Fans of Martha Grimes will know that the Lamorna Wink must be a British pub, and one to which Superintendent Richard Jury or his aristocratic sidekick Melrose Plant can be counted on to repair in the process of solving a mystery or two. This time, with Jury off in Ireland, Plant takes the starring role. His vacation in picturesque Bletchley on the Cornwall coast is very nearly ruined by the coincidental appearance of his dreaded Aunt Agatha. Ironically, however, he is drawn to the plight of a young man, Johnny Wells, whose favorite aunt has disappeared suddenly without trace. In spite of Agatha, Plant decides to lease a house owned by an American millionaire whose two grandchildren died tragically on the beach a few years before. Within a day or so, a new dead body is found in neighboring Lamorna: that of Sada Colthorp, a young woman who had lived in the area but left to dabble in porn movies. Plant and divisional police commander Brian Macalvie (Help the Poor Struggler) believes there's a link between Colthorp and the missing Chris Wells. When the pieces start to come together (and a fast string of violence ensues), Jury makes a token appearance to tie up the remaining loose ends. But the day really belongs to Plant, who is becoming much more than an accidental detective, and to Macalvie, a character with an appeal that may eclipse even Jury's.
As always, Grimes provides comic relief at the expense of a tight plot by checking in with the myriad other characters who populate Plant's Long Piddleton and Jury's London. The impatient reader may wonder when, if ever, Plant and friends will cease their juvenile heckling of Vivian Rivington's Italian count. The final explanation of the children's deaths, however, will leave the most stoic mystery fan feeling distinctly queasy. That Grimes can so effectively amuse, shock, intrigue, and even irritate after 16 books bodes well for the continuing life of the series. --Barrie Trinkle
Book Description
While Richard Jury has been sent on a dead end chase by Chief Superintendent Racer, Melrose Plants heads for Cornwall to take up temporary residence in an old Cornish manor. Unfortunately, Lady Ardry boards BritRail and follows him to Bletchley House, which sits high on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea like the set of a romantic old film.
Bletchley Village is dominated by a stately home turned Hospice, thanks to the billionaire, Morris Bletchley, the American owner of a chain of fast food eateries. He is also the grandfather of two small children who died mysteriously at Bletchley House years before.
While having tea in the Woodbine Tea Room with Agatha, Plant is served by Johnny Wells, a young lad who manages a smile despite the disappearance of his beloved aunt, Chris. Seduced by the whole notion of the disappearance of aunts, Melrose calls Brian Macalvie, Commander of the Devon and Cornwall police, to find Macalvie is in the near-by Hamlet of Lamorna Cove, where the body of a woman is found in the surrounding Bluebell Wood. Macalvie and Plant repair to Lamorna's only pub, The Wink, but have barely sampled the local ale before another murder occurs, this one at the hospice.
Macalvie's past, Plant's past, and the tragic past of the Bletchleys, converge at the end with Richard Jury, who comes to set things right.
"One of the finest voices of our time. Martha Grimes is poetry." --Patricia Cornwell
"One of the established masters of the genre." --Newsweek
"Grimes nimbly orchestrates the suspense, giving the reader a sense of impending disaster."--The New York Times
Customer Reviews:
awful.......2007-09-21
Really awful ! I do resent the late introduction of the snuff film plot. I never would have started it in the first place . I am so mad at myself for having read it all the way through, but I'll spare anyone else from reading my copy. It's in the trash.
Dark Entry in Series.......2007-03-26
The Lamorna Wink, by Martha Grimes, is set in a desolate location and centers around a murder (or more), as per usual. The book's other main plots deal with the mysterious disappearance of two children years ago, and the childhood of Melrose Plant. Richard Jury is not featured in this book, but he does factor in prominently at the end.
This book really focuses on Melrose Plant. Readers of the series will be delighted to find that many questions about Melrose are answered, including why he walked away from his title. [Though he still uses the title of Lord Ardry when it suits the instant case.]
Although I find Aunt Agatha annoying, so does Melrose and that is what makes her character fun.
Macalvie is featured heavily in this novel, and it is entertaining to find out how Macalvie and Melrose interact without Jury present.
This is easily the bleakest, and most depressing novel in the Jury/Plant series. The novel is very-well written and shows and author at the peak of her abilities.
Outstanding series, author and book.......2007-02-09
Martha Grimes has created a rich and detailed world for her readers that allows both the casual and committed fan to dive right in. More than many of her previous novels, The Lamorna Wink, exploits her natural abilities as a writer. Grimes not only fleshes out her recycled characters, she creates wonderful new ones that play an essential role in the mysteries she writes. A wonderful book by a wonderful author.
Good Grief! It's Agatha!.......2007-01-30
Grimes seems to have somehow forgotten connections and motivation. She gives no motive for the first murder(s) except one which was discovered well after the fact(s) of such.
And would someone please kill Aunt Agatha. She's consumed more fairy cakes than I can count and I don't even know what they are. And it is so Boring's to read about it over and over and over again.
Grimes has created a wonderful character in Melrose Plant and she should "run with" him. Jury is so sunk in a mire (or fen). Even Wiggins is more interesting than Jury and I want to smack Wiggins a lot of the time. I can also do without CarolAnne, Mrs. Wasserman, and Stan Keeler(& his dog).
This "series" has run its course unless it takes a big turn.
5++ for style, but only a 3 overall .......2006-11-09
I've read most of Ms Grimes earlier Richard Jury mysteries, but finally gave up on them because I found the central male and female characters tiresome after a while. I kept wanting to say, "Get a life, or least get some serious counseling!" I'm pleased to say that Jury puts in only a brief appearence towards the end of the book, while the much more charismatic and entertaining Melrose Plant helds center stage with his wit and humor intact--an earlier novel had left me fearing he too was about to become tiresome, but I see this is not the case. So far as I can see from the narrative, Jury's appearence at all seems to have been dictate simply by the fact that the series is the "Inspector Jury Series."
I have no clue what the time element was to which another reveiwer referred; so far as I could see the the temporal aspects of the author's story seemed plausible. The sequential aspects definitely took a major back seat to the overall plot of the story for me. I have to say, I enjoy the lady's writing style; she definitely creates a sense of environement and action. As long as I stay within the bounds that she has set and don't ask any questions, I enjoy myself. Once free of the spell however, I ask myself, "Could this even have happened?" In this case I have to say, "No way. Not in a million years." It's not that I cannot see this type of thing occuring, aweful as it was, it's that I can't believe it would have happened to those it did and for the reasons it did. That left me feeling that the book just didn't live up to expectation.
I give the author 5++ for her style, but only a 3 for the overall effect of the book.

Temporarily Planted in Cornwall.......2006-01-29
This reading by Donada Peters brings great emotion and immediacy to this dark novel. I suspect you will like the story better if you listen to this recording rather than read the book.
Those who love Richard Jury should be warned that he plays a tiny role in this story, barely appearing before the book is two-thirds over. Instead, The Lamorna Wink places Melrose Plant at the center of the action and most of the detecting is done by Brian Macalvie, a division commander in the Devon and Cornwall police who you may remember from Help the Poor Struggler. There's another warning that you should heed. This book contains one of the most disturbing fictional scenes about children that I have ever read.
Melrose wants to escape from Long Piddleton and Aunt Agatha, but can't seem to shake her when he looks into renting a mansion on the sea in Cornwall. He finds an empty home that suits the bill and soon learns about the tragic deaths of two young children that have led the family to abandon their home. Aunt Agatha decides to join him as she pursues a sudden interest in a real estate sales career. Avoiding Aunt Agatha provides the comic relief for much of this story.
Moving in, Melrose soon finds himself in the middle of new mysteries when the aunt of a local lad, Johnny Wells, unexpectedly disappears. Soon thereafter a woman with a mysterious past, Sada Colthorp, is found dead and suspicion starts to be cast on the aunt.
Because there are "aristos" and rich Americans involved, Macalvie asks Plant to get involved so he can pick up the inside scoop that won't be shared with the police. Melrose obliges . . . but doesn't really find out very much.
Sergeant Wiggins is recruited to help Macalvie and has a marvelous cameo role where his hypochondria and obsessive note-taking combine to help him spot the key facts.
Events later begin to take many unexpected turns and twists, and doubt is cast of the motives of many of the characters.
Ms. Grimes also gives us an amusing secondary story line about Vivian Rivington's plans to marry her "Count Dracula" as her friends like to call him. Clearly, this is an attempt to lighten an otherwise dark story. Sometimes the diversions are welcome, and other times they are not. I suspect this novel would have worked better as unrelieved darkness.

If you've ever loved the wrong man.......2001-10-14
This book is shattering and lyrical. It manages to conjure up such precise emotion that you get lost within it's language.
This book will grip you unlike any other and it's poetry will entrance you, so that you will re-read it till you know it by heart. This is a story that will haunt you,it will make you yearn to meet a man like Kim and yearn even more so to know what 'soul-lust' actually feels like. You should read this if you've ever walked the wrong path and known that it was the only way that could save you.
Lukewarm, with a vague ending and too many loose ends........1997-11-19
Excellent premise: In love with a murderer. Gradually, things grow tamer and more whimsical, until the story is muddled and meandering. The ending leaves too many things unresolved. I found that the first half of the book was intriguing. Kim was a murderer, and he draws Lynn in. This alone lends him a certain dark mystique. The rest of the book seems to be an attempt to justify his crime, when no justification is required. (or even desired!) The lyric richness of the novel is what saves it. Ms. Neimark's descriptions and style are like elegant poetry with the occasional stunning twist.

An unfinished story.......2006-08-05
The book wasn't at all hard to read. It is interesting enough, although it is uber cheesy in some area's and who ever edited it was on crack. On the bright side it is not one of those books where the relationship between the two main characters takes the entire book to develop, it develops quickly and gets on with the story, which was refreshing.
The story is about two young girls, Manilla and Ginny who are going to a prestigious college in bumfuk somewhere. First they must deal with the college's bigotry when they are "outed" and then one gets bitten and transforms and the other is trying to support this carnivorous lover and adjust to this new lifestyle. With the help of Manilla's advisor, it's possible that Ginny and Manilla might escape the clutches of Darson, the obsessive, powerful vampire, Darson, who wants to possess Ginny. But the problem is the book doesn't have an ending so poor Ginny and Manilla are in a perpetual limbo . . . I guess you can make up your own.
Oh my goddess... it's so bad........2002-03-28
I really tried to like this book, and I just couldn't. Then I tried not to loathe it, and I didn't succeed with that one either. The plot, the writing, the characters--there's just nothing to like. It's painfully bad but not even so-bad-it's-funny. Oh dear.
Best Book ever.......1999-05-27
This is the best book ever all i can say is to read it right away

A gripping story based on the Siegfried and Brunnhilde tale from Nordic myth.
Sigurd has a fabulous but frightening future predicted. To start with, he must leave everything he knows to go and fight a dragon and from there descend into the Underworld. Sounds bad enough, but when you know that the dragon lives on a futuristic, industrially-ruined moonscape that was once Hampstead Heath, the scene is set for a brutal fight on an epic scale. Unhappily for Sigurd, he meets the love of his life in the underworld, and his efforts to rescue his lover will cause heartache and grief for both of them, and anyone who ever meets them.

Worthwhile, but Had Hoped All the Works Would Be as Good as the Title Story.......2007-08-20
The writer is a white speaker of Zulu and Afrikaans, who was born in 1918 and grew up in Zululand, Natal, South Africa. In adult life, he worked for the state railway and provincial government and later as a mining engineer. In the 1970s he retired, emigrated to Canada and began writing fiction. Most or all of the pieces in this collection appear to have been written within a decade of 1987, when his book was published.
The title story, "Bloodsong," was something I'd seen previously in an anthology, the Heinemann Book of Contemporary South African Short Stories. Set in Zululand and narrated by an adult describing an event from his boyhood, it tied together youth, a bit of history, the meeting of people from two cultures, Afrikaans and Zulu, respect for another's customs, and a bittersweet ending, in an engrossing way. I liked the story so much I ordered the present collection.
Expectations may have been too high, because I didn't find another story that struck me as much as "Bloodsong." The other pieces were sensitive to the relations between people from different backgrounds and moral choices they faced, and described incidents and interactions well. But for me no other story had the depth, resonance or such a satisfying development and ending.
In one story in this collection set in the nearer past, "A Farm at Raraba," the white narrator describes time spent as a soldier on special reconnaissance in Angola, where briefly he came to see his opposite, a black rebel, as human, not just an enemy. In "Death of the Nation," the white narrator describes his experience with his black servant from his boyhood, who became a friend but grew up, refused to accept society's restrictions and eventually escaped abroad.
A few other pieces, set entirely in the present, cover black/white relations in a slightly less intimate way, in the bush, in an office, outside a prison. One's about the pressure brought to bear by a special investigator against a white woman who helped her black friend flee abroad. In all of these, the social reality of apartheid is presented: police supervision, trials, riots, soldiers shooting demonstrators, relations between people threatened or destroyed. In a number of them, the narrator or protagonist is presented with the necessity of choosing to either help a black friend or stranger, or not, which effectively would mean betraying them.
Other stories focus mainly on relations in a small-town community, and are set in the past. Another piece, differing from the rest, takes the form of an ethnographic report on a legend narrated by an old black woman, a keeper of the tales of her tribe, which tells how fierce warriors became docile farmers. Maybe it sets up a contrast with the historic past to show how greatly the tribe's life has changed under white rule, and how little of the real past has been captured in scholarly accounts.
Taking the stories together, maybe one could say many of them convey the atmosphere in South Africa at a very difficult time. They were created by a writer who might in part be looking back over his own life, who saw moral choices forced on people who lived in his country, and who found some beautiful things from boyhood to describe.

Book Description
Bestselling author Melody Beattie returns with a message of hope for difficult times, offering a blueprint for navigating the path of choice, from our everyday concerns to our moments of deepest despair.
This unique collection of profoundly moving personal stories and inspirational prose demonstrates the capacity of the human spirit to overcome suffering through the cultivation of awareness and acceptance, heart and vulnerability, service and surrender. Our ability to determine our most authentic choices and live a life of greater freedom is closer than we think.
Customer Reviews:
Melody is one wise woman.......2007-04-04
A series of short chapters, most of them just three or four pages, gives us meditational gems in Melody Beatty's characteristic warm, fearless and personal style. Each one is the personal story of a real person whose experience illuminates a facet of a learning experience. One of my favorites is her account of her visit to the dying Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, herself a pioneer in the understanding of humane death. In just a few words, she paints an unforgettable picture of a life well lived. The author's immediate and engaging persona shines through, like a trusted friend, telling us that if we keep moving on our path, no matter what the obstacles, all will be well.
choices.......2005-08-22
I'm a big fan of Melody Beattie's "thought for the day" type books, so this was disappointing. It was a quick read and fundamentally great words for better "choices". It repeated itself ALOT. But, of course some of us need to be reminded over and over....
Something For Everyone.......2003-09-23
This is a book of short essays written for the average person who doesn't care or simply doesn't know the psycho-babble terms written by professionals that only other professionals can comprehend.
No matter what your life experiences or level of education there simply has to be a short story that hits home . I have read many books on relationships, psychology etc, and this book is just great.
For someone just getting started in self help and rebuilding
relationships and personal growth this is a great book.
Something for everyone.......2002-07-27
Choices is a series of short essays, each two or three pages long, each illustrating a point the author wants to make. Some are New Age-y: A woman closing her business is surprised when someone says, "I feel that I should speak to you..." Others are more straightforward and down-to-earth.
I couldn't relate to all -- even most -- of the stories here. If you haven't had the experience, the story is meaningless. Several involve getting tough about relationships.
Two essays were especially powerful: "She saw a monster in her bedroom" is about a woman who realizes she must leave to escape a "monster" husband -- at age seventy-one. Beattie concludes, "It's hard to be a newcomer at anything."
"He had to backtrack" is the story of a young delinquent who turns his life around after a gifted counselor roots out long-buried feelings.
I see each episode as a turning point rather than a choice: each time the protagonist hit bottom, his or her life changed. It's not always about choices: the delinquent doesn't face a crossroads.
I'd probably recommend this book to clients whose lives felt out of control, who wanted role models and examples of taking charge, or who wanted to understand the concept of change.
One negative: Each chapter ends with a small lesson that could be omitted. It's overkill. The book's power comes from the stories and the way Beattie tells them. The lessons themselves are not particularly new or original. Leave them out.
Timeless lessons from author who writes like an old friend........2002-05-20
Like Billy Pilgrim, the protagonist in Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five, Melody Beattie has come unstuck in time. When Billy Pilgrim ceases to experience his life in chronological order, he learns from the invisible inhabitants of the planet Trafalmadore that life is a collection of moments, and that our job is to concentrate on the good ones and try to ignore the bad.
Melody Beattie is wiser than a Trafalmadorian. With Choices, she takes us on a journey, skipping from one moment to the next, in her own life and the lives of many others. And whether the moment is about celebrating a victory, dealing with a child's death, jumping out of an airplane, taking a horseback riding lesson, or simply being indecisive, Melody will convince you that every moment is important, and that every moment holds the potential for choice.
As a psychotherapist and author (Embracing Fear, HarperSanFrancisco 2002) I frequently emphasize to clients and readers that there is an important difference between being "in control," and being "in charge." Melody's new book is a wonderful collection of lessons about how to be in charge even when we seemingly control nothing.
These lessons are not really unstuck in time; they transend time. They are timeless, and well worth reading.

Customer Reviews:
No thanks.......2002-11-29
No thank you, I won't be having seconds. I already own the original Ebony cookbook so I picked this one up with high expectations. What a let down! The New Ebony cookbook is full of bland recipes that I will never try. Considering that the orignal book is a treasury of Americas finest Black cooking there is no excuse for this new version to be so poor. Stick with the original.
Okay, but a real disappointment.......2002-03-06
This book was a huge disappointment. I have Frieda Knight's wonderful _Dinner with a Dish_ (from Ebony), so really looked forward to this one. But it was so coldly written, with no introductions, anecdotes, or descriptions of the recipes. In the aforementioned _Dinner with a Dish_, it tells how a minted pea recipe became very popular after someone mistakenly used mint tea instead of water to cook some peas. I like that sort of intro/description, and missed it here. For example, all recipe collections include some that are quick-and-easy, some that use up ingredients we keep on hand, some that are very cheap, some that are out-of-this-world delicious show-stoppers, some that have sentimental value, etc. -- and it is important to know which are which before wasting your time and effort. (For example, I'm a northerner, and have never seen or tasted collard greens. A recipe describing them as delectable would tempt me to locate and try them -- but, without such a description, I have no way of knowing if the recipe is listed because collard greens are readily available, or because they taste good.) is book doesn't provide any clues about time or effort involved or results expected. I was horribly disappointed, and will be returning it.
However, I gave it three stars rather than one, since the above criteria may not matter to all people.
charlotte knows her stuffings!!!.......2000-08-26
this cookbook is perfect for cooks like me who really don't know how to cook!!! the language is plain, the ingrediants are simple, and the results.....for me... is usually tasty!!!
the timely tips in the back of the book are especially helpful. they teach me how to make substitutions, when i don't have certain ingrediants the recipes require.
i also found this to be the perfect cookbook for my 14 year old son to learn the basics of functioning in the kitchen.
This book belongs in EVERY kitchen!.......2000-04-26
As a novice cook, I really do not prepare a lot of meals. When I got this book, all of the recipes looked so appetizing and easy to follow I couldn't wait to get started! The coconut shrimp, cajun fried chicken, skillet greens with balsamic vinegar, and brown sugar pound cake are my favorites! This is a great book I would recommend to anyone who wants to spice up their kitchen!
delicious!.......2000-04-25
Delicious is the word for the easy-to-follow recipes in the New EBONY Cookbook. I loved Charlotte Lyon's new twist on soul food classics. Cajun Fried Chicken, sauteed collard greens, sweet potato salad, black-eyed pea salad, and walnut sweet potato pie. Recently I got lots of compliments for a brunch I prepared using the recipes for Fresh Tangerine Mimosa, Shrimp-Filled Deviled Eggs, Champagne-Mushroom Chicken, Stir-Fried Asparagus, Virginia Ham Biscuits and Buttermilk Pie with Mixed Berry Compote. The color photos help inspire you to try the recipes. The timely tips at the end are also helpful.
