What Tony Hillerman has done for the Navajo tribes of the American Southwest, James Doss seems intent on pulling off for the Utes of Colorado--creating mysteries that are as unique and different as the people and the lands they inhabit. His second book about Ute policeman Charlie Moon is full of dark myth and modern murder, all about the means people invent to fill up the holes in their lives. If you missed it, Doss's equally impressive first book about Moon, The Shaman Sings, is also available in paperback.
Book Description
On Native-American land, in a lonely, mystical place called the Canyon of the Spirit, prize livestock is being slaughtered as part of some strange and secret rite.
Darkness is stalking the reservation, and Ute tribal policeman Charlie Moon fears for his world and his people.
Because now the ritual is spilling human blood.
A terrifying rash of sacrificial murders has left Moon shaken, yet determined to find answers. The bizarre killings have shattered Anglo policeman Scott Parris's belief in a rational, explainable world. But it Daisy Perika, an aging Ute shaman, who holds the key. For only she who communes with the ancient spirits can truly comprehend the evil that has descended upon southwestern Colorado--an evil that is hungry. . . and all too real.

As always I can't recommend these books highly enough. Just plain old good readin'
An excellent Southwestern Indian mystery.......2000-05-08
"The Shaman Laughs" is the second in a series set on an Indian reservation in southwestern Colorado. The shaman is Daisy Perika, an aged Ute woman who lives in a trailer near a sacred canyon. The mystery involves ritual-sacrifice slayings, spilling first animal, then human, blood, and a controversy over the possible disposal of nuclear waste in the sacred canyon. As befits the title, this book is lightened by humorous episodes amid the grim goings-on. Characters include a nervous, prickly FBI special agent named J.E. Hoover; the shaman's malapropistic cousin Gorman; a crooked insurance man with political ambitions; an unfortunate Belgian poet and would-be Indian mystic; the pitikupf, a sort of Ute leprechaun who lives in the sacred canyon; and a collector of antiquities and data who says the ritual killer is an elusive individual he calls "Cain." Who is this devilish Cain? It's up to policemen Scott Parris and Charlie Moon to find out. I thought this book didn't quite measure up to the outstanding "The Shaman Sings" (a hard act to follow), but it's still a good, entertaining read, and I definitely plan to continue on with the series.
Mystery set in the Southern Ute reservation.......1999-03-14
This is the second of a four book series Doss has written. It is part police procedural BUT with some definite twists: Charlie Moon is the big rez cop and his aunt Daisy is the aforementioned shaman. The first chapter is very atmospheric-lots of well written description. The remainder of the book is at times humorous, with dialogue that sounds very natural, lampooning much and lauding little. I especially like the way Moon leisurely (remember we're on rez-time) unravels the mysteries. I suspected about 10 people, discarding some suspects then revisiting them as the story unravels. The ending-especially with regard to the obnoxious Federal agent was perfect!

Ruwenda is a pleasant, peaceful land-but the magic of its guardian, the Archimage Binah, is waning. Binah must pass along her protectorship to the triplet princess of Ruwenda. She bestows upon the infant girls the power of the rare and mystical Black Trillium-badge of the royal house, symbol of an ancient magic. While the sisters blossom into beautiful young women, neighboring Labornok use a dark magician to sunder Binah's protection. As invaders pour into Ruwenda, the Archimage orders the princesses to flee-and changes them to search for three magical talismans which when brought together will be their only chance to regain their kingdom and free its people. Each must accomplish her task separately-and to succeed, each must also confront and conquer the limits of her own soul.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This book was not in the able to be finished category. How did this talent come up with such ordinary junk. Too many cooks in this case, I think.
Time after time when the characters did something I would think 'what the hell is up with that'. Not really a good sign. Many useless princesses.
Disappointing Effort.......2005-06-30
I couldn't get past the prologue. I'm sure this novel improves but read this first line: "In the Eighth Hundred after those of Ruwenda came to rule over the swamp wilderness called the Mazy Mire (though not completely, for they never mastered the intractable Oddlings),..." and also on the first page: "the bog-trotting little Nyssomu and the closely related but more aloof Uisgu (quite nonhuman and therefore clearly designed by Nature to serve their betters)...". When attempting to begin reading any novel (especially the first page), it is essential that the novelist writes with clarity; just look at the names you would have to constantly read throughout this book! Check out the tribes' names: Wyvilo; Glismak; Skritek (also called Drowners) and Vespi! There are just too many ridiculous names to bother with, and this doesn't include place names. I just didn't care after three pages.
Sadly, I had been looking for this book for 6 months ( I didn't have the courage to buy it on Amazon) - and for good reason. I hope this review prevents any perspective buyer from making a mistake in buying this amatuerish garbage.
Great read !.......2003-01-16
This book is truly what introduced me to these superb authors .It's definately one of the best books ever written .Magical ,interesting ,fast moving,it has all the qualities to a good book .I adored the creatures they invented ,the Oddlings ,the tree varts ,the Glismak ,the Skritek ,and everything else .They develope a wondreful feeling that I've barely felt before . Here is the plot :Three princesses are born in Ruwenda :Haramis ,smart and leader -like and heir to the throne ,Kadiya ,firey tempered but an amazing huntress, and Anigel, sweet ,timid ,and loving .Each of them is bestowed with the amulet of the black trillium by the Archmage Binah .When the princesses are young women ,the neighboring country of Labornok invades.Haramis ,Kadiya ,and Anigel are split up and sent to look for the magical talismans that will save their country :The Three Winged Circle ,the Three Lobed Burning Eye ,and the Three Headed Monster .But if the sorcerer you uses the king of Labornok as a puppet finds them first ,they will surely be destroyed.
Pure Genius.......2002-09-12
I loved this book. It has a consistency rarely found in fantasy stories, creating a realistic world with believable characters, boundaries, and the vivid writing style invokes images in ones head that are hard to forget. I read this book a couple of years ago and just thought about it recently, but couldnt for the life of me remember what it was called! I finally found it! Hooray! Anyone who likes fantasy should *read it now*!
Well Worth It........2001-12-31
The trio authors Marion Zimmer Bradley, Julian May, and Andre Norton have created a world so enchanting that I had to read non-stop from beginning to end. Action began from the first page as the triplet sisters are forced to split up and embark on their own journeys, and conquer themselves.
The story is fun, beleivable, and full of mystery surrounding the ancient citizens of the planet, the vanished ones. It is fairly easy to read because the authors did not add too much description, or confusing topics, which often take away the pleasure of reading.
The charcters came to life for me because their personalities were so human. Also, although I am not a feminist, I enjoyed the fact that the main characters Kadiyah, Haramis, and Anigel are women, which is a good change from many other fantasy stories that have either men as the lead characters or super-strong and unrealistic women running around and beating everyone up, (*cough*Xena-wannabees*cough), excuse me.
Black Trillium has all the elements that make an excellent story. The only problem that I had with it is that the ending seemed to be a little slapped together because it was so short.
This is when all three sisters confront The bad guy, Orogastus, together for the first time. About two short chapters later, the story ends. This dosen't create any loose ends, but it does take some of the momentum that the story had built up.

Yep, it works!.......2007-09-19
I bought this for my mom, who was diagnosed with diabetes. She said this was incredibly informative and easy to read (as an example, she found out that a baked potato is the sugar-equivalent of eating several dozen tablespoons of sugar, or something wild like that). Anyhoo, she never heard of this book until I bought it for her and she has since given it to famiy members and friends to read. She has even highlighted passages. To me, those are pretty good indications that this book is a smart purchase.
Looking great.......2007-09-04
So much advice about diets and losing weight is out there on the market that you don't know which expert advice is really worth following. Should you look for food with less calories, less fat , less cabohydrates, less what? Sugar Busters clarifies the problem of why most of us are overweight and gives, in my opinion, an understandable and logical explanation to our misgivings while indicating to us which foods are most acceptable for those wanting to lose weight and which foods are anathema, i.e. don't even think of eating them. A surprisingly good, readable, enjoyable and informative book. Worth the money and time spent on reading it!
Rowmaniac.......2007-07-19
I've always been a healthy eater, attempting to choose low fat foods and healthy portions, but after a few years of decreased activity I was 65 pounds overweight. I read this book, and a light went on for me: it was not how much or little I was allowing myself to eat, but rather the type of foods I was eating. Everything set forth in this book made good medical sense to me. Even my doctor had told me, "If the cavemen did not have the food you are about to eat, choose something else. Enough of all the processed foods!" I should have listened sooner.
The book sets for the medical reasoning behind why some of us gain weight despite eating what others might think is a "healthy" diet. Minor substitutions and changes in what type of sugars I eat and when I eat them has helped me lose 60 pounds and keep it off!
The wonderful aspect of Sugar Busters is that the diet is a "lifelong way of eating" rather than some fad. In fact, this diet is prescribed as a medically sound way to prevent or control diabetes, which has become almost an epidemic in America. I have spent the last year using the tools I learned from this easy reading book to change my life, my body, and my outlook. People now want me to tell them how I got so healthy, while never wearing the frown of deprivation that other diets would put on my face. This eating plan has changed my life. I am not a religious person, but if I were, I'd want to preach about the merits of following this sound plan and getting a healthy body and mind in the process.
If you read this book, take the time to think about the concepts set forth, and make the easy changes to implement the principles in the book, you cannot avoid losing weight. It just works. I have never been hungry for a minute, and those 60 pounds are not going to return. I am 100% confident that this is the plan I have always been searching for.
Read the book and go for it!!! All you have to lose are those extra pounds.

Book Description
The Foxfire group are dedicated to preserving and recording the traditions of America's Appalachian area, and this book of over 500 recipes, with black and white photography of the people of the area, is a classic from them. The food is nutritious, easy to prepare, and totally unpretentious, including recipes for potato candy, cry-baby cookies, lime pickles, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
A DELICIOUS READ - FOOD AND HISTORY AND CULTURE, WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?.......2007-08-23
This is a great addition to the Foxfire book family. On a personal note, I was raised on many of the recipes noted here. The food of the Missouri/Arkansas Ozarks is quite similar to the Appalachians. This book gives a great representation of the "way it was," and the delightful writing and personal stories and interviews just add to the fun and usefulness of this work. One needs to note though, that this is not a "cookie cutter" cook book. If you are looking for a recipe book with standard, boring directions, then you need to probably look elsewhere. There are dozens and dozens of that type of book out there and they are not all that difficult to find. No one book can do it all...that fact is pretty much a no brainer. This is a history book, a book about a vanished or vanishing culture, even more than it is a cook book. This is quite important to remember.
That being said, this work is an absolute delight to read. From the preparation of the animal being cooked all the way to the making of sauerkraut, the book is filled with wonderful facts and insights to a time long past. One of the things that I found most interesting was the ingenious methods used to be sure that everything, and I mean everything, was used. These folks of past generations did not leave much to waste.
The reading is easy, but do be warned, that you must get use to the dialect used here. It may throw some off, but once you get use to it, it adds so much to the story being told. The book has plenty of black and white photographs, gives around 300 recipes and absolutely hundreds of bits of trivia. This is one of those works you will probably want to add to your library because it is one that deserves rereads. Highly recommend this one along with the entire series.
Excellent book.......2007-05-13
If a person has read the "Foxfire" series of books, they will enjoy this compilation of all the recipes from each of the books. The book is very well put together with lots of pictures and intersting facts from the people who gave the recipes. Enjoy!
LOVED IT.......2007-05-12
THIS BOOK HAD LOTS OF GREAT OLD FASHIONED COOKING SEGMENTS. I WAS WELL PLEASED WITH IT.
Sad Disappointment.......2003-03-05
I am a serious cook with a large cookbook library. I am a Southerner who made my first biscuits and gravy at age 5. This book is a not-so-well done re-hash of other Foxfires and sorely disappointing. It is difficult to use as a cookbook-more poignant than useful. Also a tad light on recipes. A much better book from North Georgia (Southern Appalachia, like the Foxfire series) is Smokehouse Ham, Spoon Bread & Scuppernong Wine: The Folklore and Art of Southern Appalachian Cooking. I use this one a lot, enjoy reading the stories, and frequently give it as gift to visiting Yankees. Plus it has the wit, charm, and authenticity so sadly missing from the Foxfire Cookbook.
A book I use a lot.......2003-01-08
Got this as a gift and what a treat it is proving to be. It is a book that is really helping me broaden my homesteading skills and I adore the running dialogue and photographs that show the how to's and bring back wonderful memories of growing up.
The recipes are good and easy and delicious and I like the discussion of how to dress out livestock and wild game as well as how to make crock pickles and things like sauerkraut which I love doing. I also like, but some people may be turned off by the meat section that deals with waste not want not, and how to make use of most of the animal one slaughters. Something my family knew well when I was growing up.
This is also a good book is someone simply wants to learn about how self sufficiency works and how most people used to live, especially in rural areas.
It is my favorite and most usable of all the Foxfire books.

This is like sitting with great-grandma while she cooks.......2001-02-27
What makes this book so special is the narratives with each recipe. It is as though you are sitting in a West Virginia or Carolina kitchen with family long-gone, listening, as they tell how to make that special family recipe. As I have researched my family roots, I've often wished I could have known some of my ancestors from this part of the country, what their stories were, their everyday experiences. This book is a jewel and the recipes are absolute treasures. The memories it holds are a bit of disappearing Americana. This is comfort food at its best and a sampling of the simple lives and times that brought it to us. The canning recipes are some of the best you'll find anywhere. It even has recipes for squirrel, possum and other mountain delicacies that I've heard in family stories (but oooh, who'd want to eat them now?!) We've laughed and sighed as we poured over each page, each story. This will be a book you'll cherish.
