's, is present at the seance. Although he does not believe in spiritualism, he decides to check up on his friend and finds that Trevelyan has been murdered.

From this intriguing beginning the story moves to Trevelyan's sister, two nephews, and niece, all of whom had motive and opportunity to commit the crime. Also, a convict has escaped from a nearby prison and is added to the list of suspects along with the mysterious Willetts.

Christie weaves the murder beautifully into the novel's second plot which is the unexplained presence of the Willetts in Sittaford. This book, notable for its outstanding description of the stark and isolated setting, also introduces a gimmick that Christie will use again in her novella "Three Blind Mice."

When a rocking table spells "M-U-R-D-E-R". .......2005-06-11

Seances were in vogue in the world known to Agatha Christie in the early 1930s. Contemporary novelists and playwrights began to exploit their dramatic potential, and it was in 1931 that Agatha Christie incorporated one into her novel, "The Sittaford Mystery".

This ever-ingenious writer incorporates much else into the novel, of course. There are the "bright young things" of the Tommy and Tuppence variety, who contribute to the sleuthing undertaken by the local constabulary. There is an escaped convict. There is a snow-bound village. There are new residents from New Zealand, whom nobody knows and who may not be what they seem. There is a will, and legacy hunters who might be any of the characters in disguise.

Readers can therefore expect a tightly wrought, engrossing mystery. I was aware while reading it that it had much in common with "Murder at the Vicarage" and then discovered that it was the Christie novel that immediately followed it. Miss Marple is not here, however, nor is Hercule Poirot - both unsuited to trudging through the snow on Dartmoor.

How To Forgive.......2007-03-08

Dr. Janis Abrahms Spring has written a wonderful book here. She talks about refusing to forgive, which breeds bitterness, and Cheap Forgiveness, which is "an inauthentic act of peacekeeping that resolves nothing." This is usually comes about when the hurt party is fearful about losing a relationship with someone who hurt them, or where the hurt person believes quick forgiveness is what's required by their spiritual beliefs. Ultimately, Cheap Forgiveness is a position of weakness. It doesn't build trust in the relationship or heal the hurt person. It just sweeps the offense under the rug.

Genuine Forgiveness, according to Dr. Spring, is the most fulfilling type of forgiveness but requires the participation of both the hurt party and the offender. It's a transaction, and is conditional on repentance and restitution on the part of the offender. In other words, the offender has to acknowledge the pain the hurt party felt, apologize genuinely, non-defensively and responsibly, and work hard to regain the trust of the hurt person. Only then can the hurt party offer the offender Genuine Forgiveness -- a vital building block for future relationship between the two.

But sometimes the offender is not available to participate in forgiveness. She might be dead, or he might be unwilling to admit that there was a wrong committed or deny that he has any responsibility. What then? Dr. Spring offers a third way -- a beautiful, thoughtful, helpful third way -- Acceptance. This is a path toward healing which the hurt party can travel alone. In her book, Dr. Spring suggests ten steps to get to Acceptance of the offense. By working through each of these steps, a person can learn and grow beyond the pain, beyond the hurt, and move on.

After reading this author's "After the Affair" several times, this book is a great next step. She gives solid information, with good direction, without being judgemental. Her case histories are also helpful and poignant.

Living well is the best revenge!.......2006-11-06

Excellent self-help advice about dealing with betrayal from others. It tells you how you can choose alternatives in responding to betrayal other than total forgiveness. Importantly, a person must accept what has happened (i.e., the betrayal), analyze the situation, recognize and choose from alternatives about dealing with the betrayal, and "move on." Revenge or retribution, a natural impulse, is shown to just be counter-productive and prolong the emotional pain. I have found the information in this book very helpful in my own life.

Great Book.......2006-11-04

This is an excellant book for anyone who is trying to work on issues of forgiveness. I have often forgiven too easily, and sometimes not at all. This book offers explanations as to why we do this, and also how to work through these issues, and change where we need to. There are no guilt trips in this book, which I found very helpful.

Written in a compassionate and wise manner intended for those who have experienced a very harrowing situation, this book explores and offers emotionally healthy tools for healing the deepest hurts inflicted by someone very close to us. Based on real-life case stories the book explores in a reality-oriented manner the paradox of true forgiveness that allows deep and complete healing for a person. This is not about blaming the victim or sugar-coated attempts at glossing over mud with whip cream ... it is getting to the core hurt and really mending a broken heart so it is stronger and wiser and safer than before. A must read!

Riveting, Absolutely Riveting!.......2007-04-19

The world knows Denie Linn as the way-cool woman who wrote all those fabulous books about clutter clearing, Feng Shui and building beautiful altars in your home. In this book Denise opens her heart and shares the story of her life...and she does so in a way that will completely blow you away! The title of the book says it all...she has had so many events happen in her life that would have left many people wallowing in self pity and "poor me." But Denise shares her sheer RESILIANCE and ability to take whatever was thrown at her and build on it.

I devoured this book like a novel...it was that mesmerizing and compelling. I literally could not put it down. A couple of times I caught myself wondering how it turned out and I had to laugh, as I KNOW how it turns out. Her writing style is so personal, humble, yet not lessening the impact of the events.

If you are familiar with Denise's work, you probably know she was gunned down and almost killed by a total stanger in a completely random act of violence. Well, that is just the tip of the iceberg on THAT part of her life. What happens after that is even more amazing and in parts shocking. Her story would be an amazing story without that part!

The bravery that Denise exihibts in sharing such a raw and, at times, heartbreaking story just leaves me speechless. From reading her book, I feel that no matter what has happened to me, I can overcome it. No matter what "other people" say or do, all that matters is what is inside ME. WHEW! I could go on and on, but I really just want to implore anyone who might be considering buying this book to just buy it.

I mean it when I say that the story of Denise Linn's life would make a fabulous movie...it is just that empowering.

Therapists rate infidelity as one of the most common and crippling problems they confront. In this workshop, a three-stage, integrative model for helping couples recover from infidelity is presented. In the first stage, hurt and unfaithful partners are helped to make sense out of the avalanche of emotion released by the affair so that they don't feel so crazy, hopeless, or alone. In the second stage, partners are coached to make a thoughtful, not an emotional, decision about whether to recommit. They're encouraged to explore their ambivalence, develop a realistic concept of love, and take responsibility for how their early experience compromised their ability to be satisfied, intimate, and faithful in their adult relationships. In the third stage, a road map is provided for rebuilding trust and sexual intimacy, and learning to forgive. Why some partners forgive too easily while others see forgiveness as impossible is addressed, along with how these issues can be handled clinically. In this professional presentation, Dr. Spring discusses the differences in the responses of the hurt and unfaithful partners to an affair and discusses the role of early childhood experiences in shaping ideas about love. She goes on to discuss how infidelity can help couples face truths about themselves, develop more realistic ideas about love and become more intimately attached. She ends the presentation with comments regarding forgiveness. Dr. Janis Abrahms Spring is one of a few psychologists who has studied and written about infidelity. Over the past 22 years she has developed an extensive practice, and more recently this practice has been comprised mostly of couples struggling with infidelity and what to do about it. Her book After the Affair is based on this experience.

Best cookbook I own.......2007-01-08

I've been a vegan for 3 years and recently came across this wonderful cookbook. It is my new favorite. It is wonderfully complete (so many different cuisines and different types of ingredients ranging from simple to find and prepare to more challenging) and all the recipes I've made have been absolutely delicious. I love that most recipes have pressure cooker and stovetop directions--pressure cookers save so much time! Thanks Lorna Sass for this wonderul book.

I have an entire shelf of cookbooks and whenever I am looking for inspiration I look to Lorna Sass. This is my favorite cookbook. Lorna Sass combines simple ingredients, often pantry staples, to create interesting, easy to prepare, fantastic dishes. For example, I can't tell you how many people have told me they don't like brussel sprouts only to try the vinagerette woked brussel spouts and change their tune. Flavors compliment each other well, dishes are quick to prepare (get a presure cooker and then get the her Vegetarian Cooking Under Pressure too!), and the dishes are healthy.

it took a while, but after purchasing this book, i finally purchased a pressure cooker, and, can i tell you, what a valuble purchase it was! the recipes in this book are easy, healthful, and most amazingly fast. i have made soups that retain amazing flavor and nutitional value and cook in under 10 minutes. of course, you will have to buy a pressure cooker, but it is worth it!

Zero Stars Cookbook without Pictures.......2003-01-18

One expects pictures in a cook book especially if you are looking to learn something new. It's hard know if it is not something you would like to prepare without a presentation. If you are very experienced at cooking great it has lots of pages of text, but I found it useless in helping me with vegetarian cooking. Sorry if it sounds so trivial, but a cookbook with out pictures is no darn good to me. If you disagree, good luck it has lots of pages for you.
