A bit scattered with too many characters.......2007-06-16
There were good points to this book, and bad points. I didn't exactly like it all that much, but I didn't really dislike. Mostly, I just thought it could have been written better.
Plot-wise, it was a good book. I enjoyed the storyline and the main characters; a fairly typical good vs evil / serial killer story. Barton did an excellent job of keeping you guessing about the bad guy. She gives you a number of suspects and I could never quite figure out which on it was because none were overly obvious. It kept you into the book and kept you wondering. The main secondary characters of Jazzy and Jacob were good too. I enjoyed the friendship between Jazzy, Jacob, and Genny.
The down side of this book was that - in my opinion - Barton spent too much time on the other numerous characters, at a sacrifice to Dallas and Genny. There were just so many characters she dumped into the book, some entirely inconsequential, and some as potential bad guys. Some were necessary, but Barton still spent too many pages on them. Because of that, I didn't feel like Dallas and Genny got enough attention. There wasn't much discovery time with them. It was like there entire romance was built on an intangible connection that both felt. I wanted more quality getting-to-know-you moments with them. All the asides just made the book a bit scattered and my attention kept wandering.
So all in all, The Fifth Victim is an okay read, something you wouldn't mind taking out from the library, but not something to rush right out and get. There are 2 connected books, but as yet, I haven't decided if I'm going to read them.
Helps to be a fan of paranormal.......2006-03-10
When a ritualistic killing similar to his niece's murder happens in a small Tennessee town, FBI agent Dallas Sloan travels to investigate and falls for the woman who "saw" the gruesome murder. He has done a lot of research on the killings - so far 20 victims have been found - five in each of four different cities, with the fifth killing being more sadistic.
Genny Madoc is Cherokee Pointe's town oddity. She inherited the "sight" from her grandmother, enabling her to see the crimes while they are in progress, and occasionally see into the killer or victim's minds. While Dallas does not believe in this hocus pocus, he cannot deny that Genny's visions have elicited results and additional clues. Working with her cousin, Jacob, the town sheriff, Dallas discovers that there is indeed a link to the fifth victims, and that Genny may be on the killer's hit list.
The murders are sadistic and chilling, and nothing is left to the imagination. There are many potential suspects on the list - it is up to Dallas to identify the culprit and save the woman he loves. I thought that the police relied too much on Genny's visions to solve the crime - made them a little inept. And since I am not a fan of paranormal stories, it was hard to suspend belief at times. But Jackson is a first rate storyteller.
The Fifth Victim.......2005-09-02
This book was interesting. I like how it keeps you on the edge the whole time where you are guessing who the killer is and who will be the next victim. I had figured out why, and who the 5th victim was before the end. I recommend it to anyone that likes mystery/romance books. Just don't read the second one 1st like I did, which I didn't know that it was a triogy until I got to the end of the book.
Not spellbound.......2004-10-31
This story probably had all the ingredients to be a suspense, but missed it's mark. Give me Pat Cornwell and Kay Scarpetta any day. It never ceases to amaze me even when they are positive the murderer is out to get a certain person that the murderer manages to waltz right in and kidnap her. Besides the trusting deputy guarding the door where were all Genny's other watchful friends? But then where would the climactic ending be? Not interested in following any more of these characters in the sequel, thank you
Made a believer out of me........2004-04-05
I am a male who enjoys a good mystery. I had never read a book by Beverly Barton, not because she is a woman (I love J.A. Jance and other female authors), but because her books were listed as "romance." "The Fifth Victim" was a great read. As a result, I ordered "Grace Under Fire" but put off reading it because the description emphasised romance.
I just finished "Grace Under Fire" and am ordering some more Barton books. Great reads!!!

Book Description
When Odessa Blackburn is three years old, she sees her grandmother for the last time, and so begins her story as the fifth born of eight children in a troubled family. Molested by her father, Odessa is also the sole witness to a murder he commits. Her mother guards both secrets and joins her husband in ostracizing their fifth born from the rest of her siblings.
As Odessa grows, so do her troubles. She ultimately separates herself from her parents and siblings into a new reality that prompts memory and revelation. Her choices for survival provoke an outcome that will forever alter the carefully maintained lies of her childhood.
Zelda Lockhart's Fifth Born is lyrically written, poignant and powerful in its exploration of how secrets can tear families apart and unravel people's lives. Set in rural Mississippi and St. Louis, Missouri, Fifth Born is a story of loss and redemption, as Odessa walks away from those who she believes to be her kin to discover the meaning of family.

fifth and fabulous.......2007-06-27
"Fifth Born" was one of the best books I read recently. It did remind me of Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eyes", as another reviewer mentioned, except I think I enjoyed it more. I loved how the end of the book came together. It brought a tear to my eye. I to am from Mississippe and the trips they made back south each summer reminded me of my childhood. Odessa's love for her grandmother brought back memories of my favorite aunt. I will be looking forward to Zelda Lockhart's next piece of work.
A Must Read! .......2007-06-12
Author Zelda Lockhart takes us on a journey into the complicated life of the Blackburn/Lacey family. The novel is narrated by the fifth born Blackburn Odessa. Odessa lives the childhood that begins nice and somewhat normal and after the death of her maternal grandmother life becomes unbearable and pure hell. Odessa is a charactor that is hard to forget with circumstances that are hard to swallow. There are many times in the book when you literally want to scream outloud "DO SOMETHING!" I wanted Odessa to find her voice and use it. Overall this is a great quick read. The plot though depressing is still very intresting. Very well written. I am in hopes there is a part two coming soon.
jFifth Born.......2007-02-15

The World Fantasy Award winning-anthology Dreaming Down-Under manages the impressive feat of being both a definitive Golden Age compilation and a new wave groundbreaker. This is because Australian speculative fiction has entered a golden age at the turn of the millennium, and because the editors of Dreaming Down-Under, Jack Dann and Janeen Webb, asked contemporary authors born or living in Australia to contribute the best speculative fiction they could create. The 30 contributors have lived up to the challenge, producing stories that are uniformly literary, frequently ambitious, and sometimes disturbing. The stories range all across imaginative literature, from revisionist myth to hardboiled cyberpunk, from paranoid horror to imaginary-world fantasy. Dreaming Down-Under may reshape the future of speculative fiction not only in Australia, but around the world.
In addition to its generous 200,000-plus words of original fiction, the anthology contains 20,000 words of interesting and informative nonfiction. The editors introduce Dreaming Down-Under with a discussion of the current antipodean ferment and a short history of Australian science fiction; they also provide each story with an individual introduction. Each author provides an afterword for his or her story. Fittingly, Dreaming Down-Under also has a passionate preface by Harlan Ellison, who edited the legendary Dangerous Visions anthology series (1969-1973) that changed SF forever. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
Despite not having been published outside of Australia, Dreaming Down-Under won the 1999 World Fantasy Award for Best Anthology, and stories from its pages have appeared in many Year's Best anthologies. Now we in this hemisphere can enjoy this excellent anthology without a round-the-globe trip.
Internationally acclaimed author Harlan Ellison recently declared that this is the Golden Age of Australian Science Fiction. Dreaming Down-Under showcases this Golden Age with thirty-one exciting original stories by both acknowledged masters and hot new writers from--where else?--Down-Under.

Australian SF Reader.......2007-08-01
An eclectic anthology I suppose you could say, with the second volume better than this, the first one. (3.87 average versus 3.56, or 3.71 for the lot, if you like), which places it ahead of the various McNamara offerings, by just a little. There is a useful introduction, with a bit of history there, although, for an Australian volume quite a bit of time wasted on Harlan Ellison worship, as far as the intro goes. Science fiction, fantasy and horror to be found here.

Blunt cutting edge.......2003-03-14
I bought this anthology that was advertised in such glowing terms. I must say I was disappointed in stories that are meant to represent the 'wild side' of Australian Fiction. None of the stories in this book really left a lasting impression of this reader.
In fact I don't understand why some of these stories were published at all. Some of the stories Ma Rung, The Body Politic, seemed to be predictable cliches, that take overdone themes and don't take them in a new direction. Other writers such as Sara Douglas and Stephen Dedman, who I have enjoyed in other anthologies do not present there best work here. To me the stories seem to be mostly a collection of second rate stories from some editors slush pile. (ie the Last Dance by Ian Nichols- this bloke seems to have an aversion to driving along country roads in Western Australia, give me the wildflowers of Merredin, rather than the industrial landscape you hit not long after, the first traffic light at Armadale).
Perhaps I just not a fan of speculative fiction, but I rarely got beyond the first page of half of these stories. I'm a lot more careful in my selection of reading material, I'm wary of the glowing wraps given to books such as this one that are not fulfilled
Exciting Australian SF anthology.......2002-01-21
This speculative fiction anthology contains thirty-one powerful tales written by Australian authors. The tales run the gamut crossing fantasy, horror, and science fiction with each contribution well written. Audiences outside of Australia have read several of the writers such as Sara Douglas, Isobelle Carmody, and the late Paul Turner, etc. These authors provide their usual powerful story. Of interest at least to this reviewer is writers that I never read before. These "newcomers" apparently have a strong reputation in Australia and fans will quickly understand why, and like me, will seek other works by these talented contributors who open up brave new worlds for readers. DREAMING DOWN-UNDER is speculative fiction short story collection at its best.
Harriet Klausner
One of the authors pleads for your money.......2001-02-12
I am one of the writers in this anthology.
If you care about science fiction, fantasy, horror, or "slipstream" fiction, then you should buy anthologies like this. The genre has always thrived on short fiction.
Why should you buy this particular anthology? It won the World Fantasy Award and the Ditmar Award. Its editors are Jack Dann, Nebula-Award-winning writer, and Janeen Webb, who is that rare combination: a respected literary academic *and* an excellent fiction writer.
The anthology dominated the Australian awards. All six short story nominations for the Ditmar Award came from the anthology ("The Truth About Weena" won). Not surprisingly, it won the Ditmar for Best Magazine or Anthology in its own right. Stories from Dreaming Down Under also dominated the Aurealis Awards, winning for Best Science Fiction Short Story ("The Truth About Weena") and for Best Fantasy Short Story ("A Walk-On Part in the War").
My story from the anthology has been reprinted twice (in the Dozois Year's Best Science Fiction #16 and Event Horizon), has been translated into French for Galaxies magazine, and has been optioned for feature film development. And it wasn't even one of the award-nominated stories!
Finally, it has a fantastic cover by Hugo-nominated artist Nick Stathopoulos, which also won a Ditmar.
It's an enormous anthology with a breadth of style and subject matter. The only drawback: you might need to train at the gym to strengthen your wrists while reading it.
Outback Daydreams.......2001-02-03
For those who are always looking for the cutting edge of SF, fantasy, and horror, and expanding their horizons, look no further. DREAMING DOWN UNDER is a superlative collection of 31 stories by some of today's best Australian writers out there today. Most of these authors, relatively unknown here in the States (though, since the book's original release in 1998, and a World Fantasy Award winner, some of these tremendous talented authors have started to appear here).Sean Williams, Lucy Sussex, Isobelle Carmody, and Damien Broderick are just starting to appear, while Stephen Dedman, Cherry Wilder, Terry Dowling, Wynne Whiteford, and Sean McMullen are some of the authors that have become a staple in the SF genre. The collection also contains the late and wonderful (Father of Australian SF), George Turner's last, finished just days before his death, but brilliant novella "AND NOW DOTH TIME WASTE ME". Highly recommended for those hungering for a different type of dream...

·How to prevent and treat injuries and increase your strength and flexibility for maximum performance
The book provides a fascinating look at the legendary figures and events in running history. And that's just scratching the surface. Lore of Running is not only the biggest and best running publication on the planet. It's the one book every runner should own.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough look at the science and practice of running.......2007-09-09
Noakes's book on the "Lore of Running" covers just about everything, from what happens inside your muscles to training plans for various races, from biographies of great runners to how to stretch. Noakes seems to be writing both for the runner who wants a deeper understanding of the sport, and for the runner's trainer.
Despite the specialized nature of some of the subject matter, Noakes's writing is quite readable. If you like endurance reading and endurance running, treat yourself to this book.
Phenomenal book on running, best I've come across........2007-08-13
I have been reading about running for the past couple of years--probably more than I ought to. I came upon this book recently in the library (most of my reading is online!) and upon poring through its pages have realized that a lot of what I've read either came from this book, or this book has a lot of what I've read in it. Noakes has written this tome relying upon the best science we have for running with all of its available studies. He bases his conclusions and statements on journal articles where possible and where not does not go overboard in conjecture.
He is an accomplished marathoner and ultra marathoner and in his practice has treated a lot of runners.
Go ahead and buy any book on running. It will have a section on nutrition with the basics that we all know. Contrast with the nutrition section in this and it's actually worth reading; he spends many pages on such details as the proper sodium levels in a beverage, the amount of liquid we need to drink while exercising (not the vague catch-all of "drink as much as you sweat"). His guides on injury and footware are the best researched I've found anywhere.
This is not just the best book on running I've seen, it's the best book _by far_.
I slight this book in two areas:
1) Injury treatment seems to be really slanted substantially toward footwear and orthotics. Now, there may be a reason for that I'm not aware of, and he does give time to exercises and "holistic" approches for injury prevention, including training the hips for, say, a knee problem and not just the feet, but I would have just preferred a bit more.
2) Running technique. He describes in detail the typical heel-strike of most runners but doesn't spend much time that I have found on particulars of technique, such as possibly forefooting or midfooting. Bits and pieces are throughout the book in this, but a subsection on what is now in vogue (pose technique, chirunning, etc.) would have been nice. I don't know that it's reasonable to dismiss these simply because he feels they're useless; I feel like he missed out.
That said, I really can't stress enough how much solid, quality stuff is in this book. He's not simply taking what "everyone knows" about running and making a thousand pages out of it; he does go into meaningful detail.
Finally..........2007-07-17
... A book that comprehensively covers the physiology and biochemistry of running. The volume is exceptionally well written, also a first for a book about the science and theory of running. There are some issues with redundancy and some parts of the book that seem a little out of place (training plans to Walk/Run a 5k?). I think if the reader is interested in this level of detail, that they have most likely been running for some time. Some reviewers complain about the long chapter on the history of great runners. The book is, however, called the "Lore" of running - not the 'science of running.' I found that particular chapter to be especially motivating, personally. As the tagline suggests, this book is a MUST for the serious runner or coach.
The best running book that i have !.......2007-06-09
This is the one, if your are a professional.
Buy it and you wont regret.

A whole lot of material........2007-06-08
I have really enjoyed this book. If you are tired of scratching the surface of running in other books and want to know more about the different theories of chemical processes, theories on how your muscles work, how fatigue develops, significant figures in running history, and several different theories on training for various distances, this may be the book for you. Very thick read, something for everyone, but maybe too much for the novice. Almost a novel of academics for a college course. Great book. A must for a serioius runner's bookcase.

Book Description
A young grape is lucky enough to spend the whole day with his grandpa raisin. Grape thinks Grandpa's wrinkles are awesome. Grandpa says you couldn't pay him to be a grape again. Both of them agree, however, that together they make a great team.
In quite possibly the first intergenerational picture book featuring edible characters, authors Tom Amico and James Proimos's funny and spare text shows us a genuinely sweet relationship between a grandson and his grandfather, while Andy Snair's intentionally simple color palette will remind readers that sometimes the best things in life are the most basic.

Life Lessons from Grandpa.......2007-05-14
My children thoroughly enjoyed this book. As young grape spends time with his grandfather, raisin, they're both treated to some wonderful lessons.
"If I weren't here to be nervous, you might climb too high and fall," Grandpa Raisin cautions the tree-climbing Grape.
When Grape rescues grandpa from the talkative prune, the raisin kindly whispers, "You saved me again."
As grape says, at the end of the story, "When I'm a raisin, I want to be just like YOU--except king!"
A truly entertaining and thoughtful bedtime story.
Just the SWEETEST story!.......2006-03-18
My daughter loves this book! Would recommend it for any child with a loving relationship with their grandparents. Very cute pictures...very funny!

Book Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying fresh grapes? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of fresh grapes vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of fresh grapes? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing the regional markets for imported and exported fresh grapes. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for each region, is based on a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the shares that countries are likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information for strategic planning purposes.
