Book Description
The garbage collectors in Britain are still called dustmen, and Lochdubh's dustman is an abusive drunk named Fergus Macleod. When Fergus is put in charge of a recycling center and dubbed the "environment officer," Constable Hamish Macbeth smells trouble piling up. Sure enough, Fergus becomes a bullying tyrant with his new power, issuing unwarranted fines and blackmailing residents. And when his body is found stuffed in a recycling bin, no one's sorry-including his long-suffering family. But the lawman's inquiries hit a wall when he finds that many wronged residents are strangely reluctant to spread the dirt on the nefarious dustman. And when violence strikes again, Hamish must quickly sift through the litter of lies and dark secrets...before a killer's grime overruns the town.

They are still called dustmen in Britain. Not garbage collectors or sanitation engineers, but dustmen. Lochdubh's (pronounced Lochdoo) dustman, Fergus Wilson, lives in a small, run-down cottage with his wife, Martha, and four children. He's a sour little man given to domestic violence and drinking, and getting by with a one-day work week. No one pays him much attention until Mrs. Freda Fleming, a bullying environmentalist, is elected to Strathbane Council. A politically ambitious woman, Mrs. Fleming decides to make an example out of Lochdubh. She will set up an elaborate recycling center in the village--and its success will bring national attention, including widespread television coverage. She enlists Wilson as her ally (at double his usual salary), gives him a new uniform, a new truck, and sets the plan into action. Power corrupts, and Fergus Wilson becomes a bullying tyrant, issuing fines and enforcing petty rules. When he's found dead, stuffed in a recycling bin, no one is sorry, including his long-suffering family . . . and the victims of his blackmailing rackets. While Hamish Macbeth is investigating the murder, he is also coping with new edicts from Mrs. Fleming, his lazy new constable, and labor trouble at the brand new oceanfront hotel.

THANK GOODNESS THIS AUTHOR STAYS ON KEY........2007-07-19
I must admit to being rather addicted to the "cozy mystery" genre. They are a source of relaxation for me. These, the Hamish Macbeth series by M.C. Beaton, are some of my favorites. As other reviewers have pointed out, each of the twenty or more books are much the same. Same plot, same characters, same locations, etc. etc. That is okay though. I find this rather comforting. The various characters in Beaton's stories sort of become friends as you keep reading her books and this is always nice.
With this offering, Beaton again delivers her large cast of quirky (and some not so quirky)folks who live in N. Scotland. This time we have a rather nasty "wee man" who happens to be the village trash collector. Through circumstances not of his doing, the village dustman is given a great amount of power, and naturally becomes quite a hated man in the local area. Needless to say, he turns up dead in one of his own dust bins. There are two nicely done murders in this one and for our hero, Hamish MacBeth, a very long list of likely suspects, in this case, most of the village.
As with her other novels in this series, we are treated to a fimiliar cast of characters, some interesting twists, and a wee bit of dark humor thrown in for good measure. Hamish's love life remaina about the same..i.e. he is still clueless.
As with her other novels, I enjoy this authors discription of the country side, food and people. She is a very good story teller and this is just the sort of work you need to read to sort of wind down. I do recommend it highly.
Can Hamish Stand Success?.......2007-05-18
Due to his remarkable work in Death of an Addict, Hamish once again finds himself promoted to sergeant. Having been totally driven crazy by Willie Lamont's cleaning when Hamish was a sergeant before, he had hoped that this promotion wouldn't mean having another police constable assigned to live and work with him. No such luck!
Clarry Graham, the new constable, is equally obsessed . . . but with cooking. So Hamish eats better than ever in this book.
Lochdubh finds itself under attack due to the publicity-seeking lust of Mrs. Freda Fleming, a recent widow, who wants a place to "clean up" so she can appear on the telly. Although she lives in Strathbane (which could use a good clean up), Freda decides that she's more likely to have a visible success in a smaller place. An inspection by Freda finds trash overflowing after a church fete. No problem! Freda will create an army of one, Fergus Macleod, the local dustman (UK speak for trash collector), to create the new "green" Lochdubh.
Fergus is an angry man. He started off as an accountant, but his weakness for preying on others caused him to descend into drink and wife-beating. With his raise in pay, wider authority, and military-like new uniform, he's ready to settle old scores with those who don't respect a mere dustman.
Before the tensions can rise too far, someone disposes of Fergus. While he disappears (to be later found in the Currie sisters' trash bin), Clarry decides to become the defender of Martha Macleod and her children from the brutal Fergus. Naturally, that means Detective Chief Inspector Blair will want to finger Clarry for the murder. But Blair has a surprise awaiting him.
After Fergus is found dead, the neighbors help Martha clean out his things. In the process, they accidentally find a lot of filthy papers that Fergus appears to have dug out of the trash. On reading those papers, Hamish realizes that Fergus may also have been blackmailing the villagers (a theme that was used before in Death of a Maid).
Lochdubh is in an uproar for another reason: the Lochdubh Hotel is reopening and the locals are getting great job offers. How will the Tommel Castle Hotel survive? Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, Hamish's former "unofficial" fiancée, is back to deal with the threat and playing her usual role of brilliant Watson.
Before long, the number of suspects is growing faster than Hamish can check them all out. When one of the suspects makes a run for it, Hamish takes action . . . with plot-shaking consequences.
As usual, Hamish finds himself chastened more for doing his duty than appreciated. There's also upsetting news about DI Chater. Fortunately for Hamish, he has his new dog, Lugs (his Christmas present in A Highland Christmas), to comfort him.
This story doesn't have the easy charm of A Highland Christmas or the character-developing strength of Death of an Addict or an intriguing plot like Death of a Scriptwriter, but in its own soap-opera-like way, Death of a Dustman cleans up. Enjoy!
Quick enjoyable read.......2007-01-03
This is a humorous and enjoyable murder mystery. The characters are well presented and keep your attention, especially Hamish Macbeth's new constable, and gourmet cook, Clarry Graham. Ms. Beaton quickly builds enmity for the politically ambitious Freda Fleming, and her description of the peevish dustman and his lugubrious family life are described in detail, so that the reader is not overly disturbed at his death. This was a very pleasant and quick read. I enjoyed this well enough to get other titles in the Hamish MacBeth series.
left in the dust.......2005-09-20
I never received the book due to some disagreement between the two of you. I am expecting a refund on my charge. Amazon emailed me that there would be a refund but as yet I have no seen one. Thank you, Susan Girard
Woe to those who commit murder in and around Lochdubh!.......2004-03-25
This is a great installment in the Hamish Macbeth series. This series continues to delight and surprise and I always can't wait to read the next one. In this one a rather unsavoury dustman (garbage men are still called dustmen in Britain), is found dead in one of his refuse bins. No one in Lochdubh is really sorry because this man was not well-liked by anyone in the village. But Hamish has to set out to find the murderer, especially after another body is found. Once he begins investigating he finds there are more suspects than he knows what to do with, but he continues in his very unorthodox way to try to put the pieces together. There is a scene in the book with a helicopter and a hammer thrower that is absolutely hilarious. Ms. Beaton is a master of black comedy, and her Hamish is the most likeable sleuth out there. He's so real that he leaps off the page. I love this series!

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Why editors have a job........2007-02-09
I hate to bash someone attempting to be creative, but this book has a few serious problems. First, I like to say I really wanted to like this book- it has a cool name, a cool cover, a cool premise. In all a good idea for a story. But that is where it ends- the book badly needs an editor to clean up the typos, grammar errors and odd sentence structures. Things like- walking along in a wasteland, coming across a "truck" and driving away after it has been sitting for 200 years- give me a break! I mean suspension of disbelief I can do but come on! You let your car sit for a year and talk to me! Spear you released a book that is unfinished! Take another look at it, clean it up. The story has places it can go! Hope your next one is cleaner!
Wow, serious Amateur Hour.......2006-05-11
If ever there was a typo-ridden, poorly written book that was self-published, this is it. Typos on every page, grammatical errors on every page, did anyone proof read this piece of junk? Mr. Spear's problem is basically that he doesn't know how to write. Since he purports to be an author, I would figure that is a problem.
Specifically about the story, I guess that is does occur 100 years or so after WWIII, but who cares? This story has so little to do with rebuilding civilization, the issues relating to that or anything else relating to a post-holocaust world and the challenges it brings on. It is a shoot-em-up combat book for the most part with the post-holocaust aspect being merely a poorly constructed backdrop. The author spent 7 years in the US military, so I guess that's all he knows, and it shows.
There are many fine books about life after the ultimate nuclear war to end all wars, or even life after some cataclysmic natural disaster, and they examine what life is really like for the survivors...how they live, interact, cope, defend themselves, raise families, etc. How do they rebuild civilization? How do they police themselves? Who is in charge? Anyone who has read The Stand or The Last Ship or Alas, Babylon or Lucifer's Hammer or any of the other fine post-apocalyptic books know's what I am talking about.
My opinion is that lacking serious editing and improvement from the typo-ridden, grammatically inferior, third grade level of the book, Apocalypse Warrior is a colossal waste of your time and valuable paper that could be put to better use.
Waiting for second book.......2004-09-07
I really enjoyed Apocalypse Warrior, First Book of the Aftermath Series. It had an interesting take on post global nuclear war civilization.
End-of-World books rock!.......2004-05-18
Apocalypse Warrior takes place about a two hundred years after WWIII destroys much of the planet in a nuclear war and the descendants of the survivors have long since emerged from their bunkers to rebuild their world. Taking place in the Arizona wilderness, this is a fast moving and insightful story about one man's rise from rookie to leadership of the new United States of America.
The author, an Arizona resident, has done an admirable job of capturing the flavor of life in the southwest as his well written characters struggle against all odds to not only survive, but advance the reformation of their new nation. If you like End-of-world stories then this book is for you.
Great Book.......2004-01-25
A great, fast-paced book that keeps you riveted.

Real Milk Returns.......2007-10-01
Schmid very carefully tells the history of milk and once you are informed you will be sickened by current "legal" dairy practices. If you have ever driven by large dairies (especially in Idaho) and inhaled the stink of confined cows and observed the mud and filth they live in this book is a must read. Rock on "Real Milk".
milk.......2007-09-10
This is a fully satisfactory product full of no nonsense information about milk and the politics of its manufacture and distribtion. Anyone interested in nutrition should read this book
Great information.......2007-05-11
This information will change your life. We were already drinking raw milk, but this gave me all the extra ammunition I need for when I'm questioned about it. After reading this, you won't want to buy processed foods, processed milk, or eat at most fast food places. You'll want to make a difference in our food supply.
I enjoyed reading it. He had tons of footnotes/bibliographies.
Raw milk used to be used to heal people. Now we have to fight to get raw milk, because others in power are keeping us from getting it.
Biased and messy, but interesting.......2007-04-11
The book contains a wealth of information about milk's history, clinical studies involving milk, cholesterol, and the food industry & factory farming. However it's difficult for me to trust the information wholeheartedly because of the text's biased, anecdotal nature. Additionally, many highly debatable "facts" are presented with no formal citation, such as "a number of alternative medical practitioners, including myself, have found that raw milk has greatly benefited their immunocompromised patients."
Ron's bias permeates nearly every part of the book. In Chapter 16, his description of a Salmonella outbreak blamed on raw milk from California's Alta Dena Dairy quickly devolves into a diatribe, concluding with "The point is that people need and have a right to choose carefully produced raw dairy products despite the fact that contamination may occasionally occur."
Ron could have put more effort into presenting the information. The book contains hundreds of typographical errors, and many times the text rambles and repeats itself. I found it hard to follow, and many of the chapters seemed arbitrarily divided, and placed in a strange order. Some large sections, such as the cholesterol chapter (ch.10), are little more than summaries of a single other book or publication, containing mostly excerpts from that source.
Again, I think this book contains a lot of important information about milk. However it needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I urge Ron to revise the book to rewrite or remove the biased, anecdotal writing.
finally the truth.......2007-03-08
Whenever the truth is releaved it always rings true in your heart. This is what one feels when reading this book. I Loved it......I cant wait to try "Raw Milk".........

As a fan of Americana and good, home-cooked meals, I was looking for a book like this for a while, and found it here. Almost any well-known American meal/sidedish/dessert is included in the 200 recipes, and the fact that the author has tried to make them low in fat is even better. Each recipe also includes a small paragraph of extra information, which is interesting to read.
