love this series.......2007-05-13
This is a very entertaining mystery set in England. It is a good type of book to keep your interest. It is hard to know who did the deed until the very end. The characters are lovable and easy to keep up with.
A cracking good story!.......2005-10-16
This is a really good story in the Mrs. Jeffries series. In it we have what seems to be a number of unrelated events, but when Mrs. Jeffries and her crew get to work to try to help a woman who feels her life is in danger, they uncover a very heinous murderer. And they do all this as usual without letting on to their beloved Inspector Wistherspoon what they are doing in their efforts to help him solve the mystery. These books are all about the characters and I am getting to know and really love the characters in Upper Edmonton Gardens, and sometimes the plot of the book is a bit weak as Ms. Brightwell delineates her characters. But that is not the case this time. There is a really tight plot and a wonderful mystery. A really strong entry in the series!
A good cozy series.......2000-11-08
The house on Upper Edmonton Garden belongs to Scotland Yard's Inspector Weatherspoon, a police officer with a homicide resolution rate of 100 %. Except for the participants, no one, including the inspector, realizes that his success is due to his household staff "guiding" him through the quagmire of an investigation.
The latest case comes from a previous murder inquiry. Martha Dowling asks the Weatherspoon household for help. Her employee Annabeth Gentry inherited a fortune, a home, and several murder attempts ever since her dog dug up the body of a pick pocket near her new residence. The caretaker of a school near Dowling's estate is also killed. Weatherspoon and his unofficial team begin to make inquiries.
This is the sixteenth installment in the delightfully eccentric Victorian mystery series yet the story line retains a fresh thought provoking feel as if MRS. JEFFRIES WEEDS THE PLOT is the first novel. Still, the return of the cast feels like old friends are visiting. The mystery is well drawn even though a hint at the identity of the killer at the midpoint seems a bit early, but it does not take away from Emily Brightwell's wonderful historical amateur sleuth tale.

Eek!.......2005-05-19
By all means, read this book for the recipes, but that is all it is, a cookbook. Don't read it for the narrative. For an author who claims to want to share her love of a generation, she knows precious little about it. One would think she would have read more. The number of factual errors is astounding. Irritating. Where is Dorothy Parker? Where are the biscuits and toppings and dry sherry made so famous by the Murphy's? Although the food is mentioned time and again in the many biographies, it is nice to read the actual recipes, except for Zelda's, which she had penned herself. Not worth it.
For Francophiles in Paris or at home, this book is a must!.......1999-02-02
This wonderful book - that reads like a fine collection of short stories - makes Paris in the heyday of its expatriate invasion come alive like no other I've read. Hemingway, Stein, Fitzgerald at al lived and wrote and feuded in Paris like nobody else ever will again, but what they ate is still there and available to us all. The food and its aromas that rise out of the pages of this charming, beautifully written book send me back to that time and place like the most vivid time machine. Suzanne Rodriguez-Hunter is as authoritive with her food as she is with her Lost Parisans, and her book will go with me the next time I go to Paris. Meanwhile it brings a heady whiff of Paris home to me.
Beautiful.......1999-01-09
Dynamic, and conceptually unique, this book is filled with fascinating anecdotes, quotes, and recipes from the likes of Gertrude Stein, Hemingway, Rousseau and on... For, "Living one's art" was a commonplace philosophy for many of the lengends (and some obscures) who are included in this charming book. Food, drink and love! (Joyce's oysters and Jimmie's aphrodisiac) What better kindling for inspiration is there?
Book Description
The work of three major California writers in the context of the landscapes they loved. John Muir, Mary Austin, and Gary Snyder are perhaps best known for their connection to specific California ecological regions--Muir's Sierra Nevada "Range of Light," Austin's southern "Land of Little Rain," and Snyder's "Kitkitdizze" region of the north. In Reading the Trail, ecocritic and outdoorsman Corey Lewis proposes a provocative new way to read and interpret the classic works of these major nature writers and to bring their ideas into the discussion of ecological values and viable responses to the current environmental crisis.
The literary work of Muir, Austin, and Snyder reflects intimate and passionate knowledge of their chosen regions. Their activist efforts contributed to the preservation of wilderness areas and national parks in the ecosystems they lived in and wrote about. In Reading the Trail, Lewis combines a lucid, perceptive discussion of their work and ideas with an engaging, closely observed account of his own trail experiences as a hiker/backpacker and volunteer trail builder, thereby achieving a new and deeper appreciation of their writing and values. He proposes that such a combination of literary study and experiential projects allows teachers to enrich the understanding of students and lay readers to find new insights into the work of nature writers and the purpose and importance of the environmental movement. The book will be inspiring reading for both teachers of literature and natural science, and for lovers of the outdoors seeking new ways to explore the natural world.

Book Description
A blizzard savaged the mountain peaks, but at an inn called the Hunters' Haunt, travelers found safe refuge, a cozy room, and a roaring fire. All but Omar, the Trader of Tales -- against whom the innkeeper had been nursing a grudge. But before he could pitch Omar out into the storm, his other guests proposed a contest: if Omar could top a roomful of their tallest tales, the storyteller could win his room and board.
For Omar the stakes were life and death. That gave the contest some spice.
So as winter winds whipped about the little inn, lies and truths and fabulous fabrications swirled before the blazing hearth. The innkeeper and his pretty sister; the merchant and his blushing bride; the dowager and the crusty captain of her guard; the scribe, the maid, the minstrel: they all poured out their tales, and Omar wove them together. Before they knew it, their very lives were intertwined, and their separate stories were spinning relentlessly to a single conclusion no human could have foretold!

Omar Strikes Again................2005-08-16
Hunters' Haunt is the Second (and sadly only other) time Omar, the teller of tall tales, appears in Duncan's books. It can be read as a 'stand alone book' or before or after REAVER ROAD (the other Omar book), which as a huge Duncan fan I would of course recommend buying as well. The book is set in the backdrop of Omar literary telling tales to save his life with a story competition against the other guests in a snowbound inn. The book is very cleverly written and while I suppose it could be considered one of his early works, it still delivers the high quality of this much underrated (at least in Europe!) Author. I have tried pestering Duncan by email to extend his GREAT GAME series but he calmly replied that whilst it might be a good idea commercially, he felt, as an Author, he had explored that world as far as he should and it would only dilute the story if he carried on. (I hope you're reading this David Eddings & Raymond E Feist, stop now, please!) So I guess there is no point in wishing for just one more Omar book? To summaries: Great book, buy it. If you have yet to read a Duncan book, start here!
Another good one!.......2000-08-12
Omar tells stories once again, this is another well written book by Dave Duncan, reminiscent of the Canterbury tales.
Clever Delivery.......1999-02-26
Did not think the story being told was near as interesting as Duncan's very good Rap series. However the way he told the story was very entertaining and more interesting than the story they were telling. Very neat little twist at the end also (I assumed I knew how this one would end).

Well Tanned Phantoms.......2005-10-26
The American South has long been known as an area that has more than it's share of ghosts and haunts. This may be caused by the peculiar history of the South, or maybe it is the magical heritage of the many Celtic settlers who came to the area. I like to think however that it is simply because the South is such a lovely place that even the dead don't want to leave. Whatever the reason though, book after book has been published dealing with the haunts of Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and the Carolinas but with the exception of St. Augustine Florida has been very under represented. Now, thanks to Joyce Moore, those of us who plan vacations with the idea of visiting a few haunted sites have a new reason to visit Florida.
This book is written, exactly as the title suggests, as a tour guide to Florida's haunted locations. The author has taken the time to visit the sites she writes about and has an enthusiasm that shines through in her writing. She has even managed to catch an unusual image in one of her pictures that may well represent one of the ghostly subjects of this book. This is also a very well organized book with each chapter beginning with a basic history of the location in question followed by a history of the haunt and then a small section about other things to do while in the neighborhood. This last section more often than not deals with places to eat along with the specialty of the house. One often works up an appetite while chasing ghosts so this section is particularly appreciated. The most notable and praiseworthy thing about this book though is that each chapter contains accounts from people who have had first hand experiences with the ghost or ghosts who are haunting the location being discussed. This fact alone lends a great deal of credibility to this book.
On the downside, many of the stories in this book tend to lack depth and I can't help but feel that the book would have been better if a few stories had been dropped altogether so that the stories that remained could have been given more attention. Three or four of the stories included were on the weak side and wouldn't have been missed at all. For example, the Coral Castle is certainly a fascinating site but it's worth as a place to hunt ghosts is questionable. On the other hand, the story of the Artist House in Key West and particularly the house's connection with Robert the doll could have easily have filled several more pages. Just the very mention of that doll gives me the creeps for some reason yet the chapter dealing with it took up only two pages in this book.
This author's enthusiasm and her pleasing writing style make this book a very fun and educational read. She gives what appear to be very precise directions to the locations she writes about along with the number to call for more information. She has put a lot of time and effort into turning out a quality book and she has accomplished this in an admirable fashion. The often-overlooked ghosts of Florida have finally been given their due.

Customer Reviews:
I am disappointed in this cookbook!.......2007-08-14
I am very disappointed in this cookbook. My husband and I have just begun to watch our cholesterol and we thought an American Heart Association cookbook would be a good start. Unfortunately, I've read through the entire book and can't imagine eating this way. These low fat, low cholesterol recipes are just worked over true-blue American food which is generally inedible no matter what! I'm going to look for other cookbooks and other recipes that actually have flavor, interesting ingredients, and a reason other than "low cholesterol" to make it to our dinner table.
Nice recipes that are low in fat and cholesterol.......2007-07-18
Heart disease is a major cause of death among Americans (number one, in fact). As the book makes clear, the good news is that certain steps that an individual takes can measurably accept the odds of suffering from or succumbing to heart disease. One of these is by reducing fat and cholesterol in one's diet.
Some low fat and low cholesterol cooking can be very bland and disappointing. The recipes here tend to be pretty good, providing good taste as well as healthy food.
With chili, for example, use a proper oil for cooking, use lean ground sirloin, use no-salt tomato sauce (to be honest, I scarcely ever use salt in recipes, even when called for, and I haven't noticed any problems--but I also use other herbs and spices and these suffice very nicely). The result? A nice chili with lower levels of fat and cholesterol.
The same with other recipes. A little common sense with fat and cholesterol and one can end up with tasty meals that are also healthy meals. Not all recipes are necessarily equally tasty, but experimentation will tell the reader which ones to add to the repertoire of dishes that one prepares.
So, a useful cookbook. Interested in reducing fat and cholesterol? Take a look.
Very useful.......2007-06-07
My wife and I like the recipes in this book.
I recommend it
Not the normal quality recipes from AHA.......2007-05-17
I purchased this book because we have cholesterol issues in the family, and so far, I've made 3 or 4 recipes involving beef. They've been very dry and not visually appealing (with kids, this is important!:)) I've found most of the entrees have been time consuming to prepare as well, lots of ingredients. Truthfully, the only thing I'm enjoying from the book is the information in the beginning about cholesterol and how it affects your health- lots of great informative points on this but the recipes are just not very tasty. I also own American Heart Association's Meals in Minutes, which is much better.
Disappointment.......2007-05-14
I have used the first AHA Low-Fat, Low Cholesterol book since its publication. Have not had this issue long enough to try many of the recipes but, frankly, have not seen many that interest me. Having had a chance to look this book over first, I would not have purchased. If you are a first-time user, perhaps you will feel differently.
Book Description
When one of America's most talented and best-loved chefs reinterprets the great American classics, the result is Chef Paul Prudhomme's Seasoned America, a beautifully illustrated collection of American favorites made even better. In his new book, Chef Paul transforms the plainest of dishes -- like a beef noodle casserole made from ground meat and pasta -- into delicious company fare. The humble tamale pie, lowly turkey hash, and ordinary ham loaf become truly memorable in his capable hands. His Texas Chili may be the best anyone has ever tasted. Mulacalong Chicken, a specialty of Charleston, South Carolina, has a soft curry flavor that's indescribably wonderful. He seasons traditional regional and ethnic dishes in unconventional and surprising ways that make a world of difference: thyme in the West Coast Oyster Stew, nutmeg in the New England Boiled Dinner, cardamom in Iowa Chicken and Corn Pot Pie, cumin in Oklahoma Fried Chicken and Biscuits, coriander in Brooklyn Borscht.Chef Paul's unique concept of "building" a dish to create maximum flavor and texture is used in many of his recipes, and a special section of the book explains exactly how it's done, in language anyone can understand. For example, Milwaukee Potato Soup has a base of grated potatoes for thickening and flavor, as well as two different sizes of diced potatoes for texture.Other formerly "inelegant" dishes are treated to the remarkable -- and frequently unorthodox-Chef Paul touch, to create food no one is likely to soon forget: A slow -- roasted, boneless stuffed chicken emerges juicy and brimming with flavor in Atchafalaya Boneless Roast Chicken. Indian fry bread topped with a spicy lamb stew and fresh salsa becomes the world's best Navajo Tacos.Through colorful stories, special tips on techniques, and invaluable information, you'll find all the encouragement you need to experiment with dishes you've always taken for granted. From Albuquerque Burritos to Lower East Side Latkes, Michigan Miner's Pasties to San Francisco Cioppino, Seasoned America and Paul Prudhomme will guide you step by step toward the successful creation of extraordinary American food.
Customer Reviews:
Paul's second most important cookbook, but possibly my favorite.......2007-06-13
I've had this book since it came out and have used it to death. The recipes are very traditional in technique, but tend to have a little extra zing due to Prudhomme's spicing tendencies. I consider that a good thing as it rescues many of these traditional dishes from the mediocrity that cafeterias and timid home cooks have enforced upon them. I've run into a few recipes that are just "good" but many of them are homeruns. The pasta primavera, black bottom pie, Basque chicken and shrimp, San Francisco Cioppino, and Chicken a la King are all recipes that I've revisited many times.
A few reviewers appear to have issues with some of the recipes, but I simply have not experienced these problems. One of the critical things in Paul's recipes is often the browning stages and it requires a cook's attention to what's happening on the stove as opposed to slavishly watching the clock and hoping for cooking alchemy to happen. Especially when cooking on electric stoves, which have a greater risk to burn and scorch Prudhomme's flavorful pan-bottom crusts, I find I have to turn the heat down a little and be ready to add stock and scrape when the pan needs it, not a minute or two later.
As far as "over spicing", well everybody has their opinions, but I think Prudhomme typically nails it for my tastes. Texas shrimp and rice too hot? Not for me, but it most likely is for some. For foods that have too much spicey heat for more delicate palates, the cook needs to be willing to subsitute or cut back on the ground peppers. Paprika is a pretty easy substitute for New Mexico red chile. I've often done this when cooking for a more general crowd. Prudhomme often suggests that a cook make adjustments to suit their tastes, so one should not be afraid that the recipe police will show up if you make those changes.
Out of all of the cooking I've done, I've probably pointed more people to this cookbook than any other for that "knockout" dish that I brought to the table. I consider this cookbook essential and recommend it every chance I get.
Lots of flop recipes in this book.......2007-05-21
Normally I love Paul Prudhomme's recipes but this book has a lot of clinkers. Recipes that don't work and just plain mistakes. Just tonight we tried to make the Oklahoma fried chicken and biscuits. The chicken was ok, lacking any interesting flavor, but the acompanying biscuit recipe was a complete flop. As soon as the biscuit dough hit the oil it just dissolved into a mess. They obviously never tested this recipe. We ended up having just the bland chicken for dinner. Another recipe that totally failed for us was the tamale pie. A burned, crumbly mess. We had to make something else. It's very difficult to tell which recipes are going to work and which ones aren't. We made the stuffed peppers which turned out ok, but there was a mistake in the preparation instructions in that they never mentioned adding the brown sugar from the ingredients list. We didn't realize it until we were cleaning up. Other problems with this recipe is that it called for dried tarragon and cilantro, both of which are not meant for human consumption. Fresh versions of these are ok, but the dried versions are inedible. Since I didn't have fresh I just left them out. Another recipe that was never tested. When you go to Paul's website there is no way to send him an email to tell him about these problems either. To top this all off, our copy of this book was bound poorly and big bunches of pages are falling out. Stick with Paul's first cookbook, Louisiana Kitchen and don't get this book.
Best Cookbook.......2004-11-25
I must have 50 cookcooks, but this is my favorite. The recipies need to be followed precisely, however the directions are excellent. Every dish I've made from this book has been aromatic and full of flavor. Be careful, they are also full of salt and calories! But if you want to WOW your guests, select a few of these recipies and enjoy!
My favorite recipe is the Milwaukee Potato Soup. Be careful, it takes a full 90 minutes to prepare! The New England Butternut Bisque introduced me to the wonders of squash and is much easier to make than the Potato Soup. The Mulacalong Chicken is flavorful, although I prefer to cut out the bell peppers. The Chicken Paprika is devine.
Every recipe I've tried from this book has been wonderful. Buy this and prepare for a treat!
A great way to learn how to spice food.......2003-11-02
I've used this book for years. Some people rely on stricly fresh ingredients, others like to cook with dried spices. Prudhomme's a big dried spice guy. Yes, garlic purists will be aghast that he uses garlic powder. But these recipes work, and he does a great job of coming up with recipes that people will actually use. The dishes are NEVER bland and the flavors are often very complex and comingle well. His technique is to use the same spice mixture in different ways- frying some in oil, adding some in the middle of the cooking, adding more just before serving, et al- and it really helps add complexity and richer flavor to a dish! Some of these recipes are clunkers, as are many in most cookbooks, but I return time and time again to a fair amount of these recipes. My biggest critique- his recipes are fairly straightforward, but they are sometimes unnecessarily complicated- Yyou can streamline them without poor results. For instance, use canned broth in the Tetrazini recipe and you will save yourself about three hours. Also, I really think that you can make his Kentucky Burgoo in less than two days, but that's actually what the recipe calls for! But you've already made many of the dishes in this book before, only without all the flavor. Paul was "kicking it up a notch" long before Emeril got to New Orleans. Buy a cheap used copy and tell me that it wasn't one of the best investments you've ever made after you've tried three of the recipes! My favorite recipe: Basque Chicken and Shrimp with Wine. Fantastic!
Seasoned America-My Second copy!!!.......2003-09-29
Chef Paul has done it again! I absolutely love this cookbook. I have two copies! The first one so worn I had to purchase a second. Every dish I've made has been wounderful. You just can't go wrong with any of Prudhomme's recipes. The Buffalo Wings are the best I've ever had! Be sure to try the Black Bean Soup, Sopa de Albóndigas,Baked Stuffed Tomatoes,Indiana Dutch Cabbage Rolls,Chicken Paprika. These are just some of our favorites. You'll get the best results following the recipe exactly. Paul Prudhomme is my favorite chef, and soon he too will be yours. Don't pass up this great cookbook.
