Book Description
With a nose for crime and grime, Callahan Garrity has handled dirty killers on the streets as an Atlanta cop and on the job as a house cleaner. But she's always been able to keep her private life neatly separated from work -- until her cousin, Patti, is found dead. Exchanging her House Mouse cleaning uniform for a detective's cap, Callahan is hellbent to find the culprit. It's notthat she doesn't trust the Atlanta PD. She just knows that her suburbanite cousin's death is too strange to be accidental.
Callahan's search takes her on a convoluted trail from Patti's priest, who may have provided more than spiritual counsel, through Atlanta's inner city and into the shady deals of her cousin's newly prosperous husband. Yet, as the pieces start to fall into place, Callahan faces an even bigger challenge -- staying alive.

Anything But Homemade.......2007-09-15
Homemade Sin is anything but homemade. This mystery is definitely penned by a professional. Trocheck knows people--all classes of people. Her characters come alive, relationships ring true, and the dialogue works. And that gal Callahan is something else. I'd advise you not to mess with her.
Entertaining!.......2005-09-06
Really enjoyed yet another Kathy Hogan Trocheck book. They are light, entertaining books. Quick reads! Great for the summertime! Love the characters in the Callahan Garrity Mysteries...they take me back to my days in the old South! Thanks for making them available!

Quick and easy........2001-10-31
The thing I enjoyed most about this book was the pace of the story. It didn't drag on and on with pages of boring details. Even though it was a fairly quick read, there was enough information about people's surroundings, the family connections, etc., to make it interesting and hold the reader's attention. As for the whodunnit, that was fairly easy to figure out, but it didn't take away from the book. I will definitely take the time to read more books by this author.
A Cut Above.......2001-05-25
These may be considered cozies, but they have a distinct edge. The characters are fun, but also well developed, and the plots are decent. The characters and their personalities are complex. The books improve as they go along. I was panting for the last one, "Irish Eyes." I even bought the hardback. Am waiting for the next one. Begin at the beginning if you can, but not necessary.
Light, Enjoyable Read.......2000-09-26
I don't usually go for such light-hearted mysteries, I prefer more gore and murder. But I picked this up after a friend recommended it to me, and I was not disappointed. Having grown up in and around Atlanta my whole life, it was fun to read the fictional events and actually picture where they were taking place. I could just see where the murder occured, where Callihan lived and ate, where her relatives lived. I guess that was the most appealing thing about this book. You may have to live in Atlanta to truly like it.
That said, the story was quick and interesting. You know almost from the beginning 'whodunnit', but keep reading to see him get caught. I don't think this book was as close to the Tokars case as some may think, but there were some similarites. I picked this book up on Saturday morning and was done by the next day. I may read more of her books, if just to enjoy the local setting a bit more.

Absolutely a great read!!!.......2006-06-13
This book is great. It will make you cry and it will make you laugh, but it is real. I read the book in two days and would be more than happy to read it again. Brandon Maddox writes excellently. Everyone absolutely must read this. It deals with an issue that many rarely acknowledge, the family curse, but it does exist, and we see it in this book.

Boring and repetitive.......2007-01-03
Jerusalem, the historic and holy city, is always a draw. So when I heard of this series of obscure but supposedly literary novels focused on the city, I decided to give it a try. The first one, Sinai Tapestries, was amusing. I figured the second one, Jerusalem Poker, would get better. It didn't. Boring and repetative. How many times can the author milk the same conceits, phrases and stereotypical characters? Too many times for me.
A winning hand.......2006-07-14
Jerusalem Poker deserves to be in Amazon's top 10 sellers list and the only reason that it languishes, instead, at about 315,940 is that no-one knows about it. I wouldn't know about it either if I hadn't happened upon it in a second hand bookshop in about 1983. I count its discovery as one of the most serendipitous literary finds of my life and I regret that its author, Edward Whittemore, is dead and I can't tell him so.
JP is the second in Whittemore's Middle East quartet but can stand (magnificently) alone. While the first book, Sinai Tapestry, introduces some of the characters who make Jerusalem Poker so memorable, it is less accomplished than JP and might not appeal to a reader who has not already been converted to diehard Whittemorism by first reading Jerusalem Poker.
JP tells the stories of three men, Cairo Martyr, Munk Szondi and O'Sullivan Beare, who fetch up in Jerusalem in the aftermath of the First World War and who, in the dank back room of 3000-year old antiquities dealer, Haj Harun, begin a 12-year poker game in which the fate of Jerusalem itself is at stake.
Whittemore's real main character is the city of Jerusalem itself, faithfully defended throughout all the years of its existence by poor gentle old Haj Harun in his faded yellow cloak and rusty Crusader helmet, usually ignored, often reviled and always befuddled about which of Jerusalem's many attackers he is currently facing.
But Jerusalem and Haj Harun are just two of the beguiling characters conjured by Whittemore's inventive and original mind. Szondi, Martyr and O'Sullivan Beare, and a host of minor players, some weird, some mad, all memorable, career through history, adventure, misadventure, tragedy, love and time to end up somehow entangled in the affairs of the ancient city.
Jerusalem Poker defies synopsis, description or analysis. It is the sort of novel that seizes the reader with the first paragraph and drags them through pages of wonder, humour, pathos and fabulous prose until spitting them out at the end, winded, delighted and doomed to reread it at least several more times.
If you have ever been bemused by the seeming lunacy of Middle Eastern politics, Jerusalem Poker will lead you, sometimes gently, sometimes bloodily and frequently humorously through some of the historical thickets from which the madness arose. Or, if you are the sort of reader who likes to be possessed by a book, to fall in love with its words and cherish its characters and ideas, Jerusalem Poker is the one you've been looking for.
One of the best fiction writers of our time........2002-12-07
If you like to read good, no, Great writing, you owe it to yourself to read Whittemore. Get all five of his novels and I assure you that you will not be left wanting.(Except for more.) Unfortunately, we have been robbed by death of this giant of literature. Few can match the epic humanity and scope of Edward Whittemores' characters, places and dreams. He is sorely missed even though relatively few readers have even heard of him. Hopefully the re-release of his books will at least partially remedy this literary injustice.
BACK IN PRINT.......2002-10-10
Old Earth Books will be reprinting this and the other four Whittemore novels. Google the web for "Edward Whittemore".
It sticks with you.......2001-07-17
I woke up this morning thinking of this book, though it must be at least 15 years since I read it. Jerusalem Poker is a wonderful fantasy that brings together an Irish fugative gun-runner, a salesman of mummy dust and a garlic-cruching son of an international banking family in a friendly game of poker, and tells their stories by turn. I suppose the friendliness of the game is as much a fantasy as the rest of the book, which is too bad, but it's nice to indulge such fantasies every now and then.

Resourceful.......2007-08-28
Throughout the book you will find all kinds of important resources. I have some of the other bipolar books, but this one is a favorite, because it is very comprehensive and not overwhelming. This is the one I pass on to relatives who need an introduction to the disorder.
Terrific.......2007-07-27
Informative, easy to understand, and doesn't ramble. I just wish it had more info on hypomania.
Worth it.......2007-07-21
For anybody looking to build a beginning foundation of Bipolar knowledge, this book is a must. It covers almost every relevant topic relating to the disorder. It is a great book for Bipolar sufferers as well as anyone around them seeking a deeper understanding. One of my top 5 books.
Psychology Today: Taming Bipolar Disorder.......2007-06-30
I purchased four of these books...one for each of our daughters and myself. All four of us are so grateful to have discovered this comprehensive and reader-friendly help source. One of our daughters has just been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. We've been riding roller-coaster emotions with her. "Taming Bipolar Disorder" reveals the complexities involved with the disease, and presents hope through health resources and even provides a nutritional support section.
I highly recommend this publication to anyone who has or knows/loves someone with, Bipolar Disorder.
An Intellectual's Bipolar Book.......2007-05-12
This is an excellect resource for both consumers and friends and family of someone with a bipolar diagnosis. It is by far the best book I've found on the disorder, and has truely enriched my understanding and knowledge of Bipolar disorder. It's intellectual yet accessable and never talks down to the reader. In my experience many biploar books simplify issues and censor information, just as some psychiatrists choose to not disclose important information rather than honoring the patient's ability to weigh the facts/evidence and make their own informed decision on treatment. It does make some recommendations, such as the importance of being medication-compliant and taking responsibility for the undesired effects of the disorder, but I think these are sound suggestions, and well-founded with personal annecdotes (of a great number of people, not just the author- whose father is bipolar) and medical references.
THIS IS A MUST-HAVE BOOK!
This book is both comprehensive and thorough. It's also very reader-friendly, as it augments the text with highlighted boxes. Ms. Oliwenstein employs these eye-catching sidebars to define terminology, offer personal stories and Q&A with established psychiatrists specializing in Bipolar research and treatment.
I honestly cannot think of any aspect that was omitted. Here are some chapter titles: Navigating the Health-Care System, The Bipolar Medicine Chest, The Cycles of Sanity, Stopping the Swing Before It Starts, Beyond Burned Bridges: Fixing the Problems You Create, Lean On Me, In the Workplace, At Home, The Bipolar Child, A Survival Guide for Friends and Family, (and Glossary, Further Reading and Resources). Sensitive issues are addressed, such as bipolar's effects on romantic relationships, medical concerns related to pregnancy, and even how to manage/deal with financial burdens one faces as a consequence of mania. Each of the chapters has numerous sub-headings so it's easy to target your reading to specific areas of interest. All of the 16 chapters (of which the above are a small sample) are organized into 4 Parts, each with a conhesive theme.
One of my greatest discoveries in the book was learning that some frequently prescribed medications interfere with nutrient absorption and specific and important deficiencies may result if not addressed. My Stanford-educated psychiatrist never told me that anticonvulsant medications (Depakote, Lamictal, etc) tend to leach vitamin E out of the body. That's an important bit of information, and something I wouldn't have known otherwise. Also, B vitamins (B-6, B-12, folic acid- a crucial vitmin to help cellular growth, something deminished in bipolar disorder yet greatly important), zinc and copper have been found to have positive results in bipolar patients. Good nutrition is often overlooked in treatment, but pharmaceutical drugs are only one aspect of a complete treatment plan (along with psychotherapy, exercise, sleep, regular routines, stress reduction, etc) and it's important to not lose sight of this fact.
Hope that this discussion has given you a good idea of what you'll find in "Psychology Today: Taming Bipolar Disorder" and obviously I'm pretty excited to recommend this book.
Good luck in your journey and best of health to you!

Good reference for experienced cook.......2005-12-09
I found the recipes not very easy to follow, but if you are already somewhat familiar with Vietnamese cooking techniques (salad dressing, etc) it is a good reference cook. I also found the recipe for Husband and Wife cake, which is very rare among cookbooks.
This book is definitely not for beginners.
Entertaining but not informative.......2000-02-22
This book belongs to one of many in a series of world cuisines and I have found all of them to be embellished with decorative and beautiful pictures. Unfortunately, the recipes that accompany them tend to be instructionally inexplicit and often poor interpretations of the recipes of these countries. If you're interested in getting a crash course in a new cuisine this book is perfect, but pass on this book if you are a serious cook.
Pretty..but is not a must have.......2000-01-05
It has pretty pictures and some chatty writing but I would not consider it a must have on the shelf of Vietnamese cooking. Though it is better than alot of Vietnamese cookbooks I have come across.
Flaws include:
1) Assumption of knowledge of meat preparation including how to clean squid and cutting for tenderness;
2) Does not prepare reader fully when recipe is longer than 15 minutes. Yes indeed it will take more than 15, matter of fact, it will approach an hour or so (yipes);
3) Some recipes especially stocks are westernized excessively (celery! no star anise);
The section on pickles though is good. So are the pictures dealing with ingredients.
Get this pupster on a discount not at full retail. It is good as a supplement but it is not a desert island classic.
Easy recipes for College Students!.......1999-01-18
I am currently attending college and cooking is not my forte! However, I love Vietnamese food and wanted a book with pictures to help guide my limited culinary skills. This book is the one!! The bright, colorful, and detailed pictures help the novice chef to determine whether he/ she is on the right track. The recipes are easy to follow and I actually had fun cooking! Take it from me, I'm Vietnamese and the recipes are authentic!

Wasted my money!.......2007-07-26
This book is bad in so many ways. It has very few recipes and is not worth it's price. The recipes it does have are for strange dishes most of which I (who's vietnamese and has grown up on authentic Vietnamese food) have never heard of and would never try (frog's legs??!!?). I'm sure there's someone out there who would eat these exotic harder-than-worth-to-make dishes but good luck to that person since the instructions are unclear, undetailed, and overall very poorly written.
A FEAST FOR THE EYES.......2007-03-30
What a terrific book! The recipes are succintly worded and truly authentic. The photography is so excellent, you want to devour the pages. An excellent follow-up to my recent visit to Vietnam.

Best book for beginning asian cooking..........2003-02-12
This book is incredible. First, the photography is excellent, beautifully portraying most of the recipes. The book begins with a complete listing of all of the ingredients used. It is about 6 pages of pertinent information, including pictures for some of the most obscure ingredients. The recipes cover a thorough range of the basic recipes that you may be looking for. I am Indian and am thrilled with the list. Just about every recipe is critical, they appear back-to-back and have several pictures. I will probably cook every recipe in the Indian section. That section alone makes it worth the purchase. However, it covers seven other asian cuisines in a very similar manner. It also offers enticing "melting pot" menus, mixing the cuisines. You will get the recipes you want, that you can make, with a little commentary and exquisite pictures. This is one of the best cook books I have ever seen.
Yum Yum Yum.......2001-06-09
It is soo good !! I tried the eggs curry from Indonesia it is so yummy !! Also the have menu suggestions so that was real helpfull since I do a lot of parties !!!
This book is awesome!.......1999-05-11
All recipes are well described and illustrated. Everything is clear and easy to understand.

many ingredients are not availale in US.......2003-07-05
I bought the cook book from Mrs. Trieu Thi Choi to take home. I found there are so many ingredients called for in her recipes that are not available in US, particularly the one called "bôt khai" which is used in making steamed buns (Bánh bao) .
Also, the recipes use too much Monosodium glutamate.
probably the best book I've seen on Vietnamese cooking.......2000-07-17
Perhaps this is not the best cookbook I've ever seen, but the best cookbook for Vietnamese food. It provides rich detailed pictures with each recipe, spells out all the required ingredients that you need before getting started, and even provides alternative ingredients or methods where appropriate. The introduction does a good job of explaining the unusual ingredients (with pictures)used in Vietnamese food for those who are unfamiliar with this cuisine.
I have found that, if I follow the recipes exactly and source all the right ingredients, the dishes turn as good (or sometimes better) than the food I eat on my many trips to Vietnam.
I have been using the book for about a year now, but unlike the first reviewer, I have not had any problems with the construction of the book itself. Perhaps she bought one of the many poorly made illegal copies on the streets on Saigon(?)
This is one of the best Vietnamese cookbooks available!.......1999-10-04
I am buying a copy of this book for my mother, aunts and culinary friends. The pictures are beautiful- of the food and of the country. The recipes are easy to understand and authentic- it reminded me of my mother's cooking... And she is an excellent chef. I highly recommend this book to all who are interested in preparing Vietnamese food.
This collection of recipes was sadly unrealistic........1999-08-07
In this collection of recipes I found that the book was poorly manufactured. There were pages that were left blank. I found that out only after I purchased the book. The book flips for one page number to another in no particular oder. The books I browse through each had there own type of defect. Overall the book was made bad but the recipes were very interesting and the pre-history was well written.
