Love in the cloisters.......2006-02-06
Following a weddding feast where a young man has been entertaining the guests with songs and tumbling, the unconscious body of the host, a parsimonious goldsmith, is found, near his empty treasure chest. A hue and cry is called, blaming the minstrel and an angry, drunken crowd pursues him to the Abbey of Shrewsbury, where he claims sanctuary. The Abbot is forced by custom to grant him food and shelter for 40 days, but urges Cadfael to investigate the claims made against the minstrel. The household of the goldsmith is not a very happy one with the ageing daughter of the house forced into the role of unpaid and unappreciated servant, without the chance of making a life of her own, and with the grandmother as mean as her son, carping and acid tongued. An extremely nosy neighbour of the goldsmith has determined who was responsible fot the theft and seeks to profit by this knowledge, but is murdered before he can tell anyone his suspicions. Cadfael, as usual, patiently sifts through all the tiny clues which would probably escape the attention of anyone else, and fights hard to clear the minstrel's name. It's another Brother Cadfael triumph of love and justice over the evil doers.
Very fun read!.......2004-04-15
If you are a person that just wants to enjoy a fun book and likes historical mystery's, this book is for you. Similar to "The Name of the Rose" in context, but much easier to understand! (although "The Name of the Rose" is great also) I would recommend this book to anyone. Reads very quick and characters are understandable. Have fun!
A finely honed tale of mediaeval intrigue.......2001-11-26
Barely four weeks past Easter of the Year of Our Lord 1140, with Shrewsbury and all its region secure within the King's peace, the conventual peace of Matins within the great Abbey church of St Peter and St Paul is suddenly and most rudely shattered. Hunted and hounded by an angry mob into the comparative safety of sanctuary within the House of God, a terrified young man, accused of robbery and murder, and closely followed by his accusers and would-be executioners, disturbs the midnight office of the good monks of Shrewsbury. And so starts the seventh Chronicle of Brother Cadfael, in which the mediaeval sleuth finds himself with yet another wrong to right, by once more putting his mind to the solving of one of Shrewsbury's small mysteries.
In this particular case, the mystery is no greatly complex affair but it is, in any case, largely subsidiary to Ellis Peters' painting of a finely detailed picture of life in twelfth century England, and more especially here, within a moderately wealthy family household. There are some unexpected twists and developments along the way, though, and there is certainly nothing predictable about the way the story works itself out, although the ending is no particular surprise either.
In some respects, this is one of the best of the Cadfael books. Its opening pages contain some of Ellis Peters' finest writing, with her descriptions of the running to ground of young Liliwin and the reactions of Abbot Radulfus being quite hair-raising in their potency. The tale unfolds at a sure and steady pace thereafter, too, ensuring that it is always difficult to put the book down, right up until the final exciting, and rather tear-jerking, denouement.
Rich and rewarding.......2000-07-07
Ellis Peters, as always, creates a tense, yet delicately crafted, net of secrets and thoughts, and a solid and careful detangler of mystery in her beloved Brother Cadfael. I found the contrast of the pairs of the lovers in the end not syruppy, as one reviewer noted, but a fascinating study in the ribbons of pain and hate and even evil that can be woven through love. The two pairs are contrasts as clear as shadow and light, yet the source is the same - the flame of love is what creates the darkness of the shadows and the fire-glory of the light. You wish you could untangle them, give back the darkness to the night where it belongs, but in this book the heart turned awry cannot grow back, cannot untwist itself, and is thrown into the neverending dark. The reason I don't find it syruppy is that I think that while the focus seems to be on the fate of the two stubborn, delicate youngsters in love, Peters is really intent upon the other pair, the pair of lovers whose love brought them darkness instead of light. In any case, this book is like most of Peters' others - a finely texturized and woven tapestry of history and people in all the colors of blood and earth and that long-ago sky.
Great action in this one.......1998-11-02
The story line is full of surprises and excellent suspense. The ending isn't up to Peters' standards, though. Enjoyable reading none the less.

Derek Jacobi returns heard but not seen as BROTHER CADFAEL in a quite interesting plot-twister!.......2005-08-17
I have always believed that the BBC made the finest adaptations for radio and television, and indeed the BROTHER CADFAEL series is no exception; Bert Coules (who most recently adapted Sherlock Holmes for BBC radio) and the fine actor Philip Madoc brought Cadfael to life in three adaptations which are well worth listening to if you can: MONKS HOOD, THE VIRGIN IN THE ICE and DEAD MAN'S RANSOM. However, Sir Derek Jacobi was an excellent Cadfael for television ... even if some of the teleplays didn't quite follow the plot of the original novels. Acorn Audio did something quite extraordinary when they turned the audio tracks of the four teleplays of the first Cadfael TV series into an audio series, adding a narrator to fill in the gaps and adding some slight commentary on the action which could not be seen on an audiotape; in doing so, they tightened up the narrative to keep the stories moving at a good clip so that the listener would not lose interest, and Stephen Flynn's narration is well-read and well-written. This story, while admitedly not one of my personal favorites in the series, has enough twists and turns in the plot to keep the viewer (or listener in this case!) rivetted, and I have to say in this recording's favor that the telepay follows the book very closely, more so than many of those in the TV series. I am sorry that Acorn Audio hasn't adapted the rest of the televised Cadfael stories into this format, and the only grievance I have is that the cast of characters is not read out at the end of each story (all we get to know is that Sir Derek Jacobi plays Brother Cadfael, when there are some fine actors in each of the stories). This is something entirely new, coming somewhere in between actual radio drama and books-on-tape, and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the Brother Cadfael series. The listener will not lose anything by not seeing the action on a TV screen, and the acting you will HEAR combined with the narration will definitely provide an ejoyable listening experience.

Cadfael.......2000-08-21
-Derek Jacobi takes the lead in the role of Brother Cadfael. In the Cadfael box set, four television episodes are soundtrack recorded with a narrator. Vocally, these four stories are wonderful pieces of fiction. However, even with a narrator, it sounds as if we are missing something. The production values are excellent, since these are the Brother Cadfael TV series which ran on PBS . . . But on audio, it sounds hollow . . .
Product Description
Brother Cadfael, a twelfth-century Benedictine monk living in an abbey in Shrewsbury, England is not only a devout man of the cowl, but also a slueth of deadly accuracy. In addition to his official duties as the monastery's herbalist, Cadfael finds much unofficial business to occupy his time -- like solving some of Shropshire's most perplexing murder cases. From The Leper of Saint Giles, in which he must unmask the killer responsible for two dead bodies and a marriage that is never to be, to Monk's Hood, which revolves around an unexplained poisoning, Cadfael -- with the aid of Sheriff Hugh Beringar and in spite of the abbey's meddling Prior -- repeatedly proves a most resourceful detective. In The Sanctuary Sparrow and One Corpse Too Many, Cadfael is again called upon to expose cold-blooded killers and save lives -- all while trying to honor his monastic vows. Filled with suspensful plotting and rich in period detail, these medieval whodunnits are truly crime classics. This special QPB edition features all four Brother Cadfael books adapted for television and shown on PBS in 1995 as part of it's "Mystery" series.
Product Description
On the three steps to the parish altar lay sprawled some poor wretch flattened beneath a surge of trampling, battering foes, all hacking away with fist and boot, happily in such a tangle that comparatively few of their kicks and blows got home. All Cadfael could see of the quarry was a thin arm and a fist hardly bigger than a child's, that reached out of the chaos to grip the edge of the altar-cloth with life and death desperations" - From the Sanctuary Sparrow. Standing among the choir stalls for the night ritual of Matins, the Shrewsbury Brothers seemed indistinguishable from the wooden icons that surrounded them - fixed, enduring, and clothed in a severe dignity. Their prayers were happily and for once in keeping with the new peace that had recently fallen over the countryside since Easter, the year of Our Lord 1140. But as the Brothers petitioned, a soft tremor moved through the room, causing Brother Anselm to stumble in his chants, and the rest of them to feel the threat before they saw it. In seconds their repose was effectively shattered by the clamor of an approaching mob which hurled itself through the parish door and into the sanctuary -angry hounds in pursuit of their helpless quarry. Terrified and in tatters, the young prey clutched at the altar-cloth, grasping for mercy in the only sure place he might find it. In this seventh in a continuing series, Brother Cadfael assists county sheriff Hugh Beringar in proving the innocence of a penniless juggler accused of robbery and attempted murder.

Interesting.......2002-12-10
Ms. Wilder creates a world which she expounds upon throughout her next two novels, Yorath the Wolf & the Summer King. This is not the best-written, nor the best conceived fantasy which I've ever had the privilege of encountering. However, if you have the time & happen to encounter it, the I'd recommend reading this series. The books have their draggy parts, but overall there are some very interesting premises, imaginative techniques employed & can be sometimes very unpredictable.
Beautiful, Poetic, and Deserves To Be Read.......2002-06-06
Being the starting book of The Rulers of Hylor trilogy it is incredible. The history and beauty to these books are amazing, the way the author wrote them is so wonderful. It's one of the best fantasy books I have ever read. I often wonder how come these books aren't more popular or known?

An enjoyable read.......1999-10-28
A well written, well characterised book. There are little hooks and clues which only become apparent with reading the rest of the Rulers of Hylor trilogy, so I would reccommend reading all three, not just this one.
Book Description
Dr. Duane Graveline, former astronaut, aerospace medical research scientist, flight surgeon, and family doctor, given Lipitor(r) to lower his cholesterol, loses his short-term memory for several hours. He discontinues the drug, but a year later at his annual NASA physical is urged to resume it at half the dose. Six weeks later he loses both short and retrograde memories for half a day and is diagnosed in the ER with transient global amnesia (TGA).
Appalled by the medical community's ignorance of the cognitive side effects of the statin drugs, he begins searching for answers to his traumatic experience. Lipitor(r), Thief of Memory, Statin Drugs and the Misguided War On Cholesterol is the "scary, appealingly written" account of his findings.
Customer Reviews:
A must read before starting statins.......2007-09-11
Having witnessed side effects from long term use in a loved one and my own short-lived experience of Lipitor, this book is a must read. The author has legitimate credentials from the medical community and NASA. His story and the cases he reports of transient global amnesia are beyond frightening. This information more than supported the reasons I discontinued Lipitor after a few days. Don't be a human guinea pig for pharmaceuticals.
MEDICAL DOCTOR SLAMS MOST POPULAR MEDICINES!.......2007-08-01
About a month ago my only vague conception of what cholesterol was involved me thinking of a toxic chemical from meat, cheese, eggs and whatever. I thought it should be as low as you can possibly get it. My son told me I was totally backwards on this. He said I could email NinetyPlus4Life@Aol.com and ask for a free subscription to these periodic articles called the 90+ newsletters because currently it's on cholesterol and cholesterol drugs. I'd considered taking one of these statin drugs at one point like Lipitor. Concerned that maybe I was missing something, I wrote to the author-JD, at that email address and asked to join his free list. Then I get this report on cholesterol from him that must be 30 pages long. I couldn't believe it. I DIDN'T believe some of it but here he is mentioning Dr. Graveline-an American Astronaut AND Medical Doctor who wrote a book on why these drugs are horrible and cholesterol isn't your enemy. In addition to that, the report had something like twenty other medical doctors that think these drugs are rarely needed if ever and extremely dangerous and why. It's NOT JUST DUANE GRAVELINE. He's not one man who happened to have a bad reaction to a normally benign pill. Apparently there are hundreds if not thousands of doctors of all kinds around the world in disagreement with the theory that cholesterol should be lower and lower and God knows how many patients who were mentally broken down from the whole class of drugs designed to lower it. Now that I've had the chance to read some of the material referenced in the 90+ report and check up on the doctors quoted and get some of their books, I'm a complete convert and nobody's ever putting ME on those drugs. I know that Cholesterol is a nutrient now- not poison- and that it can get too low and thanks to Dr. Graveline uniquely legitimizing certain concerns with his own personal and not-so-uncommon experience, I'm quite sure statins can damage your brain too. It's no wonder, not only does it cut down on the cholesterol but look at everything else it cuts down on for Pete's sake! No thanks Doc. I read mom some of this stuff over the phone and she might end up talking it over with her own doctor. I'd like to know what he'd say...I'd like to see what ANYBODY'S doctor has to say about these opposing views or if they have any clue that they exist with a ton of evidence to back them up. Doctor Graveline is a really respected and accomplished man and because of this drug at one point, he was in such a state that he couldn't recognize his own wife! Does his own doctor even believe it at first? Noooo way, a while after he quits he is strongly urged and persuaded to go back because how could a healthy drug hurt you, right? Well, check out Dr. Graveline's book and read about his recurring nightmare after he went back for round two. Get this book. Get a subscription to that newsletter like I did too while you're at it. LEARN about this stuff. Don't let yourself and your loved ones be fooled by some ignorant crap theory that puts millions of people each year on poison for no good reason!
Excellent book, by a courageous Doctor and Scientist!.......2007-07-03
Dr.Graveline does an excellent job of standing up to the Medical establishment (of which he is a member), and exposes the false claims of the Drug Companies in regards to the Statin Drugs...We need more Doctors to stand up and face down the FDA and the drug companies on this important issue!!
Two members of my family took these drugs for 6 mo. My 66 yr old sister almost lost her life, and my 42 yr. old Daughter(a CPA) lost a great deal of her memory....They are both on the mend after 4 months of being off the Statins, but both have a long way to go on the road back to good health! We stood up to the Tabacco Companies and came out on top...It's time to expose Big PHarma for what it really is! Toxic and deadly! Sincerely, Patricia M. Dunn
PS: Thank You Dr.Graveline!
Scary but informative.......2007-04-11
Excellent read. Scary but informative. A medical doctor (and astronaut) explains his experience of taking Lipitor (a 10 billion dollar baby of the pharmaceutical world) and the resultant loss of memory. Put this on your reading list if you or any family member or friend is taking Lipitor or any statin drugs.
Eye opener for anyone who wants to know what your Doctors aren't telling you!.......2007-04-03
I purchased this book, because I am a sufferer of the side effects of the SATAN drug Lipitor. Dr. Graveline is very reputable, credentialed and also a sufferer of Lipitors, unpublished Side Effects. I highly reccommend his book, Lipitor: Thief of Memory. A+++++

Great concept, sub-par execution.......2007-09-27
There is no real "story" to this book, except for the gimmicky premise that the protagonist's brother is loose and, given his reputation as a "moocher" (their word), she has to go find him by eating her way from one house to another. The idea of seeing what families of diverse backgrounds eat is a great one, and even more fun the idea that the staple food is a common one, but the plot is non-existent. Treat it more like a recipe book or a reference book, where each page is distinct, and you won't be so disappointed. Not very attractive illustrations.
Breaking bread together........2006-07-18
I disagree with the reviewer here who complained about this book not showing cultural unity. How much more unified can you get than a boy sharing meals at his friends houses? If we want to promote understanding others cultures, you could hardly start at a better place than breaking bread together. Food is one of the ways we show love to our families and others. My children and I thought the book was great, and will be exploring other, similar titles.
Nice attempt to address multiracial issues to youth, but..........2005-01-10
...the book fails to address our multicultural society as a whole contingent. The story follows a young white girl while she explores the diversity of her society, but does not work towards unifying the groups she meets together.
For some of you, my criticism might seem picky (which I admittingly will agree to), but as a person of color who has grown up in very diverse neighborhoods and has been collecting children's books on multiculturalism, there is a large absence of material that tries to unify people of color -- some of whom need a lot of healing and mending.
Other than that, the animation in the book is wonderful.
Its True!.......2003-03-04
This book shows children that we may all be from different cultures, but in the simplest ways we are very much the same. It is a good first day of school book, or good multicultural education book!
Want Your Kids to Eat Rice?.......2001-10-19
Read this story to them. Then photocopy the recipe pages. Eating and preparing international rice recipes then become playacting, for this book is all about how, in a multicultural neighborhood, in one delightful evening, all of the households prepare special, spicy and indigenous dishes with this one simple staple. It is a story of our differences. It is a story of our similaries. Moreover, it is a celebration of how rice is the canvas upon which we paint our works of culinary imagination.
