Customer Reviews:
Fun, occasionally silly mystery with a real 50's feel.......2006-10-28
Lawyer Perry Mason knows there's something funny about this case. Nobody is going to hire an attorney famous for criminal defense work if they really want to minimize publicity. But that's the story when he's asked to help an apparent amnesia victim who claims to remember nothing for a mysterious two week period--a period which, it turns out, included the death of her boyfriend, or husband, or exactly what isn't clear. What is clear is that District Attorney Hamilton Burger is sure he's going to win this case. Unfortunately for Mason's track record, Mason suspects that Burger just might be right, this time.
Perry Mason brings in private investigator Paul Drake and tries to find evidence that will clear his client. He finds plenty of evidence all right--including a treasure of jewels hidden in the amnesiac's luggage. Unfortunately, everything he finds seems merely to nail the coffin tighter around beautiful Elanor Corbin (Hepner). Mason is stumped, and when he can't come up with a case of his own, he starts looking for loose ends in the prosecution case. Still, even the most clever cross-examination can only do so much in an open-and-shut case like this--right?
Author Erle Stanley Gardner combines courtroom theatrics with solid investigation (using techniques such as ultraviolet light and metal detectors that were state of the art for the 1950s when this book was written) to produce an enjoyable mystery. Mason is slightly pompous, but less so than his adversary, the District Attorney. Sidekick Della Street has a definite appeal of her own--and a snappish personality that will definitely bring a smile to the reader.
Gardner's story is certainly a product of the 1950s. Race doesn't seem to exist, women are universally emotional and prone to outbursts (and definitely not attorneys or judges), and people smuggle gems as they cruise between Europe and the United States. Still, finding the truth trumps these limitations--even as they provide a useful look into a past that never really was.
Among Gardner's Best.......2005-03-16
Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) wrote more than one hundred novels over the course of his long career. A trail lawyer himself, Gardner's best known creation was Perry Mason, a flamboyant criminal defense attorney who earns his large fees by virtue of a remarkable talent for using the law to uncover the truth on the witness stand.
Gardner was at the peak of his powers during the 1950s, and THE CASE OF THE GLAMOROUS GHOST, published in 1955, is a very sharply written and very clever work. Written in a staccato, dialogue-heavy style that recalls the works of Hammett, it offers the story of Eleanor Corbin--a flighty young woman with a history of getting into "scrapes." And her current one is a dilly: Eleanor has been arrested for wandering around a park in a nearly naked state. Mason steps in at the request of her mortified family in an effort to control both Eleanor and the press... but when the headlines break it isn't long before Eleanor finds herself on trial for murder.
GHOST has a particularly complicated plot that ranges from lying clients to blackmail to smuggling, but Gardner is adept at keeping every element in the air until the last few pages, at which point they all click into place with unexpected logic. Although laws--and certainly police procedure and forensics--have changed a great deal since this novel was first published, it is a tremendous amount of fun from start to finish. Among Gardner's best. Recommended.

Dancing in the Moonlight.......2004-10-16
The Case of the Glamorous Ghost, by Erle Stanley Gardner
The `Foreword' dedicated this book to George Burgess Magrath, M.D. who blazed a trail in homicide investigations that many have followed to examine unexplained deaths. Dr. Magrath's devotion to the truth was his greatest contribution.
A young woman was seen in the park late at night, nearly nude. The police were called, and find the woman, an apparent amnesia victim. Della shows Perry this news article, then tells him the half-sister wants Perry to represent Eleanor Corbin, the subject of that story. The half-sister warns Perry that Eleanor must be in another jam, after taking off with Douglas Hepner two weeks ago. We learn that Eleanor met Douglas on a return cruise from Europe, and their family is wealthy.
Eleanor tells Perry that she married Douglas, they were in an automobile accident, and she remembers nothing. But Douglas has disappeared and can't be found. The investigation finds out a number of hidden facts in the background of this newly married couple. But were they in fact married? Other statements don't check out, and lead to new people who are connected to this pair. Soon a dead body shows up, and the found evidence points to Eleanor. Her story sounds incrimination, and her only witness is the murder victim! But Perry figures out where the loose ends are, and unravels the cloak over the mystery in order to free his client. Like other stories, one fact leads to another until the case is closed. The innocent is cleared, the guilty are revealed in another dramatic court trial. Another example where murder is used to try to hide other crimes. Note how Perry draws the right conclusion from the contents of the dead man's pockets.
Pretty good whodunnit........2003-09-11
This one isn't Perry Mason's most riveting case, but the unlikely opening gambit of an [unclothed] ghost in the park hooks the reader quickly, and as with most of Gardner's books the surprises come fast and furious. I figured out most of the case (for a change) before Perry unraveled the rest of it for me. If you have an hour to while away on a plane or a beach or just over lunch, this book is an enjoyable, though not brilliant, companion.
Better than t.v........2002-06-03
This book, like all of the other Perry Mason books, far succeed their t.v. counterpart. This book was very good and surprising. It's always interesting to find out whodunit. It's never the one you think it is. Great read. Highly recommended.

You come to this place when you wonder, and sometimes, only when you dream. When a young warrior of a dark race finds himself bound in servitude to a beautiful cruel princess, his loyalty becomes entwined with something more horrifying and mysterious than endless night falling over the ancient desert. When a courageous young servant reveals her hidden wisdom to the madman conqueror of the world, her fate is joined to a nightmare suspended beyond death and outside the universe. Two souls from different times--their destinies connected through hundreds of other lives and generations, through soft whispers of the wind, through ancient truths that lie buried in an island between worlds. Both souls enslaved through dream and desire in an endless conflict between truth and illusion. They can only be set free by the wonder of the Compass Rose.

Rich, Beautiful Storytelling.......2006-05-16
This is a good book. How good, you ask? After reading the first few chapters, I set the book aside and e-mailed Vera, asking if she would consider writing a Compass Rose story for an anthology I was editing for DAW.
This isn't a traditionally structured novel which moves from A to B to C. Rather, it moves from Z to G to 16, then comes back to B and C. All of the stories are set in the richly developed world of the Compass Rose, and all of the stories do interweave to tell a larger story, though you don't see the fullness of the story until the very last page.
When you finish reading, you want to flip back to the first page and start over again. This is not only a book that can be read twice; it demands it, and it rewards you for doing so.
Vera's worldbuilding and description are like a really good chocolate mousse: so rich it's almost too sweet, but so good you want more. And the mythological feel of the world feels real and true. Here's a quick example:
A spurting fountain of hueless water began to pulse from her vein, and she offered it to the queen.
"Take my Water and drink, for even Ris drank once from my wrist. For that act of quenching, Ris has given me Water in exchange for my mortal blood."
Maybe it's just me, but the depth of those two little paragraphs blew me away. And the whole book is like that, building a mythology, an entire world with a deep, genuine sense of history.
Because it took me a while to read this one, I sometimes lost track of characters as they disappeared and reappeared in the narrative. If you're into plot-heavy, fast-paced books, this may not be the one for you.
Bottom line: Vera's a good writer. I've read her book Lords of Rainbow, and it was good. Dreams of the Compass Rose is great. Go buy them.
Dreams of the Compass Rose.......2004-07-14
While all of the chapters can stand as stories on their own, together they build a complete, unique, and fascinating world with an unusually rich mythology and civilization. This is a fascinating read.
Unusual and Engaging Fantasy.......2004-02-08
This book is different than a lot of fantasy I've read. Some of the stories read like folk tales with the author's grand, old world style. I loved the imagery and vastness of the world of the Compass Rose. I was a little overwhelmed at times, but the author's choice to tell the story through separate yet intertwined tales made the book very accessible for me. Like buying a very rich, giant-size chocolate bar and being able to breaking off tiny scored bites or a huge section. Very enjoyable book! I'm glad I bought it.
Good First Try.......2002-07-03
All over the Internet long-time fantasy readers complain about novels that are cookie-cutter product, each the same as the last, with the same elements, told in the same bland style.
Well, here at last in a new writer who is experimenting with a different style, and with different material. Nazarian describes DREAMS OF THE COMPASS ROSE as a collage novel; what it really is is a series of short stories, with some of the same characters wandering through.
Her style sometimes falters, as if reaching for an effect her skills haven't quite defined, but that's a minor flaw when you compare it to the rich vivid detail of her imagery, the humor, the pathos, the faint trace-elements from mythologies outside the same old Western venue. There is strong potential here; the sequence from the storyteller's point of view shows evidence of brilliance.
Readers who like something strange and new should take a risk on this book, and support an emerging writer who is trying to break the mold. Go on, take a chance, I dare you to foretell just where this tale is going. If you shrug and pass, you cannot blame publishers for squashing new voices and putting out yet more bland by-the-numbers product: vote with your wallet.
Classic Fantasy.......2002-05-09
I found Vera Nazarian's book to be a wonderful journey into foreign lands. It reinvents the old-time fantasy reminisent of a time before Tolkien and Tolkien wannabees. She creates a world rich in myth and culture. The places of the Compass Rose are places I wish to visit again and again. Her stories and characters take the reader by surprise. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent advice for living healthy!!.......2007-07-21
I am truly thankful for the information presented in The Miracle of Fasting. I had an ulcerated leg that was destined to be amputated from a lack of circulation. I tried everything to save it. I almost gave up the fight until I read this wonderful book. I put the advice that Patricia Bragg gave in the book into practice and started fasting as much as my body would tolerate. After 5 weeks of a radical diet change and some fasting I noticed some improvement and over time my ulcers disappeared and I'm happy to say I have all 10 toes and 2 happy feet. I am healthier and very VERY thankful for " THE MIRACLE OF FASTING" Buy the book! You'll never be the same!
Fasting.......2007-05-13
Years ago I fasted a least once a week just as the Bragg book suggest. It worked then and it works now for controlling weight. The Bragg book on fasting was inpirational, motivational and gave helpful guidelines on how to fast. I have tried many other ways to control my overeating and weight loss and this method works for me.
very goog.......2007-04-16
This book not only contains useful information about fasting and healthful living but also it motivates you with nice and motivating words and expressions.
Alot of Fluff.......2007-02-19
This book has some good information in it, but it is mostly fluff, filler and repetition. Each time I sit down to read it, I fall asleep because there is so much filler. The book could easily be reduced to a pamphlet-sized book without any sacrifice of information. I like to know how and why, and I don't mind reading on and on if the how and why is explained. I even enjoyed the China Study, which has a lot of explanatory text to support statements. Most people would call the China Study a dry read, but every word has a purpose. The Miracle of Fasting is mostly just empty words with statements only weakly backed up by the author's personal observations, not science. I think there are some useful tidbits in this book, but I would suggest you borrow this book from a friend or the library if you can. I am hoping to find a more comprehensive book on the subject of fasting. Any suggestions?
Good for motivation.......2006-12-13
This is more for motivation than for factual information, but is excellent in that regard. For more information, check out Fuhrman's book.

LIke all Bragg books.......2007-01-22
They couldve written everything on one page, thne rest are just random helth facts. Like all Bragg books.
not alot of information, tons of repeating.......2006-05-17
This book should only be about 10 pages for the amount of information in it. The information is good but if you buy the companion cookbook, almost none of the recipes follow the diet they prescribe. There are recipes for liver in their cookbook! That's one of the most toxic foods, so basically it appears as if they just want to make money off of you(they're certainly not altruistic health crusaders). And Paul Bragg is dead but they don't mention how he died or how old he was(certainly not 120 as promised), I read somewhere it was in a body surfing accident, but I'm skeptical. Don't buy this book, borrow it from the library because clearly they just want to make lots of money off of you buy trying to lure you in with their promises of good health that their cook book does not support, and all the information you need is on their website.
"The Best of The Best".......2006-04-24
The entire series of Bragg books and products will save your life! Jack LaLanne states; "he would have been dead at age 16 if he had not attended The Braggs Crusade". He is a product today at age 90, of how living the principes of Patricia Bragg and Paul Bragg, M.D. Ph.D is mere proof. Must read the entire series, if you want to feel good and stay forever young.
Saved my life ! !.......2006-03-10
This book as opened my eyes and now I am a knew and better woman. It has taught me how to eat better and be a better person in whole. A lot of good information. I would recomend this book to anyone. It has saved my life.
Almost impossible to find a better book..........2006-03-09
This book is amazing. Paul Bragg is amazing. Everyone who hasn't read this book should read it immediately. It is for everyone. It will open your eyes to the truth -- we are responsible for our own health. We are not victims. If we're sick, it's our fault. It's not because there is some kind of virus or popular disease that is going around. We decide what goes into our bodies. We decide to eat things that are just not for us, like dead animals and bleached breads.
If you're sick of feeling sick, read this book! If you've ever had a headache, read this book!
My family's life has been strongly influenced by Bragg's books. My mother was very sick from a disease that could not be cured, or so said the doctors. She was allergic to medicine. After reading this book and eliminating "foods" like meat, eggs, almost all dairy, and baked foods, our family was on the way to healthy living. I was 4 years old at that time and haven't been to the doctor since then, except for yearly check-ups and one incident in which I faked a fever in order to skip a test (the doctor believed it). Because of the unbelievable complete recovery of my mother, and excellent overall health of our entire family, we too have begun influencing others and setting an example. Today I am a happy raw foodist. I eat 100% raw plant food. I love it and the raw food diet is the closest to natural living.

Some people are born to bake, boil, and lovingly tend to food, and they do it willingly. Then there are those among us who are born to burn, break, and destroy food--and would rather pull out our own wisdom teeth than have to cook a meal. For these anti-cooks, Peg Bracken has been offering advice, and dare it be said, creating recipes since the 1970s. The Compleat I Hate to Cook Book combines Bracken's earlier work, the infamous I Hate to Cook Book along with its two successors. The emphasis is on cheap, simple, "cut as many corners and spend as little time in the kitchen as humanly possible" foods. With such lovely names (Shuttemup Cookies, Fat Man's Shrimp, A Puffy Prune Whip), even naysayers will be curious. Fancy ingredients are replaced by cans of condensed soup, baked beans, and crushed corn flakes. Three-page recipes are traded for short, snappy, and simple instructions. Bracken hasn't forgotten these health-conscious times either: in a chapter entitled "Some of My Best Friends Are Fat," she concocts easy recipes for Skinny Meatloaf and a rather tasty 22 Calorie Banana Whip, which coincidentally contains just 22 calories! This book comes highly recommended for kitchen phobics the world over. --Naomi Gesinger

I love to cook!.......2007-08-26
This book is probably one of the reasons I love to cook today. My mother got this book when I was in highschool and together we looked through the recipes and laughed till we hurt. Stayabed Stew was my favorite. My mom is gone now, but I have her copy and it keeps her near as I thumb through the (slightly) spattered pages. I learned to cook using this book, the Doubleday Cookbook and the Joy of Cooking.
Funny, and the recipes are good, too........2007-02-18
This book is extremely funny even if you enjoy cooking, as I do. Some of her recipes reflect the time in which the book was written (lots of canned food) but most of them are actually quite tasty. It's fun to read even if you never cook one of the recipes.
Great Gift for Single, Live-ins, Young Marrieds; anyone.......2006-03-23
The "I Hate to Cook", full of witty wisdom that goes far beyond the kitchen. This book is worth buying for its humor alone, but the common sense advice and cooking directions/recipes are a real prize whether you are a nouveau cook or a skilled chef.
I believe the first "I Hate to Cook Book" was published back in 1960. As a new bride, I bought my own version in 1965, along with Craig Claiborne's "Herb and Spice" cookbook. These two books have stood well in the test of time and formed a solid base for my own culinary adventures.
"I Hate to Cook", is my favorite gift for people who are getting married, moving into their first apartment or place ,going to college, or whatever; this book is "the bomb", as the younguns now say. Not only does, "I Hate to Cook" give good culinary advice but the recipes are quick, easy and delicious. I have made most of the recipes in this book and they all work and taste good.
Give someone you like or love the gift of laughter and success in the kitchen. You may reap a whole lifetime of cookies and pot roasts.
Cookbook Author's Favorite Cookbook.......2006-03-20
I write cookbooks, and I collect cookbooks, and this is my hands-down favorite. Bracken writes incredibly well; she's both clear and very funny. The recipes are for real food the family will like. Bracken addresses all sorts of real-life food situations -- the family get-together, the casual gathering after the kids' soccer game, the late night snack, the potluck supper. She makes the valuable points that recipes are resilient, that you can and should go with your own tastes, cutting back or leaving out what you don't like, adding more of what you do. She demystifies cooking, something that is essential for the currently generation of young adults who grew up in non-cooking households.
And the food tastes good.
I openly admit that several of the recipes that have appeared in my cookbooks are adaptations (usually for nutritional purposes) of recipes I got from Peg Bracken. Imitation is definitely the sincerest form of flattery. I only hope to be as good a cookbook writer as she.
You want this book. You need this book. Buy this book now.
A Tribute To The Non Cook.......2004-07-01
Here's a woman after my own heart: she hates to cook and is unashamed to admit this. The manner in which Miss Bracken admits is rife with humour and finesse ~ plus she tosses into the bargain 180 quick, easy, housewife tested recipes (this book was published in the '60s ~ 1960 to be exact) that anyone can make, even those hostile toward kitchen environs. Miss Bracken's wit is peppery (note the food connotation), vinegary (ditto), and her prose is salted (!) through with references to classic literature, tidbits of common sense advice, and slams at 'pop' psychology (as hilarious then as it remains today). Here's a sampling of (some of) what you're in for with this read: 'The Leftover, or Every Family Needs a Dog'; 'Spuds and Other Starches, or Ballast is a Girl's Best Friend'; 'Potluck Supper, or How to Bring Water For the Lemonade'; 'Luncheon for the Girls, or Wait Until You Taste Maybelle's Peanut Butter Aspic'. In between the pages of these chapters you'll find recipes for such tasties as: 'Skid Road Stroganoff', 'Sub Gum Yuk', 'Oddment', 'Old Faithful', and, appropo for the era, 'Beetniks' (a nifty way of fixing shredded pickled red beets). If you catch a whiff of the droll and acerbic, you are quite correct. Peg Bracken is a jewel. Very popular in the Sixties and Seventies, she also published an Appendix to 'The I Hate To Cook Book', plus several other books including 'The I Hate To Housekeep Book', 'A Window Over the Sink', 'I Try To Behave Myself' (etiquette), 'But I Wouldn't Have Missed It For The World' (travel), and 'On Getting Old For The First Time'. In all of these, she never misses a beat, her timing is impeccable. The sort of woman you'd love to have for a friend or neighbour, especially when one runs out of sugar and can't find the car keys. I highly recommend you begin your Bracken odyssey with this book, and see where it leads you. Enhanced by Hilary Knight's warm and witty line drawings.
