Customer Reviews:
Wonderful !.......2007-08-13
This is a true classic murder mystery. It has all the drama and mystery necessary to keep the reader turning each page. I was sorry to see it end. I wasn't aware there was such a magical series of books until recently. The story rose to a slow but persistent climax, maintaining its fantastic storyline, gripping the reader to the last page. Read it, you won't be sorry!
Another wonderful entry.......2007-03-16
Young Jeremy is lucky indeed! In BLIND JUSTICE, the first book in this excellent series, he is saved from the clutches of a thief-catcher by the cunning "sight" of Sir John Fielding. Here he is saved from death itself, having been apprenticed to Ezekiel Crab, a printer, who, along with all of his employees, was slaughtered the day before Jeremy was supposed to start!
I enjoy this series - so far - immensely. Bruce Alexander does a wonderful job taking us back in time, and in this book, we are treated to some old-time London "slang", or flash-talk from a new character, Jimmie Bunkins. This may not be one of the better quotes, but it's a good one: "No, don't you dast lay your daddles on me, and don't tip a mizzle. I've something for the beak. [...] The Beak, he's the cove of your ken, ain't he? [...] You know nicks of flash, ain't it? Can't patter the gammon?"
If my Oxford English Dictionaries weren't so highly placed on my wall and hefty, it would have been fun to look up all of the "queer talk" Jimmie used and research it's etymology.
Bruce Alexander shows his leanings in MURDER, as he singles out a religious sect, or "brotherhood", and makes plain what he thinks of them and their beliefs - one of which is the conversion of the Jews. This brotherhood is one of those lunatic groups (sorry, no apologies) that believes that there are mathematical calculations that can be derived from the Bible telling us when the second coming is happening, AND that this can't happen until all of the Jews have been converted to Christianity. Alexander points out that this particular group is trying to prove one particular date while disproving a date already "proven" for the second coming - 1700. (That's why I say, "no apologies" - how many dates have been proven by concrete biblical numerology already?)
He also shows another side of Sir John Fielding, one that, I admit, I was surprised to see. We already know that he has a soft spot for people forced into positions because they were down on their luck, or born at the wrong time or place, or to the wrong people. Another "category" enters his soft spot, and while some may write the series off because of it, that's jim-dandy by me.
Gripping Reading!.......2006-09-10
I love this Sir John Fielding series. Not only do we get a good look at the Bow Street Runners who were the founding fathers of our current police forces throughout the world, but we get a first-hand look at mid-eighteenth century London. It was by all accounts an exciting time. It was before the repression of the Victorian era, and people lived, loved, laughed and cried the way all people do when they live life to the fullest. And young Jeremy Proctor is such a good narrator for these tales of the great Sir John Fielding and his ongoing search for justice and truth. Jeremy is a perfect mixture of naivety and pluck. The rest of Alexander's characters are as fully rounded as these two main ones, and even his criminals and murderers seemed to walk right off the page as I read. This book's plot is built around The Grub Street Massacre. Six members of a prominant book publisher's household were hacked to death in their homes while they were sleeping. Sir John will not rest until he finds those responsible. Alexander's recreation of this tragic crime is handled with exquisite detail. For those who love historical mysteries like I do, this is not a series to be missed.
Recreates the 18th century in full colour and sound!.......2006-07-11
Recently orphaned Jeremy Proctor, "adopted" by blind magistrate Sir John Fielding and dutifully installed in the position of his assistant, protégé, jack-of-all-trades and utilitarian gopher, narrates a thoroughly entertaining tale of their continuing life together in "Murder in Grub Street". Mere hours before Proctor is to report to a publishing house to begin his apprenticeship, Ezekiel Crabb, the owner, his entire family and two of their staff are found brutally axe murdered. John Clayton, a disgruntled poet fresh from a heated disagreement with Crabb is found wandering in the house, dazed and bewildered, clutching the murder weapon and the constabulary are immediately convinced the murder has solved itself! Fielding, of course, remains unconvinced by the evidence and looks elsewhere concerned that failure to find the real culprit might result in the conviction and execution of an innocent man.
Not to insult any reader's intelligence, least of all my own, but when other apparently unrelated murders and an arson in a nearby synagogue point Fielding's sleuthing in the direction of an outrageous sect of American zealots styling themselves Brethren of the Spirit who would forcibly convert any Jews to Christianity - well, it doesn't take a heavyweight literary analyst to realize the two cases will come together at some point! The plotting is quite transparent and the culprit is easily predicted at little more than the halfway point of the novel.
But the real strength of this novel lies elsewhere - extraordinary characterization and atmospheric embellishment that brings people, time and place to life with a sparkling vitality and a sense of realism that can hardly be rivaled - the slums, the prisons, the docks, pubs, theater, outdoor markets, upstairs, downstairs, Grub Street and the publishing business, of course, courts, gaming houses, bordellos, street walkers, pickpockets, scamps, cut purses and thieves. Jimmie Bunkins, a ne'er do well street urchin that begs to be compared to Dickens's The Artful Dodger and Corrie Swanson, the bright but rebellious teen Goth from "Still Life With Crows", describes Sir John's wisdom, kindness and leadership ability, in a hilarious stream of street lingo that nearly defies understanding:
"What a rum cove he is! I ain't never met such a joe and I don't never hope to. I could be sent to cr*p by such as him and thank him for it."
(Now that would be an interesting and amusing English essay question for further research ... "Compare and contrast the characters of Jimmie Bunkins, The Artful Dodger and Corrie Swanson with reference to the roles of Sir John Fielding, Fagan and Aloysius Pendergast as their benefactors, teachers and mentors!")
A much more graphic and grittier novel than its predecessor "Blind Justice", Alexander has used this novel to present a mystery - not a great one but a darned good one - that brings Georgian England to life in full sound and Technicolor. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Grub street is a bit disappointing, but still good........2004-11-25
Bruce Alexander's second book in the "Sir John Fielding" series is a slightly dropoff from the first. The action happens a little bit after "Blind Justice", where Jeremy was about to be appreniated to Ezekial Crabb of Grub Street, but alas, Crabb and 5 other have been brutally murdered by an unknown assailant(s) who yielded an axe. A mentally disturbed man named John Clayton was found nearby with blood on his clothes, and is charged with the murders, but Fielding believes that Clayton is innocent. Meanwhile, Jeremy saves a poor woman from a building collapse due to shoddy construction. Alexander accurately describes the horrid conditions the London poor of 1768 found themselves in. This is a strong point of the book. Jeremy finds a strange cult to house this woman. Later, this same cult harasses a Jewish synagogue, and again Alexander shows strength in describing Judaism. From there, the killers are found out, and there is a predicable showdown, where Jeremy defies orders to try and save Fielding. Jeremy also shows a darker side of himself in a fight with a street urchin. Enjoyable period mystery

Product Description
In this second adventure, Sir John Fielding, a blind magistrate, comes across a crime that shocks even eigheenth-century London. A bookseller-publisher, his wife and two sons are found murdered in their living quarters above his shop in Grub Street. On the scene, ranting and brandishing an axe, stands John Clayton, identified by the broadsheets as a "mad poet." Clearly, the culprit has been caught, and justice in Fielding's court will be swift. But Fielding himself is not so sure. Discrepancies nibble at him, and easy evidence seems too easy. To satisfy both his curiousity and this conscience, he decides to dig a little deeper with the help of this "eyes," young Jeremy Proctor. What the pair uncover is an astonishingly evil stew of politics, religion, and greed. "One of the Notable Books of 1995 in crime fiction." (New York Times Book Reivew)

Welcome to Mutant Town, the dark corner of New York City where the long arm of the law has been severed clean. Here, the mutant population doesn't sport GQ style or champagne dreams. They eke out each day in squalid tenement rows and filthy streets where only one man and one law can be trusted: the X-Man Bishop.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as other superhero cop dramas.......2006-03-17
District X has an average story and the main characters are the villains more than the heroes, including Bishop, who does not get a lot of face time in this book. For more interesting stories and more action, check out Alan Moore's Top Ten or Bendis's Powers series.
The Marvel Universe's NYPD Blue.......2005-06-17
Looks like Marvel Comics is trying to capitalize on some form of 1990s nostalgia by publishing titles featuring the likes of Cable, Deadpool and now Bishop. Yeah, nothing like attempting to return these third rate characters into the spotlight where alongside the majority of the properties created by the Image Comics founders, it symbolizes not only what was wrong with the X-Men franchise but comics in general during the last decade.
Marvel Comics is simply taking the ball from where DC fumbled it with Gotham Central which is nothing more than a redundant Batman spin-off series dashed with crime drama. Writer David Hine has hooked me with the idea of a police precinct that protects and serves a district that is inhabited by mutants. These are not the kind who are beautiful like Emma Frost or who have grand gifts in the style of Wolverine and Magneto. What we find residing in this ghetto are people who may appear human but could have a genetic DNA that is frog like or who may have tree roots growing out of them whenever they fall asleep. Hardly efficient even less practical for a regular lifestyle. However, these misfits must still obey and adhere to the laws that govern New York City. Enter the X-Men's Bishop.
The mullet sporting Bishop has been retooled from a freedom fighter of the future to a Shaft like federal officer who has been assigned to aid the District X police precinct. David Hine has instantly given the character purpose and while he briefly appears in the first issue, the second instalment demonstrates that he can be interesting when the one dimensional, angst gun toting side of his persona is buried somewhere back in the 1990s. The appeal of the series thus far is not on Bishop himself but on police officer Ismael Ortega (a non mutant) and how he must deal with issues such as domestic disputes, drug dealers as well as a possible gang war involving oddly empowered citizens. Ortega's own personal experience with the day-to-day hardships that mutants and their loved ones endure in our society is an aspect that Hine will hopefully explore further in subsequent issues.
While the partnership between Ortega, Bishop and the other law officers has all the ingredients of a good cop title, it is Hine's ability to give the reader a human aspect to the people afflicted with an aberrant genetic mutation that makes the series a worthwhile read. You are not asked to feel sorry for the folks that are living in the neighbourhood but to understand why they are in a situation that they have not chosen to be in.
Like Hine, David Yardin is another creator in which this series is my introduction to his work. Very impressive. There is a realistic sensibility to his style that makes the setting and characters authentic. There is some great background in many panels and I enjoy the minute details such as how the clothes fall into place as well as how the creases logically follow the postion of the body. The anatomy and facial features are all distinct and well rendered. No 'John Byrne' rubber stamping here where Steve Rogers resembles Hank Pym or Sue Richards is Wanda Maximoff's twin sister if you catch my drift.
The panel designs are straightforward ranging from four to seven per page but Yardin's skills shines where he structures them to maximize a certain scenario or event. The reader easily grasps the focus of what is transpiring throughout the script with Yardin's sense of lens view. This makes the story flow in a clear and concise manner which does not make the reader frustrated by turning back the pages to examine the events again.
While many tunnel visionned fanboys regard Claremont's return to Uncanny as the best title out of the 'X-Men Reload Era', they would not be parroting such false claptrap if they actually bothered to read District X. With Grant Morrison's departure from the X-Men franchise, David Hine & David Yardin are filling a much needed void to spin a fresh perspective and forward momentum about mutants in the Marvel Universe.
District X: X marks the spot!.......2005-03-13
An amazing combination of brilliant, convincing dialogue by Hine and explosive graphics by Yardin & Co. There is Brooklyn and the Bronx. Then there's District X, a section of Manhatten filled with regular mutants, working the hussle of everday life. Follow the story of Ortega, a family man, a rookie cop, exiled from Cuba because his parents were the only thing worse than mutants: poets! His new partner is guess who? No other than the ex X-Man Bishop. These 6 first issues, bound handsomely by Marvel Knights, will delight and entrance all who glipse its glossy pages. Git down on it!

Well-documented explanation of Leaky Gut Syndrome, symptoms and remedies.
Customer Reviews:
Great info about Candida and Leaky Gut.......2007-08-31
When I read this book, suggested by my ND, I no longer felt crazy and alone. All the things that you go through when you have Leaky Gut is overwhelming. To hear from someone who went through it and is on the other side is very encouraging! A must read for someone who has Leaky Gut Syndrome, Candida, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, or a myriad of symptoms.
Great Book!.......2007-03-26
This was packed with information and lots of tips and help. This book had tons of important points and suggestions. If you are toxic (and we all are) you may want to start with this book.
Digestive issues? Read on..........2006-03-22
I thought this book was really helpful for those who are stuggling with their weight or have digestive issues but are unclear why.
The book is organized in sections which make it a breeze to read. The author recounts specific events that happened to her throughout the piece which makes it that much more credible.
Caveat Emptor.......2005-11-13
I read this book, and found it to pretty much be a rehash of ideas and theories that have been around the internet and "hypochondriac" community for a while (I say hypochondriac community because that's how most doctors treat us and we're left to go find our own solutions).
There were NO surprises in this book. No new information. Its been around for years.
Some of these remedies might have worked for some people, but from what I can glean from internet discussion groups, most have not found relief from them, including myself, and rarely, if ever, have all the remedies worked on one person.
This book might be on the up and up, but in the end I was left feeling that this was more of an advertisement by a doctor looking for patients, rather than an autobiography.
I would be interested to hear if any of the other posters have found relief from what is in this book, or are they simply running on hope and some sort of validation that they are not really hypochondriacs, but victims of some medical community scam. If not, you've got to wonder if its not just one more scam preying on those in need.
Been there, done that.
Easy, useful reference.......2005-09-10
The book recaps material from other authors, such as Sherry Rogers, M.D. and other experts, in a handy and straight forward way. Having read numerous more complicated books while struggling with fatigue and brain fog, this one was a breath of fresh air (pun intended). It also has significant original material that I had not read elsewhere. All in all, an excellent read.

Great information.......2007-10-07
This book is clear, and concise yet packed with important information. It's hard to find information specifically about this condition, and rather than scour the internet for questionable information, get this book. It's a quick read and worth every penny.
Good but Basic.......2006-03-14
I purchased this book after finding out that I had leaky gut syndrome - the information provided is good, recommended treatments is the standard throughout the alternative world for this problem.
The down side is that no cases studies or persoanl experiences are available.
Know the facts - don't follow your gut!.......2005-10-02
This book offered a comprehensive overview of the causes, symptoms and health recommendations of leaky gut syndrome and other digestive problems. The self-diagnosis chart was especially helpful. This book gave some information to use to discuss my health concerns with my health practitioner. It was so reassuring to finally have a name to put with my illness!
Very good and informative.......2002-09-10
Nice booklet that goes into a lot of detail for such a little publication. It prompted me to get Jeffrey Bland's Book- "The 20 day Rejuvenation Diet Program" This booklet packs allot of very good and important information into a small space.
I highly recommend it. Leaky Gut is a very important and serious condition to address. Don't wait any longer!

Customer Reviews:
Not for everyone!.......2007-10-01
I was hoping to find some sensible suggestions for calming sinus inflammation associated with food intolerances. Unfortunately this author's approach to eliminating toxins from your system is more than I am willing to undertake. She advocates using chopsticks to examine your waste in order that you can make sure that you are effectively eliminating. I am not going to comb through my poop with chop sticks. I do not think that her advice is particularly practical for most folks. I regret having purchased this book and will take it to my local used bookseller asap.
SO many people need this book and don't even know it...yet !.......2007-09-23
I have the older version and it helped me to heal and go on to become a nutritionist and help others. When I couldn't find anyone who knew what was happening to me, thankfully I found this book. I highly recommend it as well as "Invisible Illness" if you want to learn about what is happening to so many people who are still clueless. Allopathic doctors don't know these facts, they exacerbate the symptoms because they refuse to accept/learn the cause, mostly because it involves nutrition instead of pharmaceuticals - she will tell you everything you need to know !
Don't hesitate if you know something just is not right, you must educate yourself. I'd love to go into details, but just get the book, it's all in there !
An invaluable addition.......2007-04-14

Book Description
Leaky Gut Syndrome is the name given to a very common health disorder in which the intestinal lining is more permeable then it should be. This increased permeability of the gut allows entry of disease, like viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, metals, candida, and toxic materials.
Customer Reviews:
Dr. Locke's brochure.......2002-02-22
This book was a huge disappointment. Although "Leaky Gut Syndrome" is included in the title, the book has only a few pages on this topic. The book consists of chapters about different health problems, each of which contain very little information. Each chapter is only a few pages, with large print, and with brief vague information about each topic, ending in how you should really just go see the doctor (author) or another like practitioner to deal with this problem. The lack of real information is very disappointing. I have researched Leaky Gut a great deal, and I was interested in a book about it, which I hadn't seen. I could have helped her write a much better chapter on it! I guess this book may be good for a person who is completely clueless about holistic approaches....but would then just leave them with no real information. It's a sales pitch, a brochure for her private practice.
Good introduction to improve your health.......2001-12-02
This is a very basic introduction to the subject for people who are totally unfamiliar with health disorders like Leaky Gut, Candida, Parasites, etc.. It gives you a good base to start with for proper health and encourages you to seek out help from a licensed alternative care practitioner. If you've read other books or have a pretty good understanding of these subjects already do not buy this book because you will not learn anything new here. If your new to this subject matter and are looking for an alternative to traditional medicine this is a decent book to start with.

A chronic problem solved!.......2007-05-07
I have suffered with Leaky Gut Syndrome for years, off and on. This was, I believe, caused by a reckless lifestyle in the 60's and 70's. I'm now paying for my wild and crazy days. This product has helped more than anything else I have tried. I still have to watch my diet - I developed multiple food sensitivities - but it is getting tangibly better!
I can now eat corn (couldn't for years), drink a little high quality red wine, and I accidentally had some wheat last week with no rash.
I recommend this product.
