Cold blood and old secrets..........2007-09-13
This was my first Miss Marple mystery but by no means my first Christie book. I have enjoyed the different way in which the sharp mind worked over Hercule Poirot's genius but truth be told, Miss Marple as good as she was didn't appear in the book too often. This was also the time I figured out who the murderer was, more likely because I have read a lot of Agatha and knew her to be a trickster when it came to fooling the reader but also partially due to clues given out fairly this time. The final answer made total sense and there were a few things that were twisted and few truths were new to me but overall it all came together , so those who pay attention can figure it out.
Murder is announced - in deed it is, in a local Gazette that everyone reads in Chipping Cleghorn. When everyone assumes it's some sort of a party they get a huge surprise that a murder does take place and one of the attendees is somehow responsible. I will not give anything else away but the story has a great setting and there are tons of clues. I felt like a grand detective reading all the accounts and enjoyed the old-fashioned talk and mannerisms. The house of Letitia Blacklock has been violated and her closest friends, neighbors and family members are the only ones who could have dipped their fingers in the dark pool of death. Miss Marple enters the book and shines some light on interesting family relations and past that wants to be forgotten with a few unlucky turns for some of the members of the party. When more deaths happen the police know they must act quickly or there won't be anyone left.
The only problem I had with the book was the amount of characters; my head was spinning and I was dizzy trying to gather them all up in my mind. The names were also similar and long some making me a bit batty but overall I enjoyed the book and loved the cozy setting marred with chilling death hiding in the dark corridors of the Blacklock house. I do recommend this but it left me with a bit of a headache at the end and I was anticipating the ending to finally come and bring my brain some relief. Murder is nasty business and Christie knew how to work it to her advantage.

Mystery with a twist.......2006-08-12
Just when you think you knew who did it then wham! A curveball comes in to reveal the true killer. A great read!
A great mystery, one of the best ones ever written!.......2006-01-16
When a personal item in the Chipping Cleghorne Gazette invites people to a murder at the home of Miss Blacklock, they show up to be part of the excitement. However, when a young man suddenly springs in on them with a revolver, and then quickly ends up dead, the party turns out to be anything but entertaining. The police are baffled as to what happened and why, and that leaves only one person who can unravel this mystery - Miss Jane Marple!
Jane Marple was the literary creation of that most famous of English mystery writers, Agatha Christie (1890-1976). For those of you unfamiliar with Miss Marple, she was your stereotypical elderly spinster-lady, who loves to gossip and grow her flowers. But, even more, she has a razor-sharp mind that she uses to solve mysteries, using her own brand of lateral thinking that allows her see clearer than anyone else around her.
This is actually Agatha Christie's fourth Miss Marple novel, written in 1950. (The first one was The Murder at the Vicarage (1930), and the second one was Sleeping Murder, which was written in 1940 but locked away to be published after Ms. Christie's death in 1976.) Overall, I found this to be a fascinating read. If you love a good mystery, then get this book - it is a great mystery, one of the best ones ever written. I give this book my highest recommendations!
"You are cordially invited to a murder at Little Paddocks this evening".......2005-06-28
This announcement in the morning paper was the main topic of discussion in the village, especially at Little Paddocks. No one knew who had placed this absurd announcement, it had to be a joke but at the appointed hour friends and neighbors just happened to drop by....and since this is a Christie novel, a murder did occur.
This 1950 novel is an interesting look at village life in postwar England. The housing shortages, food rationing (and resulting underground trading), the influx of foreigners and the English themselves left uncertain at how to cope with the postwar world. Little Paddocks was a slice of this new world, the owner, Letty Blacklock had opened her home to a childhood friend, two young distant relatives, a boarder and hired a displaced person as a cook/housekeeper.
Fortunately for all concerned Jane Marple was visiting nearby and was soon unraveling all the little village mysteries - just who was the strange man seen around town, why did Miss Blacklock wear those necklaces, how was the victim at Little Paddocks and why was he there and why was there a second murder?
This is one of my favorite novels, as always with Christie the clues are all there but the plot twists and turns so much that it would be a rare reader indeed who could arrive at the answers before Miss Marple reveals all.
An elaborate murder plan........2005-04-30
You'll never meet a murderer prepared to devise a killing as elaborate and risky as occurs here. Indeed, Agatha Christie, the Queen of Crime, who admitted that she had never knowingly met a murderer, creates a dazzlingly daring one in this brilliant little book. Bear in mind that Mrs Christie's aim is to create an old-fashioned murder mystery, intent in baffling and misdirecting the reader who is trying to guess the solution. Don't look for any but a game-playing analysis of a murderer's mind. In addition she adds plenty of charm, she depicts a cozy village community, she displays a shrewd understanding of elderly folk, and she gives Miss Marple free rein to collect gossip in tea shops, kitchens and vicarage drawing rooms and to discern before anyone else that the murderer is .....
Dating from 1950, this is one of Agatha Christie's very best books from her later years. Of all her books, I rank it amongst the top ten. Those who like a good reader to present it should acquire the reading by Rosemary Leach, whose timing, articulation and slightly nasal voice adds additional charm to the story telling.
Book Description
You are cordially invited to a murder. A personal ad in the newspaper inviting strangers to participate in an evening of murder mystery fun and games at the home of Letitia Blacklock is an invitation that Miss Jane Marple cannot pass up. A good thing, too, because when the lights are dimmed real gunshots ring out, killing a young boy. Now it’s time for a new, much more serious game of “whodunit.”

WHO'S WHO ?.......2007-05-12
A MURDER IS ANNOUNCED was published for the first time in 1950. It was adapted for the stage in 1977 by Leslie Darbon :Agatha Christie's "A Murder is Announced" (Adapted for the Stage).
I can't but recommend this book that presents one of the most inventive mysteries ever concocted by Agatha Christie. For once, if you're very careful, it's possible to find the murderer before the last ten pages of the novel because all the clues are given by the smart Lady of the Crime. As always in Agatha Christie novels, light notes about the English social and political climate spreaded all along the chapters allow us to better imagine the everyday life in an English little town some five years after the end of WWII.

Book Description
When an ad appears in the gazette announcing a murder to take place on Friday at Little Paddocks at 6:30 p.m., the locals show up, assuming it's a murder mystery party, only to get shot at and then become witnesses to the real murder of a boy no one knows. Fortunately, Miss Marple arrives and unravels this tangled skein before too many of them get bumped off. Miss Jane Marple doesn't look like your average detective. Quite frankly, she doesn't look like a detective at all. But looks can be deceiving, for the mild-mannered spinster sleuth is as adept at solving murders that baffle Scotland Yard as she is at unravelling village secrets.

Una vez allí comprueban que la noticia del periódico era fidedigna, a la hora indicada se produce un asesinato. Afortunadamente, Miss Marple, de visita en la villa, se encarga de resolver el macabro asunto con su peculiar estilo.

Excellent Book Well Worth Reading........2001-05-09
Christopher Rowley's mastery of the written word is clearly seen once again within this tale. If you enjoy the Bazil Broketail series you might very well enjoy this book too, though set in a different place and time then Broketail it is well worth the reading. The only complaint can be that it ends in a way that leads the reader to believe or to hope that there might be another book in this series, there is an opening too and maybe someday there will be a second book, but until then this is well worth the reading.
Excellent Myth, excellent Bildungsroman for the young reader.......1999-11-25
Well first I think it is plain cheeky to critique a novel if one has yet to write one - not to mention write one succesfully. I notice other reviewers do not suffer from this compunction. Anyway, what a wonderful story. It teaches (without a hint of didactism - the bane of wannabe fantasy novelists) all of the key elements that will shape a Hero and that are so lacking in our X-generation. Self-sacrifice, valor, courage, chivalry, the character of evil and the character of good. Yes, the the 'sophisticated' post-modern reader (many from the haunts of the N-East and California, for some reason) will find this appraisal somehow naive - but then so would Waakzaam the Great. Well, well, for those who have ears to hear, this is a story to read, experience and live if you can! Wonderful reading! Have fun!
I thought it was pretty good book........1999-07-08
It is a good book because it will tell about one of the people that the Broketail will fight in one of his later books. If Rowley had probily not have wrote this book, we the readers, would have probiy be wondering who this person was in the later book, because there was no explanation for him in that book.
Read only if you like _Bazil Broketail_.......1999-04-14
This book wasn't a very good read, but it wasn't terrible, either. It is useful in that it shows the reader more of the Bazil Broketail universe, and fleshes out some of the geography of the region. Reading this book between _Dragon at World's End_ and _Dragons of Argonath_ will help, as the latter book somewhat builds on the _Wizard_ and keeps the same "bad guy". So, while you shouldn't read this as your first Rowley book, it does have its redeeming qualities. Definitly not a stand alone.
Compared to Rowley's other works, this was dissapointing........1999-03-30
On a whole, I like the Bazil Broketail series. This book, however, set on the same world, was not on par with Rowley's other books. The characters are not as well formed, especially the princess, Serena, and the action is slow. Both prince and princess come off as whiners, although they are set up to be the heros. Go with the Broketail series and forget this one.

Wellness Book.......2005-03-21
My doctor recommended this book for me and I found it very helpful. The chapter on nutrition is lacking in my opinion (see Superfoods RX by Pratt.)I like the fact that there are many practical applications that are not "so far out there" that someone who is not into Eastern healing can still gain much from it.
Healthful Living.......2002-04-03
The Wellness Book has been extremely helpful to me and is one of the best investments I have made in myself. I first used this book 10 years ago and was able to establish some healthful living goals and actions for myself that improved my physical conditioning immensely. I continue to use it today. What I really like about this book is that it enables each reader to really focus in on their individual lifestyles, needs, and habits and develop specific, realistic, and individualized action plans for improved and healthful living. The improved physical condition that I realized as a result of focusing on a plan and actions enabled me to climb mountains in the Sierra Nevada. I have also used techniques in this book to successfully address anxiety. This week I pulled the book off of my shelf and am going at it again. I am having fun with this exercise because I can compare my "10 loves" from 10 years ago to my "10 loves" of today and put a plan in place to realize them. Many thanks to the authors for such insightful and all emcompassing work. This book is as useful and current today as it was the day it was written.

Most Comprehensive Wellness Book.......2000-12-10
The Wellness Book has been the standard in Stress Management and Mind/Body Medicine for both the general lay public and health care practitioners for a decade, and continues to be head and shoulders above other such publications! . . . Gary L. Flegal, Ph.D., Professional Stress Management Services.
Five Stars!.......1998-11-06
This book is by far the best guide to mind/body techniques to healing and recovery of the body and spirit. Dr. Benson's Mind/Body Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconness Hospital in Boston is widely respected and uses all the techniques made available here. Indispensible.
Book Description
After nearly two decades of practicing his art, Charlie Trotter has established himself as one of the true visionaries of modern American cuisine. In the past two years alone, Trotter has received the Outstanding Chef and Outstanding Restaurant awards from the James Beard Foundation, and his Chicago restaurant was named best in the world by the Wine Spectator. His first cookbook, published in 1994, broke new ground with its stunning food photography, exquisitely wrought recipes, and deluxe format. With nine books and an award-winning PBS cooking show to his credit, Trotter hasn't looked back. CHARLIE TROTTER'S MEAT & GAME finds the chef in top form and, like the wines from his restaurant's renowned cellar, perfectly paired with the feast at hand. Exotic meats like pheasant, duck, wild boar, and venison take their place alongside ever-versatile lamb, pork, and chicken; and such robust fare proves to be the ultimate platform for Trotter's synthesis of French technique, Asian minimalism, and improvisational verve. Start off with a classic refiguredFrench Onion Soup with Shredded Pork, Goat Cheese Brie, and Sourdough Croutonsand then segue to a study in color, texture, and aroma with the Smoked Squab with Israeli Couscous-Stuffed Tinker Bell Peppers and Chocolate Vinaigrette. Introduce pleasant hits of spice with a Cumin-Corriander-Scented Lamb Tenderloin, tempered by the cool, tangy finish of a Cucumber-Yogurt Sauce; and for those for whom one way, even two, is never enough, the Foie Gras Five Ways awaits. Whether you put this book to work in the kitchen or admire it with your feet up, just don't take your eyes off Trotteryou may miss where American cuisine will be tomorrow.

Charlie Trotter's eponymous Chicago restaurant is one of America's finest. Awarded Outstanding Chef by the James Beard Foundation in 1999, Trotter has also published a number of cookbooks celebrating his unique cuisine. Charlie Trotter's Meat & Game, a welcome addition to his professional cooking series, follows the approach of the previous books: glamorously oversized and beautifully illustrated with color photos, it presents recipes--100 plus, in this case--that showcase Trotter's remarkable cooking. Most readers will want the book for armchair fantasizing rather than cooking from; the recipes almost uniformly require hard-to-find or costly ingredients (sometimes both) and painstaking preparations. But Meat & Game presents Trotter at his most imaginative; anyone interested in refined and magnificently conceived American cooking will treasure the book.
In chapters devoted to game in all its manifestations--from antelope, boar, and grouse, to hare, partridge, and quail (and including also lamb, pig, rabbit, and duck, among others)--Trotter offers his glorious specialties. These include Sweet-and-Sour Braised Lettuce Soup with Foie Gras and Radishes; Steamed Pheasant Breast with Hen of the Woods Mushrooms, Black Trumpet Mushrooms, and Alba White Truffles; and Roasted Scottish Hare Loin with Green Garlic, Braised Tiny White Leeks, and Caper-Cornichon Egg White Vinaigrette. Trotter offers suggestions for substitutions (Venison with Mole and Cashew Vinaigrette can be made with beef, chicken, pork, or, interestingly, lobster) which, improved practicality aside, offer an expended sense of dish-creation Trotter-style. With wine notes, a section on "basic" preparations such as Shellfish Oil and Dried Pickle Chips, and a glossary, the book revels in a great chef's food dreams, which all can, in imagination at least, share. --Arthur Boehm

Amazing.......2004-07-09
If you live in Chicago and love to cook... this is an amazing book. A lot of the ingredients may seem hard to find but it seems that Treasure Island has all of the items.....
Even if you don't follow the exact recipes you will be inspired....
Give this to your hunter.......2003-10-25
He/she won't be able to pull off the recipes by him/herself, but you can put them onto some small task .... say, making a plum sauce to dribble over the final product ... to keep them out of your hair while you do the heavy work. In fact, think of these recipes as team projects ... that's probably the only way to get everything to the table at serving temperatures. Your hunter will beam with pleasure. You will be a god/dess in his/her eyes.
Don't try this at home!.......2002-10-16
Have you ever traveled cross-country to Chicago just to dine at Charlie Trotter's? I have, and it was one of the best meals of my life. This book and the others in the series are great at giving you a feel of what the real thing is like. The pictures are outstanding and the combinations just wow you. But if you think for a moment that any cookbook would allow you to duplicate what Charlie does, you are mistaken. Some cookbooks are for those who want to follow a recipe and duplicate it. This is not one of those. This is for people who want to understand the Chef's unique cuisine and appreciate it for the art that it is.
Meat & Game Extravaganza!.......2002-08-17
More of Trotter's high output of creative, skilled dishes with exotic ingredients, sauces and minimalist-Asian accent. Continues the 10-Speed Press tradition of well done cookbooks, with superior photos, text and in Trotter's case, two photographers scenic photos lining the pages.
These recipes are certainly difficult if not impossible for the average home chef, or even the sophisticated amateur gourmet as well. The ingredients are exotic and difficult to obtain (no source help is provided at all) and the techniques and difficulty of steps for each entree are staggering.
Not to despair however, for the interested gourmet. As Trotter himself suggests: "think of the recipes as interpretations found to be particularly pleasing. Look at these pages for inspiration and fresh ideas, then make the dishes your own, either by substitutions we have offered or through the endless possibilities evoked by the foodstuffs themselves." Further, nearly all recipes include suggested substitutes, e.g. for the Asian=Glazed Wild Boar Chop he suggests pork, lamb or chicken.
Especially attractive to this reviewer is the enormous collection of game: from grouse to partidge to quail to antelope, buffalo, venison, et al. Excitement from such as: "Roasted Chestnut Soup with Foie Gras, Cipolline Onions and Ginger," "Grilled Pheasant Breast with Wild Strawberries, Pistachios, and Apricot-Curry Sauce," Smoked Squab Breast with Israeli Couscous-Stuffed Tinker Bell Peppeers,Ennis Hazelnuts, and Savory Chocolate Vinagerette," "Asian Glazed Wild Boar Chop with Kimchi, Burgundy Carrots, and Their Puree."
True to his inspiration of fusion, he combines Western European technique without sauce, and in their place consistently and creatively replaces with Vinaigrette or Emulsion.
Suggest interested also check out Mark Miller's "Red Sage," Trotter's "CT Cooks at Home," and "How To Cook Meat" by Schlesinger.
all amazing books but this one at top.......2001-12-11
