Customer Reviews:
Long time fan.......2005-03-02
I happened on LifeBlood back when it was first released and havent stopped reading since. This latest edition of the Vampire Files is good, just not as good as the others - Until the end. The last 1/4 of the book is written in true "jack" style with all the tricks of the trade including the wiseacre remarks and
that temper we've all grown to love. I can hardly wait for the next edition!
Another Excellent Addition to the Vampire Files.......2004-03-15
It's good to see P.N. Elrod take The Vampire Files beyond the repetitive plot lines of the first six novels. The last three editions to this series (including Cold Sleep) have been excellent mystery novels that reveal something new about these now familiar and comfortable characters.
Here Jack, our vampire hero, and his partner, Charles Escott, find themselves entangled in not one, but two difficult situations that intersect with explosive results. It also leaves room for Jack to continue to learn grow into his vampiric state. This was a very entertaining and enjoyable novel. I look forward to next installment.
A Solid Entry.......2003-11-09
I love reading P.N. Elrod's Vampire Files series. To me, it's like tuning in to your favorite weekly television program. Her books remind me of the times I used to watch the Untouchables at night as a kid when it came on around midnight. I was the only one awake at that time of night, and I'd sit close to the television and I'd lower the volume I could barely hear it. You get to know the characters and the setting pretty well. Like a good episode, Cold Streets is a solid entry in the series. I thought her last one (Lady Crymsyn) would be tough to follow, but Elrod manages. Character development once again is strong. The way Elrod has her characters speak has you feeling like you're right there - post-prohibition Chicago. I love it!
Cold Streets.......2003-07-06
Continue on with the life of a vampire. Would love to have more people reading Elrod's books.
"The Vampire Files" should be a TV series........2003-05-15
It has the structure of episodic TV. Each novel has a whole adventure story in it involving new people we've never met before, their problems, and eventually a resolution of their problems.
But meanwhile, within each novel, Jack Fleming struggles to become a "better" vampire -- when he's not even sure what it means to be a vampire. He has problems that resolve at the end of the novel into even worse problems yet to come.
Charles Escott, Jack's human partner, struggles to keep his private investigating business going despite Chicago's gangsters and the depression.
Together, they are telling us a tale of two people assimilating trauma and overcoming it. All right, those of you who've read my vampire novels like Those of My Blood know that's what I write, so it's no surprise it's what I prefer to read.
Charles Escott has had his psyche reamed and re-arranged by events -- from the first book where a vampire walks into his office in dire need of blood, to his Dark Sleep where he must confront his past. And Jack wakes up murdered and now a vampire, and must confront the implications of his hypnotic powers and his bloodlust. Every time he thinks he has it all together and stabilized, another case comes along and he learns he really has no clue what being a vampire is all about.
In COLD STREETS - we go with Jack to a whole new level of bloodlust -- learning, feeling, and knowing what it means when a vampire has all his blood drained out of him. Is there anything he won't do to replenish himself? And how can he live with it afterwards? Will his human friends stand by him? Do they know how to administer psychiatric therapy to a nearly catatonic vampire?
It seems to me this series is very much like the TV Series Magnum P.I. -- with Jack Flemming as Magnum and Charles Escott as Higgins. Instead of being set in Hawaii, it's in 1930's Chicago, and instead of being a caretaker of a large house, Charles is the owner of the house and the private eye. But their relationship is very similar.
In COLD STREETS we've come to 1938. I keep wondering what's going to happen when the war comes to America. Will Jack enlist? Will they draft him? Will he dodge the draft and go overseas by himself on his own mission? After all, Charles' family and friends in England are going to need help.
I do hope P. N. Elrod keeps writing these novels. I'm dying to see what she plans to have happen next. I guarantee it won't be what I would write -- but I won't be able to put it down once I get my hands on the next book.
Live Long and Prosper,

Book Description
In 1950, Main Street America-restored by victories in a global war and hopeful for a prosperous and peaceful future--was abruptly traumatized. The sudden prospect of thermonuclear war with the Sovet Union, Senator Joseph McCarthy's vicious anticommmunist crusade, and the beginning of the Korean War all combined to dampen the public mood. In the wake of these events, the Cold War invaded every home and convinced millions of Americans that the liberal establishment created by Franklin Roosevelt and sustained by Harry Truman had betrayed the public trust and placed the nation in mortal peril.
Revealing the intense interplay between foreign policy, domestic politics, and public opinion, Lisle Rose argues that 1950 was a pivotal year for the nation. Thermonuclear terror brought "a clutching fear of mass death" to the forefront of public awareness, even as McCarthy's zealous campaign to root out "subversives" destroyed a sense of national community forged in the Great Depression and World War II. The Korean War, with its dramatic oscillations between victory and defeat, put the finishing touches on the national mood of crisis and hysteria. Drawing upon recently available Russian and Chinese sources, Rose sheds much new light on the aggressive designs of Stalin, Mao, and North Korea's Kim Il Sung in East Asia and places the American reaction to the North Korean invasion in a new and more realistic context.
Rose argues that the convergence of Korea, McCarthy, and the Bomb wounded the nation in ways from which we've never fully recovered. He suggests, in fact, that the convergence may have paved the way for our involvement in Vietnam and, by eroding public trust in and support for government, launched the ultra-Right's campaign to dismantle the foundations of modern American liberalism.
Engagingly written, The Cold War Comes to Main Street is a sophisticated synthesis that cuts to the core of a half-century of postwar national paranoia. It calls into question the assumptions of several generations of scholars about foreign affairs and domestic policies and will force readers to reconsider their assumptions about just when-and how-the nation lost its sense of community, confidence, and civility.

Customer Reviews:
Nice - .Actually the author preface was the best part........2006-08-10
Plot - Ex-general, Kaspar von something, finds himself as ambassador representing the empire in Kislev. His job is to coordinate the war on chaos efforts between the Tsarina and the Emperor. The editorial review says it's about court politics; I guess the guy who wrote it didn't actually read the book. The plot mostly evolves around Kaspar hunting down a serial killer and trying to stop a vicious chaos worshippers design to harm Kislev from within.
The fact that the readers know in advance who's pulling the threads, pretty much ruins it.
Characters - The main character, the ambassador, was convincingly done. Kaspar is an honorable, brave man with just enough dark qualities to balance a rounded character. Most other minor characters surrounding him were nicely done too. I came to like the brave Panther Knight (captain of Kaspar's personal bodyguards), the alcoholic Pavel (coward and a hero), the dual natured manic serial killer, the cynic and brave pharmacist/healer/surgeon, the notorious criminal and his assassin and others.
It's impressive that a writer can bring to life so many memorable and round minor characters.
On the downside the main antagonist was ridiculously flat. It annoyed me that we didn't chance to understand the antagonist motives.
One major disappointment, as a warhammer fan, I thought that a plot involving Kislev politics will include deeper insight to the life of the mysterious and intriguing ice-queen. It didn't, and that's a big miss IMO. Her majesty remains a minor - pretty flat - character (though her role in the events is crucial).
Writing - Professionally done. Nothing brilliant, no memorable dialogs or amazing action scenes (except for an inspiring part, where a rat-catcher is killed by a skaven), but it has good enough flow not to annoy.
Action - Action is important part in Warhammer novels. This book have some nice action scenes, but nothing memorable that we didn't see before.
Summery - A decent read for any warhammer fan, don't expect too much though and you won't be disappointed.
3.5 stars for this omnibus novel.......2006-08-02
this fantasy novel follows a former general-turned-ambassador send to what is loosely modelled on imperial russia (i don't know enough imp. russian history to know how many of the institutions here are indeed pre-soviet) to prepare for the empire's role in a major barbarian/chaos invasion army. the protagonist tends to get mad and scream and threaten a lot when he wants something from someone, a tactic which sometimes produces positive results. i do find the many instances in the novels of he and his knights acting as a private army in various parts of the city and country somewhat odd given his position and role.
despite my obvious complaint above, these are two enjoyable novels. the atmosphere is dark, including the apparatus ofthe allied state (kesliv), with many features readers will associate with soviet russia, correctly or not. there is a great deal of character intrigue and action, a reasonable maturely developed plot, and despite a somewhat anti-climatic and not entirely happy ending, I am glad i took the time to read this.

Book Description
Ambassador Hare served with the American Foreign Service from 1926 to 1966. During his international career, Ambassador Hare witnessed the myriad changes that occurred in world politics since World War II. He observed the turbulent events surrounding the achievement of independence in India and Pakistan, the outbreak of hostilities between Arabs and Jews in Palestine, and the reluctant assumption by the United States of a major role in the Middle East. His involvement in the Arabian Peninsula included negotiating an important air base agreement in Saudi Arabia. During the 1956 Suez War and the Lebanon crisis of 1958, he dealt with the most controversial Arab leader of the time, Gamal Abdel Nasser. At the end of this career, Hare returned to Turkey, where he wrestled with the question of Jupiter missiles in Turkey during the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 and the Cyprus crisis of 1964. Anecdotes, stories, and historical fact combine to form an interesting narrative style throughout the book, providing the reader with a description of the development of American diplomatic involvement in the Middle East. Many photographs illustrate varied aspects of the ambassador's life. Co-published with the Middle East Institute.

Book Description
Sherman Smith saw the most terrible thing happen. At first he tried to forget about it, but soon something inside him started to bother him. He felt nervous for no reason. Sometimes his stomach hurt. He had bad dreams. And he started to feel angry and do mean things, which got him in trouble. Then he met Ms. Maple, who helped him talk about the terrible thing that he had tried to forget. Now Sherman is feeling much better.
This gently told and tenderly illustrated story is for children who have witnessed any kind of violent or traumatic episode, including physical abuse, school or gang violence, accidents, homicide, suicide, and natural disasters such as floods or fire. An afterword by Sasha J. Mudlaff written for parents and other caregivers offers extensive suggestions for helping traumatized children, including a list of other sources that focus on specific events.
Customer Reviews:
Written in a language children can understand! Very helpful!.......2007-08-11
Young children who have witnessed various types of violence or suffered a trauma of any kind can be helped by this book. The book is written in language children understand, using loving animal characters that they can relate to. It shows them that there is hope if they don't lock their feelings inside, and it teaches them to find some caring person to talk to.
Another reason I like this book is because it teaches adults the signs to look for in disturbed children, and what to do to help the children who need counseling.
It's not only a great resource for parents, it's wonderful for professional counselors as well.
Highly recommended. - Betty Dravis, August 2007
How Terrible that We Need This Excellent Book.......2007-05-26
I have not had a chance to use this book yet, but I have read it, along with many books on domestic violence and I think this will prove extraordinarily helpful to children who have witnessed and overheard the terrible things adults are capable of.
This book is stunningly, beautifully wrought, heartbreaking yet perhaps allows for the slightest opening of a door. I believe it can open a dialog when used appropriately.
child trauma.......2007-05-01
This book is a great resource in working with at-risk children who have experienced violence, trauma, loss... Young children need help with learning how to grieve. Parents can also learn what is normal in mourning and bereavement processes. A Terrible Thing Happened is a great story aid for helping young children and their caregivers manages the gamut of feelings and emotions they experience in the midst of emotionally challenging situations. Young children need help and guidance with learning how to express their feelings and regulate their emotions. I would recommend this book to any parent and child/family you know that has been the victim of or experienced violence or trauma.
Awesome book for counselors.......2007-01-11
I recently purchased this book to use in play therapy sessions and have found it to be a great resource! It has helped kids start to open up about a variety of traumatic events they've witnessed or experienced. This book has resulted in kids talking about things who have NEVER talked about their traumas. If you are a child counselor, this is a must have!
Excellent!!.......2005-09-16
Although Holme's work is in the form of a children's book, it can be used in a variety of settings for counselors. I have shared this book with my students at the university level and they have used Holmes's work in a variety of school counseling settings. It is very helpful in that it does not adhere to a specific type of trauma or violence. Excellent!

Great , esay-to-follow Recipes.......2007-06-13
My wife got me hooked on Iron Chef last year, and since then we have both become fans of Bobby Flay.
I purchased this book about 2 months ago, so that I could do more in the kitchen. I'm willing to try, but I need an instruction manual when it comes to cooking. So far, I have tried a fair number of the recipes, including: catfish, crawfish lasagna, pumpkin soup, crab & salmon cakes, reuban sandwhiches, Cubans, white corn porridge with wild mushrooms, spice-rubbed ribeyes, apple & blackberry cobbler and the apple pie. All have turned out very well, and I have made several of the dishes multiple times.
Bobby Flay explains many things that I would not otherwise have known how to do; such as roasting peppers. This may be simple to most of you, but I appreciate the help. Also, his descriptions of the different types of peppers was very helpful as a guide.
I only have two minor complaints, more like suggestions. First, it would be nice to have pictures of all the recipes. Most in fact do have photos, but I am a visual person and it would help me if all the recipes had even a small picture associated with them. Second, I would like to see the directions for some of the garnishes in the photos and the plating" techniques / directions. As I noted, these are minor suggestions, and I may be one of the few people who would appreciate them.
All-in-all a great cookbook. There is plenty in here to keep you busy, and the food is fantastic.
How Well Tested Are These Recipes?.......2006-01-28
OK, I'll admit to making only one of the recipes in this book, Sweet Potato-Chicken Hash with Poached Eggs and Green Chile Hollandaise Sauce (p. 32). You are supposed to make patties out of the hash, but the ingredients don't stick together well enough to form patties. The principal binding ingredient seems to be one tablespoon of honey and I actually increased that to three tablespoons on my second try of this dish. I thought it enhanced the taste without over sweetening, but it didn't help the patty hold together. So I tried frying the hash loose and serving it in serving-sized ramekins with the poached and Hollandaise sauce on top. I also tried roasting the hash in the ramekins. Both tasted OK, but neither has the look or consistency this recipe is supposed to be all about. The recipe involves a fair amount of work, so the lack of reliable results was frustrating.
Nothing bugs me more than recipes that don't work as advertised, but it's possible that there was some variable, unforeseen by the author, that messed it up, such as moistness of the ground meet, the consistency of the brand of honey, or whatever. If anyone has any better luck with this particular recipe, please put that info in a review. In the meantime, I question whether Bobby or his people adequately tested all of the the recipes exactly as written. Many of the dishes have no accompanying photos, which might also raise a red flag about testing.
Not a fan.......2003-02-14
I don't like Bobby Flay, but I have to say the guy knows how to cook! This is a great book, and I enjoy cooking out of it.

tasty reading.......2002-04-19
I have read all of Bobby Flay's cookbooks and made several of the recipes. This is my favorite cookbook. It is so much fun to read and the recipes are so incredibly varied. The recipes are presented well: clearer and more organized than his previous volumes. Julia Moskin, co-author, may be the new ingredient that makes this cookbook so special
