China goes on a retreat.......2004-08-18
Herb-shop owner China Bayles is worn out after the Christmas season, and living with her boyfriend McQuaid and his son Brian has caused its own stress in her life. Because of this China eagerly agrees to accompany her ex-nun friend Maggie on a retreat to the monastary where Maggie used to be. She anticipates two weeks of quiet, solitude, and the opportunity to meditate on the course she wants her life to take. When she arrives, she finds things to be very different than she had pictured. The monastary had been heavily endowed by the wealthy woman who donated the land and she intended for it to be used to house the nuns and to grow a special kind of garlic. Recently the old convent had been merged with another group of nuns and the new group wants to build a large meeting center with all the amenities. The sisters are deadlocked over this issue and it is causing strife between the two factions. Soon, disturbing letters are being sent to the nuns and some fires wreak havoc in the convent. Also some items begin to disappear and two elderly nuns die mysteriously. If this isn't enough, China encounters an old boyfriend from the days when she was an attorney in Houston. She is sorely tempted to resume her relationship with him, despite her attachment to McQuaid. All of these things cause a tangled web of intrigue which China unravels, after a few false starts. In a long-running series like this, it's always refreshing to have the books move to another setting from time to time. This is another good read from Susan Wittig Albert.
China Bayles on retreat?.......2002-04-10
In Rueful Death, China finds herself involuntarily and unwittingly tricked into using her amateau detective skills. China has decided to take a two-week retreat at St. T's convent in order to wind down from the busy holidays. While there, she is asked to look into a series of fires. This book is different from Albert's others in such that you don't really want to choose a suspect, because who wants to think that a nun, or anybody working at a convent, is behind all the trouble? China also happens to run into a hunky ex-beau that she knew from her lawyer days. China doesn't get much rest on this retreat, but she does catch the firebug. Pretty much par for course in this series.
Get thee to a nunnery!.......2001-07-07
China has survived the Christmas rush at her herb shop but is sadly in need of some private time. So off she goes to a nunnery! Together with her friend Maggie, she heads off to a remote nunnery where the sisters grow amazing garlic. Instead of the peace and quiet she longs for, China finds herself embroiled in a contentious power struggle between two groups of nuns working to combine two disparate orders into one. As the sister's jockey for position, fires break out and several mysterious deaths occur. If that wasn't enough, China runs into an old beau and the heat is still there. As she works to solve the nunnery mystery she is making major life choices for herself. Once again, I enjoyed the ride and learned more about herbs and gardening.
I agree, Not Her Best.......2001-04-13
I was so excited to find this series, and I've enjoyed all the books so far. I enjoyed this one too, but it was not her best. I really missed Ruby. We only see her at the beginning, and there were no real harmless eccentrics in this one, and I think that is what Ms. Albert does so well. Also, the mysteries were a little simple compared to her other plots. I will continue to read the series because I love China Bayles so much. I'm also curious to see what she does with her life after she has reflected in the nunnery.

Probably Smedman's best SR novel........1999-09-19
Of all her SR novels, The Lucifer Deck comes closest to capturing the atmosphere of the Shadowrun universe - and the one where she keeps her more annoying inclinations/idosyncracies best in check (caviat - I haven't read Blood Sport yet, so I cannot be difinative, but I have read her other SR novels).
Set in Seattle and involving more "down to earth" issues than are often dealt with in recient SR novels (which I found to be a plus - lately it seems the novel writers enchew commonality and go only for storylines involving the grandest themes, personages, and more high profile threats of the SR universe). This approach brought the streets of Seattle, the level at which most Runners make their livelyhood, to life.
I like it!.......1998-11-27
One of the more realistic shadowrun books I've read, and written in a distinctive style that I enjoyed a lot. What I really appreciated about this book is how it tied in with the SR Companion. It definitely made me look at media types in a new light. While by no means Tolkien or Gibson-esque material, I think it is deserving of every SR player's reading time.
Good background but bad story.......1998-09-12
I liked the way the author showed racism in the world of Shadowrun. That was the only strongpoint of the book though. The story was just plain stupid: how many people are going to save the world 'as we know it' in RPG novels? The author should have used a different plot to highlight the racial undertones of the novel.
This is a great book........1998-07-30
The Lucifer Deck is a very good book! A great story line and solid characters make this one a winner. This would be a good book for the first time shadowruner. Two thumbs up!
And they call this Shadowrun?.......1998-06-29
How FASA ever let Smedman write for Shadowrun is beyond my comprehension! This book was awful. Shadowrun is supposed to be about Shadowrunners not orc runaways who whine and cry and pretend to run the shadows. And what is this reporter stuff? Reporters are not supposed to be heros in SR! While they might help a Shadowrunner every once and awhile they are not Shadowrunners themselves. And could we please not suffer through another down on their luck nobody saves the world load of ..... well you get the picture. I didn't like it!

Thank you Dr. Swank and John Pageler.......2007-09-06
5 Years ago, I was diagnosed with MS. I was not willing to give my life over to the pharmaceutical companies of the world, nor shut off my immune system, or give up my active lifestyle. I saw a Naturopath, who told me about the Swank diet, and I read a fabulous book by John Pageler called NEW HOPE REAL HELP FOR PEOPLE WITH MS (no longer in print, but availabe on his website). In his book, John talks about how the Swank diet kept him healthy, upright and mobile for 40+ years with the dis-ease. So, I bought the book.
I credit Dr. Swank and John Pageler and my Naturopath Dr. Paterson with being the backbone of my healthy a-symptomatic life! Everyone with MS should read this book. It helps more than you can realize. I only wish I could convince more people (who are on the drugs) to try it!
Interesting but dated.......2007-07-29
I read this book and found that the information was historically correct but much of the information was outdated. My husband has MS and while reading the material, I disagreed often with the information presented. We will still try the diet, because with this disease we will try any diet that claims to work. Over half of the book is recipes and outdated graphs.
in remission, thanks to Dr Swank.......2007-07-07
I started the diet (very strictly) 4 years ago, right after being diagnosed with MS. I said 'no thanks' to the interferon drugs the neurologists wanted me to take. I haven't suffered any new exacerbations since, I can even say I feel better than ever before (this is a most healthy diet) and would go on eating this way even if they found a cure. Because there is no cure for MS (yet) and Dr Swank never suggests that the diet he advocates is a cure, he merely states it will slow down progression (which is also what the drugs claim). It's not about money either, as you can find the guidelines to the diet for free online: [..]
The medical community (at least part of it, because Dr Swank is a neurologist himself) claims the diet has never been proven to work, but the main reason for this is that it is impossible to conduct a double blind placebo test on a diet (you cannot give fake fat free food to a group of people and hope they will not notice). While the diet is the fruit of extensive and well documented research. A great companion read is Dr George Jelinek's Taking Control of Multiple Sclerosis (more up to date and confirming Dr Swank's conclusions).
So, if you have MS, like me, give the diet a try (but don't expect to notice a difference over a couple of days, give it some months), in the worst case it won't help your MS condition (though it helped mine and that of many other people), but it won't cost you a penny, it is healthy and has no side effects.
It's your body, don't leave it all to the pharmaceutical industry to take care of it.
The Multiple Sclerosis Diet Book.......2007-06-27
this is a comprehensive book that gives the reader a deeper understanding of what is happening to the body and how to minimize exacerbations of the symptoms. This diet would be extremely difficult for anyone who is not already comfortable with a diet consisiting of low-fat foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, and minimal amount of dairy.
Thank you Dr.Swank!.......2007-05-15
Dr Swank's MS Diet Book has been a God send! It's informative, constructive.....I treat it like a bible! Would recommend it to all MS patients! Thank you Dr. Swank!

Helpful for Transverse Myelitis patients.......1999-09-23
I have transverse myelitis, and am constantly searching for any published information on transverse myelitis. In my search, I included information on MS, since it is so closely related to TM. Most of the symptoms and treatments of symptoms are similar in MS and TM, and I found this book to be the most up-to-date, and a valuable reference guide to medications prescribed, how to understand why I am experiencing "sensations", and other questions that I have had. I carry this book wherever I go as a reference "manual". It is written in plain english, so it is easy to read and easy to understand.
For the newly diagnosed and those close to them.......1999-08-26
I found this book extremely helpful as I am being evaluated for MS. Part of the proceeds benefit the MS Society and the author clearly wants to present the disease as he knows it- not as some harmless diagnosis nor some mythical death sentence. Should my possible diagnosis become definitive, I plan to send this book to my family members as what I believe is an accurrate description of life with MS and what lies in store.
"Just the Facts, Mam", without Telling You How to Live-It.......1998-02-12
This book gives the newly diagnosed or the newly interested person the facts of MS. It does not attempt to make you feel good, but leaves you knowing the truth, which for many is what they want to know. It tells you the (1995) treatments (needs update in this regard as new effective treatments continue to become available), gives you accurate stats on the likelihood of progression and other facts you want to know- like genetic susceptibility; tells you the myths about treatments that an MS'r is likely to run into, like curing with diet, vitamins, minerals and other "treatments" long since proven as having no curative value. It also gives helpful symptom relief data. It's a no-nonsense but thoughtful explanation of the truth- Thomas P. Anderson, Ph.D., Psychologist w/MS 10 Yrs.

Customer Reviews:
good tips, good information, good recipes!.......2006-12-23
this book has LOTS of ideas on how to prepare meals for your kid that are healthier than pre-packaged, store-bought crap. i couldn't believe it when i prepared the spinach and cheese souffle for my 13 month old and she devoured it. (usually she doesn't like eggs, cheese, or anything green). she also really likes the cheesy lentil sweet potatoes, which blew me away! it has been an incredibly valuable resource when it comes to nutrition information for kids. most of the recipes are pretty bland (low-sodium/low-sugar), but bland is what my kid seems to like. its a really great cookbook, the only reason i gave it 4 stars is because some of the recipes involve a lot of ingrients and take way too long to prepare.
Not what I expected.......2006-12-18
I bought this book as a gift for someone who has a toddler. I thought it would provide good ideas for dinnertime meals. I was disappointed when I looked through the book at the recipes. Although some looked very child friendly, such as chicken nuggets and smoothies, some looked like they were more geared towards adults. Sardine bruchetta, walnut pesto, and sweet potatoes with lentils and bacon all sound delicious, but may be more appropriate for the parent's tastes. I was so disappointed about what I read that I couldn't bring myself to give it as a gift even though the book is beautifully put together with great pictures.
