It's evident from the opening lines of Jane and the Wandering Eye that author Stephanie Barron knows both her Regency-period England and her Jane Austen. In this novel, the famous author takes center stage and finds herself embroiled in nefarious doings--in this case, the murder of a theater manager. As in the series' other books, Jane herself tells the story through a series of journal entries, and it is in her heroine's voice that Barron's genius comes to light: the same sharp eye for detail and ironic understanding of human character that informed Miss Austen's novels are hard at work in this fictional account of her sideline occupation as a sleuth. Though the mystery at the heart of Jane and the Wandering Eye is hardly a nail-biter, the wonderful mix of fictional and historical characters--all rendered up with Austenian wit--that inhabit this murderous comedy of manners are what will keep readers going to the very last page--and coming back for more.

Book Description

As Christmas of 1804 approaches, Jane Austen finds herself "insupportably bored with Bath, and the littleness of a town." It is with relief that she accepts a peculiar commission from her Gentleman Rogue, Lord Harold Trowbridge—to shadow his niece, Lady Desdemona, who has fled to Bath to avoid the attentions of the unsavoury Earl of Swithin.

But Jane's idle diversion turns deadly when a man is discovered stabbed to death in the Theatre Royal. Adding to the mystery is an unusual object found on the victim's body—a pendant that contains a portrait of an eye! As Jane's fascination with scandal leads her deeper into the investigation, it becomes clear that she will not uncover the truth without some dangerous playacting of her own....

5 out of 5 stars Better as they go.......2004-09-19

'Jane and the Wandering Eye' is the third novel in Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen as detective series; and she merely improves each time upon an ingenious and highly likely concept, as our favorite author plays sleuth to high-profile murders and crimes. Barron has realistically recreated Austen's time period, playing the editor to Jane's "found" diaries that record these events, and peppering her narrative with footnotes that inform the reader about Austen's day.

With the third book of the series, Barron has improved upon her style. At times it almost seems a bit of a stretch to capture the language used in Austen's day, but Barron is comfortable in Jane's mindset. She does the author justice in thought and deed - one can very easily imagine Jane adventuring to discover the twists and turns of the mysteries that fill Barron's pages. And if there is a slight resemblance to some of Austen's published novels, well, we know when the idea/observation struck her.

The third book introduces us to a murder mystery, filled with numerous twists and turns. Once again we find Jane in the companionship of Lord Harold Trowbridge, as they try to solve a mystery that was committed at his mother's house and that throws suspicion on his family, as well as on various suitors who would claim his niece's hand in marriage. Together, Lord Harold and Jane uncover the murderer while the law remains impotent to do so. I very much look forward to whatever mischief she may set her sights upon in book four.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Information About Theatre.......2004-07-09

This book was just as slow and ponderous as the first too, but had alot of interesting information about Regency era theatre. Still not very witty, either.

5 out of 5 stars Here's a little secret about these books.......2004-01-25

They're not REALLY written by Jane Austen. If you want to read a book by Jane Austen, buy "Emma" or "Persuasion." If you want to read one written by an Austen scholar and admirer, try these. They're really interesting and quite charming. I think it's brilliant that Barron has invested her creativity in this tribute to her favorite writer. Maybe some Austenites are just too die-hard to appreciate the concept. Personally, I find these novels well designed and very entertaining. Wish I could write as well as this author does.

4 out of 5 stars An Intriguing Concept.......2002-07-30

This is the third of a series of not-at-all-unpleasant mysteries from Stephanie Barron, written with the conceipt that they are actually long-lost journals from the pen of Jane Austen, found in a distant American relative's belongings, and detailing Jane's family, friends, society and the mysterious events in which she keeps finding herself embroiled...In this volume, a man is murdered during a masquerade party during a Christmastide in fashionable Bath, and whispers a name as he expires--but how many women happened to be named "Maria" during Austen's time?

These novels are like brief vacations to a vanished never-land of Regency England...The period detailing seems authentic; the language is Austen-like, as far as that can go, and there are pseudo-scholarly footnotes to explain unfamiliar terms and concepts. Well worth reading!

4 out of 5 stars an enjoyable addition to the series.......2002-06-21

I enjoy these Jane Austen-as-sleuth novels. Author Stephanie Barron is a fine writer who emulates Austen's elegant prose style with success. This third installment of the series takes place in 1804 Bath, where Jane's family has moved, in part to accommodate father George's declining health, and Jane dislikes intensely living in a place of such "dissipation". A murder has occurred during a fancy dress party Jane attends, and she is drawn into the mystery by her old friend, Lord Harold Trowbridge.

I had some minor quibbles with the book -- Austen's renowned wit is missing, too many characters (in costumes, no less!) and relationships make the plot confusing -- but in general I enjoyed this book very much, and appreciate the opportunity to spend time with our beloved Jane as the author deftly weaves historical and biographical facts into her story.

Personally I enjoy the footnotes, which are infrequent, informative and not at all intrusive.

4 out of 5 stars Plenty in this Cup.......2004-01-23

"The Cup of Morning Shadows" continues the story set up in "The Sword of Maiden's Tears." At the end of "Tears," Ruth Marlowe, student librarian and the soulmate of Elf Rohannon Melior, has sent Melior back to his own realm alone. "Shadows" picks up her story some time later, when Ruth has graduated and gotten a job in an upstate New York library. This particular library has only one claim to fame; every so often, a member of the staff disappears from the face of the Earth.

And that's what happens to Ruth, too, when she goes to answer an alarm on a holiday. She and her boss, Nicholas Brightlaw, end up being transported to Melior's realm, Chandrakar -- but Melior didn't call them, and he knows nothing about them being there. Which means both Ruth and Nic are in deadly peril from the start in a strange land; the only advantage they have is that, perhaps due to the translation, they understand and can speak the local language.

Ruth meets up with Fox, formerly known as Philip LeStrange -- he, too, had been transported unwittingly to Chandrakar a few years earlier than Ruth from the same library. Fox is embittered, as humans are treated lower than dirt by most.

Then, along the way, Ruth meets up with Jauressande, an Elf woman who's related to Melior. But Jauressande can barely stand the sight of Ruth (she views Ruth's love for Melior as an abomination) and absolutely hates Fox, as Fox has raised the humans in the countryside to rebel against their Elven overlords.

The Cup of Morning Shadows is the object Jauressande must have at the Elven conclave, but it's been stolen, and she's in trouble. She grudgingly agrees, after Nic intercedes (she respects him from the start despite him being human), to place Ruth and Fox under her protection, and they all go off to search for it, having many adventures along the way.

Basically, where the first book, "Sword of Maiden's Tears," was a character study in a humorous urban fantasy setting, "Cup of Morning Shadows" is an adventure story. The humor is present, but somewhat muted, and most of what Ruth and Nic find out isn't particularly likable. And the story does end on a major cliffhanger (which seems to happen in most of Ms. Edghill's books). ;)

Two points to consider. One, if you're looking for the same sort of plot-mixture as the first book, you won't find it here. The horror element is absent or, better yet, transmuted -- the horror in "Cup" is that the Elves have the upper hand and don't want to give it up. Melior is an extreme liberal in this society, in that he has fallen in love and wishes to marry a human woman -- most Elves do not believe humans are worth more than the mud under their boots (thus the epithet "mud-born," although the formal name of humanity in Chandrakar is "the Children of Earth"). Second, this book starts much slower than the previous book, as Ms. Edghill must build an entirely new landscape from scratch while continuing to keep her two major characters (Ruth and Melior) from book one in the dark about most events. This isn't a flaw at all, but it is a major change from the previous book (where the milieu was of contemporary Earth, so the book could start faster as the reader has more cultural referents).

I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventurous urban fantasy. Four stars, recommended.

And if you like this book, you'll almost certainly enjoy the current Mercedes Lackey-Rosemary Edghill collaborations "Mad Maudlin," "Spirits White as Lightning," and "Beyond World's End." (Along with anything else Ms. Edghill has ever written.

4 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2002-09-24

Had a lot of fun with this one. A very light, fast read, especially fun for SCAdians or people who like the references to other stories. I also like the fact that many of the characters are adults - why should teenagers get to have *ALL* the fun?! ;) The characters can be a bit one-sided, but it would be hard to elaborate too much on them, given the pace of the book, without boggling the story-line down. I like the humorous elements, too.

4 out of 5 stars Liked This One Better Than The First One.......2001-12-12

This book continues the story of Ruth Marlowe and Rohannan Melior begun in "The Sword of Maiden's Tears", and expands it nicely. Ruth finds a portal into Melior's world and enters it, searching for the missing part of her soul which is magically bound into the Sword of Maiden's Tears, and also, the love of her life, Melior.

This time the setting is in Melior's world, and we learn that all is not sweetness and light there. New characters are introduced and are better developed than those in the first book. Familiar characters from the first book are expanded. The whole setting seems to have been better thought out, or else I just found it more interesting than the rather claustrophobic Columbia University setting in the first book.

A warning though: if you buy this book, search out and buy the third in the series, "The Cloak of Night and Daggers", if you want to know what happens, because this book has a cliffhanger ending

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2001-06-05

I really, really loved this book. I've read the first and third books as well, and love how she really describes everything. You really get to love/hate certain characters, unlike in some other books. A must-buy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book to Read and Reread.......2000-06-10

I loved it. I agree that it definitely needs more books to "finish" all the stories that are told in it. A little depressing at times, especially the elves-wouldn't you just love to slap them-but Ruth more than makes up for it.

      2 out of 5 stars OK.......2005-04-14

I got this book with great anticipation, having read a recommendation of it in a parenting magazine; but it did not quite meet my expectations. Frankel is very up front with his approach, emphasizing the importance of children's one-on-one play dates as a foundation for friendships. While he makes some good points, I think his approach is somewhat narrow and simplistic. There are many ways to make friends and many kinds of friendships to have; play dates are not the be-all and end-all of friendship.

I also found some of Frankel's sample dialogues (e.g. how parent can tell child to play well) somewhat condescending; I think most parents can figure out for themselves what words to use when encouraging their child. And some of Frankel's "rules" seem odd to me: e.g. he says that if girls are playing with a toy and another girl approaches, she needs to ask the girl who owns the toy if it's ok if she plays with them -- and this supposedly does not apply to boys. Frankel provides no evidence for this alleged difference; he simply states it as fact.

I was hoping this book would have more information about kids' friendships in general and about differences between children at various ages etc. It's interesting as a simple how-to manual but not particularly informative beyond that.

This great book provides parents with a wealth of helful information that will make you feel more confident about the guidance you give to your kids about having friends and being friends. It will help parents help their kids understand and improve social relationships. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find and Hard to Keep.......2003-07-28

"Friendship is a mutual relationship formed with affection and commitment between people who consider themselves equals."

Life changes fast. Your friends are changing and you are changing and at times friends will go off in different directions. Lately someone told me a story about a friend who was like an angel to them and only appeared in their life when they needed her. She also disappeared for years at a time without telling them why.

The problem with finding friends is just that: "finding them." While you would think it was the easiest thing in the world to make friends, it really is difficult to find those amazing " once-in-a-lifetime" great pals who you can talk to about anything. Losing those people is like loosing half your soul.

Perhaps the best solution is to help your children start choosing good friends early in life. This is a book about making and keeping friends.

      The Contents Include:

      Finding Friends
      Making Friends
      Keeping Friends
Dealing with Teasing, bullying and Meanness
Helping Your Child Stay out of Trouble

Fred Frankel is a psychologist and leading expert on children?s social skills. He is the director of the UCLA Parent Training & Children's Social Skills Program. This is where he teaches pediatricians, psychologists, social workers and child psychiatrists.

He has information in this book, I had not really considered. While it might be logical, they do say that children who did not have a best friend as a child grow up to be lonely young adults. They found that friends teach us about social grace and how to solve disagreements, not to mention supporting each other through stressful times.

One of the most ingenious ideas is to develop interests that attract friends. My parents used to have birthday parties for us and bake really good cupcakes. That was sure to attract friends, however, I soon learned that often kids would be my friend just so they could have some of my lunch. My dad made the best lunches for me to take to school. This book shows you how to try to find out what your child is really interested in and encourage them in that direction.

There is also a section on how to discourage bad choices.

The section on "having friends stolen" brought back some of my own childhood memories. Losing a close friend brought back some memories from my adult life. You know when a friendship is going to end. It is just painful to see it happening. Chapter 16 shows the early, late and point of no return stages. It is good to know that grieving is ok.

One of the problems I dealt with repeatedly as a child was "moving away." Eventually I just became scared of making new friends because I knew in a few month I'd be moving again and it became painful for me to say goodbye. I maintained shallow friendships for most of my life, however some of my childhood friendships turned into long-term friendships through writing letters. The author explains how you can make this process easier for a child. Writing letters did work for me in some cases, although it is impossible to keep track of all your childhood pals.

This book can help you deal with:

      Bullies
Kids that Tease your child obsessively
Calls from school telling you your child has been in a fight
A child who has ADD/ADHD or Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
A child who says they are too busy to make friends

This book has a nice index and additional information about the selections offered by the publisher.

I liked this book very much. When my 8 year old encountered various situations at school I wasn't sure what to tell him to do. This book addresses real problems and gives real answers. It tells you how to help you child and what to say to them, without solving the problem FOR them. I thought it was excellent.

James Beard was one of those wonderful chefs who could make even the most humble foods fit for kings. My original paperback is so dog-eared, with so many notes scribbled in the margins about the scrumptious Beard bread recipes I've tried out, I had no choice but to buy another, larger format book. Yay! Even more space for notes and observations. Beard's creations live on. If you love bread, you'll love this book and so will the willing recipients of the goodness that comes from Beard, through your kitchen, to them.

I have been baking bread, or attempting to, for thirty years. I still need this book. I seem to always give them away, so when I want the recipe for the apricot bread, or the girlfriend getter walnut-onion; I must call an ex or buy another. I can stand on my own, from experience, on the yeast breads for the most part. But the quick breads in this book stand out in my memory. That is what I need this book for. When I tell people that I bake bread, they ask me "do you have a bread machine?", I reply" I am a bread machine!".

4 out of 5 stars Good in 1973 - Eclipsed by Modern Methods.......2006-06-14

The late James Beard (1903-1985) - began a high profile career in the culinary community by writing his first major cookbook in 1940, followed by Cook It Outdoors, published in 1942.

With such titles as The Complete Book of Barbecue & Rotisserie Cooking, Fish Cookery, Treasury of Outdoor Cooking, and Casserole Cookbook, James Beard kept his focus on simple recipes with what he called honest ingredients that reflected his American heritage.

Written in 1973, Beard on Bread was Beard's best-selling book in his lifetime. It demonstrates a classic example of Beard's philosophy for simplicity; reflecting the ingredients, and tastes popular at that juncture of our culinary history.

It brought back memories to see my maiden name in my old 1973 copy. Beard on Bread and the Sunset book on bread were our best published instruction during that bread-making revival 35-years ago when bakers relied on packaged yeast as their prevailing leavening agent.

Already a serious cook at the time, Beard on Bread gave me the confidence and skill to bake the bread I needed to bake to keep food on my table as a young struggling artist with my first art gallery opening. The unintended consequence was a waiting list to purchase not my paintings, but my bread!

The recipes may lack the sophistication, taste preferences, and comprehensive instruction demanded by much of today's cooks. Sassafras, for instance still boasts that Beard endorsed their baking products, but one must conclude that the kitchen accessories of 35 years ago were quite different from today's more sophisticated equipment.

Beard was not fond of homemade sourdough and his book's content reflects this predilection. He stated homemade natural leavening agents are "very unreliable" which is not helpful for today's baker aspiring to artisan baking.

His Finnish Flat bread recipe using dry commercial yeast for leaven, attempts to embroider the taste of an authentic European sour rye sponge by way of stale beer and buttermilk.

I am neither a fan of Peter Reinhart's taste in bread recipes, nor his style of writing. Reinhart, still praises Beard on one of my least cherished recipes, Anadama bread. The recipe reflects the preferences in many of Reinhart's recipes for dense, sweet bread recipes with molasses, sugar, cornmeal, butter, packaged yeast and a tablespoon of salt. Reinhart, like James Beard, are attracted to sweet breads, the use of much sugar, fat, and salt in their bread percentages.

For today's baker, I recommend Nancy Silverton's, Breads from the La Brea Bakery : Recipes for the Connoisseur (Hardcover). Or, Bo Friberg's The Professional Pastry Chef: Fundamentals of Baking and Pastry, 4th Edition, or, The Village Baker: Classic Regional Breads from Europe and America by Joe Ortiz.

For those who are really hooked, I recommend, The Bread Builders: Hearth Loaves and Masonry Ovens by Daniel Wing, Alan Scott.

4 out of 5 stars Great Variety for the casual baker for small cost. Nice Read.......2005-02-25

`Beard on Bread' is one volume of a series on specific culinary topics by leading American culinary writer, James Beard. While fellow experts who knew him such as James Villas attribute Beard with an encyclopedic knowledge of food, he was not particularly an expert on bread. So, what we get in this book is an excellent selection of recipes covering a wide range of uses and techniques, but without the depth of understanding about breadbaking and its techniques which you get in books from Peter Reinhart, Nancy Silverton, or Rose Levy Beranbaum. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Cookbooks full of relatively simple recipes from a very reliable source for a small list price are always valuable to a wide audience. And, if you are reading this review, the chances are good that this book is more appropriate to your needs than one of the bread books from those leading lights I cited above.

Dedications of books are generally relatively uninteresting, as they are most commonly made to close family members who had a lot to do with the author's surviving the experience of writing the book, but little to do with inspiration on the content of the book. This book's dedication is revealing, in that it is to the great English culinary writer, Elizabeth David, who, in addition to her famous books on the cuisine of France, Italy, and the Mediterranean, was the proud author of a superb book on English breads and baking. I am in the middle of reading that book now, and I am genuinely surprised that the book is not cited more than it is by other authors. It is a large book with really substantial sections on both the technology of bread baking and the history of bread baking in England. If you are familiar with David's book, Beard's book is, in comparison, a minor work whose survival in print rests largely on the reputation of the author and the fact that it does give us lots of good recipes at a low cost.

Beard is well known for having created something of a little book writing shop staffed by disciples who wrote most of the actual text attributed to Beard. The most prominent of these are Barbara Kafka and Marian Cunningham, both of whom are easily charter members in an American cookbook hall of fame for their own work. And, if they are not, they should be. But this book, I suspect, has just a little more of James Beard in it than most published under his name. Biographies of Beard often cite how he constantly experimented with bread recipes, even though this was not his speciality. Oddly enough, if he can be said to have any speciality more specific than American Cuisine, it is probably grilling and outdoors cooking.

The best thing about this book aside from the pedigree of its author is its range of subjects. Without touching on artisinal baking, Beard manages to touch just about everything else the world calls bread. The principle subjects are:

Basic Yeast Bread and other White-Flour Breads
        Whole Wheat Breads
        Sweetened Breads and Coffee Cakes
        Egg Breads
        Batter Breads
        Baking Powder and Soda Breads
        Rolls
        Flat Breads
        Filled Breads
        Fried Cakes
        Griddle Breads

The fact that this book was first written in 1973, just before the explosion in food interest in the United States means that much of what is in the book has just a touch of the retro about it. I am happy to find that `instant' yeast had just become available before this book was written and Beard took this opportunity to comment on it. I am especially happy to discover that while Beard recognized that it might be faster than the more familiar `active dry' yeast, he believes its results were simply not as flavorful as the older dried yeast.

My favorite example of a retro recipe is the pancake recipe in the last chapter that leavens these goodies with yeast rather than with buttermilk and baking soda or baking powder. Thus, Beard's Yeast Griddle Cakes no longer qualify as quick breads, since it is advised that the starter be mixed and let to sit overnight. If one wonders why in the world one would want to make pancakes with yeast, you have to remember that yeast was available before commercially prepared baking powder, and, buttermilk or vinegar may not have been as commonly available as the yeast, since yeast was such a good leavener for lots of breads for which chemical leaveners did not work.

To those for whom this is important, this is a very homey book. Lots of recipes are borrowed from friends and acquaintances, only a few, like Jane Grigson, are recognizable culinary writers. Note that many traditional breads such as brioche are not made by a traditional recipe. Virtually every brioche recipe I have ever seen, even in books on `easy cooking' ask for an 8-hour rise, preferable longer, overnight. Beard's recipe does not do this. His brioche recipe can be done in about the time it takes to make a classic white bread loaf. Thus, this is not the book for someone interested in professional bread baking or even an amateur approximation of classic professional recipes. This is a book which is fun to read and a great source of inspiration when you just happen to want to try some old school bread making.

My only caveat is that unlike books from the experts listed above, there is little information to help figure out what may have gone wrong if the recipe does not come out as expected. And, bread baking simply does require just a bit more skill than you average savory dish.

4 out of 5 stars basic, easy to follow and informative.......2004-11-02

I really like this book; it gives basic details about bread as well as a good selection of different breads. I have worn out the pages on fruit breads - apricot & brandy are one of our favorites. The book flops open to banana breads because I have used it so many times. It is not exhaustive, but variations are suggested. This is a nice friendly starter for baking breads with out a bread machine (never mentioned)of all kinds. It is also one you will keep coming back to time and time again.

                  3 out of 5 stars somewhat surprising.......2006-09-09

The first surprise with this book was that it's NOT by James Beard, which is why I originally bought it. Nor is he mentioned anywhere in the book. I have no idea why it is advertised like that. James Beard is not a co-author, contributor or anywhere else mentioned. It's a collection of bread recipes from different culinary teachers/writers, and considering it's a 70s, somewhat outdated book that originally cost $ 1.99, and would probably be 50 cent in a used book store I was somewhat disappointed.
I kept it anyway, because there are a variety of (second surprise!) real interesting and fresh ideas for making bread. I tried two of them (pear and hazelnut bread and saffron tea bread) and they turned out very well. It also contains some general notions about breadmaking, a recipe for making sourdough starter and some information about equipment. All in all not too bad, just don't expect James Beard.
