Book Description
"Perry has the great gift of making it all seem immediate and very much alive."
THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER
In the posh London street of Paragon Walk, a young woman is brutally raped and murdered. Once again the incomparable team of sleuths, Inspector Thomas Pitt and his young wife, Charlotte, peer beneath the elegant masks of the well-born suspects and reveal that something ugly lurks behind the handsome facades of Paragon Walk--something that could lead to more scandal, and more murder....
Customer Reviews:
I'm glad to be back to a 5 star review for this series........2007-01-01
This is the third book in the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt novels by Anne Perry and I am very glad to be able to give an enthusiastic five stars as my opinion of this offering.
As a fan of these Victorian era mysteries I had wondered how Ms Perry was going to proceed with the investigative directions of Charlotte and Thomas. Now, after reading three, I feel that I have a better handle on which role will be played by each character and were they fit into the overall scheme of the books. The actual plot of the book has been very well described in other reviews. I enjoyed this title because it gave almost equal roles to Thomas, Charlotte and Emily. The residents of Paragon Walk were so fully developed and wonderfully rounded out that I began to think of them as real people. Perhaps there was a degree of closeness there which began to feel slightly artificial but it was a necessary part of the whole in order to make the ending believable. Neighbors in an upper class London street would probably not have been quite so much in each others pockets, but these were and the conclusion showed why that was so. I was able to see through two episodes which took place but never dreamed of the reason behind what the central dark portion of this case was all about.
I found this an absorbing read. It held my interest and kept me wanting to find out what was going on and what was going to happen next. A distraction for me was Charlotte's sudden ability and desire to leave her child in the care of someone while she made many, many, many trips away from home to investigate the case with Emily. Did Pitt not have anything to say about her sudden abandonment of her home and child to investigate? (Now see, I wanted her to be more involved in book two and was slightly dissatisfied when she was not. Now that she is more involved in book three, I'm questioning if this would have been allowed by her husband. How is an author ever supposed to satisfy us all?) Another point, suddenly Aunt Vespasia (don't you just love that name? pure Victorian!) and Emily were manufacturing clothes right and left so that Charlotte could attend funerals and other functions with them. Did Pitt not mind? Did Charlotte not feel some sense of abandoning her decision to give up all that when she married "below her station" because she loved Pitt? I can't have it both ways but there was so much emphasis on clothes this time that it became an irritant to me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the fourth in the series, Resurrection Row. It looks as if the characters will take turns being front and center in the solving of the mysteries. This one was rushed quite a bit at the end and could have done with a lot more explanation of what happened after the solving of the case. Still liked it, though!
A Mannerly Mystery.......2005-09-13
Mysteries that involve historical periods can easily be swallowed up by their period dress, distance from our current lives and uncommon mores. In this third novel in the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series, Anne Perry seems to find her footing more effectively in Victorian England than in either of the two previous books, The Cater Street Hangman and Callander Square, and surpasses the usual costume mystery.
A 17-year-old woman is raped and murdered . . . dying in the arms of her sister-in-law. Thomas Pitt is assigned to investigate. Matters are complicated by the victim having just returned from visiting Pitts' sister-in-law's house . . . making his brother-in-law a possible suspect.
As in Callander Square, the investigation soon begins to take its toll on the haughty heads of the houses on Paragon Walk.
Once again, Charlotte is able to work on the investigation by insinuating herself into the social lives of the walk's residents through her sister's introductions.
The solution of the mystery is a fair one, built up logically from all of the clues.
The story itself moves along fairly nicely, and the book can be read in one pleasant sitting if you are in a hurry. Or you can spread it out if you prefer.
The book still lacks enough action, and the pace of the plot and character developments will strike most people as slow. As a result, this book will be best liked by those who are drawn to the verbal warfare that's often found in Victorian drawing room novels.
A bit of a letdown.......2005-07-12
In "Paragon Walk," Anne Perry once again delivered a penetrating look at Victorian society along with witty, sharp-edged dialogue. But I felt deflated after finishing it. The solution to the mystery included some silly, far-fetched elements, and it did not answer my nagging questions the way I hoped it would.
In its favor, the book had many intriguing characters. I am glad to learn Aunt Vespasia returns in future novels. As for the nastier residents of the Walk, their cutting remarks and veiled references to unsavory subjects made me want to see them stripped bare and to learn all their secrets. Once again, the ending let me down.
I was also disappointed Inspector Pitt did not do much sleuthing this time around. He spent too much time asking the same questions of himself and sending another officer off to question servants. Also, the novel had too many scenes at society parties, where people displayed their dislike of one another. I almost wanted to scream, "Enough! I get it that so-and-so hates this other person. Give it a rest, already!"
Overall, I enjoyed reading "Paragon Walk," but as I worked through the last 30 pages, I didn't know whether to laugh or to fling the book across the room. I hope next time, Pitt gets to do more detecting and that my curiosity about various characters is better satisfied.
Wny is food served after a funeral?.......2005-04-24
This was not her best book, atleast compared to the first two I read. It was just too watered down with society talk. If you've read the first two you don't need any more lessons on people of society vs. the working class.
HOWEVER, I did discover the reasoning of why food is served after a funeral, or atleast it made the most sense of anything I've heard so far and just for that reason the book was worth reading. I'm looking forward to her 4th book in this series, I've become quite attached to these characters.
not her best.......2004-11-08
I agree with the other reviewers who were disappointed. I too will continue to read the rest of the series, because I really enjoyed Cater Street Hangman, the first in this series. I found that this was just hot as interesting as the first two books in this series. Neither was it as good as the one Monk book that I have read, which introduced me to Anne Perry's writing and made me want to read more.

Customer Reviews:
Dont bother getting this.......2007-07-04
For one, the company is almost bankrupt and out of business. Two, its a terrible game. If you want to play a great heroes game get Mutants and Masterminds.
I bought this and returned it. Save you money for quality material.
Stalwart.......2006-09-14
What Heroes Unlimited lacks in diversity and customization (point buy systems have this staple pretty much cornered) it makes up for in overall playability and dozens of raodblocks to game abuse. Don't misunderstand, any game can be min/maxed, but the Palladiums strict class system makes it much more difficult that games with more freedom.
This is a great game to introduce players to (I, myself, started with Ninjas & Superspies back in the late 80s). It is great as a standalone book (in fact, the sourcebooks are mostly fluff, the game just doesn't need anything else).
Heroes Unlimited revised second edition.......2002-05-10
The original Heroes Unlimited was published by Palladium books way back in 1984 amidst a wide selection of Super Hero genre RPGs.. 2002 and this game is in it's third incarnation while others of it's type have faded into the past. The game is cohesive and features Palladium's universal rule system, the first of it's kind back in the 80's (yes, even before GURPS), so it is compatable with every other game in the Palladium Megaverse. Aside from covering every main type of super hero, anti hero or villian, from aliens to super sleuths; Heroes Unlimited provides a loose framework for creating the entire campaign environment, including quick roll tables for Non player characters and words of advice in how potential game masters can breathe life into thier creations.
Why buy this book?
Two words : It works!
You are buying a reliable product that is supported by Palladium Books ... with an active message board, numerous fan sites and frequent releases of supplimentary titles (such as Villians unlimited, Aliens unlimited, Heroes unlimited G.M.'s Guide and more planned this year).. HU2 is here to stay.
Flawed masterpiece..........2000-08-23
Palladium's contribution to the 'superhero boom' that hit the RPG industry a while ago, and one of the most durable. If you know the Palladium system, you'll find this a doddle to use, and the combat system has been expanded considerably (rules for vehicle and arial combat). The 'power category' system works well (mutants, aliens, cyborgs, psychics etc) and the skill selection system is realistic for a present-day setting. With a little imagination, the rules give the ability for almost any kind of superhero to be (re)created.
Bad points. Firstly, some sections are badly worded. For example, the Robotics section is extremely confusing and the cybernetics listing contradicts itself, giving different listings for the same item. Also, despite a 'Mega-Hero' option, there are few facilities to create powerhouses on the level of Superman or the Incredible Hulk. I can see how something like that would have been open to abuse, but the option would have been nice. And the magic listing is somewhat truncated, though this is rectified in a later sourcebook.
Aside from those gripes, I recommend it. It may be intimidating for those new to roleplaying or the Palladium system, but few games have the sheer possibility on offer here.
Heroes Unlimited II.......2000-02-10
Great both for a stand alone Supers Game, and wonderful as an addition for most other Palladium games. DM's running RIFTS will find it useful when your players are running rampant over the Techno based and Magic based NPC's. Adds spice to your Horror based games. No more seeing the players stake and cross your vampires when they have INVULNERABILITY.
Book Description
In this illuminating and groundbreaking new book, food psychologist Brian Wansink shows why you may not realize how much you’re eating, what you’re eating–or why you’re even eating at all.
• Does food with a brand name really taste better?
• Do you hate brussels sprouts because your mother did?
• Does the size of your plate determine how hungry you feel?
• How much would you eat if your soup bowl secretly refilled itself?
• What does your favorite comfort food really say about you?
• Why do you overeat so much at healthy restaurants?
Brian Wansink is a Stanford Ph.D. and the director of the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab. He’s spent a lifetime studying what we don’t notice: the hidden cues that determine how much and why people eat. Using ingenious, fun, and sometimes downright fiendishly clever experiments like the “bottomless soup bowl,” Wansink takes us on a fascinating tour of the secret dynamics behind our dietary habits. How does packaging influence how much we eat? Which movies make us eat faster? How does music or the color of the room influence how much we eat? How can we recognize the “hidden persuaders” used by restaurants and supermarkets to get us to mindlessly eat? What are the real reasons most diets are doomed to fail? And how can we use the “mindless margin” to lose–instead of gain–ten to twenty pounds in the coming year?
Mindless Eating will change the way you look at food, and it will give you the facts you need to easily make smarter, healthier, more mindful and enjoyable choices at the dinner table, in the supermarket, in restaurants, at the office–even at a vending machine–wherever you decide to satisfy your appetite.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating! .......2007-07-31
This book is incredibly fascinating. You never realize how much of an influence your environment and surroundings play on your eating habits until you read this book. It is fast, interesting, and reads like a good novel, not a boring scientific book. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interesting in learning about eating habits and food studies and anyone who needs a little more help in losing weight. It definitely makes you aware of some things you never realized you were doing, such as eating unconsciously just because the food was there (or free). Really fascinating.
Great Book.......2007-06-27
This book will really open your eyes to why, when, where, and how we eat the way we do! NOW, I try real hard to recognize certain things in my surroundings before I stick something in my mouth!
This book will also make you feel really stupid, when you read how gullible we are with advertising!
I reccomend this book to everyone, whether you are trying to diet or not. Read it!
The Last Diet Book You'll Need.......2007-06-17
If every overweight person read and followed the instructions in this book, they'd never have to diet again. And that is exactly Wansink's point -- that eating to lose weight doesn't have to be about self-punishment and self-flagellation. Instead, through a series of well-researched and -documented scientific experiments, Wanskink shows readers who to fool themselves into losing weight.
I really enjoyed the social science part of the book -- reading about how Wansink and other researchers structured the experiments to measure the causality of certain behaviors. But just as thrwoing all the jellybeans into one container makes you think there's more than there is, I felt a bit overwhelmed by the tons of research and new ideas. i ended the book not knowing exactly what I could do, RIGHT NOW, to make a difference in my life. I think a short tip sheet with all the appropriate information on it would be much appreciated.
In the meantime, read Wansink's book. Something's sure to take root and change your behavior and attitudes toward food.
Great Diet Book.......2007-05-30
This book gives practical stratgeies for weight reduction in a very humorour way. It is awesome for anyone interested in weight loss. It is awesome for anyone who wants a laugh!!
Excellent general reference and consumer guide.......2007-05-24
In this book Marion Nestle combines her usual wit, insight and healthy scepticism with her awesome familiarity with nutrition, food marketing and food production to produce a readable, interesting and useful general reference to USA food, which doubles as a handy consumer guide for people wanting to make the best choices when shopping for their food.
Recommended for anyone interested in how USA food is made, how it is sold, why people get sick from food, which foods they should eat and which types/brands/labels of those foods they should seek out or avoid.
Given the trans-national scope of the world's food industry, this book is also interesting and useful to people from other parts of the world (I've never been to the USA).

Customer Reviews:
a few small problems and one very BIG problem; otherwise..........2007-07-26
i'm studying to be a naturopathic doctor and this was a required text.
i was already vegan when i read this book and i was considering moving to a raw-food diet. this book did further convince me of that choice, and my family is transitioning now.
however, i did have a few problems with the book. they are certainly easy enough to gloss over in favor of the solid knowledge that it does in fact contain, but they were there nonetheless.
first of all, there was one GLARING error in his discussion of breastfeeding toward the end of the book. he says that the two circumstances under which a woman should not breastfeed are in the case of certain medically-necessary medications, and if the baby is jaundiced. sadly, cousens is extremely misinformed about jaundice and gives very bad, completely false information in this case. i was a student midwife for three years and i am a certified lactation educator now. if a baby has jaundice two things are most important to help it pass: to expose the baby to natural light and to NURSE NURSE NURSE. fluid will help the bilirubin pass faster and if a baby is given water or formula instead, it can cause health problems and interfere with breastfeeding. one potential problem resulting from jaundice is lethargy. if jaundice isn't caught early and breastfeeding isn't established well, then serious problems can occur because the baby is not awake enough to take in the necessary fluid to help the bilirubin pass. as a result, jaundice may persist and bilirubin levels may raise to dangerous levels. this is why it is of paramount importance that breastfeeding is established early and babies are breastfed exclusively, on-demand from birth. breastmilk is absolutely the best healer for jaundice; if breastfeeding is not established and the baby is deprived of the breast, jaundice is much more likely to occur and to persist to a critical level. while every breastfeeding expert and supportive organization in the world says that breastfeeding is the best thing you can do to prevent and correct jaundice, cousens claims that breastmilk contains "substances" that supposedly prevent bilirubin from passing. but he doesn't say what these substances are, and he gives no references, and i have not been able to find a single piece of scientific literature supporting his assertion. universally, the fact stated by experts is that except in the case of a few extremely rare metabolic diseases, breastfeeding can and should continue when a baby is jaundiced. please overlook cousens' inaccuracy and look to your midwife, lactation consultant, LLL leader, or BREASTFEEDING-FRIENDLY doctor for more accurate information if your baby is jaundiced.
with that long diatribe aside... :)
i found some of his spiritual commentary off-putting. as a casual pagan who is vegan in part due to spiritual reasons, i am certainly open to considerations of spirituality in diet, and i consider myself very tolerant of religious beliefs. but in this case i found most of his comments irrelevent and even somewhat nonsensical. again, this is easy enough to overlook, but it might be a serious bother to some people. the sections on jesus, the apostles, and the bible, while interesting, were especially confusing in context.
this book is dense with intense information. it is really a scholarly work and was quite difficult for me to get through in a timely manner with a toddler and a newborn. but i did come away with a ton of really excellent insight and understanding. some parts i discarded, but other parts i found surprisingly enlightening. i went in very skeptical about the ayurvedic diet system that he describes, but i was amazed at how specifically true, and positive, it ended up being when i adjusted my eating habits to fit his recommendations for my "dosha."
i didn't feel that the book was laid out very well. i felt that many chapters were stuck in at random. and i found a lot of his commentary saccharine and condescending - such as looking at food as "love messages from god." gag.
he also plugs his own health resort regularly, which is a great option for the rich who have money to burn on such luxuries.
i was also thoroughly disappointed that he didn't have any advice whatsoever for applying a live/raw-food diet to babies or children.
i did find the book basically informative and enlightening and i found most of his principles easy to apply, despite the aforementioned problems.

The Bible of Raw Foodism.......2006-12-14
If you have read some more concise raw food books then you are ready for this one. This work is intensely in depth from the simple reasons of eating raw all the way to the meticulously detailed biological and spiritual reasons as well. No fact on the subject has been left out. You will get your money's worth with this one and feel like you graduated from Raw Foodist's University when you're finished! A true, honest work by the AMAZINGLY intelligent Dr.Cousens!
Good Book.......2006-11-27
I've come across a few good books that relate to diet and this one has a bit of all of them. Very well put with some opinionism in it. Many of the principles in this book come from other books I've run across and some look new. Worth the money in my opinion.
It is good to see that the author explains simply the need for PH balance in our bodies. Some of the lists of food pH look familiar to the ones I've found in "Correlative Urinalysis" by MT Morter (C)1987. and "Your Health Your Choice" (C)1992. In these books it tells you "why" animal protein is not good for you and "why" we need to eat vegetable protein to balance sodium levels in our blood to maintain a 7.4 pH with proper diet and also the consequences for not.
Dr. Morters analysis of the need for a PH balanced diet to stave of major disease's 20 years from the time you decide to eat right, and to keep your blood PH balanced with your diet for more energy now .. ATP steps well with this book Gabriel Cousins "Conscious Eating" (C)2000.
"Eat right for your blood type" is another good book that I've read and has some pretty good points as to your blood type being all essential to what you should eat. Blood type can be traced back several generations to the vegetations that your ancestors ate in BF Egypt while passing their blood type on to you. Very good also.
Conscious Eating is a sensible book with a lot of good explanations. In my library it goes well with the above books.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The bottom line is all of these books promote vegetarian diets for the most part. I for one HATE cooked veggies. But have found that juicing them is palatable to me. Lots of good info on the net for these.
The authors choice of a great juicer, The champion is a bit outdated.
If your looking for a juicer check out the Omega line or something similar with "slow moving parts" that crush or "masticate" the vegetables, AND ARE EASY TO CLEAN! I use mine every morning and it's a snap to clean and the juice comes out with very little froth. Maybe champion has a better one now, my research is early 2006. If your a millionaire and can afford a Norwalk press, get one. I don't sell these.
Book Review of Conscious Eating.......2006-07-26
This book was delivered in a timely manner with two other books I had ordered, arriving sooner than I expected. Because I have only glanced at the book I cannot provide a knowledgeable book review; however, my cursory review suggests that the book contains much about improving health by observing conscious eating, which is mentioned in Cousens next book, Rainbow Green, Raw Food Cuisine. I am interested in pursuing the recipes also included in the text.

Unadulterated Garbage: Stay Away!.......2006-02-02
I am a medical professional. A patient showed me this book, and I was appaled. Never before have I read such a dangerous piece of pseudo-psychology babble.
This book is criminal in its misinformation. Anyone who follows it is putting their life at serious risk of liver damage and permanent disfigurement.
I did some research about the first author. It turns out she doesn't follow her own advice: She weighs well over 350 pounds!
No one in their right mind would buy this book. Don't take my word for it, just ask your doctor.

Hilda Villaverde has a winner here. This book is perfect for anyone who has ever tried to make a commitment to eat a more healthy diet. It's short, it's simple, and it's to the point. Even the act of eating - and maybe more importantly the act of eating, which we tend to do on the run and without thought these days - can be "a sacred time of honoring ourselves." I've shared it with friends and they have each come back wanting to know where to get more copies to share with their friends. Regardless of your religion, outlook, or relationship with food, you will find her concept of Conscious Eating inspiring and helpful on a day-to-day basis.
The Power Is In Your Hands........2001-12-16
Hilda Villaverde, expresses herself with a freedom and honesty that makes the reader feel loved. Her passion and enthusiasm for her truth glows from the pages. I was drawn to the beauty and simplicity of the cover at first sight. When I began reading and absorbing the intention of "Conscious Eating", I felt I had been given a gift. A gift of power. Power through prayer, through consciousness and self-respect. Hilda reminds us that, "Eating is a sacred time of honoring ourselves and the Source of all nourishment.". In a world that runs from task to task and diet to diet this book encourages us to slow down, become fully present, enjoy, savor, smell, touch and let the moment last. There are prayers and affirmations for everyone. Before a meal or just when I need a boost I randomly open to a page and find it is the truth I need to hear and practice. For a book that is small in size its value cannot be measured. It brings me focus, pleasure and peace everytime I read from it. "Conscious Eating" is a treasure to give anyone you love, including yourself. My thanks to Hilda for gathering her love and respect for life and sharing it with all of us!
A Delicious Book!.......2001-12-15
This book just exudes love in its every fiber! Villaverde has taken the heartfelt words of her peers, friends, and colleagues, intertwined them with her own, and has created a beautiful way to turn the everyday practice of eating into a sacred activity.
Conscious Eating will leave the reader feeling blessed and will open their eyes to a whole new way of looking at their food and the act of eating. Living to eat?...or eating to LIVE?, that is the question that was answered for me. This book is a perfect gift for all ages, creeds, religions and beliefs. It has something for everyone!

great review.......2007-01-04
I received the book in good time and in good shape as stated.
My Favorite Cookbook!.......2006-08-08
I mainly bake for my family, as my husband enjoys cooking our meals. This cookbook is my favorite. The Supreme Chocolate Cake with Fluffy Fudge Frosting is a must at each birthday throughout the year. Also, the Cold Blueberry Pie (Openfaced Blueberry Pie in the third edition of the book) is fantastic. My friends request that I make that for all our get-togethers. The Gingerbread recipe is another favorite. I could go on and on....I recieved this book as a gift about 15 years ago and it shows. It was falling apart. Thankfully, Mary published another edition. My daughter now has editions 2 and 3 in her collection of cookbooks. I know that she too will be using these cookbooks long into the future.
Adequate, I guess.......2006-07-21
I really liked "Dining on a Dime" a lot better. Not much new info, and a lot of info I just didn't need. The recipes didn't look that great, and there weren't that many tips. Nice cover, though.
Contains the same info AND some updates! Yay! .......2006-02-22
The fact that this book is in its THIRD edition is a very, very good thing, proving that it was popular enough to merit a third edition. I have a copy that is wearing out so it was time for a new one.
Happily, the new edition contains some updates which make it easer for today's families to stay within a food budget. The author has remained flexible and open-minded enough to accommodate the busy lives of many families today and to acknowledge that not everyone can spend hours in the kitchen making meals. There are still plenty of homecooked meals that DO take some time and planning ahead but there are others that don't take nearly as long.
I'd strongly recommend you use the "Search Inside the Book" function here at Amazon to get an idea of the contents of this book...and then buy a copy. It'll be worth it!
The Frugal Family's Kitchen Book, Third Edition.......2003-11-22
The Frugal Family's Kitchen Book is better than ever - updated and expanded. Mary Webber's humor and practical wisdom explores food philosophy, menu planning to save time and money and the often missed opportunities offered in 'breaking bread' with family and friends.
