Book Description
A Mystery Guild Alternate Selection"Excellent . . . a thriller that simply oozes southern charm and atmosphere." - BooklistWith sass and wit, Deborah Knott, formerly a defense attorney in North Carolina's Colleton County, is putting herself firmly on the seat of power - a district judgeship. She's also making good on a campaign promise: helping to build houses for battered women. Here Deborah expects muscle aches, not the near-rape of a young woman and the murder of her attacker. And she certainly never expects that her hammer - complete with her fingerprints - will be the murder weapon . . .

awesome settings and dialogue, a little light on mystery.......2002-05-28
If you've read Ms. Maron's 8-book Sigrid Harald series, you might well wonder if this is indeed the same author who has now given us (a coincidence?) 8 more in the Judge Deborah Knott collection. Sigrid is a straight-laced NYC detective whose psyche just starts to unfold by the end of the set. The stories focus on the crime (usually a murder in chapter one) and the police procedures involved in catching the crook. Little is done to reveal the characters, provide setting changes, etc., a technique we've referred to before as "minimalist".
Enter Ms. Knott -- in Southern Discomfort, the second book of the set, it's a third of the book before anything really wrong happens. Even then, the crime and the perpetrator are uncovered almost more through circumstance than direct intent. Rather, we have a rich fabric of family relationships, single woman issues, feminist issues, mild religious and race issues, interwoven with light suspense over what happened and "whodunit". Along the way, we get a sampling of the court cases Knott is hearing as the newest District Court Judge. Here again, much is revealed of her character and philosophy through what she says and thinks while handling her judgments and sentencings. Moreover, many of Maron's readers report finding her descriptions of rural North Carolina as outright travelogues, superior to books written with that intent.
We've always thought Maron to be a talented and gifted writer, and her hand is revealed to a tee so far in these two books about Knott. For our taste, a little more plot complexity (actually, maybe intensity is a better word) and a little less "down home" chit chat amongst the family would move these right up to the 5-star class! Meanwhile, we're on to #3...
Praise for Margaret Maron!.......2001-11-01
Although this is the second book in this series, it is the first by this author that I have read, and I enjoyed this book immensely. I'm not sure what it was that made it different than other books of this genre, but it was. In this novel, Deborah Knott (who is the only girl in a large family of boys) is sworn in as a judge, her brother is poisoned, her neice is assaulted, and neighborhood dogs are disappearing. We follow her through her days in court as well as her personal life, family life, etc. She is realistic, down-to-earth, and very easy to like. The author does a great job of making Deborah a part of the story without singling her out as the protagonist. It's almost as if all the characters in the book get equal billing, making it all the more believable. The parts I liked best is whenever Deborah has a thought that may or may not be correct or might be a moral dilemma of some kind, there is an argument in her head between two voices--the preacher and the pragmatist--but are not overdone and are usually only a sentence or two. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a series that is light, yet believable, with likable characters.
ANOTHER GOOD ONE BY MARGATET MARON!!!!.......2001-03-06
This is the second book in the Deborah Knott Series. In this one Deborah is sworn in as Judge. She is asked to help in building a house for battered women. It is being build by all women workers. Later she finds her niece in the house, beaten up and maybe a rape attempt. The young man who did this is found dead at the scene. Deborah has picked up the hammer used in the killing and therefore could be a suspect. As the story unwinds, her brother is in hopital from arsenic poisoning and the young man who was killed also had arsenic in his blood. The ending is a surprise but very good. I could see the town and the people in my mind as the story progressed. As very good book with what I would call a light mystery. If you want horror and gore, try Patricia Cornwell or John Sandford. I can relate to the family ties that are in the book. Just all around very good.
Southern family life provides a backdrop for murder........1998-03-29
The changing North Carolina landscape provides a setting for murder in Margaret Maron's Judge Deborah Knott series. Southern Discomfort brings Deborah back for her second appearance after being introduced in Bootlegger's Daughter where she balances roles as lawyer/daughter/sister/aunt/ and now judge as she struggles to address issues like overdevelopment in her much loved home. Backyard barbecues, church, home, and family--the backbone of Southern culture--provide the backdrop for another haunting tale. As Bootlegger's Daughter closes Deborah has become a district judge and in Southern Discomfort she is delivering on a commitment to provide housing for battered women. After her niece is assaulted at a building site her attacker is murdered, and Deborah finds herself investigating murder in the family when her niece becomes the murder suspect. Maron's plot device of "prgamatist" v. "preacher," her personal chatterbox, is delightful as she struggles to explore both sides of issues, an important characteristic for a judge. When Maron began the Deborah Knott series after a long career with Sigrid Harald in New York, she emerged from a good writer to a great one, as demonstrated in Agatha, Anthony, and Edgar awards for Bootlegger's Daughter. Maron has borrowed from her Southern roots to create a strong woman of the South in a giant of a mystery. The mystery as morality play, the struggle between good and evil, is nowhere better played than in America's genteel South.
Maron is an expert at plotting, characterization and setting.......1998-03-28
Deborah Knott has just assumed the district judgeship that was vacated when Perry Byrd died. We see Deborah from two sides: first as the consummate professional who is politically astute and knows exactly how to play the game to get reelected and secondly as a young woman who does exactly what she wants without worrying about the consequences.
Deborah's brother, Herman, has a daughter, AnnieSue, who is apprenticing as an electrical contractor. Deborah and Annie Sue volunteer to help build a home for a poor family. One evening when Annie Sue is working at the site alone, she is attacked by Carver Bannerman, a local no-good who is running around on his pregnant wife and also recently appeared in Deborah's courtroom. Before Carver can rape Annie Sue, he is murdered. When traces of arsenic are found in his blood and Annie Sue's father almost dies of arsenic poisoning, Annie Sue become a prime suspect.
Maron is anexpert at building a plot, planting clues all along the way until you are sure you know who did it and then revealing the killer to be someone else who is absolutely the only person could have done it all along. At the same time, she builds sympathy for the character.
The only thing I did not like was a device that Maron used where Deborah has 2 inner voices that speak to her: a "pragmatist" and a "preacher". These 2 voices comment at various points in the story, and I found the interruption in the narrative flow irritating.
Maron is a very talented writer, and her characters stay with you because they are so real. Although this book was not as good as BOOTLEGGER'S DAUGHTER, Maron paints the North Carolina setting, its flora and fauna, perfectly. She recreates the southern idiom with flair.

Book Description
Only Rita Mae Brown, author of Rubyfruit Jungle, could have written a novel as passionately delightful as Southern Discomfort. Here is a witty, warm and pentrating tale of two decades in Montgomery Alabama--a world where all is not what it seems. Meet Hortensia Reedmuller Banastre, a beautiful woman entrenched on old money, white magnolia and a loveless marriage--until she meets an utterly gorgeous young prizefighter. Amid such memorable characters as Banana Mae Parker and Blue Rhonda Latrec (two first-class whores) and Reverend Linton Ray (who wears his clerical collar too tightly for anyone's good), Hortensia struggles to survive the hurricane of emotions caused by her scandalous love. How she ultimately triumphs is a touching and beautiful human drama--an intense and exuberant affair of the heart.

Funny, but not Fierce Enough.......2006-09-13
When "Rubyfruit Jungle" bubbled up from the radical lesbian underground to become a cult best-seller back in 1977, a new literary star was born. As books go it was boisterously funny, unself-pitying, straightforwardly sapphic, eons removed from that old Radclyffe Hall, "Well of Loneliness," love-that-dare-not-speak-its-name genre. It left readers wanting more.
So "Southern Discomfort"was more, but also less: it's a skinny book. It's a romance set earlier in the century in Montgomery, Alabama; and skinny though it is, it's generous in the ways that count. Just bursting with fanciful characters, unorthodox sexual couplings, preposterous happenings. It's even funnier than "Rubyfruit Jungle," as it's not so autobiographical, and its canvas is bigger. It gives us more of Brown's talent for establishing place, and elucidating the ties that bind. It demonstrates her knack for making the bizarre seem appropriate, and for delivering it in an understated "isn't all the world like this" style.
Plainly, while Brown's an avowed lesbian and lesbian themes are important to her, she's also working in the popular Southern Gothic style, as exemplified by Flannery O'Connor and others.
Brown's rendition of Montgomery, Alabama, its mores, its minor characters, and its annual Halloween Great Witch Hunt is delicious. We learn that "people could tell you that an Orange captain of 1835 went on to become a Confederate colonel, or a Black captain of 1852 made a fortune in railroads. As it turned out, most captains did well in this world: a few degenerated into drunks or scoundrels, but not many. Lila Reedmuller was Orange captain of 1891. She was one of the four girls ever chosen for that honor, and Lila went on to reign over Montgomery society...."
And we meet Blue Rhonda Latrec, who "was eighteen years old and at the top of her profession. She was a first-class whore. On this hot day she plopped her butt on the front stoop of her small frame dwelling on Water Street. Blue Rhonda considered herself fortunate in her location, as the train station was just down the road. From the mouth of that beautiful structure poured a steady stream of new customers...."
"Southern Discomfort" is an entertaining book, but Brown often pulled her punches. With a little more courage, she could be delivering top-flight Southern Gothic, which, at its best, needs ferocious conviction.
If you read one, you know you must read them all.......2003-11-19
Southern Discomfort is pure delight that is enhanced by author Rita Mae Brownýs wit, wacky characters, wild tales, and wonderful writing style. Southern Discomfort spans two decades in Montgomery, AL, in which beautiful, old-money Hortensia (married) meets the man of her dreams: a spectacularly gorgeous young prizefighter. Youýve got your small-town scandal, complete with Banana Mae and Blue Rhonda, a couple of high-class whores. Wonderful writing accents this surprisingly touching story.
A little different than the other R.M.B. i've read..........2002-06-06
This book was a little different than the other Rita Mae Brown books i've read, but just as enjoyable.
It takes place during the 20's in a southern town... and tells the story of people from all walks of life - blacks, the wealthy whites, and some white prostitutes. She tells the story of each group of people in a very authentic way and gives each group a sense of pride. And of course... the stories mingle as the characters begin mingling outside theor social circles.
The way i'd say this book was different than some of her others (and i've read about 10), is that it's more... well... more like a soap opera. (along the lines of V.C. Andrews). There is incestual sex, illigitamate pregnancies, etc.
This book was definately fun to read though... and has a beautiful message...
Very disappointed.......2002-05-29
The publisher promised "witty & warm" I found nothing close to either. In my opion, the book was pooly written, no charm, humor or even believable. The setting was Montgomery Alabama, 1900,it could have been LA, Chicago or New York and almost any year with the lack of real reference to the time and place. The author tried way too hard to come up with unusual names for her characters to the point that it was ridiculous . I just didn't believe the characters and didn't care.
Read this for a good laugh.......2002-05-25
One of my favorite books of all time. I laughed and laughed...when my father read it, even he was rolling on the floor in stitches!
Book Description
Today is Monday. The calls do not come as before. Weeks elapse between them, and when I answer the phone there is no overlap of voices, only my mother's. She spends much of the conversation avoiding mention of the pink elephant trumpeting in the middle of the room.
The pink elephant would be my defection to Georgia. When I telephoned with the news of my imminent relocation my father asked, "Georgia, as in the Republic of Georgia by the Black Sea, or Georgia as in the Peach State?" He hoped I meant the former because that Georgia promised unique opportunities to advance the democratic cause of justice. What could Georgia, former land of the Confederacy, offer?
Convicting arsonists and thieves in Macon, Georgia, was never Harvard Law grad Natalie Goldberg's dream. The pay is abysmal, the work is exhausting, and the humidity is hell for a woman with curly hair. But when a steamy romance with her high-powered New York boss went bad, Natalie jumped at the first job offered, packed her bags, and headed south.
Natalie's leftist Yankee background brands her a conspicuous outsider in this insular community. Her father, a famous civil rights lawyer, refuses to accept her career change—or talk to her. Her best friend begs her to come back home, and Natalie keeps thinking she sees her former lover everywhere.
But Natalie's not completely alone. There are a garden-obsessed neighbor, a former beauty queen-turned-defense attorney, and a handsome colleague who has a nervous tic whenever she gets near. And then there's a capital case that has her eating antacids by the truckload.
Yep, it's going to be one heckuva long, hot summer. . . .

World v. Natalie Goldberg.......2007-10-10
'My Summer of Southern Discomfort' is the first-person narrative of Natalie Goldberg, a liberal young Harvard-educated lawyer trying her first capital punishment case after a turbulent move south to Macon, Georgia. The book touches on a lot of intense issues, including the capital punishment debate, misogyny in the workplace, Southern culture and customs, and romantic obsession. This is NOT chick lit!
The Publishers Weekly review above is mostly on the mark (fish-out-of-water, economical prose, memorable voice, and deceptive cover art), apart from its citation of a "dud" line as though that line were exemplary. It is not. They picked out the ONLY "dud" line in the book! So that is kind of annoying, because there are so many lovely one-liners here: "his boyish face aged by disappointment," "I can safeguard the living from threats of violence; I can work to avenge the dead. I can protect the wounded from future harm, or try." That line gave me goosebumps.
This is a really satisfying read, in part because Stephanie Gayle handles all the necessary legal jargon and cultural detail in a clear, natural, unobtrusive way. (What I mean is, details like characters drinking mint juleps or the courthouse clock tower rarely telling the correct time are vivid without ever making us think the author is saying, 'remember, we're in the South! I've done my research!', as lesser authors sometimes do.) Natalie is a wholly sympathetic character, and reading her story feels like stepping inside the head of a good friend who's trying to do some good in the world, and trying to find her own place in it.
Great read!.......2007-08-07
I just finished this book and was so sad when the last page appeared - I didn't want it to end! Natalie's summer of transformation from a heart broken Yankee to more relaxed Southerner draws you in with a cast of memorable, well developed supporting characters. It is surprisingly well written for a freshman piece. The author's wit and sarcasm shine through out the novel. Her attention to detail, from how things look, smell and sound, helps you feel like you are there in Macon with Natalie, understanding all she is going through. I look forward to Ms. Gayle's second book.
2 stars.......2007-08-06
Natalie Goldberg has spent the last year building a new life in Macon, Georgia after leaving New York where a failed, adultrous love affair with a co-worker took place. Like her father, Natalie is a lawyer, but serves the prosecution, rather than radical causes; yet, she still is able to help people. She guides an abused woman to freedom and safety on her own time and at work is presently working to get justice for a murdered child.
** Although Natalie's life story is very realistically portrayed, the ordinariness of it all, combined with the awkward first person, present tense narrative, and lack of real plot made this a somewhat flat read. I kept waiting to find out what the point of the story was, and at the end, still did not know. **

Excellent character study.......2007-07-22
I started reading this book in the evening and didn't put it down until I had finished it at 5 am. Despite my lack of sleep, I felt pretty good about life.
Gayle has succeeded in the difficult task of writing a feel-good novel set the real world. This book is an extremely well crafted character study in which crime exists, mistakes are made, people have flaws, and life is complicated. Even so, Gayle deftly reveals her characters' good qualities and binds them into a community that I was jealous to join.
The story is told from the point of view of Natalie Goldberg, a woman who is undergoing a profound personal transformation. However, because Natalie is such an observant character, her own issues do not overwhelm the narrative and she brings into focus the other citizens of Macon, who are diverse and well drawn. As a lawyer, Natalie's interaction with her cocounsel, Ben, during a murder trial is probably the most difficult and rewarding relationship in the book, but Gayle gives us enough interesting characters to populate the whole town.
This book defies easy categorization; it's not chick lit, a romance, a thriller, a heavy drama, or a frivolity. It was definitely a great read, however, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
My Summer of Southern Discomfort.......2007-07-15
This book is a page-turner from start to finish. I quickly became wrapped up in the life of the protagonist and found myself identifying with her in ways I didn't expect. The plotline combines an interesting legal story that touches on several ethical issues with a great character study of several different people, along with a dash of romance. The characters are rich and multi-faceted, so that they really are true human beings with strengths and flaws. I found myself rooting for so many different characters, including ones that I didn't think I would like as people when I started the book. It is a fun read that it also thought-provoking and inspiring to women. I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
Vitally linked to the Caribbean and southern Europe as well as to the Confederacy, the Cigar City of Tampa, Florida, never fit comfortably into the biracial mold of the New South. In Southern Discomfort, the esteemed historian Nancy A. Hewitt explores the interactions among distinct groups of women--native-born white, African American, and Cuban and Italian immigrant women--that shaped women's activism in this vibrant, multiethnic city.
Around the turn of the twentieth century, several historical currents converged in Tampa. The city was subject to the state's newly imposed forms of legal segregation from 1885 on, and it served as a center for exiles organizing on behalf of the Cuban War of Independence and as the disembarkation point for U.S. troops heading to Cuba in 1898. The city was the entrept for thousands of Cuban and Italian immigrants seeking work in the booming cigar trade, and it attracted dozens of itinerant radicals eager to address locally based revolutionary clubs, mutual aid societies, and labor unions.
Tampa was also home to an astonishing array of voluntary and reform organizations among Black and white native-born women. Hewitt shows how women's interests were transformed by Jim Crow, progressive reform, and homegrown and imported radicalism, and how the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain dramatically reshaped Tampa women's activism, inspiring large numbers of Latin women to enter the public sphere.
Southern Discomfort emphasizes the process by which women forged and reformulated their activist identities from Reconstruction through the U.S. declaration of war against Spain in April 1898, the industrywide cigar strike of 1901, and the emergence of progressive reform and labor militancy. This masterful volume also recasts our understanding of southern history by demonstrating how Tampa's triracial networks alternately challenged and reinscribed the South's biracial social and political order.

Book Description
Southern Discomfort is the journey of Sarah Mattox as she moves away from everything she has ever known to find out who she really is. Throughout her quest for self-discovery Sarah and her family take emotional struggles, new places, and downright tragedy head on. At the height of her self-discovery and happiness, Sarah loses the one thing that has always centered her. Sarah has to face life or run from it, and she decides to face it with all she has. Southern Discomfort follows the life of a tiny Southern girl emotionally traumatized on a daily basis, carries her through the roughest times of motherhood, and nestles her into a world where she can feel love again. Southern Discomfort dares to take on the complex relationships Southern women endure and impose on one another. It shakes the stereotypes of sweet mamas and harmless grannies. The author, Stacee Miner, gives us a real look at rural Texas, where not even daddies can keep the bad man at bay, then takes us across the country to life in Vermont tackling the questions: "Can you ever really escape your past?" "Are fears ever really conquered?" and "Is forgiving and forgetting a true possibility?"

This book is so honest and open about the dynamics of Southern relationships. The modern day Southern Belle and the clash of old and new. If you grew up in a small southern town, it will help bring you closure. If you married a southern bride, it will help you have insight. It is a great read, very visual, worth every penny.
Cannot wait for Ms. Stacee Miner to publish her next one!

A great adventure through the "deminsions." Beautifully written. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next.
Stretch your mind.......2005-05-29
If you are ready to wrap your mind around some new twists and turns on conventional thinking, this is the book for you. The characters are "real", living in today's world , the past and the future. You will like them, and perhaps envy their opportunites to grow and change.
Timely Story with Timeless Message.......2005-05-26
I was given this book as a present but one look at its cover and the information on it convinced me it was a book I could really get into. I've been interested in the life-after-death concept for a very long time -- since I lost a loved one and had a few experiences in that area. This book wraps it up so neatly and presents it in such an interesting way. I have already read it again.
A spiritual Visual.......2005-05-23
Dimensions opened my mind to the wonderful possibilities of afterlife. Reading Johnny Rogers' encounters and experiences through the dimensions of a life beyond earth was most spiritual. This story fine tuned my personal beliefs and expectations for the continuous growth of our souls.
Wow!.......2005-05-03
What a thought provoking book. Goofy as it sounds, I really didn't want to put the book down. Really quite enjoyable.

This thought provoking book gives hope to all who read it and follow Dr. Randolph's advice. I'm coming out of the "fog" because of his advice!
Catchy title, but..........2007-03-13
You'd think with a title like Hormone Hell, there'd be a revelation inside the book, especially being published rather recently. There's no revelation. This is all old news. And there are better books that address the subject. If you haven't done your research yet on hormones and BHRT, this would be a good place to start, but again...better books abound. Dr. Randolph is also pushing his own progesterone cream...go figure.
My Experience with Bio-Identical Hormones.......2007-02-14
First, let me say with much chagrin that I have never read the above book. I gave it 5 stars because I did not want to downgrade its rating if I hadn't read it. That being said, I have some really good info to share with those thinking of going down the bio-identical path, and I'm hoping Amazon is ok with this. I started on pharmaceutical hormones when I was 2 years into menopause. First I took pills, then I went on the patch. I took both estrogen and progesterone. I was having about 5 hot flashes an hour, couldn't sleep well, and was losing bladder control (I've exercised strenuously my whole life and this was a shock for me. I had my kids thru Csection, so that wasn't it). The pills worked (no more bladder problems), but I had breakthru bleeding and I was hoping to find something better. The patch was an improvement because the skin delivery system bypasses the liver (I was told). Thru reading books like this one, I came across a doctor who is the head of the ob/gyn dept. at Vanderbilt Hospital in Tennessee who developed his own delivery system of bio-identical hormones in DROPS. He also throws testosterone into the drops if a blood test shows that you need it. His name is Dr. Joel Hargrove and he will work with your own personal physician to get the proper dosage worked out. I found him in the book The Wisdom of Menopause by Christiane Northrup, MD, which I'm sure Amazon sells (look in the resource section in the back, chapter 5). I'd give you the lab's telephone #, but I don't think that Amazon allows that. I love the drops. I can take a minimum amount because if I take too little I get hot flashes, and if I take too much I get breakthru bleeding. I only need to take one drop a day. It's not covered by my medical plan (the dolts!), but it's cheaper than my co-pays would be. And the testosterone is great! Once I started on that, my sex drive came back and my hair, which had been getting very thin, filled out again. I had to look around a bit to find a doctor who was "with it" enough to help me.
Every woman 30+ should read this. .......2007-02-01
A must read for all women and anyone who cares about women.

The book gave detailed info on the effects of menopause and perimenopause. The concept is interesting but more studies and research are needed before you blindly jump on the bandwagon and starting taking bioidentical hormones. If taking pharmaceutical hormones elevates your risk of breast cancer then taking any extra hormones could be equally harmful. Both the pharmaceutical companies and 'natural'health companies make lots of money, so one pointing the finger at the other is laughable. At least the pharmaceutical companies are regulated. The book is a good source of information on menopause though and for that the money is well spent.

Customer Reviews:
Great recipes, great food!.......2007-08-12
I've used recipes from this book many times over years of canoe-camping. I've never been disappointed. Many have the notations "A hit!" and "VG!!" and "Delicious!" beside them. Friends always ask for the recipes.
If your pack carries 60+lbs..........2007-08-01
The ideas in this book are pretty good, though I wouldn't necessarily consider this a book for 'backpackers' - more likely for those who are car camping, and who don't mind some extra weight.
Well-fed.......2007-03-09
Of all the sources of backpacking recipies that I have found, this is by far the best. Not only are most of the recipies reasonable, easy and tasty, but her many suggestions regarding saving money and easy planning are terrific.
The Hungry Backpacker.......2005-08-10
This is a must have book for the backpacker. It is full of great recipes and cooking hints. I would recommend this to anyone packing thier own food.
You can't go wrong with June.......2004-07-11
I like my backcountry meals to come together easily at home from easily purchased ingredients, to be very lightweight, and to cook quickly in camp so they don't waste time and fuel. At the same time, I can't stand most packaged meals and find that simply adding boiling water to a packaged meal yields only UFOs: Unidentifiable (and inedible) Floating Objects. I'm not interested in wasting time, money, and weight on being "gourmet" in the backcountry. *The Well-Fed Backpacker* by June Fleming strikes the perfect balance for me. For her recipes that I like the best, the shopping is easy, the preparation at home and in camp is easy, the weight is light (especially Cheesy Bacospuds), and the taste is good to great. This is the most practical recipe book for backpackers that I know of.
