Book Description
Agatha Christies genius for detective fiction is unparalleled. Her worldwide popularity is phenomenal, her characters engaging, her plots spellbinding. No one knows the human heartor the dark passions that can stop it -- better than Agatha Christie. She is truly the one and only Queen of Crime.

Enjoyable mystery.......2007-02-20
I saw a program on TV about Agatha Christie several weeks ago. It was about her early years, first marriage and disappearance for ten days. She is one of my favorite mystery writers and I hadn't read any of her work in a long time. Asked my daughter to bring a book from the library and she picked this one.
Had never heard of the Beresfords before, but thoroughly enjoyed the story. The ending was unexpected, but I wasn't trying to solve the mystery. I was just enjoying the writing. Few can top Agatha Christie.
I expected it to last a snowy weekend. I read it in one day!
Tommy and Tuppence's Crowning Achievement.......2005-10-13
By the Pricking of My Thumbs marked a wonderful return of Tommy and Tuppence (truly her novel, though) Beresford that captures them as older people but still with all of the charm of the characters they were during the era of the flappers. The big advantage of this chapter in their fictional lives over previous ones is that Agatha Christie does not have them embroiled in a rather weak political/spy drama, naive politics always being a flaw in her writing. This is actually one of better of Christie's mysteries with many wonderfully dark ideas throughout that provide more fun than the usual stock amount of red herrings. This book effectively combines the dark deeds of the author's later books with the sense of fun of the earlier ones which can sometimes be lacking in the later Christies.
Late Christie, Even-Paced Mystery.......2005-01-06
By the Pricking of My Thumbs (1968) marks the penultimate appearance of Tommy and Tuppence Beresford. It is one of the novels which I return to periodically because I find that the novel continues to provide a certain amount of entertainment.
In By the Pricking of My Thumbs, we have less the espionage element that might have characterized their earlier adventures, The Secret Adversary, N or M?, or even possibly Partners in Crime. Instead, this novel represents a novel later in Christie's career in which she began to explore alternative reasons for murder. I am reminded of the sort of ingenuity that Christie utilizes in a late Miss Marple Mystery, Nemesis, written around this same period.
The reader should be aware that this even-paced thriller belongs to the brand of mystery in which the reader will have to sit back and enjoy Tuppence's wanderings with only a mysterious painting as an initial clue. The couple is older and their concerns focus little on employment but on the reasons why a woman has disappeared from a nursing home.
I recommend By the Pricking of Thumbs to people who are looking for something a little different from the genre which ordinarily belongs to Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. While By the Pricking of My Thumbs is not as odd as Endless Night, I would place this work among her works which emphasize subtle yet insistent menace, drawing on the ordinary as a means of hiding past crimes.
Tommy and Tuppence visit Aunt Ada and...........2004-07-10
stumble upon yet another sinister criminal network.
Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, first introduced as young adventures in post WWI England (THE SECRET ADVERSARY) have appeared from time to time as since: as young marrieds (PARTNERS IN CRIME), then as middle aged parents of grown children (M OR N?) and now somewhat older but still active.
The story opens as the Beresfords decide to pay a duty call on Tommy's rather difficult Aunt Ada. Tuppence is banished by the old lady and retreats to the nursing home's sitting room where she meets another old woman, Mrs. Lancaster. The two chat quite happily for a while until the old lady asks Tuppence "Was it your poor child?". Even allowing for the older woman's age and possible senility Tuppence finds the whole thing rather unsettling.
Still weeks pass and the whole matter begins to be forgotten until, while settling Aunt Ada's affairs after her death, Tuppence finds herself again dealing with Mrs. Lancaster. This time though, it is the woman's absence rather than her presence that is disturbing.
Soon Tuppence, in her typical manner, is hot on the trail with Tommy in pursuit, in his typical manner. As always, Albert is there to keep an eye on the pair.
Christie made the decision to age this pair of sleuths more or less in 'real-time', they were in their early to mid twenties in the opening books (written in the mid to late 1920's), mid to late forties during WWII and seem to be about 60 in this 1968 novel. This marks a departure from her treatment of Poirot and Miss Marple who age very little from their first appearance to their last.
It is always good to see this delightful pair and find out what they have been up to. The plot of the novel is very much in keeping with the ones before, and, like all Christie novels the clues are all fairly laid out for the reader to follow. Of course there is the 'Christie twist' at the end that the reader never saw coming. Like many of her later works, this one is rather sinister as opposed to the light hearted romps of her earlier works. Still, I gave this one four stars not five because I felt it dragged a bit at times. Perhaps Tommy and Tuppence would have been more at home in the action packed madcap
adventures of their earlier books despite their advancing years. I know that I would have been.
Bordering on gothic.......2004-05-14
As with Postern of Fate, By the Pricking of My Thumbs ventures torwards the gothic horror genre as Tuppence tries to unravel the mystery of a house depicted in her aunt's painting.

Always Be Ready For The Unexpected.......2005-04-11
An English country village on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors is the setting for a story stretching from the present back to the Second World War and brings two Germans on the trail of a valuable artifact whose existence is unknown to the residents of St. Gilliam.
The comfortable, close, loving natures of the village people are in sharp contrast to the deadly intentions of the two Germans who murder with no thought of remorse and are even suspicious of each other.
My criticisms of this book are: the lack of tension created by revealing the identity of the killers; the "good guys" and "bad guys" are too good and too bad; and, the book's title has been used already by Agatha Christie, tough competition for another author to go up against.
The idea of a stolen priceless icon and how it brings the past and present together in a quiet English village is a good one.

Children's fantasy for all ages.......2005-10-18
I read this book years ago and loved it. A similar start to the Narnia series with children transported to another world, but much more complex and richly drawn. Not only are multiple complex societies presented, she also presents different understandings of what it means to be good and evil. A very satisfying ending, more to it than just the kids come home after saving the day and all is well. I reread it aloud to my young daughter several years after my first reading. She loved it, but it was difficult to read some passages without choking up. Truly a marvelous and under-appreciated classic of fantasy. I am a big fantasy fan. This doesn't have the scope of the current mega-series books by Jordan, Martin, Elliott, etc. but I prefer it to the Narnia books for depth of character, believability, and more nuanced plot, though it does not have Lewis' alagorical foundation. This is one of my primary recommendations to friends considering fantasy or children's fantasy, though it is not always easy to find.
A truly great book - especially for teenagers.......2004-11-21
I first read this book when I was 15 years old and it absolutely captivated me. I read it again 25 years later, and it was just as magical. I have never forgotten the bittersweet ending, and just the other day, picked it up and read the last few pages again, and was filled with emotion. Highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy - this is as rich as Lord of the Rings, in a different fashion.
One of the finest works of fantasy of this century........2004-10-18
Joy Chant's Red Moon and Black Mountain was probably my favorite book as a young adult. Though obscure and woefully under acknowledged, this 'modern day people drop into alien world' saga is the absolute BEST of it's ilk. It combines both mysticism and fantasy, battle and intrigue into an absolutely spellbinding story. I truly think this marvellous work is dismissed by many as being another 'Tolkien lite' but the story is so much, MUCH more. Like Tolkien, Ms. Chant is able to define several rich and varied cultures and do so skillfully in the same book - but that is where the similarity ends! The Hurnei bear very little resemblance to Tolkien's horse peoples - and their culture is, in fact, much more richly detailed (in The Grey Mane of Morning - another of Ms. Chant's books in this universe) than Tolkien's Rohirrim.
There are images and names in this book that I have kept in my heart for more than 30 years. That of Vir'vachal riding her earth colored pony through the earth, of the flame and gold of Dur'chai's coat, the sweet terror Li'vanh Tuvoi feels when he jumps to his death, the beautiful but terrible face of the fallen Prince of Heaven as he sees the little being who has defeated him. The Dancer at his Fountain... The child 'death-eyed'... I have not laid eyes on this book for more than 20 years and STILL I remember these details! This was a story that sang to me, that made me ache and filled me with joy at the same time. Perhaps I am the only person on the planet for whom this book spoke such volumes, but if I can convince another of its worth, another who would hear this story, these peoples, sing as I have, then it is worth the time I take to write this review.
one of the best.......2003-09-12
I am NOT a big fantasy fan, and found the "children in the woods" start a little offputting, but after the first chapter...I was hooked. The "eagles" chapter is one of the best pieces of writing of this kind ever, including Tolkien. This entire book is worth reading and keeping, because you'll read it over and over, for the pure pleasure of it.
If you crossed C.S. Lewis with J.R.R. Tolkien..........2002-08-17
...you might well produce Joy Chant's RED MOON,
BLACK MOUNTAIN. Oliver, Penelope and Nicholas are
three English children drawn by magical power into
another universe, where they have a role to play
in an upcoming war. I very much enjoyed the
quasi-Celtic culture of the Horse People and
Chant's honest picture of the tribalism. Although
the plot slows in places the sweet, strong language
and beautifully realized world she has invented
easily distracted me from this (minor)flaw.
I read this book first as a teen, then returned to
it after nearly twenty years to find my positive
memories of it justified: Recommended to any
intelligent young person or adult.

wonderful.......2006-01-26
this is a wonderful book, for kids and adults alike... loved it.. well worth the price
One of the greats.......2002-10-22
This is a jewel. When I first read it thirty years ago, more than a decade after I'd discovered Tolkien and fantasy fiction, it did not particularly touch me. While it remained in my bookcase, I never revisited it as I have so many other books of that era. How fortunate, then, this rereading.
What Red Moon/Black Mountain gives up to Tolkien in, say, scope and history, it recoups in anthropological richness. Ms Chant thoroughly understands the culture of her peoples and their day-to-day lives in the way that Tolkien knows their languages. At the same time, she gives up nothing at all to C. S. Lewis in the realm of religion and allegory. And she surpasses all fantasy writers I have read in character development. Oliver's journey from child to warrior to something beyond, though stilted at first, takes on the heartbreaking beauty of the best of Cormac McCarthy.
I was puzzled when the great confrontation with the evil one came with 60 pages remaining. But it is those last 60 pages that takes this book from fine fantasy into the realm of fine literature.
Not to be missed!
An Old Favorite.......2001-02-01
My father owned this book in hardcover, and it was one of the first fantasy books I ever read, and still one of my favorites. No one I know has heard of it, and I always recommend it to them. It is thrillingly well-crafted, the characters have real depth and the mythology of the world Joy Chant created is rich, fulfilling, and believable. This book is a definite must-read for anyone who considers themself to be a fantasy fan. Trust me, you will not be disappointed!
Underrated classic fantasy.......2000-02-15
I have been reading science fiction for many years. Most of the time, I do not enjoy pure "fantasy" novels, Tolkien being a major exception. This novel is the other major exception. While not as "deep" in some ways as Tolkien's work, the mythic and archetypal qualities of the characters are just as moving. The writing is superb, as well. This is more than a book for children! Even if you don't usually like fantasy novels, try this one!
Role Models in Fantasy.......2000-01-21
I came across this book in a used book store, and when I finished, I was astounded that I had never run across this author before. As the mother of three sons, I found the lessons of this story about honor, responsibility and commitment to be very valuable. Perhaps it is old-fashioned to want those virtues for your child in today's world, but I intend to try and impart them. This book was as exciting and action filled as any Lloyd Alexander ever wrote, with a bitter-sweet ending highlighting the theme of sacrifice of self for a greater ideal.

The best book I have seen on this subject.........2007-08-16
Although this book is small if you look at the others closely they are full of general health info that is used to bulk them up to (ahem) 'Encyclopedic' proportions. Stop eating all simple sugars including lactose, take some healing herbs, prepare to feel like crap for several weeks while WWIII rages inside your body. Two or three months later you feel amazing!! So far I've lost 20 pounds of fat and only need 6 hours sleep instead of my usual 11. Pretty much a miracle. Try it.
Boring!.......2006-11-03
This book was so dry and so boring. It was very clinical. I was hoping for a list of the sypmtoms of candidiasis and some helpful suggestions on how to control the condition. Most of the book was not helpful or useful to me.
Excellent resource.......2006-08-27
The book is an excellent choice for anyone interest in the subject. I've bought and read 4 books on this subject (Complete Candida Yeast Guidebook by Jeanne Marie Martin, The Candida Albicans Yeast Free Cookbook by Pat Connolly, The Yeast Connection Cookbook by William Crook) but this one is the most conscise and yet it's offering all the answers. Dr. Murray offers a lot of suggestions on the diet and natural supplements that are essential for good health and boosting up an immune system. Medicine alone did not help me but combining the medicine with the diet recommendations found in this book showed results.
I disagree.......2006-07-28
I bought this book since everyone was giving it 5 stars. The first part of the book was o.k., but then, it got into way too much detail. I found the descriptions of the cells, lymphs and technical names for every enzyme pretty boring. I had to make myself finish reading it. Buy it if you want to read every detail of the immune system. If you are like me and need something more basic, look on.
Chronic Candidiasis by Michael Murray.......2005-10-19
This book was easy to read. Information was comprehensive. Instructions were simple to follow. Good organization of steps to follow in order to accomplish the elimination of candida. It's up to the reader to implement them. I recommend this book even if your familiar with this problem.
Book Description
Languedoc-Roussillon is one of the most exciting areas in the wine world, and this is the first illustrated book to explore the terroir, traditions, winemaking practices, and laws of the region. Written by Paul Strang, a leading authority on the subject, it features maps and photographs of each district’s landscape, plus fact boxes that offer a useful guide to climate, soil, and grape varieties.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent guide to the wines of the Languedoc.......2005-02-15
It is rare to find a book devoted to the Languedoc Rousillon region, and rarer to find one devoted to that region's wines. Paul Strang does a great job of explaining the recent changes in the Languedoc wine industry and focuses on the pioneers of excellence in a region known more for its bulk table wine. His commentary is interesting and enlightening. His reviews and simple rating and pricing guides for the top wines of selected producers are easy to understand. His recommendations are rarely disappointing. On a recent tour of the region this book was invaluable. Discovering new producers, different grape varieties and interesting, often excellent wines, made the visit more enjoyable. In a region that produces thousands of different labels of varying quality, this book will help you to avoid disappointment in buying and enjoying Languedoc wines.
Nepotism.......2004-07-06
I think I was the partner of Paul Strong/Strang in his law firm in London. Our partnership meetings, or more correctly dinners, convinced me that here was a man who is so multi talented, that I was embarrassed to be his partner. Although, as memory serves me, he poured more gin than wine down my eager, but inexperienced throat, even some 30 years ago I knew that he was a 'professional' in the region of France that he loved. This region is to the west of the Languedoc-Roussillion area where I have had a home for 12 years, but his analysis of the local wines is 'spot-on' and any newcomer to our area needs to heed his advice. He covers many of the vineyards that I have found, faut de mieux, and I think he understands how the local vigneron are struggling, in this competitive market, to exploit the huge advantages they have in climate, terroir, and centuries of experience, brought up-to-date by modern wine-making expertise from all over the world, both old and new.
finally a book is wonderful wine region.......2002-11-20
For years I have been searching for wine from this region, as the quality is amazing virus the amount that you have to spend. Paul Strang's book clued me into the politics of the region from the Greek and Roman times to now. It was during the Roman times that the natives of Languedoc were known for their "proverbial drunkeness." After reading this, not only do I understand this region better and am planning on visiting as soon as I can, but I am also a much more informed wine consumer. Forget the overpriced Bordeaux's, Paul guides you through some of the best wine for the dollar.
