Book Description

Too big to miss-that's Odelia Grey. A never-married, middle-aged, plus-sized woman who makes no excuses for her weight, she's not super woman - just a mere mortal standing on the precipice of menopause, trying to cruise in an ill-fitting bra. She struggles with her relationships, her crazy family, and her crazier boss. And then there's her knack for being in close proximity to dead people . . . .

When her close friend Sophie London commits suicide in front of an online web-cam by putting a gun in her mouth and pulling the trigger, Odelia's life is changed forever. Sophie, a plus-sized activist and inspiration to imperfect women, is the last person anyone would ever have expected to end her own life. Suspecting foul play, Odelia is determined to get to the bottom of her friend's death. Odelia's search for the truth takes her from southern California strip malls to the world of live web-cam porn to the ritzy enclave of Corona del Mar.

This humorous, snappy mystery is the first in a series featuring unforgettable amateur sleuth Odelia Grey.

This is my 3rd copy of this story - I read the very first issue; then read the updated version - and both copies are missing. I let people borrow them to read, and because it's such a fantastic writing, I never got the copies back. SOOOO, this copy is MINE and will never leave my possession as long as I'm taking a breath! Sue Ann Jaffarian is a most outstanding author - I will be her #1 fan forever!

Odelia Grey loves her life for the most part. She enjoys working for Wendell Wallace as his paralegal. But he will be retiring soon and she dreads whom she might work for next. Her best friends Zee and Sophie keep her energized. They are all part of the Reality Check Club that meet to encourage each other in their size as well as meet for walks once a week. It all seems to be going well until Odelia shows up at Zee's house to find out that Sophia is dead. The police say that it is suicide, but suicide just does not feel right to Odelia. She does not mean to meddle but she must know the truth. She has her theories as to who killed her friend but can she prove it before she loses her own life?

Odelia Gray is a woman who can be admired. She has her own downfalls with food just like everyone else. She does her best to accept how she looks which is not easy when she decides to window shop at stores and is told that they don't have anything in her size. It can be down right discouraging. The support from her friends that gets her through the awful stereotypes that she faces every single day.

Zee, also known as Zenobia, Washington is happily married to her hubby Seth. They have two beautiful children who do act like siblings quite often. She keeps Odelia's spirits up after horrible dates. Zee knows there is more men liker her husband so she does her best to encourage her often.

I really liked Odelia and Zee. I never really got to know much about Sophie but she seemed like a really neat lady. All the minor plus size characters felt real as well because they held each other up. Having such a great support group really was beneficial to all. I really enjoyed watching Odelia figure out what really happened and who was behind the whole escapade. This book definitely rates a 4 out of 5. It was a well-done and well-plotted mystery that had me guessing till all was revealed.

Jaffarian has written an excellent mystery story - I'd give it six stars if I could - but she's done even more than that. She has woven other issues into the story and leaves her readers with something to think about. Other reviewers have adequately covered how Jaffarian examines the issue of discrimination but there is more here to ponder. We also see a revealing picture of families and their various dysfunctions. Mothers' roles are particularly highlighted - Sophie's mother abandoned her; Her stepmother is a nightmare; Glo's mother was a victim. Most interesting though are the three mothers who have every reason to be enemies, but work together to protect a single child.

Mystery readers know the characters Stephanie Plum, Bubbles Yablonsky; they are all slim, perky crime fighters. Are you ready for a new character, a cross-between Bertha Cool and Bridget O'Toole? Author Sue Ann Jaffarian has taken all those characters and rolled them up into one plus size crime fighter.
Odelia Grey is middle aged, never married plus size woman living in Costa Mesa, a place "where size does matter."
This novel is fun, well-writen and at times touching. Jaffarian knows how to write a good, character and plot driven mystery . When her friend Sophie commits suicide on her web site, Odelia is thrust into a bizarre world she never knew existed. This book held my interest though out. I will be looking foreward to the next Odelia Grey novel.

5 out of 5 stars A killer plot that keeps winding round and round.......2006-05-06

Odelia Grey is Sue Ann Jaffarian's alter-ego, and if Sue Ann is anything like Odelia and I'm guessing she is, Jaffarian is a warm-hearted, wonderful, intelligent, and decidedly entertaining person. Sue Ann is a plus-size paralegal by trade, and the current president of the Los Angeles chapter of Sisters In Crime, an international organization dedicated to the mystery genre. Sue Ann is also a motivational speaker, having founded Fat Chance Promotions, which is a writer's marking, promotional, and coaching organization.

Odelia Grey is indeed a paralegal...and is a plus sized beauty with brains, a heart, and that certain charisma that attracts people to her like flies. When her mentor, Sophie London, dies in an apparent online suicide, Odelia learns of Sophie's secret life, including a son, an ex-husband, and a slimy boyfriend. Sophie isn't satisfied with the explanation for Sophie's death and puts her paralegal skills to work as an amateur private investigator. Along the way she meets what promises to be the love of her life, and her sheer tenacity and loving respect for her friend turn her into a formidable sleuth:

"Olsen had said that Hollowell had used Sophie, physically and emotionally, since they were in high school. Greg had referred to him as Sophie's addiction. I had lots of questions for John Hollowell. So many, I entertained the idea of jotting them down on the palm of my hand like crib notes. From what I'd seen and heard of him so far, a bad taste had already formed. But I knew that I'd learn nothing if I came across like a Rottweiler having a bad day. And, after all, it might not have been as Olsen and Greg had said."

Sue Ann Jaffarian does a bang-up job of portraying Odelia's world (skillful paralegal who is adept at dealing with obnoxious lawyers); loyal friend (refusing to accept the mystery of Sophie's death at face value); and romantic lover (meeting an exceptional guy and accepting him with his flaws). TOO BIG TO MISS is touching; hilarious; has a killer plot that keeps winding round and round; and of course has characters who feel real and struggle through their personal challenges.

Sue Ann Jaffarian earns her position as President of Sisters In Crime on the merit of this story alone. This reviewer can't wait to dig into more Odelia Grey mysteries. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant writing and art!.......2002-05-17

The is a must have for any fan of Doom. Roger Stern's writing is simply brilliant, and Mignola's artwork is magnificant. The good Doctor is portrayed as ruthless and cunning, but with a shockingly noble goal. Dr. Strange plays second fiddle to Doom, yet his involvement is instrumental to the plot. The story is this: Doom competes in the contest of the Vishanti to receive a boon from the Sorceror Supreme. His wish? Only to free his mother's soul from the clutches of Mephisto, a fight that involves a journey to his realm which could cost them both their lives.

I can't say enough about this story. It is one of the best pieces of comic literature I have ever encountered and I have read it countless times. Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

WITHOUT TAKING ANTHING AWAY FROM THE ORIGINAL ORIGINS, TRIUMPH AND TORMENT ADDS TO BOTH DOCTORS' PAST HISTORY, WHILST WEAVING AN INTRICATE STORY THAT INVOLVES BOTH MEN'S PASTS AND POWERS. IF YOU ARE A DOCTOR DOOM FAN, YOU MUST HAVE THIS BOOK! ITS DRAWN BETTER THAN THE "VILLANY" TPB, AND HAS BETTER WRITING.

Very cool story, Doom and Strange journey to HELL and square off against Mephisto. The coolest parts though are the re-tellings of both origins...nothing is changed, but a LOT is added to both tales....nice detail throughout. And the art....WOW. This is a nice looking book, and one of the best characterizations of Victor VonDoom.

    3 out of 5 stars 2b = two bees.......2007-01-20

I picked up this book in a garage sale a few months ago. Just so you dont get any ideas, I'm not a forgetful bloke. However it is impossible for anyone to remember it all and the thought of learning new tricks to keep my brain young was something I just could not pass on. Turns out that this book is a really comprehensive guide on all things related to our brain and memory, more than what I was interested in knowing. It may prove to be really useful for people who need to refer to information of this sort for research. For me though, I quickly browsed chapter 3 & 6, the two chapters that the text quickly points has memory training skills. In both these chapters, there are exercises that involve active observation, taking mental snapshots and other organization exercises. I was too lazy to do them all however I did have some fun with mom on the memory assessments. Some of these exercises I have found to be really useful in everyday life, I now use them to remember where I park my car in the mall (hence the title) and such, so they are definitely worth going through. Another good chapter was chapter 5, 'Get fit with mental aerobics.' This chapter is filled with puzzles and brain teasers to workout the brain through creative thinking. Basically exercises to show us how ignorant and absent minded we really are. Nevertheless I couldn't resist attempting all of the exercises in this chapter. Since i did not read the entire book, I don't feel its appropriate that I rate it.

4 out of 5 stars a bit arduous, but definitely worth looking into.......2007-01-18

We bought this book for my 79-year-old mother, who's in good health, very active, has no particular health concerns - but who occasionally talks about having "senior moments". I skimmed through most of it (and did some of the exercises), and she's taking it very seriously. We both find the book a bit boring, actually, but are keen to assimilate the principles involved. The first goals she set were to memorize things like her social security and license plate numbers (which, of course, all the rest of us already know by heart, no?). I find the strategy the author suggests for remembering numbers perfectly idiotic because it's much too complicated, but my mother thinks the word:number correspondence idea quite appealing. Maybe because she only has 7 digits to memorize, whereas all my phone numbers have at least 10 digits, not including the country code...

4 out of 5 stars The Memory Bible review.......2006-08-18

This book was recommended by a DR when I mentioned a concern for my memory problems. I have found the book very informative and helpful if a little hard to get into--- and that may be due to things other than the book!

4 out of 5 stars Use It Or Lose It.......2004-12-23

I have always been an exercise nut -- believing that keeping physically fit was the key to a long, healthy life. Now this book has shown me that keeping fit MENTALLY is the key to a long, healthy brain life. By giving up my coffee habit I realized having that wired up feeling all day clouded my concentration. Did you know one cup of joe raises your blood pressure by 14%! Fortunately for me I was able to find a wonderful tasting replacement made from soybeans. You brew like coffee and it even helps lower my cholesterol. I found it online at www.S o y c o f f e e.c o m. Gaining this understanding will affect every move you make from this point on and will bring with it the necessity to share it. Dr. Small's research breakthroughs are phenomenal and I highly reccommend this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-08-02

As a medieval historian and living history enthusiast, this book was everything I'd hoped it would be. Not only are there authentic recipes, but actual recipes reprinted from the original sources. It's great to read a 14th century Italian recipe for soup in the chef's origianl recipe. It also contains general info about types of dishes and other things like that for the non-historians out there. It's a lot of fun, and is organized just as any modern cookbook is, which is one of the best things about it.

Not only is The Medieval Cookbook a beautifully illustrated resource on the eating habits of Medieval folk, but the recipes are easy to follow with scrumptious results.I could hardly put this book down. [...] Very useful for hands-on projects when teaching children about medieval history. Wholeheartedly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good History and Illustrations. Weaker on Recipes........2004-11-21

`The Medieval Cookbook' by Maggie Black is very similar to the slightly older book, `Pleyn Delit' by Constance B. Hieatt, Brenda Hosington, and Sharon Butler. It even cites this book and other works by these authors as references. Aside from the fact that the two books deal with almost exactly the same subject, English and French recipes from the late Middle Ages, and both are serious, scholarly works, there are two important differences.

The positive differences in Ms. Black's book is that it is organized by source and that it has many more pictures, both black and white and color photographs of scenes from medieval sources, and line drawings or etchings of food plants and other botanicals. `Pleyn Delit' has virtually no pictures.

The two books share several major sources. Dominating the sources and background of both books is Geoffrey Chaucer's `Canterbury Tales'. While this work contains no recipes itself, if has numerous references to food and beverages, and Ms. Black devotes an entire chapter to recipes cited in this great literary work. The second major work cited in Ms. Black's volume is a pedagogical volume by an upper middle class member of the gentry identified as `The Goodman of Paris'. The narrative identifies him as probably a civil servant, with houses in both the city and the country. After chapters on proper moral deportment, the author gives both menus and recipes for the training of his staff of servants. The book also gives several directions to wife and staff on proper kitchen economics and the care of domestic and captured animals. The third primary source is documents associated with the very sybaritic court of the English king Richard II, whose death started the War of the Roses. I am green with envy at my image of the author's working on this book among the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library and at the British Museum, two shrines of English language scholarship for sure. I have seen both as a tourist and my most persistent fantasy career is one of a scholar.

The pictures in the book are very well chosen to illustrate the literary sources. Pictures of medieval life are taken largely from tapestries such as the famous Bayeux tapestry and similar sources. They are very well selected and, unlike so many other incidental pictures in books on cookery, they are actually given meaningful captions.

Ms. Black and the authors of `Pleyn Delit' take almost exactly the same approach to translating their recipes from old English and identifying the sources of the original text. The recipe translations are equally fine in both books while the scholarly method of citing sources is equally dismal. I simply do not understand these authors use of a plainly obscure method for connecting source in the bibliography to the text in the main part of the book. I am certain these Brits and Canadians use the same scholarly conventions as we Yanks as codified in things like the `Chicago Manual of Style'. This little quibble is for the scholars among us.

The most serious lapse in Ms. Black's book compared to `Pleyn Delit' is in the fact that the latter book has a much more interesting collection of recipes that a modern amateur cook would really find interesting. The very first recipe in `The Medieval Cookbook' is for Frumenty, a simple porridge of cracked wheat, water, stock, and salt with an optional addition of eggs and saffron. The second is Girdle `Breads' which is an unleavened, saffron coloured biscuit of flower, lard, and salt with no leavening. The third recipe is for grilled steaks brushed with either verjuice (an ur-vinegar made from specially grown grapes) or juice from Seville oranges. The fourth recipe is for rabbit. While these four recipes, taking up seven pages of the book are all very interesting from an historical point of view, it makes the book less valuable as a source for modern cooks who may want a good source for a medieval theme menu. To be sure, there are recipes in this book that are worth making today, but `Pleyn Delit' is a better source for actual cooking.

I am very happy to see that the two books agree almost exactly on the use of ingredients and techniques. If you have an interest in history in general and culinary scholarship in particular, get both books. If you are only interested in a source for recipes, get `Pleyn Delit'. It is authentic and a richer source of interesting recipes.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful library addition or gift for medievalists.......2003-07-05

This is the perfect gift book for those interested in the Middle Ages. It is beautifully presented, and organisation of recipes with references to historical incidents or literary works is clever and winning. The recipes are easy enough to prepare, and I assumed the variations from the originals were intended to make obtaining ingredients simple.

There were several reasons I withheld a 'five star' rating. First, though the author makes reference to how a particular dish would have been prepared in several different ways, only one variation is offered, in some cases markedly unlike the original. Secondly, and to a greater degree, there are not many recipes included. Those provided are illustrations of a category, not collections of, for example, varied main dishes, desserts, or savouries.

      4 out of 5 stars Good Reasource.......2002-03-26

If you are looking for good tasting period recipes, this book is for you. Sometimes cookbooks that have recipes that are from times past offer recipes that taste quite differently than what our modern expectations are. This book will deliver you good recipes. Two of the favorite ones I have tried from this book were the Almond Chicken and the Golden Leeks and Onions. The instructions are very clear, and easy to read. The book does offer lovely art work as well. My only complaint about this book while the recipe that it has are very good, I just with their were more of them. This is a good book to start or even add to a Medieval recipe collection.

      Book Description

This new Iraqi cookbook contains more than four hundred recipes covering all food categories. There is ample choice for both vegetarian and meat lovers, and many that will satisfy a sweet tooth. All recipes have been tested and are easy to follow.

Introducing the recipes are thoroughly researched historical and cultural narratives that trace the development of the Iraqi cuisine from the times of the Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians, through the medieval era, and leading to its interaction with Mediterranean and world cuisine.

Of particular interest are the book's numerous folkloric stories, anecdotes, songs, cultural explications of customs, and excerpts from narratives written by foreign visitors to the region. Arabic calligraphy, and photos, paintings and sketches add to the pictorial appeal of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Just what i was looking for!!!.......2006-08-05

Thanks to Nawal for writting this excellent cookbook which includes almost all the iraqi recipes in such nice order.

As a kurd I found many recipes that brought back memories from my childhood, even the terms/words used!

I looked through the whole book briefly, the recipes look easy and well written, not many pictures but I doubt they are needed. Can't wait to try more recipes.

I know I will treasure this book for life..

          Book Description

Written nearly a thousand years ago, al-Warraq's cookbook is the most comprehensive work of its kind. This traditional cookbook with more than 600 recipes from the luxurious cuisine of medieval Islam is also a rare guide to the contemporary culinary culture. Its numerous anecdotes and poems unfold the role of food in the politics of Islam's golden era.

Introducing this elegant translation is a thorough survey of the period and its food culture. An extensive Glossary, in Arabic and English, of medieval ingredients and dishes, and an Appendix of historical figures provide the necessary reference tools for this work. Making this key resource available in English for the first time to scholars and the general reader fills a gap in the cultural history of medieval Islam. 35 color illustrations.

            Book Description

So begins the irresistible invitation of this exquisite volume—a call from one of the world’s most beloved poets to join him in exploring love, both human and divine, with all its ecstasy, suffering, and beauty. Rumi—the Persian mystic who lived and wrote in 13th-century Turkey—has become America’s most widely read poet, and these verses draw on two of the richest symbols in his Sufi tradition: the rose and the rose garden. The rose evokes both a high spiritual state and a visionary ecstasy, while the garden embraces all the world’s glories. Renowned scholar Andrew Harvey and award-winning photographer Lekha Singh have cultivated a fine balance of word and image to bring Rumi’s lines to life, pairing sumptuous color images with original translations of his transcendent writings.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and comprehensible.......2002-08-28

This is a great collection of well documented and authentic period recipies. I've tried about half of the dishes in this book, and I have only had one I wouldn't do again. The recipies are laid out so that one sees the original, in the original language, a modern english translation, and then an ingredients list and directions. I'm not a great cook, but I have had a lot of luck with pieces from this book.

There are other aspects that will appeal to medieval recreators, as well. Especially useful are the charts showing which foods are and are not period, and ideas of what to take to a potluck besides bread.

All in all, I found this to be my favorite medieval cookbook - and I have a number of them.

            4 out of 5 stars A lovely book.......2002-08-28

This book is a great start for medieval cooking made easy. The recipes are easy to use and well formatted, and it's very friendly. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Brings ancient recipies into the modern kitchen.......2002-08-28

This book is a great resource for anyone who is interested in what Medieval people ate (it wasn't all giant roasts!) or for anyone who wants to try a cuisine that hasn't shown up in all the trendy restaurants yet.

The book is written particularly for people who do various sorts of medieval and renaissance re-enactment, but its easy format makes it useful even if you've never seen someone in armor and don't plan to. Main dishes, sauces, vegetables and other categories are all laid out, and, unlike many "medieval" cookbook interpretations, the original text is given as well as a modern version so that the cook can make his or her own interpretation if they don't like the one given.
