DIVINE INTERVENTIONHow do you make God laugh? Tell Him you've got a plan. That's what Sister Mary Helen reminds herself when she sets out to start a new life-as a volunteer in a women's homeless shelter. A savvy octogenarian with an adventurous streak, Mary Helen is no stranger to the shady side of San Francisco's hilly streets. So when a young resident at the Refuge shelter is found dead, Mary Helen makes it her business to solve the murder. Soon this lady of the Order gets herself into a holy mess involving corrupt local politicians, a prostitution ring, and a tangled web of private-eyes, police officers, and the 'refugees' themselves. Mary Helen calls upon her beloved sisters at St. Francis College for salvation, but it's going to take a lot of prayers to protect Mary Helen from the dangerous characters-and shocking confessions-that come in her wake....

Nicely Done.......2006-11-28
When a new president takes over Mount Saint Francis College, Sister Mary Helen, afraid of losing her job, decides to quit her job and volunteer at a women's shelter with Sister Anne. The job is quite a change and challenge for Sister Mary Helen and she is tired but happy. Happy that is until she finds the badly beaten body of one of the young women who frequented the shelter. The last thing Sister Mary Helen wants is to be involved in yet another murder investigation, but she has no choice. The police are hoping to make a quick arrest but it soon becomes apparent that the case is far more complex than anyone realizes and Mary Helen's own life is in great danger.
"Requiem at the Refuge" is a delightful cozy mystery. Sister Mary Helen, a nun in her seventies, is a refreshing heroine who is willing to admit that she doesn't know everything. Author Sister Carol Anne O'Marie, a nun in real life, does a wonderful job depicting the seamier side of life and what life is like for prostitutes, former prostitutes, and their pimps. She also gives peeks into the life of the police investigating the case and I was as anxious as Kate Murphy to find out what was wrong with her partner Dennis Gallagher. The mystery itself is nicely plotted, with some gigantic red herrings, although it's pretty obvious all along who the murderer is. I was a bit perplexed as to why the murderer would so willingly turn over the murder weapon when it easily could have been hidden, but that's a minor quibble.
This was my first time reading a mystery featuring Sister Mary Helen, but it won't be my last. Nicely done.
Nice quiet read.......2006-08-10
I look at books like this as palate cleaners, they're nice little reads that require little thought or effort and they can be read in a few hours. I have always enjoyed Sister Mary Helen stories because they are written by a retired nun who resides in SF and having lived there it's nice to read references to places I know as she gives a lot of detail to locations. This story involves the murder of a young prositute who's body is of course discovered by Sister Mary Helen on her second day working at a homeless womens refuge operated by a younger nun in her order. There are a couple of possible suspects and I do find it humerous that Sister Carol Anne O'Marie writes of a world that must be a little foreign to her even if she has worked in the Tenderloin it's still observations and not "having lived the life". I like these little stories and if you're looking for a light harmless read you could do a lot worse than this series. If you like gory or mind twisting mysteries then pass on this book.
send for sister eileen.......2001-10-02
having read all the sister mary helen books, i have to say i was a little disappointed in this one - we definitely need to bring sister eileen back from ireland - being a native san franciscan, i have always loved it as a backdrop for the stories, and this book seemed lacking in the ambiance i expect - otherwise, it was okay - i guess you can only have so many murders at mt. saint francis...
Good, But...........2000-10-06
I've been reading this series since the beginning and I've always enjoyed it. This installement is no exception. However, I was very bothered by one thing . The way the African-American characters talked. I'm African-American and I've never heard other African-Americans sound as ignorant as the characters in this book. Just because someone is black, poor, and homeless doesn't mean they automatically have to say such things as "I be" , "you be", and "whats a matter?" Maybe if one or two characters talked this way I wouldn't have been as bothered but they all talked like this. Otherwise, I enjoyed the book.
This nun is murder on the cops.......2000-04-20
Another lighhearted romp through murder set in the Bay area. It's a delightful read. The characters are real, from the homeless women to the nuns. Sister Carol Ann knows the underside of the San Francisco landscape and the reality of religious life today. Gentle and fun.

Super Reader.......2007-08-30
Hawkmoon, Duke of Koln, is a resistance leader in the fight against the Dark Empire. Knowing this, the Mad God, with the power of the amulet of the Runestaff, arranges to kidnap Hawkmoon's wife, Yisselda.
The Eternal Champion has no option but to try and get her back, even in the face of the Mad God's power.
Bleak, offensive background, cliché characters, LAZY, random.......2004-12-16
Not a lot here to really make this book shine, and a few things that let it down.
Very lazy plotting - we just get thrown about here and there. That could be part of the fun, and there is something of the D & D silly campaign where a hundred unlikely events are meant to happen to our intrepid adventurers. Still it gets a bit too silly for me, and I'm getting to not really care that much about the Warrior in Jet and Gold who can just turn up magically along with any era shaping magical item. Same with the deadly foe - far too lazy in just saying, "Oh, sure, they all got routed and defeated, um, and a million of them got killed ... but, ah, NOW there's, um TWO MILLION, and the bad guy didn't really die, and they're back!". I mean, who cares? Either something magical suddenly shows up that will defeat them all, or, even if you do, suddenly they'll just somehow regroup to be back to threaten again in the next sequel. The heroes are embarrassingly standard in the way they can fight all day hugely outnumbered with dwindling remains of their army being cut down around them, but, of course, not suffer a scratch and have nothing more than a bit of fatigue. Yisselda as heroine becomes utterly clichéd: here, let me just stand to one side being feminine and either helpless or emotionally/sexually supportive. Oh, and Hawkmoon starts getting all broody - save me from broody heroes! Ugh.
I was just about never `in' the story, I was always outside looking in, and frequently shaking my head at the level of guff.
The casual background of atrocities gets a bit sickening after a while, and also feels lazy and contrived, "Oh, yeah, THIS guy was so bad, he, um, got people's babies and killed them. (Hang on, I've done that one). And then he ate them! (Oh, done that one too). In front of the mother!!! (Yeah, that'll do)." This gets offensive pretty quick, especially when I think it's meant to be, you know, hard core - Moorcock saying his bad guys are, well, really bad - it's spotty nerds who've never punched someone in their life trying to impress each other with fight scenes. The author feels nothing for these throwaway victims, we're not really meant to either, they're just a bit of local colour (cf. the similarly blithe use of comic atrocity in Goodkind's second rate Wizard's First Rule). Thus D'Averc can simply flip from villain to hero because all those people he blithely killed were, remember, only MINOR characters.
It's all pretty bleak: I could maybe cope with the lazy plotting if we were having some fun on the way (as Fafard and the Grey Mouser at times do without this oppressive background), but the only hope of the book is the action. It's hard to care about the action when we know the author can and will just randomly pull out something from nowhere with no reference to a wider world (oh, hey, here's an ancient civilisation with vastly superior technological weapons we've stumbled onto. Phew, that was lucky).
So, after giving The Jewel in the Skull a bit of a rap I'm not so keen to move onto volume 3 (except to work out whether I should just clear this stuff from my bookshelves altogether).
2½*
Hawkmoon vol. 2: the series continues.......2003-04-05
Michael Moorcock, The Mad God's Amulet (DAW, 1968)
The adventures of Dorian Hawmoon, last duke of Koln, continue in The Mad God's Amulet, the second novel in the Chronicle of the Runestaff. Hawkmoon, with the immediate dangers of the first novel neutralized, wants nothing more than to return to the Kamarg and his friends. Of course, this is fantasy literature, where nothing is simple. He gets sidetracked a couple of times, we spend some more time in the company of the mysterious Warrior in Jet and Gold, things blow up, old enemies return, new enemies crop up, and then there's the Mad God of the title. All of which, of course, happens at the same time that the full might of Granbretan's army marches on the Kamarg, the last European outpost of independence against the depraved King-Emperor Huon.
Fun stuff. Very easy reading. All the womderful things I said about the first book still apply. Unfortunately, so do the pervasive typographical errors in the DAW editions. Whoever was asleep at the wheel the first time must have lapsed into a coma, because they are even more frequent here. I despair, at this point, of any legibility at all by the time I make it to the seventh book in the series.
Look for corrected editions, but definitely read this series. *** 1/2
Pretty good.......2001-03-11
This is the weakest in the Runestaff series, but it's still pretty good. Moorcock's witty and imaginative writing draws you right in and sweeps you along.
Not a lot to recommend........2000-12-09
This series is my first experience reading Moorcock. I am usually an avid reader, but I kept finding myself making excuses to do anything except get back to this book. The characters lack sympathy and depth. There are plenty of battles, but the plot stringing them together feels stale and sketchy. I'll probably finish the series out of sheer stubbornness, but I wouldn't recommend this book or the series to someone who is not already a fan of the author.

100 Promises to My Baby.......2005-11-03
Although I bought this book as a gift, I did glance through the various chapters to develop a feeling of the author's message.
I found the book beautifully written with a depth of feeling that could only come from the love of a mother for her child. There was a spiritual dimension moving through the pages of the book which enhanced the message and the feeling of closeness, yet the words were those of common sense and practical nature.
These thoughts, so well spoken by Mallika Chopra, are the thoughts that all mothers wish for their children. Mallika Chopra shows the talent and the gift of her father.
Completely Unrealistic.......2005-09-10
I found this book completely unreaslistic, but what can one expect from an author who was raised in, and continues to live in extreme privilege? I grew tired of reading about Mallika Chopra's life of servants, nannies, and cleaning ladies. I'm quite certain that if all mothers in the world (including those in North America) led lives of such privilege, they too could write books such as these with completely unrealistic expectations about what it is to be a mother. I also did not find anything she said particularly deep, inspirational, aware, thought provoking, or compelling (as other reviewers would lead you to believe).
If you wish to read a feel-good book that sets you up for some sort of "perfect" idyllic (i.e. unrealistic) picture of motherhood, than you'll love this book, though I hear that you can read the same in most Reader's Digest magazines.
Best Baby Book for the Mind and Spirit.......2005-07-21
This book really sheds some light on what it means to be a GREAT parent and what it takes to be a great parent. There are lots of wonderful thought and suggestions, yet they do challenge you to carry through on a few. It is a wonderful book and makes a great baby shower gift. It beats the heck out of giving a boring gift certificate. Chopra has opened my eyes not only to what gifts I can give to my son, but it reminds me of all the wonderful gifts that my parents and grandparents have given me. VERY UPLIFTING!!!
Fantastic book for any mother, or expecting mother.......2005-05-31
I purchased this book for my wife, but really enjoyed reading it myself! This is a great book for anyone who is expecting a new baby, or just as a reminder to anyone with a young child about what a true joy parenting is.
Promises -- Promises!.......2005-05-12
I was skeptical about this book at first (it was a gift), but I found it to be a real treasure. I read it in shorts gulps at night after my now-7-month old drifted off to sleep. It's a beautiful and heartwarming--and very real--emotional tribute to motherhood. I just finished reading another heartwarming--but also very funny--love letter about parenting, "I Sleep At Red Lights: A True Story of Life After Triplets," by Bruce Stockler, which you might also enjoy

One Dish Meals.......2007-03-09
Very easy to follow. All the recipes I have tried have been very tasty. Easy cleanup with one pan. Would recommend this book to anyone especially working women with little time to spare.
No Photographs.......2007-02-03
I'm giving this a 4-star because the recipes looked good and easy. However, I returned this book because it didn't contain any photographs. I know it sounds silly, but I find that having a photo of each meal helps to inspire me when meal-planning.
Great cookbook for someone wanting easy recipes.......2006-08-01
For me, this is a perfect cookbook. I don't have a lot of room in my kitchen. I want meals I can cook quickly. The recipes is food that you pretty much throw together in a hurry. Even the more intricate recipes are easy. These are the kind of meals that women cooked in the 50s, '60s and '70s before the Food Network got middle America women (and yes men too) wanting to be gourmet chefs. If I had the time and especially the room, it would be fun to try more elaborate dishes. But for people who want something more than frozen meals, this is a great cookbook.
Betty Crocker One Dish Means.......2006-03-26

You Gotta Get a Wok and Stir-Fry.......2006-07-16
Seven years ago my husband Dub and I sailed into Whangarai Harbour in New Zealand. On our way in I spied some friends or ours, Gayle and John, who we'd met in Tahiti. They were Kiwis and they were ending their five year circumnavigation, home at last. We anchored close to their boat and later dinghied over for sundowners (usually Coke and Rum). That evening, as usual, we told tall tales of our adventures at sea and we congratulated ourselves on being in this wonderful place at this wonderful time. Later, as we were saying our goodbyes, Gayle gave me her set of the Salamandar Book of Series Cookbooks. They are sold by HP Books in the States as paperbacks. Gayle carried these books around the planet and now she was giving them to me, complete with her notes (written in the books) on the recipes, how well she and John liked certain dishes, which were their favorites, how hard they were to prepare. She knew I was a cook and she thought I'd appreciate them. She was right.
Like all the books in the series "The Book of Stir-Fry Dishes" is about five inches wide and about a foot tall, making them kind of unique among cookbooks. But one should not be put off because of the odd shape, these are real books and you can find mighty darned good recipes in them, some very good recipes in this delightful little stir-fry book, like the Tuna with Spicy Salsa on Page 17 which apparently was Gayle and John's favorite dish in the book. But, of course, I'm not surprised at that, because John was a great fisherman and caught a lot of tuna during their travels in the big blue Pacific. Dub and I are fond of it too, but we really like the Lemon Chicken on Page 38. There is a lot on offer in this little book, stir-fry from around the world, like the Stir-Fried Moussaka on Page 77. If you don't stir-fry you gotta get a wok and start, you'll just love it.

A great introduction to stir-fry and wok cooking........2003-01-05
In its almost 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Stir-Fry Dishes, starts with a brief introduction into the basics of cooking in a wok and a glossary of stir-fry ingredients, and then presents recipe suggestions for all major types of stir-fries, from fish and shellfish to pasta, noodles, rice and even desserts. Special chapters are dedicated to poultry, (red) meat and vegetable stir-fries. Classics such as chow mein, teriyaki and sweet and sour dishes appear next to unique recipes such as coconut pork with lime, five-spice salmon, jasmine-scented shrimp, lobster in mustard cream, Malay curried clams, maple-glazed apples, pork with melon and mango, and toffee pears and mangos.
From Arabian chicken in pita to zucchini with prosciutto, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the wide variety of stir-fry cuisine - and at a relative bargain price, to boot. Also recommended for fans of Asian cooking: this series' installments on Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese and Chinese Cooking, and on Curries and Indian Foods.
Stir-Fry Magic!.......2000-07-25
This book is absolutely wonderful! The recipes are as delicious and exciting as they sound, and I have wowed family and friends with my wonderful creations based on the recipes in this book! Only a few, minor criticisms: some of the dishes are a bit bland (they could use a splash of wine or a few more spices); also, I have cooked in a wok before, so they recipes were not challenging to me, but to a beginner wok-cooker, there might have been just a few more tips and suggestions as to how one cooks in a wok. But otherwise, I just received another book from this series (Book of Fondues) and can not wait to start some more cooking!
