Book Description
A cocktail party ends in murder, but who did it? Why? And for that matter, how? No real cause of death has been established. It's a real baffler and it's prompting Hercule Poirot to ask another question...who's next?
Download Description
The novel opens as a theatre programme, with this telling credit: 'Illumination by HERCULE POIROT.' Light must be shed, indeed, on the fateful dinner party staged by the famous actor Sir Charles Cartwright for thirteen guests. It will be a particularly unlucky evening for the mild-mannered Reverend Stephen Babbington, whose martini glass, sent for chemical analysis after he chokes on its contents and dies, reveals no trace of poison. Just as there is no apparent motive for his murder. The first scene in a succession of carefully staged killings, but who is the director?

Not enough Poirot!.......2007-09-30
I was happy to get this book from the library yesterday and was looking forward to another Hercule Poirot mystery.
Alas, he's seldom in the action, which I find disappointing, although I did like the book. Surprising ending which caught me off guard. I loved the last sentence. It would have been terrible if he'd gotten the poisoned drink!
A thouroughly enjoyable audiobook.......2007-02-04
I really enjoyed listening to this book being read by Andrew Sachs. He did a wonderful job distinguishing between the different characters with slight alterations of his voice. Oftentimes, you never know what you're going to get when you listen to an audiobook--will the narrator simply read the book with little to no expression, or will s/he take it to the next level and read as one would "hear" it in ones' head? Sachs does the latter to a wonderful degree of simplicity and subtlety.
As for the actal plot, I enjoyed it quite throughly. The characters were enjoyable, though the supporting characters simply disappear. It is the three main chacacters--Mr. Sutterthwaite (excuse me if I spell his name wrong as I've only heard it pronounced), "Egg" Liton Gore, and Sir Charles--that drive along the action, instigating the investigation into the mysterious murders. M. Poirot appears sporadically until about 2/3 of the way through the book where he comes in as a stronger force. What I found engaging was that Christie was able to get me interested in the mystery, despite the fact that I had picked up this particular audiobook due to the presence of Poirot within the novel. (Definately a marketing tool for Christie. It also seemed as if she wanted to further Poirot's character without completely connecting him to any particular story, as evidenced by his few final comments at the end.) As another reviewer noted, I guessed the murderer early on in the story--however, it was a passing notion of my to think that this particular character might have done it. It was the motive that remained semi-elusive, as well as how the murderer pulled it all off. That is what always makes Christie fascinating as an author--her ability to construct a case that seems impossible, yet, at the same time, can become so clear when one sees the facts. In the end, I found it to be a very good listen and would definately recommend it to anyone interested in a lighthearted, fun, and interesting mystery. And since Poirot isn't a huge player, it can probably be accessible to people who are not familiar with the Belgian detective and don't want to have to rely heavily on previous knowledge of the character.
Nice.......2006-07-10
Not an absolutely top, but nice plot, nice mystery, nice suprises. Recommended for the collector.
Nice.......2005-01-02
A nice little Hercule Poirot mystery - actually, it's only barely a Poirot mystery, as he is absent from most of the book, making only a guest appearence at the beginning, and in the last section, he comes to wrap things up. The plot itself is rather simple, and you could stand a decent chance of guessing the end correctly, if not for a complication Christie throws in which makes things difficult (for the reader as well as for Poirot himself). All in all, a pleasent read. Not her best book, to be sure, but pleasent nonetheless.
..........2004-07-20
I probably would have rated this book higher, except I had guessed the murderer after 50 pages. Probably most people who've read a large collection of her books will have guessed the end before the end.
Other than that, I enjoyed the flow of the book, which read more like a novel than a mystery. I liked Egg and Mr Satterthwaite, though Sir Charles was a bore.

Is it right to kill Satan's hit man? Would it help God's work? This installment in the Left Behind series picks up with Rayford Steele--"believer" and international fugitive--as he struggles with a plan to assassinate Antichrist Nicolae Carpathia. Meanwhile, Carpathia has been busy rebuilding roads, airports, and a cellular/solar satellite phone system--all designed to help him become supreme ruler of the world--and even claim himself to be God. We also find ace reporter Buck Williams anonymously preaching to the masses of believers and converts through his cyberspace magazine The Truth. All the believers in the safe house, including Buck, Doc, Chloe, and Tsion, are suspicious of Hattie--former mistress of Carpathia--who claims to be a believer but may have already compromised their secret location when she tried to buy her way to Europe months before.
Fans of the series won't be disappointed. Jenkins's signature writing is at full force. Readers can count on a suspenseful plot, imaginative futuristic thinking, and familiar characters, all of which appear in the opening pages and are sustained until the last cliffhanger scene when God unleashes another earth-shattering disaster.

Will I finish this series before the rapture?.......2007-10-11
Ok, I took on the task of reading this series, because the first book was really good. But after that it gets more repetitive, and less believable. I contemplated skipping the rest of the books and buying the last one to see what happens, im sure i wouldn't miss much and would be caught up by the first 200 or so pages. Maybe I can just read the last of each book? I don't know, but I'm trying hard not to give up..The authors really should be ashamed of themselves for dragging this out.
2,5 stars. Better than the rest so far. .......2007-09-27
With the exception of the first book, I've given the Left Behind sequels 1 star, mostly because of the extremely slow pace, where it feels like they took a few chapters and stretched them out to make a whole novel. The other problem is that they are preachy.
Well, "Assassnis" was certainly a step in the right direction. The was some action in the book, not (as in "Apollyon") only 200 pages into the book. "Assassins" was also not as preachy as for example "Soul Harvest".
So it's definitely an improvement. There are still problems though. There's still too much filler material and the book could have been about 50 pages shorter (but that's an imporvement from the other books, which should have been about 250 pages shorter). And the story is moving to slowly. I can't understand why they need to stretch it out into so many volumes.
2.5/5
I should know better.......2007-01-23
I should know better than to write another review for the left behind series. I've taken a real killing in the votes. But, I can help it. I'm enjoying the series. I'm neither a huge critic or supporter of the series. I stayed away from the series for years but now I enjoy it. I don't agree with all of the theology but I am in general agreement.
This book like all the others have been fun fast reads. It isn't great fiction but it is a fun read. If you are looking for indeapth character this series will also bother you. It took several book for me to really empathize with the characters and now that they are going into the second half of the tribulation I still find that the character development is a bit stiff and unconvincing.
There was also poor dialog at several points in this particular book with entire conversations seeming very awkward. One stylistic issue that continues to bother me is long discussion where the dialog goes unattributed. This isn't always a problem but there are times during longer and more complicated conversations when the reader loses tract of who said what.
But, over all this book like the ones before it is a fun read and I recomemnd it for light reading.
Assassins: Assignment: Jerusalem, Target: Antichrist Left Behind #6.......2007-01-04
This is another great book by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. I would recommend you keep reading if you haven't read it already, and if you have add it to your collection.
Sadism Unleashed.......2006-12-13
Just as I finished the painful task I've given myself of reading this "popular" fictionalization of the End of Time, I saw an article in the news about a video game version of Left Behind, aimed at the market of teenage boys and young men, indoctrinating them in violence and giving them the false notion that their God would condone their taking judgement into their own hands. Do any of the readers of these books recall Jesus's denunciation of the self-righteous Sadducees in the Temple?

Customer Reviews:
adequate, but not inspirational.......2006-08-20
The journal is adequate, though not great. It is simple to use, but leaves out some food groups likeprotien and dairy. It also assumes that everyone drinks alcoholic beverages.
Great Journal w/ or w/ out the Program.......2004-10-20
I bought this when I was reading Get With the Program but it is actually a great journal.
The front and back cover w/ Bob Greene's face can be removed w/ out hurting the journal. You then have a nice spiral bound journal that says "Daily Journal" on the front in blue lettering on white with a white cardboard back that is hard enough to let you write well in the journal.
The book has a good two page daily lay out where you can record you cardio, weights and eating habits w/ or w/out the program. There is also enough space to write your daily thoughts and/or listing of foods if you are keeping a food diary.
It is a great size and just a nice item if you are tracking your health!

If you live in a rural community, away from major bookstores, and happen to mail order these deceitful publications, you will be disappointed as hell. Many of these paranoid fitness gurus prey on unwary consumers who seek help to better their life. In this empty notebook, Bob Greene does not shy from sticking his photo on the front cover in order to impress you with his beautiful green eyes, for the price of $14.95.

Great concept, great franchise.......2004-05-16
Bob, I love your programs and your energy. I think just about everything you do is awesome! This book however isn't much more than a lab journal. It has us write down food/exercise like we are a science experiement. It is a lot like a lined paper notebook.
I got a lot more out of LifeChanger. Your exercise program, coupled with this self discovery tool enabled me to lose 185 pounds! I recommend every buys ALL of Bob Greene's other books, but pass on this one and get yourself LifeChanger instead! I found mine on eDiets.com's store.
Bob Greene is the BEST!.......2003-04-26
From Make the Connection to Get with the Program to Get with the Program's Guide to Healthy Eating to this Daily Journal, Bob Greene is down to earth, easy to understand, and is highly motivating and encouraging. I would recommend his books to anyone desiring to take better control of their health and fitness, and do it with a common sense approach. I see why Oprah likes him so much.
Customer Reviews:
The Book Lives Up to Its Title.......2006-07-06
This book does describe how Chinese food is made in many of America's restaurants. Unfortunately, making food this way AT HOME could be an ordeal unless one wishes to cook Chinese food day after day.
Nonetheless, there are many bits of information that can be easily applied at home to make our attempts MORE like what we find in Chinese restaurants. Many of the recipes included are not the typical dishes found in Chinese buffet restaurants (at least in my region of the country), but some are, including twice-cooked pork and chicken with bamboo shoots and mushrooms. I would suggest using this book as a methodology and basics primer. You can then take other recipes, use the methodology, and add the ingredients almost always present in the recipes of this book (rice wine and the unique oriental soup stock, for example). Or, in other instances, you can almost guess the ingredients based on the patterns here!
Helpful insight but lacking otherwise.......2004-10-12
I've been looking for a cookbook on american chinese restaurant cooking. I had thought this was the one. It's not. HOWEVER, if you tweak the recipes a bit you can get good results.
Their chow mein is made with pan fried noodles, which would make it a lo mein. Their sweet and sour is immensely more sour than sweet. My brother who can handle just about anything didn't like it. And there were only about ten recipes out of at least seventy that were truly something as a main entree in an american chinese restaurant, but they weren't exact.
The good side of this book; it teaches the basic format of how to cook chinese correctly, so you can go through any recipe you find else where and change it to fit. There's a seasoned oil, a basic stock, an egg/flour batter for deep frying and how to marinate meat correctly. These make a big difference in the flavor of what you get.
It's worth it to learn how to cook correctly. But don't trust the ingredients if you're use to the chinese restaurant that serves bright red sweet and sour and chow mein that has more vegetables than meat.
Get it now!.......2003-08-05
This is an essential book - don't let the unknown author and the low price fool you.
This book is the only book I've found to have the proper marinades. That is a good part of the battle of Chinese cooking.
The book also contains the correct cutting instructions.
If you are just starting out, or an advanced Chinese cook, you need this book on your shelf. The recipes are reliable and consistent. The technique that this teaches you is just as indispensible as La Methode!
My only regret is that the publisher cheaped out on illustrations - a few good colour plates would be a welcome addition.
Turn your kitchen into a Chinese restaurant!.......2002-01-08
At last, here are recipes for some of our favorite dishes from every-day, non-gourmet Chinese restaurants! Among these are Lemon Chicken, Chicken Chow Mein, Sweet & Sour Pork, Kung-Pao Chicken, Twice-cooked Pork, and Hot & Sour Soup. You won't find every dish on your favorite restaurant's menu, but there are several good mainstays. On the down side, there are also some recipes for items I've never seen in a Chinese restaurant, like squid and lamb dishes. Also, in a few recipes, the measurements are difficult to translate, like "1/3 pint of chicken stock (200 ml)"...how much is that in cups? But most recipes are fairly simple and easy to follow. Overall the book is very thorough, covering specialty Chinese ingredients, cooking equipment & methods, and even authentic Chinese serving and drinking customs. I bought the book hoping to be able to re-create my favorite Chinese take-out dishes at home, and there are enough recipes for these that I am satisfied.
