5 out of 5 stars When 2 worlds collide, no one is the winner.......2007-07-17

When 14-year-old Devona Jefferson and her three-month-old baby Crystal are shot down near the projects at 22 Hobart St (thus called Double Deuce), a committee of the residents comprised of women, old men and the reverend Orestes Tillis contact Hawk and ask him to help weed out the gangs who have taken over the neighborhood. Hawk agrees to help and brings in Spenser. Understandably suspicious of Spenser, many of the residents outright state that they do not want him there - the most outspoken being Tillis, who calls Spenser the White Satan and says that he will not support Spenser being there. Hawk says that Spenser is there with him and if anyone has a problem with that, then both he and Spenser will be on their way.

Spenser and Hawk spend a lot of time around the Double Deuce, trying to work out who runs the Hobarts (the local gang) as well as who spiked (shot) Devona and her baby. As they investigate, connections to their old "friend" Tony Marcus pops up - it seems that Marcus has been using the Hobarts to run drugs through the area.

In many ways, this was a very difficult book to read - not to say I did not enjoy it, but it was full of uncomfortable truths about the disenfranchised who surround us every day. It paints a very bleak picture of life in the projects. I would recommend this book to just about anyone - read it and think about it.

1 out of 5 stars Double Poo.......2007-06-06

I just read this book 2 days ago,so I still remember it clearly. This must be a kids book like Nancy Drew or something to merit anything over 2 stars. Firstly, the whole story is entirely cliche. We have two tough guy detectives who dont talk much cause they dont need to "we dont think, it just happens" or something stupid like that which they actually say in the book. The whole young gangster and power hungry minister(oh wow thats creative) are the basic characters as well. The very first chapter is the closest this book gets to exiting, they pretty much drag the story with a bunch of nonsense filler. Just like the reporter lady "doesnt know anything about the streets" neither does the author who pretty much uses basic sterotypes, and situations. I for one was very dissapointed, i will not read any more of his generic garbage. One thing I did get out of this book is the confidence for writing my own novels since I know that at worst my book would still be better than this one and some people are giving it pretty good ratings (WTF???)I would've like to have had the option of a negative 5. Thanks for your time whoever you are do not make the same mistake I did!

5 out of 5 stars Casting Pearls Before Swine to find a Pearl in the Oyster. Reverse Right. Leave Left........2007-04-24

As a calculated contrast to life in the gang-infested DOUBLE DEUCE housing complex, scenes of daily doings in Susan's home provided prime parlay between Spenser and his lady, resulting in poignant posing in the DD bailiwick broken up by hearty humor in the SS Titanic. What a cartoon-funny difference (no black-tongued-grins from "THE WAR OF THE ROSES" there) Parker painted between Susan's fronted femaleness and Spenser's gangling guy-ness. As Parker obviously planned, the light-hearted clashes in SS roommate rambles became an "Accidental Family" foil to the heartbreaking reality-overwhelm of the gang members' no-relief lifestyle boring holes of terror into their "straight" neighbors.

In DOUBLE DEUCE Parker created another classic "pair" of new female characters, providing them with reverse personalities and reverse first letters in their names:

"E. M." was for Erin Macklin who drank her whiskey easy as she held the glass with both hands (contemplate why Parker repeated more than thrice how Macklin held her amber-filled glass, with the caring gesture of duel palms).

"M. E." was for Marge Eagen, who pumped and primped her preen until Spenser crimped her lack of style. (For an opposite styled Marge character, a genuine, real-life article of bull dog class, see Coal & Coca-Cola)

As a Parker fan would anticipate, the scenes in which these two women seared the social brine with Spenser were intriguing, engrossing, and effortlessly entertaining.

Hawk was featured in his best ebony sheen in DOUBLE DEUCE, as his image, which had preceded him into gangland territory, was developed through interactions with the gang members, all of which were fascinating, and felt to be on target with the tang and sizzle of those subcultures. Another side of Hawk's image was uncovered here, through his intimate study of black-lady Jackie, and her jigsaw-ed break-down of Hawk's heart hung low to capture her song.

The continuation of Pearl-the-wonder-dog's character (she was introduced with pizzazz in PASTIME, # 18 Spenser) provided a welcome warm spot in this plot. I couldn't help but wonder if Parker might use the heart-healing-dog to get through to the gangs, as he used the 3 mongrels rescued in STARDUST (used them to help coax Jill's soul to return for another round of participation in life).

In the first part of Chapter 37 an exquisite scene of an easy-dance-step, multi-manoeuver training seminar set itself up around mangy machinations (no hair lost on the dog) of Susan, Spenser, pancakes, and Pearl:

>> I (Spenser) left my pancakes and went to the bedroom and put on a shirt (training from Susan). When I came back Pearl was still sitting gazing at my plate, but the plate was empty and clean. I looked at her. She looked back clear eyed and guilt free, alert for another opportunity.

>> "Ah yes," I said, "a hunting dog." <<

Contemplate that in reference to Hawk's name, which clarified in DOUBLE DEUCE's chapter 37, especially in reference to Jackie's complaints that she couldn't "get to him."

Having endured decades mired within a nurtured angst of ethical determinations, as humans trod toward the core of the Apple from "The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil" ... might they sometimes long for a temporary release from the moral gauntlet; might they long for a cease of constantly pushed cerebral convolutions defining every dot quantum on the eternal line between Right and Wrong ... might they wish for a few moments to experience the easy, non-complex mind, set into the nature of a hunting dog, or a Hawk ... might they sometimes long to be:

"Clear eyed and guilt free"?

In addition to primal concepts, prime setting descriptions were applied here, as only Parker could accomplish, in bringing to pose on paper the essence of ghetto life.

Get a dog's life?

The concluding scene in DOUBLE DEUCE catered a surprising twist to Susan and Spenser's attempts at traditional homemaking. The close was as refreshing to the double S as a storm-brought rainbow. The choice carried in DD's final chapter surfaced in silent style into the thematic structure of PAPER DOLL, # 20 in the Spenser series.

A prolific author successfully carries a ranging style through time and time and time, until the heart says, "Take to the sky on the wings of a hawk."

5 out of 5 stars Spenser and Hawk "clean" a section of the ghetto of gangs.......2006-01-23

Spenser and Hawk are both noble, honorable men of the highest caliber. They are the best of friends, willing to join the other in the deadliest of fights, all the other has to do is ask. In this story, some people in a ghetto neighborhood are desperate to rid their neighborhood of the scourge of gangs and drugs. They turn to Hawk to help them, but are unable to offer him anything in return. Hawk agrees and then asks Spenser to assist him at the same rate of pay.
While we learn a great deal about Spenser's past in the Spenser series of books, Hawk is an enigma. In this book, we learn a little bit about him, but he remains circumspect about his past. All we learn is that he probably grew up in a very dangerous environment and through unusual circumstances managed to survive to adulthood. Hawk uses those skills to probe the neighborhood and deal with the members of a violent youth gang. A teen mother and her new baby have been ruthlessly gunned down and the prime suspect is a gang led by a very tough kid named Major Johnson. They proclaim their innocence, although they are coy about it, as they enjoy the attention from Hawk, someone they respect.
There is a subplot as well. Spenser and Susan agree to live together, so Spenser moves in with Susan. Although they "get along", there is a great deal of underlying tension. Susan eats healthy and Spenser eats hearty. Finally, they agree that they love each other and will stay together, but they dissolve their cohabitation union. Hawk also has a love interest, a beautiful black woman who tries to get inside him but fails. When Hawk shoots past her to wound a man threatening to kill her, she decides that her interest in Hawk is not that strong.
As always, the dialog in this Spenser novel is entertaining and would uplift even the weakest plot, which this one is not. There are strong supporting minor characters, including an ex-nun who works with gang members. She drinks whiskey with Spenser and he even takes note of her in a non-professional way. This is one of the better Spenser novels.

4 out of 5 stars Got me hooked on Spenser .......2006-01-13

This was the first Spenser book I read. I spotted the book on a 4 books for a dollar table at a used book sale. I was a fan of the "Spenser For Hire" TV show and thought it would make a fun quick read. I was right about it being a fun, quick read. Something else happened though that I did not expect. Spenser and Hawk became (and have remained) my all-time favorite detective duo and Robert B. Parker bacame (and remains one of my favorite writers in any genre.) As with all the Spenser books, the plot is OK, but the really experience is getting to know Spenser, Hawk, Susan etc. It is Parker's brilliantly drawn characters that will keep you turning the pages and buying novel after novel.

In Chance, you will meet the least trustworthy group of double-dealers you can ever imagine. They won't tell Spenser what's really going on, and switch allegiances at the drop of a hat. Just when you think you know what will happen next, the plot switches off into an unexpected direction.

Anthony Meeker, the biggest rat of them all, will keep you fascinated by raising the age-old question of what some women see in the men they marry.

Compared to most Spenser stories, this one has twice the plot. It's also filled with the usual entertaining by-play among Spenser, Hawk and Susan.

If you're like me, you won't be able to put this entertaining story down after starting it.

Take a Chance! You'll find it irresistible!

Lessons from the Samurai depicts the methods and philosophy of ancient Japanese warriors. The author, Fred Neff's, book uses clear descriptions and pictures to teach Samurai fighting techniques and tactics. The book, however, provides far more than just fighting methodology, it supplies an ancient philosophy that still has relevance for today when properly understood and used. Fred Neff explains significant principles of philosophy from the Samurai such as mushin, makoto, isshin, suki, and kufu that when properly applied make a strong fighter. The author goes further by showing other uses for these same principles in other aspects of a person's life. Explaining how these principles can be useful for self-improvement is fascinating and rewarding enough, to warrant reading the book. Fred Neff also explains the Bushido Code referred to as the "way of the warrior," which includes loyalty, justice, courage, benevolence, and politeness. These are values that still are needed and are very important in balancing the power derived from having learned fighting techniques. Fred Neff the author of the book's background shows his support for Bushido principles as reflected in the service he has provided to the community which was the basis for awards to him like The City of St. Paul Citizen of the Month, commendation from the Sibley County Attorney's Office, the WCCO Radio Award, and Presidential Medal Of Merit. Balancing the presentation of fighting moves with humane philosophy provides for a balanced approach to martial arts training, which may be one of the reasons supporting Fred Neff's authoring sixteen books on self-defense related themes. These books were published by Lerner Publications, who printed many different books by Fred Neff because of their positive reception. Lessons from the Japanese Masters does justice to the topic of the Samurai while showing sensitivity for the need to make the information relevant for today's needs. Lessons from the Samurai is a book that I can strongly recommend.

I have been studying Jujitsu for a little over two years. Antoher student recommended I get a copy of a book on Lessons from the Samurai warriors by Fred Neff that is really helpful in getting not only the foundation of Jujitsu, but strategy for its use in a fight. After buying and reading a copy, I was very impressed. I took the book to work to show a friend of mine, who is far more advanced in his knowledge of Japanese fighting arts. He has been studying Japanese martial arts for years and related to me that Fred Neff's book was what originally caught his interest in the Japanese martial arts. I have read and reread Lessons from the Samurai. My practice now includes an increasing number of fighting techniques taught in this practical book. It is a book with enduring appeal.

4 out of 5 stars helpful for parents.......2006-03-01

As a professional counselor, I was interested in specific ideas on helping parents & children of divorce. This book had some very concrete ideas. It is aimed at parents, written in 'plain-speak'. There's nothing new or eath-shaking here, but it is a pretty all-inclusive little book for parents interested in helping their children deal with the issue of divorce.

                    3 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2005-07-12

It's a good overview, but I needed more situational type information. How to work through the tough disagreements with a spouse who is unwilling to meet on common ground. How to deal with younger children and how it impacts them. I did take away some good advice, but most of the book is common sense.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!!.......2002-06-26

This book has been an invaluable resource. It provides very useful suggestions and is a must buy for any family undergoing a divorce or those professionals working with divorced families.

                    5 out of 5 stars Such a huge help!.......2002-06-26

Making Divorce Easier on Your Child is a great resource for parents who are divorcing. It provides clear and simple solutions to sticky situations and common-sense advice for parents who are going through a divorce or who have already divorced. I highly recommend it.

I love this book. I read this 'cookbook' when I want to run away from home. Sure, there are recipes, but I can get recipes off the web. I prefer learning about Richard's life with Lulu and Lucien, it's like living better my own self. Bon Voyage and Bon Apetit!

This is simply the finest cookbook in my library, and one above all others that I could simply not do without. It is both a pleasure to read and a goldmine of authentic, simple, provencale cuisine that allows the reader a clear understanding of what this food is really about. It is moe than a cookbook, it is a window into a world that makes one want to pack his bags and move to Provence.

I own 120 cookbooks, and I read others whenever I get a chance. I cook French, Indian, Chinese, Italian, and Mexican. And, yes, I'm a fool for good restaurants. This is one of the cookbooks I would least like to do without. It gives a good idea of what Provencal cuisine is like, and the recipes are detailed and complete. And the results are delicious. I hope it gets reprinted.

                    Book Description

Of all of the culinary treasures that Richard Olney brought home from France for his American audience, the spritely and commanding Lulu Peyraud is perhaps the most noteworthy. A second-generation proprietor of Provence's noted vineyard Domaine Tempier, and producer of some of the region's best wines and meals, Lulu has for over 50 years been Provence's best-kept secret. Mother of seven, Lulu still owns and operates Domaine Tempier with her family, serving up wit and warmth with remarkable food year-round at the vineyard. Hosting a parade of American tastemakers like Alice Waters, Paul Bertolli, Gerald Asher, Paula Wolfert, and Kermit Lynch through the years, Lulu has willingly shared her sweeping culinary knowledge, wisdom, and resourcefulness with anyone who stopped by. In LULU'S PROVENÇAL TABLE, Olney, who shared an unguarded friendship with Lulu, relays the everyday banter, lessons, and over 150 core recipes that have emerged from her kitchen. Peppered with over 75 photographs, Olney's tribute aptly celebrates the spirit and gifts of this culinary legend.

Richard Olney probably came closer to perfection as a cookbook author than any other American. His books are exquisite models of focus, structure, warmth, and practicality, and his treatment of food and wine somehow manages to be simultaneously perfectly balanced and highly personal. Next to Olney's cookbooks and vinyard monographs, the oevres of James Beard and Julia Child, for example, feel overblown, oversold, and downright sloppy.

Olney's warmhearted incision is the perfect match for the home cooking of Lulu Peyraud. Mm Peyraud is the Marseille native, mother of seven, keystone of the Bandol food and wine community, renowned home cook, and owner-operator of Domaine Tempier, widely considered the finest vinyard of France's Mediterranean coast. Most famously, she is gratefully credited by Alice Waters, Kermit Lynch, Jeremiah Tower, Paul Bertolli, and a host of other American food heirarchs with being their inspiration and touchstone. But for years before America found the simple pleasures of expertly-prepared, highly-local, regional foods, Lulu and Richard were cooking lunches for each other under their respective grape arbors. This book is a broad sample of those meals. In it, Olney documents the preparation, from farm and fish-market to plate, of Mm Peyraud's favorite family meals. Each recipe is presented with notes on ingredients, irregularities and seasonal adjustments in Mm Peyraud's preparations, lucid explanations of techniques, and reminders to keep things loose. The result is a highly-informative glimpse into the regional cuisine that forms the culinary hunge between France and Piedmont-Liguria. This cuisine is one of the world's most satisfying, and I believe that this book is its greatest Testament.

I won't single out any recipes this time. The book is full of stunners from salad to desert. Buy this book and a couple of bottles of Domaine Tempier [a rose and a red, for starters], and serve those wines, chilled Provence-style, with a sampling of these magical dishes. Serve them, if at all possible, under a grape arbor on a hot, sunny day in an ocean breeze. And raise a glass to Lulu and Richard for their generous hospitality.

`Lulu's Provencal Table' by renowned culinary writer and editor, Richard Olney is one of the best works in the very select genre of what might be called `culinary anthropology'. The works I know in this field are few in number but very high in quality and in the rewards for interested readers.

The leading work in this field is certainly `Honey from a Weed' by Patience Gray. Other notable titles are `The Cook and the Gardener' by Amanda Hesser and `The Tuscan Year' by Elizabeth Romer. Befitting Olney's influence, almost all of John Thorne's essays also belong to this tribe of writing. Also befitting this influence, it is Thorne who writes the new introduction to this very substantial work. In this piece, Thorne cites Madeleine Kamman's `When French Women Cook' as another member of this select tribe. I cite this in deference to Thorne's expertise in the area and I hope to review it very soon.

Like my reviewing of `Honey from a Weed', I owned the book for almost a year before I opened it up and I deeply regret my delay, as this is a vicarious culinary pleasure of the first order. The subject / cook / interviewee of the book is Lucie Tempier Peyraud, known to all as `Lulu', the wife of the important French vintner, Lucian Peyraud and co-owner of Domaine Tempier, a vineyard and dwelling `nestled in the hillsides outside the neighboring fishing ports of Bandol and Sanary, some ten miles from Toulon and thirty miles from Marseilles.' Author Olney became friends with the Peyrauds shortly after purchasing a very run-down cottage near Domaine Tempier, before he was the renowned culinary writer he was to become with his books on French cuisine and his editorship of the Time-Life series of books on world cuisines.

Olney was talked into doing this book by another Peyraud friend, Alice Waters, whose Chez Panisse has been a buyer of Peyraud wines for many years. The inspiration for the book is Lulu's great cooking experienced by Olney for decades, and experienced by Waters during frequent trips to Provence on wine testing and purchasing expeditions. In fact, according to Thorne, it was Waters who initiated the project and talked Olney into carrying it to publication.

On the surface, the book may appear to be just another Provencal cookbook, similar to several titles from the likes of Patricia Wells and Lydie Marshall. And, it can be used in this way, but it is much, much more.
The book was built out of interviews by Olney of Lulu as she prepared her various dishes. As Lulu was the consummately instinctive cook, she rarely knew on a conscious level exactly how much of a particular ingredient she uses for most recipes. As one reads Olney's asides on this archeological aspect of the interviews, one senses they are reading the captured essences of an ephemeral form of cooking which arises out of a great love of the art and the ingredients to the cooking.

This is also what makes this such a great `reading' cookbook, yet it is not a culinary memoir with recipes added in here and there, which always play second fiddle to the narrative. Every other recipe offers important hints on general cooking technique such as the suggestion to leave the outer membrane on squid to add to the flavor and to search out the leafy bible tripe from the cow's third stomach, a very delicate addition to the traditional honeycombed tripe from the second stomach. While this is a relatively simple form of cooking, it is not primitive, as many recipes especially the famous French daubes take many hours to prepare, even with the addition of major modern kitchen equipment such as the blender and the food processor, which Lulu and Olney use frequently.

Waters describes Lulu's cuisine as `la cuisine de bonne femme', which may be loosely translated into what Emeril Lagasse labels as `a food of love thing'. This is part of the reason this is both simple, but requiring a great amount of attention. This style of cooking will fail if it gets only half your attention, the other half being spent with Opra, the Knicks and Lakers basketball game, or an errant adolescent not quite old enough to be counted on to stay out of trouble on its own. This means that this book jumps to the top of the list of books I recommend to people who like to read cookbooks. It also jumps to the top of my list as a source for Provencal cooking. Since both author and subject are true to the terroir of coastal Provence, there may be a few recipes, such as the classic nine page long recipe for Bouillabaisse which you will not be able to duplicate as you may simply not be able to get whole rascasses, wrasses, combers, and John Dory's. Scribe Olney is true to his mission of describing how Lulu actually cooks, but he does transpose an aside here and there for us New World suburbanites so we may approximate the classic dishes.

I heartily agree with Thorne when he says that the first sixty pages of the book can easily be left to a later time, as it is largely a `pro forma' recitation of the history of Lulu, Lucian, and their Bandol vineyard. The real action starts on page 61 with `Lulu's Kitchen: Recipes'. This recipe by recipe table of contents demonstrates that this is a really serious cookbook that just happens to be a great culinary read as well. The recipes cover all standard courses and food ingredients, with each and every recipe being a part of Lulu's real cuisine. There are no fillers here, so you will find no bread baking recipes, as it is apparent that Lulu did not bake her own bread.

This is an important culinary book, a superb mix of cookbook and memoir of the Provencal terroir and style. Very highly recommended.
