Book Description
William Collins is very handsome, very polite, and very friendly. His is also dangerous when aroused. Now Collins, a one-time boxer with a lethal "accident" in his past, has broken out of his fourth mental institution and met up with an affable con man and a highly arousing woman, whose plans for him include kidnapping, murder, and much, much worse.
Customer Reviews:
Tight noir plunge into doom.......2004-12-23
After Dark, My Sweet actually seems like a love story, a couple days after it's finished. A wayward one at that too. But Kid Collins and Fay Anderson are star-crossed if there ever was a pair, and Thompson never lets you know, if or when they are ever alligned. Thompson keeps you guessing, about the plot between Uncle Bud, Fay and Kid, about who lives, who dies and why, and just what it is that Kid Collins has been running from for so long. Is he a mental case, or a first class con-man/actor bent on hell. There is a wonderful element of psychological chaos to Thompson's story, and it brought out of me a dimension of compassion and empathy, even as these people bang through life, toward doom.
Powerful and compelling........2004-08-08
The narration in this fascinating gem of a novel is provided by the main character, Collie. Collie is an escaped mental patient and as such he is homeless, friendless and directionless. Quite by chance, he makes the acquaintance of Fay Anderson, a young widow who drinks too much. Fay introduces him to an associate of hers, an ex-cop and two-bit swindler known only as Uncle Bud.
Uncle Bud has plans for a crime which will make all three of them rich. Now Collie may be certifiably insane but he is not stupid. He sees Uncle Bud for what he is and initially steers clear. But because he is attracted to Fay and because he has no place else to go, he changes his mind and, against his better judgement, agrees to become part of their hopelessly doomed scheme.
Reading After Dark, My Sweet is much like watching a train wreck as it unfolds. You want to cover your eyes but you can't. Thompson's writing is just too compelling. He masterfully takes the reader on a relentlessly downward spiral into complete and utter chaos while simultaneously introducing unforseen surprises every step of the way.
This is a great novel. Imbued with a palpable aura of impending, inevitable disaster, it grabs you by the lapels and doesn't let go. Jim Thompson was in top form when he wrote this one. Do yourself a favor and read it.
a fine slice of Jim Thompson's world..........2003-05-27
It seems that Jim Thompson's world of 1950s down-and-outs, alcoholics, criminals, and the mentally disturbed all come together rather nicely in this short novel, 'After Dark, My Sweet'. The story can be encapsulated as: deranged ex-fighter meets alcoholic woman and her criminally minded ex-cop friend, with whom they all embark foolish on a big crime (no spoilers here). As usual Jim Thompson captures perfectly the bleak ambiance, and the characterizations are spot on.
While the book is perfectly fine it is not in the league of the author's best works: 'The Killer Inside Me', 'The Getaway', and 'The Grifters'. All these books are somehow special in terms of pathos, horror or surprise. They are deserved to be called classics. 'After Dark, My Sweet' is not a classic, and I have no idea what the title means (..it has nothing to do with the story).
Bottom line: a worthy read, especially suited for Thompson fans.
not his best, but better than most.......2000-02-12
After Dark, My Sweet is one of the most coherent Thompson novels I've read. Filled with paranoia, booze, hard women, crime & treachery, ADMS is a compact punch that's set on stun. It differs from most Thompson tales in that there are no real throw away chapters. His mental aberrations don't hinder the storytelling, rather they enhance it. It's a short, exciting read that doesn't wander. Thompson didn't always color in the lines, but he sure did with this one. All of the characters are desperate, yet believable. There's Collie, an ex-pugilist & mental patient, Faye, a widowed alcoholic, and Uncle Bud, an ex-cop with no redeeming qualities. The only flaw in their well-planned crime is that they, themselves, are involved. This book reads like a super lightweight fight, you know...the little skinny guys that come out swinging for their lives at the bell and never stop until someone goes down. I've read many Jim Thompson books and I must say that only A Hell Of A Woman, The Killer Inside Me, & Now And On Earth surpass After Dark, My Sweet. A fast read with few flaws is hard to find, but this is certainly one such book. Thompson imitators always fail for one simple reason...they lack the ability to bring an element of genuine insanity to the noir landscape. There are no substitutes & this is one of the master's best efforts. There is also a decent movie adaptation starring Rachel Ward & Jason Patric, as well as Bruce Dern. Read the book first for, while the movie is good, the book is far superior. I am sorry that Jim had to suffer the demons that he did, but I am most thankful for the literary results!
Pure Genius!.......1999-12-24
Trademark Jim Thompson characters and twists. But in this incarnation the formula is twisted and blended into perfection. If you only could read on Jim Thompson novel (which would be a crying shame) I would recommend After Dark my Sweet. Every character is well developed and seems real. The subject matter is still very relevant, not as dated as other Thompson fare like Pop 1280 and South of Heavan.

A thousand years ago, Mageborns fled prejudice and persecution to colonize the planet Lenfell--a perfect refuge for those whose powers were perceived as a threat by people not gifted with magic. But the greater the magic, the greater the peril. Lenfell was soon devastated by a war between rival Mageborn factions that polluted the land with Wild Magic and unleashed hideous specters called Wraithenbeasts. Now, generations later, someone is planning another war on the still crippled planet that will tear three Mageborn sisters apart.
"I am mad (petulant, in fact!) that I can't immediately read book number two in the Exiles trilogy.... Melanie Rawn has established beyond doubt that she is a great writer of fantasy and The Ruins of Ambrai will join the Dragon series in my library of favorites for years to come." --Realms of Fantasy
Customer Reviews:
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Slogged my way through the other series because they were around, but the girly factor in this one was too high to manage to finish. My sister had them, this was the only reason, and unfortunately they did not get any better. Clearly written to appeal to the romance angle I think, which is not my thing. If you like that, and fantasy, this might be a sure thing for you.
Long ans Slow.......2007-07-24
I'm surprised at how high this book is rated. I didn't find it to be a terrible book. The main characters were fairly interesting but I would of thought a book of over eight hundred pages would have alot more going on inside. I found it very slow. Maybe the author knowing she was writing a trilogy was just laying groundwork here but I was not interested enough to purchase the next book.
Don't read this book until the third book comes out!.......2007-03-19
Maybe you are aware that Ms. Rawn has left this series hanging for 10 years now. And counting.
I have just finished reading the Exiles books after 10 years, and think they are even better than the first time I read them.
That being said, I have to admit I am wondering if any author has the sheer talent and skill needed to patch up this convoluted
tale. And have it make any kind of sense.
I also wonder if it's possible to write the sequel and have it mesh after such a long hiatus.
After reading these two books, I have come to realize that Ms. Rawn will have a hard time finishing this story. She has
effectively painted herself into a creative corner. Bear with me a moment.
First and foremost, the story is getting too complicated. Where one or two major groups of families would have sufficed,
there are literally hundreds of names the beleaguered reader has to try to remember. Added to that, layers upon layers of shadings
and meanings behind every word ever uttered by one Gorynel Desse. And with all the names in the two books, I'm not exactly
sure he's the only one. Also, there are tales within tales that boggle the mind. You have the 3 sisters' history and the question of Auvry Feiran's
true reasons for going evil. There was some kind of cover up there. The divorce and all was some kind of fake maneuver to hide some other events.
Also, you have the Ganfallin revolt over 200 years ago that is tied into the current events, plus
the Malerrisi lord and the ancestor of Leninor Garvedian who were in love and tried to revolutionize the magical hierarchy. Or was
it the ancestor of Lusira, Alira Gavennos, Tragan Maifirran - huh? You see what I mean here. Not to even get started on who
actually colonized the planet of Lenfell, who started the Mage wars over a thousand years ago . . . Spaceships, anyone? There is
just too much stuff.
Second, too many characters are aged too rapidly. Cailet is just a young woman at the beginning of book 2 and in 100 or so pages
becomes middle aged, empty hearted and bitter. There is almost no fleshing out of her character. After all the time spent on her
thoughts and feelings in the first book, to be suddenly cheated of her real growth into a woman is astounding. The reader just has
to make the leap and read between her grim faced silences and acid comments to Gorsha. The same goes for Glenin, her doings are
only hinted at,and it would have been nice to get a clearer idea of what made her tick other than rigid adherence to the Malerissi
Code. Why does power mean so much to her? There are issues left unresolved with her at the end of book 1 that are not continued
in book 2, but glossed over. Certainly her relationship with her son would have fleshed out her personality more and made her
eventual choices that much more frustrating and heartbreaking. And the last sister, Sarra, becomes a robot in the service of the
government, missing out on her children's lives and feeling just about as cheated as the reader at having seen it whirl on by so
quickly. It all feels so rushed.
And worst of all is what is done with Collan. Without going into major spoilers here, all I can say is that what we are left with at
the end of book 2 is not enough. Not even close. One page of teasing phrases and almost finished sentences. Just two more words
in the right place would have given so much! Now, the explanations will need to come by way of flashbacks, or visions- if the third
book actually ever gets written. The whole mystery of his true identity is almost given, then tauntingly jerked away.
At last we are left with Ms. Rawn's 10 year and counting hiatus.
Has anyone thought of just writing the darn thing themselves? Anyone? Not even fanfic? Thought not. The truth is that it will take
a lot of talent and brain drain to get the next book to be even halfway coherent and not the total anti-climax mess it probably will be.
In fact, at one point Ms. Rawn called on her readers to help her with it. No joke, the request by her was made on her website and has
since been removed. But I remember my jaw dropping to my shoes when I read it last year. She emphatically stated that a book takes
anywhere between 1 and 5 years for her to write, not to get too exited and please not to tell her our own ideas about who Collan really
is. She just needs some help with, you know, the story and stuff like that.
Doesn't that just say it all? Even she can't keep it all straight and in fact said she needed the help to remember what happened. Having
just finished this, I can see why. Too many names, too much time gone by for both the characters and for the author.
My advice is: Don't read these books until the last book is out. The books are good enough that it is maddening wondering if and when the author
will ever finish it.
Different!.......2007-02-16
The Ruins of Ambrai is the first in what is supposed to be a 3-book series about a futuristic, matriarchal society on Lenfell, a planet colonized by those who had fled prejudice and persecution in the old world (Earth, I'm assuming, or that's how I thought of it). On Lenfell society is divided into classes called Tiers, and at the top of the heap are the Names, or Bloods, extensive family webs headed by women. Those who are born with magick are Mageborn, and as this story begins, Mageborns are slowly being obliterated by their own - a faction of magickal borns who use their magick for ill and known as the dreaded Malerrisi.
The story's protagonists are three Mageborn sisters - Glenin, Sarra and Cailet - who are separated early in childhood by the destruction of their home, Ambrai, and the tearing apart of their family. All three have had Wards put on them to lock their memories so that they don't know who they really are or that they even have sisters, but these blocks soon break down as the last of the dwindling Mageborns and their supporters face down the Malerissi. Glenin, who was taken by her father after the destruction of Ambrai, has had her magic twisted by hate and lust for power. Sarra and Cailet grow up ignorant of who they really are - Sarra, the First Daughter of Maichen Ambrai, and Cailet, the most powerful mageborn in centuries. As the sisters become young women, the escalating violence swirling around them inadvertently brings them face to face, and it's a showdown that sets all three on their individual paths. It's obvious that the sisters each have a destiny to fulfill in their changing world, and at the end of Ruins the reader is left with a feeling of excitement and anticipation at what's to come.
There is a sequel, The Mageborn Traitor, which I plan to read in the next few months. However, the third and final in the series, The Captal's Tower, hasn't yet been written, even though the title has been set for years and even has an ISBN # on Amazon. The author's publisher, DAW, is still waiting for it, as are the fans. Since The Mageborn Traitor was written in 1997, it's now been ten long years and I for one despair of her ever finishing it. I'll stay hopeful, though.
I'm Your Father, Luke! (spoiler).......2006-12-06
Despite the mostly competent writing, this book is at bottom Star Wars restaged in Fantasy land. Nail on Morgan Le Fay and now you pretty much know how everything is going to turn out. Even the Ewoks-around-the-bonfire scene is here (thinly diguised, but it wasn't hard to pick it out!) I didn't have trouble reading the first part of the book, in fact I enjoyed it. Rawn seemed to be working pretty hard to keep interest high and the world she was building was well drawn. Then things changed. The dialog degenerated into a mishmash right out of trashy romance novels (the ones where all the characters speak in the same "witty" voice.) I began to wonder if one author had written a tighter, much smaller book and the publisher then hired a TV sitcom hack to "flesh it out" to epic length. I found myself re-reading previous paragraphs to try to figure out who was speaking (odd paragraphs are "he said", even is "she said") because they had no individual flavors. Towards the end the writing revived in a few sections but by then it was too late. Also annoying were the big holes left in the fabric of the plot (hehe... pun intended.) I guess if you have watched Star Wars, you can supply the reasons why Darth Vader went from good Jedi to bad Empire guy, but I don't think that was a good reason to skip that part in this book. Maybe it's just that Rawn can't write dialog, I don't know... whatever, it would have benefitted this book greatly if she'd skipped the Han Solo/Princess Leia banter and plugged in the motivations for a good deal of the plot line.

It works?.......2007-05-10
I thought the book rather silly but my granddaughter thought otherwise. She desparately wanted to go to pre-school but she had a real issue with the potty training and that was a prerequisite. She felt like a failure at 32 months old. We read this book to her and she seemed incredulous. She did ask to have the book read to her repeatedly. The same week she decided to give the idea a whirl and I do believe we have some success. She would have given the book 5 stars.
cute.......2007-03-26
my daughter loves this book. it shows options for types of potties, and my daughter just got what she got - so that's the only problem. otherwise, she loves it and i love it.
My daughter loves it!.......2007-02-03
We used this book in our daughter's princess themed potty party. She loved it and still is enjoying reading it. I found it very helpful in the potty training process.
Great little book.......2006-08-01
My granddaughter really loves this book as she is going through her "Princess" stage. We have to read it three times a day when she's visiting. However, she still hasn't gone "potty". But we're working on it!!!
The Princess and the Potty.......2006-07-28
This book is hilarious if your daughter is like mine. The Princess refuses to do anything unless it is her idea and in her own time. She is just as independent as my little one. It was a fun read on potty training day.

Customer Reviews:
kid-pleaser for potty trainers (and their siblings).......2006-10-13
My nearly three year old (mostly potty trained but still having accidents) loves this book, and his six year old brother loves reading it to him. They both think it's hilarious, and we always have to read it at least three times in a row. I guess I can understand others' objections to the book, but I watch my little boy easily identifying with the little potty training princess in her quest to master the potty chair. He clearly enjoys watching her journey through the process. As for the ending, it's so easy to add an, "oh well, that's okay", just as you would if your child had an accident.
Illustrations could frighten a toddler.......2004-10-07
I should have heeded the review I read describing the little girl standing in the puddle before I bought the book. The illustrations were frankly, a bit scary, and the author missed the opportunity to reassure the child that everyone has accidents, and that it's OK. Instead, the book just ends, showing the sad and confused child in the puddle. hello! I sent the book back straightaway!
Shows HUMILIATION.......2004-07-13
I bought this book thinking it would be helpful. The princess theme was a good one. But, I am SO GLAD I READ this book BEFORE I gave it to my little one. While it does show the little princess asking for her potty (a good message), it does not show encouragement or making the child feel better after her "accident". It has the poor child standing in a puddle, redfaced, emabrrassed, and with sad eyes. It shows the humiliation a child may feel if it doesn't get to the potty in time. And, may, make her afraid to go without the diaper for fear of not getting there in time. I was appalled. So much that I will not even donate this book or give it away. It is going into the trash.
Is it a cup or a potty?.......2000-06-01
My 21-month-old daughter seems to like the story and that it is a princess learning to use the potty (since she is too), but the potty doesn't look like a potty. She thinks its a cup. Now she wants to take my coffee up to the potty and use it.
Both my children & I love this book!.......2000-02-11
The illustrations are nice. There are only a few words on each page, so it is a quick read. The little princess is really trying, but sometimes you just can't make it to the potty in time & that's okay.
Book Description
The prince will not use his potty, and the king and queen are quite perplexed! They are even more confused when they consult the Royal Wise Man, who tells them to get the prince a puppy. But the wisdom of his words becomes perfectly plain as the prince learns all about using a proper potty from his new pet.

There's Better Out There.......2007-06-30
Even though this book was cute to read I found it dragged, bland and boring. If you want a book that is for child of `potty training' age that is combine with `house breaking' the new puppy then might I suggest, "The Piddle and Piles Series: NOT IN THE HOUSE!" by Peyton Wolfe. It is absolutely awesome!!! The illustrations are fantastic, but the story just blows you away. (Especially for a children's book.) She combines the two together with story, illustrations and song. My two kids loved it! When I started to go through the potty training with my first child my husband and I thought it would be a great idea to get a puppy so that they could grow up together. We have tried my books, but should have bought this one only and saved a ton of money of not buying the rest. It is entertaining and helps our kids become a part of the training process of our family dog. The book help them understand that through pictures, song and story that they have responsibilities to take care of themselves, but to also take care of your pet.
So, to everybody - I wouldn't really buy this book, but if I was you - I WOULD BUY THE OTHER >>>>> "The Piddle and Piles Series: NOT IN THE HOUSE!" by Peyton Wolfe. It really helped me and my husband through it.
