Book Description

Working with her retired CIA friend John Farrell, Mrs. Pollifax must smuggle a manuscript out of Jordan, a document that encodes the shocking truth of Saddam Hussein's reign.

Hardly are the two airborne when the coils of Middle Eastern intrigue begin to unwind. Mrs. Pollifax's seatmate is not the affable Arab businessman he pretends to be. It is not imagination that persuades Mrs. P. that wherever they go, she and Farrell are followed. To elude their pursuers in such a politically volatile country isn't easy. In fact, it can be downright deadly. . . .

2 out of 5 stars Not smart enough to be a CIA agent.......2006-01-31

I haven't read or listened to any of the other Mrs. Pollifax books, but it seems other people's enthusiastic reviews of the book edition are based on their love of the characters rather than on the story itself. As someone new to this series, I have to say this audiobook makes me uninterested in the rest. My father and I had a long road trip and I borrowed this book from the library to pass the time. There were so many clumsy plot devices that I had to wonder how Mrs. Pollifax could be such a wonderful CIA agent yet be so completely dense that she thinks the item slipped into her luggage by the Jordanian man sitting next to her on the plane was merely a nice gift for him to give. Even I am suspicious enough to be alarmed when something I didn't pack shows up in my baggage... and I'm just an average middle-class traveler who has been cheated and swindled plenty while abroad. Even though Pollifax noticed that a car was following Ferrell and her, why didn't she tell her partner so that they could stick together at Petra, instead of letting her partner trot off ahead around a corner so that she was left alone with a stranger? My father and I turned the audiobook off in the middle of disc 3 (of 6) and I'm returning it tomorrow. Neither of us are interested in hearing what else happens or has happened in the previous 13 or so books.

4 out of 5 stars innocent CIA agent.......2005-10-01

This book takes you on an adventure in the deserts of Jordan, with castles, multiple bad guys, camel rides, and a quaint old lady who is also a part time CIA operative. Our hero meets up with an unusual character on her airplane ride across the Atlantic, and the simple job isn't so simple anymore. This book is Murder She Wrote meets Lawrence of Arabia.

4 out of 5 stars Mrs. Pollifax goes to the Middle East.......2003-05-02

Mrs. Pollifax's friend Farrell asks her to accompany him on a mission to Jordan to retrieve the manuscript of a dissident author in Iraq. The author was a friend of Farrell's who was killed because he told uncomfortable truths about the reign of Saddam Hussein. On the flight to the Middle East, Mrs. Pollifax sits next to a man who turns out to be someone other than who he says he is. Farrell and Mrs. P. go through the requisite chases, shootings, and beatings until a happy conclusion is reached. I am curious about why Mrs. Pollifax married Cyrus in an earlier book in the series, because author Gilman manages to keep him well away from his wife's adventures. As always Mrs. Pollifax delights the reader and does not seem to need a leading man.

5 out of 5 stars Much of the same, but still entertaining.......2001-07-25

This entry in the Pollifax canon shares many traits with many of Gilman's other books, but still manages to entertain and intrigue. Yes, Emily has had to wait around a monument to meet an opposite number she's never before met. Sure, she's already been befriended by families and found refuge in the desert. But, somehow, the formula continues to work without feeling stale. An entertaining read throughout.

4 out of 5 stars Another fun trip with an old friend.......2001-02-09

Mrs. Pollifax is at it again. This time, helping Farrell, she travels to Jordan to get a manuscript. Of course, her trip couldn't be that uneventful. She soon finds herself involved in not one, but two cases of international intrige. Can she find her way out of both of them?

This book really felt like coming back to an old friend. The relationship between Farrell and Mrs. P. is wonderful as always. I really do wish that we would see more of Cyrus, however. The new characters are interesting and entertaining. The plot was entertaining and kept me confused about several things until the very end. It was good escapist fun, exactly what it tries to be. If you aren't familiar with the antics of the CIA's secret weapon, buy a copy now. You won't regret it.

A gynecologist "delivers the kind of frank, down-to-earth information about sex and sexuality that so many of us need and crave. With facts, drawings and plenty of plain-spoken advice, this is a great book to share with your daughter when it's time to have 'the talk'" (Linda Villarosa, author of Body & Soul: The Black Woman's Guide to Physical Health).

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you are a woman or are interested in women-A must read.......2007-09-27

Wow! This book contains everything from A to Z and then some. It is, in fact everything NOBODY'S parents told them! As a doctor, I learned new things. --exersizes learning to draw a figure-eight on the floor with the axis of your pelvis??? Whatever you know already, you'll know more when you are done with this well written, encyclopedic book.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best!!.......2007-08-23

I am a nursing student and am slowly building a library of books that I hope to use/loan out info from to patients after becoming a midwife. This is one of the BEST and most complete books on the subject of sex, STD's, and intimacy. It is perhaps the BEST relatively current reference readily available to the public discussing the differences, pro's/con's among contraception. This part of the book is concise without being general. It is especially useful for quick reference.
The only part of the book that I was slightly disappointed with was the section on female/male anatomy. This section could have gone into further detail but overall was sufficient for the general public.
This book is an easy and quick read; it uses informal wording that is easy to understand. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to parents as a guide/supplement to discussing sex with adolescents and believe that it would be appropriate for teens as young as 13. This sure beats having them learn about sex from their friends!!!!
This book is also great for women/men of any age that feel they did not receive "The Talk" as a teen or do not have as much RELIABLE info as they would like.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've read on this topic!.......2005-12-03

Sexuality was considered a taboo topic growing up so I was forced to look elsewhere if I wanted information. I purchased this based on the recommendation from a friend. The author presents the information in a way that makes you feel comfortable. She starts off with sexual anatomy, and chapters about different positions, birth control, safe sex and exercise are included as well as a chapter on talking to your daughter about sex. This is a great book but some will probably find some of the stuff mentioned in here basic.

5 out of 5 stars Neither My Mother or Father ..........2005-09-17

Neither my mother nor my father mentioned things in this book. I have learned a lot along the way, but nothing like reading a well conceived text to enhance one's knowledge. It is well done.
I am dating a lovely woman from a relatively conservative culture. I purchased this book to help me understand how to communicate what can be delicate and intimate topics for people in a relationship especially when articulating sexual topics, technique, anatomy, and new experiences - that might not be easily accomplished. The book has given me some excellent background knowledge and view points that will help me to communicate and give more to my girlfriend. I have found it useful and when my girlfriend reads it I am certain it will be very helpful for her understanding and communicating about sex, bodies, approaches and desires. I appreciate a book such as this.

      5 out of 5 stars It's about time.......2005-07-04

What a wonderful book, and a wonderful author! She truly wants women to enjoy themselves and their sex lives, and to be more informed about their bodies. The frankness of her tone is comfortable rather than shocking; I think she speaks about sex in a way that many women wish they could, without shame or embarassment. She wants us to be confident and comfortable within our own bodies, and I think that is a very commendable mission. As soon as I am done reading it (I'm almost at the end) I'm going to pass it on to my boyfriend. I think men and women could learn a thing or two from it.

High praise to Dr. Hutcherson for saying that her methods and information are just as pertinent for lesbian couples as they are for heterosexual couples, and for older couples, and what have you. Women should love themselves, whatever their age and/or sexual orientation. She is completely non-judgemental. I love it. This book is definitely a permanent part of my library.

One look at ultra popular shows like HBO's Sex And The City, and you quickly come to terms with the fact that the taboos about the "bad girl" are a thing of the past. And yet, many women remain largely uneducated about their bodies and about what gives them pleasure. Combining the authority of twenty years as an ob-gyn and the wit of every woman's smart, savvy best friend, Dr. Hilda Hutcherson answers the questions women can't ask their mothers, don't ask their doctors, but need to know to be in charge of their bodies and their sex lives in What Your Mother Never Told You About Sex. "Through my practice, I have met thousands of women and have found that women's experience of sex is universal," writes Hutcherson. "We all share the same fears, myths, misconceptions, concerns, hang-ups, desires, needs, joys and pleasures." Discussing everything from female -and male - anatomy to the secret pleasures of aphrodisiacs to sexercise, birth control and pregnancy, from overcoming sexual problems to achieving sensational sexual experiences, Dr. Hutcherson addresses every sexual matter that impacts the lives of women.

Steven Raichlen, whose name needs no introduction to fans of The Barbecue! Bible, has spent years tasting the best barbecue the world has to offer. This global exposure is deliciously evident in his newest "bible," Barbecue! Bible Sauces, Rubs, and Marinades, Bastes, Butters, and Glazes. Raichlen's latest cookbook offers a lively introduction to such saucy American standbys as Kansas City-style and Texas-style barbecue while paying due respect to such international grill classics as Indian tandoori, Argentinean chimichurri, Korean boolkogi, and Indonesian satay (the recipes for these, by the way, are carefully authentic as well as delicious). The most important lesson Raichlen offers is his careful explanation of the components of great barbecue, which builds upon different layers of flavor. Variously referred to as wet rubs, marinades, cures, bastes, glazes, or slather sauces, these layers are clearly defined and supplemented by dozens of recipes. How to deploy these layers? According to personal taste, says Raichlen, but he helpfully offers a peek at the structure of a "championship barbecue," which might start with a long deep soak in marinade, followed by a dusting of spice mix, before being basted and glazed during the cooking process. When the meat is ready to be eaten, it is served with a finishing sauce, slather sauce, dipping sauce, or chutney. Raichlen provides fascinating recipes for every step, from the Only Marinade You'll Ever Need to recipes for homemade ketchups and mustards, both classic slather sauces. Novices who have yet to light their first grill and seasoned smoke hands alike will find this guide inspiring and indispensable. --Sumi Hahn Almquist

This is the perfect addition to the The Barbecue! Bible. Some of the recipes are repeats, but most are new.

I like grilling so much that I give a sampler set of some homemade rubs and sauces from this book to family and friends that enjoy grilling, and a select few that didn't...they do now.

After buying this book, you will never settle for store-bought again. That's a promise.

There's a world of grilled food out there, and Steven Raichlen seems to have wandered through all of it the State Department deemed "safe." No Afghanistan, for instance. No Iraq. But not to worry. Any decent conflict produces refugees, and nothing travels quite so easily as your own way with food. So Raichlen availed himself of restaurant cooks in this country where and when he had to--all to get right down to the meat of it.

"Barbecue," as Raichlen points out, is a confusing word in the U.S. because it means so many things, up to and including slow-cooked barbecue with its smoky aroma and succulent charm. The word stands in for the tool itself. It's an event. It's food. It's the style of cooking.

To set the record straight, 90 percent of Raichlen's recipes (there are more than 500, from drinks to appetizers to main courses, salads, and desserts, not to mention sauces and dry rubs) are for grilled foods--and that can mean cooked on a hot grill, a moderately hot grill, a relatively cool grill, or an indirectly heated grill (which is more like an oven than a grill, but that's another story). Raichlen gets into some barbecue recipes: pork ribs, for example, or beef brisket, or chicken. But the reader would be better advised to look elsewhere for instruction specific to barbecue (cooking for long periods of time with smoke at low heat). The results will be more appealing.

But grilling. Well, Steven Raichlen has a lock on grilling. This book is absolutely overwhelming it is so deep, so comprehensive, so far-reaching, so all-encompassing. This isn't one of those chefs with taste memories from a grill in Barbados, now let's try to jazz it up and be clever kind of books. No. This is a book by an author who squatted in the market in Vietnam eating whole grilled eggs dipped in a special sauce, and he gives you the recipe and the technique. You could go set up your own egg-grilling stand in a Vietnamese market with this book. You could open shop in Central or South America. Or North Africa. Or the Middle East. Or Korea. Anywhere food is grilled--be that meat, poultry, seafood, or vegetables--Raichlen's been there and brought home the goods. The real goods.

But there's another angle, too. Raichlen freely shares his travel experiences with you, making this a valuable travel book. And he freely shares his techniques, too, telling you exactly how he learned and all about who taught him. His book is worth it just for the section on salads and sauces. Start there and work your way from cover to cover. Hey, take all summer trying. You won't regret it. Your life will never be the same. You'll probably find yourself thinking that if one grill in the backyard is good, two is no doubt better. See? You're already on your way. Let Steven Raichlen be your guide. --Schuyler Ingle

The DRY RUB RECIPES alone are worth the price of the book. But there is SO much more.

You get the World Famous BEER CAN CHICKEN; easy and impresses everybody. Crispy on the outside and moist and tasty on the inside.

For you non-drinkers, it's about the can keeping the chicken vertical, not the beer... Soda cans work just as well, as Allen points out.

For you beer drinkers, ya gotta drink half a can per chicken... tell the wife it's in the recipe.

Allen instructs on how to grill meat (not just steak), fish, and veggies....ALL TYPES OF VEGGIES. The grilled onion platter is my favorite hors douvre. There are recipes and instruction here for things you might not have thought about grilling, and Allen makes it EASY. If you've done any grilling at all, you have most of the skills already.

        Book Description

It's the bible behind the Bible. From Steven Raichlen, author of the bestselling The Barbecue! Bible, comes HOW TO GILL, a lively, fully illustrated introduction to the techniques of cooking over to live fire.

Whether throwing a few burgers and dogs on the grill for the kids or barbecuing a whole pig for a neighborhood block party, HOW TO GRILL shows exactly how it's done - and done best - in more than 1,000 full-color photographs matched to the author's expert, detailed instructions.

        Choosing the right grill.

        Choosing the right fuel.

        Stocking the essential tools.

        Setting up a work area.

        Building the best fire.

Picking the correct method - direct grilling indirect grilling, barbecuing, split roasting, roasting in the embers.

        Managing the cookout.

You can treat it as a primer or as a refresher - the fundamentals set the stage for all grilling heroics to come. The very first technique in the book elevates backyard barbecuing to a new level: Hickory Smoked Prime Rib. It covers the fine points of indirect grilling a large piece of meat along with the technique for using wood chips to create a smoke flavor, and it shows how to French the ribs for a jaw-dropping presentation.

Technique by technique, recipe by recipe, the book runs the gamut of grilling skills: How to jerk pork. How to spatchcock a chicken. How to grill an asparagus raft, a pizza, oysters, tofu, pears, lettuces, delicate mushrooms, scallops, even a whole lamb.

Says the author, If it tastes good cooked, it'll taste even better grilled.

I have enjoyed this book this summer. I have used several of the tips and receipes all to great success. The only problem I have with it is the binding is coming apart. About 30 pages fell out last time I pulled it out. Not real happy with that since it is fairly new but I should be able to fix it somehow. Anyway this is a great book ... regardless of experence level.

Wonderful format and excellent recipes. I've been using it for about 3 weeks and I haven't had a dud yet. You have to absolutely try the Beer Can Chicken. You will never eat chicken any other way again!

4 out of 5 stars Some good recipes, but heavily padded, and with some noteable flaws.......2007-08-21

Despite it's popularity as a best seller, I think this book is rather over-rated.

        STRENGTHS:
        * This book has lots of comforting full-color photographs for the benefit of culinarily adventerous n00bs.
        * This books covers a fairly broad array of grilling recipes ... meat, fish, vegetables, fruit ... there's a little bit of something for almost everyone, which is exactly what they set out to do, in order to maximize sales. Charcoal is preferred, but this book is minimally gas friendly too ... but only if your burners are of the front-to-rear variety. If they're side to side, you're SOL when it comes to most 'indirect heat' techniques.
        * Some of the recipes are actually pretty tasty, which partially compensates for some of the serious flaws listed below. One standout for me is the whole butterflied marinated leg of lamb (which I've since improved upon). Nice recipe, but too much scallion.

        NITS:
        * This books sacrifices depth for breadth - in other words, it covers a LOT of turf, but none of it exhaustively or well.
        * This book is heavily and gratuitously padded with needlessly repetative and unnecessary fluff. Case in point - virtually every recipe says to start your grill, and then wastes a FULL PAGE repeating, over and over and over again (with the same color photos) how to start and bank a 2 or 3-tier charcoal fire, for direct or indirect grilling. Cutting out that wasted repitition would have left room for (I kid you not) at least 33% more recipes, for the same page count. Can you say "RIP OFF" ? I knew you could.
        * The photographer they hired is a cheater, and a gimick-hound, and nothing irks me faster than photographs (and cookbooks that use them) that lie and deceive. Case in point - if you look any almost any of the close-ups, you will spot right away that most of the grilled items were BAKED (not grilled) off camera, and that the food photographer merely made them APPEAR grilled by branding them with hot wires, and then laying them on a stone-cold-never-before-used grill. There are, however, a few very helpful sequences ... such as the one on how to prep and grill a whole baby lamb (something I'm looking forward to attempting sometime this coming year).
        * Some of the recipes are just plain absurd. I mean come on - what [...]-retentive cook is going to butterfly a dozen hot dogs, stuff them with cheese and jalepeno slices, tie them closed, grill them (somehow without making a total mess), and then de-string and serve them before the cheese hardens back up again ? HELLO ?

4 out of 5 stars When You Crave the Very Zest.......2002-02-18

What, you may ask, is an intellectual snob such as myself doing reviewing a TV series cookbook on barbecuing. Well, I have a small confession to make - I love barbecued foods, but my lifestyle doesn't give me many opportunities to indulge. A friend gave me this book, probably in the hope of widening my horizons, and has succeeded. I intend to convince everyone I know to have a barbecue and make goodies from this book.

Ainsley Harriott, who has brought the madcap back into cooking, has made this into a treasure chest of unusual and delicious sounding recipes. He includes recipes for 41 sauces and relishes alone, which I find overwhelming. He then goes on to create page after page of appetizers, main courses, vegetables, side dishes, breads, desserts, and drinks. Colorful photography guarantees that the reader with be tormented by the desire to eat everything one sees.

In spite of silly names like Chargrilled Pineapple Chicken Kiss-Kiss and Colorful Calabrian Lamb Patties, the recipes are actually quite sensibly done. Ingredients are laid out and instructions are carefully stepped out. Sections on equipment, barbecuing tips, and suggested menus pretty much guarantee that almost anyone can go from novice to master of the grill with few hitches. Why settle for burgers when you can dine on Barbecued Lobster with Three Flavored Butters?

I own quite a few barbecue books and I check-out and read many from my local library as well. This book was given to me as a gift from someone and I sat down with it for about 20 minutes, after which I threw it away. Their "tips" are falsehoods and sometimes just completely wrong, "lower the grate and sear the meat to seal it...". You can't seal meat. The layout of the book is cumbersome, and the suggestions and most of the recipes are misrepresented as "easy-to-do". Pass this one over!
