Customer Reviews:
I love all of Monica Ferris' books! This is the best so far.......2007-09-20
Excellent cozy reading. I just love this series! This one kept my attention very keenly and I enjoyed watching Betsy unravel the mystery. Very believable. I love all the characters in this series, and it is like visiting with old friends. This is the best one so far in her series (it is the latest one I've read, any way!).
a light mystery.......2007-08-15
I was able to solve the mystery early, but that didn't take away my enjoyment of reading this book. The motive behind the killing was quite interesting.
Multi-layered satisfaction --.......2005-11-07
As a needlework person, I've truly enjoyed the previous books in this series. Compared to this one, however, they're appetizers. This book is so meaty, so inclusive, it's like a huge Medieval tapestry in comparison.
Medieval tapestries usually have one central theme, but if you look carefully around the edges, you'll find numerous little episodes featuring other characters and scenes. So it is with this book. Central to the plot is Betsy Devonshire's needlework store, Crewel World. Since she owns the building that houses her store and her apartment, readers come to feel at home wherever she is. We've also come to know her employees and customers, and several of the local (Excelsior, Minnesota) town folks as well, including the local police persons.
This time, Betsy finds herself in a non-needlework-based mystery. Rather, it's in the field of art; specifically an Art Fair, in which one of the exhibitors is murdered. Artists are all a little nutsy, I think, and while finding it difficult to accept criticism, can also easily find justification for their own motivations in many directions. While Betsy is sorting out the various clues and non-clues, she gets an education into what is-and isn't-`true' art. Chapter 18 should be required reading for anyone with an interest in any of the Arts. It is illuminating, fascinating, and I think, sensible, all at the same time.
Still, however, this is a mystery novel, and I found it excellent on all levels: the writing is engaging, the characters are fully-fleshed out and appealing, while the plot was very realistic. Some erudite folks may have known `who-dun-it' way before the end of the book, but the killer's motivation surely came as a surprise.
Engaging protagonist, interesting setting, good dialog..........2005-06-22
...so why not five stars?
Simply, the "mystery" solved itself far to early in the story. I want to guess about the villain, not be able to finger him half-way through. Because of some fine descriptions of the background against which the tale is told and because there are some red herrings about the murderer's real motive, maybe this is more of a "why-dunnit" than a "who-dunnit".
Still, it was an enjoyable diversion. Various subplots weave through the story and some of the characters, such as the victim's teenaged daughter, come to life in spare, but tremendously evocative descriptions. Kudos to an author who summons stereotypes apparently to help readers look beyond appearance and cliché.
And cheers, too, for taking on arts and crafts beyond the series' "specialty" of needlework. Metal sculpture, wood carving, and the interminable tension between art and craft receive broad play here and offer readers a glimpse at the world of so-called public art.
This was an interesting book and I enjoyed reading it: hence, four stars. But it was not exactly a mystery.
A good mystery of particular interest to hand sewers.......2005-06-18
This is the first book I've read by this author, and I quite enjoyed it, although I've read better mysteries. I found the information about handwork (embroidery of various kinds) informative and interesting -- and not too much or too little.
The plot involves an artist found stabbed to death at a lakeside art fair. The police quickly arrest a teenager who is a likely suspect, given his record, demeanor, and the physical evidence involving cash stolen from the booth. Betsy, who owns a needlework shop, has a reputation for solving crimes, and his parents (unbelievably) unlist her help in proving his innocence. Betsy has a hunch he's innocent and begins investigating the artist and any possible people with a motive to kill him. THis could include the man's estranged wife and even his son -- not to mention various other characters.
The perpetrator was pretty easy to guess, I thought, and it would have been a better book with more red herrings. The charm and cosiness of the characters and setting were sufficient to offset this, at least for me.

Fun, easy technique.......2001-03-20
If you can fold and cut a snowflake, then you can make quilts from this book, with the great photographs showing how to do each step. The section on applique gives good instructions for several different techniques. Good for any level of quilter.
Applique with Folded Cutwork.......2000-04-03
Excellent book with clear instructions. I am a self-taught quilter, and found this book to be extremely helpful and straight-forward. The author walks you through several different hand and machine applique procedures. I am working on the "calandar" quilt, and am enjoying every minute of it!

Victorian Beauties.......2002-11-14
Written ten years ago I feel this is still the quintessential book on Victorian white work, black work and Cutwork. I love the look of cutwork and while I have found easier ways to "fake it" when I really want the item to look fantastic, have the time and ability to devote to creating a high quality product, then I revert to this book. I will be honest; it is not a book for beginner heirloom sewers! But if you know the difference between Cutwork, Hedebo and Broderie Anglaise then you are likely ready for this book!

Kind of weak.......2006-11-14
The Zentraedi sources book, Book Three in the Robotech RPG series, is kind of light on the details. If you plan to have a game with only human characters you only need the first book which has the system and a good amount of data about the setting of the First Robotech War and aftermath. If you plan to have Zentraedi then this is a good book to have but ONLY for that reason. It has page after page of information on Zentraedi Battle Pods, spaceships, equipment, background on major characters, blank character sheets and so on. But unless you plan to have space battles between SDF-1 vs Zentraedi cruisers or maybe humans sneaking onto alien ships or, as I said, players playing Zentraedi roles don't bother with this book. There is only 48 pages.
Also it needed a better editor. For example, on page 39, the landing ship has three whole paragraphs describing it. Then the three paragraphs are repeated word for word. That's space that could have held something else.
A Great Source Book for The Robotech RPG Core Rulebook.......2006-02-26
This book covers alot of material that wasn't included in the first Robotech RPG book, such as the Zentraedi's massive spaceships, (with deck plans) some additional information on Zentraedi mecha, (and of the aliens in general) and some vehicles missed altogether. (Like the Recovery Pod) In addition, a slighty more robust Zentraedi creation guide is given, with character sheets and stats for NPCs. (Like Breetai) GM's who want to include more Zentraedi in their game should get this, otherwise look elsewhere.
Robotech Rgp Book Three : Zentraedi (Rp Series).......2000-03-25
This book is absoluty necesary if you are going to be a Game Masters. With the Deck Plans of all Zentraedi Ships and Cruisers, Stats of the most important Zentraedi Characters of Robotech, the Maps and Diagrams, with all this information you can give your players a complete description of Zentraedi Culture.

inspiring.......2007-10-11
I love this book! It is the best natural approach to cancer I have read. It gives the details you need to recover with diet, and she doesn't try to sell you anything, you can do it all with a juicer. There were two other books I had read that talk about the protein connection to cancer, The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health and Cancer: Curing the Incurable Without Surgery, Chemotherapy, or Radiation, but this one is by far the best. I would, and do recommend it to anyone I know with cancer.
A Cancer Battle Plan.......2007-06-27
This is an excellent book for both cancer victims and their families. Not only does is provide hope to the hopeless, it offers advice on how to support the cancer victim and thier family. It provides some insight into alternative treatment for cancer. It is not intented to give specific protocols or treatment plans. It does however provide resources to help explore the options and offers some idea of what to expect. I recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with cancer.
Another hopeless case helped.......2007-02-26
I, too, was a hopeless case. Diagnosed with breast cancer to the liver almost two years ago. I was told I would live 6 month with no treatment and might extend my life two years with treatment but that the cancer would never go away. A friend suggested this book and it gave me hope. I looked for all the areas I could find hope and believe me anyone diagnosed with a terminal disease needs hope. I did not follow everything in the book but I was able to see that diet and the immune system was going to be an intergral part of my cure. I wouldn't say it holds all the answers, but I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a diagnosis of cancer. She simply shared what she did and how she did it. I did it a little differently, but I have had two normal liver scans. I did do conventional therapy as well as natural therapy and diet, concentrating on building up the immune system. Just remember, your doctor does not have the last word on whether you survive - he makes a diagnosis but you do not have to accept his prognosis.
I would rate this book a "10" if I could.......2007-01-09
This book is worth its weight in gold. Anyone who has been diagnosed with any form of cancer should read this book PRIOR to accepting treatment in the medical world. With the proper cooperation between medical doctors and naturopathy, many people could be healed without enduring the hardship of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Who wouldn't want to avoid that if they could? I have purchased so many copies of this book and handed them out because I believe in what it says, and I know it to be true.
Answer to phil's uneducated rantings. .......2006-09-15
First of all Anne would have died 10 years or more ago if she didn't do what she did. The reason she died was because Conventional medicine damaged her liver to the point that nothing would help. The fact that she got 10 glorious years is a miracle in itself. 2ndly, What rock are you living under. Anne death was publicized. I heard about it right after it happened.
I suggest you read the work of Max Gerson M.D. He stated from the very begining. If the liver is too far gone you cannot heal.
People like you make me so mad. You have no idea what you are talking about and you are turning people away from a real chance for a cure.
This book is absolutly amazing. She is living proof that Gods food can and will heal even the most severly damaged body subjected to the to horrible, damaging and deadly effects of the pharmacutical companies that are just trying to get rich at the expense of our health.

Book review.......2007-09-27
I found the book to be inspiring and filled with facts, information and remedys for healing and healthy living. The 7 day fast, the cleansing and supplements, all made an incredible difference to me and my Mom, who has cancer. I purchased 4 more books and gave them friends and family in hopes they can be inspired to improve their health through life style changes.
Great Book To Help You Detoxify.......2006-02-09
This book gave me HOPE and a plan of action a few months ago, as I have breast cancer that has metastasized throughout my body. The surgeon who diagnosed me suggested that I purchase the book Death And Dying (don't ever believe your doctor, as only God knows His plans for you) but an acquaintance recommended A Cancer Battle Plan Sourcebook as well as the first book, A Cancer Battle Plan. Ann Frahm has been through the worst of it and survived. Now with her plan, combined with only 2 doses of chemo, I'm almost completely cancer free. Again, Ann gave me so much hope, and that's what people need more than anything when they get diagnosed. Since one out of two people are getting cancer, I highly recommend this book to everyone... that way you don't have to scramble to get information if you, your friends, or family get diagnosed. I'm thoroughly convinced that this plan of action could save the large majority of people with cancer, but people just aren't getting their hands on this type of information. Additionally, Dr. Frahm is a great guy who has emailed me with information several times. And, by the way, if you have cancer.... I"M WINNING AND SO WILL YOU!!
In response to "Disappointing,..." from 2003.......2006-01-04
I will be honest, I have not read the book. I just had to respond to the reviewer who was upset that Anne died and that without the walking proof then the author is not credible. "Disappointed" must watch movies but you know what, life does not always have a happy hollywood ending. Cancer is an aggressive disease that ravages the body. You said it yourself that she was able to prolong her death. Read the other reviews, many people have had positive response by following this plan - but there are no guarantees. Her death (albeit from complications) shows this. To claim that there was a guarantee and proof that this plan is the cure-all would be irresponsible. And if nothing else, at the very least, these people have a positive experience while going through the plan and a positive mental outlook can be a very strong medicine.
This book saved my life.......2005-08-23
To correct the above review,Anne Frahm actually died of iron poisoning due to having dozens of blood transfusions from complications resulting from a bone marrow transplant. The reviewer should do their homework before giving such a misinformed review.
After being diagnosed with an extremely rare form of Lympthoma,I read this book and followed the program strictly for five months. In that time I reduced a peach size tumor in my colon to the size of a pea in alittle over a month and in the last month have had all bloodwork, scans, etc come back normal. My oncologists are baffled as I have done no conventional treatment. This program works if you have the discipline to stay with it.
Dr Frahm lays out a plan that just makes common sense.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has cancer or anyone who who doesn't want to get it.
Disappointing, especially after I found out Ann died.......2003-12-31
I bought this book because I liked the other book, A Cancer Battle Plan, so much. However, it must have been right after the first book came out (I really hope it didn't happen BEFORE it came out...) that Anne died. I didn't know she died until I read this book, and I was very disappointed to hear she died. After knowing that, using this book seemed like of pointless. After all, with all they did and all they knew, she still died. Granted she lived longer, but she still died. This book is basically a collection of all the latest and/or most popular alternative therapies out there, which if you have cancer, you have probably already read. Some of it gets a little extreme, with magnet therapy, etc. Will it save your life? Doing all these things will certainly give you something to try, but if you are a cancer patient like me--now with no job due to so called budget cuts (funny no one else got laid off) you might want to spend some hours of the day with those you love and doing things you enjoy. Taking supplements, juices, colonics on a schedule all day long may not be your idea of a new career, and a lot of this book encourages you to do that. My only comfort is, this book costs a lot less than the $3200 that going to their retreat would have cost, and everything they do at the retreat is in there, so buy this book and save yourself $3,200. Dave you sound like a nice guy, but it is hard to make people believe when they don't have the walking proof anymore. Sorry.

Product Description
By the time Anne Frahm found out she had cancer, it had already spread from her breast to her shoulder, ribs, skull and pelvic bone, and had eaten a stress fracture into her spine. Like most victims of the disease, her first response was to pursue all the traditional treatments - surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. But the end result turned out to be just another hopeless prognosis: the disease was still present in her bone marrow. It seemed a matter of time before her 35-year old body would succumb. That's when Anne discovered the connection between cancer and nutrition. Carefully researching the medical basis of her discovery, she formulated a comprehensive nutritional battle plan. Within five weeks of implementing her plan, a balanced program of detoxification and diet, her cancer disappeared without a trace. In a Cancer Battle Plan, Anne shares the strategies that she used to beat cancer. Backed up by the research of more than 30 doctors, nutritionists, and cancer scientists, A Cancer Battle Plan explains: How detoxification and a nutrition based, rebuilding process can help you win your war; How to find a team of doctors and medical professionals that will help you battle most successfully; How to encourage and help someone fighting cancer; How to keep a fighting spirit and maintain morale; Preventative measures you can take to resist cancer and other degenerative diseases.
Book Description
IT STANDS TO REASON THAT IF OUR FOODS ARE NOW LIGHTER AND MORE DYNAMIC, OUR WINES SHOULD BE ALSO.
A longtime champion of the victimized wine consumer, Willie Gluckstern debunks the myths and misinformation surrounding the (allegedly) complex subject of wine. His straightforward advice includes:
- The wines that go BEST with food -- and why.
- A cure for label worship: "There are just as many lousy $60 bottles as $3.99 bottles."
- How to avoid getting ripped off in stores and restaurants.
- How to choose a great wineshop: "Do they know where Italy is?"
- Dreary housekeeping tips, such as storage, decanting, saving opened wine, and "that sulfite thing."
Plus, the straight poop on oak, "the MSG of wine," a few well-chosen words for greedy restaurants and retailers ("Those bastards!"), and an unprecedented expose of mass-market Champagne, including how to find the good stuff by cracking the secret label code.
Irreverent, informative, and controversial, The Wine Avenger is indispensable for beginners as well as enthusiasts.
Customer Reviews:
Good reading........2007-05-20
Very good reading for beginners. This little book will teach you a lot in less than 200 pages. Its strength relays on the tips for picking wine and how to match it with food. The author is very enthusiastic about whites, yes, especially for German whites, but since they are not the most popular or well known, the information turns out to be valuable. If you don't feel confident about what you know, keep this book close and open it any time you have to make a decision. It has a helpful index.
One mistake, though, in page 168. Ceviche is not Mexican, but Peruvian in origin, though it's true that a Proseco, like any other sparkler is good match for it. Most Peruvians eat their ceviche, and their amazing seafood, with beer, when the perfect company is near by: the Blanc de Blancs from Tacama (from Ica, in the southern coast of Peru).
The Wine Avenger is a very accessible book and will be enjoyed by beginners and people who want to avoid a sophisticated vocabulary (i.e. most of us).
Best and most easy to understand book and very witty!.......2006-04-23
This little book is a gem and a real bargain. In a small space it manages to cover the whole gamut of the wine world including European wines. It also cuts through the jargan and delivers what you really need to know in a straightforward and very witty manner.
I own a number of books on wine and if I had to choose between this book and keeping all of the other ones, I would keep this ONE book! It's really that good. It has saved me money in terms of buying good inexpesive wines, increased my enjoyment of wine with food by learning how to pair food and wine correctly. It also gave me the knowledge I needed to discuss wine intelligently with anyone.
This author is NOT out to be politically correct or to make friends in the wine industry. I think the same is true of the restuarant industry because he is very blunt in his criticisms, particularly of over-priced restaurant wine. His use of words along these lines accounts for much of the humor in his writing.
If you know of anyone who has wine as a hobby they will enjoy reading this. If you are intimidated by the world of wine, you wouldn't be after you finish this book. It will also save you money and open up new worlds in terms of differnt types of wine from all over the world.
how to pair wine with food.......2005-12-13
The best aspect of this book is that it tells you in good detail how to pair wine with food. One of the most under-appreciated wines, the German Riesling, is also one of the best food wines, and is an excellent value because it is so un-loved by the popular wine community. This book shows you how to love Riesling and many other inexpensive, food-friendly wines. I first read this book many years ago and still consider it to be the best book I have ever read on wine.
Best wine book ever!.......2005-06-20
This is the best wine book that you will ever find. Gluckstern explains the different wines in a down to earth manner. He is all about drinking wines that taste good, not wines that some overblown critic tells you are good. If you want the real story on wines get this book to help you out!
All you need to shut a wine snob up........2003-09-12
I love Willie, and recommend this book to anyone interested yet intimidated by the world of wine. His whole thesis is that most of us drink our wine with food, and the market is flooded by expensive wines that are almost completely incompatible with the food we eat today. Thus, readers of this book experience a wealth of insight about inexpensive wines that will truly be enjoyable with meals at home or out in restaurants. He explains the often complex world of European wines (most of which continue to represent a better value than their New World counterparts, both in cost and taste), inflicts a mortal wound on the logic of those for whom chardonnay and merlot are the beginning of white and reds everywhere, and generally has a lot of fun presenting his world to the layman. There isn't an ounce of pretension in this book, and because of that, its accessible to everyone, even those who already have a bit of wine knowledge. It should be noted, also, that he's no gifted amateur. He's been in the business for decades, and has written the wine lists at several excellent restaurants. Cheers!
