A great read.......2006-09-10
One of my favorite Carolyn Haines books. Judas burning is a gripping tale set in the backwoods of south Mississippi with an array of eccentric characters, realistic geographic descriptions and plenty of twists.
A superbly crafted novel about a woman's return to her home town in an attempt to uncover the murderer of her late father.......2006-04-09
Judas Burning by Carolyn Haines is a superbly crafted novel about a woman's return to her home town in an attempt to uncover the murderer of her late father, and with hope find contentment in the small-town atmosphere. As readers will discover, that are some strange occurrences in the river nearby, leading locals to believe a great evil lurks in the bed of the river, as well as a much deeper case for main character Dixon Sinclair and her moderate partner and town Sheriff, J.D. Horton. Judas Burning is very highly recommended and engaging reading, and to be given especially high praise for the gripping and perpetually intriguing tale it tells.
It will keep you up all night!.......2005-12-06
Once again Carolyn Haines has written about her native Mississippi and the people who live in that beautiful and mystical state. Things happen and lives are changed in Jexville, far from the "maddening crowd" of Atlanta traffic and Memphis' Beale Street. The nearby river looks quiet and peaceful, but there are dark and angry currents and ghastly events take place. Two teen age girls disappear, a statue of the Virgin Mary is vandalized, and tension rises even higher when Dixon Sinclair, a journalist who has returned to her old home town, and the local sheriff try to unravel the mysteries. The population of Jexville is not large, but the characters who live there are and the plot will keep the reader on the edge of the page until the very end. After that, perhaps one could sit by the dark and swirling river and sip some sweet tea, but not quietly as this story will be remembered for a long time..

Thriving characters, complex plot, but..........2007-07-21
If you like conflicts with swords, magic, and political intrigue, this is a book worth reading.
Stan Nicholls creates a believable world of engaging characters whose desires weave a nice complex plot. Among the storylines, Reeth Caldason is the main character, a swordsman who is near eternal but with a terrible price of a berserker rage he can not predict nor control. He suffers from a magical malady or curse, which he searches for a cure. Nicholls does a good job of keeping track of the different storylines, but it may be to many for some readers who want more "page" time with Reeth and a few others. The philosophical debates over the value of magic seemed overdone, like arguments between advocates for and against gun control. The action scenes, especially the battles, cast a vivid vision that makes Nicholls a promising fantasy author.
The late David Gemmell wrote a blurb for this book and that was good enough for me to pick it up. Nicholls is no Gemmell, except for the battle scenes. That's good as he establishes his space in the world of Fantasy. The use of modern references did not distract me as it appears seamless and fitting for this series' world. The ending sets up the next book in the series with no real closure of the first. BUT, I found the end satisfying enough that I want to read the next book in the series. With so many series vying for attention, Nicholls' work is well worth reading.
Amazing setup but poor execution.......2007-03-05
Long ago magic permeated all that was to the point that existence was a waking dream. Over time the dream ended, but man's ability to shape reality to his whims remained. While the world shaking powers of the Founders have been lost, magic is still a potent force capable of fantastic miracles. Massive castles cling to floating islands through the power of the Craft while magicians form staggeringly complex illusions. Two massive empires, Gath Tampoor and Rintarah, have utilized the power of magic to conquer the majority of the civilized world, with only a few contested areas remaining. Meanwhile, the merciless order of Paladins retains a veneer of neutrality, playing the empires against each other and working for both under the facade of keeping peace. Bhealfa, one of the last contested islands, has become a hotbed for rebellion under the guiding hand of the Covenant, a group of dissident wizards bent on overthrowing Imperial rule.
While this sounds like a recipe for a full throttle, five star fantasy extravaganza, The Covenant Rising fails to deliver the goods. There's no question that the author spent a good long time crafting the world and system of magic in this series, but his method of telling the story about that world is unconvincing and occasionally even boring. The main storyline focuses on Reeth Caldason, an enigmatic warrior who has lost the ability to die, and Kutch, an apprentice wizard who follows Reeth around like a lost puppy. Apparently Reeth has become tired of immortality after only a mere eighty years, so he seeks out the most powerful wizards in the land to break his "curse". Along the way he unwillingly becomes embroiled in the Covenant's rebellion against the two opposing empires. While Reeth and Kutch are ostensibly the most important characters, their stories are also the least interesting. Reeth spends the entire novel brooding and maintaining his strong and silent exterior, while Kutch follows Reeth around doing nothing but being constantly annoying and ineffectively attempting to work magic.
A major problem facing The Covenant Rising is that nearly every facet of the story contains something too modern for the fantasy setting. The spy network of Gath Tampoor is called the Council of Internal Security, which the characters refer to as the CIS (reminiscent of FBI, CIA, etc.) When instances like this pop up the reader can't help but lose any sense of immersion in the book's fantasy world. Lengthy discussion between members of the Covenant on the best method of government don't help the matter much either. Another issue that strains the credibility of the novel is that the reason for the Covenant's existence doesn't entirely make sense. The group's overseers are composed of dissident wizards who refuse to register with the government to become legal and legitimate practitioners of magic. The problem with this is that there isn't really any reason for them to not register themselves as magic users. The process of registration doesn't require them to do anything that breaks their moral codes, and with the sheer number of practicing magicians in the world they could still effectively hide themselves as rebels (in fact, it would be easier to hide their rebel affiliation and present the facade of being law abiding citizens).
The minor characters sprinkled throughout the novel, such as the pacifist rebel Kinsel and the prostitute-on-the-run Tanalvah, are the main reason to keep reading. The insane prince Meylobar, who unfortunately only appears a few times during the course of the story, is hands down the most intriguing cast member. His paranoia that someone is trying to kill him grows daily until he becomes convinced that Death itself is stalking him, and the only way to evade an untimely demise is to wipe out the entire population of his subjects so that Death has nowhere to hide from him.
The Covenant Rising has an amazing setup, but the overall execution is poor. Hopefully the problems in this novel are rectified in the rest of the series, because the intricately crafted world of the Dreamtime series practically demands a higher quality novel.
It's hardly even fantasy.......2006-12-07
Everything in this book is not only cliche but just a thin veneer for items we have in this world. The so called special units get what amounts to identification photos. All magic is referred to, annoyingly, as "glamours", and has to be bought. On top of this there are other numerous inventions which, from magic, take the form of what we have in the now, today-talk about no imagination! In short Nichols substitutes just about everything with magic. There are even, more or less, cars.
In terms of character development, there is none. The author just lays the story out, at times with such heavy exposition I thought I would suffer narcolepsy. He freezes the action at times and just telling you the plot in the most uncreative way. We don't even get a Captain exposition.
The so called action sequences do nothing to further the plot and come off as empty scenes that are so over written as to grow boring by the second paragraph. How people can compare this guy to Martin is an insult to Martin.
Rather than keeping us wanting the characters to get together I didn't care when it happened. I was so overladen with exposition I nearly fell asleep in the 150 pages it took for what I knew was going to happen. The plot is so overcomplicated, and lacking any irony I wondered why, or how in the world this guy has been able to get a triple book deal.
Potential, but no characters.......2005-01-25
The Covenant Rising is a better book in concept than in execution. The story which revolves around an apprentice wizard and an eternal, but "damaged" warrior who is the last of his race has great potential in the David Gemmell Vane of fantasy (formulaic, but incredibly real). However, unlike Gemmell, Nicholls doesn't flesh out characters to the point where the reader cares about them. No matter what excitng or horrendous adventures that his characters go through there was no way to "enter" the characters and find any real empathy. Although a relatively short novel Covenant drags.
Nicholls has taken a page from the David Gemmell school of writing, unfortunately he took the wrong page.
A perfect fantasy.......2004-11-16
Bhealfa is a caste society in which magic defines status. Authorities use spells to keep the masses in line and watch everyone through all-seeing scythe bowls. While the eccentric Prince Melyobar and his retinue sail in his movable dwelling to avoid Death, the Gath Tampoor Empire uses the Bhealfa citizenry as it has for twenty years as sword and sorcery fodder in its war with the Rintarah Empire, the previous conquerors and wasters of Bhealfa populace.
Reeth Caldason seeks magical relief from the curse he suffers from that turns him into a blood raging mass killer if not chained, but learns the wizard he seeks is dead. The wizard's apprentice Kutch Pirathon mentions the Covenant, which gives the beleaguered Reeth a sliver of hope. Another visitor Dulian Karr, paying respect to the deceased, wants to liberate Bhealfa from the two empires that rotate subjugation; he suggests that Kutch and Reeth team up as they seek the same requirement, a master mage. The epic adventure for freedom has begun.
In many ways THE COVENANT RISING is a typical epic fantasy, but is also much more. The story line contains the usual sword and sorcery elements throughout, but Stan Nicholls blends them into an intriguing societal arrangement sort of like India's caste society within a magically based Orwellian 1984. Reeth and Kutch are terrific protagonists with neither trusting the other though needing one another if they are to gain their wish. The freeing of incarcerated female military captain Serrah Ardacris, whose imprisonment adds to the feel of a real society, increases the unease of the "alliance" between this dynamic dual. Thought provoking, Mr. Nicholls furbishes a terrific opening tale in his Dreamtime trilogy.

Book Description
This is how Geneen Roth remembers her time as an emotional overeater and self-starver. After years of struggle, Roth finally broke free from the destructive cycle of bingeing and purging. In the two decades since her triumph, she has gone on to help tens of thousands of others do the same through her lectures, workshops, and retreats. Those she has met during this time have shared stories that are both heartrending and inspiring, which Roth has gathered for this unique book.
Twenty years after its original publication, Feeding the Hungry Heart continues to inspire women and men, helping them win the battle against a hunger that goes deeper than a need for food.

FEED THE HUNGRY HEART.......2007-09-13
I BOUGHT THIS BOOK FOR A RELATIVE WITH AN EATING DISORDER BUT I ENDED UP READING IT FIRST! IT HELPED ME TO UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT THESE DISORDERS. I CAN SEE THIS BOOK HELPING THE SUFFERING FEEL LIKE THEY AREN'T CRAZY OR ALONE, AND THAT THERE IS HOPE. IT OPENS THE DOOR TO RECOVERY....
no title.......2005-11-16
The best book I've yet read on compulsive eating. One line touched me to the core. Do I eat to mother myself because I never got any; to nurture myself? Maybe that's why I need a dog, someone who I feel loves me totally and completely as me, not as a daughter or a wife? But this book also showed some very sick people in regards to food, some very bad binges and sneak eating. My life and thought do tend to revolve around food - buying it, cooking it, eating it. The writing is excellent. Roth should really write a novel or something more demanding. She can write well. I do wonder if the writing of other women was not polished up by her.
All the sugar and 2x the caffeine, please. No teenager should live inside an ED........2005-08-18
Living with an eating-disordered father all my life, it's no surprise that I started sneaking and hoarding food up in my bedroom by the age of 6. He snuck his binge foods, too, existing on diet Coke, eggbeaters, fat-free cheese, and salads of entire heads of lettuce adorned with other fat free vegetables and topped with fat-free dressing to take to work-- where he'd eat a 2lb. bag of M&M's in one shift. When I became clinically bulimic at 12, he slowly ceased restocking the pantry and fridge. I was hospitalized on an eating disorders unit twice- first merely because of the bulimia. My mother, at least, was perfect happy about the 18 extra lbs I'd lost, no matter how dangerously they'd gone. The second time I was admitted to the same unit, I had been purging every last thing I ate, and spent all of my free time either trying to mimick the detailed exercise charts of "true-life anorexic memoirs" OR bingeing and purging my brains out.
Finally, 30lbs below what would shortly become an apparent healthy set weight point, people were getting concerned about my anorexic proclivities. I was to turn 14 years old there.
Brief break before instituationalization. They take no mind of my ED what so ever. I go overboard in the cafeteria. This, plus a lithium prescriptio, puts 42 lbs on me in 4.5 months. I hate myself. I stop eating the moment I am discharged and lose 10 lbs the first week. I do it by baking copiously, and never tasting my goods. I know I am good.
Other adolescent pursuits of self-destruction manage to whittle me back to a minimum expected weight of 140-145. I never go lower than that. I can stay up for days on LSD, consuming nothing but the occasional nitrous oxide balloon, and later-- I will live in my car and travel the country, *always* looking for a handout (and extras, to divert to other street kids). But as a teenager, the only slight possible dip occured when I started enjoying opiates recreationally. It was temporary. Most people get over the weak stomach caused by snorting or shooting dope. I never did, because I now had the perfect cover. No one even *imagined* I might be puking from anything but bulimia. No way. I had my cake and morphine and I could snort and eat and purge it, too.
But I spent a lot of time in the company of others at this time. I was using drugs, yes. But simply because I spent so much time there, I often ate there. And having read some of Geneen's books by then (this one preobably first- to see where the heck she was coming from) I conceded to order along with the guys (this would be the 3rd delivery that day) from the place that delivered all the wierd SUBs, like 12inch cheeseburger.
I would make a sandwich out of whitebread, mayo, and yellow American cheese food product.
I'd eat a piece of pizza.
Not yet understanding the true meaning of "crispy" AT ALL, I followed my bosses directions to cram a take-out container full of "crispy chicken" from the Chinese Buffet next door.
I shared the top layer of the new Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough icecream from B&J's with the other girl who haunted the apartment, and discovered the joys of "new" Sour Cream and Cheddar Potato Chips.
So thank you for that, Janeen.
It wasn't until I was 2,000 miles and -60 degrees fahrenheit from home, living out of my car with 3 others and a dog that I realized my last eating-disordered vice had slipped away. We were crashing with some nice folks in Colorado Springs, and I was getting some crackers out of the sleeve. I didn't have the faintest idea how many crackers I was retrieving, whether it was divisible by 3, 6, or what the chart on the side of the box said.
A New Way of Thinking.......2005-07-27
Geneen Roth has opened up a new path in my journey to recovery from compulsive eating. Her ideas and suggestions put my eating disorder in a different light. It is nothing to be so ashamed of that I continue my own self-sabotage. With work - getting rid of the old messages surrounding my compulsive eating - I will discover the me I was created to be.
no real substance .......2005-03-24
About the only thing I got from this author is that she suffered from compulsive eating. I agree that you must learn to love yourself, but this woman gives no concrete information on how to do that. I read most of her books about 3 years ago, and even went to one of her seminars. The only thing I learned is that she is rude in person, and the seminar was like one big infomercial pushing her other books. I saw a lot of others there who were struggling with compulsive eating, which was helpful, but we all left feeling like, "now what?". I finally found OA, and am experiencing real recovery. This book wasn't a complete waste of time, because it sent me into another direction to find a program which actually helps me.
Book Description

For more than 15 years, her bestselling books and workshops have helped thousands of former dieters stop struggling - and start living. Why do we eat too much? The Simple Art of Napkin Folding.......2007-01-26
Helpful book has many ideas for those who still like to set a nice table and actually use cloth napkins.
Great book.......2007-01-13
I like this book. It has a lot of cute folds, it is easy to follow and the book is laid out well. It even has a section on some folds for children. The only thing that could possibly make this book better would be if it was in color.
easy to follow.......2006-11-03
I bought this book after considering several others on line, and now I won't need to buy another. I wanted something that was easy to understand and follow to make the dinner table a little something special for my wife after she comes home from work. Having dinner ready was just not enough for me, and thought about the napkin presentation. This book has more than you will ever need, and each one is clearly drawn out and easy to understand. Money well worth spent.
Love it!.......2005-09-27
This book has easy to follow instructions and is very informative about the history of the napkin folds. My husband smiles when he sits down to eat. It's fun decorating the table now.
Somewhat palatable.......2003-06-20
Being a napkin enthusiast, naturally I'm quite an avid fan of Linda Hetzer, however, I find it immensely unnerving that she inexcusably has omitted several key napkin folding solutions. Apparently, she just wouldn't make the effort to list 100 Fancy Folds, just only 94 - how revolting.

Upside down and..........2006-11-28
At first sight, this looks to be a great book. Colorful photography. Terrific ideas. BUT--many of the pictures are taken from the wrong perspective: as if you were standing across the table from the folder. This means that if you want to follow the directions, you have to mentally reverse each photograph. For me, that was very hard to do.
The easiest and the best!.......2003-11-03
I have several napkin folding books but I think this book illustrate the best. I always have companies for dining in my house and a good napkin foldings really gives the final touch to the table. This book explains so clearly and made it so easy. Pictures are so clear and vivid. I love this book!

This book is so handy to someone inexperienced in table setting. I remembered days when my grandmother taught me about starching and folding the napkins to utmost perfection. But the ideas given in this book was so beautifully captured in photographs, and the end results are liken to an experienced table setter! It was a perfect gift for me. My grandmother is even more proud of me in setting up the table for special family occasions now.
