Book Description
While conducting an investigation into an attack on the Parthian Prince Phraates, one of the Parthian delegation is murdered and a full diplomatic incident threatens. The byzantine twists and turns of the case give Corvinus a headache that rivals his customary hangover, and it takes a violent threat to his wife Perilla before he gets a grip on what’s really happening.

Not a shot in the dark.......2006-02-05
Of the three Corvinus novels I've read thus far, this one is by far the more interesting in that it imagines as well as captures the time quite well.
In addition, the presumed geopolitical machinations of Romans and Parthians in the first century appear no different though far more interestingly imagined then our own present realities for sure.
Also, Wishart's wit, wisdom and colloquial speech are refreshing considering the often stilted language imagined for Romans in other novels.
The other two works, were Ovid (a nice introduction to Wishart) and White Murder (a bit long but more witty then these).
Okay, but not so hot.......2005-08-05
This book is better than anything written by Marilyn Todd, but truly, that's damning it with faint praise. The historical aspect about Parthia is fun to read, the plotting and intrigue is good, and there are some notably interesting characters- i.e. Prince Phraates, an aged but charming courtier who is jockeying to be the next Great King of the Parthian Empire. Not surprisingly, he is far more interesting than our hero, a reliable but unreflective patrician investigator named Marcus Corvinus. After finishing the book, my overwhelming feeling was- "so what?" There wasn't any character development on the part of the hero, and all the singularly pointless intriguing and backstabbing had even less impact than an episode of "CSI." Also, all the British and American slang that peppered the text was extremely irritating. I cannot count how many times I read "okay," "cathouse," "yeah," "kid," and "what the f---", as well as other beauts like, "tap-dancing" and "klatsch." I'm not asking for "thees" and "thous" and other archaic lingo in my historical fiction, but it's hard to get into the mood of a period piece when the characters sound like they're on the verge of saying, "Yo homes, dig this new iPod I got at the Apple store near the Circus Maximus!" It's just lazy writing.
In any case, I'm going to pass on reading any further books by David Wishart. If anyone has a higher tolerance level than me for postmodern vernacular in a story set 2000 years ago, then they should go right ahead and read "Parthian Shot." However, next time I'm going to stick to Steven Saylor.
Not so good.......2005-01-31
I have tried three books by this author, and I give up. the overuse of American slang is just aggrevating to read. If he had used more modern Italina slang I could cope. Poor story line, no mystery at all. I am going back to Saylor and Davis for better writing.
Twists and turns of plot mark a fast-paced mystery.......2004-06-04
David Wishart's fine Marcus Corvinus mystery is set in early Rome and provides an excellent historical mystery revolving around politics and intrigue. Marcus hates politics but becomes unwillingly involved when his latest investigation proves the attack on Parthian Price Phraates. Twists and turns of plot mark a fast-paced mystery.
Buy it.......2004-05-24
I confess that when I saw the latest Marcus Valerius Messalla Corvinus mystery from David Wishart I didn't bother reading the jacket. Just picked it up, paid for it and located the nearest bench.
Never a mistake with a Corvinus mystery and so this one proved.
Marcus' twelfth adventure finds us in 35A.D in his house struggling with his accounts. The arrival of the consular Lucius Vitellius, described as a `homing hippo' and a subsequent trip to the Palatine to meet one Isidorus means that our wise-cracking sleuth finds himself on the receiving end of an assignment from no less than the Wart himself. The brief? To discover who has attempted to murder the sixty year old Roman backed heir to Great King of Parthia, Phraates.
After pacifing the lamprey dishing Meton and the ever bookish Perilla, Marcus prompts goes to a diplomatic dinner with Vitellius, hosted by Phraates for the Parthian delegation. There we meet a list of people all of whom have motivation: Osroes, the Magian - an anti-Greek Parthian, Zariades - an unctuous Parthian courtier, Callion - a Seleucid Greek, Peucestas - a military eunuch, Tiridates - Phraates son, and Mithridates - the particularly nasty younger brother of the King of Iberia and future King of Armenia.
Promptly making an enemy of Mithridates and causing a diplomatic incident, just to protect the virtue of a dancer, lands Marcus in immediate hot water ending up with a beating in a Tuscan Way alley. Still, with the reckless abandon and grim determination that marks our sleuthing hero he sets off into the Parthian underworld of Rome. Just as well as Zariades ends up with his throat cut. A body, but not the expected one.
Conversations with Phraates, investigations into The old Batchelors and Mano's, plus an ever growing threat from Mithradates means that Marcus has to put his family on the line again.
The mystery unfolds as Marcus moves from conversation to conversation, uncovering a web of deceit from his `paymasters' that infuriates him but reveals a lot about multiple motives and secret dealings in the Roman/Parthian underworld until he finally realises that the `murder' wasn't a murder at all.
Marcus rapidly escalates his way through Nicanor, pepper merchants, Parthian and Syrian spice trading, Ostian knife gangs, the Three Graces brothel and many more as he threatens, bribes and coaxes information out of everyone to reveal a plot so complex and clever that to guess the culprits and motives from the outset would be blind luck. Oh, and he solves the mystery of the missing lampreys and manages to put one over Meton, who comes across like a Roman Ramsey at times.
David Wishart has settled down with his irreverant Corvinus mysteries and anyone who likes the overly carefree Claudia Seferius of Marilyn Todd will finds an equally affable character in Corvinus whose straight talking, justice loving sleuth cuts through Rome with an alacrity that is hard to put down.

Well Written story of a Special Forces A-team in Vietnam.......1998-03-06
Little, I believe, was actually an Army Special Forces medic in Vietnam in the early 60's. His book is beautifully satiric and features some seldom-depicted characters of Special Forces legend. Anyone wanting to get a look at how Special Forces used to be when young men still heeded JFK's call should read this. The plot features a team working with the Hao Hao religious minority in Vietnam's Delta region in the early 60's, before the massive influx of U.S. troops. The team has somehow been forgotten by Saigon when the team's higher HQ is rotated back to the states. The team decides to wait and work with the Hoa Hao until the mess is straightened out. In the meantime, the team starts a brassiere and lawn chair factory, commissions a Rand corporation study to look for ways to keep the Hoa Hao out of the fighting, and the team medic (the narrator) is ordained a water-walking saint in the Hoa Hao religion. A howl of a book.

Pro-Eritrean Propaganda.......2005-05-30
Pateman says in his intro that Eritreans almost universally like his book, and it's easy to see why. This is a highly uncritical, almost cartoonish look at the Ethiopian-Eritrean conflict, in which the Eritreans are always brave and enlightened, the Ethiopians cowardly and villainous. Eritrea is "an oasis of peace and energy... a place of hope for all fair-minded men and women." Why, it's practically the Switzerland of east Africa. It's particularly irritating that Pateman chides Western academics for uncritically supporting Ethiopia throughout the conflict, then describes Eritrea in the same propagandistic terms. Pateman is clearly too close to his subject to evaluate it objectively. For a more sophisticated and nuanced look at this topic, check out Robert Kaplan's "Surrender or Starve".
Workmanlike List Of Eritrea Knowledge.......2003-11-20
For a definitive summary of Eritrean history and social knowledge, you can't ask for much more than this magnum opus from Pateman. Eritrea's 30-year struggle for independence from Ethiopia, finally achieved in 1993, is a remarkable story which deserves much more attention from the outside world, and Pateman is just the sympathetic and personally knowledgeable expert to tell the story. While this book is a treasure trove of all sorts of useful information on all aspects of Eritrea, it is mostly written as a never-ending list with few overall insights or analysis. The early parts of the book show some unprofessional sour grapes toward other writers on the subject, and for some reason Chapter 1 devolves into a useless dissertation on Marxist theories of nationalism which is straight from disconnected professor-land. Most importantly, history has made this book's ongoing usefulness a shaky proposition. The most immense event imaginable for Eritrea - their independence - happened right after this book's first edition, making much of it outdated. This spectacular historical development should have encouraged a significant re-write, or even an entire new book, from this admitted expert authority on the country (though a lack of resources would be forgivable). Thus, Pateman's quick and sketchy epilogue on post-independence developments in this second edition does not do full justice to the remarkable story of Eritrea and its hardworking people. [~doomsdayer520~]
The definitive book on Eritrea.......1999-12-23
I came new to this subject but became rivetted by Pateman's engaged and engaging style. He writes in an easily, understandable but profound way about one of the most significant struggles for nationhood in the XX century. He covers many centuries of history but convinces me that Eritrea is indeed a special place. An enduring sense of nationhood developed during the liberation struggle a sense which has deepened during the cowardly Ethiopian attacks of the last few months. Pateman has helped me understand why the Eritreans have survived and why thay may become very important actors in Africa in the next century.

A Fascinating, Fun Collection for lovers of proverbs and Japanese Culture.......2006-02-09
What does "the ocean does not choose its trash" mean? When might you advise a friend that "beans grow even in the shade"? Have you ever observed that "the more you wear, the colder you feel?" Where might you tell yourself, "nothing if not seven habits"?
This concise collection combines 100 earthy Japanese proverbs with vivid pen and ink drawings that invites readers to speculate on the exact meaning of each poetic phrase. Each proverb also has a pronunciation guide above the proverb, and the equivalent Western expression listed in the back.
Intelligently organized and beautifully displayed, this small collection stands out in my small library of proverbs as a precious find. While some proverbs can easily be guessed giving them a more universal and perhaps practical appeal, I appreciated the number of paradoxical proverbs that made me think.
Proverb addicts, students of Japanese culture, and tourists will find "Even a Stone Buddha Can Talk" a fascinating, fun book. A wonderful gift for friends studying Japanese or planning a trip to Japan.
PS. If you want to know the answers to the questions posed in the first paragraph, I suggest that you buy the book!

not very well written. But, great content........2000-04-17
I think that this is a great book. The only problem with it might be, that its not written very well. It seems to drag at times and one might feel that its not worth the time. But, it is. This is one book which confronts you directly about who you really are and who you think you are. It reveals the actual meaning of your thoughts and the actual intentions of your actions. Its quite an eye opener into human psychology, in general, and you will see patterns of your own behaviour in his descriptions of situations. It brings you out from the illusion where you are a saint, an extremely nice person; where whatever you do is good, and where you are always thinking about others first and then about yourself. Its worth it in the end.

Great book!.......2005-04-24
This book was beautiful. Wonderful characters. This is a story of queen Marwen, who escapes a horrible kidnapping in a god-and-violence-dominated land, with the help of her best friend, an amazonian-type of girl, and minstrel, Kiri. Marwen is very young, but very wise. She must trust in her goddess, Jana, to guide her, and stand strong against her male-dominated senate to create a new Kamilan.
At last a Goddess queen can stand strong in her power without a tragic ending befalling her. Thank you Marie Jakober for not making Marwen's story TOO tragic or too predictable.
I would so love to see a sequel to this book!
A young queen must heed the call of destiny .......2004-10-30
Even The Stones is a fantastic epic, set in a land torn apart by war. A young queen must heed the call of destiny and accept the power of a goddess long since forsaken. Captured and learning to survive in a land where women are bought and sold, where her own court is rife with corruption, all her skills and sorcery will be put to the most fierce test in her attempts to bring about lasting change. A vividly fantastic and wondrous saga, featuring a strong-willed heroine.
Book Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying cut marble, travertine, and alabaster with a flat or even surface? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of cut marble, travertine, and alabaster with a flat or even surface vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of cut marble, travertine, and alabaster with a flat or even surface? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing the regional markets for imported and exported cut marble, travertine, and alabaster with a flat or even surface. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for each region, is based on a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the shares that countries are likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information for strategic planning purposes.

An Organized Approach to Dealing with Grief.......2004-07-16
Enduring the pain of losing a loved one is certainly among life's biggest trials, and there is no "quick fix" for dealing with the grief. Before you can solve a problem you must understand it, so it's helpful to have some expert assistance for such a big endeavor. This book offers a step-by-step guide through the process, answering tough questions, dispelling myths, and dispensing advice along the way. Dr. Wolfelt is a compassionate, experienced and knowledgeable voice who presents his approach to the grieving process logically and efficiently. Ten "touchstones" make up the pathway, labeled with words like dispel, embrace, recognize, and nurture. Taking an organized approach to something like grief might sound impossible, but it may well be a critical part of making it through a very difficult time.

Judy Wicks, the owner of Philadelphia's renowned White Dog Cafe, has a clear agenda. "I use food to lure innocent customers into social action," she says. Since 1973, her restaurant has been known as much for the themed evenings it hosts to raise awareness for various causes as for the food prepared by Chef Kevin Von Klause, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. As in her restaurant, promoting causes is important in this book. Stories about trips to Cuba and to Nicaragua prove that Wicks is no sunshine hippie, but rather a deeply committed entrepreneur. (The Cafe serves coffee from organically grown beans imported by a company started by a fellow traveler she invited on one of those Nicaraguan trips, and it has ongoing relationships with a number of "sister" restaurants around the world.)
The White Dog Cafe may be furnished with a funky hodgepodge of pieces added over the years as the place grew from a takeout shop to an establishment seating 200, but the recipes are carefully written and the food is broadly appealing. Chilled Roast Beef Tenderloin with Horseradish Crème Fraîche, French Mushroom Soup, and Sour Cream Coffee Cake are typical selections. They and the rest of the 200-plus dishes in this cookbook prove Wicks and Van Klause know how to serve up noncontroversial, popular food while promoting radical ideas. --Dana Jacobi

A Bistro at Its Best.......2002-06-08
Having first gotten to know The White Dog Cafe in my frequent meals there during college, I was delighted (understatement) to find that the restaurant had its own cookbook. The book, which is a solid thickness with plenty of recipe options, is one of my very favorites. There are items that are more complicated and others that are perfect for a backyard BBQ. Variety being key and inside bits of information adding to the richness of this book. For instance, in a recipe calling for fresh artichokes, the page would give you a little information on cleaning fresh artichokes. The kind of background many cooks need and most cookbooks neglect to offer. I would give this cookbook a five-star rating, but I am allergic to about 25% of its recipes so I can't say how great those are. Those I've tried, however, are yummy (never any leftovers) and popular with kids and adults alike.
One of my favorites.......2001-01-24
I own lots of cookbooks (over 200) and the White Dog Cafe cookbook is one of my favorites. I have tried about half of the book's recipes and have never been disappointed. The recipes are interesting, using ingredients that non-professionals can find easily. The techniques are easy and the food is very tasty. The food is also creative and can be made (even for the first time)without a household staff of 12! The White Dog Cafe's Black Bean Soup is the only version I really like and I have made it several times. The social philosophy of the authors is an added bonus.
A great book for your kitchen shelf--you'll use it!.......2000-06-09
I use this Cook Book all the time when I want to prepare a special meal without much effort or fuss. The White Dog Cafe Cookbook has never failed me: all of the recipes I've tried yield yummy food with a bit of a kick.
The White Dog Cafe is a progressive and socially-responsible restaurant in Philadelphia. While I've never eaten there, the next time I'm out that way I'm going to give it a try because the recipes here are so excellent.
The Soups, Salads and Light Meals, Main Courses, and Desserts sections are the ones I use most often. The Soups are fantastic. I'm a real soup lover, and am always looking for new and (more exciting) soups to try. Our favorites are the Sweet Potato and Lemon Grass Soup with Peanut Pesto (a Vietnamese-inspired dish), the Curried Aplle Bisque, and the French Mushroom Soup. The salads are equally impressive, especially the Warm Mushroom Spinach Salad which always wins great praise at dinner parties. Many of the main courses require demi-glace (kind of a pain) but the Chicken and Mushrooms in Marsala-Sage Sauce is excellent, as is the Rosemary-Mustard London Broil with Wild Mushroom Glaze. In desserts the Apple-Cranberry Deep-dish Streusel Pie has become a Thanksgiving tradition, and the Milk Chocolate Cream Pie will please all chocolate lovers, kids, and kids at heart.
I don't think you will be disappointed if you buy this book, but will turn to it again and again.
This is one of my top 10 books... a must to have........1998-04-19
Activist, cook, restaurateur, envisionist, and humanitarian are just a few words that could describe the founder and owner of Philadelphia's White Dog Café, which Conde Nast Traveler called one of fifty American restaurants worth the journey". Judy Wicks, who started the restaurant in 1983 joins with her partner/chef, Kevin Von Klause, to write the White Dog Café Cookbook published by Running Press.
I have to be honest, when I first received this book to review my mind wasn't enthusiastic. I had heard of the activism of the owners, and just thought this would be a book pushing their personal philosophies and ideas. In a way, I was right, but in many more I was way off. This book shows compassion and dedication. While I may not understand, right now, where they stand on issues, I do understand that they bring people together with food and not only locally or regionally but globally. The book is more than a cookbook or a journey through incredible lands (which I have to admit, I would love to go on one of their next trips) but it is a story and true and heartfelt book. My biggest problem with restaurateurs, chefs or TV personalities usually trying to write a book for the first time, is that they are put together without much thought or planning, they are publicity gimmicks by the publishers or agents and that the people aren't ready to put a book together. White Dog Café Cookbook has become one of the few exceptions.
For those of you that have followed my reviews, you will know that one of my pet peeves about cookbook writers, are the ones (or their editors or publishers) that do not lay their books out properly, and too many times have their readers turning the pages to finish recipes. This book has kept almost every one of them on one page. Each recipe also included a brief introduction. Many of the recipes offered "other ways to do it". And the few that offered hard to find ingredients gave you option for substitution. My only complaint on this book really was that many of the personal photographs throughout the book were a little to dark and the recipe names were long.
The recipes included Oysters Stewed in Thyme Cream with Thyme Croutons, Sherried Lobster and Shrimp Crepes, Basil-Dressed melon and Prosciutto with Black Pepper-Orange Mascarpone, Ratatouille Bisque, Desert Garden Gazpacho with Margarita-Scallop Seviche, Creamy Mussel Chowder with Sorrel, Spinach and Fennel Salad with Curried Pears and Gorgonzola, Toasted Brioche with Ham and Brie, Moroccan-Spiced Lamb Burger with Pepper Relish, Smoked Chicken in Rosemary Cream with Bow-Tie Pasta, Spicy Chevre-stuffed Chicken Breasts with Roasted Corn Salsa, Chilled Roast Beef Tenderloin with Horseradish Crème Fraiche, Center-Cut Pork Chops with Gorgonzola-Walnut Stuffing and Ruby Port Glaze, Caribbean Grilled Mahi Mahi with Tropical Fruit Salad, Tomato and Sweet Corn Risotto, White Cheddar and Red-skinned Potato Gratin, Roasted Vegetables Balsamico, Roasted Red Pepper and Shrimp Grits, Brioche French Toast with Apricot-Grand Marnier Sauce, Apple-Cranberry Deep-Dish Streusel Pie, White Chocolate-Raspberry Cheesecake, and Gingered Pear Chutney name just a few.
The book also tells stories, trips to Vietnam, Prison Gardens, Cuba and other locations in search of creating `sister' restaurants and spreading the social and activist word to better all of us. It is an interesting book with 250 recipes that will tempt your palate as well as satisfy your appetite, and will also open your eyes to new and wonderful tales and experience. I definitely recommend this book for your shelf.

First cookbook I turn to when I want something new!.......2002-05-11
For variety and interesting dishes, this is one of the best cookbooks I've ever seen. The flavor mixtures are creative, the recipes simple and the ingredients are common enough that they are usually in my frig or cupboard. My husband (a bit of a gourmand) and my 6 year old daughter have loved everything that I've made from the book. I bought a used copy for $10, which turned out to be autographed by the two authors. My only wish is that 1) it was printed in a spiral-bound version, and 2) the authors produce a second book soon.
This cook book has great recipes and is a great read........1999-05-20
I love this cook book. I love reading it. I love cooking from it. If you are looking for something different to read or to cook, this is the book for you. The Black Bean soup is the best I have found. The layered meat loaf is wonderful. The authors' commitment to good food and good community is inspiring, and reminds me of the role food - its preparation and its consumption - can play in making the world a better place.
very sloppily edited.......1998-11-08
Mistakes galore-i.e. in one recipe 5 ounces of sliced wild mushrooms makes 2 cups and in another 1/4 pounds(sic) makes 8 cups. The recipe for veal glace is given as page 000, indicates that the vein can be pulled from a cooked shrimp and so it goes.
An outstanding assortment of recipes. Good for any occasion.......1998-10-20
The book allows a person to prepare a special meal for two or a formal dinner for twelve. It can accomodate both kids and adults alike. Also, with its multi-cultural recipes you can enjoy different meals and never get bored with the food you are preparing. In addition to good food and easy to follow directions, you get a story behind some of the influences that have shaped the both the restaurant and the cook book. I would highly recommend this cook book to anyone. It would make a fine addition to anyone's cooking reference collection.
