A Story that will Keep You Clued (and Glued) to the Pages.......2005-12-27
Constable Evans is walking a tightrope between his impending marriage and his job. Add in the fact that his mother is against the upcoming marriage and one would think he has a full plate to deal with. Then a young girl is reported missing by her boyfriend, apparently she'd gone missing while they were hiking.
Then to further confuse his life, musical clues start appearing and Evan is going to have to figure out how to solve them, because he hasn't a clue as to where the girl is or how to find her and neither do the searchers who have been looking for her. Apparently there is more to the missing girl than meets the eye, because now it looks like maybe she'd been abducted and isn't just lost. And to make matters even worse, Evan's fiancee goes missing as well. Missing after she'd chased one of those musical clues.
There is mystery here, a story that will grip you and characters full of interest. This is a story you will have a fun time with. I know I did.
Very enjoyable........2005-10-13
Evan is a well-drawn character who has a good relationship with his superior. He follows the clues and his instincts, while realizing the impact of crime on the victim, those around them and the perpetrator. This is a very enjoyable series that has, particularly with this book, gone from being cozy to traditional mystery. There is still humor and light moments, but the mystery has more focus and is more interesting. I enjoyed book, and liked the ending.
Evan Blessed.......2005-09-23
Very enjoyable 'cozy' mystery (one of a series) set in Wales. Evan, the main character in the series, is a wonderful person to spend time with, and the Welsh village is populated with an array of marvelous personalities. Funny, great attention to detail, wonderful use of Wales (feels like you're vacationing), and an interesting mystery as well.
A good, solid read.......2005-09-08
If you're a fan of Rhys Bowen's previous Constable Evans books, you certainly won't be disappointed with her latest installment.
This books opens with Evan and Bronwen planning their upcoming nuptials. However, a young man soon shows up on the doorstep of Evan's cottage saying that his girlfriend has disappeared while they were hiking on the mountain. In the course of searching for the girl, the police find a creepy bunker, stocked with a cot, food, music and even handcuffs! Could this somehow be involved with the missing girl?
As the investigation continues, Evan is selected as the recipient of a number of musical clues (purportedly from the girl's kidnapper). The case soon takes a dramatic turn, however, and Evan has to work feverishly to discover the identity of the clue-sender before it's too late.
This book is another comfortable addition to Rhys Bowen's quaint series featuring the hardworking (and intelligent) Constable Evan Evans. The village setting and characters are now quite familiar to us, and it's always enjoyable to read about them. While the story is undoubtedly captivating, one can identify the culprit early on, and there are a few distracting editing errors. Although you may guess the outcome somewhat early on, getting there is more than half the fun.
Another Winner.......2005-08-18
Having read and enjoyed the whole Evan series, I was so glad I'd pre-ordered this one. I'd probably finished mine before the local bookstore had even unpacked their copies. And it was good! The plot was nice and twisty with a fine resolution. Of course the local characters and locale are what make this series so unique, here we have all the regulars (I love the feuding pastor's wives) plus two cranky mothers-in-law to be. While the story was a little darker than some of Evan's stories, I didn't think it was unrealistic or too violent.
I can't wait until the next one.

Fantastic Read.......2003-12-27
I started out with the Stonewycke series by Phillips and Pella. They were fantastic also for different reasons. This series is full of Russian history wound around fictional characters. The characters stories are deep and compelling. There is something for everyone here. You'll be really glad you read these and will likely go looking for others that these two writers have written.
A House Divided Review.......2001-12-10
After reading the novel A House Divided, a positive personal conclusion was made. Although the introduction of the novel was confusing and somewhat misleading, the intricate details of the plot seemed to overcome the first negative impression. The intense drama of the book was compelling in itself for it kept the reader interested. The young love story of Katrina and Dmitri was intricately woven around the wherabouts of her maidservant Anna, and her brother Sergei. Written by Michael Philips and Judith Pello, A House Divided takes place in the harsh yet romantic setting of Russia. Although chaos of war is going on around them, the characters somehow find a greater inner peace. The novel emits a sorrowful feeling in the beginning of the book, for Paul's decision to desert his family and friends for the pride of his country, he joins the war. When Sergei joins Paul's patriotic decision of joining the war, Anna is forced to face the emotion of devastation. Once again, Anna has to but her own interests and concerns aside so she is able to comfort her master, Katrina. While Anna and Katrina's loves are away defending their freedom and safety, Katrina and Anna developed a relationship. At the beginning of the novel, Katrina is self-centered and prideful towards Anna. Katrina degrades Anna by calling her just a servant girl, and denies her of any friendship. However, when her pride was set aside and kindness concurred, the two young women developed a friendship that proved true to the end. When the war was over, Katrina and Dmitri married. Anna and Sergei wondered if their love would ever enable them also, to be joined in the lifelong commitment of marriage. A House Divided was a well-written, well-enjoyed novel. A recommendation for another reader to embark apon this adventure is high.
This is a great book!.......1998-01-17
It has lots of history of pre-revolutionary Russia and tells a great story of a peasant family's life. It shows God working through their life through all their ups and downs. I thought it was great and it was a very fast read(even though it was 5 books!!) God Bless
All of the books are tragic, happy, fun and fullfilling!.......1998-01-13
I believe that Judith Pella, and Michael Phillips have created a wonderful story of love, loss, courage, and strength. The charaters are so real to life that I felt sad when I came to the end of the last book. It felt like I was losing some of my closest friends. I didn't want to stop reading any of the stories, at any point. The story is great, and the history surprisingly well written and accurate. Everyone should read this collection of books.

fine romantic fantasy.......2005-06-29
It has been two years since Mathewar, the master of the College of Magicians and his wife Lady Angarred visited the court in the capital city of Pergodi in the kingdom of Karededin. They are surprised to get a summons from fourteen year old King Jerret to return to court. When they arrive they see much that distresses them as Jerret went to war with Goss because he bankrupted his treasury and needs the wealth of Goss to stay solvent.
In the castle are the Bound, soulless men and women who have no sense of identity and must obey the Binder who is a member of the Huru family that the king exiled for treason. The king is prepared to recall the Huru family, Noldeth and his two sons Polgar and Cullen while leaving Drustig in exile in Og. A palace coup leaves the king dead and Cullen on the thrown but Drustig is coming to take his power away from him. Both brothers possess half of a magic crown. One that binds and one that loosens the binding and drives people mad. Mathewar must find a way to destroy Drustig and bring the two halves of the crown together otherwise Karededin will plunge into a civil war.
This sequel to the DAUGHTER OF EXILE is more action oriented but there is enough romance between the various couples so that fans of romantic fantasy won't feel cheated. The protagonist has some life lessons to learn and he must gain the wisdom to wear the crown without succumbing to its temptations. All the various sub-plots tie back to the main storyline so that readers feels satisfied with the way the story ends. It is hoped Isabel Glass, a gifted and creative fantasist, visits this world in the future books.

I'm proof that Tammi's plan works. I lost 27 pounds of fat and 16.5 inches in 12 weeks. With Tammi's guide I learned how easy it can be to eat healthy foods and promote weight loss. Her book is easy to understand, motivational and will show you how to achieve similar results. It can work for you too! You won't be disapointed. The knowledge and confidence I received from Tammi have literally changed my life. This is not a magic pill but the tools she gives you are. Good, but..........2005-12-08
My first impression was the similarity to "Body for Life."
At the same time, there's a lot of independent research that suggests 2-3 apples a day can lower blood cholesterol, plus the benefit of being a natural appetite suppressant. It's important to note, too, that she also provides recipes that incorporate apples, so you're nto always eating an apple before each meal.
The suggested workout is reasonable with a handful of functionally fit, big-muscle exercises, and is broken down into a upper/lower split routine of 3 days of strength training alternating with 4 days of cardio.
All in all, it's structured enough for people who need that on a daily basis in order to achieve their weight loss goals.
For best results, though, I'd suggest incorporating its principles (e.g., apples and structure) into "Body for Life" and "Eating for Life."
Munching on the Apple Diet..........2005-11-29
The Apple Diet is essentially a low fat diet with a twist. Dieters on the plan eat three apples a day - one prior to each meal.
The premise behind the diet is a simple one. You eat an apple that fills you up with fiber, water and other nutrients and thus reduce your appetite. Apples pack a lot of benefits in a low calorie package.
This plan also includes a moderate calorie, low fat diet. Sample 1500 day includes apple, omelet, and oatmeal for breakfast, non fat cottage cheese and non fat yogurt for a snack. Chicken, broccoli, brown rice and apple for lunch, cappuccino shake for mid afternoon snack and dinner of salmon salad and you guessed it - an apple.
The plan also includes lots of exercise. Cardiovascular, and weight training with squats, lunges, chest presses etc.
The book makes it sound easy. Just eat your apples and voila..simple weight loss. In truth the plan would be very difficult for the average person looking to lose lbs. to stick with for the long haul and keep the weight off.
The diet reminds me of Bill Phillips initial Body for Life plan only not as good. Bill's initial diet included eating very clean ie chicken breast, brown rice, non starchy veggies etc. but it allowed for more fat. The Apple Diet plan is under 20% fat. Bill's plan has also expanded to include his new Eating For Life cookbook with tons of great tasting recipes. The recipes are far more interesting and easy to stick to than the ones in the Apple Diet.
Bill also allows for one cheat night. With the Apple Diet you get nothing..Nada..no chocolate, no ice cream, no dippin dots. Just grilled this or steamed that. How boring is that!
So yes this will work if you are hard core ready for intense clean eating. But if you want a little bit more laxity and interest try Bill's plan instead or if you are the average Mr. or Ms. trying to lose weight, up your protein some for satiation, count your calories but don't worry about being quite so perfect every day.
Another drawback to the plan is the apples. I like apples but THREE a day! Everyday!....hmmm could this diet be sponsored by companies like the Washington Apple Growers? Could this be a thinly disguised attempt to sell more apples.
Indeed we all agree that they have fiber and are good for us. BUT 3 per day?
Bottomline if you can eat very clean for the rest of your life and 3 apples every day..then this may be the perfect diet for you. If not...pick another plan.
One of the best of its kind.......2005-09-23
I am a personal trainer certified by the American Council on Exercise and have reviewed many books on exercise and nutrition. Tammi Flynn's work is outstanding! She gives the reader the opportunity to learn and form new habits without the stress usually associated with fad and crash programs. The 3-Apple-a-Day Plan makes sense. I recommend it to all my clients.

Nan Kempner knows her parties. As part of the Park Avenue haut monde, she has entertained, and been entertained, by a heady mixture of the social and talented (and those who are both). In R.S.V.P. she introduces readers to more than two dozen of her favorite hosts, who provide menus and entertaining strategies for a range of choice events. These run the gamut from dockside breakfasts to candlelit dinners deluxe. The 120 or so recipes included produce elegant yet uncomplicated fare that should delight anyone's guests without taxing the cook. Glimpses into the homes (or in one case, the yacht) of the likes of Oscar and Annette de la Renta, designer Valentino Garavani, and artist Ross Bleckner, via words and pictures, entice the voyeur in us all, while graceful notes provide an idea of who the party givers are.
Divided into sections that feature lunches, informal dinners, buffets, and galas, the book offers, for example, the Corn and Feta Soufflé of Princess Marie Chantal of Greece, served at a light lunch, and the savory Mushroom Tart of vineyard patrons Carole and François Rochas, prepared for a "perfect" fall repast. Desserts aren't neglected and include the likes of Orange Floating Island and Fig Sorbet with "Queen of Sheba" Chocolate Cookies. A final section, "Me and More Friends," brings Kempner herself onstage with her recipe for beignet-like Pet de Nonnes, as well as offering formulas for Bill Blass's Sour Cream Soufflé and Nancy Reagan's Currant Cookies, among others. With 300 color photos, the large-format book reveals a world that readers can enjoy visiting, and includes dishes for their own R.S.V.P. occasions. --Arthur Boehm

Menus for Entertaining from People Who Really Know How.......2006-03-21
It was a gift for my wife and she loved it. We like to entertain and the book has many good ideas.
Nan Rocks.......2005-05-18
Ya gotta love the pictures, try some of the recipes, and laugh a bunch. Its a nice cook book if you are into cookbooks, but mostly get it for the fun of it.
I like this book!.......2005-01-20
I really liked this book and enjoyed very much reading it. The recipes are quiet easy to prepare and taste very good. I find some of the other reviews very inappropriate and not quiet fair. So she said something in an interview about fat people - maybe it was quoted out of context - whatever, it has nothing to do with the book she wrote. This book is about people from the "society" who entertain and that's what you get. The photos are excellent and I like the way Nan describes her friends and the places they live in. Why not just enjoy it and image how it would be to live in beautiful houses and give such lovely luncheons and parties...
Nan could have afforded better writer and editor!.......2002-04-24
Beautifully photographed and a great idea, this book could have been much better if Nan used a better writer. I laughed so much reading the titles of the photos--they are hilarious! I thought she would be much more original and sophisticated than that. However it contains some good recipes.
GREAT BOOK.......2001-05-31
Nan; your book is excellent !!! I really enjoy it. Quentin Bacon photographs are also really great !!!! This is the best book on cooking I've ever seen.
