Book Description
Susan Meissner explores what God does in the deep places of the human spirit in this story about an acclaimed mystery writer Luke Foxbourne, who lives a happy life in a century–old manor house in Connecticut. But when his father, Jack, has a stroke, Luke returns to his hometown of Halcyon, Iowa, where he reluctantly takes the reins of his father’s newspaper for an undetermined amount of time.
Memories of Norah—the neighbor girl who was his first kiss—cause Luke to reflect as he spends night after night alone in his childhood home. Soon he feels an uncontrollable urge to start writing a different story altogether. Norah’s story. And his own.

Well-crafted story.......2006-10-10
Reviewed by Kim Peterson for Reader Views (9/06)
Mystery Writer of the Year Luke Foxbourne disregards his latest book deadline and returns home when his father suffers a stroke. Back in his hometown he divides his time between visiting his father in the hospital, helping his mother, and assuming his father's duties running the family-owned newspaper.
At his childhood home, the empty green house next door reminds him of unpleasant memories. As thoughts of his neighbors resurface, he finally devotes time to thinking through the past that he never wanted to revisit.
Cranky old Mrs. Janvik had lived next door and few things ever went well for her or her family. When her grandchildren came to live with her, Luke and his brother befriended them. But Norah and her troubled younger brother weren't like Luke's family. Norah's parents either spent time in jail or had too much wild fun to retain custody of the children all the time. The kids lived with their grandmother on and off and lacked the stability and security that Luke took for granted.
Luke wondered if God had cursed his neighbors. How could so many things go wrong for them otherwise? Luke's family tried to show them kindness and the love of God. Luke, in his youthful idealism, had promised to protect Norah, but was unable to do so. He knew he let her down and avoided dealing with the matter for years.
Now, he launches a new writing project--a memoir in which he explores the mystery and the unanswered questions that he has avoided for so long. Why did God allow misfortune to plague the Janviks until they could no longer cope with the misery? Did Norah find happiness? Did she reconcile with God? Did good prevail in her life?
With his wife's encouragement, Luke seeks out Norah to learn the outcome of her story. Luke doesn't find all the answers to his questions, but he does discover forgiveness and peace.
Meissner writes about deep spiritual questions in a fresh and surprising style. "In All Deep Places" explores the God-shaped longing that exists within humans--that same hunger alluded to throughout literature and poems such as Francis Thompson's "The Hound of Heaven." Without resorting to preaching or trite answers, Meissner grapples with the age-old questions about bad things happening to good people.
Although the struggles in this coming-of-age novel saddened me at times, I enjoyed the well-crafted story. When immersed in life's deep places, we seek assurance that we will survive, maybe even triumph. "In All Deep Places" offers hope for emotional healing and hope for a promising future.
Deeply Beautiful.......2006-10-07
Some go for quick escapist fiction, along the lines of fast food gulped en route to the next stop. I prefer to ponder the words, like a county fair judge might determine the subtleties of the perfect apple pie.
Susan Meissner serves up wonderful word pictures like, "He scampered off, returning a moment later with a faded rag frozen by time and neglect into a stiff terry-cloth fossil," in her new novel, In All Deep Places.
Luke Foxbourne, carries a burden that comes to a boil through a series of events. The reader is taken to the segment of time that branded his life, and continues to haunt him. Ms. Meissner gives us insight into her protagonist's confusion and sorrow with, "'I don't understand You," Luke whispered aloud, but he was afraid to whisper anything else. He was afraid a cosmic hand would reach down out of heaven, pluck him from the tree house, and fling him to the frozen ground."
My eye has been trained to seek flaws in writing. I suppose a lot like the judge who notices a smidge too much salt, or the wrong kind of apple. It has become, for me, a sign of good fiction, when I get lost in the story and respond to the lives of the characters.
I read Ms. Meissner's novel in three sessions - devouring what I could fit into the very busy holidays. Her characters, her writing lingered. I'd find myself clinging to a neatly turned phrase or trying to squeeze the had-to-do's into smaller time bits so I could sneak a look at what might happen next.
In my opinion, Ms. Meissner writes Christian Fiction the way it should be written, with threads and hints and God webs interwoven into not very rosy pictures of broken lives. In All Deep Places contains tinges of hope, an aroma of life, a slight glow of light, and a lingering trace of poignancy. And that is the stuff of life, the moments when we are forced to think, to face our smallness and the immensity of God.
This is the second of Ms. Meissner's books I've had the pleasure of reading. I intend to continue consuming her books, going back and picking up the two I've missed, and eagerly awaiting the next one.
If you only read books with talking animals or those that end with the words "happily ever after" you might not share my opinion.
If you prefer your fiction to be a little more like real life with spots of word weaving magic, I think you'll like In All Deep Places.
Deep, different, thought provokingly good.......2006-08-26
In All Deep Places is a poignant, heart-wrenching story of a gallant boy and a hapless girl, both driven by the unrealistic expectations of their youthful friendship. The title is apt, and Meissner has drawn deep from a well of emotion. Though much of the book deals with tragic events, it's not dark, but it is haunting--a story that will remain in your heart. A book you can't read and remain the same.
Wonderful.......2006-05-12
I loved this book! I couldn't put it down.
Having said that, I would also like to say, that this is not my normal style of books. But this one was so well crafted, so well plotted, the characters so interesting that I found it impossible to not read "just a little more". I laughed and I cried all my mascara off.
Susan is a great story teller. The story ceases to be words and you are suddenly there with the characters, smelling what they smell, hearing what they hear. . .I now look forward to reading her other books.
If you like Women's fiction or just a good story? I recommend In All Deep Places.
A heart-stirring story.......2006-03-22
Wow! Susan Meissner is not only a topnotch writer, she is a woman with a heart for God and a depth of spiritual understanding that few can rival. She writes in a way that enables readers to become the main characters, and she accomplishes this because she digs deep enough to find the commonality in all of us, that longing for something more, something better, something...something that was lost in the Garden and can never be regained in this world. In All Deep Places speaks to us of that longing and reminds us that we are nothing more than homesick pilgrims. This is a book that births discontent with our lives, regardless of circumstances, and points us in the only direction that can ever dispel that discontentment. Thank you, Susan, for a story that woos our hearts in the telling....
Book Description
Here is the book that Tolkien fans have needed for half a century--a detailed, book-length chronology of J. R. R. Tolkien's complex tale. Whether you are a serious Tolkien fan or simply someone who enjoys reading the story over and over again, this is the book for you. It's the first totally new reference for The Lord of the Rings since the 1970s.
Beginning over 1400 years before the major events in Tolkien's epic, it describes, year-by-year, the amazing and imaginative background history that Tolkien created for his masterpiece. Then for the main narrative, it becomes a day-by-day reference, describing what each character does on that day and all the places where those events are described in Tolkien's writings. You can find out, for instance, what Merry and Pippin are doing as Sam perpares rabbit stew on the morning of March 7.
Probe deeper into Tolkien. See why someone as serious as Gandalf was interested in fun-loving Hobbits. Discover an exciting new plot, based on Tolkien's notes, that begins when Aragorn captures Gollum. Follow along as the Black Riders and Gandalf race for the Shire. Decide for yourself whether Sauron and the Ring have any ties to Hitler and Stalin. Explore what Tolkien believed about nature and technology.
A few facts illustrate how helpful this chronology is. Most of narrative is a deliberately confusing sea of next days and third days that leave readers as confused as the tale's main characters. The middle 60 percent of The Lord of the Rings gives the current date only once. In the narrative as a whole, the date is given only 23 times, or once for every 43 pages, and most of those come when the plot is moving slowly. That's why those who want to dig deeper and understand better what Tolkien was saying will find this book a must-have.

Excellent Resource.......2006-12-10
Perry has done a wonderful job in untangling the very intricate tale woven by J.R.R. Tolkien. Of particular help are the copious margin notes which reference exactly where Perry is drawing the information contained within that section of his book. The commentary made by the author is a welcomed pause for reflection on the events that are taking place and keep the book from being a mere listing of dates and events. I teach a course on J.R.R. Tolkien and have found Untangling Tolkien a valuable resource, since it covers the entire history of Middle-earth: what comes before The Hobbit and what takes place after The Lord of The Rings. Bravo Mr. Perry, I look forward to reading your other books.
Knits up the ravels.......2004-10-31
An amazing accomplishment by a dedicated Tolkien fan.
That is how I'd sum up the book Untanging Tolkien. Michael Perry has first unraveled all Tolkien's "dates" -- which can be extrapolated from phases of the moon -- and then knit them together again in a cohesive outline, presented in much greater detail than Tolkien's own timeline (found buried in Appendix A of LOTR). By incorporating information from other Tolkien writings, the author of Untangling Tolkien collates additional facts about all the characters and the circumstances surrounding the War of the Ring, folding them all into this detailed chronology. He includes material that sheds light on possible parallels between Tolkien's work and events that were contemporary, and he provides original commentary that suggests some additional motivations for Tolkien's characters. Sidebars offer references to every source for the information presented and for each conclusion the author has drawn.
I found the format, with quick-reference bulleted lists and clearly delineated sections and subheadings, well-organized and easy to use.
NOTE: I read the third printing that was published in May 2004. Apparently the author has corrected many of the errors that David Bratman objected to (below). You won't find a better overview or a more throrough treatment of time and dates in LOTR than Perry provides in this book.
A Radiograph of LotR........2003-12-27
This book is layed out as a chronological record of the events covered by Tolkein's masterpiece with prefaces that explain the calender system created by Tolkein and its conversion to our more mundane (and possibly inferior) system. The type is clear, and margin citations clear and present for every entry. It's primary utility, at which it succeeds admirably, is as a kind of radiograph of Tolkein's work that reveals its astonishing complexity more clearly and allows one to admire, and more importantly, explore the book itself more quickly, easily, and deeply.
The book also contains copious notes inline with the chronology. These vary from informative to tangential, but at worst do not detract from the book's primary function. Mr. Perry is perhaps foremost as Lewis scholar, and so C.S. Lewis, a close acquaintance and friend of Tolkein, makes a number of appearances. Also making appearances in the notes are William Shakespeare and Winston Churchill.
All in all, a unique book which will save anyone who wants to do an in depth study of LotR a lot of time.
Splendid Tolkien Reference Work.......2003-12-21
Superb, exhaustive chronology of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga. Perry does a superior job in untangling a number of thorny chronological issues in Tolkien's narrative, and he employs some fine literary detective work in reconstructing what events are happening across Middle Earth on any given date. Especially admirable is his reconstruction of how much moonlight there was during each day of Frodo and Sam's journey into Mordor.
In addition to chronology, Perry supplies a lot of background information about Tolkien's themes and sources, as well as biographical tidbits about Tolkien. For example, there are fascinating discussions of Tolkien's views of technology, freedom, and totalitarianism. Perry also discusses Tolkien's stance toward the misuse of Germanic myths by the Nazis.
This is a great resource for Tolkien-lovers everywhere.
a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia.......2003-12-21
A year-by-year, later day-by-day, chronicle of the war against Sauron from the founding of the Shire to the glorious conclusion seems at the outset like a good idea. Perry calls LOTR's Appendix B, the Tale of Years, "far from complete" but it covers the whole period: what he means is that it's not detailed enough for him. Appendix B won't tell you which day Sam cooked coney for Frodo; Perry will.
But alas, the book does not stop there. The entries are written as bullet lists like a PowerPoint presentation, and many add pointless little flowcharts such as two-generation family trees. They reduce Tolkien's magnificently complex subcreation into a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia. And each yearly or daily entry comes with its commentary, whether directly relevant, side points, broader considerations, or dogmatic essays in applicability. The unrelieved banality and inappropriateness of these must be read to be believed; as also the author's clumsy, grammatically inept style, and his smug superiority to the characters. (He frequently criticizes the good guys' "blunders," all of them more complex than he implies.)
There's actually some good chronological analysis and speculation hiding in here. But how can someone who knows his Tolkien that well say that the wizards were Valar, or that Rohan gave Isengard to Saruman (it wasn't theirs to give, and Saruman was made its warden, not a freeholder), that Boromir and Faramir had a sibling rivalry (Tolkien specifically says not), or suggest that Galadriel should have sent daily eagles to check up on the Fellowship?
These are not isolated examples: the bloopers and misconceived ideas go on and on. The whole book is like that: it has the soul of a PowerPoint presentation. I can't recommend it on any terms.

"The Forbidden Grove".......2004-01-17
If you like magic, battles, and mysteries you will love this book. The characters are cool, and the locations are neat. For example, the character's names (such as Treestump, Skywise, Cutter, Rayek, and Winowill) are interesting. The artwork is great because of the shading and the dimensional work. When warriers are fighting and strange things are happening the characters say things like "I'LL CUT OUT YOUR GUTS AND ROAST 'EM IN THE FIRE PIT!" and the trolls say "BY GRAYMUG'S BLACKENED BONES!" and the humans say "YOU'RE BOUND FOR NOWHERE BUT THE DOOM PIT!". So as you can see ELFQUEST "The Forbidden Grove" is a super cool book!
Brothers.......2003-04-04
True to their relationship in Fire and Flight, Cutter and Skywise prove to readers that they are indeed "brothers in all but blood", as they travel the world of two moons in search of other elves, so that all the children of the High Ones may be reunited. They meet some of the most Enchanting dangers along the way, that perhaps any work of fantasy may boast, and the artwork By Wendy remains SUPERB as ever. You cannot help but be touched by the relationships in this and the other seven original full color elfquest graphic novels by Wendy and Richard Pini.
Elfquest: "Journey To Sorrows End" (paperback).......2000-02-29
Beautifully crafted! The greatest story ever told comes to paperback! Wendy and Richard Pini bring the legend of Elfquest to paperback along with all the details they had to leave out of the illustrated series. Discover the adventure for the first time, or embark on it all over again through written word.
Hauntingly beautiful ....the amazing saga continues!.......1999-07-12
The second book in the elfquest saga following Fire and Flight. This is simply the best in fantasy writing!
Buy this book!.......1999-02-08
I have read all the original eight graphic novels and I must say this one is my favorite! Cutter and Skywise are really funny, and what can I say, who DOESN'T love petalwing? Plus this novel is the perfect transition between Sorrow's End and Blue Mountain. The artwork is superb and the storyline is great too.

Homeopathic Medicine at Home.......2007-08-27
This book is an excellent beginners First Aid book - FIRST AID being the key phrase, it will not cover deeper constitutional problems such as warts, asthma, eczema etc because these are chronic not first aid situations and need to be addressed by a professional.
The table layouts are especially helpful as quick reference and have been commented on by those I teach Homeopathic First Aid too. The Materia Medica section at the back is also well written and easy to read in a hurry.
Dr Panos and Dr Heimlich's book still rates very highly on my first homeopathy book suggestion list.
Great Place to Start!.......2007-06-03
Dr. Panos (who was my grandmother and is now sadly deceased) wrote a wonderful book, and reading it has helped me get "into" the remedies so that I can better understand Homeopathy instead of just assuming I know it. It's a shame she isn't around to write more. Read the book, pass it on, help others to help themselves. She would be so pleased!
HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE AT HOME.......2007-01-21
THIS BOOK IS A BIG WASTE OF YOUR MONEY! A TOTAL WASTE OF YOUR MONEY! THEY DIDN'T HAVE A REMEDY FOR EVEN PLANTAR WARTS! HERE'S ONE FOR YOU! TRY PUTTING CASTOR OIL ON A COTTON SWAB, PUT IT ON THE WART, APPLY BANDAID, DO THIS FOR SIX WEEKS. THE WART WILL TURN BLACK AND FALL OUT. GET A CLUE AUTHORS! ONE STAR IS GEING TOO GENEROUS!
My over-all favorite.......2005-05-05
I have been studying homeopathy for 30 years & when I do not have time to fully repertorize an illness (which is almost NEVER with anything acute these days!) this book is my first resource. It seems to cover most acute illnesses & is especially good for treating colds, flu, stings, gas, teething problems, sore throats, etc....
I would like to see a better cross-referenced Index, but the numerous charts supplied somewhat make up for this short-coming - making it pretty easy to locate the problem/illness without too much difficulty. It also contains a nice little Materia Medica in the back -- so if you can't decide between several remedies this will help narrow the choice.
I often back it up with "Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines" by Stephen Cummings & Dana Ullman - but if I had to choose only one book to purchase I would go with the book I am reviewing.
Another small short-coming of the book is it doesn't cover CELL SALTS as completely as needed (although, to be fair, no "quick-guide" homeopathic book does - with any depth anyway). which is why I would recommend the companion book: "Natural Healing with Cell Salts" by Dr. Skye Weintraub. Personally, I have found cell salts to work extremely well in conjunction with homeopathic remedies. Even though I practice the principals of classical homeopathy (ONE remedy at a time - changing the remedy until you find the one that works, & change remedies as soon as symptoms change &/or the current remedy no longer works) I still like to combine a homeopathic remedy with a cell salt. (A good example here would be a fever with a flushed face: homeopathic remedy might be Belladonna, and add the cell salt - Ferr Phos.)
Over-all I couldn't give the book 5 stars due to the inadequate Index and less-than-stellar coverage of CELL SALTS, but for my money, this is still a best-bet!
If you are new to homeopathy I can not encourage you enough to pursue this wonderful means of natural healing! And if you are a Christian, I urge you NOT to get hung up on the aspect of energetic healing until you learn more about the principals. I am an Evangelical Christian who have seen ignorant brother's & sister's in Christ shrink at the idea of homeopathics as if they were some kind of voodoo.
Anyone interested in pursuing the principals of healing through homeopathic medicine, more in-depth, would do well to purchase the book "The Science of Homeopathy" by George Vithoulkas and also get a Materia Medica by Boerricke and a "Repertory" by J. T. Kent. You could also call your local naturopath & ask if they offer classes. Anyone can learn homeopathy. I began when my children were born and they never had to take antibiotics more than once throughout their entire childhoods. They are now all adults who practice homeopathy with their own families, and this is the first homeopathic book I gave them as a gift when they moved into their new homes (along with a basic supply of remedies). Good luck, and God bless.
Excellent home reference.......2000-11-15
This is an excellent book overall and is the text for the National Center for Homeopathy's study group course. Dr. Panos gives verbose, anecdotal images of the differences between the different remedies for a given ailment, as well as good general background on homeopathy.

Pretty, but dated..........2006-07-11
This is a book I bought because of the color illustrations, not for the recipes. It has about 270 pages of recipes, about 90+ color illustrations, and an index thereafter. There are photos with some clever ideas I will use for plating and decorating, however I will use other appetizer books for the actual preparation of tasty foods..
I find I recommend Hors D'Oeuvres by Eric Treuille and Victoria Blashford-Snell most often to friends, because of it's tasty items and abundant photos with up to date clever ideas. This 1996 book by Arno Schmidt has been "left in the dust" by so many newer books. With the competition and high cost of color illustrations, I doubt a second edition is coming out.
The portions are for 50 to 100+ bite sized pieces of food...it's not hard to downsize this to half or less, however it is an incovenience to do so in general, an dsome recipes can not be downsized because of limiting ingredients such as small amounts of baking powder.
On the plus side, there is very good advice on service policies, such as continually collecting soiled equipment, how to best replenish a buffet table, when to refill wine, and has nice little personal touches included. Learn just how many cold canapes or hot hors d'oeuvres to make per person, depending on how long the guests will be nibbling on them (till the main meal is served), and this book gives good suggestions on how to best vary the types of goodies...things a home cook might not have considered, but could mean a disaster to an unprepared caterer.
Some items include mini-corn muffins with indented tops to take red caviar and sour cream, cheese curd, or chili and dried cranberries fillings; there are small popovers with shrimp and dill filling, salmon, basil and mustard filling, or whitefish, apple, and caper filling. There's salmon with fennel crust, or salmon with horseradish crust.
Try fried leaves and herbs, or various fried items for small groups; it can be hard to keep fried items hot and crunchy. He doesn't give an oil temperature, so trial and error will provide guidance. A nice novelty is transparent potato chips with herbs sandwiched between two chips, or sushi style items which are easy to pick up by their rice bottoms.
Make roast salted whole shrimp in their shells...I'd add some Old Bay, Cajun, or other spices as a marinade with some olive oil to liven them up, and realize these "messy" goodies are best for a buffet table, and not well tolerated as a "butler served" goodie, to be eaten while walking with a drink in one hand.
Maybe I'll try fried grapes, whisky shrimp, empanadas, or curried beef with chutney filling.
In view of several other wonderful appetizer books I have, this is not going to be read for it's recipes, but it will have strips of paper placed on food preparation photos I like, so this only gets 3 stars, and that's only if one gets it at a quite good price.
Style over substance.......2001-07-10
The glossy photos in this pricey book can help spark your imagination to come up with interesting-looking starters. I found several of the actual recipes, however, bland and uninteresting. Also beware that many of the photos are printed backwards or upside down so captions don't match. While sometimes pretty and pleasant, the look of the food is frequently rococo and overdone--the book doesn't follow its own advice to keep the presentation simple and the decorations in harmony with the setting. ...
Purchase Price vs. Content...Bad Value.......2001-06-08
Book cover is glossy(front and back). Pages are thick, glossy and heavy weight. Pictures, although color, do not appear to have been arranged by a professional food stylist...assumed in this era. Book gives ingredients and measurements in both European and American formats (grams vs. ounces). Comparing this book to other titles avaliable in market place today, book is too expensive for what you get. Glitzy buy vacuous.
not for the novice!.......2000-12-31
I received this book as a Christmas gift a few days ago and have not been able to put it down since! I agree with the writer from California that it is certainly not for the new cook, but as a part-time caterer, I have finally found the ultimate source for entertaining. There are no definite cooking times listed, and it's taken for granted that the reader is familiar with basic techniques (like for preparing pastries and mousse). If you're up to the challenge, the results will be spectacular and your friends will be amazed. The photographs are beautiful and inspiring!
An excellent book if you are in the catering business........1998-09-05
The Book of Hors D'Oeuvres and Canapes is an excellent book for the professional caterer, but is certainly not meant for the average or even above average cook. When I received the book, I was entranced by the stunning food presentations. On closer inspection I realized that the work involved to actually create the dishes would overwhelm anyone who had not gone to cooking school. Also, the portions are huge. Each recipe makes an average of 60 hors d'oeuvres or canapes. If the author ever makes a book for the lay person, I would be the first to buy it. But I will leave this one for the pros.
