Another great read!!!.......2006-09-15
The second in a series (after Circle of Five), this book is as good as the first. Good thriller that's not overly violent. Love the interaction between the main characters. I caught myself laughing out loud many times. Also enjoyed the newer characters. The Wiccan and herbal info is accurate but not over done. This book is easily enjoyed by pagans and non-pagans. I hope there are many more books in this series!
Charmingly fantastic!.......2004-07-30
Having just recently (like yesterday) finished both of these books in this series I am just waiting for book #3...which was why I came to peek at Amazon and see if it was available yet! This author really creates a visual view of the characters and weaves their relationships together so smoothly that you feel as if you do know them. Makes you a bit envious of their friendships! She speaks with knowledge as she writes and the entire combination is a wonderful blend. Definately a good read!!
Fabulous!.......2004-06-30
Anothing winning entry in the Cass Shipton series! Ms. Riccio shows us a more in depth view of the Wiccan way of life in this novel, but the characters aren't whitewashed -- they struggle with dark thoughts the same as most people do, while always striving to embrace the light. I eagerly await the appearance of book 3 in 2005.
Love it....once again.......2004-02-11
Ms Riccio, I'm soooo hooked on your series with Cass. All the women in your stories are now people I look forward to visiting with. Please keep the books coming. I can't wait for the next one.
It's like finding new friends!.......2003-12-30
I've read both of the Cassandra Shipton novels by Ms. Riccio, and have enjoyed them. It's nice to read about people who act like you do, especially if they're involved in an adventure that you probably won't see in your own lifetime! I have to admit I did feel that both books could have been slightly longer, some of the important parts get tossed off, in my opinion. It seems like the characters who die should be introduced to us earlier, to be made to mean something to us, so that their passing is more devastating. At any rate, I am looking forward to the next installment! www.moonchildiva.com
Book Description
Since 1901, over 5,600 pitchers have toed the rubber in baseball's major leagues. Of them only 369 have won 20 or more games in a single season. (Only 168 of those to win 20 games have been able to repeat the feat, further illustrating how difficult it is to reach that plateau.) Season-by-season, this reference work documents major league 20-game winners from 1901 through the 1996 season (including the Federal League 1914-1915). A brief synopsis of each pitcher's season is provided, along with his complete pitching statistics. Some of the pitchers who won 20 games were all-time greats, but, interestingly, many were journeymen who had one great season. The work also shows the changes in the game, from the deadball era when pitching dominated to the present when the lively ball has made the 20-game winner even rarer than before.
Book Description
On almost every Saturday of the first half of the twentieth century, Gertrude Stein would open her door to the likes of Picasso and Matisse, Hemingway and Fitzgerald, Cocteau and Apollinaire, welcoming them into a salon alive with vivid avant-garde paintings and sparkling intellectual conversation. In Charmed Circle, James R. Mellow has re-created this fascinating world and the complex woman who dominated it. His engaging narrative illuminates Stein's writing-now celebrated along with the work of such literary giants as Joyce and Woolf-including her difficult early periods, which adapted cubism and abstraction to the written word. Rich with detail and insight, it conveys both the serene rhythms of daily life with her devoted partner, Alice B. Toklas, and the radical pulse and dramatic upheavals of her exciting era. Spanning the years from 1903, when Stein first arrived in Paris, to her final days at the end of the Second World War, Charmed Circle is a penetrating and lively account of a writer at the heart of modernity.

Gertrude, Alice and the gang!.......2003-04-18
This book gives one of the best overviews of Gertrude Stein and her crowd! When it first came out almost 30 years ago, I read it and have been hooked on Stein and Alice and Picasso and Hemingway and Anderson and Wilder and on and on. Mellow provides very detailed information about the lives of all these greats and some have criticized him for his almost gossipy, "Entertainment Tonight" style. But what better way to feel a part of this circle of extraordinary people? Had more high school and college English and Art teachers used this book, there would be more readers and fans for this amazing artistic period! Hats off to the publisher for re-issuing this book!

Get to Know Gertrude Stein.......2003-04-01
Mellow introduces the reader to a person and a period of time that makes the book a vacation from our modern world. He introduces us to personalities of the nineteenth and early twentieth century who remain names to most of us. How delightful to attend the parties, hear the gossip, and take part in pre-World War I Paris, with this astonishing woman and her friends whose literature and paintings are recognized the world over.

Awful.......2001-04-20
Trite and boring, this book offers two dimensional characters at best. I couldn't wait to finish and be done with it. Simplistic plot leads to a not so shocking ending (process of elimination anyone?) This one gets used to line the bird cage!
Wonderful story, and yes the ending is a shocker, so if..........2001-03-31
you're faint of heart, perhaps this wouldn't be for you. However, I believed R.Pilcher's recommendation was good enough for me, especially (considering) her sense of reality in each of her novels. Real life isn't always rosey, and bizarre occurrences happen to the best families. I'm not usually stumped, but Ms. Whitnell had me rapidly tearing through this book in order to find out... "who-done-it"... ! If you like stories about young people growing up in England and accept there are some harsh realities to contend with, you'll enjoy this interesting story!
Shocking Part Defined Book For Me.......2000-12-30
I love all books set in England, and this one was no exception, except for the shocker at the end of this book which I really found rather..sick. I usually re-read my favorites, but after I read this one, even though I liked it a lot, I was never able to pick it up and read it again. I identified with the main character, Rachel, because growing up I always felt like she did, on the outside of things looking in. I enjoyed this book a lot but if you are the very prim type, I wouldn't recommend it because this book's shocking ending will offend you. I'm not even the prim type, and I couldn't stomach it! Otherwise, it is a well-written and interesting book.
Like a cozy cup of tea!.......2000-10-26
This is the first book of Ms. Whitnell's that I've read, but it won't be the last. I took it with me on vacation and absolutely devoured it. I am rarely surprised at endings, but Ms. Whitnell managed to do just that, even as she was spinning a wonderful tale. I highly recommend it.
A page turner.......2000-09-24
Even though I read this book a few years ago I have never forgotten the story or the characters. A gentle book and yet a real page turner with a shocking surprise at the end!! I never guessed the final outcome. It is a shame that I find the authors books so hard to come across!!

I was wondering if there will be a sequel to the story. I feel that there could be. Perhaps Julia could come back to America and help her sister Alex run her empire. Alisdar would grow up and also become a part of the empire and also Johnny could help run the British division.

Friends for Life

Download Description
Twenty-seven-year-old Joanna Lyndhurst has no idea what's in store when she decides to celebrate passing her medical boards with a winter holiday on the sunny Caribbean island of Antigua. She goes alone, leaving her lover Sebastian behind in London. In Antigua, she meets a gang of friendly travelers: Lowell Brooks, a judge from Massachusetts, and his lover, Vincent van de Voorst, an art historian from Amsterdam; Cora Louise and Fontaine Ravenel, a mother-daughter team of socialites from Charleston, South Carolina; Merrily Morgenstern, a hard-edged New York banking exec on the prowl for a husband; and Jessica Sutherland, a cheerful Brit who organizes music festivals. The trip surpasses Joanna's expectations as the holiday becomes a tradition; the tight-knit group meets up every December, each trip bringing more adventures. More than one of the women has designs on the eligible Lowell, not realizing the truth of his own private life; Jo meets a handsome stranger who vanishes and reappears when she least expects it; and all the friends grow closer and closer. Yet not one of them is exactly who they seem, and when the first violent murder occurs, the remaining six gather in New York to console each other and get on with their lives. But more tragedy awaits. In a dramatic--and highly suspenseful--conclusion, Joanna discovers the identity of her dark stranger, and finds that some of her friends are not who they seem . . . and that there really may be no such thing as an accident.
Customer Reviews:
silly fun.......2007-02-20
A collection of clicheed and unbelievable characters meets on vacation in the Caribbean. They have so much fun that they regroup in various combinations at various locations around the world... until various members of the group start dying, and the book turns into a convoluted whodunnit.
The plot is leakier than a sieve, and the cast is totally implausible. I almost decided to stop reading half way through, but finished it and quite enjoyed the over-the-top ending!
Charmed Circle.Double Exposure.......2003-03-22
This book was also published in the U.K. under the title "Double Exposure".
Engrossing account of friendships between diverse characters.......1999-07-10
This book had me engrossed from almost the first page. The relationships between diverse characters from different parts of the world who once a year meet for a holiday on an idyllic Caribbean Island.
But all is now what it seems and as the years go by, the friendships grow, but the members of this little group start to die. Are the deaths anything to do with the group, or are they just random?
Carol Smith makes us care for all of these people. The elegant and kind American Judge and his ebullient and altogether charming and brilliant friend. The Southern Lady and her daughter who aren't quite as they seem. The young Doctor, who loves them all and gives encouragement and succour to all who need it, but what about her love life? Young music enthusiast, and orphan, trying t get to the top of her tree and to find real love, but so encroaching on other's relationships. And the upwardly mobile business woman who isn't quite as self contained as she seems.
All of them brought together by the magnetic Vincent and in the end find that friendship can survive almost anything.
This book is one which will have me thinking about the characters and what they might be doing now for days to come.
I thoroughly recommend it to any reader who likes to feel involved in the lives of the characters and especially who love a good whodunit with a twist.
A major disappointment.......1998-10-23
I read Carol Smith's first book, Circle of Friends, and thought her second would be even better. I was sadly disappointed. A murder mystery that is dull and does not even have a murder until over half way through the book is hard to trudge through at best. The plot was thin, the characters weak and tiring. I found myself irritated for even finishing the book. If she tries this again I hope she learns from this major mistake.
Why was this book allowed to be published?.......1998-08-25
I am so annoyed to have wasted my time reading this graceless novel that I feel compelled to alert potential readers to impending banality and completely cliched writing.
From stock, uninvolving characters to clunky prose: "From the very first moment they'd met at the Mill Reef Club, this pair had eyes only for each other. His chiseled Cossack cheekbones and slanting eyes complemented her more Caucasian features..." (I swear I opened the book at random to cite an example.)
This is Carol Smith's second effort and my first meeting. I can only surmise that her first effort was a superlative achievement and paved the way for this amazingly trite secondary effort. Or perhaps, since she is herself a literary agent, she has friends in the right places.
The unmasking of the murderer--the identity of whom is evident in the first one-third of the book--takes place atop the precarious roofline of London's Albert Hall. Gosh, I wonder what happens next?
There is a surfeit of well-written, engrossing novels now available at the bookstore. Don't waste your time with this embarassing clunker.

Befriended by centaurs, the trio find themselves at the forefront of a perilous quest to thwart the efforts of an evil warlock and his army of spiders and strange lava creatures that are intent on domination of Portalia and the portal gateways. Interesting..........2007-03-12
Not that great of a read though. I was expecting a more elevated style of writing that would be similar to Lord of the Rings but this feels more like a children's fantasy book. If that is indeed the case, then buy it for your children, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Highly recommend this fantasy novel.......2006-12-13
Reviewed by Ian McCurley (Teen) for Reader Views (12/06)
The story begins when two Welsh boys, Rhys and Michael, go exploring in Salty's Cave. As they explore the cave, they have no idea that they are about to become part of an extraordinary adventure. With the help of some magic pendants, they are transported into the magical world Portalia. They meet three new friends inside Portalia: Ashley, a girl from Oregon, Lan, a senile old man and Kyrie, a young Centaur. With the help of the Portalians, they must defeat the evil warlock Shangorth. Shangorth commands an army of Graav, lava rock monsters and, using the Spider Gem, controls a gigantic horde of spiders. He also controls the vicious Black Eagles.
The five friends team up with the Centaurs and travel to Forttown where they meet the Pinn Warriors who ride the mighty Fire Eagles. As they reach the town, they find the Warriors burying most of the town's occupants. No one knew exactly what happened, but all suspected that Shangorth was behind it. They are joined by those who escaped and the army of dwarves led by King Swiftaxe. With the Penn infantry and cavalry plus the added bonus of expert Elvin archers with enchanted arrows that could pierce metal, they prepared for a last stand against the approaching army of Shangorth which would soon lay siege to Forttown.
The emphasis of "The Spider Gem" was that the various peoples of Portalia could come together to defeat a common enemy. The author was quite straightforward in getting this point across. Taff Lovesey writes very eloquently and is an overall good story-teller.
This book is a good read for all audiences. Children and adolescents will love the magical world, and adults will enjoy a brand new approach to an age-old topic. Everyone will like the epic battles, creative creatures and colorful story. My favorite parts of the book were the epic siege of Forttown and when the nasty spiders got squished (I personally hate spiders).
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who is interested in fantasy novels. "The Spider Gem" has everything a reader could want. From colorful characters to a spell-binding story, "The Spider Gem" is an overall good book
US and UK teenagers united!.......2006-07-10
As an amateur author myself I sometimes purchase books from new authors. Often I am disappointed but, in the case of The Spider Gem, I have stumbled across the first of a new series of books that I feel will eventually enjoy wider circulation.
The Spider Gem is a fast moving story written in a classic fantasy style but given a strong contemporary feel through the use of modern and believable characters. Essentially aimed at the 'young adult' reader, the series should appeal to female and male readers from age 12 through to adult.
So if you like your fantasy fast moving and entertaining with a dash of realistic characters which you can relate to then this is the one for you.
Well done Mr Lovesey. I'd wish you luck but I don't think you are going to need it.

Excellent Read !!!! Pass it on your teenagers will love it !.......2006-05-18
A friend passed on a copy of The Spider Gem and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this first novel from Taff Lovesey.
The story is fast flowing and ideally pitched to interest teenagers but also with enough depth to keep adults guessing and hooked.
From the author's web page I see that he is writing book two for release during 2006. I for one can't wait.

The Best Cookbook I Own.......2006-06-18
I am a cookbook junkie and I have tons of cookbooks. This one is the best one I own. Every single recipe comes out delicious. The recipes are mostly "comfort food with a twist" and they are excellent. The cookbook is quirky and full of personality and so are the recipes... I haven't made a single one from this book yet that hasn't been just outstanding. [something I don't think I can say about any other cookbook I own....]
Whether you go to the Flying Biscuit Cafe regularly or whether you've never been, you will LOVE these recipes! There isn't a loser in the bunch and they are all mouth watering and interesting.
Loved the cafe, love the book too.......2005-11-18
Marvellous, healthy recipes from the Southern tradition? Impossible? Not at all. Great soups and salads, wonderful biscuits - of course - and magnificent pancakes - but the turkey sausage is best of all. I ate here with great joy in Atlanta, served by its lovely staff, and I have only one quibble wiht the book, writing as an Englishwoman; scones are not sweeter than biscuits! You can make savoury scones, even cheese scones (flavoured wiht sage, or dead plain ones with no sugar (which are actuzally the norm.) But none of this matters. Buy this book and celebrate life.
Praise for the Biscuit.......2005-06-07
Fabulous book, fabulous cafe, fabulous food! Since leaving Decatur in 1999 I haven't had to miss all my favorites - I just make them at home. Oh, the Exceptional Eggs, they are to die for. My kids gobble up the Turkey meatloaf. And, now that I'm in VA, I use my locally grown apples every fall to make a gigantic batch of the Cranberry Apple Butter to give as holiday presents each year - to rave reviews. You'll have to tweak the recipe to yeild much more, but it's very much worth the effort.
Delicious.......2002-03-12
April Moon's cookbook captures the essence of what it means to be nourished by the Flying Biscuit Cafe, an anchor in its neighborhood and the primary reason Atlanta's suburbanites "outside the perimeter" even know where Lake Claire/Candler Park is located.
The recipes for simple, nutritious comfort food all have a delicious twist. Moon even knows what ingredients to combine with collard greens so that my husband, who doesn't otherwise stomach collard greends, relishes each bite.
That she shares her recipes -- yes, even for her famous biscuits, albeit with hesitation -- is a gift to all who no longer live close enough to enjoy the meals AT the cafe, but will for years savor the chance to bring the scents and flavors alive in our own kitchens.
Just like the restaurant!.......2002-01-31
To those of you from Atlanta who have visited the Flying Biscuit Cafe, you will know how fantastic the food is - it's warm, satisfying, and hearty- without being heavy or fatty. The cook book is simply an extention of the cafe - the recipies are easy to follow, discriptive, and taste just like the restaurant. They include all the signature recipies: flying biscuits and roasted potatoes with moon dust as well as ones I've never tried. I would recomend this book to anyone who enjoys cooking warm, satisfying food.
