Kathryn Ardleigh and her husband, Charles, are called on for help when scandal threatens Jennie Jerome Churchill. Her son Winston's political future is jeopardized by someone who claims to have proof that his father was none other than the notorious Jack the Ripper...
Praise for Robin Paige's Victorian Mysteries: "I read it with enjoyment."-- Anne Perry
Customer Reviews:
Loved it.......2006-06-29
This is one of my favorite books in the series. So what if the Jack the Ripper angle wasn't historically accurate. This book is FICTION. I enjoyed it. It's a wonderful mystery. This series and Emily Brightwell's Mrs. Jeffries series are my favorite in the Victorian England genre.
The settings are intriguing, the characters are colorful, and I love Charles Sheridan's cryptic telegram exchange toward the end.
I highly recommend this series if you like murder mysteries set in Victorian England.
Not their best.......2006-02-01
I usually love books by Robin Paige (Susan and Bill Albert), but this one just couldn't hold my interest. It might have been too reliant on historical characters and made-up additions to their life (and since they can't "solve" (even really add) anything here, its just one more theory to add to an already over-used topic). I also think its a much better story when Kate and Charles investiagte together throughout the story...while I like the realism of Charles trying to keep Kate out of a gruesome plot (and having her stand up for her right to do so makes the rest of the novels better when he always incldues her), it just wasn't as enjoyable. While anyone who has read the entire series should pick this one up, its only good as part of the entire series. Their other books could be stand-alones. Definitely don't start here - you'll miss their other wonderful books!
Historical tripe.......2005-12-02
I've enjoyed the other books in the series, but this one was very disappointing. The authors seem to have relied on lurid, sensational gossip to flesh out their story. A "penny dreadful" of the worst sort.
A Blackmailer Flies With the Pigeons.......2005-06-06
The husband and wife team who write under the name of Robin Paige have been very successful at weaving real historical characters into this series. The additions of people like Rudyard Kipling into their stories have helped to make lively and interesting mysteries into superb mysteries. On this occasion however, the authors seem to have overreached. In the previous books of this series some of the people were real but the crimes were purely fictional. In this book however, Lord and Lady Sheridan were on the trail of the all too real Jack the Ripper. Unfortunately the authors took a detour down a path paved with a ridiculous theory based on a conspiracy that supposedly reached to the highest levels of the British government. The theory that they allowed themselves to be taken in by has been thoroughly dismissed by all reputable historians and makes assumptions about Masonic ritual that have no basis in fact. Furthermore, this idea of a vast conspiracy was apparently given birth because of the rantings of the artist Walter Sickert whose personality itself is enough to give pause to anyone who would take his word at face value. In fact, Patricia Cornwell in a recent book has made a fairly convincing argument that Sickert himself was Jack the Ripper.
Aside from their sad attempt at solving a real crime, the authors have done another wonderful job of bringing Victorian England to life. While reading this book one can almost feel the damp fog and smell the burning coal. Add to that the presence of Jennie Churchill and her son Winston and one almost has to start humming "God Save the Queen."
There is of course a fictional mystery to be solved and it grows out of the above-mentioned Ripper theory. This mystery involves blackmail and eventually a murder where the victim very appropriately falls face first into a meat pie. It is Lady Churchill who is being blackmailed and she is beside herself because of the damage the accusation in question could do to her son's career. A career that he is just ready to launch if he can come up with a thousand pounds to pay off the managers of the Tory Party. To add a little more seasoning to the pot, Mrs. Pratt's late husband show up at Bishop's Keep and starts making demands of his wife.
Except for the faulty premise on which much of this book is based and for which a rating deduction must be made, this is another winning entry in this series. This is a fun book to read and the writing is clear, crisp and wonderfully descriptive. The characters are well thought out and are presented in a very engaging manner that gives the reader the impression that they really know these people. With that in mind I must say that I was a little disappointed to find that some of the staff at Bishop's Keep had left for other jobs. If the authors are going to make their readers care for their characters the least they could do is keep them in the story.
Couldn't Finish It.......2003-05-04
The earlier books in the series that I've read I've certainly enjoyed. I didn't finish this one because I've read more reputable Ripper books (THE COMPLETE JACK THE RIPPER by Donald Rumbelow [1975] and THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF JACK THE RIPPER by Philip Sugden [revised 1995 edition]) than the one the authors read. Their use of Stephen Knight's version became too aggravating for me. I wish they'd done more research before writing this novel.
However, if you don't know much about Jack the Ripper, or you are more willing to overlook the plot than I am, you should find this an entertaining book. I did care enough about the subplot involving the Sheridans' housekeeper to dip into the last chapters to see how that turned out.

Where was the editor?.......2005-08-22
This book was edited by Hienlein's wife, Virginia. If you have read Tramp Royale, you will already have seen that Virginia seemed to be a vain and foolish woman, dull witted at best. This book certainly affirms the dull witted concept. It is overly catagorized, with many sub-catagories containing only one fragment of a letter. As a result, a striaght through reading jerks you all over the calender and back again in the space of a few pages. Very annoying. This would have been a far better book if the fragments had been presented in the order they were written.
a disservice to his legacy.......2005-03-06
Only the most die hard Heinlein fans would want to read this. On the other hand, I think most die hard Heinlein fans who read it will wish they hadn't. This is not good, and is a disservice to his legacy.
Heinlein's thoughts, poorly edited.......2004-04-17
This collection of Robert Heinlein's letters would be very interesting if they were not cut into small chunks and arranged in a non-threatening manner. Heinlein struggled in the early years, working hard for recognition, trying to please indifferent editors, and this book documents that struggle. But nearly every letter is edited heavily, abruptly ended just as Heinlein gets going. The overall picture is fractured, leaving the reader to guess about the missing contents.
But the book is still worth a look. It provides a behind-the-scenes view of writing science fiction in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, showing how the field grew from stories about rocket ships to social commentary. Heinlein rode the wave from short story writer to literary author, and these letters show that progression. Unfortunately, the editing removes too much of the story. The editor did make one good move, however --- she devoted two chapters to letters about Stranger in a Strange Land. The background on this seminal sci-fi novel is interesting. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the history of science fiction. Other readers may be disappointed.
From the Artist Who Hated His Work Being Called 'Art'.......2002-07-13
Beginning writers are advised to 'write what you know'. But if you're a writer of science fiction, where the environment is necessarily something different from the everyday world of now, how can you do this? For those who have read Heinlein's fiction, this book will provide some insights into just how this feat is accomplished. Within these pages you will find the genesis of:
The detailed space-suits of Have Spacesuit, Will Travel from his period of engineering research work on high altitude pressure suits during WWII.
How to build plumbing, bomb shelters, and move boulders from his work on his Colorado Springs house (Farnham's Freehold).
The marvelous characters of the cats that appeared in Door into Summer and The Cat Who Walks Through Walls from the cats that at various times in his life were co-owners of his habitats.
The knowledge of fencing so evident in Glory Road from his time on the fencing team at Annapolis, and the entire cadet experience that became part of the 'Lazy Man' episode of Time Enough for Love.
These are just a few of the examples of where incidents in Heinlein's life became part of his fiction, giving it that 'true to life' feel so common in his works and so rarely found in other SF writers of his generation. But this book is not a well laid out autobiography, but rather a collection of his letters to various people, mainly his literary agent, and often the items described above are included as an aside to the main subject of the letters.
Most of the material concerns itself with the details of how each of his stories was generated, the arguments he had with various editors (especially a certain one at Scribners), his working habits and the problems that prevented him from working at various times. For the Heinlein scholar or fan, this is a gold mine, providing much insight into almost all of his work. And Heinlein's own character shines through these letters, a proud, patriotic, self-disciplined, stubborn, highly opinionated, occasionally abrasive man who knew the worth of his labor and his effect on literally millions of his readers.
The letters are organized by theme (Beginnings, Juvenile Novels, Adult Novels, Travel, Fan Mail, Building, etc) and this easily allows the reader to see the progression of ideas and events within each of these subjects. But it has a downside in that items referenced in, say, the Building section have direct impacts on his writing schedule for a book covered in the Juvenile Novels section. Sometimes these relationships, while important, are not obvious to the reader due to this structure. After reading this book twice, and seeing just how much this type of thing occurs, I think I would have preferred having the letters organized in pure chronological order.
This is not a book for someone who has not read at least a few of Heinlein's fiction works, as the material will hold little interest other than some points on how the publishing industry works and just how this particular writer worked (which is not the writing class recommended method). But for those who, like myself, have read all or most of his works, this book can add a richness of background to his fiction works, a sense of 'growing closer' to the man who many call the greatest writer of science fiction, ever.
More than mere grumbling..........2001-10-01
Of course it's true that we can never really know another person, certainly not someone whom we've never met, but one way of getting at least a glimpse of another's inner workings is to get a peek at their personal correspondence.
GRUMBLES FROM THE GRAVE is not only a collection of renowed science-fiction author Robert Heinlein's letters, but a look at most of his work, with input from his widow Virginia. There are also plenty of photos and reproductions of cover art from many of his novels.
Another brilliant and beloved science fiction writer, the late Isaac Asimov, wrote in his book A MEMOIR that he thought that GRUMBLES shouldn't have been published because it showed a "meaness of spirit" in Heinlein...
Heinlein comes out looking like a conscientious, caring man, so I truly have no idea what the good Dr. Asimov meant.
Especially entertaining was the in-depth look at the decade-long
birth of Heinlein's masterpiece, STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND, and reading Heinlein's short work "I Believe".
Nice book.

Complicated Cooking.......2007-09-08
I am a big fan of Dr. Ornish and his vegetarian approach to treating and preventing heart disease. When I am trying a new recipe I surround it with simple additions so I can concentrate on the new fare, especially if it includes alot of ingredients. Most of the meal plans in this book are complicated, requiring alot of ingredients for each new item on the menu for that meal. I could not successfully use this book as written, except to try one item at a time.
How many books now?.......2007-05-08
With all the books and tapes this author has produced how did he have the time to research them. Like All fads he has passed already.
Simple techniques of eating well.......2007-04-01
The author's simple techniques of eating well are outlines and recipes are provided that are simple and excellent.
Dr. Ornish's Reversing Coronary Artery Disease.......2007-01-09
I've been in tune with Dr. Ornish since about 1997. I had 3 bypasses at that time. Using his simple techniques of eating well (and a lot), moderate exercise and relaxation techniques, I lost 120lbs. in 6 months and kept it off! This man is world renowned in his field and has yet to have any peers. That's right. This is the man that made Dr. Atkins look foolish in a debate on PBS! Dr. Ornish, thank you!
Eat great with no guilt.......2006-02-25
In order for this book to make sense you need to read Dr. Ornish's other book (Eat More, Weigh Less). This book is full of great food that is simple to prepare and very healthy. You won't miss the stuff you leave out.

This book has started me on the path to better eating..........2002-05-28
I lowered my cholesterol from 290 to 246 after using the recipes in this book for 2 months. It has really helped me out tremendously, I just feel better. The recipes are quite tasty and easy to follow. My favorites so far are the black bean soup, the 2-bean enchiladas, and the Apple crisp. I like the fact that the recipes are separated by the seasons as it makes it easier to know where to look when I want to make something for a hot summer day, or cold winter day. I highly recommend this book if you need to change your eating habits to a more healthy option!
This is the book that finally got me cooking........1998-02-25
I'm a total beginner in the kitchen and I'm glad I found this book. It's so fully of clear, valuable information, that the recipes seem almost a bonus. The only problem I have is remembering everything I read and it's sometimes a little hard to locate it again. I'm not sure the organization by seasons is better than organization by meal or food type, such as soups, entrees, etc. or ingredients, i.e., beans, greens, etc. One thing, despite some of Dr. Ornish's provocative book titles, his integrity comes through and apparently his regime really works. Ask people like Bill Moyers who started following Ornish's program after severe heart problems.
Outstanding and easy to follow!.......1997-10-02
This is my favorite cookbook which I use often. I have given it to friends as a gift and received raves. The program is a great way to live and eat.
best of the best.......1997-06-04
I just bought this book. I have a shelf of vegan/vegetarian cookbooks, and am thrilled to find one with recipes that are practical, easy and above all, flavorful. Have already made five recipes, with great results. I would love to have a software edition, so I can index ingredients for shopping lists--my main bugaboo--I hate making shopping lists! Bon Appetit

Almost a 5 star. .......2007-01-03
In my search to find a slow cooker cook book that does not start off each time with "heat a skillet and braise the meat," this book has a smattering of recipies that meet that test. The one for lime and cilantro chicken is great and there are two for pot roast that have no pre-cooking required and that is my major requirement for a crock pot. I need more cook books like this, the point of a crock pot is not to have to pre cook and this cook book has some recipies that fit the bill.
Not What I was Looking For.......2006-10-01
I had been given a slow cooker a while ago, but could never find good recipes for it. When I thumbed through this book, the pictures and ingredients looked wonderful, so I bought it. What a mistake! These recipes could be made much faster and with the same amount of effort if I didn't even use my slow cooker! If I have to cook everything before I put it in the slow cooker, what exactly is the point? I could cook it using my stove and oven in less time with the same results and effort (something I have successfully tried twice). While the recipes are fairly good in general, this was not at all what I was looking for and to me, it has defeated the purpose of using the slow cooker.
Wonderful introduction to using a slow cooker in your arsenal.......2006-06-04
The approach to the slow cooker in this book is a little different than that which most would expect. Some baked beans, some chili, maybe a stew or pot roast -- it's just a matter of choosing a decent combination of raw stuff to dump into the crock, and coming home to mushy vegetables and tender, though flavorless, meat, right?
Wrong. If you are looking for zero prep and mediocre dishes, find another book. Judith Finlayson attacks the slow cooker not as an alternative to other cooking methods, but as an additional tool for those of us who enjoy the occasional meal with a longer cooking time, but don't want to leave the stove or oven on all day just to use a Dutch oven. She starts by discussing things that must be considered when converting recipes for crock-pot cooking. As she mentions, browning foods in a skillet can enhance the flavor of the final results. Without proper browning, foods prepared in a crock pot can be less flavorful than the original recipes. She discusses differences which allow the enterprising cook to adjust their own recipes for crock-pot cooking, and even mentions some ingredients which do not respond as well to slow cooking methods and gives tips for dealing with them. A book of recipes is good, but the introduction should be considered a manual for crock-pot cooking.
Speaking of recipes, every recipe I've tried from this book has been a smashing success. I've made her French onion soup several times. Her Shepherd's Pie recipe was flavorful and easy, her pulled pork was a delight. I used her shredded chicken as a base for her chicken enchiladas, which far exceeded my expectations regarding what was possible from a slow cooker. The best recipe I've tried so far was the Texas-style chili con carne, which was smoky and hearty, with tender meat and wonderful flavor.
This book tries to balance recipe complexity, preparation time, and quality of results. As mentioned in the introduction, several recipes suggest browning meats or softening vegetables in a skillet to enhance the flavor or texture of the final product. However, there are also suggestions that help to manage the difficulty of preparing these recipes entirely in the morning. Most recipes, especially those with long cooking times, include a clear "Make ahead" sidebar which explains which preparation can be done ahead of time and placed in the crock pot in the morning.
In summary: The introduction is wonderful in itself, serving as an introduction both to the book and to the method of crock-pot cooking. The recipes are diverse, covering a range of cultural dishes, soups, dips, main dishes, and desserts, and serving as an inspiration for those who wish to try coming up with a slow-cooker version of their own low-heat favorites.
One reviewer gave a negative comment about measurements, and cited page 73. Curious, I pulled out my copy and checked -- I cannot find a single mention of barley, which the reviewer claimed that the instructions said to add. As the reviewer stated, water was not mentioned in the ingredients list, but the text does say to "[a]dd beans, bacon and water, barely to cover." This indicates that enough water should be added to barely cover the ingredients in the cooker, and the author can hardly be faulted for not knowing the exact capacity of every slow cooker on the market. I believe that this reviewer's misunderstanding does not justify such a poor rating of a useful book.
The only thing I might suggest for a later edition is a clear indication of estimated preparation time and cooking time at the top of each recipe. The book already gives cooking times (for both high and low settings, if the recipe permits such choice) in the instructions. However, it would be helpful when looking for a recipe in a given situation to be able to more quickly determine cooking and preparation time; adding a note above each recipe would provide such additional assistance.
Very good cookbook.......2006-02-26
The recipes are easy to follow and the ingredients are probably in your pantry already. I think this will be a cookbook to use again and again. Having a slowcooker is a real timesaver. The meats are very tender and flavorful, and cooked thoroughly.
Missing ingredients.......2006-01-04
So far I have not been impressed by this book as either the author or the book's editor have left out key ingredients and quantities in the ingredients list preceeding each recipie!
On page 73 "Saucy Pinto Beans with Chorizo Sausage" calls for adding water and barley in the instructions, but these ingredients and quantities are not provided at all in the ingredients listing. So the cook is left guessing how much of these to add. Not very helpful for a cookbook or when you have based your shopping list on the ingredients list.
This book needs a revision badly or a new publisher.
