Blunderer McGee.......2007-05-02

I'm a huge fan of the Travis McGee series, but I urge you to be careful with this one. For the first 250 pages, McGee makes solid choices and dodges all the bullets. However, he makes a fatal blunder at the end that any reader could see coming a mile away. I was powerless to stop it, solely at the mercy of MacDonald's writing. McGee's blunder gets the main girl hurt really bad. I suffered from borderline post-traumatic stress for the rest of the evening after finishing this book. Be careful, and know what you're getting into before investing time in this book.

Hated this one.......2006-11-18

I have liked the other McGee books, but this one was sickening. The novel suffers from the ponderous exposition, as other reviewers noted. And the ending--without spoilers, I can say that it was so over-the-top violent and deliberately disturbing that I wonder about the author's mental health. And the solution came on what was a clumbsily-written deus ex machina. Get another McGee book--any other McGee book--but not this one. This is one of the few books I've wished I could un-read.

Not Up To Par For JDM.......2006-11-12

This entry of the T. McGee series was not up to plot or craftsmanship found in most of John D. MacDonald's work. To me, it seemed at times to be almost a parody of the usual McGee...too much TALK of broken birds, and just not enough of the rough and tumble action we have come to expect from Ol' Trav. But don't worry, things are back on track in the next one, PALE GRAY FOR GUILT. I've wondered if there wasn't something going on in JDM's personal life to make this entry seem so lacking?

MacDonald does it again..........2004-10-25

Travis McGee, sometimes modern Robin Hood and most-times beach bum, can't resist a pretty face or an old friend. So when an old flame calls and needs some help, McGee quickly leaves balmy Ft. Lauderdale for the colder climes of Chicago in John D. MacDonald's One Fearful Yellow Eye.

Glory Geis is the widow of renowned neurosurgeon, Fortner Geis. When Geis dies after a long illness, Glory discovers that his $600,000 inheritance (much bigger money in the 1960's) has gone missing. It turns out that Dr. Geis liquidated all his assets over the course of the last year of his life. Glory is left without very much money and her stepchildren accuse her of foul play. So Glory begs McGee to find out what happened to the inheritance. Of course, Travis discovers that the good doctor has more than a few skeletons in his closet, and there are a number of suspects.

The plot in this 8th book is a little thin, and I figured out fairly early who the blackmailer was. But I still gave One Fearful Yellow Eye four stars as the writing is sharp and crisp and as good as any previous McGee. Two favorites include:

"Take her home. Boat her, beach her, bake her, brown her, and bunk her. You too are a sucker for busted birds, starving kittens, broody broads."
or
"There was no color in the world. Gray sand, gray water, gray beach, gray sky. I was trapped in one of those arty salon photographs of nature in the raw, the kind retired colonels enter in photography contests."

In terms of philosophizing, this book is MacDonald at his best. Also, while I tend to like McGee better in his native Florida, Chicago is rather a good setting for him.

This is my 8th Travis McGee and I'm a long way from being tired of him. I'm anxious to start number nine-Pale Gray for Guilt.

Travis: No Fear.......2004-07-13

Even though I still find "Flash of Green" to be my favorite MacDonald book, there's something so appealing about the Travis McGee series that keeps me coming back to them. And "One Fearful Yellow Eye" has such a quick pace, that you cannot put this mystery down. And Travis, well, he's just Travis--you gotta love this guy! I just hope that MacDonald continues to gain in popularity, as I feel he is horribly overlooked.

Excellent Book, easy to read and very informative.......2007-09-26

My sister, who is an Holistic Counselor, suggested that me and my Fiance read this book to help with his digestive problems that severely impact his life. I'm totally impressed with the information presented in this book; not only does the author discuss remedies to common, yet severe, digestive issues, but she takes the time to describe the digestive system in a way that anyone can understand. The initial description of the digestive system and the way that our bodies convert the items we ingest is, to me, the key to fully understanding the remedies she presents. I believe that the contents in this book are so valuable that I wonder why some of it is not included in high school curricula.

With the marvels of technology (Amazon digital books), I was able to read this excellent, informative book over the weekend, apply what I learned, and reap some of the benefits immediately before the weekend was over--even BEFORE the hard-copy arrives tomorrow through my two-day Amazon Prime membership! I wish ALL books were instantly available to us digitally while we wait for the hard copy (I like having both!)

The information in this book is an effective reminder of what I already knew but sometimes forgot the importance of doing; other things were brand new to me. It's a quick and easy read, and the author tells us precisely what the recommendations are, in what amounts, when, and why. See my review of The Maker's Diet about my husband's cholesterol, dropped 99 points in 8 weeks with The Maker's Diet and the principles from The Great Physician. Use the shopping guide to assist in grocery buying the first few weeks. If you want to get healthy, read his books!

My son has Crohns disease and has been to 4 different Doctors and has taken countless harsh drugs ,all to no avail . We were recommended to the makers diet book and since tried it, I am hear to tell you its amazing the difference it has made in my sons life. Jordon Rubin has given my sons life back to him.

Anyone looking to have a better quality of life should pick up this book without hesitation. The book is full of common sense and not so common sense advice on how to improve your health in a variety of ways.

We've already added a water filter to our shower head and could tell a difference on the first use: chlorine is BAD for you and your skin.

This books has radically changed my life. After reading this book it made me realize throughout my entire life I have been taught to eat all the wrong foods. This book will take you back to the way we are supposed to take care of our bodies and not allow cancer and disease take over our bodies.

Not only do I look and feel better, but my husband and I have lost a total of 35 pounds within the last 4 months! I was never overweight, but I didn't know I had weight that was unnecessary.

I not only reccommend this bood to everyone I know, but I highly reccommend this book to everyone I don't know. This WILL change your life!

I met the author at a Chatham Woman's Club meeting where many of the recipes were served. The book is very good, the recipes are ones that are easy to make and delicious. I highly recommend this book.

Sleep On It is now my most used and appreciated cookbook. I have been entertaing family and friends using the easy and very tasty recipes from SOI and I have received rave reviews from all my guests. Not one of the recipes has failed me and I have tried quite a few. The instructions are clear and easy to follow...and since most of the recipes can be asembled the night before, I have more time in the moring to get ready for guests.

It is a great little book and I have given away many copies as gifts. EBK

Easy entertaining.......2007-03-08

If you're a night owl like me and hate early morning cooking, Sleep on It is a godsend. Preparing ingredients the night before suits me fine. Although this cookbook is long on breakfast and brunch items, they can be used at other times just as easily. I especially like the blueberry crumb cake to snack on any time of the day or night. Kudos to Ms. Gordon for pulling together such tasty recipes with such a creative title!

How clever!.......2006-12-14

I love the concept of this book and I just got it, so I haven't tried many recipes, but it's so cute with little drawings throughout the book and I really like the overnight idea! I think another reviewer criticized the book because it has a lot of breakfasts in it, but... maybe that's the point- usually people have time in the evening before dinner, but no time in the morning. I'll proabbly have some of the breakfasts for dinner anyway with my diet. I can't wait to try the breakfast sausage casserole and the bran muffins!

Quick, Easy, and Delicious!.......2006-12-08

I have shared this cookbook with my neighborhood friends, family, and book group. Everyone who has tried the recipes has been thrilled. The recipes are easy to prepare and please even picky eaters. The cheese balls are great for holiday parties, as are the brunch recipes like the "Southwest Strata." One of my all time favorites is the "Best Brisket Ever." The book makes a great teacher or new parent gift.
