5 out of 5 stars A "must" read........1999-11-01

There are certain artefacts that draw one in life - there are certain records/albums/cd's one might feel - without which a collection is incomplete. As with books, a dictionary, Shakespeare, Roget's Thesaurus and Trevanian's books are on my shelf. I only wish RW and I could have met. If perchance you read this -or know the author- tell him Thank You.[Have an Islay Malt on me!] A wonderful book. I also highly recommend Summer of Katya and the other 3 known books by Trevanian.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book that changed my whole life!!!.......1999-10-11

My life has been devided into two parts: before and after reading the 'Shibumi'. It gave me the concept of 'overwhelming calmness' to which the development of any person must be directed. However, the 'overwhelming calmness' is not the the aim in itself, but one of the most important stages on the way of the endless development-the only worthy thing in the world.

A First-Rate Thriller from a Legendary Master

Jonathan Hemlock, the art professor and mercenary who first excited readers with his daring exploits in The Eiger Sanction, returns in an even more masterful adventure in The Loo Sanction, Trevanian’s second thrilling spy novel. Hemlock has gone to England to rest, but his vacation is interrupted when the head of British Intelligence needs his highly skilled services. Jonathan must take over the mission of an agent whose murder was so bizarre and terrifying that no other agent was willing to replace him.

His task: to locate a set of secretly made films that incriminate a number of high-ranking British officials. His target: a top underworld figure who delights in debauchery and torture. Facing this threat, Jonathan is drawn into a labyrinthine network of intrigue and depravity. As all the pieces in the dangerous puzzle begin to come together, Jonathan is trapped, almost fatally drugged, and forced to attempt one of the most daring escapes ever conceived. The Loo Sanction is sure to keep readers frantically turning pages until the thrilling climax.

St. Martin's-in-the-Fields

His pain was vast. But at least it was finite. Sharp-edged waves of agony climaxed in intensity until his body convulsed and his mind was awash. Then, just before madness, the crests broke and swirled over his limen of consciousness, and he escaped into oblivion.

But always he emerged again from the delirium, cold and perspiring, weaker than before, and more frightened.

A crisp wind fluted through the arches of the belfry in which he was prisoner and drove his tears horizontally back to his temples. During troughs of awareness between crises of pain, his mind cleared, and he was bewildered by his reactions to impending death. Matthew Parnell-Greene ("Uranus" in the planet-code of the counterespionage agency that employed him) had always known that violent death was a very real alternative to retirement in his line of work. He was not physically brave—his imagination was too active for that—so he had sought to mute his fear by callusing that imagination. He had forced himself to rehearse being shot, being knifed, taking a faceful of cyanide gas from a tube concealed in a folded newspaper, being poisoned—his urbane flair always insisting upon the poison being in exotic foods consumed at really good restaurants. And he had attempted to toughen his tender imagination by abrading it with anticipations of the more disgusting alternatives. He had been drowned in a bathtub; he had been suffocated, his face blue and his eyes bulging within a polyethylene bag; air had been injected into his heart. Always he had died well, with a certain dignity, not struggling dumbly against impossible odds. He had imagined pain, but the end had always come quickly. He had long ago realized that he could not withstand torture and had decided he would cooperate fully with his questioners, should it come to that.

Fear, pain, anger, even self-pity had been anticipated so often that they held no more dread than he could stand. But his anxious fantasies had not prepared him for the emotion that now overwhelmed his mind: disgust. Disgust was bitter in the back of his throat. Disgust curled the corners of his mouth and dilated his nostrils. When they found him, he would be unsightly, revolting. The thought of it embarrassed him intensely.

In the two hours since a watery dawn had made London visible below him, Parnell-Greene's eyes had dimmed many times, with each fresh crisis of pain that carried him over the brink of unconsciousness as some membrane inside him ripped through, sending waves of shock through his body.

How long had he been there? Six hours? Half his life? His existence seemed divided into two parts, one containing forty-seven active, colorful years; the other, six hours of pain. And it was the second half that really mattered.

He remembered them bringing him to St. Martin's. Although he had been heavily drugged, it was all perfectly lucid. The drugs had been pleasant, euphoric; they had sapped his will, but he remembered everything. Two of them had brought him. They had stood on either side of him because he was unsteady on his feet. He had sat for a time with one of them—The Mute—in a back pew, while the other went up to the belfry to see that the apparatus was in place. He remembered the oaken contribution box with its notice:

Contributions to keep this church always open and to maintain its services

They had led him up the winding metal staircase and out onto the dark windy platform of the belfry. And then they had . . . and then they . . . Parnell-Greene wept at the sadness of it.

He sobbed, and that was a mistake. The convulsion ruptured something inside, pain clawed through his body and throbbed in his head. He fainted.

The streets below the church streamed with people. Hundreds gushed up Villiers Street and poured from Charing Cross Station, all hurrying toward work or standing w

5 out of 5 stars All Trevanian books rock!.......2007-09-05

I really enjoyed reading this book. The previous book "The Eiger sanction" was also really good. Good suspense, well written, and amazing charachters. The dialogue and tactics each of the charachters use in these books are what sold me on them. You will definately enjoy reading these books.

2 out of 5 stars A Big Let Down.......2006-01-03

I started this novel with high hopes....expecting something better than some self proclaimed thrillers I had recently inflicted myself with, but it was not to be.The plot is simplistic and the protagonist blunders from one accident to another. He only manages to succeed in the end due to an unbeliveable set of good luck and stupidity on part of the villians.

While reading the novel there was a strong sense of deja vu .... of having been there and done that, especially with respect to the character of Dr Hemlock. There is very little that is original or likable about him.

In my opinion Ian Fleming wrote infinitely better novels of this genre, viz. spy thrillers, I have yet to come across any author with a better command over language and creator of more interesting characters than him.

My search continues......

5 out of 5 stars just great!!.......2004-09-02

ANYONE WHO ENJOYS A SPY NOVEL WILL LIKE THIS. ANYONE WHO LIKES CHARACTER STUDY AND FINE STORYLINES WITH GOOD PACING, WILL LIKE THIS. IT SEEMS THAT MR. TREVANIAN MAY HAVE KNOWN A SPY OR TWO IN HIS (OR FOR THAT MATTER, HER) LIFE. THE CHARACTER OF HEMLOCK IS INDEED INTERESTING. MR. TREVANIAN TOUCHES A PART OF YOU THAT INVOLVES AN INWARD EYE OF SORTS. THIS EYE TAKES YOU INSIDE OF THE PERSON INVOLVED IN THE STORY IN A STRANGE WAY, HE SEEMS TO PUT YOU RIGHT THERE AS IF HE HIMSELF WERE THERE BEFORE. THE VISION THAT TREVANIAN HAS IS ALMOST LIKE A MEMORY OF SOMETHING THAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED IN REAL LIFE. I CAN'T REALLY PUT MY FINGER ON IT, BUT THIS CHARACTER COULD CERTAINLY BE IN TODAYS HEADLINES ALONG WITH ANYTHING ROBERT LUDNUM OR LEN DEIGHTON MAY HAVE CREATED. SPY FANS, PLEASE READ "THE EIGER SANCTION" FIRST AND THEN READ THIS FOLLOW UP. I ASSURE YOU, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPOINTED. TREVANIAN IS TRULY GREAT!

4 out of 5 stars Terrific Spy Thriler By A Master Of The Genre!.......2003-07-23

In the mid 1970s three back-to-back best sellers were provided by the reclusive and somewhat mysterious author who wrote under the pen name of Trevanian. The three novels were first, "The Eiger Sanction", followed quickly by a sequel, "The Loo Sanction", and finally, by a complete change of pace with "Shibumi". Of the three, While The Eiger Sanction was easily the most commercially successful, the Loo Sanction provided more of a showcase for Trevanian's considerable intellect, panache for taking pot-shots at the British culture, and sheer gift for words. Like its predecessor, this is a taut and thrilling tale of a once famous mountaineer and retired government assassin turned college art history professor named Jonathan Hemlock, who is forced back into the "sanction" business both by personal greed and crude manipulation, this time around by the British through blackmail, setting in motion another terrific spy thriller.

The book opens with a graphic description of a pederast being slowly impaled on a stake through the inexorable force of gravity by way of his bodyweight. An aggravating and dangerous entrepreneur named Maximillian Strange is using his own filmed trysts catching British government officials to blackmail them, and the British Intelligence was an outsider like Hemlock who cannot be traced to sanction (assassinate) him. To do so, Hemlock must infiltrate Strange's private estate/bordello called The Cloisters, and it is considered an almost impregnable fortress/resort. Of course, Professor Hemlock gets diverted along the way by the well-turned limbs of a lovely lady, and gets consequently involved in the trendy world of the London art world, where his expertise as an appraiser of original art is both highly regarded and which also allows him some humorous diversions along the way.

Once we finally make it to the Cloisters, the action is literally non-stop, quite accurate technically, and absolutely riveting to read about. While this is both amusing and fanciful stuff, owing more to Bond-like super-hero stuff than real life, it is escapist work of the first magnitude. The author holds our rapt attention with a plot that unfolds in a quite plausible and inevitably tragic fashion with no one necessarily spared as the frenzy reaches its natural conclusion. This is a terrific spy thriller, on e written by someone who has a wonderful command of prose and entertainment, and who employs them both to great advantage here. This is great entertainment, and something I can heartily recommend as a great summer read. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely funny. Masterful prose........2002-07-24

I noticed that one reviewer called this book a light read. I suppose this is true, in the sense that the book, when taken in its entirety, makes no sweeping statement about society; will not revolutionize the world of literature; and simply is not to be taken too seriously.

It is upon closer inspection that the connoisseur of literature notices the brilliance of Trevanian's writing; evinced by the surprising number of sentences the reader wants to reread to simply admire the gift of the author: the choice of words; the economy of words; the evocative descriptions; and the ability to phrase, with exquisite precision, thoughts that are both abstract and sometimes profound.

Neverthelss, the Loo Sanction, as a whole, is largely a farce, lampooning with special force and flair, the status of the modern art world. In the midst of the potpouri of untalented, self-described art experts, Jonathan Hemlock is one of the few truly knowledgable art scholars, occasionally sharing his expertise with reluctant disdain; while the others in the field acknowledge his preeminence with reluctant, and jealous admiration. One character attempts to hire Hemlock to appraise a half million dollar sculpture at a value of [$$$] million, knowing that Hemlock's expressed opinion will instantly increase the market value of the sculpture.

The rest of the plot consists of avid British-bashing, and an absurd, yet intricate attempt by an arch criminal to blackmail high-ranking members of the British establishment. Despite the largely farcical nature of the story, the author was able to make this reader, at least, acutely sad about the ultimate demise of Hemlock's female companion. THough this book may be hard to find, it is highly recommended to anyone who has found themselves among the true appreciators of Trevanian's craft.

      3 out of 5 stars interesting.......2000-08-02

Many of the stories were very good and certainly different takes on the traditional Arthurian legend. There were a couple that I really liked, like "The Dog's Story" (I think that's what it was called..something about a Dog) but most of them were, although well-written, a little too far-out for me.

5 out of 5 stars Every story better than the last........1998-08-01

This is one of those books that you wish you could read again for the first time; each story is so tightly wound and entertaining that every sense of the world around me fell away. One story in particular, by Esther M. Friesner called "The Three Queens" has stayed with me - partly because of the flow and imagery of her words, but also because she brings an entirely unique possibility into play in the Arthur/Mordred relationship that was extremely thought provoking. Then Friesner turns around and writes a very amusing tale about the very long wait for KA to wake up - (The Lady of the Lake is hilarious!) Most of the Arthurian short story anthologies which have come out recently are very good, but this book is one of my favorites. If you decide you like this one, try "An Invitation to Camelot", edited by Parke Godwin - one of my other favorites!

A Practical A-to-Z Reference To Natural And Conventional Treatments For Infants & Children. Written by a medical doctor, a naturopath, and a registered nurse, Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child is a complete A-to-Z guide to the most common childhood disorders and their treatments, using BOTH alternative care and conventional medicine. Highly Recommended!

Health-care practitioners are a polarized lot: generally speaking, either they subscribe wholeheartedly to conventional medical treatments, or they eschew them altogether. This can be a great source of frustration to parents, whose natural response to a child's illness is a desire to do everything possible to make that child well. Written by a natural-medicine practitioner, a traditionally licensed doctor, and a pediatric nurse, Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child presents an integrated approach to children's health care that allows a parent to do just that. This excellent reference applies a full spectrum of responses to common childhood health problems: conventional medical treatments, dietary guidelines, nutritional supplements, herbal treatments, homeopathy, and acupressure; for each ailment, general recommendations and preventive measures are also offered. The book's authors explain that their approach to health care "considers all treatment possibilities and draws on what works. Sometimes this will be an herb, sometimes an antibiotic, sometimes both." This well-researched, balanced, and clearly written reference belongs on every parent's bookshelf. --Jane Steinberg

It tells of conventional treatment and natural treatment for various medical issues that come up in your children. I love the natural remedies because I don't want to over medicate my children. This book abundantly illustrates the naturopathic central article of faith, that the body is run by a 'purposeful life spirit.' Per: "homeopathic remedies stimulate the body's vital force, enhancing its ability to heal itself. The `vital force' described by Hahnemann cannot be precisely identified. Even today's most technologically advanced medical detectives do not really understand the ways in which body and mind work together. A complex interrelationship between immune factors and regenerative biological systems, the essential life force locked within body and mind remains a mystery [p.033...] the correct constitutional remedy will help strengthen and stimulate the vital life force [p.035...] in Chinese philosophy, the energy that pulses through all things, animate and inanimate, is called chi [...] chi flows through all things [...] creating harmony and disharmony [...] Chinese medicine works directly with the natural, vital energy - or chi - of the body. The goal of acupuncture and acupressure is to normalize the body's energies. Chi can be tapped at specific points along channels known as meridians [...] by tonifying (increasing energy in) a specific area, the yin-yang balance is treated. Moving an excess of chi from one area and directing it to another, weaker area, corrects the yin-yang balance [p.044]." Vitalistic medicine / sectarian medicine's 'purposeful life spirit' is as real as the Tooth Fairy. -DBI.

This book has saved me trips to the DR. and has helped me find ways to comfort my child. I have never been an "alternative" medicine parent but this book has made me believe in herbal remedies as opposed to conventional medicine for many things.

Easily referenced in alphabetical order with symptoms, conventional treatments, herbal and homeopathic remedies. Every parent needs to own a copy of this book!

5 out of 5 stars MVP- Most Valuable Publication for Parents.....Available!!!.......2006-10-15

This book was the most important parenting book on my book shelf. It comforted me on late nights when my child (newborn-teens)might be up coughing, itching, or vomiting, etc. It gave me recommendations that I could do to help ease symptoms that my child was experiencing. While it is in no way a substitute for individual medical advise, it is an intelligent and practical guide. I often shared it with my pediatricians who were/are highly respected in their profession(and who were grateful for the varied information). It integrates Western and holistic medicine as well as provides wellness suggestions. I recommend it to EVERY parent that I know and I often give it as a shower gift or baby gift.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration for Excellent Fish Cuisine.......2005-09-22

      B. Marold has done this book huge favor by summarizing that this will not satisfy those who want a "basic" book on fish prep, but this will serve as excellent second source to take fish cooking up a notch as Emerald is fond of saying.

Yet these recipes are not all that difficult, likely what one might call "intermediate" in terms of technical difficulty and ingredient sourcing. Those are aided as well by clear glossary and definitions and source listing.

For some who have large cookbook collections with many seafood volumes, this will be great addition with its creative, essential approach.

What this reviewer enjoys is the wine suggestion as well as side-dish ideas, and when possible even fish substitutions.

5 out of 5 stars Great 2nd book on Fish cookery. Buy It!.......2005-06-13

`go FISH' by Laurent Tourondel and Andrew Friedman is one of those books which exudes promise from its pores, as it were. It has the very promising subtitle, `Fresh Ideas for American Seafood', the talented co-author who has assisted several other major New York chefs with their books, and complementary back cover blurbs from six of the heaviest of heavy culinary hitters. I will be only a little skeptical about the fact that all but Thomas Keller are French chefs with restaurants in New York. This `coincidence' is offset by the fact that one of the French five is Eric Ripert, who is a first rate fish specialist in his own right. So, if Eric is willing to pass some of his cachet off to our man Laurent, then I will take him at his word.

The book explains itself as a collection of recipes for only fish found in American markets (not necessarily in American waters) and as a collection of recipes written to be prepared at home rather than at a restaurant. That is, although Monsieur Tourondel is a seafood restaurant chef, these are dishes he prepares at home and not in his restaurants. So far, all of this sounds really great.

Tourondel continues to please me when he says that fish is really easy to cook. This coincides with everything I have read and experienced about fish cookery so far. In fact, the main talent you need with fish is to avoid overdoing it with strong flavors so as to avoid loosing the identity of the fish under a blanket of strong flavors.

Tourondel pays up on this promise by offering many dishes of raw (sushi, sashimi, tartare, carpaccio) acid-cooked (ceviche) recipes which are practically all about good knife skills and involve virtually no cooking by heat.

The authors offer us a great service by providing a chapter of fifty-eight (58) profiles of fish in American markets, almost all of which are also from American waters. Understandably, many will only be available in certain parts of the country. In eastern Pennsylvania, I have never seen stone crab, frog's legs, spiny lobster, rock shrimp, sea urchin, snails, Dungeness crab, or peekytoe crab at my fishmonger or megamart. The only seafood I miss from their list is abalone and terrapin, which are both in `James Beard's New Fish Cookery'. I will certainly not hold that against this book, as I would rather have two good books that do not overlap than two good books which succeed in the same areas.

Another introductory section gives expert advice on how to select and care for seafood purchases. This advice covers everything I have heard or read before, but with not much I have not heard or read before.

Thus, the authors seem to have succeeded with three important big ideas, all of which add up to a promising book for American home cooks. The next issue is whether their recipes are good and they have a good supply of little ideas to back up their agenda.

For starters, I believe their recipes are written in an especially good format. My usual preference is for numbered steps that make it easy to see where you are at any given point in the preparation. The authors go one better and give titles to each step. This is an excellent measure for making the recipe easy to follow, but it is also an excellent step to show, upon reading the recipes, how much work is involved in actual cooking and how much is involved in prepping the ingredients and the garnishes. In almost all other regards, the layout of the recipe text is first class. The headnotes are at the beginning, the notes about ingredients are highlighted with large type names, and almost all recipes are for the same number of servings.

An excellent last step to each procedure is instructions on how to serve the dish. Each recipe, even the appetizers, also include a wine selection which goes far beyond the usual. In fact, it goes so far that while the novice can use it, its full value may only be evident to a wine aficionado. These last two features make this book doubly valuable as a resource for dishes with which to entertain.

I am very happy to find the names of all the recipes at the beginning of each chapter. One can see at a glance, for example, that the book includes recipes for the traditional Manhattan and New England clam chowders, Pesto Minestrone, Mediterranean Fish Soup, crab bisque, and cream of cauliflower with salt cod. The editors should have taken just one more step and put the page numbers on the recipe titles.

With fish described as being so simple to cook, one may be surprised at the long ingredient lists and not trivial cooking instructions. The fact is that except for soups and plating instructions for things such as salads, much of the time and materials in many of the recipes goes for the dressing, sauce, or garnish. I looked at a few of the scallop recipes and found that the cooking in most of them was the same. The differences lay in the saucing and dressing. In spite of the somewhat long ingredient lists, I found nothing really expensive or out of the ordinary, as long as you are reasonably knowledgeable about world cuisines. Recipes originate from around the world, with a heavy concentration from France, Italy, America, the Mediterranean, Japan, and Southeast Asia (formerly French Indo-China). Many recipes even used water in lieu of chicken or fish stock.

Scallops bring up an important point. These recipes were probably written and tested with the very highest quality of scallops in hand. In landlocked Pennsylvania, all the sea scallops I ever see look more like scallop pieces laden with that stuff they add to keep them looking white.

An excellent second fish book, after acquiring Beard's book or Mark Bittman's `Fish'.
