Book Description
It takes a cat to write the purr-fect mystery--.
"People who love cats...have a friend in Rita Mae Brown," declares
The New York Times Book Review. And nowhere is it more obvious than in this, her sixth deliciously witty foray into detective fiction written with the paws-on help of collaborator Sneaky Pie Brown, and starring that irrepressible crime-solving tiger cat, Mrs. Murphy.
As the principal of St. Elizabeth's, an exclusive private school that caters to Crozet, Virginia's, best families, Roscoe Fletcher has proven himself to be a highly effective and vastly popular administrator. So when his obituary appears in the local paper, everyone in town is upset. Yet nothing compares to the shock they feel when they discover that Roscoe Fletcher isn't dead at all. Someone has stooped to putting a phony obituary in the newspaper. But is it a sick joke or a sinister warning?
Only Mrs. Murphy, the canny tiger cat, senses the pure malice behind the act. And when a second false obit appears, this time of a Hollywood has-been who is Roscoe Fletcher's best friend, Mrs. Murphy invites her friends, the corgi Tee Tucker, and fat cat Pewter, to do a bit of sleuthing. It's obvious to this shrewd puss that two phony death notices add up to deadly trouble. And her theory is borne out when one of the men is fiendishly murdered.
"Harry" Haristeen, in her position as Crozet's postmistress, is the first to hear all the theories on whodunit--starting with the man's jealous wife. Then a second bloody homicide follows, and a third. People are dropping like flies in Crozet and no one seems to know why.
Fearlessly exploring all the places where humans never think to go, Mrs. Murphy manages to untangle the knots of passion, duplicity, and greed that have sent someone into a killing frenzy. Yet knowing the truth isn't enough. Mrs. Murphy must somehow lead Harry, her favorite human, down a trail that is perilous...to a killer who is deadly...and a climax that mystery lovers will relish.

Murder by Obituary!.......2006-06-10
In the 6th book in the Mrs. Murphy and Tucker Mystery series, the little town of Crozet, Virginia is shaken by the appearance of an obituary in the local paper. On its own, it wouldn't be shocking, as people unfortunately pass on each day. However, this obituary is of the headmaster at St. Elizabeth's prep school, and everyone is shocked by his sudden "death". Thankfully, the obit turns out to be false and is found to be a school age prank, and the town quickly returns to normal. That is...until one more false obituary of another prominent citizen appears, and the boy who placed the first bogus obituary swears he had nothing to do with this one. Then, one of the men is murdered, shaking the small town and its citizens. Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry) is the postmistress of the town, and has solved a few cases in the past with the help of her irrepressible feline companion, Mrs. Murphy, a tiger cat, and her canine companion, Tee Tucker, a Welsh corgi. Adding to that mix is Pewter, a large grey cat who is spending more time away from her former home at the market, to enjoy time with Murphy and Tucker. The four friends jump in to solve a murder, and find themselves fighting for their lives against a killer out for blood.
This is a great series! The animals talk to one another, and feel that they are superior to humans because we do not speak "cat" or "dog". For some readers, it does take a little bit of time to get used to the communication between the animals, but it is well worth it. I love the way that the residents of the town interact with one another, and this is as much of a draw to the books as is the mystery. I am often guessing until the end as to how the mystery will be resolved, and I am also curious to see how the animals will help in solving the case. This series makes me wish I could pack up and visit Crozet on my next vacation.
The first book in the series is called "Wish You Were Here". Enjoy!
My little Secret.......2006-05-19
Reading these mysteries over the years, I've always guessed the wrong killer. Therefore, I had a diferrent slant on RMB/Sneaky Pie books than I would have had I guessed correctly. Soooo, after reading the first few chapters, I HAVE TO SEE who-dun-it.
Believe it or not, I really enjoy this method and it's a lot more fun reading the books.
Another quick read.......2006-02-06
Reading the Mrs. Murphy mysteries out of order is not too bad as long as the reader knows she is doing that. The underlying stories of the lead characters, including Harry, Fair, Susan, Miranda, Mim, BoomBoom, etc., does run through the books, but the individual mysteries stand alone, since it's usually the . . . Well, mustn't give too much away.
This mystery starts when false obituaries are printed in a local newspaper. The two subjects are members of St. Elizabeth's a private school. When both of the victims of the pranks end up victims of murder, the chase is on.
Harry just can't ignore a mystery and her friends have not only come to expect her sleuthing, they join in. After all, they know everyone in town and the surrounding area. The setting is well described, although there may have been a couple of mistakes in Brown's description of Waynesboro, and residents and former residents will know exactly where she has taken us.
These mysteries are always good quick reads with characters we can care about. Be sure to read them all.
Great...give teens another 'bright' idea..........2005-09-11
Actually, this stunt (putting a person's obit in before their death) sounds a little more on the college-age level than on high-school age level. And if it was done giving someone a great obit for being a great person, it could have been complimentary. But everyone who has read Brown's books, knows that when something like this happens, a body is sure to follow...and Harry is sure to follow the body to where it leads her; whether or not it is her business.
My animals roll their eyes at things I do too, so I am sure they don't think my IQ is very high in certain area. They are also prone to charge across my table when it is spread with homework from my chemistry students or papers I am referencing...leading to considerable time spent putting the papers back in order. They amuse me, and I feed them. That's the deal. They also answer the door for the deaf person...me.
I love Brown's descriptions of her characters and the area in Virginia. Under normal circumstances I would love to live in an area like Crozet, though I'd be more in Harry's financial circumstances. Unfortunately, the occurrence of murder in Crozet happens a little to often for my taste (come to think about it, there are a few areas around Pittsburgh where murders are happening too often too now, but the means and motive differ considerably).
Harry and her animals, and her friends make for great light reading. The writing is intelligent, you learn something new everytime, and the characterization is wonderful. And unlike other mystery writers at this time, Brown does not feel the need to fill her books with bad language and sex. A lot of that stuff can be implied without having to resort to cluttering up the readers' mind with trash...

Loose Plot.......2005-03-14
I do enjoy the Mrs. Murphy mysteries, but it sometimes is frustrating because the plots are loose. This book is like that as well. In this book there are some mysterious shenanigans in an exclusive private school in Crozet. Why are people affiliated with St. Elizabeth's dying? Murphy and her pals Tucker and Pewter are bound to find out. And their human, Harry, also gets there in the end, but not before she usually ends up in a one-on-one situation with a murderer. I like the characters in these books, and I think that's what keeps me reading.

Three Great Mrs. Murphy Mysteries!.......2006-06-29
In the 4th book in the Mrs. Murphy and Tucker mystery series, Pay Dirt, a mysterious stranger has ridden into the sleepy town of Crozet, Virginia. Rumbling in on a motorcycle, the appearance of the man yelling for "Malibu" startles the small town, and they try to insist to the man that no woman by that name resides in the area. Even though the residents of Crozet are curious, they have other things on their minds. The town is worried about a computer virus, Threadneedle that is supposed to hit businesses on August 1st. When a huge sum of money goes missing from the local bank, everyone assumes that the bank has fallen victim to the computer virus. Everyone scrambles at the bank to locate the missing funds, and when the biker is found murdered, pieces of the puzzle start to fall together. And when Harry and her two famous animal sleuths get involved in the case, you can be sure that she will find and apprehend the culprit.
The 5th installment, Murder She Meowed, Mrs. Murphy and Tucker Mystery are going to the races. Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry) has been asked to be a fence judge for the Montpelier steeplechase race, and being a huge fan of the sport, she readily agrees. She is a witness to a violent confrontation between two jockeys, and when one of the jockeys is found dead later in the day, she quickly begins to suspect that this was not a simple misunderstanding. The murderer leaves a calling card, and when another jockey turns up dead with a similar card attached to the body, Harry fears that there may be at least two more victims. Along with help from Mrs. Murphy (a tiger cat), Tee Tucker (a Welsh corgi), Pewter (a fat grey cat), and some new animal characters (including mice, several cats, and horses), Harry is able to stop this murderous spree in the competitive world of steeplechase.
In the 6th book in the Mrs. Murphy and Tucker Mystery series, Murder on the Prowl, the little town of Crozet, Virginia is shaken by the appearance of an obituary in the local paper. On its own, it wouldn't be shocking, as people unfortunately pass on each day. However, this obituary is of the headmaster at St. Elizabeth's prep school, and everyone is shocked by his sudden "death". An axe-wielding barbarian princess leads her mercenary trio through a rousing fantasy adventure in Iron Dawn. Barra Coll Eigg Rhum has a basalt axe and a blazing temper to match her fiery hair. At her side walk Leucas, an Athenian warrior of mighty proportions; Kheperu, an Egyptian ex-priest and sometime sorcerer; and her wolf, Graegduz, who isn't tame, just respectful. All they want is to earn a little silver. They start out by tackling a maddened bear in the marketplace of Tyre, but mysteries and dangers compound until they end up facing off against one of the Pharaoh's grandsons and his army of zombies. Matthew Woodring Stover has done a terrific job in his first novel. The characters are funny, likable, smart, and tough. The Bronze Age setting has a Middle Eastern flair; one can almost smell the "cinnamon and pepper in the cedar-laced pine smoke." The sorcerous overtones are seriously threatening, and true unto themselves, not the sort of flimsy magic in which anything can happen and nothing has to be paid for. This is also true of the excellent brawling that fills the book: people get wounded, feel pain, wear filthy bandages, are scarred. People die--although some come back to life in the worst possible way. Iron Dawn is thoroughly enjoyable from cover to cover, as is its sequel, Jericho Moon. --Blaise Selby
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful, entertaining read.......2001-06-20
Though I love fantasy, I tend to avoid reading a lot of fantasy novels, as too many of them turn out to be one in a series of twelve, or doorstop epics with exhaustive appendices and interminable plotlines. That sort of thing is all well and good when one is in the mood for it, but sometimes you just want a light, rollicking adventure, and Iron Dawn delivers that in spades.
Following the exploits of three mercenaries in the Phoenician city of Tyre, Iron Dawn moves along crisply with brisk battles, witty banter, a straightforward plot and a cast of likeable (and hateable) characters. It isn't particularly grand or epic, as fantasy novels go, but it tells a good story and tells it very well. I devoured this book in a few days and gave it a place of honor on my bookshelf. I've already ordered the sequel and am eagerly awaiting it.
Amazon has shown this volume as being out of print, which is a real shame -- I urge you to pick it up used or find it if you can. It's a great read.
funny and realistic.......2000-10-17
The best thing about this book is how it combines "dark and grim" stuff with funny stuff. Life in the Bronze Age was hard and brutal, and Stover portrays it as such. However, Stover peppers the book with genuinely humorous dialogue and characters, which keeps the tone from being too dark. Kheperu the unapologetic pervert was my particular favorite. Cynical, lewd, and cowardly, Kheperu spouts some of the books funniest lines, and somehow ends up doing the right thing. Barra is a strong, solid heroine, and should appeal both to fans of Xena and fans of The Mists of Avalon. The only bad thing about this book was when Barra suddenly developed the "sight", which seemed hokey. Overall, though, a highly entertaining read.
Not exceptional........1999-12-17
What can I say? I did not get very far with this one, the characters seemed like cardboard (the author says they were based on RPG characters). The action justs happens, you feel you need to be in the RPG campaign to get all the character info. I stopped reading it, but may continue sometime in the future. I am starting to believe that in the Science fiction and Fantasy genres only the woman authors are creating characters with any depth. If you are a fan of action, and want to read an RPG-type narrative then this may just be what you are looking for.
I love this book........1999-08-01
Fast-paced, with hard action and a feel of reality to it, Iron Dawn drew my attention on the first page and held it in a steel grip for the rest of the book. I couldn't put it down! The descriptions are vivid, and set the imagination on fire. Barra, Leucas, and Kheperu are all very real people, with pasts and personalities as subtle and potent as they come. Great book if you like playing action sequences in your mind, and don't mind your books tinged with bone and blood. This is a must read!
At last, something different!.......1998-05-12
Set in a timeframe where no writer has gone before, Iron Dawn brings new characters and elements who are both refreshing and compelling. A must!

if you only buy one book, buy this one.......2007-09-22
I bought this week 2 weeks after my laparoscopy, on the same day I had my follow up appt with my gyno, who told me I had endometriosis. My gyno could not get me out of her office quick enough, and couldnt answer any of my questions like 'does it come back? how do i stop it coming back? how do i manage the symptoms? what are my options?' The only thing she could tell me is that it was pretty certain i would be seeing her on a yearly basis for regular laps. Needless to say, i am finding a new gyno, but I still needed answers.
Dian's book answered all of my questions and more. The detailed information in the book on the body, the nervous system, the digestive system, and how everything was affected by endo, made perfect sense alongside the symptoms i have been suffering without explanation or end in sight. I had already been trying to eat well, but her strict dietary suggestions were what i needed to start and commit to a whole new way of eating.
4 weeks later, ive lost 5 kilos, my pelvic pain is gone, my digestive problems are easing, and ive just had my first period since the lap, which i was warned would be longer, painful, heavier than normal - nothing! No pms symptoms, no cravings, nothing! i guess this is what normal feels like! its fantastic. I know ive got a ways to go, but for the first time in years, i have answers and soolutions, and i am actually getting better and going forward, not backward. its a nice feeling.
This book is wonderful!.......2007-01-20
Although I have not had a laproscopy, my doctor strongly suspects that I have endometriosis. Faced with monthly vicodin, missed work, hormone therapy, and future surgery, I was deperate to find a better way. This book filled in a lot of gaps for me about the disease in general, and gave suggestions for a possible nutritional connection (and certain food allergies/intolerances). My doctor was extremely skeptical and dismissive, but I decided to give it a try anyway. I've been on a wheat-free diet for three months now, and the difference in the severity of pain and other symptoms is amazing. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone with endometriosis. I now feel empowered, and that I am finally in control of this disease.
Didn't get much out of it.......2007-01-09
Sorry, but I didn't get much out of this one. Hard to read and boring.
Worth the read.......2006-12-31
My wife has endometriosis I have found this book to be extremely informative and helpful. We feel more empowered and in control of the disease now that we have a better understanding of it.
Informative Textbook.......2006-12-28
I'm halfway through the book and glad I made the investment. The information is excellent and VERY infomative. Going to doctors, scouring the internet and reading other endo books leaves a great deal of information gaps. The book is in many ways a textbook covering the human body in relation to endometriosis.
That being said, there is a lot of antidotal evidence and, in my opinion, debatable nutrition information. The devistation that endometriosis can bring is overwhelming and it leads many of us to become desprite for relief. My doctor, a leading endometriosis researcher, STONGLY disagreed with much of the nutritional information (he said that it wouldn't hurt you, just don't expect it to fix all your problems). After saying that, I still found that the book increased my knowledge tremendously and offers the despirate endo sufferer an alternative option when nothing else is working.

Not for more advanced chefs.......2007-05-05
While I didn't harbor hopes that this cookbook would divulge a secret so commercially-valuable as Famous Dave's BBQ sauce recipes (it doesn't at all, and in fact makes a big fuss at how 'important' it is to guard your secret recipes), I DID hope that it would teach a bit about the flavors involved in the type of food I usually tend to associate with images of New Orleans, Chicago, and all the small town in between. I had hoped it would be at least on par with one of Bobby Flay's books on grilling (incidentally, I'll point out that I heartily support Bobby Flay's openness with his recipes, and his understanding that even if he gives me his exact recipe for Mesa Grill BBQ sauce--which he does in one of his books--my version of it will never taste the same as his).
This book does not offer any of that. I was sublimely disappointed when I opened it up to his 'famous' rib recipe and found that the 'recipe' called for several bottles of his "famous Dave's BBQ sauce". In my opinion, this isn't a recipe, it's a plug for a product. I had hoped to find some discussions about cooking techniques...slow-roasting, smoking, etc, but there is maybe a paragraph on this in one of the recipes, and it's ambiguous at best. What it DOES offer is a small handful of recipes slathered with a thick layer of recipe titles like "Jumpin' Jukin' And Jivin' All-Day Beef Brisket" (requires 3 bottles of Famous Dave's BBQ sauce), an overwhelming amount of photos of various Famous Dave's storefronts, and a cover laden with claims of this book being voted "best in america" for recipes.
If your idea of making 'homemade baked beans' involves buying a can of bakes beans and a bottle of bbq sauce, mixing the two together, and calling it a day, this is the book for you. If you're a food network junkie, if you know what Alinea or El Bulli are, or if you see value in cooking from scratch rather than using preprocessed ingredients, you're probably best to seek elsewhere. I wish I could point to a better cookbook on BBQ-ing, because I know finding one is like searching for a needle in a haystack, but I'm hoping it'll suffice it to recommend against buying this cook.

Dave Anderson has taken the time to give his insight into the history of Famous Dave's. It makes for some interesting reading, but the real gem of this book is the recipes. The bread pudding is sinful. You have to make it at least once in your life.

Christmas time is a real challenge, especially when your "little boys" are
all over 40. This is a great book for the diehard barbecuer or the novice.
They loved it, and Mom is once again the giver of all things cool.

This is a wonderful cook book. Every recipe I have tried turned out perfect. An honest to goodness great book. Every kitchen needs one.

I like my cookbooks. My other favorite cookbooks would be from Paul Prudhomme. This cookbook was very helpful in creating a good BBQ rub and smoking ribs and pork shoulder. I even had to upgrade my smoker. The pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw and homemade sauce is the best sandwich I have ever made. It makes me want to fire up the smoker and get cooking. I have smoked more than I ever have since acquiring this book. Must have for the BBQ smoker in the family!
